Trail Runner Nation began in November of 2011 with a singular purpose or WHY: To share knowledge with our Nation of runners that will help them become better runners, run longer. In this candid conversation, Don and Scott talk about how this WHY was formed and how it has guided the podcast: from choosing guests and topics. We credit this clarity to a book by Simon Sinek, "Start with Why". We highly recommend it to everyone that might be looking at life or projects that are a little blurry. As an appetizer, please watch Simon in his 18-minute Ted Talk from 2010. Please consider supporting these great partners of Trail Runner Nation that sponsored this episode:   Janji UCAN

II Thessalonians: Prophetical Expectations

Study Notes Ed Underwood 2 Thessalonians Prophetical Expectations Now regarding the arrival of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to be with him... (2 Thessalonians 2:1) The thirteen Pauline Epistles develop the foundational truths of Christianity introduced in the Gospels. Paul wrote nine letters to churches and four to individuals. He writes from the perspective of the Apostle to the Gentiles, church-planter, pastor, and friend. His letters contain instructions, exhortations, and corrections that were real-time—messages to real people, gathered in real churches, with real problems as they endeavored to follow Christ and make a difference in their world. One consistent theme undergirds all of Paul’s teaching—the reality of every believer’s position in Christ. Since Paul wrote his first letter to the Thessalonians, false teachers have confused the believers in a way that shook their faith. He had told them that the Lord could return at any moment (1 Thessalonians 4:15-18) and that the Day of the Lord would come suddenly, as a thief in the night—unexpectedly (1 Thessalonians 5:2). Now, due to the heavy persecution the church was experiencing, some were teaching the error that the Tribulation was upon them, and they had somehow missed the gathering together with the Lord in the air (the Rapture). Paul wrote his second letter to his beloved friends to correct these erroneous ideas with comforting prophetical truths. More specifically, to distinguish between the Lord’s imminent return for His church and the Day of the Lord that would be preceded by the short-lived reign of the man of lawlessness, the anti- Christ. “Both Thessalonian epistles are very pastoral. The epistle[s] deals with the hope of the Lord’s return as this relates to Christian experience.” (Tom Constable, 1 Thessalonians, p. 5) The Apostle also addresses one of the most common excesses of those who understand the soon coming of the Lord. Some of the Thessalonians were using their prophetic hope as an excuse to live irresponsibly: In the progression of revelation, 2 Thessalonians reveals new information about the Day of the Lord. I. Paul exhorts the Thessalonian believers to persevere by clarifying events prior to the Day of the Lord and instructs the leaders to deal with lazy Christians. Paul thanks them for their growing faith and love, assures them of their ultimate deliverance from their persecutors who will be judged by Jesus. (1) Paul explains to them that their severe suffering does not mean that Day of the Lord has already come. He had taught them in his last letter that believers are not destined for wrath and now tells them that the Day of the Lord will not come unannounced. A worldwide spiritual rebellion must take place before this Day, and that rebellion will be climaxed by revealing the satanically empowered man of lawlessness. (2, See also: Daniel 9:27; 12:11; Matthew 24:15; 1 John 2:18; Revelation 11:7; 13:1-10). This spirit of lawless rebellion is already at work in the world. Paul asks the church to pray for him as they wait patiently for the Lord and tells them to confront those who are living irresponsibly using the excuse of the soon return of the Lord. (3) OUR INTERPRETATION OF 2 THESSALONIANS 2: Why we believe the Rapture is imminent, but the Day of the Lord cannot begin immediately. The central message of 2 Thessalonians is the truth about the Day of the Lord. An important distinction in 1 Thessalonians is that the Lord’s return for believers will take place suddenly (4:13-18), but that the Day of the Lord would come as a thief in the night. Believers should therefore remain alert, looking forward to both events because we will be delivered from the wrath of the Day of the Lord. (5:1-11) 2 Thessalonians: Remain faithful until Jesus returns! In 2 Thessalonians 2 he teaches them to distinguish between these two events—the moment of our being gathered together with him (v 1) and the period of the Day of the Lord (v 2). In verses 3-12 he demonstrates the difference between the first event (the Rapture) and the second period (the Day of the Lord). Even now the “hidden power of lawlessness” is at work (7a). I take this to be the trajectory of humanity—rebellion against God the Creator. In the future God will remove what is now restraining this lawlessness (7b). This probably refers to the Holy Spirit and suggests that this could be church-age believers who are indwelt by the Spirit (Romans 8:9). Inthefuturetherewillbeacrisis:“thelawlessonewillberevealed”(2:8a).Ibelievethatthebest view of how this will happen is that God will withdraw the church from the world at the Rapture. After that this human leader of lawlessness will lead the world in unrestrained rebellion against God. I believe this is the Antichrist and this rebellion is described in the events of the Tribulation period. After this crisis, Jesus Christ will return to earth to set up His kingdom (2:8b). He will destroy this Antichrist and curtail this rebellion (Psalm 2). II. 2 THESSALONIANS AND YOU: To live responsibly for Christ in a world in rebellion against Him it’s vital that we can discern the times according to prophecy. Dr. Keith Krell does an awesome job of distinguishing between what we believe are the next three future events taught in prophecy: The Rapture: Who: The Lord Jesus snatches His church away. What: An instantaneous event where believers receive new bodies. When: The rapture could occur at any moment. Where: Jesus meets His church in the air. Why: To protect His bride from the wrath to come. The Tribulation: Who: God pours out His discipline and wrath on Israel and the Gentile nations. What: A seven-year period of unprecedented worldwide affliction. When: Following the rapture of the church. Where: Planet earth. Why: To persuade Israel that Jesus is the Messiah. The Millennial Kingdom: Who: The Lord Jesus sets up His earthly kingdom. What: A 1,000-year period to demonstrate how world history could have been. When: Following the seven-year tribulation period. Where: Jerusalem. Why: To fulfill Old Testament promises made to Israel.

Background of the Book of 1st Peter: 1. Who: Peter, one of the disciples, among Jesus’ inner circle. We see his faith in the proclamation of who Jesus is (Matt 16:16) while not fully understanding what Jesus came to do. Certainly his betrayal is well known, but so is his restoration. Throughout Acts we see his leadership in the church and furthering of the faith. According to tradition, Peter was crucified upside down before Nero’s death, about A.D. 66. 2. When: A.D. 64, The reference to Babylon in 5:13 is almost certainly Rome as few people were in Babylon in these days, and Peter spent his final years in Rome. 3. Whom: Gentile Christians in Asia minor, to cities that extend beyond the ministry covered in Acts. 4. What: Facing increasing persecution, Peter wanted to encourage and reassure these believers to remain steady in the faith and count it a privilege to share in Christ’s sufferings. 5. WHY: To withstand attacks on the church from outside the church. We who persevere should be full of hope. We will enjoy end-time salvation as we are already in God’s saving grace through the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ Jesus.

With all we know about how medicine works, we still don’t understand the placebo effect very well. Yet, by all accounts it is very powerful. This episode begins with some interesting research that seems to show that believing you are healthy really makes it so. Source: Howard Brody, M.D. author of “The Placebo Response” (https://amzn.to/2ZzmXzH) Money is a tricky subject for just about everyone. Of course there is the “math of money” that shows how money works numerically but there is also how we feel about money. For example, most experts agree that paying off your mortgage is a bad idea, yet many people feel great when they do it. So, who is right? Joining me to discuss why your attitudes about money are just as important as the math is Morgan Housel. Scott is an associate of the Botanical Preservation Corps and was on the 2010 expedition to Peru collecting seeds and information on medicinal, edible, and sacred plants throughout the Andes. In 2010 Scott opened the Ethnobotanical Conservation Organization or EthnoCO which is a company based in Peru that leads expeditions and sells cultural wares. Inside the Episode: Dolphins...oh dolphins. What’s not to love, right? Well...as Scott tells us, dolphins in Peru have been spotted to have intimate relationships with men in the area. I am going to leave the remainder of this caption up to your imagination, but if you’re looking for more information - then you’ll want to tune into our podcast. Animals of higher intelligence (think primates and mammals) have been observed to seek drugs and sex for pleasure. Why? That’s exactly what we sought to learn on our podcast with Scott, the ethnobotanist and close friend of The Travelers Blueprint. Lemurs in Madagascar have been observed to seek out a very peculiar millipede. They play with it, lick it, and then rub it all over their body. Why? To get high. The chemical reaction creates an enjoyable psychoactive experience for the animal. However, what researchers have found is that unbeknownst to the lemurs, their little benders are saving their lives. The chemicals in the millipede also acts as a potent insecticide, saving these lemurs from the numerous deadly viruses and bacteria spread through other insect bites. So, the bloodline of the lemurs on this unique African island nation may depend on their drug induced rock star lifestyle. Life, uh, finds a way.  You know what’s scarier than jaguars? Jaguars on Ayahuasca….that’s right. As Scott explains this is actually one of the old tales on how the ancient inhabitants of Peru discovered this spiritual vine. Ethno-zoopharmacognosy! It's a word. It’s when people use animals for medicinal purposes, or as Scott puts it “bugs as drugs”! Sometimes, as you hear here...it doesn't always go as planned. Community Association Matters

Ana: Hello, and welcome to Community Association Matters, the podcast that serves homeowner and condominium associations in Florida. And I say Florida now, because we are serving not just Southeast Florida, but also Southwest Florida with offices in both Miami and Fort Myers. So we're very excited about that opportunity. And as always, our goal here is to educate board members and owners of multifamily and even commercial units about the laws that pertain to being a board member and condominium and homeowner associations. As well as what to do to maintain your building, your common areas and, and make sure that you prevent liability and mitigate any problems that may come up. So being from Florida, being in Florida, we all live with hurricanes. That is a part of life. It's something that we've grown, adapted to if you will. And part of living in a hurricane area is being prepared. Knowing what to do, having a plan in place that will get you through that difficult challenge, and then the aftermath. What do we do afterward? Because everybody talks about hurricane preparation, but not a lot of conversations go on about what actually happens after.  So today I've asked my friends, Francis and Rob to join us there from SunFlo Roofing. They have a lot of different expertise, obviously, roofing is one of them, but they also work with one of the leading public adjusting firms in the State of Florida. And they're going to talk to us a little bit about what happens afterward. So I want to welcome Francis and Rob to the show. How are you guys doing? Francis:  Good.  Rob: Good.  Francis: Good morning. Thanks for having us. Ana: My pleasure. Thank you for being here. So as we start the podcast, I always ask my guests to tell us a little bit about themselves. Tell us a little bit about your company. And I know Francis, you said that nowadays we're all working from home with COVID. Of course, we have on top of that hurricane season starting here. And I know you said Robert is going to be on mute for part of the show because he's got his little one. So he doesn't want to be that newscaster that had his kids walking in. So I'll, I'll give the floor over to you, Francis, and share a little bit about SunFlo. Francis: I locked my door, but you know, we have a dog in the house this week, so at some point, you might hear that, but yes, let’s talk SunFlo. That's short for Sunshine, Florida. Florida is known for its sunshine, but it's also known for its hurricanes. It's really bad weather here in South Florida we don't get as much hail, but it's very common in Central and North Florida. Obviously we also get the summer thundershowers which create a lot of rain. We get a lot of tropical weather. SunFlo itself is a roofing division of a group of, construction and companies specializing in residential, commercial, new construction, rebuilds, remodels, and we have a very robust practice in insurance claims, repairs, and rebuilds. Our company is comprised of four owners. Rob and I are two partners in the ownership group. We have partners in the Panhandle, Central Florida, and South Florida. So we're kind of spread around the state. So each of us has an individual experience. You know, we have a broad knowledge base, licensing, and certifications throughout the State of Florida in an array of construction, remediation, and repair disciplines. We jointly possess licenses. We're state-certified building contractors, state-certified roofers, licensed, we're certified mold assessors, and certified mold remediation. We’re certified in home inspections and building inspections.  So, Sunflo incorporated to bring the roofing portion of all these disciplines, that we were doing in a number of these different companies, together. We've been in roofing, between all of us in the partners since 1997. We've put on probably 4,000 roofs during that time. So roofing repair and replacement is one thing that we have a lot of experience in. And so we're going to focus on today.  A lot of what we do when there is an insurance claim actually brings a lot of these disciplines together because the roof is the first part of the building that comes off. But once it's done, it's the most essential portion or ‘the envelope’ as they call it, then you know you've got damage to the inside. You've got structural damage. You've got a lot of moisture, you've got damage to some contents. So we have experienced in dealing with all that and, and we've done, as I said, over 4,000 roofs, new construction builds, including small unit, you know, 30 unit developments, multimillion-dollar family residences, commercial properties over 20,000 square feet, and multifamily housing. We've done emergency catastrophe response, single-family homes to very large structures. For example, during Hurricane Michael, we remediated about 250 homes, put on about 80 or 90 roofs on those homes in the panhandle. Water, hurricane, fire, mold, trauma scene, viral, bacterial in structures, from single-family homes ranging up to 450,000 square feet.  After Hurricane Irma, we remediated the airport Sheraton, which is next to the golf course there by the airport. You can see it from the 836. So we actually had to go in. We had to completely tear out all it, I think it was 400 plus rooms. It's a 350,000 square foot facility. We did the mold remediation, clean, prepare everything for rebuilding, and so forth.  Between our various companies and disciplines, we have a lot of experience, dealing with insurance, not just for the single-family home, but for large commercial structures, formal type, multi-unit, residential. Insurance claims management for repairs is a portion of the business that we're involved in. That really is probably it's kind of esoteric because it's not so much just the construction side of it and the repair and the understanding all that, it’s dealing with the bureaucracy of insurance companies a little bit. So, one of the things that we offer as part of what we do for our particular clients and it's something we're going to recommend that all your property managers and all your audiences in the business, or if you're a, you know, a property owner of a commercial structure is to get into a basic maintenance plan with a roofing company.  Ana: Let's talk about that and about the public adjusting. We're going to segue into that because we have a public adjusting division in our company. So it's perfect that this is something you guys have experience in. That's something that's important after. Let's talk about the maintenance plan. What do you think is a good plan that HOA’s, multifamily, commercial, or anybody really with a roofing structure can undertake now in preparation for a hurricane.  Francis: OK, so the first thing is obviously, there are some things you'll do in advance and we don't want to wait ‘til the last minute. Then there are some things that obviously are going to be done at the last minute. The more you can get done in advance before a hurricane approaches, the less your management team has to deal with in those few precious hours right before a storm approaches.  So an annual inspection, so regular inspection will identify minor damage that can expand in the larger damage when you have strong winds. Leaking that may not seem like a big deal now, but if you have a major rain event and a major winds all of a sudden you're gonna have major leaking into a structure that can cause a lot more damage and much greater loss in terms of payments to the internal structure and the contents. So basic maintenance, these are some things that you should be doing at all times and, you know, any missing shingles, broken tiles, loose or leaking flashing, any other anomaly in the roofing system should be identified and addressed properly. So, as I mentioned for our customers, and it's something you're going to want to look into, and any property managers in the audience are going to want to discuss with their particular contractors, roofing companies. We have a basic annual plan, a maintenance plan, where we come in and we do an initial inspection and then we renew the inspection every year. But the basic initial primary inspection when we come in is identifying the existing damage that requires needed attention to repair. Establish the structural and accessory details for future reference, so we know that we're dealing with a number of squares and that's the overall size of the roof. What accessories, how many penetrations, the type of penetrations, the slope, what kind of roof is it, what's the surface made out of tile, shingle, metal, whatever.  So we already know what we're dealing with. We can give the property manager a better idea of exactly what his roof is all about. Where is it in service life? And then we also advise them about any elements that require their attention if a storm is approaching. Cause sometimes, for storm prep, you need to know what are the closable vents on these particular buildings? What particular removable, dangerous attachments. Is there any removable things that you guys can do to maybe make sure? Cause that's one thing that we often deal with. Folks will put a satellite dish up on the eve, or some kind of flag pole or something else. So that in a wind event, if that tears off it’ll rip off your eve too, all of a sudden it's rough. So those are the kinds of things that we point out to them. Then obviously we provide general basic repair to reduce costs and, and priority response after the loss. And this is particularly important because we've been to a lot of hurricanes and I'm going to tell you when we roll into the city the first thing everybody wants, but it's the hardest thing to come by is a tarp for your roof. So when we priority mitigate damage and we'll talk a little bit about mitigation, later, but we mitigate the damage immediately. We prioritize our plan. We handle the whole entire process and more importantly, we take all the documentation and we'll talk about that as well, but we go ahead and document all the damage for the insurance claim purposes, in a little bit  Ana: about that. So now, you know, let's say an association or an owner of a multi-family has done everything that they can to get their roof system ready. Hurricane comes in and there's significant damage cause we know that even a category one hurricane can cause significant damage, especially to an older roof system. What is our first step? What should we do right after hurricane? There's damage and we're getting calls about a roof leak. Francis: Okay. So, after a storm or any loss of event really, you know, the fire, a leak. We dealt with a large condominium complex, in Lake Buena Vista last year. It was six towers, all 12 stories each and a heater burst on one of the towers and soak the whole entire tower. And while we were there remediating it a heater burst in the tower next door. So, you know, all these sorts of things happen. It isn't always a hurricane that you prepare for and plan for. When a loss occurs, you should always have the same process in place, no matter what kind of loss it is. The first thing you're going to do is you're going to document, document, document. We help with that. We'll rush right in and we take all the photography, be it interior, be it exterior. We take all the measurements. We take all the materials samples that we need to do all that. If it's an interior, for example, and there are bacteriological issues, so maybe a toilet burst on a fourth-floor or overflows and it, and it is going down the elevator shaft. I mean, we run into things like this. And so, you know, those kinds of things, it's important to be able to sample all the materials, sample everything that you have in the structure, so you know what needs to be remediated.  So documentation is the first and most important thing because that documentation is what's going to support your claim. It's going to make sure, number one, you get coverage and number two, that they pay for everything that they're supposed to pay. Cause remember you’ve been paying all these premiums. Now it's time for you to get what you paid for. The next most important thing is to mitigate any further damage. Pretty much every policy from a small homeowner policy all the way to the largest commercial policies have a mitigation clause and it is the responsibility of the insured that when a loss does happen to mitigate, to stop, any further damage, to take all steps they reasonably can to stop any further damage from happening. This is obviously to maintain the integrity of the structure, but really, more importantly, to protect the insurance company from having a hundred thousand dollars loss turning into a $500,000 loss. When it comes to roofing, that means you have to tarp immediately. And typically after a hurricane that's one of the hardest things to come by. Your insurance policy, most insurance policies, include an emergency response section and an emergency mitigation section. Because they require you to do this, they're also going to pay for it. But the problem isn't always paying for it, the problem is getting somebody to do it. So that's one of the things we guarantee for our clients. It's something you're going to want to discuss with whoever you've got a relationship with as a property manager, business owner, or property owner, in advance. Say, Hey, you know, when a hurricane strikes in South Florida, I want to know I can make a phone call if my roof is blown off, and that you guys are going to be there to take care of it.   Ana: A tarp doesn't always work in all roofing systems. Does it?  Francis: No. Unfortunately, we have run into scenarios where there's other things that you can do. They've got the wraps now. Shrinkwrapping is another thing that is extremely expensive. The insurance company sometimes balk at paying for that under their emergency services clause.  Ana:  Talk a little bit about that. What exactly it is that for those who don't know what it is? Francis: So with the shrinkwrapping, they'll actually come in and they'll put a membrane on your roof that they can then use heat to shrink right onto the surface. It works especially well for tile, and for roofs that are really cut up, for certain situations. It's also exceedingly expensive. A lot of times putting one of those on is especially for a smaller structure. It's going to be half or two-thirds of the cost of a new roof. The advantage of it is, it's a lot more durable. Well, when we've done it, it'll last a couple even several months. Hurricane Michael is an example. Every time we will put on a tarp, a week later we get a cold front blow through. It was in October, I think that the hurricane hit and that was in the panhandle and now you're into November. And so you have cold fronts blowing and it gets really cold in the panhandle of Florida. It's not at all like South Florida, you know, and you've got all this hot. Ana:  We’re different countries. Francis: Yeah. they say the further south you go, the further North you get, they say. Or the further North you go, the further South, you get, if you’re going in that direction, . Every time we get a cold front blow through we get 20, 30, roofs, we have to go to re-tarp. What happens in a catastrophe situation, is most reasonable adjusters understand that. If you've made a reasonable effort to put a tarp on, if your roofers come out and done what they can, that is not going to be a reason that's going to hold up, especially if you get to the third-party arbitration or God forbid court, they're not going to be able to deny you over that. Now, if it's a dereliction. If you've had a leak in your roof for two months and you haven't bothered to tarp, that you've never cared, you let it go to seed, the inside is all wet and everything else, or much worse, which we see sometimes, if you've had a claim, they paid you to repair it and you didn't spend the money to repair it and then you had a subsequent claim, they're going to deny you. And, this is one of those situations where you want to make a good-faith effort. And a lot of times intent is a very important thing in the law. It's the same thing with insurance intent is something that you're always going to want to be shown to have good faith in your dealings with your insurance company. Even though, and we'll discuss that as well, once you get into the claims process, it's a bit of an adversarial process, but, you still want to show a good faith effort to tarp the roof, and so forth. We don't use shrink wrapping very often because most insurance companies want to balk at it, especially for very large structures. So in most cases, you know, we are able to talk with traditional tarping techniques. It's really about how you hold down the tarp. And in most cases as well, unless the roof is completely blown off, which you'll see in our more catastrophic wind events, such as we did Michael, there's no amount of tarping is going to help you get the decking is exposed. If trusses are exposed.  Most leaks are usually confined to specific areas and they can be covered by a 20 by 20, 20 by 30 tarp, with the right tie-downs. So after mitigating damage, which is exceedingly important, the next thing you're going to do is you're going to, hopefully, have your licensed contractor come out and look at it and start putting together a file. You're going to file a claim. The adjuster is going to come out and you're going to want to make sure that your contractor is there to meet with them and is prepared to show them if they're experienced in the claims process, where the specific areas are. What they're looking for. Why there's damage there. You don't want to leave an adjuster to their own devices. And this is something we do for all our clients is every adjuster onsite inspection, we're there. If they send out an engineer after the fact, we're there. So again, this is protecting yourself. These are the things you're doing after the claim happens to protect yourself and make sure that, at every step of the way, you have a hand in the process and are guiding the process towards a favorable outcome of the claim.  And then at this point, also you should start thinking about who's going to be your public adjuster/attorney if it goes in that direction. This always needs to be in the back of your mind, especially if you're dealing with larger claims. If you're dealing with a large, complex, multi-unit complex, you could be looking at a million-dollar roof plus. So the adjuster is going to dot their I's, cross their T's to make sure there isn't something there that they can deny or less than coverage you.  So those are some of the things you can do right after the storm passes, just to make sure that you're protected. Document, make sure that you have a lot of documentation, that the evidence is there, that you can prove it. And that if you have to go in front of an arbitrator or somebody else, that you could present the evidence and they're going to look at it and they're going to say, yeah, there was a loss here, why did you deny this Mr. Insurance company? Second of all, you're going to want to mitigate any further damage. Third of all, you're going to want to have somebody who knows how to look at that damage and preferably have them do the documenting for you, prepare a file, meet with the adjuster, help guide the process. Because again, adjusters are not licensed, construction professionals. They're licensed and trained in how to handle a claim and how to read policy language, and how to interpret policy language. They're not licensed and trained in the construction trades. So you're there to be that professional. Even though it's a little bit of an adversarial process, as your representative, your contractor is able to say, ‘Hey, Nope. This is why this is here. This is why we have to do this way. This is the code for has been this. If we're going to pay for this roof, we have to pay to have all these other things done.’ So, and then, as I said, the last thing is to begin thinking about your public adjuster and attorney options shouldn't get denied, or even if you're not denied at the negotiation stage.  Ana: So one of the things we talked a little bit about this before the recording started, during Wilma and Irma, we were both very active in getting our clients to get an adjuster because we feel that getting an adjuster is the best way to have somebody fight for your rights. A lot of times we, as cams, are not familiar with the intricacies of an insurance policy and that's something that a public adjuster can help in. So we found that associations that hired an adjuster usually received twice as much, if not three times as much, as associations that did not hire an adjuster. And it's something we recommend and that's why we started our own division because, after Irma, some of the issues were that the adjusters were so busy and so overwhelmed because everybody was filing claims, that we kind of lost track of some of the, in other words, they didn't proceed against certain cases because they were so busy and so overwhelmed that they wanted to go after the one that was a for sure claim versus the one that, you know, had minor roof damage. So, let's talk a little bit about that. So now we've done what we can to mitigate. We've hired an adjuster. And we're into that process of working with them and, and trying to get the most that we can for a client. So what are some of the things that associations can keep in mind when they hire an adjuster in which they expect in that process? Francis: So the, so let me make it clear, I don't think any association, any homeowner, anybody should go alone in the claims process. And I tell this even to my personal friends. I don't want this to be an insurance bashing session because I think insurance companies are a very important part of the process, and most insurance adjusters that I've met are conscientious people doing their job. However, let's make something clear. The minute you file a claim, the nature of your relationship with the insurance company has changed. You've gone from being a customer to becoming a liability on their books. So the adjuster is not a customer service person. They're not there to make nicey nice with you and make the whole customer service experience. They're there to make sure that if the insurance company has to pay this, that they're only going to pay for exactly what they have to pay for by the letter of the contract. Okay. So the first thing you're going to do, even before any loss, and this goes back to the whole, what do you do before hurricane season, is, and this is very important, review your policy. Okay. It's very important that when your agent sends your new annual renewal over to you, don't just take it, you don't just file it, and wait till the hurricane strikes to find out what's in it. There's a few things you're going to want to look at and look at the declarations page, these are things that when you hire an adjuster, you talk to an attorney, you talk to anybody, even the insurance companies’ adjust after the fact, you already have knowledge and knowledge, as we always know is power. Know your deductible. The deductible is a very important thing, especially when it comes to catastrophes.  In the State of Florida and most states now, the insurance industry uses what's called a hurricane deductible. So you may think you have as a homeowner, let's say for example, normally you have a thousand dollar deductible, right? But if a hurricane strikes in the state of Florida, if any loss happens during a named catastrophe, during a named storm, you know, declared by, even if you're in Orlando and the named storm happens in Miami, you have wind storm damage during that time, believe it or not, you may be subject to hurricane deductible, which is multiples of your normal deductible. It can be 2%, 5%, even 10% of the overall value of the policy. So your homeowners’ association has a $5 million policy. You could be looking at a $500,000 deductible. Know what that's going to mean in terms of having them to do a special assessment. Good luck going back to your HOA if you're a property manager and saying, ‘Whoops, you guys got a half-million-dollar deductible here. We didn't really think about this and now there's going to be a special assessment.’ How does the board explain that to all the homeowners? You know, these are simple things that you can do right now to protect yourself and your property clients. So that's one thing, definitely know your deductible.  The second thing and this is very important, identify key exclusions. There are exclusions and they're listed in your dec page and those exclusions, believe it or not, sometimes contain a windstorm exclusion, crazy because live in the state of Florida, and as we all know, we deal with windstorms here. We actually had a case recently where a potential client called us out. Hey, we've got a bunch of missing tabs or shingles on a roof. Can you guys come have a look at it? We get out there. It's an adult assisted living facility, nursing home, with, you know, six or seven buildings and several outbuilding and they all had damaged. Shingles blown off everywhere. And for us, we’re looking for very specific things over key areas. It's a certain amount of the roof damage and some other things that I may go into that with some pictures in a little bit, but it's all there. This is a very supportable claim under a standard policy. I look at their dec page, they have a windstorm exclusion. They basically, one of the primary causes of roof damage in the state of Florida, and they excluded it out of their policy. Why? To save a few bucks on the premium. That's why. And a lot of times agents, you know, so it's very important in speaking to your agent. Hey, if you have any questions about your dec page, if you have any questions about your deductible, if you have any questions about your policy, call your agent. That's what they get paid for. They don't just get paid to renew your policy, get you to sign some paperwork, and collect permission. Agents like adjusters are licensed to read policy language and interpret it and explain it to customers. So he is there. She is there. Have her come out, explain to you, explain to your board, what is this policy about? What are these exclusions? Why don't we have this kind of coverage or that coverage? And what's it going to cost us if a wind storm hits, the deductible, questions like that. So, identifying key exclusions is important in the state of Florida. You definitely don't want a windstorm exclusion. You don't want a hail exclusion. You don't want any of those kinds of exclusions that are the bigger perils that we all experience here in Florida.  And then another thing you have to be aware of or beware of, is the right to repair. So insurance companies are starting to do this sometimes and basically what this gives them is the right to choose the contractor. And the reason they want to choose their own contractor versus you choosing yours is for a couple of things. Well, really the main is the same money. I mean, let's just get the bottom of it. So the contractors that work for insurance companies are on a program. They do the roofs at a very reduced cost. Anybody who's in a business, or works for a business, or owns a business, runs a business, knows that nothing in life is free. If they're going to do a job for half of what it normally goes for in the marketplace, where are they going to recapture the money? They're going to recapture the money from the homeowner or from the property? Because at the end of the day, they can't do the job for that much less than still make money. So with these program vendors, what they often do is they'll go out and they'll agree to the company's scope. Scope is what exactly the job entails to get done. And so a lot of times where insurance companies cut corners is not on a cost of the shingle or on the cost of the underlayment or on the cost of, you know, this kind of board or that board. It's on whether they're going to put in the, the same quality of underlayment that you have there before. It's whether they're going to approve to put in all this other stuff that you had there before, or that has to be done in order to do the job correctly. We'll talk a little bit about that in a minute But then the last thing we definitely want to be looking for is note any changes to your policy. This is another one that a lot of folks don't really think about. The state of Florida requires insurance carriers to notify their customer if there are any changes to their policy. So at renewal time, you may get a letter in the mail, and really it's all that the state of Florida statutes requires to send them a letter, but you get letters in the mail all the time. Right? You've got a busy office and I'm talking to a general property manager, probably got a couple of assistants, a couple of people working out on the property, things like that, and a piece of mail comes in, if it's from the carrier, you need to look at it. Even if it looks like it's marketing, you know, either assign or have a responsible person, either in the property management team or on the board, have a look at anything that has to do with policy because they will change the policy and all of a sudden, now you've got this change. They're excluding this. They're changing the terms of that. And the state of Florida requires them to send you a letter, but it doesn't do you any good if you just kind of take that letter and you file it away and then you get your policy renewed and then disaster strikes and all of a sudden you're not covered or you have reduced coverage for it. Ana: That's a very important point. Francis: Hmm. Yeah. Oh, and the reason I make it as, cause we've seen these things before. These are all things from experience. We do a lot of insurance and you'd be surprised how often, you've been paying these premiums all these years, then you have a loss and as I said, the adjuster is not there to say, well, you know, you have a windstorm exclusion now, but we're going to go ahead and take care of you because you know, you're a good customer. You know this is not American Express’ customer service department talking. They're not like, okay, you know what? We'll give you some points. We'll give you some miles. It's going to be good. No, they're going to ‘aha We don't have to pay these million dollars.’ That's what their job is. So that just covers some of the things with regards to that. Ana: Now that we have our policy in place and we know what's covered, talk a little bit about the claims process. Maybe beginning to end, so we have an idea of what to expect.  Francis: So, and Rob's going to be able to jump in here because he has as much or more experience in getting on roofs the last 30 years with these adjusters, 25 years, with these guys. Storm blows through, it's safe for your team to go outside or to go to the property and start documenting, taking photography, have your roofer come out and mitigate, things of that nature? You're going to file a claim and the insurance company's going to provide you with a claim number and they're going to schedule an adjuster to come out. This can sometimes take a couple, several weeks, just even get an adjuster on a regular claim. After a catastrophe environment, it’s a little different because what they'll do is they have teams of field adjusters and these mostly are third-party adjusters, people that work for separate adjusting companies that represent the insurance industry. They may not be internal employees, but this is how they scale up after a storm. When, and I remember after Irma, and Katrina, Harvey out in Houston, all these storms that we've seen over the last 10, 12, 15 years is, there's armies of adjusters that are going out there and just signing paperwork, writing checks, signing paperwork, writing checks. So there’s a little bit of a different environment right after a catastrophe, but the process is basically the same. The adjuster is going to come out. They're going to inspect the damage. They're going to collect information in evidence. They're going to take their own pictures. They're going to do their own thing. This is why it is essential at this stage of the process to make sure that you're prepared for this. If your contractor can be out there, if your professional can be out there, you have a PA and this is when they should be out there as well, in conjunction with your contact and making sure that you have all the information that you need. You're going to go through and you're going to provide all the documentation you need to have. You're help guide the process. Some insurance adjusters are leery. The more experienced ones are going to be like, ‘Hey, no, wait a minute. I know what I'm doing.’ Well, you know what, at the end of the day, yeah, they do know what they're doing, but they're not licensed, construction professionals. So that's why it's important for our customers and our clients, why we're there.  I'm going to show you a perfect example of what we do if that's okay? This is an example of a roof of that we go out there, we meet with the adjuster, everything gets marked up, shows exactly where we've got damage. This has hail damage on this roof. So I want to go ahead and talk a little bit about this particular structure. You're going to see the missing shingles here, on the ridge cap. You're going to see, and Rob, you can jump in here, you know, this as well as anybody, you're going to see some of the hail hits, and you can see where it's been circled. This evidence is all there to prove, you know, ‘Hey, this roof needs coverage.’ This is a 44 building apartment complex that we're doing right now next to Universal Studios. We've gotten it approved for full coverage by the insurance company. Basically, and Rob was the one that managed this process, he was out there with the engineer. I'll let you talk a little bit more about it. Rob. Robb: Sure. So like Francis says, it’s very important that you have a contractor there at all aspects during the claims process, whether it's with the adjuster, engineer. The reason being is because a lot of these insurance adjusters are fresh out of college. They’ve taken a certification and went through an estimating software class, but as a licensed contractor, we're there to actually point out, all the details of a roof, such as flashing and counter flashing. In this particular case, this was the adjuster out here on this complex, and those are his markings. So what I do also as a contractor, just in case this decides to go to litigation or gets denied, I take the pictures and photos of the adjuster's markings so that we have this in the file as well for the simple fact that the field adjuster obviously finds damage on these roofs. And we went on about 15 roofs and what they do is they do a test square, a 10 by 10 test square, and they circle so many hail strikes within that test square. So it's important that I'm there when this happens because I, I can give my knowledge, my expertise, my findings to the adjuster, build a rapport with him, and in this case, I took pictures of his markings, just to have in our file again. So that way, if it was denied we at least showed that the adjuster showed that this claim or this apartment complex had damaged as well. So, it's very important that we are there, not only as a representative of the HOA or, property managers, but to make sure we're documenting everything possible and treating every roof as if it’s a crime scene. Trying to find collateral damage on all the soft metals is crucial to support finding hail damage throughout the roof. And again, taking pictures of the adjusters. we also have an engineer that came out.  They sent an engineer after the adjuster, obviously because it's a large claim, so it's a high dollar claim. And when the engineer came out, we get we go up again to 15 buildings in hundred-degree heat and at that point, I've marked, I took pictures of all his photo, his documentation and helped to identify damage throughout, because it was actually, in this insurance policy, they had a wind exclusion. So when we were able to find that out initially, we went on the roof looking for him because we knew that there was a hailstorm in that area. So what we did was we helped the association file a claim under hail. Now had we made a mistake and try to put it under wind, it would've been denied. So we have to do our research and due diligence upfront to make sure that, you know, we are identifying the damage and making sure it's consistent with the policy. So there's a very important, like Francis said, as far as understanding your policy and making sure you're reviewing it annually. Especially when changes are happening.  Francis: So we, we went back through the weather reports, and we have applications that we use for this, and we identified a specific hail storm. Found hail damage, in order to get around that windstorm exclusion, and went back and just were able to support that before we even filed a claim. We did all our due diligence and prepared a whole entire report by the time that we talked to the adjuster and have it clean filed, we had all our ducks in a row. And that's, that's why we're always encouraging folks not to go it alone. Hire a professional. It's very important if your a property manager, even if you're just a regular homeowner, don't, don't go it alone. Hire somebody who knows what they're doing, whether it be an adjuster, or an attorney, or a contractor like us that has the experience, that has connections with a lot of good adjusters and attorneys. This is not a process that you want to go through by yourself, because it's going to be tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of dollars in some cases after catastrophe, even if you're just a single-family homeowner. So that's the first thing they come out, they're going to do their inspection. They're going to gather their documentation as you saw. They're going to go back to their office. They're going to put all this together. They're going to look very closely, very closely at your policy and the evidence that they have. And, by the way, their investigation will very likely, especially the more money it's worth, include an interview with yourself, or your team, or anybody who was on the property when the thing occurred. Anybody who has knowledge about, they may see some things depending on the type of claim it is that there may have been a preexisting thing here that this wasn't caused so much by a peril, as by a dereliction of maintenance and things of that nature. That's another reason why it is important to maintain your roof because that's something that they're always going to use if they can, poorly maintained structure, to deny your claim. So they're going to go back to their office, they’re going to make a determination of coverage. And this is a very important step in the whole claims process. Are they going to pay for it? I mean, that's the first thing that you and, and your side is trying to get them to give you a positive determination of coverage. If the positive determination of coverage is made. Then the next question is, what is the scope? The scope is what is it going to take to fix this job and leave this structure the way that it was before the loss occurred. And this is really where all the questions come in, at that point. This is, if there's going to be, I don't want to see an argument, but there's going to be a big difference between yourself and your contractor, your adjuster, and the insurance company, it's going to be right here because the insurance company's going to come back, we run into this all the time. They don’t want to approve replacing flash. Well, why aren't you approving replacing flashing? We need to tear out all the old flashing in order to do the job correctly, right? We're going to, we're not going to take you all flashing with a bunch of nails and nail every single in the exact nail hole. So a lot of times what the adjusters do is they start with, this is a negotiation, as I said before, and what is it that any good negotiator does? The first offer they make is always the lowest offer. So they're going to come out with a very stripped down estimate. and then, you know, that's what we have to come in, and that's where people who know what they're doing representing you come in and say, No. You guys aren't putting enough here to get this done the way it should be. Get us the best roof, the very best material, or the very best structure. This is what we have here before, and this is really what it takes to do this job right.  We had a case recently, where older tile roofs don't have decking underneath. They have first strips and basically, when you tear off the top, you have to come back and do re-decking because the codes have changed. Now, you actually need to put plywood down on all the trusses and have a deck underneath. Well, the insurance carrier didn't want to pay for that. They have to because there's a section of most policies called ordinance of code, and that means in order to repair a loss they have to make sure it's something code, which means if there's extra monies required to get the job up to code because it's, it's an older structure, which,  Robb: which that's also another, important, part of the policy. There's a lot of people that we've come across that do not have ordinance of law coverage in their policy. And what that means is if something needs to be brought up to code, it will be at the expense of the, of the insured to have to pay for that. So that's another important thing to make sure that you have ordinance and law coverage in your policy. Francis: And that's a very good point because in this case, it ended up almost doubling the cost of the roof in order to do it up to ordinance of law. Now, this homeowner did have ordinance of law. The adjuster declined it. Declined to pay for it, even though they had approved for the decking on a same exact roof, just a few doors over. So obviously they felt  Ana: What was their reasoning?  Francis: They don't always need one.  Robb: The same company and the same adjuster! Francis: It's the same adjuster, not just the same. So these are the things we run into. They had ordinance of law. And then that's one of those where, they basically hired an attorney and so once they get a law firm, the lawyer, all of a sudden you get it approved. Ana: Right. Francis: You know that's where you need somebody like an adjustment attorney. You need somebody who knows what they're saying. Do you know what an average homeowner on their own wouldn't have even known that their policy actually paid for this? They would have never known that the adjuster had approved the same exact house eight doors down with the exact same kind of roof that had approved it. Yeah, for the same insurance company, the same adjuster. So these are the things where definitely having a professional on your side is going to make all the difference in the world. In this case, tens of thousands of dollars of difference. So, at that point, once they make a determination of coverage, really what it comes down to is what's that coverage going to be worth.  And that's where, again, it is critical to have somebody who is representing you that can help you in that process, make sure that, ‘Hey, this estimate from the insurance, good, it looks good to me.’ And they're going to give me all this money. Right. I'm going to go put this new roof on, or I'm going to rebuild this interior or whatever the case is, but it's not. Ana: So talk to me a little bit about the role of an adjuster. Francis: Okay. So, and again, you know, I like insurance company adjusters. We have good relationships with a lot of them. This is not even about saying that they're out there to get you, but they have a very specific role. The adjuster's role is to determine what, whether coverage is available, and if so, established the insurance companies’ scope to do that job and complete the repairs within the limits of that coverage. Okay. That's their job. Their job is to interpret the policy, look and see what happened at your property, and then make sure that they're only doing as much as the policy allows them to do. Okay. The adjuster represents the insurance company. They don't represent you. They do not represent the insured. They're not there to do the insured’s bidding or to help the insured in any way. Their job is, now it seems like they might be there to help you because they end up signing the check because they have to.  A field adjuster may come out at first. So there's a couple of different kinds of adjusters and this is important to understand. When you have a claim, they're going to send an adjuster out. Especially after a catastrophe, the chances are it's gonna be a field adjuster. This is the person that's going to come out and gather the evidence and walk the property and take photography and prepare the file. But the field adjuster rarely has any authority to make a determination of coverage. They have very little authority to make decisions on the claim. It's a desk adjuster. That's somebody inside of the insurance company. So this desk adjuster may have a bunch of field adjusters for gathering evidence. The desk adjuster is the one that's actually reading the policy. They're an employee of the insurance company while the field adjuster, maybe a third party, outside contractor. The field adjuster, we see this all the time, it comes out and looks around and says, wow, there's a lot of damage here. Wow. This is going to get covered. You're good to go. You know, let me take all this information down and then they go back and two weeks later you get a call from the adjuster says we're denying your plane. So that's also very important to understand. So the adjusters are going to come out and they're going to review the evidence, they're going to make a determination of coverage. That is their job. The adjuster is trained and licensed to interpret policy language. That's the only thing that their license allows them to do. They're not licensed, construction professionals. They don't, they haven't any training in construction trades. As Rob said, we run into a lot of kids, wet behind the ears have been out of college two, three years. You know, they took some insurance courses in college. They come into an insurance company. They start out as a rookie, they get their sit for their license. The insurance company, especially after catastrophe, when they need bodies, throws them out on a, on a roof and all of a sudden, these guys were supposed to know everything about how to build a roof. That's why also a public adjuster who has a lot of experience with somebody who can help you a lot because this person's probably seen and been around. And if they've got more experience than the insurance company's adjuster then your at an advantage, and that's, that's very important, experience and knowledge is power. So they're not trained to build anything. They're not trained on the code. They don't understand the state. They haven't taken a license. They haven't sat for all the tests to for the state of Florida building code. So that is an important thing to understand. Just because they deny your claim, if the damages there, if your licensed contractor says, ‘Hey, look, we do insurance roofs. We know that there's this many hail strikes. We know that there's this many missing tiles of broken tiles. We're lifting the tiles up. There's this many square feet, there's this many to go up two inches. You've got this many loose. It meets the criteria, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.’ Now, no, you've got that claim. Even if they deny you, pursue your next step, which is going to be, you know, having representation on your side, possibly even getting a lawyer. So, but the adjuster's role and this is very important is to represent the insurance company, to decide if and whether you've got coverage for this claim, they're not there to represent you or to do you any favors. So that's none of their role. And a lot of times people forget that. You want to see the insurance adjuster come out right after a hurricane, cause he's hopefully gonna sign you a check, but you have to be understanding that this is an adversarial process when it gets to the claims, to the level of the thing. Ana: Is there anything that the association, the manager, or a multi-family real estate investor can do, throughout this process to help in this process to make it successful, make it a successful claim.  Francis: Absolutely. First of all, be nice to your adjuster. You know, Rob mentioned before getting all of these roots and building a relationship. We actually deal with a lot of the same adjusters in some of the markets over and over and over, because usually, it's a handful of guys that work for a particular large insurer. You're going to run into them. You want to be nice to those guys. You want them to understand you're there to just do your job. You're just there to protect, just as they're there to do their job. Don't ever lie, if you’re being investigated. You know, they're doing an interrogation, I call it interrogation and that’s what it feels like, they're interviewing you about the loss. Be honest. Those kinds of things, but, the most important thing you can do is to have your documentation for your claim. And I've mentioned this before. Rob used a term of crime scene and that's actually a funny term that we use internally. We don't really always talk about that with clients, but we treat it like a crime scene, for us, it's like CSI. When Rob gets on a roof and, you saw the pictures earlier, and kind of presents the adjuster, ‘Hey man, I just want to take it.’ He's already been up there a bunch of times. So that's why he's there for the meeting. He knows exactly where to lead this guy. Okay. ‘See what we have over here. I know you're going to do this many squares, that you're going to look at this whole area right here. At least this roof needs,’ they end up walking 15 buildings of a 41, 44 building complex. They’re prepared to approve the whole thing. So documentation is everything. And that's why we, for our clients who I always recommended, to let us do the documentation. We're going to come out and we're going to fix that roof anyway. So let us take the pictures. Let's prepare the file. Let us deal with the adjuster and managing that process, but it is important certainly that you have a good relationship with the adjuster and that you provide everything that they request from you, as quickly as possible. The second thing is, if you can, if you're working with an experienced contractor or public adjuster, they're going to be able to help you prepare an estimate using Xactimate. And the reason you want to do that is, so I mentioned scope before, the insurance companies are going to put together an estimate that's going to be based upon what they think they need to do all the materials and labor and equipment that is going to be needed to put your roof together. They’re going to prepare that in software called Xactimate. So let's clarify something here, and this is something that's a misconception for a lot of people. We never negotiate the price of a roof. Nobody negotiates the price of the roof.  Adjusters don't negotiate the price of a roof with anybody. What they negotiate is the scope. The pricing of every single line item is preset. The insurance industry uses a pricing schedule that has all the pricing for every single element of a structure in it, all the labor items, all the equipment, and tool items. That's all preset, depending upon which market you're in, what the market conditions are, even down to the zip code. So when we sit there and we negotiate with an adjuster, we're not talking with them about, it's a matter of fact unless you're licensed that adjuster, you're not really allowed, in the state of Florida to negotiate pricing, but we don't negotiate. And we don't tell the adjuster, well, instead of this and this first shingle paint this much, you're going to pay this much. No, we accept all their prices. So the problem is they say, well, we're only gonna, put in this many shingles. No, all this area has damage, you need to put in this many more shingles to do the job. So that ends up changing the bottom-line cost to the job. But the pricing is always set. The insurance companies have it in a program called Xactimate. We use Xactimate as well. If you're going to hire a public adjuster make sure that they either have access to a contractor like us that can do it for them and working for you and that they understand Xactimate and that they understand the process. Right. So that's important, that you have an understanding of what the scope should be. Don't accept the insurance company’s scope or estimate. For example, if your car, if you had a car accident, you got a really nice BMW and you know, or it caught on fire, God forbid, and you're gonna want those leather seats back. And if the insurance company is going to come back to you with fabric seats or plastic seats or what, you know that's unacceptable,  Robb: Or even, even aftermarket. That's what they will tend to do. And the construction side of things to come with an off-brand or something like that, or poor quality. Francis: They'll cut corners on quality of the materials or cut corners on the quantity of the materials. They'll cut corners on materials in general. I mentioned flashing before. Rob, I know you've run into a few of those here in the last few weeks. Why don’t you speak a little bit about some of those items that you fought for and gotten on some of the clients here in Orlando? Robb: Sure. So just to give you an example after you’ve stripped down a roof to the decking, the most important part of that roof is the underlayment and the flashing. So what insurance companies tend to do is pay for a lot of those, light items, but they always don't want to put flashing in there or counter flashing, which that's the first area that's gonna leak after installing a new roof. Cause when you're tearing off a roof, you have L flashing, that may be damaged from tearing off a roof. A little pinhole can cause a leak in the L flashing. So what we typically do is we will, on our estimates, point out all the areas where there's L flashing, counter flashing to make sure that they cover that part of the roofing system that is crucial. I can't tell you how many times, and again, not to knock on these adjusters, they just don't understand the construction of a roofing system. So sometimes it's just that they don't know. On average, most insurance estimates are short paid up to 35%. And, on the scope of work or when they actually write a letter on what the estimate says that you reserve the right to supplement. And that's where we come in as the experts to make sure that they're making the insurance hold and that they're getting paid for like-kind material of the material that's currently on there. Francis: So having your own scope that is your professional coming in and determining what is there, and what's really going to need to be done to put that roof back together, make sure it never leaks again, make sure that it's as good as, or better than it was before. Really is good,  cause that's what the insurance company's on the hook for. That's critical. That's very critical. You know, Rob just talked about some examples where they may leave off a few things that may seem minor That somebody who's not versed in construction practices may not realize, and that critical little area of L flashing, that's where all of a sudden you've got a leak that can lead to something a lot bigger later. The next thing you definitely want to do is communicate, communicate, communicate with your public adjuster, and your contractor. You're going to be getting a lot of stuff, especially the bigger the claim, in terms of, communication, mail, phone calls from your adjuster, from your insurance carrier. Make sure that they're in the loop on all of that. Especially when it comes to any meetings with engineers or adjusters. These people are representing you, they're there for you. If you've got an important court case ahead of you and you get a summons in the mail, you think you should mention it to your attorney? Yeah, probably. So same thing here. You know, because they're there to protect you and to make sure that at the end of the day, you get a positive outcome for your claim and that you get all the money and all the scope that you need to do that job right.  And then the final thing, and I hate to say this, but be prepared to fight for what you paid for. The moment you file a claim, I mentioned it before, you go from being a customer to being a liability. Be prepared to fight for all those premiums you paid for all those years. Okay. Your adjuster, your contractor they're on your side, help them help you. Be prepared if it takes litigation. If it takes going the extra mile to provide documentation to your adjuster, whatever they asked me for, make it happen. Cause at the end of the day, even though we're going to make nicey nice with these adjusters and we're going to do everything we can, you. It's an adversarial process. They're looking for every loophole. If they can deny the claim, they will.  Ana: And I agree with your assessment. I think that my experience has always been that they are very nice, but they do try to find a way to get out of paying what they have to pay. And they're always going to come in with a lower estimate, or maybe try to work on reducing the scope somehow,  whatever the case may be. But having an adjuster and having professionals, such as yourself, certainly is going to help maximize the most that they can receive out of that claim.  Francis:  And understand, we work very well with public adjusters. We were there to support them when they're on a case. We're there to help them put the estimate together, to help them get as much money for their customers. What they're trying to do at the end of you mentioned before you get two to three times, because that initial estimate for the insurance company leaves of a lot out. And that's why you want folks that know what you're really supposed to get it and to help you fight for it. Robb: And to touch a little bit on that, when the apartment complex in 43 buildings, just so you know, they approved this right off the bat. Didn't have to go to attorneys. I built a great rapport with them. In fact, they are currently putting the estimate together and they're going to send it to me to review it before they send it for payment. So that's the type of relationship that we look to have with the engineers, the adjuster, certainly the insurance adjusters that we meet on-site. And establish that really good rapport. It means having the knowledge, and being able to identify damage and, talk, kind of say, like their language. And so they understand, goes a long way. So that's a great client for us now. And now they know we're looking out and we’ll inspect some other of their apartment complexes and facilities.   Ana: And the fact that you work in the panhandle means that you basically go anywhere in Florida, right? Robb: Yes. So Orlando, Tampa, Panhandle, Miami.   Ana: Okay. Well, thank you guys so much for joining us today. Welcome to this Beer with Nat mini-series! Instead of chatting with women who work in the beer industry, like I normally do… in this mini-series, I’m chatting with women who don’t. Why? To show that it’s not just women who work in beer that love it. Today’s guest is journalist and broadcaster, Marverine Cole. Marverine tells us what inspired her to pursue a career in journalism, talks us through the various roles she’s held to date, and lets us in her new day-to-day, as head of the undergraduate journalism program at Birmingham City University. In addition to her work as a journalist and broadcaster, Marverine is also a Beer Sommelier! We chat about what got her into beer, what led her to pursue the Beer Sommelier qualification, and she shares an exciting new opportunity that’s just come her way that combines her passion for beer with her career in journalism. Coincidentally, Marverine and I ended up drinking the same beer! A modern British classic, Thornbridge Jaipur. You’ll hear why she loves it so much shortly. (Just a quick heads up, this episode was recorded remotely, so the audio quality is not quite the same as previous seasons, but I hope you still enjoy it.) This week's Alpha Trader podcast features a return appearance by J.C. Parets of All Star Charts. Following Parets is a special report on Simon Property Group (SPG), with Seeking Alpha's Daniel Shvartsman talking with Julian Lin of the Best of Breed Marketplace service. Parets tells hosts Aaron Task and Stephen Alpher that the recent action in stocks is looking like a classic bear market bounce. Why? To name a few reasons: The list of stocks, sectors, and global indices making 52-week lows continues to grow, breadth expansion continues to the downside, and the leading sectors of the bounce were defensive ones like utilities and consumer staples. In a new bull market, we'd instead be seeing sectors like tech, communications, industrials, consumer discretionary, and financials leading the way. Then there's the bond market, and with it continuing to make all-time highs (yields hitting all-time lows), Parets just isn't buying the bull market argument. One other indicator: Parets wants to be a buyer when 15% of stocks are trading above their 200-day moving average. Right now, we're at 6% and headed lower (this was recorded prior to Monday's 7% gain for the averages). Next up, Julian Lin sits down with Daniel Shvartsman to discuss his outlook for the roughed-up mall sector.

How Jesus’ presence can change our perspective on COVID19 Luke 5:1-16 Intro We are making history right now. COVID 19 is changing how the world operates: economically, socially, and perhaps most importantly, it is changing how people think. People are afraid because science doesn’t have answers for this virus. I admit, it is startling to me, especially since I have a new baby on the way and a wife who is categorically immune-compromised. But how should Christians respond in times like these? How have Christians responded in similar situations in history? Historically, when the world fled from cities infected with plagues of even greater magnitude, many Christians stayed. Why? To serve the dying and preach the Gospel to them. Jesus said, would save his life will lose it, but whoever would lose his life for my sake and the Gospel will find it. Christians throughout time, armed with promises like these from our Lord have put themselves at risk for the sake of others’ present and eternal destiny. Martin Luther, in 1527, when the severe bubonic plague hit Wittenberg, refused to flee the city, though many called him to. His actions cost his daughter Elizabeth her life. Despite the tragedy, Luther wrote a tract entitled, “Whether Christians Should Flee the Plague,” where he called Christians to die at their posts. It wasn’t time to neglect duties of serving the sick or pastoring congregations; it was time to take up the cross of Christ to serve the needy.[1] This may seem foolish to some and admirable to others. To be clear, in making this point, I’m not advocating for foolish actions that could lead to spreading COVID 19. We are clearly taking careful measures to prevent that. Rather, I simply want to ask why is it that Christians respond so differently from the world? I believe our text today from Luke has an important lesson for us. In the retelling of the call of the first disciples, we’ll see that Jesus’s presence reorients perspective on reality. This is what I want to focus on today for the next several minutes: Jesus’s presence reorients our perspective on reality, but not just in how we think about COVID 19, but all of our problems. Let’s dive in to verse 1 and point 1 1-7 God’s solution for the broken world is his presence On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Jesus’s ministry was in full swing. He was traveling from town to town preaching and healing, and we are told that reports about Jesus were spreading, so crowds were coming to him in droves. The people were hungry for the hope and healing they had heard about. There wasn’t a pandemic in Israel at the time, but the presence of the oppressive Roman power, sickness, demon oppression, and all other effects of sin drove people to Jesus like some of you were driven to the stores for toilet paper and sanitizer wipes this week. What was Jesus’s solution to their problems? Verse 3: 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. Jesus comes near to teach the people. Notice that phrase “word of God” in verse 1. They came to hear the Word of God. God knows humanity’s need, and he came near to hungry people and taught us about himself because “man does not live on bread alone but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” Yes, Jesus healed and cast out demons, but Jesus makes clear in 4:33 that his primary purpose is to preach the good news of the kingdom. One of the reasons we are gathering here today in the midst of this panic is that you and me need the Word of God. This is God’s solution for the broken world. Himself. His Word. When God speaks through his Scripture, through preaching, through others, through images like baptism and the Lord’s supper, God is manifesting his presence in the time of our need. Verse 4. 4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” Jesus – not a fisherman – tells the experienced fishermen to fish at a time they knew was bad for fishing. Simon Peter, maybe a little frustrated, reminded Jesus that they had fished all night and caught nothing. Life is hard and sometimes very hard. We don’t know the effects a bust work day had on Simon and his partners. It’s not unlikely that a week or two of bad fishing would have felt similar to a major drop in the stock market, work being cancelled, etc. Nonetheless, the power that Peter had seen or at least heard about in Jesus life made him follow with these words “But at your word I will let down the nets”. Let’s continue with verse 6: 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. In an act of divine omniscience, Jesus fixed all of Peter’s problems… so it would seem. All God had to do was come near through his incarnate Son Jesus and everything got better. The sick were healed, the dead were raised, and even financial problems were overcome. God’s presence in the world literally changes everything. But this should cause you to be asking an important question: if God can just fix every broken thing by coming near like this, why isn’t he doing it? Why isn’t he just coming and ending COVID 19 and all the world’s problems? Let’s look at the point 2 for our answer. 8-10 Jesus’ presence reorients us to the reality of our sin problem 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” Peter didn’t jump up and down because he just hit big, but fell to his knees in repentance and fear. In the face of Jesus Christ, Peter’s problems in life got really little and his problem of sin got really big. Peter realized who he was standing before. Jesus was not just any man. He had put on display his divine power, which meant that Peter was standing in the presence of God.[2]This was a Theophany. God was made manifest before Peter’s eyes. If we trace the Scriptures, every biblical figure who encountered God’s presence became keenly aware of their unworthiness before God with the reaction of fear. From the time that sin entered the world through Adam, man could no longer be in the presence of God without divine provision. Either a sacrifice of blood had to be made or that person would die if they came near. The problem with humanity is that we are unclean and cannot be in the presence of the God of life. Even more, though he is our need, we are actually blind to our need for him and refuse to come to him for cleansing and healing. So we practice every self-help tactic to get better or more successful, we take all the right supplements and apply all the right age serums to stay young and healthy, but still we die because we don’t have God, because we choose things that are not God to be god for us! But Peter is finally seeing clearly. Jesus’ presence has reoriented him to reality. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. Somehow, though Peter is sinful and is right to be afraid, Jesus says, ‘do not be afraid.’ If we understand sin rightly like Peter did that day, Jesus’s response should catch all of us by surprise. Instead of Jesus expelling Peter from his presence, he invites him to join him in his mission of rescuing other sinners! How can Christ tolerate and even welcome Peter into his mission alongside him? Wouldn’t that taint Jesus’s holiness and mission? Let me point you to verse 13 for our answer. 13 And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him. It’s probable that this account of the cleansing of the leper was placed next to Luke 5:1–11 due to the similarity between Peter’s response and the leper’s.[3]Both fell at the feet of Jesus, and both called him “Lord”. In the Old Covenant Law it wasn’t sinful to be leprous. However, someone’s uncleanness like leprosy was a powerful picture of the sinfulness in the world and in each of us. So the leper understood his need for cleansing and was desperate for it even like Peter. There was perhaps nothing more important to this man in this moment than to become clean so that he could have his life back. Jesus’s presence reorients us to reality by showing us what are greatest problem is. Friends, COVID 19 is not it, not money problems, kid problems, or any other problem. The problem is that we have made God small in our lives by replacing him with these things. We’ve made idols in place of the truly great God. As a result death enters in. It’s because sin is in the world that viruses like COVID exist, that death itself exists. Jesus’s presence reminds us that our world needs cleansing from sin. We should all be mourning over our sin and the sin of the world today far more than we mourn over COVID 19. What is Jesus’s solution? Jesus touched the leper. When Jesus touched this leprous man, he took his uncleanness on himself. He was identifying with his uncleanness. But not only that, he was offering his cleanness to the leper. Our sin for his righteousness. This is the Good News of the Kingdom. This exchange is exactly what Jesus accomplished on the cross. He would be shamed by culture and cut off from society and all usefulness to it so that you and me could be redeemed for his purposes, fruitful to God and others. Let me show you how I’m making this connection. In verse 14 Jesus told the healed man to go directly to the priest and make an offering according to the Law of Moses. Leviticus 14 lays out those instructions. The leper would have gone later that day and offered a lamb and a turtledove in his place. The priest would have then sprinkled him with the blood of those animals then he would be set free. Don’t you see? All of this was pointing to the day when Christ would be slaughtered as the true and better Lamb of God for our sins on the cross. His blood is what sprinkles sinners clean, what makes us whole from head to toe, and sets us free to serve. The cleansing of the leper is an illustration of God cleansing and commissioning unclean, unworthy sinners like Peter, even like us for his service. God’s solution to the greatest problem on earth was his coming to earth to suffer in our place for our sin and rise from death in order to redeem body and soul for his purposes. And if the greatest problem on earth was done away with, than we can take Jesus’s words, “Fear Not” to heart. Not even death can separate us from the love of God! Look at verse 10 again with me for the final point. 10b-11 – Jesus commissions us to bring his presence to the lost world And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. Just like they had made a profession of catching fish, in following Jesus they would make their lives about “catching” men. Verse 11 tells us that these first disciplesleft everything and followed him. This call to catch men was not just for Peter but for the other disciples AND for every disciple of Jesus. And catch men they did… Peter would go on to preach the Gospel until he was crucified upside down by Roman officials. He and the rest of the 12 walked into death’s valley’s in order to fish for men because sin had been overcome. They didn’t have to fear anything or anyone. When Jesus commissioned his disciples he reminded them (even us) that he would be with us always even to the end of the age. This is a reminder that we have become the temple of God. Indwelt by his Spirit, his presence, it is now our task to take the Gospel of Jesus to the lost world. In this way, the presence of God is manifest to everyone we come near and offer the hope of the Gospel. This is how and why Christians stay put in the face of trials. This is why we react like we do. Because God has promised those who trust him eternal life in resurrection bodies on a new heaven and new earth where there is no death, pain, financial distress, or any other curse. Application: The big question for us today in the face of all the world’s fear, is this: Is your view of reality built on the greatness of Jesus who came to deal with the world’s greatest problem? In other words, if Jesus is small and our sin is small in our eyes than we will fear like everyone else and our hope will simply be that the virus stops wrecking our lives so we can go on with it. But if Jesus is big and our sin is big then we will have reason to cling to him for forgiveness of sins and a renewal of all things through his Kingdom advancing in the world. And if Jesus has taken our sin away than we have every reason to have great hope and serve in this time. Oh that God would restore a reverence and awe at who we worship so that we might see the world and our problems clearly. Secondly, what are you fishing for? Jesus calls you to leave all and follow him and be near him today in the greatest rescue mission ever made. Are your unbelieving co-workers, family members, the lost what drives your prayers and energy, or has your little kingdom, your safety, your needs, your desires taken the central place in your life? Times like these remind everyone how transient and short life is, so now is perfect time to offer the hope of the Gospel to the lost world. It should also remind us that the times are urgent. People are dying without Christ and we have the world’s solution. Let’s repent of how much time we are wasting on meaningless things as a church and begin to give our lives to the cause of Christ. We must repent of our fear, our lack of faith, and put our trust in the God who comes near us and identifies with us in our suffering. Self-Gratification, Self-Glorification, and Greed God’s creation is a gift that we abuse. Where Adam failed, Jesus won.Welcome to the Light of Christ weekly podcast. Light of Christ Anglican Church is located in Georgetown, Texas at MLK and University Avenue. We are a modern expression of the ancient faith. You can learn more about us at lightofchristgeorgetown.org. Today, we will hear a selection from Sunday's sermon based on Romans 5:19, "For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous."Imagine yourself as a child. Maybe middle school. It's Christmas day. There's a gift under the tree. You open up that gift and it is a beautiful new bat. It's like the best that money can buy. You take that gift and that very day you go over to your neighbor's house, break in using the bat through the window, beat your neighbor and take his candy and eat it. That's sin. Is the bat bad? No, the bat is a good gift given to you. Sin is the misuse of God's good gifts. Sin is the misuse of God's good gifts. We see in Genesis that God created everything good, and he puts Adam and Eve in the garden to work it, to steward it, to receive that gift. But what do they do? They take that good gift and they misuse it. That is sin. Sin is the misuse of God's good gift. What is the baseball bat made for? Baseball, right? It's made to hit a home run, hit a base hit, or put a bunt down. It's not meant to beat your neighbor. What have we done? Adam shows really what all of us have done. “Because through one man's disobedience, we were all made sinners.” How do we take God's good gift and sin? Well, first we use God's good gift for self-gratification. For self-gratification. We were meant to be gratified. God made that in us, but we were meant to be gratified in using our bodies and the good gifts he's given us to love our neighbor. What is love? To seek the good of the other for their own sake. Love is to seek the good of the other for their own sake. Why did God make this world? Why did he make you?Why has he given you everything you have, including your body? So that you can seek the good of the other for their own sake. The reason he's given you the baseball bat is to play baseball. The reason he's given you a body and given you everything you have is to love others. But what have we done? Instead, we use that for self-gratification, right? Like the child who beats his neighbor and takes his candy, we use our bodies to not love other people, but to use other people and manipulate other people to get what we want for self-gratification. Not gratification because we've loved, but gratification at others' expense. Self-gratification. Adam sees sees that the fruit is good. He wants to be self-gratified apart from God's plan for him, which is to love. How do we abuse God's good gift of creation? Self-gratification and self-glorification. What does the serpent say to Adam and Eve? “If you take this fruit, you will be like God.” You know what's really interesting about that? What did God make us to be like? God. God made us to be like God. God made us to be glorified. But how? Adam and Eve were placed in the garden to learn how to love one another. That's why there was Adam and Eve, so they could learn to love one another and have kids and learn how to love. This is why God made us, so we could be glorified. We could become like God because God is love. But instead we chose self-glorification. “I'm not going to be glorified by God because I love my neighbor! No, I am going to seek glory for myself on my own terms.” If you were a kid, you ever play king of the hill wherever there was a dirt hill? You would try to be the one on top. You would try to be the glorious one on top. How did you get there? You push everyone else down. That's right. You give them a good kick in the face to stay on top. This is what we do, isn't it? We don't seek glorification by laying our lives down, by loving. We seek glorification by stepping on other people and pushing them down. Self-gratification. Self-glorification. What's the last way that we abuse God's good creation? Greed. Greed. They took it and they ate. Mine. Mine. This idea that it's mine, I can do whatever I want with it. I'm going to accumulate, accumulate, accumulate.“It is mine.” Is it yours? When Adam and Eve are put in the garden, they were placed there as managers, stewards. It's as if God has an investment account and he's placed you as the investment manager, or he has a small business and he's placed you as a manager over it. Can an investment manager ever say, "These investments are mine?" No, he's doing it for someone else. It's by God's grace that he's allowed us in on his work. We're part of it, but what have we done? We have stolen from him. We've said, "No, it's not yours, God, it is mine. I don't have to use everything you've given me to love. My body is mine and everything I have is mine. I can use it for myself. I don't have to use it to seek the good of the others for their sake. It is mine." It is greed. We've been made managers, but we try to take ownership. Here's a time for a little self-diagnosis. How are you seeking the good of others for their own sake with your possessions, with your time, with your talent, with yourself? I think if we're being honest with ourselves more often than not we are seeking our own self-gratification, our own self-glorification and greed at the expense of others. I am a sinner. I need a Savior to heal this heart that's all tangled up inside. We need a better father than Adam. A better example to follow. I am a sinner, but He is righteous. Here in this painting is Jesus in the desert place. He's the second Adam, and he's placed by God... Remember, the Spirit takes him into the desert. He's placed by God not in a garden, but in the desert. The desert that we have made because of our sin.The desert represents the consequences of our sin. It is the God forsaken place. God himself, God the Son goes into the god-forsaken place. Why? To undo what Adam did. Like the tangled string, he's going to undo what Adam did. How does he do that? Well, the tempter comes. What does he tempt Jesus with?Jesus is on a very clear mission. Jesus' mission is to undo what Adam did. His mission is to love, to use his body and everything that he has, all of his power to seek the good of the other for their own sake. The way he specifically going to do that because he's the savior, and this is what's unique to Jesus, is he's going to do that by going to the cross, dying and rising again. He knows that that's his mission, and what Satan is trying to do is the same thing he tried to do with the first Adam. He's trying to get this man off of God's mission to love. How does he do that? He tempts him with the very same temptations. Self-gratification. Jesus is there hungry, fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, and Satan comes to him and says, "Hey, you've got the power to do it." We know that, right? Because later what does Jesus do? He does make bread. "You got the power to do it. You're hungry. Turn these rocks into bread. Gratify yourself. Step out of God's plan to love others with your power and use your power to gratify yourself." Jesus says no. Then Satan moves to self-glorification. Hey, will you seek glorification apart from the cross? Look, Satan is actually advanced in his techniques here. What did Satan do? He quotes scripture. Just a little side note, you can quote scripture to hide your lust. You can quote scripture to maintain your life of self-gratification, self-glorification, and greed. It's something to remember. Satan says, “Look the scriptures say, ‘If you jump down off of this temple, that God has you completely protected.’" What does Jesus say? "No. You're missing the heart of it. I'm protected as I am walking in God's plan for me. Do not put the Lord your God to the test. I will not seek glorification for myself. My glorification will come as I love others, and it will come from my father." Finally, greed. This is where Satan is his most honest I guess you could say. He shows him all the kingdoms of the world. He says, "I will give you all of this. Everything. You can have it if you fall down and worship me." I think Satan's getting desperate at this point because it's so obvious. Jesus says, "Get away from me. We only worship the Lord God." What Adam failed to do and sinned, Jesus did and was righteous. Where Adam failed, Jesus won. He was always seeking the good of the other, always using his power for love, even to this cross where he poured out his entire life for you. I am a sinner. He is righteous.Thank you for listening to the Light of Christ weekly podcast. Let us end our time together with a prayer from the Book of Common Prayer. You can find the Collect for the First Sunday in Lent on page 605. Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations, and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Catharine Arnston is the founder and CEO of a company called Energybits which produces some of the world's best Spirulina and Chlorella products.   Catharine has a 30-year career as an international Attache for the Canadian and British Governments, publisher of an international magazine and founder of three startups. But in 2009 when her younger sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and advised by her oncologist to change her diet to an alkaline one because it would help her heal, Catharine put her career on hold to help her sister. In the process, she discovered algae, the most alkaline, nutrient-dense plant in the world that no one seemed to know about. Catharine knew algage would be a game-changer for the world if she could just help people understand it and so she founded her company Energybits.   Algae s a multi-billion dollar crop in Asia where it has been used for decades. Algae is endorsed by NASA and the UN as the most nutritionally dense food in the world. There are over 100,000 studies documenting its benefits, some of which include increased energy, improved focus, strengthened immune system, reduced inflammation, removal of toxins, enhanced longevity, improved sports performance, removal of hunger and revitalized skin and hair health. All this from a 4 billion-year-old, single-cell organism that has forty vitamins and minerals, the highest concentration f prten n the world, ne calres and one ingredient. The only thing wrong with algae is that it is virtually unknown outside of Asia.    This podcast interview is set to help change that in our corner of the world By the end of this interview you will be rushing out to get yours.   Workout Fuel Give your body the protein and micro-nutrients it needs to perform without sugar or artificial sweeteners. Think of Bits as your daily greens insurance! plate No More Hangry Spirulina is a cultivated algae that has been consumed for thousands of years by the indigenous peoples in Mexico and Africa. It has the highest concentration of protein on earth - triple that of steak - as well as the second-highest concentration of an Essential Fatty Acid called GLA (second only to mother's milk). Spirulina is loaded with antioxidants and unique phytonutrients like phycocyanin and SOD. Chlorella algae are harvested in freshwater tanks and have been used for over fifty years in Asia. It has a remarkable ability to help remove toxins and help build the immune system. All naturally. Chlorella contains over 40 nutrients, including all the B vitamins, iron, zinc, and many minerals. It offers so many benefits we would never have enough room here to list them all. "When it comes to nutrient density for omnivores, vegans, vegetarians and anyone looking to optimize their diet with dense quantities of protein, amino acids, fatty acids, DHA, antioxidants and more, you simply cannot beat chlorella and spirulina. But not all algae is created equal, which is why I swear by ENERGYbits® as my go-to algae source, bar none." LAND Algae produces 100x more protein than cattle and creates zero waste. This efficient nutrition protects our land. AIR Algae provides over 80% of earth's oxygen and even removes CO2. Thanks to algae, we breath deeper and better. Ohmmm. WATER Water is a precious resource. Algae farming uses 20% less fresh water than  WORRY-FREE SOURCING SAFE. Energy bits grow their algae outdoors in carefully monitored fresh water tanks fed by triple-filtered spring mountain water. You can't find a water source or algae that is purer or cleaner. PURE. Energy bits use sound vibrations to crack our chlorella, passing the chlorella through a sound chamber. Most chlorella companies use an older technique to crack the chlorella. They tumble it with glass beads that leak lead into the chlorella.   If you live in the USA or Canada use the code Lisa at checkout for a 20% discount at www.energybits.com. I have a wonderful guest, uh, who you're about to hear from Catherine Ernston of www.Energybits.com. Now, Catherine is the CEO and founder of a company that deals with spirulina and chlorella. Speaker 2: (01:18) Doesn't sound very interesting, but I can assure you this interview will have your mind blown as to how beneficial spirulina and chlorella are for your health. Um, and we will do a really deep dive. There's um, did you know that spirulina has 64% protein, that it has over 40 vitamins and minerals, that it is backed by the United Nations and by NASA they use it for astronauts in outer space. It is an eco-friendly crop. It's got over 100,000 studies done on it, showing the different benefits of these, uh, blue green algae. Um, and the founder, Katherine Amston, got into this through her sister having breast cancer. And through that she decided she wanted to help her sister and started to look at the plant based diet. She started to look at what alkalizing diets were all about and she stumbled across Algie and found out just how powerful it is. Speaker 2: (02:21) And so for the past decade, Katherine has been on a mission to let them world know just how important the nutrients I'm involved with a spirulina and chlorella. So it's a really, really interesting conversation. Make sure you stay to the end. Right. I just want to remind you too, I have my book, we'll link this coming out and just a couple of weeks time from the time of this podcast. It's the story of bringing my mum back after a major aneurism and left her with massive brain damage and hardly any higher function left. And we were told that she would never do anything again and that she wouldn't be with us long at stage. My mum had no ability to speak to communicate. She had no memory. She had no ability to control any bodily function, so the lights were on and no one was home. And this is a book about the desperate search for answers and looking outside the box and everything, the protocols, the therapies, the doctors, the research that I did, uh, and the work that I've done with her over the past four years to now have it back to full health again. Speaker 2: (03:25) So it's really heartwarming and amazing book. I've spent two years in writing this book and I really hope it's going to help thousands and thousands, if not millions of people. If I had my way, there's so many people suffering out there from brain injuries who need to know. Um, and this is not just for strokes or aneurysms, but across the board, all different types of brain dysfunction, whether it be Alzheimer's, dementia, strokes, uh, concussions, uh, aneurisms, all of these things. Um, this is a real good book if you facing any of those things, but also for anyone who wants to know about mindset and mental toughness and overcoming massive challenges when the odds are stacked against you, um, and who hasn't faced situations like that. If you're a human, you sort of get check these things at life. So I'd really love you to go over and check that book out. Speaker 2: (04:15) It's on my website now available for preorder at www.lisatamati.com hit the shop button and that will take you through to my shop with my books and my jewelry collection. So make sure you check that out. If you do that now you would also get access to mindset you, which is my online mental toughness and emotional resilience course, uh, that's valued at $275. You'll get that for free if you order the book before it launches on the 11th of March, but only up until then. Okay. So make sure you go and do that now. Um, and I really appreciate that right guys over to Catherine Amston Speaker 3: (04:53) well, hi everybody. Welcome to the show. Once again, it's wonderful to have your loyalty back with us for another exciting episode of pushing the limits. Today, I have the amazing Kathryn Anson with me. How are you doing Catherine? I am a well and wildly excited for being here. Now, Katherine has been traveling for the last couple of weeks, then conferences, so and so have I. So we're both sitting here very tired but very passionate about what we do. So Catherine is in Canada, sorry. She is a Canadian but she's living in Boston. Um, and she is the founder and CEO of a company called ENERGYbits, uh, which, uh, is a company that deals with spirulina and chlorella. So we'll start there. Katherine, can you tell us a little bit of your background and why you ended up down the spirulina and chlorella? I know algae who knew algae could become the love of my life? Speaker 3: (05:51) Uh, well I, you know, I started with a traditional career. I have an MBA, was doing international business, blah, blah, blah. And then my younger sister in Canada in Toronto, uh, developed breast cancer. And fortunately her oncologist advised her to change her diet to an alkaline one because they said it would help her with her healing process. She was going to do the chemo, but they didn't tell her what it was or why it worked. So she called me. Cause of course I love my sister, but also I'm just a really good researcher. I probably should have been a scientist. I said I have no idea what I'll go on a diet is, but you know, I know how to get on the internet and we'll figure this out. And it turned out to be mostly a plant based diet because of the phytonutrients and mostly the chlorophyll that helped build your immune system. Speaker 3: (06:34) And so when you're doing chemo, having a strong immune system is critical. I mean it's important at anytime, but certainly when you're doing chemo. So she did change her diet. She did heal from her, uh, breast cancer and 10 years later she's still cancer-free. And in the process of helping her with her research, I read about 10 books on plant based nutrition. Now this is 10 years ago, nobody was talking about plant based nutrition then as they are now, it's mainstream now. And I was like this outlier and I said, I was crazy, blah blah blah. But I just saw the science. I said, no, this is, this is important stuff. Somebody should tell the rest of the world that, well I have no nutrition background, but I saw what it did for my sister. I know I can help other people. I'm going to give it a shot. Speaker 3: (07:16) I have no idea how I'm going to do it, what kind of education I'm going to get. But I gave up my 25 year corporate career for a year for a health coaching certificate. But you know, gave me a little bit of science. Um, after I graduated, I taught nutrition for a year at corporations and hospitals anywhere who would let me in, cause I put a curriculum together and to try to teach people how to, you know, to incorporate more greens into their diet. And I learned two important lessons from that. One is that everybody knows they do need to eat more greens and to most people either don't like them or it's too much work or their kids or their husbands won't eat them. So they're, they're stuck. So I thought, okay, if I'm going to help people get healthier, prevent all these chronic illnesses or recover from them, I've got to find something that's green, fast, easy, doesn't require any work. Speaker 3: (08:11) And back to the internet. I went and I started digging around trying different things and I found the algae. Now I found it for my sister originally but hadn't really dug deep into it. So I dug deep and I was like, Alison wanted landfall in the rabbit hole because I found out that algae is the most nutrient dense fit in the world. It's the most alkaline fluid in the world. It's the most studied food in the world. There are 100,000 studies documenting the various athletics, um, physical, mental, any aspect of algae. It pulls out toxins, you name it, but there's 100,000 studies. And the problem is this knowledge hasn't gotten out of the scientific community and into the consumer world, but it has an Asia where it's a multibillion dollar industry and they've been using it for 50 years. And you know, in Japan, they don't take supplements. Speaker 3: (09:03) They just take chlorella, algae every day. And I point out to people that in Japan they have some of the best longevity, the lowest cancer rates, the best skin and hair. And I think a lot, you know, some of it is I attribute to the algae. So when I started seeing how powerful algae was and how easy it was to take, cause you could just swallow it and you're done. Um, and you know, it's endorsed by the United nations as the answer to world hunger is adores by nationals, the most nutrient dense food in the world. And they feed as the astronauts. I thought, okay, that's it. I'm spending the rest of my life to help people understand algae because I think it's the last chance we have to get nutrients into our bodies at the same time. By the way, we're also helping the environment because it's ecofriendly sustainable and we can talk about all that as well. So it's been a very exciting, challenging ride because everyone in my family and my friends thought I was off my rocker, but, um, but I, and I was on a show called shark tank. I don't know if you're familiar. Yeah. And, um, they made fun of me of course. And they said, we don't think you're in love with being an entrepreneur. You're just in love with algae. And I said, well, you're right. I am in love with algae and if you knew as much as I did about algae, you wouldn't love it. Speaker 3: (10:15) Oh man. There I am. 10 years later, uh, I feel algae is my, my, uh, super child that I'm, I'm helping to coax into the world. Uh, and it's about to be discovered in a big way. In fact, um, here in America there's a, um, uh, fast, uh, food. It's healthy food. It's called sweet greens, very, very healthy chain. They've got a hundred, a hundred and some stores. And just today they announced that their, um, their, their biggest effort this year is they're going to create a kelp salad bowl. Kelp is, they said, wow. You know, 2020 is the year of Kelp. And of course, kelp is part of the algae story. It's all part of the same family. So it's like, okay, we're getting closer. I have to stop you there because you need five minutes. You've just given us a condensed version of 10 years and there's a number of areas we can go down the list. Speaker 3: (11:09) So, uh, we talking, so algae, so the blue green algae, we're talking spirulina in chlorella and in particular, right? We talking spirulina being one of the most perfect foods on the planet, the most nutrient dense. Is that correct? Yes. So, um, I'll step back a little bit cause it really helps me, it took me a while to figure this out. So I'm eager to share the simplicity of it. It's like anything, once you know how to do something, it's easy. But until then it's a big mystery, right? So algae is just another food group. You know, we have fruits and we have vegetables. algae is a its own food group and it subdivides into two subgroups. So let's take fruits for example. Um, you might have bananas and apples as two subgroups. Well, within algae you have, um, seaweed or kelp and micro algae. Speaker 3: (12:02) And then taking the analogy of the fruits with apples, there's different types of apples. There's granny Smith apples, there's delicious apples. Well within the micro algae category, there are two main types. There's blue green and green, and one blue green algae is spirulina and one green algae is chlorella. Now these two are really the only two that are harvested as a crop. So it's number one to point out that algae, spirulina and chlorella are not a supplement. They are a food crop. And also equally important is they are not grown in the ocean. They are grown and cultivated in fresh water. It's called a hydroponic. A lot of lot of farmers grow hydroponic salad and tomatoes. algae is the same way. It's just grown in fresh water. Now I mentioned this because there are thousands and thousands and thousands of other strains of blue, green and green algae all growing in oceans, lakes, swamps, warming pools, your aquarium. Speaker 3: (13:08) And those are all poisonous and toxic. So if anyone is listening to this and they, and they go online and they read about toxic blue green algae, yes. That if it came from the ocean, not spirulina or chlorella, they are not toxic. And the reason why is cause algae will absorb whatever's in the water. So if it's in a contaminated water supply, of course it's going to be toxic. And I spent, I've spent a lot of years making sure that because we sell our products from doctors and functional medicine and wellness clinics, so they needed to be sure ours was pure and clean. So we do third-party lab tests here in the United States by an FDA approved lab. We even test for neurotoxins. Well, I think I'm the only company, algae company in the world that proves that there are no neurotoxins that are algae. Speaker 3: (13:58) So I just mentioned this because people will go to the internet and they'll start Googling algae and they'll find some information about toxins and then there'll be panicked. And I want to assure you there is no, there are no toxins. Certainly not an R spirulina or chlorella because we grow them very carefully and monitor them and test them, but they're grown in fresh water. It's a crop, not a supplement. Gotcha. And now if we go into the breakdown of, of the spirulina in the, um, chlorella or as far as the, the, it's, it's packed with protein. It's packed with um, pretty much everything to sustain. When I, when I started looking into it, I'm going, well we actually, we don't need to eat anymore. We can just say spirulina. That's true. She didn't live forever on spirit and although the only nutrient it does not have is vitamin C, which is really interesting. Speaker 3: (14:55) But other than that, or not much vitamin D, but other than that, in fact I'm the one and I should put a press release about it. I would about this. I know, I noticed, I saw it years ago, I saw a chart that identified all the nutrients in mother's breast milk, especially all the amino acids. Yes. Gosh, that looks awfully familiar. And sure enough, I checked our amino acid profile in spirulina. Exactly the same aminos. Exactly the same portions. So, and that helped explain to me why in Japan if babies are born and they cannot digest mother's breast milk, the only thing that keeps them alive is spirulina and water in it. Now I understand it's because the nutrient profile is very similar to two mother's breast milk. But of course, everyone knows mother's breast milk is the perfect food after the age of two, it's a little tough to get right. Speaker 3: (15:44) And actually I was just, I've just been reading a study on um, uh, brace, smoke and its anticancer properties with the, uh, what is it? The LBM and the, the, Oh, there's the name of it. One of the, and I wonder if part of it is cause it say well, you know. Yeah. Um, so, uh, and we can talk to, I would like to explain to your listeners the difference between the two allergies because they, they do completely different things in your body. But just while you're talking about the cancer thing, um, as I mentioned, spirulina is a blue green algae and chlorella is a green algae. And the rate, the reason why they're called that is because spirulina has two pigments in it. The one that everybody knows is chlorophyll, which is a green pigment and that, and chlorella only has the green, but spirulina has another pigment in it that's blue and it's called phycocyanin. Speaker 3: (16:34) Now, the interesting, and we won't dwell too much on this, but the interesting thing about phycocyanin as it relates to cancer, is that it has what's called anti-angiogenesis properties. I know that's a mouthful, but basically what it means is that when there are cancers or tumors, they find a way to literally hijack the blood vessels to reroute them to feed the cancer or the tumor. And there are different nutrients that will stop that process. Cause that process where they hijack the blood vessels is called angiogenesis. And so something that's anti angiogenesis stops that process. And this pigment called phycocyanin has been proven to be able to do that. Well, if you have a blood cancer, obviously it's not going to help because there's no cancer or tumor. Everything else, it's, it's very powerful. So, um, but aside from that, spirulina is generally known as an energizing algae, um, and it has the highest concentration of protein as you mentioned in the world. Speaker 3: (17:39) Now, this is why in 1974 the United nations had a global conference on spirulina and, and endorsed it and it, and still does as the answer to world hunger because it has three times the amount of protein in it that animal protein. And of course it's a crop that you can grow. So it still is the answer to world hunger. And if I can get my company growing and we get to be as big as I want it to be like, believe me, that will be one of the things that I try to help accomplish in my lifetime is to teach other people in other lands to grow this, to feed their, you know, their countries and yeah, people. But so, so the reason why spirulina is so energizing, number one is it has all this protein and the proteins already in amino acid form, which means your body as an athlete, you know this, you have your, you already doesn't have to break down the protein to get access to it. Speaker 3: (18:34) And what's even cooler is that, and most people don't know this, but spirulina is technically a bacteria. It does not have a cellulous wall. So the reason why this is important, particularly for athletes is because again, there's nothing for your body to break down to get access to the protein and the other Koreans. So it's absorbed virtually instantly. And uh, so normally do you get all the aminos? It's loaded with B vitamins, which convert the glucose into energy. And it also has the highest concentration of iron in the world. Iron carries oxygen in your blood. It helps my body. I know. It helps your body. Yeah. Oh yeah. It's pretty cool. I can, I can go even geekier on the oxygen today cause I've got, you know, like a lot of athletes have anemia, like problems since runners, amino acids are a part of, you know, the, the things that I get my all my athletes on so that they can get access to it. Speaker 3: (19:32) So anything that, um, and, and since listening to you on, um, our mutual friend boomer, uh, Edison's podcasts, I've had my husband now who's training for an ultra marathon in four weeks time. I'm tasting this Berliner and his regime as it was for us, for his training, um, and finding fantastic results. And I've never, I never made the connection before between, okay. You know, I knew about spirulina, I knew the basics, but I didn't understand it could actually be the perfect food for endurance athletes. It is the perfect, we in fact field, so many Olympic athletes during the associate winter Olympics that I sent two of my team over to Sochi and because I'm Canadian and we were getting known by the Canadian Olympic teams, we had full access to the Canadian Olympic village and I had a previous Olympic athlete on my U S team here. And so we got complete access to the us Olympic village as well. So it was pretty, it was pretty cool. Speaker 3: (20:32) Uh, athletes who competed in that winter Olympics were metaled and they publicly, uh, I have declared, you know, the, you know, congratulate us for helping them get there. So it was, it was a pretty low, yeah, we interested to tastes of it more, uh, with your products and the, um, in the, in the super long distance. And endurance's which is my background and we train a lot of experts in that area. So how would, what sort of results you could get if you were doing like mega long distances? Cause uh, digestive issues are a major problem for ultra endurance athletes like GI pain. Um, jeez, because all your bloods in your muscles of course, when that's right in your yeah, it's not doing well as far as, so the big problem comes in, how do you get enough energy in while you're running for two days, three days, whatever the rice is. Speaker 3: (21:24) Um, and this could be a perfect solution for a whole, well, April, it is the perfect solution. And in fact, I used to speak at triathlon clubs about this and they used to at first nail me because they said, well, I don't believe how anything with one calorie per tablet can give me energy. So I had to do the deep dive in the science and I have all the answers. Why not only that, I have anecdotal evidence because I can give you a list of, you know, 20 ultra runners who were run a hundred miles only on our algae and water. That's it. Nothing else. Wow. And to your point about the, um, anemia, um, I've learned for a long time, there's something called the foot strike. There's something about when the athlete's foot hits of Ash halt, it causes the iron to dissipate. And it's a real problem for, for Addie. Speaker 3: (22:18) Yeah. Yeah. That's Brenner's, Vimeo, yadda. Well, this is my answer. I'm really excited because I have to have constant, um, like iron infusions. Um, Oh, Oh, Oh. And my, my, and I'm not alone in this problem. There are a lot of female athletes especially, um, who are always at the bottom means, and of course their performances in and P because you can't carry enough blood and enough oxygen and, okay. Well we'll, we'll get you hooked up with some our cause. So, so the, uh, so the spirulina, you also have to be sure you take enough of it. We'd say we recommend 30 tablets for someone who's going on a run. Oh wow. Okay. So you know, if you only take three or four or you can, if you're just a mild runner, you know, he can take three, four. But if you're going to do a, you know, more than three or four miles, we suggest the full 30 tablets and there is never, this is why the athletes love it. Speaker 3: (23:11) Not only do they get the energy, it's steady energy. It's not a rush. It's not a crash. It's just steady. It's not just physical, it's mental. Because you also know as you fatigue, the first thing that goes is your focus, but you never get stomach distress because it literally gets absorbed into your bloodstream before it hits your, your GI track. It's that because there's no, you know, selling as well. Yeah. Yeah. The protein is already in aminos and all the other, um, the iron and the B vitamins and they make it three. Everything is attached to the amino. Everything just gets absorbed so quickly. It's, it's, um, it's amazing. So it's also got a mega three. So does it have B12 or is the B12 missing? Yes, it does have. B12. Um, and I'm, I have to admit, I'm on the fence. I don't promote the B12 because I honestly don't know whether it's functioning as a B12, but it's there. Speaker 3: (24:07) Cause we do the, you know, the lab test and it does have a mega three, so it's a sustainable source of, of Omega three. And it's also vegan of course. excuse me. So, uh, it's, uh, it has things like boron, which helped with your, your, uh, mental focus in the telomeres, um, and helps with coordination. So there's, I have a document I'll send you that itemizes about 20 different reasons why spirulina is the perfect fuel in every single possible way. Um, so it's, yeah, it's, it's, it's super excited to try have half of our athletes and I've always seen what being like my husband obviously not dosing him up enough. I think I need to get more. Yeah. Well and, and you just, um, and so when you go on the long runs and then every, you know, hour, a couple hours, when you're starting to feel a little fatigued, take another 10 or 15 you'll, it's like anything, you kind of have to play around with it and see what works for your body. Speaker 3: (25:05) But in general, spirulina is that energizing algae helps with your physical energy, your mental focus. It satisfies hunger. So we have a lot of people who are biohackers keto, paleo who use it for intermittent fasting because it is ketogenic. It does not decrease your ketones or both. We've had a test that I was just at a Quito conference where I, I saw boomer, uh, and, and so it's very in embrace it also a lot of people when they're on the keto diet or they're not eating many greens cause they don't want the carbs. Uh, so this answers your solution cause there's zero carbs but it has the highest concentration of chlorophyll in the world, but you need to maintain your health. So it's truly the perfect food. And, um, as I say, spirulina, I will say it doesn't taste very good. So people either swallow it or put it into a smoothie. So that's your best way to, it's totally chewable. I, I do eat mine, but you know, it's my company and it's sort of like my dropped, so to sneak. So don't feel we, in fact, we have these sassy stickers that we send, we give out at particular, you know, some only select events, but then the sticker says it's okay to swallow. Speaker 3: (26:25) We have a sense of humor, right. Probably not as bad as much nutrients as both of those things. Well, you know, there is so much nutrition that um, even if you take five a day, it's probably more nutrition than your body is getting an entire week. It's that crazy. Yeah. So between protein and the 40 vitamins and minerals and all the B vitamins and the Omega threes, it's off the charts, the antioxidants and we, it really, it's off. The antioxidants was an interesting one. So it helps. So it can help your LDL your cholesterol, LDL and your triglyceride profile too, can't it? Yes. Yes. oxidation. I understand. So it can help reduce the oxidation effect that, yeah. Yep. Absolutely. And while we've had people who, who have the first normal blood pressure reading after even two days of taking the spirulina, it's that fast. Yeah. Yeah. It's pretty, Oh, all drug free. Speaker 3: (27:23) Noninvasive, just nutrient dense mother nature at her best. It's, it's pretty cool. Ready, simple answer. Like, so some of them were like a brain injury, like my mother. Um, what sort of like dosages would you say for here? Like if I had not been giving her enough? Probably. Um, and is it safe to go to a higher amount because it is only a food, isn't it? Yes, it, I tell people, well, you can't, you can't overdose on salad. Um, so we sell single servings of her of 30 tablets. And originally we were telling everybody to take 30 tablets a day or 30 tablets before a workout. Um, that's because we were working initially with elite athletes and that's how many it took for them to feel the improvements. But now we're really working with a lot of consumers who are very nutrient deprived. So any small amount will will make a difference. So we're suggesting three or four or five a day, but you know, feel free to take 30. And I personally have about a hundred a day and half for the last eight years. So, so there's no bloody good. Speaker 3: (28:28) You would be surprised how old I am. Um, so for my age, I do look very young. I was in LA recently and I took a sub, a train, a rapid train. I was in a suburb and taking the train to, into LA and um, seniors could ride for 35 cents and I qualified as a senior. I'm a senior now. Why? To go just and, and I'm very much like into the, like I'm, I'm, I'm getting old too. I'm 51 at the moment and I'm like, I want to age like a superstar. I don't want to give the normal aging things. I'm like, Oh no, it's not. I'm not, I'm not, I'm not aging gracefully and nor should you and I'm way over, I'm way over that. So, uh, so obviously you're doing something right. So blue, green algae. Speaker 3: (29:28) So chlorella. So, and also by the way, fear Lena was the first life on earth almost 4 billion years ago. Chlorella developed about a billion years afterwards. And it does belong to the plant kingdom, although technically it is not a plant. It's a sea vegetable because it doesn't have any phytates or um, any of the anti-nutrients that you know, that, um, can cause some problems with people. So it's, it's its own little category. So chlorella, unlike spirulina, does not give you energy, but what it does is it build your immune system and pulls out toxins. So it helps you cover from anything. It helps you recover from any kind of illness. In fact, it prevents them. Uh, and it does this in a number of ways. First of all, it has the highest concentration of chlorophyll in the world. Remember, that's what got my sister her. The oncologist advised her to change her diet to an alkaline one because of the chlorophyll which builds your immune system. Speaker 3: (30:27) Chlorophyll is a fat-based pigment. And why that's important is because your health starts at the cellular level. So it's the cell walls and the mitochondria. Now if the cell walls are not healthy and they need healthy fats to be healthy, um, that causes, um, disruption in your homeostasis and nutrients can't get in and toxins can't get out. So chlorophyll, you know that people always say how greens are cleansing. Well, this is what's cleansing about it. It's the chlorophyll that heals the cell walls. So did you can get in and toxins can get out and at the toxins. And if neither of that is happening, your mitochondria is suffer, your ATP is lower. You start to get rogue cells that don't communicate that which lead to cancer cells and it's a downward spiral from there. So chlorophyll is very important to maintaining your health. And there is nothing in the world that has more chlorophyll than chlorella. Speaker 3: (31:22) It even has 25 times more chlorophyll than liquid chlorophyll because liquid chlorophyll is made from alfalfa sprouts. It has a, I think 200 times more chlorophyll in spinach, a thousand times more than you know, cabbage. And I have this all on a chart from the Linus Pauling Institute showing all the different concentrations. Um, so, so chlorophyll very, very important. But in chlorella. Second, chlorella has never, I said spirulina has no celly. This wall with chlorella has the hardest in the entire plant. Kingdom is that hard cell wall that attaches to toxins and pulls them out. So oppose that led mercury. Aluminum athletes use it after any kind of sport because it pulls out lactic acid so your muscles aren't sore the next day. Um, people use it for, um, after drinking wine, beer or anything because it attaches to the alcohol. Well, the, the chemicals, the toxins that are released by the alcohol and pulls them out. Speaker 3: (32:21) So you are sober in an hour and a half and you never have a hangover. Seriously. I know. It's crazy. Good old chlorella. So it pulls out toxins. We have customers who use it to pull out excess chemotherapy after their treatments. You need to wait two days after your treatment because it will identify the chemotherapy as a toxin. And we want you to be sure to get your treatment and then pull it out. But they used it at a Chernobyl Hiroshima Fukushima, because in Asia, they all know that chlorella is the only thing that pulls out radiation. So in fact, after the Fukushima disaster seven years ago, the entire Asian supply of chlorella was bought up and there was nothing available for two months because it takes a month, bro and a month to dry and all that sort of stuff. So, um, so it's been documented, um, all around the world for pulling out toxins. Speaker 3: (33:15) We work with, um, a biological dentist who use it to, um, when they pull up, um, AMA grams because of course it's mercury and they use it for themselves as well as their patients. Cause of course they're inhaling the fumes from the feet. Wow. Chlorella also has the highest concentration of RNA and DNA in the world, which is important as you age because this will help your, your own RNA DNA to grow back healthier. It has something called chlorella growth factor, which speeds up the growth of yourselves. So if you injure yourself or have surgery that combined with the RNA and DNA and all the other stuff, you heal literally half the time. It's unbelievable. It's really unbelievable. Chlorella also has the daily requirement of a vitamin called vitamin K too. Now, listeners aren't familiar with K two. It's a very important vitamin only discovered 25 years ago. Speaker 3: (34:08) Um, they attribute a lot of heart, a heart disease and Alzheimer's to too much calcium in your blood vessels or your brain wrinkles in your skin from too much calcium. Um, uh, kidney stones. How much calcium, cause we're all taking calcium and we're all taking of calcium going into the softest. It's absorbed in the wrong places. Zorba in your bones. So what's happening is gathering in your soft tissue like your blood vessels, your brains and only K2 will activate the two proteins that move it out of soft tissue and put it into your bones. So at the same time, it prevents osteoporosis, which is a classic problem for, for women. Um, and the only places you can get K2 from naturally from food is grass fed animal protein. I know you guys have a lot of grass fed animals in New Zealand. Um, there's a disc called natto, which is a Japanese dish, which is really slimy and nobody likes to eat it. Speaker 3: (35:06) But I found out I did lab test. It's also in the algae, there's twice as much in the chlorella as there is in the spirulina. So it has your daily requirement of K2 in the chlorella. I mentioned this because, Oh, in general, I want people to understand that spirulina is an energizing algae and chlorella is a wellness and health and detox algae. It's a wellness LG. So if you want to recover from anything or prevent any illness, chlorella is your answer. Um, and spirulina will always give you energy and help keep you focus. So there's two of them. Yeah, I didn't understand that distinction. And I mean I've hooked into the, the um, vitamin D Kate in K2 and vitamin a, um, combination to get the calcium out of the soft tissues and then to the bones where it shouldn't be. Yeah. I didn't realize that the K2 was incorrect. Speaker 3: (35:59) So that's a real, yes. Well, I think I'm the only one that I think I'm the only one that knows that as I'm this closet researcher and I'll be, cause I need to know the answers. I need to know why this works so well because nobody else has explained algae the way that I explained it. And I could only, as you know, you only become um, you become a good teacher when you have dug deep into complex matters and then you, you find a way to simplify them for people. So I was, I needed to go through the complexity and now, I mean simplify them for people so they don't have to, but I have the research in case they want the backstory so they know that it's all legitimate and documented and all that sort of stuff. So I'm pretty amazing. And so in people, when people ask me when to take the algae, well you could take either of them alone, together with food instead of food morning, noon, night. Speaker 3: (36:57) However, in most cases people want energy in the morning and during the day, maybe before a workout, before an important meeting or a school or whatever. So take your spirit, you know, whenever you want energy and take your chlorella at anytime you want to eat it. Uh, but certainly at nighttime, because if you've done a workout, it will pull up the lactic acid. If you've had any wine or cocktails, they'll pull the alcohol out. Um, it helps your, your body goes through detox cycle when you sleep anyways. So this Patil is facilitates the detox. Speaking of which, uh, about the brain health. You know, when you're sleeping, your brain has a lymphatic system of its own. What? And so the important, one of the many important reasons for getting a deep sleep is it will not activate. And unless you're in that, I think Delta, whatever, again, number one sleep pattern. Speaker 3: (37:49) So, so it washes your brain. And so while it's cleaning out these talks as it's pulling out things like aluminum that caused things like Alzheimer's. So if you have the chlorella in your system while you're sleeping, it will facilitate that cleansing process, not only of your body, but of your brain. I mean it's going to happen anyways. But the true, you know, street washing, if you want to say of your brain occurs when you're sleeping, yes. Go. So it's important to have the chlorella when you're sleeping. I think every single person in the world should be taking chlorella every single day because, um, I was reading, there's something like 280 chemicals in America that have been released since world war II and about 200 of them, of the 200 have been tested. So there's, we're surrounded in our, in our air, in our clothing, and you've got to get those things out, uh, and were there also buried in ourselves. Speaker 3: (38:42) So, um, until you get rid of them, they're just going to cause silent damage and inflammation. So it's in all of us is adding to the aging, you know, we, we, we have in this society, we have this belief that aging is inevitable, but you know, like there's so many aspects to it. And if we tackle them one by one, I'm sure you know, if you're a divest Bree fan or not, I don't know. But yeah, not attacking all the different pillars of aging and you know, one of them being like this sort of stuff, getting into this stuff, getting the right nutrients and the right amounts at the right times and understanding we don't have to age like how our grandparents aged or even our parents age, you know, we've got a chance at it in this day and age that we can change our, uh, you know, the time that we are going to be healthy for and the time that we going to live for. Speaker 3: (39:33) And you and I being, you know, North of, uh, 40, both have a vested interest in making this crackly. Yeah. Well, um, the other good thing about chlorella is it actually tastes pretty good. So, um, particularly if you put a little sea salt on it or eat it with the best is if you eat it with macadamia nuts, which is great because macadamia nuts are loved by the keto community. And when you eat macadamia nuts and chlorella are at least ours, it tastes like you're eating potato chips. I swear to God, it is unbelievable. And so if you can learn to like my tastes pretty good with almonds as well, or banana chips or coconut chips or whatever, but the macadamia and the chlorella and a little bit of sea salt is the magic just snack guys. And not only is it a healthy snack, it's truly a healing snack. Speaker 3: (40:27) You can be pulling out toxins and you can be building your RNA and DNA and you can be cleansing yourselves at the same time. I mean it's, that's why I call it efficient nutrition. It can do all of these things so effectively in such small quantities like nothing else in the world. So it's pretty funny. I'm now starting to see why you are so passionate about, Oh, I know with all that responsibility to share this. So funny. You know like you, you with your sister starting off of the studio. I've been on a journey with my mom and ma and my own health as well. And you just like, you get the answers and this is why I do this podcast and you're like, I want to share this one. Everybody knows this. I go like dog. And so you like this, what we try to give your knowledge to, to people and to share it and, and you just can't have a big enough impact fast enough. Speaker 3: (41:20) I know, you know. Well, I'm so glad you know that podcasts have developed because people like you, um, have an audience that is eager to learn. I'm eager to, I'm eager to educate, but you know, the average person on the street doesn't want to learn. They want to go home and eat their crappy food and watch TV. You know, I don't even know. I haven't had a TV in 10 years. And it's like, why would you watch television when you can learn about the science of things that are going to change people's lives? I mean, seriously. Here may, I'm sitting on the plane in between conferences and I'm either listening to a recording from some scientific lecture or, or I'm, uh, reading something and every moment is filled with stuffing things in my brain. And sometimes it gets to the point where I have to actually stop and go, no, I am going to just watch a movie or something because the brain fried. But I'm like, uh, time is short and I've got so much to cram in there. Keeps popping out the other side. I know that, right. Speaker 3: (42:25) Well that is shining in that. And I'm so grateful to folks like you and also other vendors who are trying their best to get products to the community that wants to preserve their health or, or encourage their families to preserve their health. Because we're so surrounded with sugar and carbs and toxins and, uh, we have to be proactive too and take charge of our lives because nobody else is gonna do it for us. And ICP, all the people with walkers. And I'm thinking, that's not going to be me. So, yeah. And, and, and, and that's, we've, we've lived, we've grown up in a world where you were told, the doctor knows everything you're like of doctor is God and what they say goes in and, and this nothing, nothing. He gets doctors. Um, but we cannot give up a responsibility for our own health to somebody else because that busy, they've got a hundreds of patients, they've got 10 minutes to see you. Speaker 3: (43:23) They are definitely influenced by the pharmaceutical companies. You cannot rely on that as being the only place that you get your information to ask to be responsible. And we live in a day and age where we can be responsible, we can go, we can't access the studies we can. And not everyone's a science news like we are. Um, but you can still find some really good information even on a surface level. Um, and this is why it's important that people take ownership of their own health in ways we even eat better, get connected with nature, you know, understand what these rhythms in our bodies so that we can optimize it. Well, it's a, it's a great time because, um, uh, you know, I'm also a Reiki healer and I've just, I've been interested in nature all my life and, and it's, and I do yoga and I also do high intensity workouts and it's not woo woo. Speaker 3: (44:15) Like, it's just, you start to understand that we're all connected and if you treat your body, uh, holistically and the environment holistically, you will just feel better and you'll be more loving and you'll just, everything will work better. So anyways, I truly believe algae is part of that solution. Also from an environmental perspective because you know there are a lot of the oceans are being overfished for their fish oil. The algae. Where do you think the fish get the Omega three from? They get it from algae. They only can, yeah, that's where it comes from. So go to the bottom, the original source of the mega three, get it from the algae yourself. By the way, almost all um, fish oil goes rancid in the PR and the production basis three a day and the Omega three and algae never goes rancid. Speaking of which, our bags, we have to put an expiry date on it. Speaker 3: (45:07) So it's usually two or three years out, which is pretty long and its own right. But technically it never goes bad cause it's just a dried vegetable. And you could keep this for 10 years and open it up and still be fine. Absolutely fine. So mom, and that's because algae is a unique, um, as I said, it's not really a plant. Um, I read recently a group from national geographic went up to the Antarctic and they took a chunk of ice that was carbon dated to almost 4 billion years old. And they took it back lab. Yeah. And they, some of it in a Petri dish cause they saw some algae was attached to the ice and they, and they put on it and the LG started growing like over 300 years old and starts growing again because LG never dies. It just goes dormant. Isn't that crazy? It's amazing. So if we ate the LG thin, perhaps we won't ever die. It would be great to have people taking it because I'm going to live forever. So I need friends who are going to be with me, take my allergies. I'll have someone to hang out with. Speaker 3: (46:11) You got to have that attitude at least. So we can't lie. We can, we can do me and Dave Asprey will be the last one standing and stuff. And with the chlorella, I, um, I remember you saying on boomers podcast that it does have a hard cellular wall. So the way that it's broken down that cellular wall so that you can digest it as a human, um, has implications from where you should get your core hours. Yes. Well, thank you for mentioning that. So I, um, first of all, the whole, um, LG industry has started with chlorella in Japan and there's a company called sun chlorella that started this all but 50 years ago. And I'm very grateful to them because it took them 10 years to figure out how to grow chlorella for mass consumption. And they, and they, that they're the ones that found out that you had to crack the cell wall because it is so hard. Speaker 3: (47:06) Um, and if it wasn't cracked, your body would not be able to absorb the nutrients. So, uh, it still will pull out toxins, but you won't get any of the nutrients. So they developed and patented a technique called dynamo, which, um, virtually the entire industry uses, uh, chlorella industry because of course, spirulina has no cell wall. Um, and they, they tumble the chlorella with glass beads. Now what happens is the glass heats up and there was always concerned that led from the glass leaked into the chlorella and they always declined and said, no, that didn't happen. Didn't happen. But, um, about 10 years ago, just when I was starting the company, the state of California tested their chlorella and did find it had excess amounts of lead in it. So they said, well, you can either stop selling here or put a warning on your package, which is what they did. Speaker 3: (47:55) So by sun, chlorella and America, you'll see a warning on the package. But the bigger problem is it's not just them that uses this technique. It's virtually an entire chlorella industry. So when I started the company 10 years ago, I, I heard that this was a potential problem. And I said, there's got to be another way to crack the Corolla. We've got to find some, but some other way. And there was a new technique that had just come out and that's what we use. It's um, you pass the chlorella through a sound chamber and it's the vibrations that crack LA chlorella. It's very similar to how an opera singers voice can crack a class. So it's the vibrations that are cracking the cell wall. I told this to somebody recently and they said, Oh well your, your chlorella has good vibrations. Yes. Yeah, we're all, we're all buy, buy, buy, buy, buy bations cause I'm also a regular so I owe all about energy and I if you haven't, if your listeners are not familiar with dr Joe Dispenza, um, yeah, yeah. I would encourage you, cause DePaulo him as well is incredible. And we sent him some product actually recently. My dream is to have our stuff at his seminars. I hope to go to one soon. He's, he's, he is, he's unbelievable. Unbelievable. He, he has between him and algae, I think we can, we, we have a future, we have a future and maybe add in a couple of others. Like I'm Dr. Bruce Lipton and divest and yeah. Speaker 3: (49:30) Yeah. Oh man, those guys, I, I'm so grateful to them. I've been reading their books for 20 years and I'm now getting to learn even more. And it all makes sense when you start to read about these different techniques and what everyone's doing. It all starts to make sense. So, and this is an exciting age to live in and I, we're getting off track, but the science is catching up with the Woodward community community where it was considered, you know, these, some of these things were considered like Reiki and like other things. Then it was a bit off the beaten track and no science. And now the science is actually proving a lot of the Eastern rights and things and you know, Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, medicine, um, course, you know, acupuncture, all of those things. And now I've got scientific backing that they are actually, um, and this is a really interesting convergence now and that's what I loved about Dr. Bruce Lipton's work toe was he actually managed as a, as a molecular biologist to connect the spiritual world. Speaker 3: (50:30) Even with the cellular bio, you know, biology and epigenetics. It was a visit and sign book there. The biology of life. I love that, that book. Um, and to see it all coming together. And I think as we get into quantum physics and things that are coming up down the road, I think, wow, you know, there's into the quantum realm, it's going to probe. A lot of these things have real value in real science behind it. Well, and as a small segue, that's one of many reasons why I'm in love with algae. Cause I tell people, Hey, before algae earth was just water and gas, there was not anything living on earth 4 billion years ago. Now I don't know why spirulina showed up, but it did. It's a single cell organism. And after, and it releases, oxygen was growing. So after a billion years, it released enough oxygen that other life forms could, could grow, which brought chlorella, which then brought more oxygen to earth, which allowed more life forms. Speaker 3: (51:31) And then eventually we had life in the ocean. And then we had terrestrial life. And then the old, only 800 million years ago did life. Humans show up. But there's gotta be, I think there's something mystical about allergy because it was the first single cell life on earth. Um, and it's still here and it's, you know, they would prove that it's got something about it. It doesn't die. It doesn't, you know, it's, it's been around a long time. They might be something more to it even then than the size of it. Right, right. So I, I'm Kiffin I know you're, you're, you're extremely tired and busy. Um, I'm gonna wrap it up there in a moment, but I, I just wanted to talk about where people can get your product and make sure that they're getting a good quality supplements. And, um, Catherine's been doing this way obviously for a very long time. Speaker 3: (52:24) A new company is energy buts.com. Um, and so anybody who's in America, Canada, we're asked you ship to, or we don't ship internationally, although ironically, we stopped shipping to New Zealand and Australia and we have a, um, a distributor who has a lovely couple, uh, Chris and Fria, they have a website called, uh, eat clean, live dirty.com. Dot. A U and they sell our products through their website, the eat clean live durney.com dot. A U. But if you buy, if you live anywhere other than a event that's usable and for Australia, you can buy from our website energy bits.com and we ship internationally into Canada, obviously throughout the U S uh, and when you shop on our website and use the discount code, Lisa L I S a could be uppercase or lowercase, it doesn't matter. Then you get 20% off your purchase and it works on everything all the time. But that's only on our website. Not that you need energy, but unfortunately Kiwis and Aussies, you have to just support the um, uh, eight clean lifts, dirty a website and you don't get the discount. But if you do, if you live in the States or Canada or anywhere else, you can get a 20% discount. So that's a really, really con thing. Thank you very much Catherine for that. Speaker 3: (53:52) And I'll, and it's very concentrated, so it's very high quality. If you also live in the United States, you can purchase from Amazon. We sell everything on Amazon, no discount codes work. And also on Amazon, we sell little pouches that have 30 tablets. On our website. You can only buy large bags that have a thousand tablets or boxes that have single single servings. But on Amazon you can buy for a $4 single serving and tested out if you'd like before you met to a large bag. And um, I'd also encourage people to come and visit us on Instagram. Our handle is at energy beds. Same with Facebook, it's in it at energy bits, um, or Twitter. And if you come to our website, you'll see we have two brands of spirulina. One is called energy beds, but we have a second brand of spirulina called beauty beds because it also builds your skin and hair health. Speaker 3: (54:41) And we wanted something that would be appropriate for spas and a little bit more girly, but it's exactly the same product, just different packaging. And then the chlorella we talked about, that's called recovery. That's, and then we have a fourth product called vitality bits, which is 50% spirulina, 50% chlorella in general, particularly if you're an athlete. We encourage you to buy them separately because you want to split, you know, load up on the spirulina before your workout and during your workout or run. And then you want to take the chlorella afterwards and then, or if maybe you had a little extra to drink extra chlorella or maybe you've got, you're sick and you're detoxing extra chlorella. But that way you have more control over the two different allergies cause they do completely different things in your body. That's important distinction because I didn't understand that really. Speaker 3: (55:30) So that's, that's really good. So endurance athletes, go and get your spirulina and chlorella and do it separately and have the S the spirulina before your workouts, the Corella after or in the evenings to you repeat it. So www.ENERGYbits.com I'll put the show notes. Of course you can get on my website, at least@tammany.com on the podcast, under the podcast button. We would have this all available for you. Um, and if you want to reach out to Katherine, can they reach you somewhere or just by your website? Yeah, they can. The customer carrot energy bits.com. I've written about a hundred papers on different aspects of LG white helps with different things. I'll send you a ton of stuff, Lisa, and you can put, you can post things. I'll send you a PowerPoint about widescreen for athletes. Um, yeah, like I said, we were, we were a sports nutrition product when we first started because the runners discovered us and then they told everybody else and that was that. And we'll, we'll keep spreading that word to the runners down on Stan, the sins of the world. So Katherine, thank you very much for your time today. I really appreciate it. I know you're super busy lady. Um, wonderful that we're connected. I'm sure we'll stay connected. Um, so yeah, all the best with your big mission in life to solve world hunger. And I tell people we're tiny but mighty and you will be too when you do geology. Fantastic. Speaker 1: (56:53) That's it this week for pushing the limits. For nearly 100 days, more than 500 Dutch pastors—as well as some from across the continent and the Atlantic—across denominations gathered in Bethel Church for a continuous worship service. Why? To protect a refugee family from deportation. From CT’s report: The Dutch government is generally prohibited from interrupting religious services, so the Protestant congregation kept extending their gathering during the debate over family asylum or kinderpardon. [Last week,] officials agreed to allow the Armenian family at Bethel—along with 700 others who have lived in the country for more than a decade—to have their cases reviewed again rather than face immediate expulsion. Christian leader Axel Wicke was closely involved with the planning and execution of the hundreds of hours–long service. Some of Wicke’s elderly church attendees told him that they stopped by the service in the middle of the night when they woke up and couldn’t go back to sleep. “I’m now quite familiar with who of my parish members are night people,” he said. Wicke found the experience transformative for his own spiritual life but also said it offered a profound picture of Christianity for people with little knowledge of the religion. “The reason why we did this was quite sad or depressing … but it was also a really big gift to this parish and to the church in the Hague,” said Wicke. “I still get messages along the line, ‘Finally, I know why there is a church.’ It was a very fundamental way of recognizing, ‘That’s what the church is for.’” Wicke joined digital media producer Morgan Lee and editor in chief Mark Galli to discuss how the past couple months changed his views on prayer, how to figure out the logistics of a continuous 24/7 church service, and what type of impact this might have on the Christian community in the Netherlands long-term.

This episode is a Monthly Medicine episode, an intuitively channeled forecast for the month of June. The sacred mantra for this month is ALIGNED EXPANSION. June is a profoundly powerful month on the wheel of the year. It splits the year in half, takes us from Gemini to Cancer, moves us through the Summer Equinox, and offers us a mid way point. It is a big review month. What have we done with our year thus far? What have we learned? Most importantly, how have we personally shifted or changed since January 1st? Since March 1st? The transformations and upgrades that we have been moving through, personally and collectively, have been enormous — layers upon layers are flaking off. Why? To support us in a long term expansion, one on solid ground with deep roots. We are shifting our relationship to success, fame, money, and desires, evolving into a place of deeper alignment. Last month, we were encouraged to begin to “let the light in” — now, we get to do work on all of the places that the light is showing up in our lives, preparing us to expand in a way we never have before, completely aligned with our truth, and our soul path. In this episode, Lindsay shares and dives deep into: • The energy of June and building off of May (0:52) • June’s sacred mantra: Aligned Expansion (7:57) • An example of this aligned expansion from Lindsay’s own life (19:00) • The medicine of Litha, or the Summer Equinox — a day of total balance (34:41) • A Wild Soul Tarot collective reading for the month of June — the medicine of the month: Six of Wands (35:36) • What we’re leaving behind in May: The Fool, reversed (40:40) • What we’re moving into in June: Queen of Cups (43:13) • Gentle message from Divine: The Hermit, reversed (45:32) • Moving from The Lovers (Gemini) to The Chariot (Cancer) in the Tarot (47:07) • The medicine of the Full Moon in Sagittarius (May 29th), New Moon in Gemini (June 13th), the Summer Solstice, and Full Moon in Capricorn (June 27th) (51:34) To sign up for the June 1st THE SACRED WHEEL: https://www.lindsaymack.com/thesacredwheel Find full show notes for this episode: https://wildsoulpodcast.com/blog/tarot-medicine-aligned-expansion ABOUT THE PODCAST Hosted by intuitive tarot reader, holistic counselor and teacher, Lindsay Mack, Tarot for the Wild Soul is a weaving of deep conversations with folks who use Tarot in their lives, channeled energetic offerings, intuitive readings on the months ahead, and mini Tarot lessons.
