This is my topic of 2024 - food. We need it to survive, and we need it to thrive, but food is also the most frequent and widespread choice for abuse, over use and addiction. My sense is that by better understanding and unpacking the human relationship with food in modern times, including ultra-processed food, the more people will feel able to break the chains of enslavement to food addiction, disorders and abuse that is at the crux of obesity, diabetes, neurodegenerative disease and many more diseases. What I loved about this episode with Jillian Acosta was getting vulnerable about my personal food relationships, as well as Jillian's unique twist on the concept of addiction.Jillian Acosta, a registered dietitian, specializes in functional medicine and the psychology of eating. Owner of the nutrition private practice, The Root Cause Method, she guides clients towards health and vitality in unconventional ways. Jillian believes many of the chronic illnesses exacerbated by obesity are deeply rooted in trauma. In her practice, she collaborates with physicians who administer ketamine, using this powerful tool as a means to help her clients transform their relationship with food, feelings and Self. Uprooting what shapes our relationship with food is essential, in her experience, for reversing and preventing chronic illness, and can lead to true embodiment , fulfillment, and connection. Join us as we explore:What Jillian's life and clinical experience has led her to believe is the root cause of obesity and its associated health risks. The original wound at the heart of binge and excess eating, and why Jillian does not associate or work with the idea of addiction. The psychology of unhealthy eating habits.Unpacking Jillian's Root Cause Method with my own food crutches I call Candice, Chelsea and Carly!Mindful vs embodied eating. Why Jillian believes healing cannot be fully accessed without stepping through one key doorway.Contact:Website: https://www.therootcausemethod.comInstagram: @jillianacosta_rdMentions:Book - Mother Hunger: How Adult Daughters Can Understand and Heal from Lost Nurturance, Protection, and Guidance, https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/55783993-mother-hunger Support the Show.Follow Steve's socials: Instagram | LinkedIn | YouTube | Facebook | Twitter | TikTokSupport the show on Patreon:As much as we love doing it, there are costs involved and any contribution will allow us to keep going and keep finding the best guests in the world to share their health expertise with you. Growing up, the clang of weight plates and the steady rhythm of a treadmill weren't just background noise—they were the heartbeat of my home. It's that same familial passion for fitness that fuels today's conversation with Adam, as we uncover the roots of our gym obsessions and the powerful influence of our childhood idols. From the bench press memories with his father to the pulsing energy of a packed gym floor, Adam and I swap tales of transformation, coaching dynamics, and the emotional investment that forges iron-willed athletes and unwavering coaches. This episode is a tapestry of personal triumphs and the relentless pursuit of excellence in the face of adversity. We celebrate the resilience of a former athlete turned bodybuilder, reflecting on the hurdles of health setbacks and weight struggles, and how they sculpted their path to success. Nutrition's pivotal role takes center stage as we join forces with dietitians to map out the road to the competitive spotlight. And in the age of the digital coach, we offer a peek behind the curtain of "See You Later, Leaner," where virtual coaching teams are revolutionizing the way we achieve our leanest selves, whether for the stage or life's milestones. As we wrap up, the raw intensity of competition comes into sharp focus. We share the behind-the-scenes strategies that shape champions in the drug-free bodybuilding realm and the meticulous dance of hormones and health management. The episode also strips back the layers on the emotional rollercoasters faced by clients, particularly women, as they navigate the highs and lows of hormone therapies. It's here, in these stories of managing expectations and fostering deep connections, that we find the true strength of the client-coach relationship—a force that propels us beyond the gym walls and into the very essence of what it means to conquer not just the body, but the spirit. Join us for a powerful exploration of the human element in the relentless pursuit of fitness perfection. --------- EPISODE CHAPTERS --------- (0:00:00) - Fitness Journey With Giovanni and Adam (0:05:13) - From Athlete to Bodybuilder (0:09:35) - Fitness Journey and Nutritional Coaching (0:15:32) - Bikini Competition Coaching and Strategies (0:29:19) - Success in Drug-Free Bodybuilding Competitions (0:40:07) - Optimizing Training and Health Through Cardio (0:47:24) - Managing Dosages and Emotional Rollercoasters (0:54:38) - Client Relationships and Coaching Strategies (0:59:08) - Coaching and Competition in Bodybuilding

Summertime is now fully upon us, and with that, the opportunity to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. Summer is also the perfect time to take a look at our habits related to health, wellness, exercise, and nutrition. Let's face it—it's easy to live a sedentary life as a writer. But what good is it to build a business around our writing, or write lots of books, only to lack energy and cut our lives short because we haven't taken care of ourselves? My guest today is here to help us develop a better mindset around all these issues. His name is Clint Evans, and he is the founder and creator of The Behavior Chef. Clint is a recovering binge-restrict eater and yo-yo dieter. Clint has found success in weight loss and Nutritional Behavior Change for himself (losing according to personal values over 90 pounds) and continues to do so with the unique understanding of Nutritional Coaching and the Psychological Science known as Applied Behavior Analysis. Clint has been in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis for the past 8 years. After becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, he noticed the field pushing into Health, Sports, and Fitness, but not much push was seen specifically for nutrition. In this conversation, we dive into all things nutrition and wellness for writers. Clint gives us a rundown of what applied behavior analysis is and why it's helpful for writers, how to break out of negative health patterns with small steps, and how better eating and sleep can support your writing. In this episode of the Powerful Stories Podcast, Tory sits down with Laura Dundovic. Laura is so many things to so many people, so we start off with a snapshot of her career via her Instagram bio. Laura is a Miss Universe Alumni and has been a Model since she was 16. Laura was bullied at school for being too tall so body confidence has been an issue for her. Even in her debut as an actor on Home and Away, Laura slouched due to her height.  Modelling gave Laura the confidence to stand straight and tall. ‘It's all about accepting who you are and what you have and, be happy with it.' Laura was also the Presenter of her own dating show and studied relationship psychology. So, she is equipped to give us some dating advice - ‘Communication is always the key to any relationship' and, she says, ‘Never use the word ‘always,' it's poisonous.' In all her endeavours, including being a Lyrical Gangsta and Summer Chaser, she says it comes down to positivity. ‘I have always been willing to give it a go' and is ‘obsessed with growth'. While living in the south of France, Laura completed her Cert III & IV in Personal Training and Nutritional Coaching. ‘I have a very holistic approach to health and you need to work on all areas.' She also has a passion for Açaí and she gives us her top 3 recommendations for the best Açaí in Sydney. ‘For me, health is power' says Laura, ‘I train and eat well, not so my body looks amazing, but so that my body feels amazing.' Our mental health and self-care are huge; ‘we need to remove the guilt that comes with looking after ourselves.' We need to ask ourselves - would I rather give half me today, or all of me tomorrow? ‘I've learnt that there is power in resting' says Laura.  Taking the time to be proud of herself, has been the biggest gamechanger for Laura in her career. ‘I didn't congratulate myself for the good moments early on in my career, and I think it's important to take time to be proud of what you have accomplished.' She goes on to say, ‘other people can only love you as much as you love yourself.' ‘So, stop looking for external validation and focus on the internal.' Laura's top three tips for keeping our wellness in alignment with your mind, body and soul - ‘Movement, becoming clear on your values and finally meditation.' She also shares the greatest piece of career advice she ever received; ‘Think of yourself as a life-long learner – always upskills, always diversify and always ask questions' says Laura, ‘You're only going to become a better human the more you know.' So this week we bring back Coach Stout AKA Austin StoutWe hear it all the time "well the research shows this, well the research says that"... but how important is the research really? At the end of the day research for the most part is conducted in controlled environments, but we as humans have many variables that are not controllable. Sometimes research can be too unrealistic to be accomplished, do yourself a favor and listen to the episode you'll see what we mean by that.  Austin brings up a great point within the episode as he mentions "we're dealign with a person not an equation"The second half of the episode the conversation turned to more of a functional training aspect. The term functional can have many different meanings for regular everyday people and part of this functional aspect is really keeping it simple and correcting some of the more easy issues or "low hanging fruit" the industry as a whole sometimes suffers because social media and in many cases coaches set unrealistic expectations.Austin put it in a very simple sentence: "why would you want to do worse, when you can do better?"Time touches on the four pillars of the basics: A. Sleep B. Daily MovementC. Stress ManagementD. Relationship with foodI repeat this is not one that you want to miss DOWNLOAD & LISTEN NOW!Helpful Links-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Austin Stout [https://www.instagram.com/austinst8/]Tim English - @Everycaloriecounts [https://www.instagram.com/everycaloriecounts/]Brandon DaCruz - @brandondacruz_  [https://www.instagram.com/brandondacruz_/]Alex Zaro - @EveryCalorieCounts.Alex [https://www.instagram.com/everycaloriecounts.alex/]Use Code ECC15 at AresNutritionNJ.Com to save!

He was pushed to start a fitness company out of his immense passion for helping others overcome the difficulties associated with health, fitness, and lifestyle change. Aaron's journey is very inspiring and is clear why he is passionate about helping others build a better version of themselves. In 2007, he was involved in a horrific car accident that ended in the death of a completely innocent individual and his incarceration in the Florida Department of Corrections. It was here, in prison, that he says he found a passion and new direction in life. Aaron spent the majority of the nine years that he was incarcerated rebuilding himself by focusing his efforts to learn and put into practice as much as he could about Health, Fitness, and Personal Development. After Aaron was released from prison in 2017, he enrolled in various programs to become a certified personal trainer and nutritionist. His collective education allows him to provide an all encompassing service to his clients that bridges the gap between Personal Training and Nutritional Coaching. He has a thriving business and amazing personal life, his story is truly inspiring. In our discussion, we focus on the importance of accountability, starting from zero, the impact of COVID on society, and much more. Aaron talks about the importance of extreme ownership and why taking accountability is the first step to getting your life together. We go on to discuss the importance of being comfortable with being uncomfortable and fighting through adversity is a vital component of success. Aaron shares a list of books that have helped him on his personal development journey. Our conversation led us to discuss the impact of COVID on society and the current mental-health epidemic. We finish our conversation by discussing how ones attitude impacts your success but more importantly your daily life. Even in her debut as an actor on Home and Away, Laura slouched due to her height.  Modelling gave Laura the confidence to stand straight and tall. ‘It’s all about accepting who you are and what you have and, be happy with it.’ Laura was also the Presenter of her own dating show and studied relationship psychology. So, she is equipped to give us some dating advice - ‘Communication is always the key to any relationship’ and, she says, ‘Never use the word ‘always,’ it’s poisonous.’ In all her endeavours, including being a Lyrical Gangsta and Summer Chaser, she says it comes down to positivity. ‘I have always been willing to give it a go’ and is ‘obsessed with growth’. While living in the south of France, Laura completed her Cert III & IV in Personal Training and Nutritional Coaching. ‘I have a very holistic approach to health and you need to work on all areas.’ She also has a passion for Açaí and she gives us her top 3 recommendations for the best Açaí in Sydney. ‘For me, health is power’ says Laura, ‘I train and eat well, not so my body looks amazing, but so that my body feels amazing.’ Our mental health and self-care are huge; ‘we need to remove the guilt that comes with looking after ourselves.’ We need to ask ourselves - would I rather give half me today, or all of me tomorrow? ‘I’ve learnt that there is power in resting’ says Laura.  Taking the time to be proud of herself, has been the biggest gamechanger for Laura in her career. ‘I didn’t congratulate myself for the good moments early on in my career, and I think it’s important to take time to be proud of what you have accomplished.’ She goes on to say, ‘other people can only love you as much as you love yourself.’ ‘So, stop looking for external validation and focus on the internal.’ Laura’s top three tips for keeping our wellness in alignment with your mind, body and soul - ‘Movement, becoming clear on your values and finally meditation.’ She also shares the greatest piece of career advice she ever received; ‘Think of yourself as a life-long learner – always upskills, always diversify and always ask questions’ says Laura, ‘You’re only going to become a better human the more you know.’ So, sit back and enjoy this powerful story with the extraordinary Laura Dundovic.   Links: Sign up to the Powerful Steps #coffeechallenge to gain Tory’s proven formula for building a global network, with three coffee dates a week.
