Shortly after graduating high school, Ed Gale — who stood 3'4” tall — left Michigan with $40 in his pocket and went to Hollywood. Gale said his goal was never to become a leading man, but to make a living as a working actor… and that he did, appearing in more than 200 television shows, commercials, and films. Upon arriving in Hollywood the first role he was offered was none other than Howard the Duck — a role he was originally told he was “too tall for.” Gale continued to work up until his passing in May of 2025.On this episode I'm recommending four films that Gale appeared in. In many of his acting roles (including most of these) Gale appeared wearing masks and costumes, but as Rollo from Under the Rainbow once said, “no dream is too big, and no dreamer too small.”Child's Play 2 (1990)Two years after the original hit theaters, Chucky returned to once again torment Andy Barclay. While the original Child's Play was straight horror, this is the film in which Chucky began to develop the personality we know and love today. Keep an eye out for scenes in which Chucky runs around; that's Ed Gale in costume.Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (1991)Bill and Ted have a problem: despite being told they will eventually become the biggest band in the universe, they still don't know how to play their instruments and their girlfriends are fed up with them. Oh, and evil robots from the future have come back to murder them, so there's that. Featuring a stellar soundtrack and lots of jokes, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey did not perform as well as the original in theaters, but has become a cult classic since. Keep an eye out for Station in the film — that's Ed Gale!Spaceballs (1987)In this Mel Brooks masterpiece, Princess Vespa has been kidnapped by Dark Helmet and his cohorts and must be rescued by Lone Star and his faithful companion, Barf. If it all sounds a bit silly it is. Featuring an all-star cast and more Mel Brooks humor than you can swing a lightsaber at. Keep an eye out for Ed Gale as one of the Dinks, and may the Schwartz be with ya!O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)In this Coen Brothers film, three members of a chain gang escape when one of them tells the other two he's chained to that he knows where more than a million dollars worth of treasure is buried. Loosely based on Homer's Odyssey, this is another film with a star-studded cast and an award winning soundtrack. Ed Gale makes an appearance as “the Little Man” during an election and in this appearance, you can actually see his face! (After seeing it, you may recognize him from Bones, My Name is Earl, and many other roles.)Whether he appeared in a speaking role or in a costume, Gale gave every one of his roles 100% and swore people could see him smiling through the masks he wore. A 30-year working actor and respected acting coach that has played roles in films directed by Mel Brooks, Clint Eastwood, the Coen Brothers, and Woody Allen. Gregg starred in the films Revenge of the Nerds 3 and 4 and served as the spokesman “Dan the Del Taco Guy” for six years with 58 commercials. He portrayed Don Knotts in the NBC movie of week Behind the Scenes of Three's Company. Later, he was cast as Kenny James in the NBC show My Name is Earl. Two years later he was cast as Barney Hughes on Raising Hope on Fox for 71 episodes. Recently, Gregg directed shows for Pure Flix including Hitting the Breaks, Malibu Dan and The Beverlys. His more recent acting credits include guest starring roles on NCIS: Los Angeles, Young Sheldon and NCIS. He's been a familiar face on television for years, on the long-running comedy Wings and the current Chicago Med. He grew up in a show-business family so it shouldn't be surprising that he loves to perform. His range is limitless and his credits attest to that: everything from Mel Brooks' stage musical The Producers to the TV adaptation of Stephen King's The Shining. He and Leonard enjoy exchanging old show-business trivia, and never seem to run out of material. Steven is an articulate connoisseur of comedy…and then some.  

I know what came over you: High Anxiety. You've still got it! Well, it turns out we couldn't quite get ol' Hitch out of our system, and neither could Mel Brooks. The king of satire does his signature send-up of the suspense film master, and it's starring Brooks himself! A first! On s'intéresse au personnage de Frankenstein, ce savant fou qui est apparu sous la plume de Mary Shelley il y a plus de 200 ans, puisque c'était en 1818, dans le roman Frankenstein ou le Prométhée moderne. On sait que bien souvent les personnages de fiction sont inspirés de personnalités bien réelles; et j'avais donc envie de savoir si c'était le cas avec le médecin Victor Frankenstein. Il semble que Mary Shelley se soit inspirée de la vie de Johann Conrad DIPPEL, un théologien, alchimiste et médecin allemand, né dans le château Frankenstein en 1673. Puis le mythique film sorti en 1931 réalisé par James Whale pour Universal Pictures avec Boris Karloff dans le rôle de la créature/ Quelques années sortent les suites La Fiancée de Frankenstein puis Le Fils de Frankenstein. Et enfin plus proche de nous en 1994, Kenneth Branagh a réalisé Frankenstein avec Robert De Niro dans le role du monstre ! Et à noter aussi qu'il y a eu des adaptations plutôt insolites autour de Frankenstein, avec par exemple Frankenstein vs. Baragon (qui mêle le mythe de Frankenstein avec le genre des monstres géants japonais) et qui a été réalisé en 1965 par Ishirō Honda, on a aussi eu droit à Dracula, prisonnier de Frankenstein ou bien encore Les Expériences érotiques de Frankenstein. “I'M NOT AN ANIMAL! I'M A HUMAN BEING!”As you may already know, we lost one of the great ones this year. In honor of David Lynch, we decided to go back to one of the earlier films in his career, The Elephant Man from 1980, starring John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, is considered to be one of the greatest films of all time, a critical and commercial success in what would have been David Lynch's second film and put a lot of eyes on his future, incredibly influential body of work. However, despite Lynch being Austin's favorite director of all time, he has never seen The Elephant Man! Well, on this episode, we fix that.The Elephant Man is not known to be an incredibly surreal film, but we discuss the various similarities and signature iconography Lynch can't help but include in all his films, including The Elephant Man. We talk about the use of dreams, the use of sound, and how his sense of humor shines through in a film that more linear than his other body of work.We also talk about how the film approaches the topic of how society treats an outcast with a deformity/disability. It's not uncommon for the Academy to pay attention to this genre of film, but something about The Elephant Man is very different. What might be contrived and cliche in other films feels deeply moving in this one. How does The Elephant Man stand out and distinguish itself from “Oscar bait“ films?We also talk about the way the film was made and how the film differs from the reality of life for Joseph Merrick, the real life person who lived with this condition that lead people to refer to him as The Elephant Man. How does David Lynch go from making a surrealist art film, Eraserhead, to a narratively linear biopic that tugs on the heart? How does comedy legend Mel Brooks go from making Blazing Saddles to producing The Elephant Man? How did a babysitter get her boyfriend nominated for an Oscar? How did this movie invent an entirely new category the Academy had to pay attention to? We talk about all of this and more!This episode was very special for us and took a little bit of time to brew. With the changes in technology one would think more films would be more accessible to view at our convenience, but in fact that not the case for some films that are culturally significant like The Elephant Man. As of recording the episode we couldn't find the film digitally streaming/renting anywhere, but with luck we did manage to find the film on DVD at a reasonable price. After watching the film we might actually spring for that premium Criterion Collection version, because this film really is that special. Dracula: Dead and Loving It is a 1995 horror comedy film directed by Mel Brooks and starring Leslie Nielsen. It is a spoof of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula and of some of the story's well-known adaptations. Brooks co-authored the screenplay with Steve Haberman and Rudy De Luca. He also appears as Dr. Van Helsing. The film's other stars include Steven Weber, Amy Yasbeck, Peter MacNicol, Harvey Korman, and Anne Bancroft. The music for the film was composed by Hummie Mann. Jim J. Bullock became a notable entertainment figure in the 1980s when he co-starred on the sitcom Too Close for Comfort as Monroe Ficus and was a regular guest on John Davidson's updated version of the game show Hollywood Squares; Bullock occasionally substituted for Davidson as host.He also appeared on Battlestars, Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour ,and Body Language. He later became a semi-regular on ALF (from 1989 to 1990) as Neal Tanner.  Bullock was the voice of Queer Duck in the animated series of cartoons of the same name. In 2000, Bullock was a regular panelist on the revival of I've Got a Secret. He also performed on the national tour of the Broadway production Hairspray as Wilbur Turnblad.  Some of his other noteworthy roles include the pilled-up narcoleptic Prince Valium in the 1987 Mel Brooks movie Spaceballs, and the "not-quite-out-of-the-closet" character in a dating montage at the beginning of 2001's Kissing Jessica Stein. From 2004 to 2007, he had a recurring role as Mr. Monroe, a teacher at the fictional James K. Polk Middle School on the Nickelodeon live-action sitcom Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide. Parody and satire are a certain kind of humour. They're VERY easy to do because you just base them off real, already existing things, then you twist it a bit to add humour and make it ridiculous. But that's where it gets tricky! Satire is a parody of a real situation rather than fictional, it tends to have a harder edge. Where it usually goes wrong is that people mistake it for something straight, i.e. NOT satire, not comedy, not exaggeration or ridicule. The two main approaches to parody are a broad satire of a genre, like Princess Bride on fairytale fantasy, or a more targeted approach like Spaceballs which satirised Star Wars, and things in between like Airplane, which made fun of the film Zero Hour but also used it as a chance to parody the disaster movie genre and include a shotgun approach to pop-cultural jokes, making fun of everything happening in the 1970s. When I was growing up Mad Magazine movie parody comics were always a fave of mine, I'd prefer them to the actual movies they made fun off. The art was amazing with great caricatures and the humour was always very cheeky. Asterix was another comic series I enjoyed, which involved a lot of historical satirical humour. One big issue with that kind of targeted humour though is that it's often very dependent on its references for the jokes to fully work, so if you lack familiarity with them it won't bite as hard or sometimes not at all. The trick is to include enough of the context for context dependant jokes so that they can work regardless. If you do your job well enough people will not even remember the original and your satire or parody will completely stand on its own! In our Quackcast we even covered things that become self parodies like the Deadpool Marvel Movies, some of the Roger More James Bond films, the late horror franchise films like Nightmare on Elm street, Friday the 13th and so on. What are some of your fave parodies or satires? I think Princess Bride, the Life of Brian, Blazing Saddles, and Spaceballs are real standouts. But things like Lego Batman, Not Another Teen Movie, and even The Toxic Avenger have their own place. On that last one: Lloyd Kaufman is like a B-movie parody version of Mel Brooks, Mel does the A-list parodies and satires and Lloyd handles the crazier, gross and kinky low budget ones Mel wouldn't touch LOL! Of course Meet The Spartans is the best parody ever, so much better than The 300.
