Welcome back to the Brain Booster for another week. Thank you for supporting the show, it really is appreciated. From time to time people question me about my seemingly indifferent approach to ‘working' on the golf swing. And that all I want people to do is ‘just play' This couldn't be further from the truth as I have always believed that the key to great golf is a blend of swing efficiency coupled with a great mindset. I do not believe in endlessly dissecting your swing and obsessing over positions but I do believe in having a good understanding of what creates your SHOTS. It was with that in mind I wanted to welcome back a great coach from the USA and a big supporter of the podcast Kelvin Kelley to discuss how best to make your swing more efficient. We discuss: How the set up is the very best place to start making your swing more efficient. Why you can set up in a way to help you create a powerful impact position Feeling a dynamic impact position with an impact bag Hitting angles at address How to turn the switch to performance on the golf course Becoming a ‘shot detective' out on the golf course Letting the shot create the swing How your physiology affects your performance How your lifestyle dramatically affects your performance Some really solid and interesting concepts from a top coach Kelvin is a Class A PGA golf professional in San Francisco, California. He has taught at some of the top golf clubs in the Bay Area, which include The Olympic Club and Sonoma Golf Club. Kelvin was recently voted a “Top Instructor To Watch” by golf.com and has written several articles for golf.com and GolfWRX. Kelvin works with his students to develop an efficient golf swing. He welcomes golfers of all skill levels however is geared towards the more committed golfer. Besides swing and short game instruction, Kelvin is an expert in on and off the course coaching. This includes mental preparation, developing practice routines and course strategizing. The Myths and Misconceptions around what club fitting can ACTUALLY do for you and your golf. We go in a slightly different direction on today's Brain Booster but still with the underlying idea of looking at all avenues to improve your game. We are joined on the show by Nick Hibbs from Tour X who is one of the best club fitting experts in the UK. I have known Nick for many years and he is one of the game's good people with a genuine care for his clients and students. He has a warmth of personality that is infectious. Nick has worked with some of the top players in the history of the game such as Vijay Singh, Tom Watson, Bernhard Langer and Nick Faldo Players who were renowned for their depth of knowledge with their own clubs. He served his apprenticeship over many years on the European Tour and his technical know how of all aspects of club fitting is literally second to none. So what benefit can club fitting have as a Brain Booster I have often felt from a mental game perspective if you KNOW your clubs are 100% right for you then it is a great assist in calming the mind. In the show we look into Tiger Woods opinion on the value of a club fitting and how he sees it worth at least a QUARTER of a shot each round. How NOT to fall into the trap of adjusting your game to your clubs. Your clubs should fit YOU and YOUR game. As we have said so many times can you find out EXACTLY what will make you tick as a unique individual What a club fitting can and can't do for you Why a club fit is not just for better players How much does the shaft play a part in the performance of your shots? What is the latest technology with club heads? What is the actual process of a club fit? How will you actually benefit? How to hit the ball out of the middle of the club more often Wedge fitting or Driver fitting which should you go for? What are some of the myths and misconceptions with club fitting? A really thought provoking session that differs from many previous guests but nevertheless a really valuable contribution to your quest to improve. How you can use statistics to get the VERY best from your game What REALLY makes a difference to your scoring? Today we are joined on the Brain Booster with a wonderful guest in the shape of stat wizard Lou Stagner. A self-proclaimed ‘golf nut and data nerd', Stagner has become an influential figure in the golf data space by combining a lifelong passion for the game with his background as a business intelligence and analytics executive. He has a really strong presence on Twitter where he posts many valuable and insightful statistics to really make you think about your game. So many of us place undue pressure on our games because of the expectations we carry around with us. The perception of what is a ‘good' shot or a ‘makeable putt' is often completely distorted and out of touch with the actual reality of the game. The very best players in the world miss more putts than they hole from 8 feet. They miss 1 in every 3 greens. Yet we fall into so many perception traps that harm our state of mind on the course. We make poor decisions based on our perceptions of reality as opposed to the actual truth. We explore Why it is vital to know YOUR actual shot patterns and habits The biggest myths surrounding statistics How trying to find the ‘right side' of the fairway could be costing you lots of shots What are THE most difficult putts? The best strategy for par 3's, 4's and 5's What TIGER focused on at his very best The difference between a 90 shooter and a scratch player. It's not what you think. The often overlooked element of FUN and why it is so important to your game Such a great session with so much to get you thinking about your game To find out more about Lou go to   Lou Stagner (Golf Stat Pro) (@LouStagner) · Twitter https://twitter.com/LouStagner To become a CERTIFIED MIND FACTOR coach go to www.themindfactor.com

Today we welcome back onto the Brain Booster my good friend Vin Harris. The previous shows with Vin and the discussions around mindfulness have been so well received and I believe this one will be no exception. We get the chance to look at chaos, uncertainty and impermanence in your game and in the game of life. We seem to be living now in such a chaotic world. Nothing seems to be solid and reliable and the old models seem inappropriate. Uncertain economics, worrying international conflict. So many changes which can be really disturbing. Our thoughts can become so unsettled. We can end up in a ‘sea of thought' and this type of thinking can easily follow us out onto the golf course When our mind is so busy it becomes increasingly difficult to be PRESENT to the next shot in front of you. What can we do about it? How can we begin to have a different relationship to our thinking so we can NOTICE our thinking as opposed to being lost in the endless flow of images and sensations. Vin provides us with a CALM and SAFE voice of reason to help us navigate the uncertainty. When we make peace with the uncertainty things seem to settle down We look again at GRATITUDE and how this idea is not just a flaky concept but an essential element of great performance How to care without worrying How to get out of the way of ourselves How to basically be a better friend to ourselves both on and off the course. A wonderful session with a man who has trained with some of the foremost Buddhist and Meditation teachers over the past 40 years or so As always you will gain so much listening to the wise words of Vin Harris Vin Harris was involved in writing and editing “Mindful Heroes – stories of journeys that changed lives”. The authors share their inspiring stories of how mindfulness has been applied to a variety of setting across Education, Health, Business, Sport, Creative Arts and Community work.  The book includes Vin's chapter “Its Golf…but not as we know it: Golf as a mindfulness practice and a metaphor for life” and an introduction to the Sport section by Karl. Vin has offered to send listeners to the Brain Booster Podcast the eBook versions of these two chapters.  To claim your free chapters or if you want to learn more about Mindfulness for Golfers you can contact Vin by email vinharris.hkt@gmail.com For details of an annual golf week that Vin helps to facilitate go to Home - Fairway to Heaven (spiritualgolf.com) To become a CERTIFIED MIND FACTOR coach Come and join us either in Manchester or at the Olympic Club in San Fransisco Go to www.themindfactor.com

I absolutely guarantee you will find today's Brain Booster one of the most valuable sessions you have ever heard  from all the shows we have done. We are joined by top neuroscientist Dr Izzy Justice the author of GYRA Golf who works with numerous PGA Tour players on their mental game. Dr Justice explains how the most cutting edge discoveries in neuroscience can make a MASSIVE difference to your game and the execution of your shots. Our conversation moved in so many fascinating directions and many ‘missing pieces' were put in place for me with what he had to say. Izzy is the creator of the ‘Brain Trackman' a device that allows him to measure a golfers brain activity both before, during and after a shot. The Brain Trackman takes away the guesswork and gives us an actual concrete and factual insight into what our brain do when we perform well and perhaps more importantly when we get stuck and in our own way. During the session we looked at: The myth of ‘muscle memory' and how it is your brain that creates every single golf shot or putt How high brain wave frequencies are THE key reason why you do not perform at your best Alpha and Theta Brain waves as an entry point into the zone What ACTUALLY happens in your brain when you take a golf lesson and why you need to REALLY understand both learning and more importantly RETRIEVAL How Sleep is such a vital element to improving your game Why the way MOST golfers practice does NOTHING to help you in the retrieval process Why practicing AFTER you have played golf could actually be damaging your game Why PUTTING training aids are largely ineffective from a neuroscience perspective What you should be focusing your attention on to hole more putts Dr. Izzy Justice is a Sports Neuroscientist who has authored 8 books over the course of 30 years on the topic of Emotional Intelligence. He was the first to integrate EQ into sports and athletic performance. He has trained and certified over 300 coaches in EQ in a wide array of sports disciplines worldwide. He has worked with athletes, coaches, and teams in NASCAR, Tennis, Soccer, Golf, Lacrosse, Basketball, Triathlon, NFL, MLB, Olympians, and many collegiate level programs. Today on the Brain Booster with one of the legends of Skill Acquisition and Ecological Dynamics, Professor Keith Davids from Sheffield Hallam university We had a wonderful conversation a few years ago and we got the chance today to update the current position around skill acquisition and how this can benefit your game The problem with coaching models Over emphasis on body parts and what that does to the learning process The limitations of language The ecological perspective Adapting to and being in tune to your environment Solving the problem of the golf shot as a unique moment in time The myth of automaticity Repetition without repetition How coaches should constantly be setting players problems to solve How we should see the golf course as a series of puzzles to solve Dealing with and adapting to constant changes The extreme value of adaptability and how to perform on any given day What can rock climbing teach us about ADAPTABILITY As Keith says the very best athletes are the most ADAPTABLE How to engage your training in an ecological way As a Professor of Motor Learning in Sport & Human Performance, Keith uses an Ecological Dynamics framework for investigating skill acquisition, expertise and talent development in sport. He is an applied scientist who researches how processes of learning, development, performance preparation and participation in sport, physical activity and exercise may be facilitated. He reviews implications for coaching and teaching at elite, sub-elite and recreational levels of participants, as part of his work. Ecological Dynamics is an integration of Ecological Psychology, Dynamical Systems theory, Evolutionary Science and the Science of Complex Systems, considering individual athletes and teams as complex adaptive systems, self-organising under interacting constraints. Such systems change over different timescales, which has significant implications for learning, development and ageing in children, adults and elderly people. He has over 30 years experience of teaching and conducting research in Ecological Dynamics. On today's Brain Booster we welcome the originator of ‘Automatic Golf' Cameron Strachan. Cameron is an Australian coach who has produced numerous books and programs around the ideas of automatic golf and automatic learning. Most of what you're being told to do isn't working. And as Cameron likes to say, "Only around 2% of the golf population can make all the technical stuff work for them. Everyone else needs a better way". For the last 25 years Cameron has been writing and thinking deeply about the golf learning process. He has been on a mission to make golf learning easier and more fun for the other 98%. We discuss how he learned to play the game. A unique journey of self discovery Going from shooting in the high hundreds to sub par rounds without any kind of formal instruction. Then after this stellar progress he took some lessons and began to really struggle to implement the positional theories into his game. He got really bogged down with the theories and began to fall out of love with the game. Then the discovery of the ‘Inner Game of Golf' by Timothy Gallwey and how the ideas in the book transformed his approach to the game and led to a lifelong fascination with the learning process in golf. Cameron details the work he did with Aaron Baddeley on his putting. How he helped him to totally simplify his approach on the greens The concept became known as ‘Look and Shoot' Eliminating so much of the ‘noise' that can be created on the greens Occupying the conscious mind with some neutral focus to allow the body to take over This work culminated in Baddeley becoming the best putter in the world for a period of time in the early 2000's   How to take a more natural learning approach to swing issues Giving students problems to solve The ability to distract the conscious mind to let the genius of your body take over The power of really effective questions Drawing out learning from students The magic of SILENCE in a true learning environment How you can create a resilient golfer through effective learning environments   To find out more about Cameron Strachan and take advantage of his special offer for Brain Booster listeners Go to See - https://automatic.golf/brainbooster     Take ACTION and become a Mind Factor coach, go to https://themindfactor.net/the-certification-course/

Thank you for joining me on the Brain Booster and on today's show we have a solo session. I often get asked to do these episodes and I wanted to share with you a concept dear to my heart and one that I believe can be really valuable to you. Jordan Peterson has called it a ‘Noble Aim' Deciding what is important to you What is truly important about the direction you want your life to take So important that you are prepared to invest fully your time and life energy To get real clarity on this is SO important Yet once you have this clarity it is then vital that you ‘bury the goal' It seems a PARADOX Yet this is THE Key to improvement Because when you ‘bury the goal' you can then absorb yourself in TODAY To have the skill of ACCUMULATING GOOD days This sounds easy Yet VERY VERY few truly have the skill to do this We let the days drift by We don't make the most of the single opportunity THIS day provides To gain excellence at GOOD DAYS you need to understand the importance BEGINNINGS and ENDINGS The START of your day will determine SO much about the quality of your day What do YOU do in the first hour? Does it set you up for success? The devil is in the detail Be forensic about what you actually DO Not what you think you do but the actual patterns of your behaviour Make your habits TRULY productive in that first hour Do you get your brain ready to take on the day? Do you hydrate? Change the first hour of the day and you could potentially transform your world Start the day well You then have a chance to continue Can you embrace GRATITUDE? Can you get yourself to appreciate just how precious THIS day is? Endings Bruce Lee said  ‘Research your own experience' You can only research your experience when you REFLECT well Reflect well and consistently Specific suggestions to make the most of your reflections Be able to reinforce the GOOD things you do Adjust the elements that need to change The more consistent your reflections the better and more productive your ACTIONS will become What is your NOBLE AIM ? Do you have the right support around you? Do you have someone you can be accountable to? What is the value of a great MENTOR? Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by Performance coach and author Peter Arnott He was co author with Graeme McDowall and Ian Renshaw of the wonderful book ‘A Constraints Led Approach to Golf Coaching' Now with Ian Renshaw he has put together a fantastic learning program called ‘Swing it like Tiger' As we discuss during our time together the program is not really about any positions in Tiger's swing. It is much more about the LEARNING process that he employed to become one of the greatest of all time. We discuss How Tiger spent most of his early development on the golf course with coach Rudy Duran How he learned to create shots Created shots names and how this can help commitment Setting up ‘cues' to trigger his body into action The concept of ‘Tiger Par' and how YOU can apply that to your game successfully Building effective learning environments Situational training The influence of his father Earl Woods who had a background in the Special Forces How Tiger used his visual sense to enhance his learning The Number one SKILL to develop to become a better player How you can ‘tune in' to the golf club so much more Building a repertoire of SHOTS Giving the shots a name to cue your body So much of Peters work is around transferring your training into play How you can use technology more efficiently to transfer your learning? How better training can make you a more adaptable golfer? How can you best apply these ideas to your short game skills Peter also has some wonderful research from Scottish European Tour players about the pitfalls of incorrect training that is not SPECIFIC to what you require as a Tour Player A really great session Peter shared so many wonderful insights to really get you thinking about the way you apply yourself to becoming the player you want to be To find out more about Peter Arnott go to https://www.peterarnottgolf.com To find out more about the program go to www.swingitliketiger.com To book your Mind Factor workshop go to www.themindfactor.com To join us on the Mindfulness Retreat at Archerfield contact us at https://themindfactor.net/contact/

A very important distinction Which one are you? Once you get really clear on this your approach to the game can match your intention Get it wrong and you can be hopelessly misaligned Nick has spent a LOT of time with Sir Nick Faldo Why was he so great? The ability to blend the technical and the mental Nick makes a valid point about our ability to create the SHOT we wish has to be supported by the correct motion of the club and body How to best do this Working with your ego How to befriend and utilise your golfing ego What does that LOOK like practically ? How to use the ego to ask EFFECTIVE QUESTIONS Dealing with first tee nerves or being able to close out a tournament How to manage your ENERGY Can you become a REDUCTIONIST? Can you save time and energy to become a better player? The reduction of thought through habit Can you SIMPLIFY your golfing business plan? Shot indexing What is it? How can YOU apply it? Should a tour player have a coach as an employee or should he be a consultant? Today we have an extra special guest on the Brain Booster with author and spiritual teacher Rupert Spira. He is the author of numerous books including ‘Being Myself' and ‘Being aware of being aware' As a spiritual teacher he explores the concepts of ‘Non Duality' and the ‘Direct Path' to experience. He travels worldwide hosting retreats and teachings around the nature of being and experience. Today on the Brain Booster we explore many of the illusions surrounding happiness. We look deeply at what will ACTUALLY make us happy in sport and in life itself. Why there is a myth to the idea that winning or acquisition can make us truly happy and fulfilled in the long term. Why so many people achieve great results yet often they then feel a sense of disillusion. How the quest of acquisition can actually precipitate a crisis when we achieve our goals but yet still feel lost in the search for happiness and contentment. What DOES make us truly happy? How can we connect with our ESSENTIAL being? Rupert Spira has spent most of his life contemplating these questions and in that search has spent time and studied the texts of some of the world's great spiritual teachers such as Krishnamurti, Ramana Maharshi and Francis Lucille In our time together we discussed Why sport can reveal so much to us from a spiritual perspective How to be happy BEFORE results happen instead of being dependent on them and so vulnerable to poor outcomes How we can fit a spiritual enquiry alongside goals and ambitions What is ACTUALLY happening to us when we score a goal, win a tournament and achieve ‘success'. It is not what we think. How truly great sports men and women seem to channel a special energy and how observing great play actually lifts us all How opponents can actually be a wonderful assistance in revealing the best version of ourselves on the course What to do on a practical level to make your experience of your game a deeper and more fulfilling one. I had such a wonderful time speaking to Rupert and it became clear why he has such a following worldwide of people to find out more about the ‘direct path' to happiness To find out more about Rupert His books and his seminars and retreats go to www.rupertspira.com To book a MIND FACTOR workshop go to https://themindfactor.net/workshops/breakthrough/

The Provident Classic play off was against one of the game's true legends and tragic losses Payne Stewart. In the show Phil describes the intriguing mental game tool he used the week of his victory to turn his game around. He then went on to play on the Champions Tour winning his first event the AT&T Championship in 2009. At the weekend he went 36 holes without making a bogey to secure victory. Standing at 6ft 7in Phil is one of the tallest players to have played the PGA Tour After his playing career he went on to be a very popular analyst and on course presenter for the GOLF Channel During our time together Phil gave some wonderful insights to his development as a player. How he fell into the trap of being overly concerned with swing mechanics and the mental trap of perfectionism. The importance of the shot creating the swing in the moment How to be able to MANAGE and ADAPT in the moment with what you have today We also discussed ‘feeling good' to ‘play good' as opposed to waiting for the golf ball to make you feel a certain way. The relationship to the game and what Phil would have done differently How for a period of time his enjoyment of the game was taken away In his time Phil played with some of the greats of the game such as Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino but he makes a special mention around the legend that was Arnold Palmer and the incredible aura he had. The great Jack Nicklaus take on ADAPTABILITY and being able to adjust in the moment The development of Tiger Woods. How he trained to develop his mind with Dr Jay Brunza with what is known as ‘situational training' The use of hypnosis and meditation The blending of both ART and SCIENCE to maximise your game To conclude Phil makes THREE wonderful suggestions that you MUST hear To book your Mind Factor workshop go to https://themindfactor.net/workshops/breakthrough

We all need to understand the concept of impermanence and the role it plays in our ever changing human landscape. As much as we like to build the idea of safety and security at some point life will throw at us versions of impermanence. We will lose the job we love, the relationship we had will break down, our health will suffer. The nature of our existence is one of constant change. How we deal with that change is another matter. When we play sport we constantly have to deal with and confront LOSS. Be that the loss of form or the loss of a game or the loss of fitness. When we experience loss often our biggest challenge is our response. The way our mind reacts. Do we react or do we RESPOND? So today it is wonderful to welcome on to the Brain Booster Allan Flood the author of a wonderful book called ‘Perfect Misfortune' As Allan describes in our session together he was constantly living his life in either the past or the future. Then along came a major health issue. He found he had developed MS At first his mind went into overdrive trying to search for solutions. As he says he got lost in his own thinking. As time went on he learned to let his mind go quiet and allow wisdom to emerge. It is a fascinating interview with a really interesting man. Allan talks about the difference between the ‘how to world' and the ‘what is world' How we get so lost in the how to world. Focus, Commitment and Letting Go Forgiving of self in the moment The ability to love what you do in the moment How our ego needs self-importance to survive How to transform your game as opposed to just getting ‘better' A great session that you will gain so much from Get a copy of Allan's book Perfect Misfortune Go to https://www.amazon.co.uk/Perfect-Misfortune-Healing-Teachings-Principles/dp/1771434163/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1KTKXY4E1NL20&keywords=allan+flood&qid=1642603331&sprefix=allan+flood%2Caps%2C133&sr=8-1 To book a Mind Factor workshop go to www.themindfactor.com

Then more importantly how to bridge that gap. She talks about the vital importance of having a daily training or practice The importance of posture How many modern coaches mistake what is good posture How to use the ground more efficiently How to use your feet in the golf swing How we get lost in technical information at the expense of fluid motion Jayne Storey is a writer and coach who specialises in helping those who love golf and other sports overcome nerves, anxiety and mental interference so they can perform under pressure. Her training is known as Chi Performance (“Chi” denotes the Chinese word for the breath). Jayne can teach you some simple, proven PERFORMANCE PRACTICE methods which are trusted by hundreds of sports-people to help them release complex movement skills like the golf swing in a non-technical way. Jayne's approach is based on the Tai Chi principle that Stillness is the Master of Motion and uses traditional breathing, postural and movement practices to help develop a state of relaxed concentration sometimes referred to as the zone or flow. How we can learn to change our relationship to our thoughts. I have always believed in looking to other sports to see what we can learn to bring to our own sport. Often when we look outside the confines of our own world we can gain so much. So today it is great to welcome on to the Brain Booster Pat Flynn from the world of tennis. Pat's life story is an incredible one As a junior he was the Australian Junior Tennis Champion and went on to earn a scholarship at the University of Texas, Austin. After the college career he went on to play professionally, reaching 390 in the world and winning the Queensland Hardcourt Championships. After his playing career, he coached both on the professional tour and as a Tennis Australia state coach. More recently, his love of the game drew him back to competing, resulting in him becoming the Australian 50+ Seniors Champion and recently became one of the oldest players in the world to qualify for a Pro Tour Event, defeating a world ranked player in the process. Throughout his journey, he has had a passion for the importance of the mental parts of the game and how it can positively influence our lives both on and off the court. This passion later led Pat to seek out Dr Anthony Ross and undergo his MTT training and become a certified Mentally Tough Tennis Performance Consultant. We look into the importance of early development and the way to get the best out of your time What we can learn from the time intervals in tennis and how we can use these insights for our golf The ability to get back to the moment and to RESET for this point in this moment The importance of good body language and how the body is always talking to our mind The ability to have your attention on RELEVANT cues in the present moment Pat present a useful model of how the mind works Imagine the mind is made up of three parts: Automatic Thoughts and Feelings (ATFs) – The ATFs pop into the head and body automatically based on previous experience and genetic factors. They can be helpful or unhelpful. Wisemind – It quietly gives wise advice to act in ways that align with values e.g. Strive to Win and Improve. Enjoy the Challenge. Be Fair and Respectful. You – You decide how to act after listening to the ATFs and Wisemind. We look into the true principles of acceptance How you cannot instantly change the feelings you have in the moment but you CAN learn to accept those feelings and come back to the most relevant cues right NOW to get the job done. Today we welcome to the show Dr Bill Pettit How our thinking creates all of our experiences The Subtle nature of thought You are either in your thoughts or you are in your life …. This is such an important message for us all Bill has a fascinating story He spent over 20 years with the legendary Sydney Banks As he says himself ….. It was the weekend of April Fools' day in 1983 and in lieu of experiencing the pranks this day is known for, I was listening to a man called Sydney Banks talk about the spiritual nature of the human mind. Sitting in San Francisco that afternoon, I had hope awaken in me — hope that I could find a better level of mental health — and it lightened my heart and mind more than any practical joke could have. As I spent more time in conversation with Syd, l started to see incremental changes in how I navigated my closest relationships, and responded to troublesome emotions. I started listening to others with more respect and less judgment. I reacted less to anger and negative feelings. I began to trust that leaving my thinking alone when upset, allowed my mind to quiet and more often brought me to the feeling, and solution that I desired. It is a fascinating insight with Bill about being able to leave the mind alone Let it settle Do not always be trying to ‘fix' your thinking Trust your innate capacity for wisdom and insights It is a strong message for us all to follow You will find the experience of spending time in Bill's company a very gratifying one To find out more about Bill go to www.thedrspetitt Get a copy of the new book ‘The Lost Art of the Short Game' Go to www.thelostartofgolf.com To find out more about the Mind Factor go to www.themindfactor.com

As I said not the usual discussion you may find on most podcasts about golf Yet I am absolutely certain that our golf will always be a reflection of US We cannot help but bring ourselves with us to the golf course When golf is a means to try to quieten the ego When golf is so much of our identity When the outcome of a golf shot is like life and death The journey will probably be a miserable one Sam gives some great insights about our true nature The nature of our mind The nature of our being Many of the myths and misconceptions around the ‘mental game' The futility of trying to fix thinking with more and more thinking Why we fall into the trap of feeling we lack something The feeling we need to be and do more We discuss the wonderful concept of ‘utmost sincerity' A great session with a fascinating man To find out more about Sam go to www.samjarmangolf.com NEW APP - The Mind Caddie for IOS here: https://apps.apple.com/my/app/mind-caddie-play-better-golf/id1567910600 For Android here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mindcaddie.android

It is great to have back with us on the Brain Booster Steven Yellin Steven was an extremely popular guest along with his colleague Fred Travis. The book he has written is called ‘Simplicity' The title says it all and it is a direction we should all perhaps be moving more towards Steven's work is all about Fluid Motion The ability to access what you already have. The motion that is actually stored in your motor system. How many of us would be delighted to just be able to get to access what we KNOW we can already do? So many golfers instinctively know that what they bring to the golf course is only a fraction of their true capabilities In todays show we also explore how to actually change movements within the Fluid Motion philosophy. What trying to ‘change' is not always the best option. Why the desire to always be BETTER can sometimes really get in the way of any progress. We look at the best ways to coach beginners from a Fluid Motion How the brain incorporates the commands you give The vital role of the cerebellum and how to make sure you do not compromise its genius All in all a great episode which will really get you thinking Stevens book is called ‘Simplicity' NEW APP - The Mind Caddie for IOS here: https://apps.apple.com/my/app/mind-caddie-play-better-golf/id1567910600 For Android here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mindcaddie.android

Susie has been one of our most popular guests In the last show we talked about her book Golf from Point A and how it applied to your game. The idea of POINT A is so simple yet profound. When you play from Point A you play in the present You play with what you have TODAY You play the shot in front of you in a way that it has no past or no future It is simply at POINT A This shot in this unique moment in time. You get to trust what you have today Instead of hoping for consistency you develop adaptability The ability to get the best of what you have right NOW In today's session we take the idea of POINT A somewhat further We look at LIFE from Point A How can this affect your work, your business and just your life in general when you are able to play LIFE from Point A It is about deciding the person you are going to be TODAY What attitudes are you going to bring to the next 24 hours It is a wonderful way of maximising this day in front of you It ties in so beautifully with the ideas we have discussed on the Brain Booster of ‘accumulating GOOD days' More about Susie here: https://susiemeyersgolf.com NEW APP - The Mind Caddie for IOS here: https://apps.apple.com/my/app/mind-caddie-play-better-golf/id1567910600 For Android here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mindcaddie.android

He feels fortunate that for 23 years he was able to learn directly from Sydney Banks. In 2008 Dicken received a Certificate of Competency from Mr. Banks authorizing him to teach the Three Principles. Today we welcome back on to the podcast a great friend of the Brain Booster, Fred Shoemaker. Since spending time at his Extraordinary Golf School over twenty years ago Fred has continued to be an incredible influence on my coaching and my life in general. We had a truly wonderful conversation, an hour of time just literally disappeared. It was an absorbing conversation which hadn’t been planned in any way shape or form. We just bounced ideas of each other with a starting point of ‘what makes a great coach?’ As Fred discusses a great coach is NOT someone who is just spouting a formula. Not someone who is passing on just ‘information’. The latest theory of what is the correct method. Not a person who is assessing if a student is doing it ‘right’ or ‘wrong’. A great coach is someone providing an environment where a student can explore his or her own personal experience. To be able to gain genuine and beneficial feedback on what is ACTUALLY going on as opposed to what you THINK is going on. To increase awareness. We look into the nature of the mind and all the words and articles that have been written about it. Yet ultimately the question comes to a fundamental on ‘Do you have a mind? Or Are you your mind? Difficult concepts to get your head around They are some deep questions Challenging concepts Yet as Fred says to be able to recognise the difference between the ‘noise’ the mind is always creating and genuinely beneficial thought is a tremendous skill to develop and encourage. We talk about the dissatisfaction in the game and what is the root cause of this. Even given we are just coming through the worst crisis since the second world war many people are still finding so many ways to be dissatisfied. We look at the comparison game and why that is so destructive It was truly a wonderful session which you will gain so much from Fred’s website is www.extraordinarygolf.com To check out the programs with the Mind Factor go to www.themindfactor.com

Today on the Brain Booster we welcome a great friend of the show back for the THIRD time Kendal McWade from Instinctive Golf. We had a fantastic discussion as always. The golf world is talking again about Bryson after his win at Bay Hill in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Not only the win but THAT incredible tee shot across the water on the par 5 sixth hole. What could seem further apart than the scientific dissections of Bryson and the Instinctive Golf of Kendal McWades’ approach? Well maybe a LOT more than you think. I asked Kendal some questions and as ever he came up with some fascinating answers. In many ways Bryson is instinctive in the sense that he is very much doing it HIS way. He is on a quest of SELF MASTERY As we have reinforced so many times on the Brain Booster if there is a secret to golf it isn’t about finding the way to play the game but much more about you uncovering YOUR way to play. With this in mind I asked Kendal about some really important explorations The idea that most of the time in golf instruction we are focusing on the solution before we know what the problem actually is!! What is the TASK? How do I use the TOOL (the golf club) in my hand to get the task done? What are the key INFLUENCES I need to focus on to get the job done? Can I set myself free to uncover MY way of getting the task completed efficiently? Why FEEL is really the truth you are looking to experience. A really great session with an outstanding coach. This information helped guide me through the maze of golf instruction that was based purely on opinions that were based on assumptions of how the human body works. Many of you may remember Louis Oosthuizen and the RED DOT! Winning the British Open in 2010 The use of colour in performance has always fascinated me and today we welcome to the podcast John Glenn who will take that exploration to another level. How could the use of colour potentially transform your game? John has spent the best part of 20 years involved in the golf industry looking at ways to enhance learning and performance. In November 2016 together with PGA Professional Kevin Merry, they would spend a lot of time experimenting and look for a way to simplify how Golf was being taught, as they felt it was becoming too technical for many golfers. This would lead them to design and develop their very own Teaching Concept using a unique externally focused colour coded system that would prove to change the way people play, gaining instant feedback and fast track results. Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by Certified Mind Factor coach Michel Put (50) is a PGA Golf professional, certified Mindfactor coach,  entrepreneur, golfer, guide and organizer of various music events near Amsterdam. As a coach, he has been looking for the Holy Grail in golf instruction for over a quarter of a century. How to make golfers more consistent. Achieving more joy and happiness in their game.   In 2015 he came into contact with a concept that turned out to contain this holy grail. A concept with which everything that is complicated can be simplified. MOT, Moment Of Truth, since 2019 transformed into: True Groove | Het Nieuwe Golfen….The new way to play golf..   Unfortunately, as a cross thinker he was also denounced, mocked and even banned from the sports world. And the more he stood for his philosophy, the more he appeared to stand for it alone. Yet he also managed to find his way there. Because he says; "If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change."   Recently his company teamed up with Cobra/Puma golf. The concept of ONE Length golf clubs completes the philosophy of the method of True Groove | Het Nieuwe Golfen. And fits perfectly with our core values: innovative, fun, liberating and rebellious.   In this podcast When the light bulb was invented in 1878, the world was turned upside down. Candle manufacturers were angry, and many consumers were skeptical. In this podcast I am going to talk to Michel Put. Someone who comes up with a similar story some 140 years later. Together with Joost Steenkamer, colleague  professional and Dutch Golf Federation talent coach, he developed a new way of playing golf. And this time too the world is turned upside down. And this time too, people are angry. What did the gentlemen discover?   Listen to Michel's remarkable story and learn how to get more joy in your golf and in your life.   You will also learn in this podcast: The components of Deep Practice. I have known Marcus Bell a long time and it is always wonderful to chat with him about his approach to developing the game of golf. Marcus is a deep thinker and I know that you will find a tremendous benefit from listening today to some of his ideas. Marcus is Director of Coaching for ZEN Golf and a PGA Professional for over 20 years. His non-linear style of coaching is gaining wide recognition through his fast growing You Tube Channel ZEN Golf Mechanic. The results speak for themselves with a new student's lesson being posted each week showing huge improvements in performance for players of all abilities and aspirations. Marcus has a Masters degree in Sports Biomechanics and has conducted and consulted in many research studies in golf, particularly with 3D and forceplate technologies. These studies have focused primarily on lower body mechanics and their effect on full body kinematics and kinetics. It is this research that has supported the development of this full swing coaching application that we recognise as ZEN Golf Mechanics where ecological psychology meets sports biomechanics to foster optimal skill acquisition. For information on lessons please follow the link.... https://zengolfmechanics.youbookappointments.co.uk/ Marcus shares his incredible background in the game of golf and the people who have helped him along the way develop as a golf coach. This hugely reinforced a key theme of the Brain Booster. The importance of others and the people you surround yourself with. Who are you learning from? Who are your influences? What are you prepared to do to improve both as a player and as a coach? During the session together Marcus discussed his ideas around how movement is generated. How it is much more natural than we might think. How we often get in the way of this natural motion. And more importantly what you can do to reconnect with it. Five minutes to Gratitude. We have talked in the past on the Brain Booster about GRATITUDE. In the book I co wrote with Gary Nicol, ‘The Lost Art of Playing Golf’ we began the first chapter with a piece about the effects of gratitude. It would seem to be really clear the evidence suggests Gratitude is good for both you and your game. The response to the book has been amazing so I wanted to look at gratitude a bit more closely. So today we have coach Waleuska Lazo. Waleuska Lazo is the creator and founder of FMTG. Five Minutes to Gratitude. To the outside world, Waleuska had it all: A successful career, a loving family, and her health. For Waleuska her life was miserable. Having lost her marriage, sense of purpose, and on the verge of losing the relationships with her daughters, Waleuska knew there had to be a better way. Waleuska created a system that took her from her lowest of lows to live the life of her dreams. Easier said than done. Waleuska failed her way forward to find out what works, and as important, what doesn’t work. The end results? Five minutes to Gratitude When word spread of Waleuska’s “miraculous” results, she found herself sharing her FMTG experience with close friends. Today, FMTG is a thriving community of people from around the world who have transformed their lives for the better.   It was a really interesting talk with Waleuska and her insights can only be of benefit to your golf but more importantly to your life. To be grateful is to create a condition that ALLOWS success to emerge.   To find out more about Waleuska and the 5 Minute to Gratitude Experiment go to www.waleuskalazo.com To become a Certified Mind Factor Coach go to https://themindfactor.net/product/mind-factor-course-video-training-2019/

In today’s Brain Booster show we go in a slightly different direction. I have always felt that some of the most important ideas and concepts that I have used in golf have been taken from looking at other sports. We can become very singular in our focus if we only look through a singular sporting lens. We can be hemmed in the ‘culture’ of the game. To look to other sports is to see with a fresh pair of eyes. Today is a great opportunity to hear from and spend time with someone who has worked at the very leading edge of performance coaching Ric Moylan Ric is a performance coach and mentor for numerous world class athletes, including former WBA World Champion Scott Quigg. He previously spent 4 years working with Team Ricky Hatton. This included guidance and education for his young stable of athletes, whilst also working closely with Ricky for his highly anticipated comeback fight. Ric also has previously worked with fighters such as 2 x World Champion Ryan Burnett, WBC World Champion Tony Bellew, former WBA World Champion Anthony Crolla, former British and Commonwealth Champion Frankie Gavin and English Boxing Champion Nav Mansouri. Athletes as diverse as the ATP tennis player Liam Broady, the England Tug Of War team and UKBFF Champion Nina Ross have all worked with him for guidance and improvement in all aspects of their development and performance. In our time together we get the chance to look at: Your relationship to failure How do you respond to the inevitable setbacks on your journey to self mastery The role of fear in boxing and life How you can channel this most natural of emotions What living a ‘peak performance’ lifestyle actually looks like What are Ric’s key principles of success How speed can be trained The life benefits of boxing training Lessons from the special forces The lessons learned from being with great boxers It is a show I really enjoyed putting together. I am not surprised! It is a great resource and a genuine contribution to golf instruction. If you haven’t got a copy yet then do your game a favour and get hold of one as soon as possible. I promise it will make a difference to your understanding of the game. When I read the book it was clear that Adam had such a grasp of the role ATTENTION plays in developing your game. So few do. We spend too much time dissecting swing positions and too little understanding the unique role attention plays in both learning, retention and skill development. In our time together on the show we drill deep We dissect the possible options with attention We discuss The SIX potential points of Attentional Focus How the golf industry is skewed to focus almost exclusively on one at the expense of the others How you can use technology to identify how you as a unique individual can better utilise attention How the system ‘self organises’ around a clear intention How ‘consistency’ is not all that it is cracked up to be The counterintuitive role that ‘differential practice’ can play in your game How the physics of impact is the ONLY thing that matters to the golf ball I really enjoyed my time with Adam and a lot of his thoughts resonated with the concepts we cover in ‘The Lost Art of Putting’ Have a look at Adam’s work He offers some fabulous online programme Go to www.adamyounggolf.com to find out more Have you got YOUR Breakthrough Program yet? Tom Watson offered the phrase ‘When I learned how to breathe I learned how to win’ One of the legends of the game, 5 Time Open Champion and someone who finished runner up in the Open Championship at the age of 60. Former World Number One Justin Rose has talked about the importance of the breath in his own pre shot routine. Recently when Graeme McDowell won on the PGA Tour he was kind enough to say that a breathing focus on his putting that I had suggested to him had made a world of difference. Breathing such a simple activity but with profound implications. Today’s guest is Jayne Storey who has been on the Brain Booster before but has just recently released a tremendous book called ‘Breathe Golf’ I joked with Jayne during the show about ‘how can you write an entire book about breathing!’ When you listen to Jayne you will understand how the combination of understanding ATTENTION and the BREATH is so crucial to your performance. ‘Check in with your breath’ is not only useful for your game but vital for your life. In a world where we are permanently distracted this simple age old tradition can do wonders to take you out of the stress response with cortisol flooding your system to a place of CALM. How you can activate your relaxation response and get back to the state of mind that ALLOWS you to play your very best. As Jayne explains we cannot do movement whilst we think of movement We need to understand the mind-body connection and how we can release our capability The ancient disciplines of Martial Arts like Tai Chi and Yoga have known this for centuries. We are perhaps only now through the work of people like Jayne just beginning to wake up to the importance. As I often say in my seminars ‘Beware the simplicity trap’ Just because something sounds simple doesn’t mean it is simple to DO Checking in with the breath, committing to meditation This is a DAILY practice You don’t just ‘try’ it for a while you commit long term. Jayne Storey has committed her life to this work and you will greatly benefit from her words of wisdom in this show. Reflections of a great trip to China to host Mind Factor training for Chinese coaches. Whilst in China I had one of the key Mind Factor concepts massively reinforced. As I was walking through the streets in Beijing going towards the training academy I saw a number of people in a park making beautiful swirling movements. They seemed totally and completely engrossed in what they were doing. Deeply engaged in their daily ritual of Tai Chi. If you haven’t seen anyone doing Tai Chi it really is the most beautiful of activities. Yet as I stood and watched it reminded me that this wasn’t something these people did now and again it was a DAILY RITUAL. Not a new fad or fancy but a lifetime commitment to what they deemed beneficial to their lives. They had decided that Tai Chi for them was what made up part of a ‘Good Day’ ‘What does a GOOD day look like for YOU?’ Maybe this is one of the most profound questions we can as humans ever ask. What does a good day look like doesn’t mean that we indulge just in hedonistic self absorbed activity. What makes a good day doesn’t always involve what we find pleasurable in this moment. It may be a struggle to get the work done that you KNOW you need to do. It may be the training you do in the gym. It is the walk you decide to take It is the food you decide to eat or maybe more importantly the food you decide NOT to eat The ability to stay on track Staying on the path of mastery Trying to master something you will never master The state of mind that keep going with your daily rituals The paradox of breakthrough When you focus on today you get the opportunity for two kinds of breakthrough The joy of being absorbed in what you are doing today The conditions you create that ALLOW the bigger win further down the line The importance of beginning and ending How it is vital to start the day well and to end the day well What do YOU do at the start and the finish of each day? Are you giving yourself the best possible chance to create your GOOD DAY? A real good look at the importance of your DAILY RITUALS Make the day a GOOD one Have you got YOUR Breakthrough program? Oli uses the GEARS system up at Archerfield which is state of the art analysis of how your body is moving during the golf swing. If you get the chance to go to Archerfield then visiting Oli is a MUST Are you trying to make moves in your swing that your body just cannot support? Are you really aware of your own movement patterns? What are some of the most ineffective movement patterns that will hold back your game? Where do you need to have your attention in your swing to get the best out of your practice time? Is it better to make changes in your game with an IMPLICIT approach? In effect you get change without trying to consciously make changes Why Oli believes that we should not have swing ‘thoughts’ but swing ‘feels’ The need to get out on the golf course to train effectively What does a really good training session look like?   In today’s show we get the chance to spend time with Misha Botting. Misha is a Sports Psychologist who has coached the GB Olympic Curling Team. His insights are absolutely brilliant and apply to ALL sports. Misha has led an extraordinary life from being a ballet dancer to a great coach.   We have both been asked to contribute to a wonderful book called ‘Mindful Heroes’ and in our time together we discuss how the ideas and concepts within Mindfulness have played such a key role in Misha’s life. From his own experience of a particularly turbulent part of his own life to the application with his own students.   We look into the concept of ‘positive thinking’ and how this can actually be VERY detrimental.   How the standard psychology model of CBT can leave many athletes struggling with a mind that becomes extremely busy.   With Mindfulness we are not trying to change or replace thoughts but to have a different relationship to the thoughts we do have. We are not then fighting our own self.   There are SO many similarities with Curling and Golf How you have to be able to deal with uncomfortable feelings and yet still be able to put your attention in the right place to get the job done.   We talk about how you can feel really uncomfortable at times in your sport but how with a mindful approach you can come back to the task at hand. How you can develop the capability to ‘check in with the breath’ The simple idea of being able to come back to a place where great sport is played The PRESENT moment   The great idea that Misha presents today is the concept that you can and DO need to practice this in ALL areas of your life. In the car, at the gym, waiting in line, all of these ‘mundane’ areas have the potential to be opportunities to practice your mindful awareness Don’t just expect to be able to be mindful and present when you perform This has to be a DAILY ritual.   I really enjoyed my time with Misha and his really resonated with so many of my own.
