Read Online“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:37–39We are very familiar with this passage above. It is Jesus' answer to the Pharisees who came to test Jesus. Prior to this, a group of Sadducees tried to trap Jesus and failed. So now it was the Pharisees who gave it their best shot to trap our Lord. Of course, Jesus' answer was perfect. And upon the conclusion of this answer, Jesus returned the favor by asking the Pharisees some questions that they could not answer, and they dared not ask Him any further questions at that time.Sometimes, being challenged by another in matters of faith helps us, in that it allows us to clarify what we actually believe. Though Jesus did not need clarity for His own sake, He did offer this clarity in the face of trickery so as to help both the Pharisees as well as His followers who were listening attentively.Have you ever been challenged by another about matters of faith? If so, what was your response? Were you able to respond by the inspiration and clarity given by the Holy Spirit? Or did you walk away confused and unable to respond? Having our faith challenged by another will either result in our own confusion or in our deeper understanding.By answering this question in the way that Jesus did, He presented the entire Law given by Moses in the Ten Commandments in a new and summarized way. The first three of the Ten Commandments have to do with love of God, and the last seven have to do with love of neighbor. The second commandment Jesus gives, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” is a consequence of the first commandment. How do you “love yourself?” You do so by fulfilling the first commandment Jesus gave: “love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” When God is loved above all, then loving your neighbor simply means that you love God Who dwells within your neighbor in accord with the way God loves them.It is also helpful to note that it is possible to “love” our neighbor in such a way that is contrary to the love of God. For example, if our love of neighbor is expressed in such a way that is contrary to the Love of God, then this is not true love. Let's say that your neighbor has chosen a gravely immoral lifestyle. How do you love them with the love of God? You don't say to them “I support you in your immoral living.” Doing so is not love of God; it's a selfish form of love that cares more about how the person will respond back to you than caring for their eternal soul. The right form of love for one who has gone astray in an objectively immoral way is to let them know you love them but do not support the choices they are making. And though they may respond negatively to this, caring for their eternal salvation must supersede every desire to simply get along with them.Love of neighbor, at times, especially when the “neighbor” is a family member who has turned from God, can be challenging. But when it is, think about the way that the Sadducees and Pharisees tried to constantly trap Jesus. He always gave the perfect response of love and never allowed their misguided conversation to leave confusion. So with us, we must rely upon the wisdom and love of God when loving another is difficult. God must guide our every conversation in that case so that the other knows they are loved and so that our love does not deviate from the pure love of God. Reflect, today, upon the high calling you have been given to love God above all and to love your neighbor with that same love that you have for God. If you find loving someone is difficult, pray for the wisdom you need to remain faithful to them in God's love alone. And if you find your love challenged, rely upon our Lord to lead you and to give you the words you need when you need them the most. My loving Lord, You love all people with a perfect love, and You call us all to love You with our whole heart, soul and mind. And You call us to love others with the love You have for them. Fill my heart with love of You and all people, especially those who are most difficult to love. Give me wisdom, dear Lord, to know how to love others in You so that they will experience Your perfect love in their lives. In our rambling little chat, we somehow manage to stumble across a buffet of nonsense, from pretending we understand drum covers to overanalyzing church potluck menus. We get into a heated (and completely pointless) debate about lasagna versus baked spaghetti—because clearly, the fate of civilization hangs on that. We brag about our “southern cooking skills,” which mostly just means frying things badly, and laugh at the goofy ways we describe our aches and pains like we’re auditioning for a medical dictionary no one asked for. Naturally, we drift into tales of botched craft projects involving super glue, confess our ignorance of proper restaurant etiquette, and take a nostalgic victory lap for outdated gadgets we barely knew how to use in the first place (Blackberry, anyone?). In a burst of misguided ambition, we even brainstorm fake ads that no sane sponsor would actually want. Somewhere in the chaos, we convince ourselves we’re exploring profound topics like the quirks of technology, the weirdness of aging, and the absurdity of marketing. But let’s be honest—it’s just us swapping stories, roasting ourselves, and making our listeners wonder why they’re still tuning in.

In this episode of the Parsha Review Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe delves into Parshas Devarim, the opening portion of the Book of Deuteronomy, which serves as a review (Mishneh Torah) of the Torah's teachings, encapsulating Moses' final remarks to the Jewish people. Rabbi Wolbe focuses on the first verse (Deuteronomy 1:1), which lists seemingly extraneous locations—such as the wilderness, Arava, and Dizahav—where Moses spoke to the Israelites. Quoting Rashi, he explains that these are veiled critiques of the Jewish people's past sins, including the complaints after Egypt, the Midianite women, the spies, the manna, Korach's rebellion, and the Golden Calf. Moses delivers these critiques gently to avoid direct confrontation, reflecting the Torah's sensitivity to prevent embarrassment.Rabbi Wolbe ties this to the upcoming month of Elul, a time for introspection and gentle self-critique, and shares his grandfather's advice to young husbands to avoid critiquing their wives for three years to preserve their relationship. He references a Talmudic teaching from Yevamot 65b, which mandates offering constructive criticism only when it will be accepted, and withholding it otherwise, emphasizing that effective critique requires knowing the recipient well and prioritizing their growth over personal catharsis. Rabbi Wolbe recounts a story about Rabbi Yaakov Galinsky visiting Rabbi Hetskel Levenstein during shiva, where Levenstein lamented that no one offered him introspective critique about his wife's passing, unlike the sages who lovingly prompted Rav Huna to reflect on his loss of 400 barrels of wine (Tractate Berachot 5b). This underscores the value of constructive feedback from trusted friends. Rabbi Wolbe encourages embracing criticism as a path to self-improvement, as taught in Ethics of the Fathers (6:6), and warns against arrogance that rejects critique. He concludes by urging listeners to use gentle, loving critique to foster personal growth and prepare for Rosh Hashanah, wishing all a meaningful Shabbos._____________This episode (Ep 7.40) of the Parsha Review Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe on Parshas Bamidbar is dedicated in honor of our Holy Soldiers in the Battlefield and our Torah Scholars in the Study Halls who are fighting for the safety of our nation!Download & Print the Parsha Review Notes:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ncaRyoH5iJmGGoMZs9y82Hz2ofViVouv?usp=sharingRecorded at TORCH Studios (C) to an online TORCHzoom.com audience on August 15, 2025, in Passaic, New Jersey.Released as Podcast on August 17, 2025_____________Subscribe: Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/parsha-review-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1651930083)Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/22lv1kXJob5ZNLaAl6CHTQ) to stay inspired! Share your questions at awolbe@torchweb.org or visit torchweb.org for more Torah content.  _____________About the Host:Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe, Director of TORCH in Houston, brings decades of Torah scholarship to guide listeners in applying Jewish wisdom to daily life.  To directly send your questions, comments, and feedback: awolbe@torchweb.org_____________Support Our Mission:Help us share Jewish wisdom globally by sponsoring an episode at torchweb.org. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 8th study session on Gregg Olsen's If You Loving You Is Wrong, which investigates the criminal, Tragic Arrangement between White Puget Sound schoolteacher Mary Kay Letourneau and her 12-year-old non-white student, Vili Fualaau. When speaking with the late Neely Fuller Jr. many years ago about why it's incorrect for White people to engage in sexual activity with non-white people, he cited the Letourneau case. The founder of counter-racism science knew all the tacky details of this case and how it corroborates his counter-racist code, which prohibits sexual activity between White and non-white people. Last week, we learned how the local Seattle news media further exploited Vili Fualaau and abused a child. Karen O'Leary, a blond White Woman like Mary Kay, got her film crew down to White Center to get an exclusive interview with young Vili. No one got permission from his mother and he had no legal representation. We learn about the random "groupies" who came to support Mary Kay - and insist she did nothing wrong. Her former students compared Mary Kay to South African freedom fighter and prisoner Nelson Mandela. Many listeners wonder why Vili is consistently referred to as "the (brown) boy." #ChildRape INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: http://cash.app/$TheCOWS Call: 720.716.7300 Code: 564943#

So close your eyes and settle onto your bed. And go ahead and stretch your arms and your legs out as far as they can go, Imagining your spine straightening and aligning, and inviting any physical discomforts to  release. And then release the stretch, bringing your arms and legs back in,  And let yourself settle into your favorite sleeping position. PAUSE… Notice your breath, Observe its rhythm, Its consistent and reliable cadence.  Feel the air as it fills your lungs and breathes life into your body. See if you can imagine all that oxygen traveling throughout your body,  Feeding you, Warming you, Loving you.  And let yourself silently whisper, thank you, as you think about how precious each of these breathes are.   What a miracle it is for you to be here right now. Gospel Luke 1:39-56 Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, and has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.” Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home. Reflection I want to talk about the feast of the assumption. Mary did not die a physical death, but she was fully human. And her destiny was to one day be with God in heaven. A feminine figure standing next to Jesus and God. And between them is flowing the love of the Holy Spirit, and what she does over and over again is breaks into our imaginations, into our world, with message after message that flows from her heart. She cares. She worries about us. She encourages us. She's always there to help. What a gift. What a beautiful way for the one who brought God into the world. That she now stands with him. Closing Prayer Father, bless us with the awareness of the fullness of all that we are taught about who you are and how the world works. To have one of our own. One human being in heaven working for us. Loving us. Teaching us is such a gift. Help us never to lose sight of it. And we ask this in Jesus' name, Amen. Learn more about your ad choices. Loving the world will result in losing our first love. When this happens, we begin to buy into the world's value systems and eventually, our lives do not reflect Christ; they will reflect the world.Main Points:1.  When we meet Christ, one thing that fundamentally changes is what we love. Before we met Jesus, our primary love was ourselves, but we also loved the things of this present world. But when we met Jesus, things began to change. We discovered a better love.2. Loving the world means being devoted to the world's treasures, philosophies, and priorities. God tells His children to set their priorities according to His eternal value system. We are to “seek first” God's kingdom and righteousness.3. The problem with loving the world is that it conflicts with what is to be our first love. Jesus is to be our first love. Why? He alone is worthy of such love and devotion. In Revelation chapter two, we learn the Ephesian church was commended for their hard work and perseverance, yet they were warned because they had lost their first love.Today's Scripture Verses:1 John 2:15 - “Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you.”Romans 12:2 - “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”Quick Links:Donate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group

Miroslav Volf critiques Nietzsche's vision of power, love, and suffering—and offers Jesus's unconditional love as a more excellent way.The idea that competitive and goalless striving to increase one's power is the final Good, does very important work in Nietzsche's philosophy. For Nietzsche, striving is good. Happiness does not rest in feeling that one's power is growing. In the modern world, individuals are, as Nietzsche puts it, ‘crossed everywhere with infinity.' …And therefore condemn to ceaseless striving … The will to power aims at surpassing the level reached at any given time. And that goal can never be reached. You're always equally behind.Striving for superiority so as to enhance power does not just elevate some, the stronger ones. If the difference in power between parties increases, the weak become weaker in socially significant sense, even if their power has objectively increased. Successful striving for superiority inferiorizes.”In this third installment of his Gifford Lectures, Miroslav Volf offers a trenchant critique of Friedrich Nietzsche's moral philosophy—especially his exaltation of the will to power, his affirmation of eternal suffering, and his agonistic conception of love. Nietzsche, Volf argues, fails to cultivate a love that can endure possession, withstand unworthiness, or affirm the sheer existence of the other. Instead, Nietzsche's love quickly dissolves into contempt. Drawing from Christian theology, and particularly Jesus's teaching that God causes the sun to rise on the evil and the good alike, Volf explores a different kind of love—agapic, unconditional, and presuppositionless. He offers a vision of divine love that is not driven by need or achievement but that affirms existence itself, regardless of success, strength, or status. In the face of suffering, Nietzsche's amor fati falters—but Jesus's embrace endures.Episode Highlights"The sun, in fact, has no need to bestow its gift of light and warmth. It gains nothing from imparting its gifts.""Love that is neither motivated by need nor based on worthiness—that is the kind of love Nietzsche thought prevented Jesus from loving humanity and earth.""Nietzsche aspires to transfiguration of all things through value-bestowing life, but he cannot overcome nausea over humans.""God's love for creatures is unconditional. It is agapic love for the states in which they find themselves.""Love can only flicker. It moves from place to place because it can live only between places. If it took an abode, it would die."Show NotesMiroslav Volf's engagement with Nietzsche's workFriedrich Nietzsche's critique of Christianity as life-denying and his vision of the will to powerSchopenhauer's hedonism vs. Nietzsche's anti-hedonism: “What is good? Everything that heightens the feeling of power.”The will to power as Nietzsche's supreme value and “hyper-good”“The will to power is not a philosophy of life—it's a philosophy of vitality.”Nietzsche's agonism: the noble contest for superiority among equally powerful opponents“Every GOAT is a GOAT only for a time.”Amor fati: Nietzsche's love of fate and affirmation of all existenceNietzsche's ideal of desire without satisfaction: “desiring to desire”Dangers of epithumic (need-based, consuming) love“Love cannot abide. Its shelf life is shorter than a two-year-old's toy... If it took an abode, it would die.”Nietzsche's nausea at the weakness and smallness of humanity: “Nausea, nausea... alas, man recurs eternally.”Zarathustra's conditional love: based on worthiness, wisdom, and power“Joy in tearing down has fully supplanted love's delight in what is.”Nietzsche's failure to love the unworthy: “His love fails to encompass the great majority of actually living human beings.”Volf's theological critique of striving, superiority, and contempt“Nietzsche affirms vitality at the expense of concrete human beings.”The biblical God's love: “He makes his sun rise on the evil and the good.”“Even the poorest fisherman rows with golden oars.”Jesus's unconditional love versus Nietzsche's agonistic, conditional loveKierkegaard and Luther on the distinction between person and workHannah Arendt's political anthropology and enduring love in the face of unworthinessVolf's proposal for a theology of loving the present world in its broken form“We can actually long also for what we have.”“Love that cannot take an abode will die.”A vision of divine, presuppositionless love that neither requires need nor merit

Putting differences aside, For Columbia fosters unity among local churches and is a unique opportunity to make a powerful impact with many hands tackling huge tasks to meet the felt needs in our community.  Shay and Shelly also discuss how many of the care ministries at The Crossing have evolved over the years to meet people where they are hurting, whether it's in Divorce Care, Grief Share, One-to-One Care, Single Moms, Cancer Care and more. Many practical ministries now exist to offer simple yet profound ways to show care, proving small acts of service can be multiplied to impact the church family and the community beyond.  Loving your neighbor as yourself may not be an easy task, but when you link arms with others on the same mission, you can change a city one person, and one day, at a time.  Do you want to get involved on a Care Serving Team at The Crossing? click here.  Are you ready to get plugged into a support group within our Care Ministry? click here. We all need to love and be loved, we all want to feel not alone in this world. And this is true for all of the living world, says ecologist and author Carl Safina. Carl has spent his whole life interacting with the wild, from raising pigeons on a Brooklyn rooftop to trekking through the frozen landscape of Antarctica and the vast African savanna. And one thing he's learned is that humans and animals alike, we're all striving to connect. We're all craving to establish bonds, to reach out, and to hold someone close. We all want to be loved – and to love ourselves. Each episode of Meditative Story combines the emotional pull of first-person storytelling with immersive music and gentle mindfulness prompts.
