Today, we have not one but two of the most sought-after coaches in the world. Lawrence Van Lingen and Erin Carson have risen to legendary status in the world of endurance sports by following their curiosity and not worrying too much about what the mainstream says about mobility and strength for athletes. Guided by intuition and strong intellects, these two coaches are staples in the lives of A-List athletes like Jan Frodeno, Rudy Von Berg, Taylor Knibb, and Paula Findlay. Erin is making her three-peat appearance on the show today, having first come on the show back in 2018 for episode 114 and then just a few months ago for episode 373. After walking into Tug's Tavern Swim, Run, Swim event and finishing 30th out of 400 – a young Kurt Madden thought, ”maybe I can hang with these people”. A few years later he was regularly travelling to Hawaii to compete in Ironman and Ultraman races. In fact, Kurt was the first winner of Ultraman in 1983. He shares some stories of the early days in Hawaii and how it was viewed as a fad.He has podiumed as an age grouper more times than can be counted and has three top 10 finishes at the Ironman World Championships when he raced as a pro. Kurt currently races in the 65 - 69 AG and just returned from the Ironman World Championship in Nice where he finished 12th in his age group. We discuss his racing experience and he shares numerous tips for success in Nice. Endurance News: IRONMAN California By Gary -October 25, 2022 California's capital city, Sacramento, played host to the debut of the Kaiser Permanente IRONMAN California triathlon, part of the VinFast IRONMAN US Series, on Sunday, October 23, 2022. Julien Boulain from Paris, France (M35-39 age group) took the overall victory with the fastest time of the day in 08:45:58. In the women's age group race, Riis Rametta of Park City, Utah (F35-39 age group) claimed victory in the female age-group race, finishing with a time of 9:33:50. “We couldn't have asked for a better day of IRONMAN racing here in the Central Valley,” said Tim Brosious, Regional Director for The IRONMAN Group. “We have been waiting a long time to see Kaiser Permanente IRONMAN California triathlon come to fruition here into the area. The community has come out in true Sacramento fashion to support the athletes and show exactly why this community is already becoming one of the best on the IRONMAN circuit.” IRONMAN California saw more than 2,800 athletes from 62 countries, regions and territories, and all 50 US states start the race. Competitors ranged in age from 18-78 years old. The event led athletes along a downriver 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile flat and fast bike ride through the local area's farm and wine country and a 26.2-mile run throughout the Sacramento Valley for total of 140.6 miles. What's New in the 303: Adams County's “Love Your Trails” Making Bike Paths More Colorful By Bill Plock October 25, 2022– Riding on bike paths these days has become more colorful and interesting thanks to several initiatives over the years to include murals on the trails and overpasses. Recently Adams County finished such an initiative with the final mural being painted by Sofi Ramirez. We ran into her finishing the final piece just east of Sheridan on the Clear Creek Bike Path and had this short conversation with her. She is part of a group of fifteen artists commissioned by Adams County. She uses a cement stain, not paint, to create her art. The stain penetrates the concrete pores better she said and will last longer and not be as slick when it's wet. Says Sofi on her website, “I believe in the ability art has to transform spaces, guide emotions, and start conversations. I deeply value my public art practice, because it provides me with the largest and most inclusive platform for my work. I hope my art can be a catalyst for a deeper understanding and celebration of diversity. While also peering into human nature in a way that opens a window into constructive self-reflection for myself and my viewers.” Adams County has launched two campaigns to bridge the gap between public art, the outdoors, and wellness – while also bringing access to and highlighting the expanding parks, open space, and trail system available to the public. Love Your Trails is a ground mural series dedicated to the natural beauty of the county. Artists who have participated in the program have embraced the challenges of working outdoors and finding new ways to draw in audiences. Murals run 18 miles from the Fishing is Fun Pond in Riverdale Regional Park in Brighton along the South Platte River Trail and the Clear Creek Trail all the way to Sheridan Blvd. “Parks are democratic spaces – they are free to all, reflect the demographic diversity of our county, and are places for social and cultural interaction,” said Adams County Commissioner Lynn Baca, chair. They can sideline you for weeks, sometimes months. With proper recovery protocols, however, you can transition back to full training and racing. There are several considerations when returning to training in order to prevent injury relapse and make your transition back to normal training productive: • Avoid dramatic changes in volume and intensity. • Allow the injury to heal completely. • Stay consistent with training, avoiding long, 2-3+ week breaks. • Engage in an all-body dynamic stretching routine prior to every strength and/or high intensity workout. • Follow a slow warm up of at least 5-10 minutes prior to any swim, bike or run workout. • Engage in yoga or an all-body static stretching and rolling, stick and/or myofascial release routine after every workout. • Engage in an all-body strengthening routine 3+ times a week. • Avoid lifestyle situations that may re-aggravate a recent injury – examples: aggressively participating in sports that your body is not conditioned to support, sitting or standing for prolonged periods, walking or climbing stairs in excess, lifting heavy or awkward objects, etc. • Videotaping - videotaping can help you make form or technique changes once you return to full training and you don't feel any lingering effects of the injury that might alter your form. Videotaping your technique, especially while swimming or running, may uncover form flaws that may have contributed to the injury. This is valuable information for recovery and injury prevention. • Beyond these general return-to-training measures, there are specific elements to consider if an injury occurs in the key phases of training: base, build and competition. Please note: these elements are dependent on how severe the injury was. More severe injuries require longer recovery periods and a more conservative approach. It also assumes that you have medical clearance and/or are finishing physical therapy but will follow at-home therapy recommendations, allowing you to return to training. Base Phase If the injury occurs in the base phase, you stand the best chance of returning to normal training and having minimal effect on your season. Most injuries in this phase are mild to moderate and are caused by training volume, not intensity, so the severity is lessened. Key considerations when returning to training in this phase include: Alter training surfaces and terrain – ease back into training by running on softer surfaces and limit the amount of hill training (run and bike) early in this phase. Gradually reduce but don't eliminate softer surface running and slowly increase the amount of hill training. Rebuild volume modestly – since each situation is unique, there is no specific protocol to follow, but use a 40-20 rule as a conservative guide. Start out with a training volume that is 40% of the volume you were at prior to the injury and add 20% of the new volume every 1-2 weeks. For minor injuries, this may be too conservative, and for more severe injuries, it may be too aggressive, but it can be a good starting point. In addition, since volume is the focus during this phase, reducing intensity may not be necessary. Walk-run protocols – for more severe running-specific injuries, consider a more conservative approach given the impactful nature of running. Start with 2-3 minutes of running and 1-2 minutes of walking and limit the workout to 15-20 minutes. Each week, add 1 minute of running and reduce the walk by 30 seconds. Keep at least 30 seconds of walk for every run segment. Once you reach 10 minutes of running per 30 seconds of walking, you should be able to run the entire workout. Trainer workouts – using a trainer for bike workouts adds stability and may be necessary to avoid the unpredictability of riding outdoors, especially after a severe and/or upper body injury. Strength training – general strength and/or dry land swim training can be a good transition back to training. Note: if strength training was the root cause of the injury, avoid or minimize those exercises that led to the initial injury until completely symptom-free. You may need to follow other recovery elements such as managing volume and intensity. Equipment adjustments – Make the following equipment adjustments as early as possible in this phase to allow your body to adjust to the change(s): Bike fit – Having a well-fit bike has several positive implications related to most joints in the body including wrists, neck, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles. It also affects your lower back, hamstrings, calves and Achilles. The fit may address the injury itself such as moving the cleats on your shoe and/or raising/lowering the seat if you had a knee injury. Use a professional bike fitter for this option. Running orthotics – if orthotics are recommended to you, get these as early as possible. You must adjust to your new running biomechanics before increasing training volume and intensity. Continue to see a PT for follow up and progression checks – I often recommend having periodic appointments with your PT to ensure you are maintaining proper rehabilitation protocols, especially if returning from a chronic injury. A physical therapist helps a patient use a foam roller on his calf. Build Phase If your injury occurs in the build phase and is either mild or moderate, you should be able to return to normal training with minimal effect on your racing season. If the injury is more severe, it may affect early-season races. Some considerations regarding your racing schedule may need to be made. Key considerations when returning to training in this phase include the following: Strength Training – heavier lifting and/or plyometric workouts, which put a lot of strain on your body, are often a part of this phase. Depending on the severity of the injury, you may need to return to lifting by using lighter weights and more reps. Moderately rebuild volume and intensity – many factors affect how aggressively you return to normal training including the severity of the injury, the length of this phase, when races are scheduled, and more. Follow the same 40-20 guide mentioned earlier if a conservative approach makes sense and the injury is more severe. Sometimes, a more aggressive approach may be required, but build volume to at least 75% of normal before adding lower levels of intensity. Equipment adjustments – Make the following equipment adjustments as early as possible in this phase to allow your body to adjust to the change(s): Bike seat position – height and forward/back – only minor adjustments based on the bike fit in the base phase. Consult with your bike fitter prior to making any adjustments. Running shoe wear and tear – due to training volume, running shoes may need to be replaced. A good rule of thumb for shoe replacement: if the shoe has 300-400 miles of use. Reduce the use of swim paddles/buoys – due to the overall volume and/or transition to higher intensity, reduce the use of paddles, even if they are used sparingly. Competition Phase If the injury occurs in the competition phase, you should be able to return to normal training. However, it will likely have a pronounced effect on your racing season depending on several factors, including the severity of the injury and how long of a race season you have scheduled. Key considerations when returning to training in this phase include the following: Re-adjust racing schedule – it may be necessary to find races later in the season that allow you to rebuild fitness in order to meet your desired racing goals. Moderately rebuild volume and intensity – like the build phase, many factors affect how aggressively you return to normal training, including the severity of the injury, the length of this phase, when races are scheduled during this phase, and more. Follow the same principles outlined in the build phase unless a more aggressive approach can be tolerated. Don't get so aggressive that you reinjure yourself – there's often a thin line between getting reinjured and resuming normal training. Day-to-day adjustments may need to be made. This is a very vulnerable stage for reinjury due the sense of urgency races create. Equipment adjustments - equipment adjustments are only advised in extreme circumstances at this point of the season. If they must be made, they should be very minor and following the advice of your bike fitter. A productive return to training is possible when you follow a well-thought-out transition plan that is progressive in nature, not too aggressive, and incorporates the proper elements mentioned above. DON'T GET SO AGGRESSIVE THAT YOU REINJURE YOURSELF – THERE'S OFTEN A THIN LINE BETWEEN GETTING REINJURED AND RESUMING NORMAL TRAINING. One final thought: the most vulnerable time for reinjury is when you feel normal as you return to training. Feeling normal in the early phases of recovery can be misleading since your volume and intensity are typically reduced dramatically. You may be anxious to resume normal training, but your body is often not ready. It's important as an athlete to be aware of your body and be able to read what it's telling you with respect to your transition back to training. Despite attempts to pull away in the first half of the swim, neither were successful in building a definitive lead. Instead, a staggering 19 pros exited the water within 15 seconds of each other, led by Angert in 48:15 and Laidlow in 48:16. This tight pack included some of the most dangerous triathletes in the field, setting up the likes of Kristian Blummenfelt, Gustav Iden, and Braden Currie in perfect position for a tactical race at the front of the field. One minute and 15 seconds later, another large pack emerged from the water, containing even more strong cyclists capable of quickly bridging the gap. These included Igor Amorelli, Patrick Lange, Rudy Von Berg, and Magnus Ditlev. A third and final large pack, four minutes down from the leaders, contained Matt Hanson, Chris Lieferman, Cam Wurf, Sebastian Kienle, Joe Skipper, and Lionel Sanders. Laidlow was the one to take charge in the initial miles of the bike, setting an average pace of 27 miles per hour over the first 25 miles. Max Neumann was the only one willing to take the bait, staying just out of Laidlow's draft to avoid a penalty. Behind them, big groups stuck together as the crosswinds picked up through the lava fields. Fifty seconds down, the first chase group of 11 included Ditlev, Blummenfelt, Iden, O'Donnell, and Bakkegard; almost two minutes behind was a group of 18 that included contenders like Lange, Currie, Ben Hoffman, and Denis Chevrot. At mile 30 on the bike, the massive groups continued through the rolling hills on the way to Hawi. With 42 men racing within 5 minutes of each other, space was hard to come by – and the referees noticed. As with the women's race on Thursday, the penalties began early and often, with Angert, Clement Mignon, Mathias Petersen, and Arnad Gilloux being the first to serve their five-minute punishment for position infractions. Leon Chevalier soon joined them for a one-minute penalty as well. Soon, more setbacks started to snowball in the men's field. With each passing mile, Sanders saw the race get away from him as his position slipped from 4:42 down out of the water to 7:13 by mile 30. Colin Chartier, who was in the first large pack out of the swim, found it difficult to recover after an early flat tire. Lange seemed unable to jump on to the train of competitors passing him at full speed, and in a shocking twist, pre-race favorite Currie dropped from the race around mile 35. Meanwhile, the men's race began to take shape near the base of Hawi as Ditlev went to the front of the race and took control. Behind him, Laidlow and Neumann could not match the effort, while countrymen and training partners Iden and Blummenfelt sat 30 seconds behind Ditlev, working together near mile 50. Just after the Hawi turnaround, Laidlow reclaimed his lead, but Ditlev, Neumann, Blummenfelt, and Iden were hot on his tail. Further back, a group including Kyle Smith, Tim O'Donnell, and Jesper Svensson trailed the leaders by 2:30; 3:30 back from the leaders were Kristian Hogenhaug and Daniel Bakkegard. A big group of dangerous bike/runners sat 5 minutes behind the front pack that included Wurf, Chevalier, Skipper, Lange, Kienle, and Andreas Dreitz. Near mile 90, disorganization plagued the chase group of Iden, Blummenfelt, Ditlev, and Neumann as they lost an additional 1:30 to the race leader, Laidlow. Further back, Wurf, Kienle, and Chevalier led a rally to try to get within striking distance of the front, putting 2:20 into the Norwegian group over a span of over 10 miles. As the race barreled toward T2, the chaos continued, with Ditlev receiving a five-minute position penalty at a time when most would be making their critical moves in a race. Up front, Laidlow seemed to not know – or care – about what was playing out behind him. Instead, the young gun stayed focused on his own race, surging ahead. By mile 88, Laidlow's lead grew to 2:37; at mile 94, a 4:11 advantage. Heading into T2, Laidlow smashed Cam Wurf's 2018 bike course record with a split of 4:04:36—knocking almost five minutes off the previous time. Behind him, the chase group was six minutes down, and the second chase had 8:30-9:45 to make up. Laidlow set out on the run with a target on his back. The question then became: Would his bold bike strategy pay off, or would it end in disaster? Could he actually beat the notoriously fast Norwegian runners to the finish line? Could anyone? As the men's pro field moved through T2, the field shifted from large packs to a steady trickle. It was soon clear who had paced themselves well on the bike and who had burned their matches. Behind Laidlow, Blummenfelt and Iden led the charge, setting out at a 5:54 minute-per-mile pace to the leader's 6:13 pace. Behind them, O'Donnell and Kienle were the fastest movers in the second chase pack early in the run, along with Ditlev—finally released from his penalty. As Laidlow made his way up the Palani climb, his pace slowed to 6:23. Iden and Blummenfelt powered on, checking their watches to ensure they were sticking to their staggeringly consistent 5:58 pace. With every footfall, they seemed to cut into Laidlow's lead. Neumann, looking to hold his own in his Kona debut, followed suit. Slightly further back, strong runners like Kienle and Ditlev were working together as well, slowly making their way up through the top ten, through the first half of the marathon—as did Joe Skipper. At the halfway point, they found themselves in fifth and sixth place, with elder statesman Kienle offering words of encouragement to the young Dane as they ran together. Between miles 11 and 16, the Norwegians' march toward Laidlow started to stall as the Frenchman found a way to staunch the bleeding. As he made his way out the Queen K, it seemed as if he found a pace he could comfortably sustain. At the turnaround in the infamous Energy Lab, Laidlow could see exactly where he was relative to his competition. He knew he had a lead of just over two minutes, but what he didn't know was whether or not the Norwegians had another gear. Anticipating a battle, Laidlow gathered all he could from the aid stations – cups of ice, a gallon bottle of water to douse himself on the scalding Kona pavement. Indeed, Iden had just decided to drop his friend and training partner, pulling ahead in the Energy Lab just before mile 19, while Blummenfelt trailed behind. With less than eight miles to go, Iden broke out into 4:38 min/mi pace, laser-focused on the task ahead. At mile 22, Iden gave Laidlow a pat on the back to let him know his time at the front was up. With a handshake and a smile, Iden made the pass, striding confidently to the finish line. After the pass, it was the Iden show, as the Norwegian extended his lead to set a new course record with a time of 7:40:24 and a new run course record of 2:36:15. Not far behind, Sam Laidlow valiantly hung on for second place with a time that also broke the previous run record, 7:42:24. Kristian Blummenfelt would fade only slightly, but still stand on the podium with another course record time of 7:43:23. “That was so freaking hard,” Iden said just moments after his record-setting finish. “The last 10K I was worried about the legend of the island killing me. Everything was going pretty smoothly until I caught Sam Laidlow. When I passed him, the island really tried to put me down. But I think my hat must be stronger than the legend of the island. “That was so epic, and I'm so proud of Sam and Kristian making the podium. I'm not sure if I'm coming back here, this was too hard.” What's New in the 303: Asking For a Friend, Is Anything Possible to Change the IRONMAN World Championships? Bill Plock Oct 12, 2022–I promise, this opinion is not rooted in sour grapes. I really think IRONMAN should consider either moving the championship race somewhere affordable with easier logistics, or go back to one day of racing and figuring out how to make it somewhat bigger and equitable for men and women. Much easier said than done. Some have suggested having the men and women race at different times of year, in Kona, or rotating the men and women every other year. It seems to me keeping this format of a Thursday/Saturday race with 5,000 amateurs competing isn't sustainable or good for the race long term. And, I suspect it was quite hard on the island despite the economic windfall estimated at over a $100 million. The IRONMAN World Championships is a very unique sporting event. It's really the most successful pro/am event in the world if you ask me. Sure golf tournaments usually have a VIP pro/am round before the tournament, but name a world championship where the best of all categories compete at the same time in the same venue. What I fear with the new two day format, by more than doubling the number of participants and more than doubling the cost, the Golden Goose of triathlon will get squeezed too tight and stop laying the proverbial egg which lures age group athletes to dedicate their lives (and pocketbooks) to racing in Kona. And for marginal pro's with very little hope at a prize and footing their own bill, maybe they forgo Kona and the field shrinks? After shopping condos for 2023 at unbelievably high prices, I know 303 probably won't be able to bring you first hand stories and celebrate the success of our well represented state of Colorado. I”m sure we aren't the only ones and I would fear, more importantly, if deserving athletes and their families forgo participating because of costs. I know that has happened over the years, but now it will probably become a reality more and more. This race, Kona, is way more than a race. It's a celebration. It's a lifetime pursuit and a lifestyle. The red carpets are literally rolled out. Age group athletes feel like rock stars. And they are. But the race needs folks like us, and volunteers, and fans and industry support. We all know it costs a fortune to attend the Olympics, or a Super Bowl. They are exclusive as well. But they are TV sports and most of the world is happy to watch at home. And those venues take place in large cities and are accessible by car. It's easy and affordable to be near the venue in most cases and feel the vibe. But not in Kona. You pay to get there or you don't. No drive by's happening there. This year it seemed to go fairly “ok” logistically from all accounts but no doubt there were complaints. We were supposed to go, but our condo was mysteriously condemned due to “mold” in late July—I'm skeptical and think it went back on the market for double the rate. That's what happened to pro Joe Skipper who almost pulled out when his condo booking was revoked and they asked for three times more and he vented frustration on his IG account. https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch27WEirBdO/ I am curious how the two midnight finishes played out and if it was electric like always. I can't imagine any men racing on Saturday hung out to cheer Thursday. I was sad to miss Mike Reilly's last call. I was bummed to miss all of it. I'm torn because I loved watching the pro women race by themselves and get the attention they deserve and race under more fair conditions without the fast age-group men interferring and having more favorable weather. But as far as a race experience, I've heard some complaints about less aid stations because of less volunteers available and a few other minor things. Said finisher and triathlon coach Lauren Vallee who will be featured on our podcast this weekend to talk about all this, “There was a notable decrease in volunteers, but that's expected given the demand this event takes on the community. We knew in advance where aid would be and given the opportunity to plan accordingly. The run aid stations being farther apart certainly impacted peoples days, but I decided to race with a bottle and had no issues with getting anything I needed from one station to another.” This race is already darn hard to qualify for, now it's darn hard to afford. With so many more participants, volunteers, and spectators converging on the big island with the same amount of bed space as always, does this just make the sport that much less inclusive than it already is? There is already a correlation between the high incomes of triathletes and participation, does this just makes it worse? It must. Condo's for 2023 have more than doubled in cost to more than $500 per night plus fees for a one bedroom. I booked a two bedroom condo for this year (the one condemned), in the same building, for $225 per night. And I'm just a guy with laptop. I don't have race fees (which are going up substantially next year), bike transport and all that goes with racing. I really don't fault the tourism industry, it's a free market, take what you can get, and during Covid they got pretty much nothing. Thats how it works. And IRONMAN must see a demand of people willing to pay to play, but something has to give, and it will at some point. I get the tradition of this race and importance of its heritage, legacy and the aspiration it provides. I get the mentality of “you can't move the Boston Marathon to Las Vegas and call it the Boston Marathon.” But this is the IRONMAN World Championship. It's not the Kona World Championship. It could be somewhere else like what happens with the 70.3's. The solution is not easy, nor do I really have one other than being open to changing something to keep it accessible to not only athletes, but to fans, supporters, volunteers and others who want this sport to have the best championship possible. I'm just asking for a friend, posing a question of what, if anything is possible. That corresponds to 1440 in the UK, 1540 CET and 0940 Eastern Time. The race will be broadcast live, with the event the first of 11 IRONMAN 70.3 events to be broadcast in 2022 in a new partnership with Outside TV. You will be able to watch for free via web, mobile or connected TV app. PRO Men Let's kick off with the triathlon racing return of Alistair Brownlee. Not for the first time in his career, it's been a long road back from injury and surgery for the two-time Olympic Champion. Lionel Sanders is no stranger to this race – he went 3rd / 1st / 1st / 2nd between 2015 and 2018 – and is on a similar road to Brownlee for the IRONMAN World Championship St George. Whatever happens during the swim and bike, he's expecting this one to come down to the late stages of the run… and is very confident of where his form is at for that final discipline. Ben Kanute must be a strong contender, having won the last two editions. He has already raced well this year – third at CLASH Miami – and will surely be better here as a result of that. He's already said that Oceanside is an event he is excited for. Sam Long, the winner in Miami, is on the start list but after his impressive start to the year he is seemingly set to skip this one and fully focus on prep for St. George. Jason West, who finished second in Miami (and was fifth last year), will race however. No thoughts of May 7 for him however. What's New in the 303: There Is Very Little Information Out There For Athletes With Migraine By Jessica McWhirt I've been researching for the past several weeks to find information for athletes with Migraine. But not only Migraine, athletes with fatigue and dizziness, and how to train and race while living with a chronic illness or disease. There are plenty of lists of famous athletes and Olympians who have migraine: Amanda Beard, Steve Kerr, Ian Thorpe, Dwyane Wade. But these articles rarely go into the details of how these athletes manage the sometimes debilitating effects of Migraine. We just know that they have. It's not helpful. The Cleveland Clinic says, “an exertional headache occurs when an activity causes veins and arteries to expand to allow more blood flow. That expansion and increased blood pressure create pressure in the skull, which causes the pain.” Without further ado, here are some recommendations by sites, my commentary on it, and some things I do in a vain attempt to reduce the severity of the exercise-induced headaches I get after hard efforts, long efforts, or races WHAT MIGRAINE CANADA SUGGESTS When I actually found an article with tips for athletes with Migraine, I've either been doing the suggestion already, I won't do it, or it isn't even applicable. Migraine Canada suggests the following: Stick to a schedule Eat and sleep at regular times Exercise regularly Eat a healthy diet Find factors that are triggering the Migraine (light sensitivity = wear sunglasses; noise sensitivity = wear earplugs) What I do While these all make sense for even someone who doesn't have Migraine, what happens if you already have a daily headache and strenuous exercise makes it worse? Because I do. What if exercise, is in fact, the trigger? Because it is for me. And when you are sticking to a schedule, eating regularly and healthily, and getting enough sleep, then what? Yes, I do these things. I regularly go to bed around 9:00 PM and wake up around 5:30 AM. Lately, I've been trying to eat 6 small meals every 2-3 hours throughout the day. Before that, I'd eat 3 meals every 4ish hours. “Exercising regularly” varies between people, but I workout 6 days per week and one day is reserved for rest and yoga. I try to make sure my diet consists mostly of whole, real foods. So, food that doesn't have a ton of weird ingredients listed or if you left it outside the fridge for too long, it'll go bad. If you also do all these things, and you still have headaches, there are more things to try, so keep reading. WHAT NEW YORK HEADACHE CENTER SAYS Another article (I emailed them about the misspelled title already) differentiates between exertional headaches and effort-induced headaches. Exertional headaches are caused by lifting, pushing, or pulling. They list sex, coughing, sneezing, or straining to shit as some of the triggers for an exertional headache. Effort-induced headaches are caused by aerobic activities like running, swimming, cycling, etc. They think that if you're dehydrated, hypoglycemic, or overheated, this can result in an effort-induced headache. The authors also believe if you're low in Magnesium then this would also contribute to effort-induced headaches. Their recommendations were: To take an NSAID an hour prior to the activity Get a prescription for Indomethacin Do a proper warm-up and cool-down What I do While taking an NSAID every once in a while won't cause much harm, taking one every time before a strenuous workout will actually cause a rebound headache. This is when you essentially become dependent on the NSAID. When the pain-relieving effects wear off, you take another one and another one and another one. A New Kind of Gravel Bike Festival in Elbert County If you love biking, particularly on quiet gravel roads and dirt trails maybe combine it with a family oriented camping event complete with music, food, beer, the Mad Gravel on Memorial Day weekend might be for you. Rattler Racing will host the second annual Mad Gravel race at the picturesque Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch in Elbert County, Colorado on Saturday, May 28th, Sunday, May 29th and Monday, May 30th, 2022. Mad Gravel is now a full-on 3-day weekend event with a little something for everyone. Saturday will be a fast and furious circuit race within the boundaries of the Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch. Runners also get to enjoy most of the same course on a 5K trail course before the cyclists take off. Look for some great winding gravel roads, double track, and a mix of twisty single-track sections. Sunday is the biggie. Racers and riders have the option to pick one of three epic routes along the eastern Colorado slope. Monday including a sweet mountain bike course highlighting the great trails within the ranch. Participants will get to take in amazing views of Colorado's high 14'ers, and enjoy an optimum vantage point of the entire front range. All three days of Mad Gravel are fully supported with multiple aid stations. Mad Gravel 2022 has been through many iterations. There aren't many gravel events where you get to try your hand at a circuit race the day before the big event. Says race director Dave Muscianisi, “In scouting out our mountain bike course last November, we thought portions of that course would be perfect for a gravel circuit. And with a circuit race already set up, how about starting the weekend with a trail run? And, since we have 3 days to work with, let's get the MGXC mountain bike race going on Monday. Why? While many would consider that a risk, Von Berg's approach marks him out as a man likely to achieve success in whatever career path he chooses. “I am driven by the fact that whatever I do in life, I want to do it extremely well, to my fullest capability, and discover how well I can do it. That is triathlon for me. Endurance News: The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) has today announced the launch of the PTO Tour revealing dates and locations for the first ever PTO US Open, PTO Canadian Open and the 2nd edition of the game-changing team competition – The Collins Cup. The PTO Tour is a consolidation of PTO events into a ‘Tour' concept where each event will see the world's greatest non-drafting professional male and female triathletes competing for a prize purse of $1,000,0000 for each Open and $1,500,000 for The Collins Cup. With a full complement of events the PTO Tour will consist of a US Open, a Canadian Open, Asian Open, European Open and The Collins Cup. Professional Races in 2022 will see a men's race and women's race each a 100km distance to determine the ultimate athlete: 2km swim, 80km bike leg and a 18km run. As well as professional racing, the PTO Tour will, for the first time, introduce age group racing, giving amateurs the opportunity to meet and race alongside the professionals, a hallmark of the sport of Triathlon. In addition to sprint (25 km) and middle distance (100km) age group triathlons, the PTO Tour events will include additional racing opportunities in the component sports of the Triathlon – Swim, Bike, Run, making the PTO Tour events a festival-like celebration of multisport. Age Group registration will open on 25th January. Just like The Collins Cup, each PTO Tour event will have world class TV production broadcast live to a global audience and high-quality shoulder programming showcasing the stories of the PTO Professionals. World Triathlon sanctions Russian Triathlon Federation World Triathlon's Executive Board has decided to sanction the Russian Triathlon Federation due to… ‘the significant number of doping cases in Russia.' The sanction will be effective for one year, and World Triathlon will review quarterly that necessary measures are being followed. The sanctions approved by the Executive Board, consist of the following: The Russian Triathlon Federation will reach an agreement with RUSADA to test all Russian athletes, especially all those athletes who will be competing internationally. The Russian Triathlon Federation will, together with World Triathlon, create an education plan for Russian athletes and coaches in regard to doping issues. The Russian Triathlon Federation will compensate and refund the prize monies previously awarded to the Russian triathletes sanctioned with doping offences. Russian Triathlon Federation officials must resign from any World Triathlon and European bodies for the period of one year. The Russian Triathlon Federation cannot organise any World or European Triathlon events for one year (until the end of 2022). The Russian National Federation is to reimburse World Triathlon for all costs (including but not limited to laboratory fees, hearing expenses and travel) related to any of the violations of the anti-doping rules committed by their athletes and coaches. Sanctions must be taken inside the Russian National Triathlon Federation for any coach or official that is involved in any doping violation, and collaboration must be made with World Triathlon disciplinary bodies. Kristian was originally a swimmer, but also excelled on his feet by competing at the 2011 European Cross-Country Championships as a junior and showcasing the necessary tools to excel in the sport of triathlon. Blummenfelt prospered as a junior, winning numerous events. Victories at ITU Junior European Cup events in Brno, Tabor and Antalya were followed by a Senior ITU victory at Tartu. His first major success came at the 2015 European Championship where he picked up a bronze medal. Kristian's Norwegian National titles came in 2015, 2016 and 2018, and now he was also showing off his talents on the IRONMAN 70.3 circuit. He notched three consecutive victories in Bahrain between 2017 and 2019, and in both the 2018 and 2019 renewals set new world records for the half-IRONMAN. 2019 was a highly successful campaign for the Norwegian as he was also crowned winner of the ITU World Triathlon Series Grand Final. He finished a highly creditable fourth meanwhile at the 70.3 World Championship in Nice, a race won by one of his training partners Gustav Iden. Kristian is also an Olympian, having competed at the 2016 Rio Games where he finished in 13th place. He won gold at the Tokyo 2021, won again in Edmonton and World Championship double August 21st. Blummenfelt's sporting hero growing up was Alexander Dale Oen, a swimmer from his native Norway and a European champion in 2008. Endurance News: Kristian Blummenfelt sprints to Edmonton win and World Championship double Win or lose (and this year it has mostly been the former for the Norwegian), Kristian Blummenfelt impacts more races than anyone else. So powerful is his cycling ability and mentality, you feel as though he is on a mission to challenge anyone who thinks they can breakaway on the bike (from him) and win. The result of that – for me at least, and it has been the case for some time now – is that the first major measure I look at during a race is not who is leading the swim, who is in the lead pack, is there a break etc. It's, “did you exit the swim ahead, or behind Kristian Blummenfelt?” Ahead, and – if you have the legs to follow him – you gain access to the world's greatest domestique (!) to help overcome any swim deficit. Preview of the Showdown in St. George at IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships 303 is heading to St. George to bring you in-person coverage of the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships. With no Kona this year, all eyes are on the desert of southwest Utah. With a hilly run course, fast bike and a predicted temperature near 100 degrees, the real sizzle isn't the rubber meeting the road, it's the clash of top triathletes on heels of the Collins Cup that has no doubt sparked some rivalries. In the women's field in particular, the match up of Daniela Ryf and Taylor Knibb seems most intriguing. At the Collins Cup they went head to head and Knibb had the biggest victory of the day of all athletes crushing Daniela by double digit minutes. But Daniela reportedly wasn't feeling her best and we all know of the four time IRONMAN World Champion capabilities. No doubt she is looking for some revenge. Obviously as the championship, the field is stacked. Maybe there is a chink in Ryf's armor? Maybe not, but Lucy Charles, Ellie Salthouse, Sky Moench, Paula Findlay and Jeanni Metzler, all with great races in Slovakia could be in the mix at the end. No doubt there are others like Holly Lawrence who crashed in the Collins Cup could fight for the podium. The mens field offers similar drama with Sam Long, the top ranked American and one of the favorites will have stiff competition from Lionel Sanders, Gustav Iden and fellow Norwegian and Olympic Gold Medalist Kristian Blummenfelt. Last May, Long and Sanders battled shoulder to shoulder in St. George and the two have had some fun social media banter in the last 12 months. After the race in May, Long said he knew he could take advantage of the downhill with his long stride and he did so almost winning so it will be interesting to see what happens. The Norwegians are going to be tough to beat. Both Iden and Blummenfelt have had fantastic seasons. Iden handedly won his race in Slovakia and Blummenfelt has focused on training for St. George since winning Olympic gold. With no Jan Frodeno, putting odds on this race is challenging. An exclusive bunch has made it a “double triple” in recent years, pedaling back the way they came. Slated for late July/early August 2022. Breck 100 Mountain bikers have come to know this, not the Leadville 100, as Colorado's ultimate endeavor on a saddle — a tantalizing route shaped like a clover leaf, crossing the Continental Divide three times. But the race has been on hold for two years; the pandemic again caused a cancellation this summer. And the past two plans were a condensed course, closer to 70 miles. That's when this whacky mountain bike foray begins, in the darkness of 10 p.m. It begins in Salida, where some of the whackiest riders reside, molded by the vaunted Monarch Crest. Vapor is reserved for the most skilled and wilderness prepared. One must negotiate technical singletrack by headlamp and sustain long climbs over 125 miles. Slated for Aug. 26, 2022. Kristian was originally a swimmer, but also excelled on his feet by competing at the 2011 European Cross-Country Championships as a junior and showcasing the necessary tools to excel in the sport of triathlon. Blummenfelt prospered as a junior, winning numerous events. Victories at ITU Junior European Cup events in Brno, Tabor and Antalya were followed by a Senior ITU victory at Tartu. His first major success came at the 2015 European Championship where he picked up a bronze medal. Kristian's Norwegian National titles came in 2015, 2016 and 2018, and now he was also showing off his talents on the IRONMAN 70.3 circuit. He notched three consecutive victories in Bahrain between 2017 and 2019, and in both the 2018 and 2019 renewals set new world records for the half-IRONMAN. 2019 was a highly successful campaign for the Norwegian as he was also crowned winner of the ITU World Triathlon Series Grand Final. He finished a highly creditable fourth meanwhile at the 70.3 World Championship in Nice, a race won by one of his training partners Gustav Iden. Kristian is also an Olympian, having competed at the 2016 Rio Games where he finished in 13th place. He won gold at the Tokyo 2021, won again in Edmonton and World Championship double August 21st. Karen Smyers, Team US Captain, commented, “While we are disappointed for Heather that she cannot attend the race after working so hard to qualify, we are very lucky to have an in-form McCauley ready to don the Stars and Stripes for Team US.” McCauley, who has just returned from maternity leave after her second child was born only five months ago, recently finished 2nd at IM Finland and commented, “It is a blessing and an honour to represent the USA at the Collins Cup. (Aug. 17, 2021) – IRONMAN today announced changes to the 2021 and 2022 editions of the IRONMAN® 70.3® World Championship based on the continued global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Travel and border restrictions are expected to prevent as many as half of the athlete field from being able to attend the 2021 Intermountain Healthcare IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship presented by Utah Sports Commission in St. George, Utah. As a result, the race will shift to a single-day event with both men and women racing on Saturday, September 18. Additionally, the 2022 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship that was set to be held in Taupō, New Zealand will also now be held in St. George, Utah, giving the travel-restricted athlete community an opportunity to race in the “Land of Endurance” with a two-day format from October 28-29, 2022. World Championships Ironman Kona will not take place this year, moves to February 2022 After it was revealed earlier today that Ironman is offering athletes the option to defer their Kona slots from this year to 2023, 2024 or 2025, there is now much more far-reaching news: it is rumored that the Ironman World Championship in Kona will not take place this year and has been pushed to February 2022. That rumor comes from a source known to the Triathlon Today editors who is in close contact with the Ironman organization. The news is expected to be officially announced very soon. “It is the government in Hawaii that has made this decision. Due to the high infection rate in Hawaii, it will be decided that the World Championships will not take place this year either. UPDATED RACE PLANS ANNOUNCED FOR 2021 AND 2022 EDITIONS OF THE IRONMAN 70.3 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TAMPA, Fla. (Aug. 17, 2021) – IRONMAN today announced changes to the 2021 and 2022 editions of the IRONMAN® 70.3® World Championship based on the continued global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Travel and border restrictions are expected to prevent as many as half of the athlete field from being able to attend the 2021 Intermountain Healthcare IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship presented by Utah Sports Commission in St. George, Utah. As a result, the race will shift to a single-day event with both men and women racing on Saturday, September 18. Additionally, the 2022 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship that was set to be held in Taupō, New Zealand will also now be held in St. George, Utah, giving the travel-restricted athlete community an opportunity to race in the “Land of Endurance” with a two-day format from October 28-29, 2022. World Championships Ironman Kona will not take place this year, moves to February 2022 After it was revealed earlier today that Ironman is offering athletes the option to defer their Kona slots from this year to 2023, 2024 or 2025, there is now much more far-reaching news: it is rumored that the Ironman World Championship in Kona will not take place this year and has been pushed to February 2022. That rumor comes from a source known to the Triathlon Today editors who is in close contact with the Ironman organization. The news is expected to be officially announced very soon. “It is the government in Hawaii that has made this decision. Due to the high infection rate in Hawaii, it will be decided that the World Championships will not take place this year either. We believe it's important to remember that each of us is here on purpose for a purpose. We founded the YTP on sharing stories of purpose, and today's episode is more of the same. Rudy Von Berg found his purpose at the young age of five when his dream was born to win Kona as a professional triathlete. He was on the big island watching his dad, who remains one of the best in the world in his age group, compete at the Ironman World Championship. After graduating college in 2017, Rudy went right into triathlon as his singular focus. Although he is not even racing the Ironman distance yet, his dream remains very much alive, and I'd say he's well on his way to attaining it. At the age of 27, he's already gained serious street cred with several memorable performances, including ending Jesse Thomas's six-year win streak at Wildflower in 2018, a third-place finish at the 2019 Ironman 70.3 worlds in Nice France, as well as many podium finishes along the way and a spectacular 5th place at Challenge Daytona at the end of 2020. He is currently ranked 8th in the world by the Professional Triathletes Organization, and indeed we are to see him in the number one spot in the future. Although this conversation was the first time we met, we knew going into it that Rudy has a relentless fire to attain his goal and be the absolute best in whatever he pursues. Endurance News: Sam Long, “Absolutely a Break Through Race.” St. George Utah, May 1st 2021–For the last couple of years they have exchanged blows on social media and swapped Strava KOM’s on Mt. Lemmon, but yesterday they battled in person to very end. Sam Long and Lionel Sanders ran shoulder to shoulder for last three miles of IRONMAN 70.3 St. George, the North American 70.3 Championship. If it had been a 70.1, Sam may have won, but with an obvious final grimace, Sanders had one last kick and pulled away in the final turns and edged Long by five seconds. Both men collapsed at the finish line where the emotion and pain of the effort was clear when they stood and embraced like two prize fighters with nothing else to give. The made for the movies ending culminated a day that saw Long and Sanders make up time on the bike putting them in position to chase down the leaders on the run that included Boulder’s Rudy Von Berg who finished fourth. For Sam Long this was a breakthrough race. He knew that if he found himself in the exact position he did, that all his hard work had paid off. He knew Sanders was probably the one to beat and his respect (maybe admiration) for Sanders was obvious at the finish line. During the broadcast, analyst and pro triathlete Dede Griesbauer (who did an amazing job) thought Long’s move near the top of the last hill about 3 miles out may have been too soon. He passed peacefully in his sleep due to heart failure, his son said. Dick Hoyt and his son, Rick, became Boston Marathon legends after their first run in 1980, during which the dad pushed Rick in a custom racing chair, according to the Boston Athletic Association. Ten Colorado based pro’s and a large contingent of athletes from Boulder’s BASE team raced the three day event. On the pro podium hoisting some champagne from Boulder were Chris Leiferman (4) and Rudy Von Berg (5). Germany’s Jan Frodeno won the men’s race over Lionel Sanders (2) and Ben Kanute (3). For the women, in a bit of a surprise, British triathlete Jodie Stimpson edged out favored Lucy Charles-Barclay of Britain by almost a minute and a half. Rounding out the women’s podium were Jackie Hering, Sara Perez Sala and Skye Moench. Boulder’s Lisa Bechares and Lesley Smith (A BASE sponsored athlete) finished 11th and 12th respectively. Endurance News: PTO Championship and Challenge Daytona; Triathlon Forever Changed? Maybe so Daytona Beach–It’s easy to want to compare the Professional Triathlon Organisation’s Championship (PTO) at Challenge Daytona with IRONMAN’s Kona. You really can’t though. If this were boxing, it’s like watching light and middle weight boxers fight versus heavy weights. One is full of action, flurries, speed and rapid fire punches, the other, a war of strength and stamina and seeing who can withstand the most for the longest. There is room in this world for both. There will be fans of both. But for the pros’ yesterday may have been a game changer. Kona is Kona. It’s a magical kind of place with known foes like heat, the Energy Lab, the winds on the Queen K and the hill on Palani. Daytona, like the backdrop for this race, was about speed and more speed. Like the NASCAR race that put Daytona on the map, these triathletes jockeyed for position all day long. They averaged up to 30 miles per hour on the bike! The road is flat, the only foe is the athlete in front, and the voices in their heads telling them when to make a move or not. For the pros, with their race contained entirely inside the 2.5 mile oval that is one of the most famous racing venues in the world, it was all right in front of them. Lap after lap. 20 times on the bike, four times on the run, and even twice on the swim. Yes, there is a large lake inside the track along with an RV park, smaller tracks and plenty of open space. The whole thing was a made-for-television event. The race was about speed and making moves. In the men’s race, Coloradans Matt Hanson, Rudy Von Berg and Sam Long finished 2nd, 5th and 9th respectively. Both Hanson and Long came from fairly far back after the swim to chase down the leaders and contend for the podium. Hanson had the fastest run of the day with a blistering 5:20/mile pace over the 18k run. While Long made up his deficit mostly on the bike with a fastest bike of the day riding the 80k course in 1:38:24 averaging 30.2 mph! He showed moments of speed on the run trying to catch up and at one point he held second place! Von Berg with a fast swim and bike, ran in contention all day. He and Long battled on the run for a couple of laps creating a buzz in the crowd watching on the jumbo tron—sort of a modern day “Iron War.” Von Berg pushed ahead of Long but slipped back on the last lap finishing just off the podium behind Britain’s George Goodwin, a middle distance specialist and long course veteran Lionel Sanders—who turned in the second fastest bike split and came from far back himself. The Thursday morning crash happened on U.S. 95 south of Boulder City, according to Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Jason Buratczuk. Around 9:40 a.m., a box truck struck a group of about 20 bicyclists. Four men and one woman died at the scene, according to authorities. The box truck remained at the scene for several hours after the collision, as authorities investigated what caused the crash. "It doesn't appear to be impairment," Buratczuk said. "It appears to be a tragic accident." Of the four bicyclists injured, one of the riders was flown to a hospital in a helicopter in critical condition. It appeared the bicyclists were part of an organized ride, Buratczuk said. They had a chase vehicle with them with flashers. The driver of the chase vehicle was injured and transported to a hospital. The driver of the box truck was not injured. U.S. Highway 95 southbound will be closed till about 6 p.m. Thursday, according to Nevada Department of Transportation spokesman Tony Illia. Endurance News: PTO Championship and Challenge Daytona; Triathlon Forever Changed? Maybe so Daytona Beach–It’s easy to want to compare the Professional Triathlon Organisation’s Championship (PTO) at Challenge Daytona with IRONMAN’s Kona. You really can’t though. If this were boxing, it’s like watching light and middle weight boxers fight versus heavy weights. One is full of action, flurries, speed and rapid fire punches, the other, a war of strength and stamina and seeing who can withstand the most for the longest. There is room in this world for both. There will be fans of both. But for the pros’ yesterday may have been a game changer. Kona is Kona. It’s a magical kind of place with known foes like heat, the Energy Lab, the winds on the Queen K and the hill on Palani. Daytona, like the backdrop for this race, was about speed and more speed. Like the NASCAR race that put Daytona on the map, these triathletes jockeyed for position all day long. They averaged up to 30 miles per hour on the bike! The road is flat, the only foe is the athlete in front, and the voices in their heads telling them when to make a move or not. For the pros, with their race contained entirely inside the 2.5 mile oval that is one of the most famous racing venues in the world, it was all right in front of them. Lap after lap. 20 times on the bike, four times on the run, and even twice on the swim. Yes, there is a large lake inside the track along with an RV park, smaller tracks and plenty of open space. The whole thing was a made-for-television event. The race was about speed and making moves. In the men’s race, Coloradans Matt Hanson, Rudy Von Berg and Sam Long finished 2nd, 5th and 9th respectively. Both Hanson and Long came from fairly far back after the swim to chase down the leaders and contend for the podium. Hanson had the fastest run of the day with a blistering 5:20/mile pace over the 18k run. While Long made up his deficit mostly on the bike with a fastest bike of the day riding the 80k course in 1:38:24 averaging 30.2 mph! He showed moments of speed on the run trying to catch up and at one point he held second place! Von Berg with a fast swim and bike, ran in contention all day. He and Long battled on the run for a couple of laps creating a buzz in the crowd watching on the jumbo tron—sort of a modern day “Iron War.” Von Berg pushed ahead of Long but slipped back on the last lap finishing just off the podium behind Britain’s George Goodwin, a middle distance specialist and long course veteran Lionel Sanders—who turned in the second fastest bike split and came from far back himself. Endurance News: Chris Leiferman Wins IM Florida, Coloradans Hanson and Long 2nd and 3rd Colorado was well represented at IRONMAN Florida on Saturday. As the world was learning who our next President was going to be, quite a race in Panama City was unfolding. In the end, it was close, but Boulder’s Chris Leiferman out dueled Matt Hanson (who recently moved to Castle Rock) and Sam Long. Long led about 2/3 of the way through but fell back and Leiferman came off the bike in the lead a minute ahead of Germany’s Andreas Dietz and six minutes ahead of Long and 10 minutes in front of Hanson. Leiferman then led the rest of the race but both Hanson and Long significantly closed the gap on the run. Hanson cut nearly 8 minutes into the lead with Long just 29 seconds behind Hanson. Said Leiferman, “yeah, they were catching up to me, but I’m glad it wasn’t a run race and I had the swim and bike to keep the lead. I have had the worse run build up this year, so knowing where I can go for future races.” Leiferman finished in 7:52:44, Hanson in 7:55:02 and Long came in third with a 7:55:33. Long became the youngest American to ever finish under eight hours in an IRONMAN. Chris Nikic - First Down Syndrome Athlete to Complete an Ironman A lot of people needed a really good story this year, and 21-year-old Chris Nikic delivered just that on Saturday, when he became the first person with Down syndrome to finish an Ironman. Racing alongside his coach and guide, Dan Grieb (a 16-time Ironman finisher), Nikic overcame high surf, a crash on the bike, and muggy conditions on the run to finish with just 14 minutes left to spare before the 17-hour cutoff. “The run was really awesome because of all the people cheering for me,” Nikic said. “And when I got to the end, I just started running faster because of all the people cheering. I was so excited to hear them say, ‘You are an Ironman.’” According to Grieb, Nikic had a spill on the bike while going downhill at about 19 mph. His knees were pretty scuffed up, but the thought of not getting back on the bike never crossed his mind. “We engage in a lot of banter on the course to keep him going,” Grieb said. “At one point he said the S-word, and that turned into a four-hour conversation. That back and forth banter is how we get through the tough spots, like riding up a hill or a crash.” Like most first-time Ironman finishers, Nikic is left with some blisters on his ankles and feet, but said he otherwise felt pretty good when he woke up the following morning. Don’t expect him to be the one-and-done Ironman type, either. He already has his sights set on the Ironman World Championship next October, as well as continuing his work as a public speaker. It’s a story people are clearly eager to follow. Over the course of the weekend, 30,000 people tuned in live to watch Ironman’s Facebook coverage of his finish—and Nikic went from 20,000 to 74,000 followers on Instagram. Olympic Gold medalist Nicola Spirig comes in close second behind Beth Potter from Great Britain. After winning Olympic gold at London 2012 in a thrilling finale, Spirig then came second to Gwen Jorgensen at Rio 2016, making her the most successful female Olympic triathlete. Vincent Luis (French) bested Alistair Brownlee by 3 seconds. Brownlee is Olympic champion in both London 2012 and Rio 2016. Gustav Iden came in 7th. Kristian Blummenfelt was having calf issues prior to the race. Kristian posted - After struggling with a bad lower left leg for the last three weeks, I wasn’t really sure what I could expect yesterday. Was in a solid form on the swim and bike, but the leg snapped again early on the run and ended up with a DNF. With only a month left until the big day in @challengedaytona I need recover quickly to have a chance over there. What's New in the 303: Cyclocross Race in Castle Rock, Another All-Star Showing. Castle Rock—Once again the women open featured an all star cast with Katie Compton leading the way at the US Open cyclocross race in Castle Rock. Ellen Noble, Anna Dorovskikh, Amelia Shea and Lauren Zoerner rounded out the top five. In the men’s division Eric Brunner kept his winning streak alive in the Men’s open as did Carlos Casali in 40plus open division. Riders this week were treated to temperatures about 60 degrees warmer than the last race hosted there just two weeks ago. Race Director Barry Lee and Dave Towle, via Facebook There was a good turnout in all categories and veteran race announcer, Dave Towle said, “The incredible number of juniors, parents and the great vibe stood out. Strong community that had a nice day to remember why we love this sport, place and most importantly each other.” The race this Saturday originally scheduled for Westminster may be moved to Parker due to increased COVID restrictions. Lance Panigutti from Without Limits is still waiting for the official word from Tri-County health about moving the race. Tom Miller, Endurance Cyclist Extraordinaire, Lucky to be Alive–His Story Throughout the summer of 2020, Tom Miller had noticed something wasn’t right with riding. He rides bikes–a lot, like over 10,000 miles per year. As a member of the Rocky Mountain Cycling Club (RMCC) he participates in their triple crown quest–three major rides such as Denver to Aspen in one day. He rides a lot indoors and tracks every pedal stroke and every heart beat. He knows his body and expected performance well. He is in shape. He played college football. He understands fatigue and training so what was happening these past couple of months was bizarre. In the end, it was close, but Boulder’s Chris Leiferman out dueled Matt Hanson (who recently moved to Castle Rock) and Sam Long. Long led about 2/3 of the way through but fell back and Leiferman came off the bike in the lead a minute ahead of Germany’s Andreas Dietz and six minutes ahead of Long and 10 minutes in front of Hanson. Leiferman then led the rest of the race but both Hanson and Long significantly closed the gap on the run. Hanson cut nearly 8 minutes into the lead with Long just 29 seconds behind Hanson. Said Leiferman, “yeah, they were catching up to me, but I’m glad it wasn’t a run race and I had the swim and bike to keep the lead. I have had the worse run build up this year, so knowing where I can go for future races.” Leiferman finished in 7:52:44, Hanson in 7:55:02 and Long came in third with a 7:55:33. Long became the youngest American to ever finish under eight hours in an IRONMAN. Chris Nikic - First Down Syndrome Athlete to Complete an Ironman A lot of people needed a really good story this year, and 21-year-old Chris Nikic delivered just that on Saturday, when he became the first person with Down syndrome to finish an Ironman. Racing alongside his coach and guide, Dan Grieb (a 16-time Ironman finisher), Nikic overcame high surf, a crash on the bike, and muggy conditions on the run to finish with just 14 minutes left to spare before the 17-hour cutoff. “The run was really awesome because of all the people cheering for me,” Nikic said. “And when I got to the end, I just started running faster because of all the people cheering. I was so excited to hear them say, ‘You are an Ironman.’” According to Grieb, Nikic had a spill on the bike while going downhill at about 19 mph. His knees were pretty scuffed up, but the thought of not getting back on the bike never crossed his mind. “We engage in a lot of banter on the course to keep him going,” Grieb said. “At one point he said the S-word, and that turned into a four-hour conversation. That back and forth banter is how we get through the tough spots, like riding up a hill or a crash.” Like most first-time Ironman finishers, Nikic is left with some blisters on his ankles and feet, but said he otherwise felt pretty good when he woke up the following morning. Don’t expect him to be the one-and-done Ironman type, either. He already has his sights set on the Ironman World Championship next October, as well as continuing his work as a public speaker. It’s a story people are clearly eager to follow. Over the course of the weekend, 30,000 people tuned in live to watch Ironman’s Facebook coverage of his finish—and Nikic went from 20,000 to 74,000 followers on Instagram. Olympic Gold medalist Nicola Spirig comes in close second behind Beth Potter from Great Britain. After winning Olympic gold at London 2012 in a thrilling finale, Spirig then came second to Gwen Jorgensen at Rio 2016, making her the most successful female Olympic triathlete. Vincent Luis (French) bested Alistair Brownlee by 3 seconds. Brownlee is Olympic champion in both London 2012 and Rio 2016. Gustav Iden came in 7th. Kristian Blummenfelt was having calf issues prior to the race. Kristian posted - After struggling with a bad lower left leg for the last three weeks, I wasn’t really sure what I could expect yesterday. Was in a solid form on the swim and bike, but the leg snapped again early on the run and ended up with a DNF. With only a month left until the big day in @challengedaytona I need recover quickly to have a chance over there What's New in the 303: Cyclocross Race in Castle Rock, Another All-Star Showing. Castle Rock—Once again the women open featured an all star cast with Katie Compton leading the way at the US Open cyclocross race in Castle Rock. Ellen Noble, Anna Dorovskikh, Amelia Shea and Lauren Zoerner rounded out the top five. In the men’s division Eric Brunner kept his winning streak alive in the Men’s open as did Carlos Casali in 40plus open division. Riders this week were treated to temperatures about 60 degrees warmer than the last race hosted there just two weeks ago. Race Director Barry Lee and Dave Towle, via Facebook There was a good turnout in all categories and veteran race announcer, Dave Towle said, “The incredible number of juniors, parents and the great vibe stood out. Strong community that had a nice day to remember why we love this sport, place and most importantly each other.” The race this Saturday originally scheduled for Westminster may be moved to Parker due to increased COVID restrictions. Lance Panigutti from Without Limits is still waiting for the official word from Tri-County health about moving the race. Tom Miller, Endurance Cyclist Extraordinaire, Lucky to be Alive–His Story Throughout the summer of 2020, Tom Miller had noticed something wasn’t right with riding. He rides bikes–a lot, like over 10,000 miles per year. As a member of the Rocky Mountain Cycling Club (RMCC) he participates in their triple crown quest–three major rides such as Denver to Aspen in one day. He rides a lot indoors and tracks every pedal stroke and every heart beat. He knows his body and expected performance well. He is in shape. He played college football. He understands fatigue and training so what was happening these past couple of months was bizarre. Triathlon is in Rudy von Berg's genes. The 26-year-old grew up in a household where swim-bike-run was the norm. His Dad Rudolphe Von Berg first race at the Ironman World Championships in the 1980s. And von Berg Jnr has been dreaming of winning the iconic race since he first stepped on the Big Island as a 5 year old, to watch his Dad compete. In the last couple of years, under coach Luc Van Lierde, Rudy von Berg has shown he means business. In 2019 he finished 3rd at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. Rudy von Berg is a professional triathlete. Born in the USA, he grew up in France and is now back in the US, currently living and training in Boulder, Colorado. Over the past 18 months, he's been tearing up the circuit with victories at (among others) the 2018 70.3 South American championship, the 2018/19 70.3 European Championship, and the 2019 70.3 North America Championship. He comes by his triathlon abilities honestly; his father competed at IRONMAN Kona three times when Rudy was growing up. At 25 years old, he's an athlete to watch in the coming years, particularly in the upcoming 70.3 World Championship being held right near where Rudy grew up in France!
