I trust God, but sometimes I like to give God suggestions. You know just in case he was 50/50 on what to do, I like to interject by bright ideas and tell him how he could make things work out really good. I occasionally even tell God how he could do “cool things”, as if he was sitting on his throne in heaven stumped over how he could pull off something cool today and he was waiting on me to help him. Do you do that too? I wonder what God thinks of our ideas of taking the path of least resistance. I wonder how God views our tendency to desire what is fastest and easiest. I wonder how God feels about our complete avoidance of hardship, struggle, and suffering. Well, there just so happens to be a story in the bible about this exact thing. Let’s read it together. Matthew 16, Jesus is walking along with his disciples. They’re doing awesome miracles together and making a huge impact every where they go. In fact, they had just finished feeding the crowd of thousands with a small amount of bread and fish. Now they know his power. The disciples know Jesus is the One. They’re all in. Verse 21-23 “From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” Understand, Peter was just trying to save Jesus from suffering. He was trying to find an easier way. He was trying to fix this. And Jesus said, THIS SUFFERING DOESN’T NEED TO BE FIXED. THIS HARDSHIP DOESN’T NEED TO BE AVOIDED. That’s a hard pill to swallow. I want my suffering and your suffering to be fixed. Like immediately. I don’t want times to be hard for anyone. If there was something I could do to ease my friend's pain after her loss, gosh I would do it. If I could lift the suffering of my friend whose world has fallen apart, I would do it. If I could make your marriage problems go away, I would in a heartbeat. If I could solve your financial problems, boom, it would be fixed in an instant. If I could lift your burdens… If I could clear the way… If I could bring you healing … If I could restore what has been broken… I would be like Oprah. You get a new car. You get a good marriage. You get health. You get a whole family. You get a bonus. You get a baby. You get your answers. You all get EVERYTHING! No suffering. No struggle. No waiting. All your problems are fixed and there’s nothing but sunshine and glitter ahead, my friend. I really would fix it all for you … If I could. And to that, Jesus would say to me, “Satan, get behind me!” Why? Because just like Peter, I’m focusing on the wrong thing. I’m focusing on human concerns and overlooking the fact that God’s concerns are bigger, greater, and far beyond anything I can imagine. God is in the eternal game where current suffering will be redeemed. I tend to play in the right now game where suffering is always avoided. In your effort to avoid the suffering, go around the hardship, and skip the waiting line, have you become a stumbling block? Remember, that’s what Jesus called Peter. He was a stumbling block. His attempt to fix everything was in the way of God’s good plan. Honey, what if your attempt to fix everything is in the way of God’s good plan? What if God doesn’t need us to fix anything, and instead he needs us to partner with him in the bigger picture of what he is doing. What if this isn’t about what you’re going through right now, this is about what this will create for the future. What if God has magnificent plans that are so far above and beyond your scope of imagination, but the only way to get to them is through this stuff that doesn’t make sense? You know, this stuff you want to avoid. This stuff you want to skip. This stuff you’ve been giving God “suggestions” on fixing. Okay God, so this is going to fall apart? This is going to hurt? This isn’t going to work the way I had hoped? Now isn’t the time? I don’t like it, but I trust you. I will not try to fix your plans. I won’t get in the way of your work with my suggestions of an easier way. God has been trying to clear the way in your life, and you know what he’s been trying to move? YOU. You with your ideas of how it is supposed to be. You with your plans and good suggestions. You with your complete avoidance of current suffering that are for eternal purposes. What? You think you are above current suffering used for eternal purposes? You think you should be exempt from that? Dismissed because you’ve been a good person? Well, Sis, Jesus wasn’t dismissed and I’m pretty sure he was maybe even a little bit of a better person than even you. If Jesus wasn’t above suffering, why would we ever believe we are? I don’t want to be that stumbling block. I don’t want to be in the way of God’s plans. If God says I have to go through this, then I trust it’s for a purpose greater than my comfort. If God says this has to fall apart, I trust he will be doing something new on the other side of this and when I get there I’ll be more like the woman he created me to be. So, here we are Lord, trying our best to get out of the way. Here we are, surrendering to your plan that doesn’t make sense to us. Here we are, trusting you give and you take away, and our hands are to remain open. Here we are, counting on your timing to be better than our own. Here we are, trusting if you don't fix it and we can't avoid it, then you'll carry us through it. The problem with signs. "And these signs will accompany those who believe...," Jesus said. Or did He? We're pretty sure Mark didn't write the last section of the Gospel of Mark. "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign" - we know the Lord said that. "The Jews ask for signs," Paul informs us, but they don't understand or accept the proofs God has provided. What are we to think about miracles in general, and about this passage in Mark 16? One thing is certain for us all in this world: we will die. It is inevitable. Today on the Daily Nugget, Mike here. The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ came not only to save us from sin but also to defeat the power of Satan and the kingdom of darkness. Scripture tells us that through the cross Christ disarmed the spiritual powers and authorities and triumphed over them (Colossians 2:15), and that He appeared to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8). Because of Jesus' victory, the enemy's power is limited and temporary, and one day God will finally crush Satan completely (Romans 20).

The past Sunday Pastor taught on "What's the Answer - what is the unforgivable sin?" using Matthew 12:24-32. Today, Pastor digs deeper and takes a look at Mark 3:22-29 - which also talks about the "unforgivable sin."  In Mark 3:22-26 we read that the teachers of the law say that Jesus is possessed by the devil, doing healings in the devil's power and doing what the devil wants. But Jesus responds by sharing parables and asking how can Satan drive out Satan? A house divided cannot stand. And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand.  Jesus explains how illogical their accusations are. Jesus goes on in verse 27 saying that in fact no one can enter a strong man's house without first tying him up. Then his house can be plundered. Jesus is not denying the devil is strong, but He's saying He is stronger!  He is challenging these men to think things through, to think about what they are saying. Jesus is encouraging them to listen not to their prejudices, but to the Holy Spirit's testimony, that of what is spoken in scripture and the things that Jesus is doing and what the Spirit is revealing about who Jesus is. In verses 28-29 Jesus continues, "Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin."  He doesn't say they have done that sin, but reminds them that is the path they are on. Jesus tells them that ALL and any sins and slander can be forgiven, except the persistent refusal to listen to the Holy Spirit. Meaning never letting the Spirit in or listening to Him. The Spirit will transform our lives, Jesus will heal us, forgive us, and bring us into His eternal kingdom. Jesus' power and the Holy Spirit can deliver us from the bondage of the enemy and give us freedom through Jesus' saving power at the cross and resurrection because Jesus HAS bound the strong man! What kind of power and influence does Satan really have? How do I trust God when I see hospital workers not tending to my mother the way they should? Is God still concerned with the old covenant? How simple is salvation? Do I need to feel assurance for it to be true? What was Israel chosen for specifically? How can I understand the Bible better? So far, I'm having trouble!

This teaching opens with thanksgiving for answered prayer and fellowship, celebrating God's healing power and faithfulness, then transitions into a biblical exhortation rooted in Book of Revelation 2, focusing on the church in Thyatira—a small, working-class city facing intense pressure to compromise faith for economic survival through pagan trade guilds—while drawing illustrative parallels from Book of Acts 12 (Peter's miraculous release from prison), Book of Acts 16–17 (Lydia of Thyatira, a faithful seller of purple who responded to the gospel), and the resulting witness seen in the church addressed in Epistle to the Philippians, emphasizing that although Thyatira was culturally insignificant, Christ addressed it with the longest letter to warn against tolerated sin, false teaching (symbolized by “Jezebel”), and moral compromise, while calling believers to perseverance, holiness, and unwavering loyalty to Him despite social, financial, and spiritual cost. 

Today's question is one that Pastor says has been the question asked with the most fear.  Other ways this question is asked:     ⁃    What is the unforgivable sin?     ⁃    What is the sin against the Holy Spirit?     ⁃    How can I be sure I haven't done this?     ⁃    If I have done this is there any hope?     ⁃    How do I avoid the unforgivable sin? Matthew 12:31-32 Jesus says, "And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come." What is that sin? Let's start by looking at the context …     ⁃    Jesus was preaching and healing. Religious authorities saw Jesus as a threat. Jesus heals a paralyzed man and the religious leaders say Jesus is blaspheming because He told the man your sins are forgiven, take up your mat and walk. And the religious leadership are angry and they continue to get angrier. Matthew 9:3     ⁃    Matthew, one of Jesus' disciples, hosts a dinner, invites his tax collector friends and Jesus attends too. The religious leaders accuse Jesus of "eating with tax collectors and sinners." Matthew 9:11     ⁃    Jesus heals a demon possessed man and the religious leaders say Jesus was able to heal the man through demonic powers. Matthew 9:34     ⁃    Jesus and disciples are walking in the grain fields on the Sabbath Day, picking and eating grain and the religious leaders say they are working on the day of rest, which is unlawful. Matthew 12:2     ⁃    Jesus heals a demon possessed man and now the religious leaders plot to kill Jesus. Matthew 12:14     ⁃    Jesus heals a man and they say that Jesus healed by the power of Beelzebul (the devil) Matthew 12:24 It is at this point that we continue with the verses just before our text for the day on the unforgivable sin. We read in Matthew 12:25-28 "Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? (Meaning how can I be healing from demons by using demons?) And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you." What Jesus is saying is look at what you see.  Stop judging on the basis of your own anger and bitterness and look at what the Bible has said along. God's healing is being brought to people. The Holy Spirit is testifying that the Messiah has arrived! Then Jesus speaks the words we started with this morning. Note that the first words are "EVERY KIND OF SIN AND SLANDER CAN BE FORGIVEN." Jesus goes on and what He's saying is if we continually refuse to listen to the Holy Spirit and actually go so far as to call what the Spirit does as demonic then we are setting ourselves up for the unforgivable sin.  (Note: Jesus is not saying they have done this, but He is calling them to search the scriptures, to search their hearts.) The Holy Spirit always testifies to Jesus. Jesus is saying do not sin against the Spirit because if you persist in that you are cutting yourself off from the only One who can save. The Holy Spirit leads us to faith and to Jesus, who opens our eyes to see the goodness and grace of God. What is the sin against the Holy Spirit? IT IS THE CONSCIOUS, DELIBERATE AND PERSISTENT REJECTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT'S TESTIMONY TO THE IDENTITY AND SAVING POWER OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. Jesus speaks these words of warning to them to lead them to repentance and faith.  God is merciful. His desire is for ALL. Classic example:     ⁃    Saul of Tarsus - the persecutor of believers who becomes a transformed man - Apostle Paul.  Pastor shares Saul's story of transformation. Paul understood the sin of the Holy Spirit because that was the path he had been on in his life. But then Saul has an encounter with God that changes him and he understands the immense patience of God and His amazing grace. Pastor closes with Romans 10:9-10 "If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved." God is good! The natural state of all things trends toward chaos. That process of degradation is broadly defined as “entropy.” Without the intervention of focused energy to counteract entropy, all things are continually breaking down, trending toward disorder. God not only offsets entropy but also creates order out of chaos. While God builds up, Satan tears down. While God's house “… is a house of order…” Satan's realm is confusion and chaos. While God is the Creator, Satan is the destroyer. Without intervention, entropy and chaos prevail spiritually and individually as well as physically and universally. Chaos, darkness, and death are all consequences of not keeping God's commandments. “Behold, mine house is a house of order, saith the Lord God, and not a house of confusion.” How blessed we are to have God's commandments. What safety, protection, and order come from keeping them.

And it always ends badly for those who get seduced into it.The Egyptian Pharaoh attempted to kill male Jewish babies, and his country was destroyed by God's plagues. Haman in Persia (modern-day Iran) plotted to exterminate all Jews in the kingdom, and he and his 10 sons were executed. In the 20th century, Hitler launched an attempt to annihilate the Jewish people. He died, and Germany lost World War II.There have been many more examples of enmity toward the Jews throughout history and yet the Jewish people continue to survive and even prosper.Anti-Israel, anti-Jewish hostility is inspired by Satan. How so? Satan is driven to thwart God's plan. So to exterminate the Jews before the coming of Jesus Christ, Himself a Jew, would be to foil God's promise of a Savior. To destroy Israel now would be to derail God's promise to save Israel and the return of Christ.Fundamentally, the lack of peace in the Middle East is about Israel's neighbors open hostility toward the Jewish people's presence. The Jews did not take back Israel through force of arms in 1948 but through declarations by Britain and the United Nations. No matter, the newly established State of Israel was attacked immediately by her Arab neighbors.This helps explain why Iran and its proxies across the Middle East, like Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, who although holding differing Islamic beliefs, are united by an unquenchable hatred and motive to destroy Israel.But it's not just the Middle East. The spiritual contagion of enmity toward the Jews and Israel has infected many in the West. The political and theological left, which are basically one and the same, are characterized by this. But what is troubling is that the political and theological right (i.e. conservatives) are succumbing as well. Notable influencers like Tucker Carlson, Candance Owens, and Nick Fuentes, along with many others, openly and loudly deride Israel and the Jews, asserting:The modern-day people in Israel aren't JewsThe Jews control America and the U.S. does Israel's bidding in the Middle EastThe Jews are the great corruptors in the world and seek global dominionIsrael is a genocidal oppressorEven if there was any truth to these defamations, none of it would cancel God's unbreakable promise: “God has not rejected His people, has He? Still more on the offerings for Shavuot - the lambs and the loaves. Namely, showing the lambs in the 4 directions, plus up and down, to demonstrate God's province of the heavens and the earth. Or alternatively, to acknowledge and pray that nothing bad befall the people, from any which direction. With parallels, of course, to lulav and the waving thereof. Plus, the fulfillment of mitzvot as a means of thwarting the Satan - unless taking that gleeful approach is taunting him or inviting him to challenge the person keeping the mitzvot. Also, 3 animal offerings that each need 3 mitzvot in accompaniment, with all the concomitant details - including waving while the animal is either alive or no longer so. Note that no sacrifice required all three of those accompanying mitzvot - usually, 2 out of 3. Plus, the question of whether the laying on of hands (semikhah) would be required.

One of the more unsettling truths we find in the Bible is that God is sovereign over everything, including evil spirits. Today we'll look at 1 Samuel 16 starting with God's choice of David to be king, but then we'll look at His choice to send an evil spirit to Saul. Not for the faint-hearted. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. 3 And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. 4 But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, “Where are you going?” 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.12 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.This morning we continue our walk through this amazing farewell discourse that Jesus has with his disciples. In just a matter of hours, Jesus will be betrayed, falsely accused, tortured, abandoned, and crucified. But before all these things take place, Jesus is preparing his disciples for what is to come. He wants them to be ready. And so the big question of our text this morning is…What does Jesus say to prepare his disciples?If we were to summarize Jesus's message to them in a sentence, I think it would be this: Hard times are ahead, but the Helper will come.So following that main idea, this sermon will have two parts: first, we will cover the hard times that are ahead for the disciples and what that means for us… and then we will spend the rest of our time considering that second part… the Helper to come.Part one: hard times are ahead.Part two: The Helper will come.1. Hard times are ahead.Last week we studied the end of John 15 where Jesus tells his disciples that the world will hate them because they hated him. And now Jesus tells his disciples how that hatred from the world will play out in their lives.First, in John 16:2, Jesus says,“they will put you out of the synagogues.”This means they will be outcasts among their Jewish kinsmen. They will be scorned and shamed for the sake of being associated with Jesus.And second, they will be killed for their faith in him. Again in verse 2, he says,“Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. They will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me.”We read in Acts 12 that the Apostle James was killed by the sword. And though we can't be certain about the details, it is believed that all of the apostles, except perhaps John, were killed for their faith. Why does Jesus tell them these things?Jesus gives two reasons here.First, in John 16:1, he says,“I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away…”And then again, in verse 4,“I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.”Jesus wants his followers to faithfully endure the hard times when they come.The Lord only knows what trials are before each of us… But Scripture makes clear that all followers of Christ will face persecution of some form or another… 2 Timothy 3:12,“all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.”And in Acts 14, Paul and Barnabas say to the disciples,“through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God”I've heard it said that everyone is either in a hard time, coming out of a hard time, or about to go into a hard time. And whether it's overt persecution, or some other trial of various sorts, Jesus wants you to be ready to endure!So how do we endure the hard times?We remember his words. In verse 4, Jesus says,“I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.”What a gift this book is to us! That we can read the words of Jesus to us! That we can cherish and store God's thoughts and God's words in our hearts! So that we can remember his words to us when the hard times come!When our son Daniel was just a few months old, he went through what the experts call a “sleep regression.” I didn't know what this was before becoming a dad… but it's essentially when your baby starts sleeping well through the night and then one day decides, “that's not my thing anymore.”And I remember several nights being so angry at our baby as he would get us up or not go back to sleep. And… he's just a baby, doing what babies do!And one morning I read these words from Psalm 119,“I remember your name in the night O LORD, and keep your law.”And this verse hit me like a truck… I was not remembering the LORD in the night as I was angry with our helpless baby. And so I committed it to memory. And oh how precious has that verse been to me during the rough nights! And while my nighttime frustrations have still not completely vanished… I now have a weapon for that fight.Our Cities Church Leader Affirmation of Faith has such a helpful paragraph about this … In Article 11 titled ‘Living God's Word by Meditation and Prayer' it says this, “We believe that faith is awakened and sustained by God's Spirit through His Word and prayer. The good fight of faith is fought mainly by meditating on the Scriptures and praying that God would apply them to our souls…”We can remember the story of Charles Spurgeon from last week… who was comforted in his depression as he applied the word of God to his soul… That's the Christian life! It is a daily fight of faith! And our weapons are the Word of God and prayer.So… When a tempting image pops up on your phone:“Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things, and give me life in your ways!” (Ps. 119:37).Or when a tension arises in your marriage or with your kids:“Put on then as God's chosen ones holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience…” (Col. 3:12).Or when that wave of anxiety or depression sets in:“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you…” (Isa. 26:3)As I mention scripture memory, don't hear this as simply another burden to add or a box to check in the Christian life, but consider this question:Am I making good use of the treasure of God's word? For he has given this gift to us that we may remember his words in the hard times.God has given us his word, and he has also given us His Spirit. And this leads us into part two of the sermon, which is where we will spend the rest of our time. In part one, Jesus tells his disciples of the hard times that are ahead, and now part 2…2. The Helper will come.Jesus tells them that the Helper will come.Look with me, starting at the second half of verse 4. Jesus says,“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?' 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. Surely this was the most pressing hard time for the disciples, because their Master was leaving. And Jesus says “it is to your advantage that I go away.”We can imagine the disciples saying, “how is it possibly better for you to leave us?!”The answer is the Holy Spirit.As Pastor Jonathan told us a few weeks ago from John 14, the Holy Spirit is the presence of Jesus in our lives. While Jesus is God who dwells with us… the Holy Spirit is God who dwells inside us believers! What a gift He is to us! God dwelling in us! Christ dwelling with us by His Spirit!He is the 3rd person of the Trinity, the Lord and giver of life, who eternally proceeds from the Father and the Son and is worshipped and glorified together with the Father and the Son and who spoke through the prophets.That's who the Holy Spirit is. And in this most anxious hour for the disciples, amazingly, Jesus comforts them with this promise of the Holy Spirit. We've looked briefly at who the Holy Spirit is, and in the rest of our time we will look at two things the Holy Spirit does…or the work of the Holy Spirit.Kevin DeYoung gives this great image to describe the Spirit. He says “the Holy Spirit is a spotlight.” He shines a spotlight on sin, and He shines a spotlight on Christ. So that's how we'll approach the rest of our text.The Holy Spirit shines a spotlight on sin.Look at verses 8-11,8 “And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.”Jesus says the Holy Spirit convicts the world concerning three things: sin, righteousness, and judgment. What does he mean here?The Holy Spirit convicts concerning sin. This is fairly straightforward: To not believe in Jesus is to reject God Himself and thus not believing in Jesus is at the root of all sin.What about verse 10? Jesus says, the Holy Spirit convicts “concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father.” As Jesus goes to the Father, The Holy Spirit will make plain that the world has committed the greatest act of unrighteousness of all time by murdering Jesus, the Righteous One. And lastly, verse 11, he will convict “concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.” 1 John 3:8 tells us that the “reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.” And on that last day Jesus will do that finally and climactically as He casts Satan, his minions, and all who follow him into hell.I have been praying that the Holy Spirit would do his convicting work in this sermon. If you do not believe in Jesus this morning I pray that the Holy Spirit would make the realities of sin, righteousness, and judgment plain to you: That you are a sinner in desperate need of salvation and that apart from Christ you will die in your sins and be separated from God in hell forever.And if you are a Christian, my prayer is that we would have a fresh gratitude for the convicting work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Because it is good when the Holy Spirit shines a light on our sin. And when he does, he also shines a light on our Savior.The Holy Spirit shines a spotlight on Christ.Look with me at verses 12-15,12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.Like any good teacher, Jesus knows the capacity of his students… I have plans to teach my son many things: how to read his bible, how to drive a car… We'll get there, but right now it's Don't throw your food. Don't hit other kids in the face!Jesus has taught his disciples many things and as he ascends back to the Father, the Holy Spirit descends to continue that work of teaching in his disciples and “to guide them into all the truth.” What does it mean that the Spirit will guide them into all the truth?First, this means the Spirit will guide them to understand the teachings of Christ. He will cause them to remember his teachings, and to understand them fully after Jesus is raised from the dead.And second, the Spirit will guide them to the Teacher himself… He is the Spirit of Truth who will guide them to the one who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.Look again at verse 14, Jesus says,“He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”The main job of the Holy Spirit is to point to another. To glorify another.To shine a spotlight on Jesus Himself.Theologian Fred Sanders says that studying the Holy Spirit can be slippery, meaning, when we try to focus in on just the Holy Spirit, we find ourselves inevitably being pointed back to Jesus. Because his job is to glorify Him!Sanders says this,“…even when the Holy Spirit opens our eyes to see and understand his work, what he primarily directs our attention to is not himself but Jesus Christ.”So when we consider the work of the Holy Spirit: He is a spotlight shining a light on sin and shining a light on Jesus himself.What does this mean for us today? If you are here and you're not a follower of Jesus… Scripture speaks of those who resist the Holy Spirit. I would urge you today… don't do that. Let the Holy Spirit shine a light on your sin and let him guide you to Jesus.Jesus who lived the perfect life that we all owe to God and who died on the cross as a substitute for his people. And who rose on the third day conquering sin and death for all who trust him. Believe in the Lord Jesus and be saved. Commit yourself to Him, and receive the Holy Spirit into your life!And if you are a follower of Christ, the end of chapter 15 says that the Holy Spirit bears witness to Christ, and He empowers us to do the same. This is what we see in the book of Acts…Disciples are filled with the Holy Spirit, and they boldly bear witness to Jesus. They can't stop talking about Him! And as we seek to be welcoming witnesses as a church, as we seek to invite others into this joy of knowing Jesus with us, oh how we need the Holy Spirit's help!And amazingly, in Luke 11 Jesus says,“if you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”Let's do that as a church! Let's ask for more of the Holy Spirit. More of his fruit in our lives, that we may be powerful witnesses to Christ in our homes, workplaces, and everywhere else we go. For the glory of Christ and our great joy in Him!
