You wake up anxious. Your mind races. The to-do list grows longer, and even when you sit to meditate, stillness feels impossible.Sound familiar? You might not be meditating “wrong” — just not in the way your body truly needs. In this episode of Cultivating Inner Peace, host Anshu Bahanda speaks with Yirser Ra Hotep — a master of Kemetic meditation, Tai Chi, and Qigong — as he reveals how ancient wisdom from Egypt, China, and India offers a very different take on what meditation really is.Together, they explore how movement, breath, posture, and awareness are seamlessly integrated into daily life across these traditions — and how that can help soothe your nervous system, anchor your awareness, and bring you back to your body.If sitting still doesn't work for you, maybe it's not your fault. Maybe it's the method.

In this episode, I dive into the deep waters of goddess symbolism, cultural history, and healing. Drawing from the work of Maria Gimbutas, we'll explore the image of the ancient water goddess—The Mistress of Waters—and how her symbols, from birds to the simple V shape, reveal a worldview rooted in fertility, feminine energy, and creative expression.I also look at how these symbols arose in response to real challenges like drought, and how they remain relevant today in the face of chronic dehydration, climate crisis, and emotional overwhelm. We'll connect these ancient stories to our current relationship with water—as medicine, as spirit, and as a force for environmental awareness and personal healing.Along the way, I'll share how Marshmallow root, a humble but powerful herbal ally, can help restore moisture to both the body and the spirit. Whether you're called to protect water, deepen your health practices, or reconnect with the divine feminine, I hope this conversation brings insight and inspiration.Nourishing Marshmallow Overnight Infusion Recipe- 3/4 cup Dried Nettle Leaf- 3/4 cup Dried Lemon Balm Leaf- 3/4 cup Dried Marshmallow RootAdd herbs to a glass quart jar. Fill the jar with boiling water, cap, and let sit 8-10 hours. That belief in ourselves, and in the locus of something divine in all of us as human beings, echoes Dr. Felix Adler, founder of the Society for Ethical Culture in NY, who wrote that “the animating vitality” of every person can reach its highest level when these principles are most potent: 1) respect for all people; 2) kindness; 3) fairness; 4) honesty; 5) forgiveness. Thus, as human beings, we find our own “supreme being” within ourselves and reach our own supreme (state of) being. For “supreme being” is not a noun, but a verb. AI Helps Find Ancient Artifacts In The Great Lakes | An Artist Combines Indigenous Textiles With Modern Tech

Researchers in Michigan modeled a prehistoric land bridge and used AI to predict where caribou–and humans–might have traveled along it. Also, artist Sarah Rosalena uses Indigenous weaving, ceramics, and sculpture practices to create art that challenges tech's future.Using AI To Help Find Ancient Artifacts In The Great LakesAt the bottom of Lake Huron there's a ridge that was once above water. It's called the Alpena Amberley Ridge and goes from northern Michigan to southern Ontario. Nine thousand years ago, people and animals traveled this corridor. But then the lake rose, and signs of life were submerged.Archaeologists were skeptical they'd ever find artifacts from that time. But then John O'Shea, an underwater archaeologist based at the University of Michigan, found something. It was an ancient caribou hunting site. O'Shea realized he needed help finding more. The ridge is about 90 miles long, 9 miles wide and 100 feet underwater.“Underwater research is always like a needle in a haystack,” said O'Shea. “So any clues you can get that help you narrow down and focus … is a real help to us.”That's where artificial intelligence comes in. He teamed up with computer scientist Bob Reynolds from Wayne State University, one of the premier people creating archaeological simulations. And Reynolds and his students created a simulation with artificially intelligent caribou to help them make predictions. An Artist Combines Indigenous Textiles With Modern TechWhen multidisciplinary artist Sarah Rosalena looks at a loom, she thinks about computer programming. “It's an extension of your body, being an algorithm,” she says.Rosalena, a Wixárika descendant and assistant professor of art at the University of California Santa Barbara, combines traditional Indigenous craft—weaving, beadmaking, pottery—with new technologies like AI, data visualization, and 3D-printing. And she also works with scientists to make these otherworldly creations come to life. She involved researchers at the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab to make 3D-printed pottery with simulated Martian clay. And she collaborated with the Mount Wilson Observatory to produce intricately beaded tapestries based on early-1900s glass plates captured by the observatory's telescope, which women mathematicians used to make astronomical calculations. And that's also a big focus for Rosalena: spotlighting the overlooked contributions women made to computer science and connecting it to how textiles are traditionally thought of as a woman-based craft. When she first started making this kind of art, Rosalena learned that the Jacquard loom—a textile advancement in the 1800s that operated on a binary punch card system which allowed for mass production of intricate designs—inspired computer science pioneer Ada Lovelace when she was developing the first computer program. “[They] have this looped history,” she says. “And when I weave or do beadwork, it's also recalling that relationship.”But for Rosalena, there is tension and anxiety in her decision to combine new and ancient mediums. “We're at this point of the technological frontier and that's actually terrifying for a lot of people, especially for people from my background and my Wixárika background,” she says. “It's progress for some, but it's not for all.”Part of Rosalena's work is anticipating future forms of colonization, especially amid rapid change in our planet's climate and the rise of AI. “What happens when we bring traditional craft or Indigenous techniques with emerging technology to think about current issues that we are facing? Digital technologies are always chasing after ways that we could simulate our reality, which also produces this way that we could re-envision our reality,” she says.SciFri producer and host of our podcast Universe Of Art D. Peterschmidt sat down with Rosalena to talk about how she approaches her work, why she collaborates with scientists, and how she hopes her art makes people consider today's technological advancements through an Indigenous lens.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Gospel Spice

Welcome back to Gospel Spice, the podcast that adds a little spice to your everyday walk with Jesus! I'm your host, Stephanie Rousselle, and I am beyond excited for today's episode featuring the delightful Kristi McLelland. She is a well-known and loved Bible teacher, frequent Israel traveler, and Professor at Williamson College where she focuses on teacing the Bible from its historical, cultural, geographic and linguistic contexts. Needless to say, I love her work, focus, and mission! She is known for her outstanding Bible study, Jesus and Women. But now, she also just released one of my favorite books of 2023, Rediscovering Israel. If you like history and want to understand Israel in general, and Jesus in particular, through the lens of history, geography, language and culture, then this is the book for you! May I even suggest, it would be the perfect Christmas gift for someone you know! This conversation invites you into a powerful prayer journey. Learn how to embody the word of God, not just know it, as Kristi shares her deep insights from her study in Egypt and Israel. Discover the communal nature of Scripture and why it's important to be feasting saints, embodying and feasting on the word of God. Kristi and I also discuss the significance of the intertestamental period, and Jesus' celebration of Hanukkah. We explore the Jewish roots of the scriptures and the transformative power of prayer and embracing abundance. I love how Kristi McLelland appreciates the Jewish roots of the Scriptures. The intertestamental period between Malachi and Matthew is a focal point of our conversation. Kristi brilliantly compares it to preparing a nursery for Jesus' birth. It's all about setting the stage for Jesus' arrival.  Kristi McLelland's study of scripture in Egypt and Israel was a life-changing experience. She emphasizes the importance of embodying the Word rather than just knowing it. We must be "feasting saints" rather than just "reading saints." The communal nature of Scripture for the Jewish people teaches us the importance of embodying and feasting on the Word of God. As the conversation progresses, I get to connect my love for Jewish culture and food, highlighting the connection between the French language and the delightfulness of God. It's all about the senses and embracing the abundant goodness of our Creator! The imminence of God for the Jewish people is awe-inspiring. He's present in their history, in the temple, and in every aspect of their lives. Such a powerful reminder of His intimacy and closeness. In the same way, prayer is not just a passive act; it's an invitation to participate in God's restoration and renewal. Our prayers should have hands and feet, actively engaged in transforming the world around us. The Western culture's scarcity mindset is challenged in this conversation. There's an alternative philosophy of abundance that allows us to be generous and give our lives away. We have a heavenly Father who is abundantly generous to us! Living in abundance instead of scarcity allows us to move freely and lightly through the world. It's a powerful witness to those around us. We have been saved into a family and community that thrives on abundance. The resurrection is the ultimate proof of abundance. It opens the door to endless possibilities and invites us to embrace the fullness of life in Christ. What a game-changer! Jesus often surprises us and does things differently than expected, but His transformative power remains unmatched. “Tikkun Olam,” the repair of the world, is an invitation for us to actively participate in God's work. Prayer is more than just a conversation; it's a partnership with God's plans, actively contending and co-laboring with Him. The Lord's Prayer is an open invitation to actively participate in the ushering of God's kingdom here on Earth. Let's not settle for passive prayers; let's engage in bringing heaven down to earth! Kristi shares a powerful message about how walking closely with Jesus can lead to a transformation from scarcity to abundance. We discuss the importance of prayer and getting involved in repairing the world. Prayer is not just about words but an invitation to actively participate in restoration and renewal. Kristi emphasizes the philosophy of abundance and how it allows us to live freely and generously, shining as lights in a world of scarcity. We'll learn about the concept of yada, intimate knowing, and how it can deepen our relationship with God. We'll also explore the cyclical nature of time in Middle Eastern culture and how God reaches back in time to heal and restore broken things. This conversation is a reminder that our prayers are not limited to mere words. They're an embodiment of our desire to be involved in what we're praying for. Let's pray with intention and act with conviction. Join us as we journey together through the pages of Scripture, uncovering hidden treasures and expanding our knowledge and experience of God. Get ready to be challenged, inspired, and equipped to live out your faith with hands and feet firmly rooted in the abundance of God's love. So grab your favorite beverage, get cozy, and get ready for an episode that will ignite a fire in your heart and draw you closer to the heart of Jesus. Don't forget to follow us on social media, because trust me, you won't want to miss out on the Christ-centered content we'll be sharing. Let's get started with the delightful Kristi McLelland on today's episode of Gospel Spice! Key takeaways from this conversation 1️⃣ Embodying the Word: Kristi emphasizes the importance of not just knowing Scripture, but embodying it. She draws upon biblical figures like Deborah, Ezekiel, and Jeremiah, who spoke about eating and embodying the Word of God. As Christians, we are called to be feasting saints, not just reading saints. 2️⃣ Prayer as Partnership: Prayer is not simply a request to God, but an opportunity to actively partner with Him in the restoration of the world. Kristi highlights the Jewish perspective on prayer, viewing it as contending with God and actively participating in bringing prayers to pass. Prayer should have hands and feet, actively engaging in the fulfillment of what is prayed for. 3️⃣ Abundance over Scarcity: Western culture often operates from a mindset of scarcity, resulting in competition and disunity. However, Kristi presents an alternative philosophy of abundance, rooted in the understanding of God's generosity. Living in abundance allows us to move through the world with sufficiency, generosity, and a powerful witness to others. MEET KRISTI MCLELLAND Professor. Teacher. Biblical Culturalist. Kristi is a professor at Williamson College and serves as a biblical culturalist. She has a Masters in Christian Education from Dallas Theological Seminary and has dedicated her life to teaching people how to study the Bible. After studying in Israel and Egypt in 2007 and discovering that God is better than she ever knew, Kristi has been teaching the Bible through a Middle Eastern lens, in its historical, geographical, cultural and linguistic context. Kristi encourages believers to be postured to receive what God is saying, which is best done through communally experiencing Scripture. Kristi teaches about the goodness of God, experienced through table fellowship, practicing hospitality and collaborative wisdom. During her years as a professor at Williamson College and Director of Christian Education and Women's Ministry at local churches, Kristi has taught and shepherded thousands. Since 2008 she has led biblical studies trips to Israel and studied and trained under Dr. Jim Martin, Rabbi Ken Alpren and world-renowned Israeli archaeologist Dr. Gabi Barkay. Kristi's trips to Israel, Turkey, Greece and Italy, along with her Middle Eastern Lens classes, help Westerners study and appreciate the Bible as it was written by Middle Easterners in a Middle Eastern context. This lens offers a deeper look into what the biblical characters meant in what they did, said and wrote. This enhanced understanding of the biblical framework positions us to better open our eyes, ears and hearts to the Living God who is constantly pursuing us. Kristi is available to assist churches, colleges, organizations and other groups in discovering the Bible through a Middle Eastern lens. https://www.newlensbiblicalstudies.com/ We invite you to check out the first episode of each of our series, and decide which one you will want to start with. The BreakPoint Podcast
Did Ancient Cultures Believe in a “Third Gender”?

The BreakPoint Podcast

An argument cited often by propagators of transgender ideology is that ancient cultures across the world recognized so-called “third genders,” those who did not fit neatly in categories of male or female. If they recognized this, the argument goes, then so should we.   The latest video in the What Would You Say? series engages this claim carefully, refuting it with three simple points. It begins by explaining the roots of the argument:  "According to advocates of transgender ideology, because so many ancient cultures recognized 'third' genders, we should reject the 'gender binary,' the idea that only two genders exist, and we should reject the notion that gender is essentially linked to one's biological sex. …   Among the most cited examples of 'third genders' are the Native American 'Two-spirit,' Thailand's 'Kathoey' (a word regularly translated as 'Ladyboy'), the 'Sal-zikrum' of Ancient Middle East, the 'Fa'afafine' of Samoa, the 'Hijra' of India, and the 'Muxe' of Southern Mexico."  If a handful of people throughout all human history and culture are proof that biological sex is fake, what do we make of the fact that the rest of the world throughout all human history and culture knew that biological sex was real? To suggest these cultures' understanding of “gender” bore any resemblance to today's transgenderism is to impose our culture's categories on theirs. I believe the term for this is “cultural appropriation.”  "The label 'third gender' is an anachronism forced upon people who actually presumed the reality of biological sex, gender roles, and the so-called 'gender binary.' For example, the word 'Fa'afafine,' used in Samoan culture, means 'in the manner of women.' In Samoan culture, a Fa'afafine was chosen by his family at a young age to help his mother with household tasks, often because the family had no daughters. This boy was not considered a wife or mother but was assigned responsibilities often performed by women."  In other words, the Samoans and similar cultures have never claimed that young boys who might perform stereotypically “female” duties at home are actually female.   But even if that were their claim, it leaves open the central question Matt Walsh dedicated an entire documentary to asking: What is a woman? That unanswered question is at the heart of a modern contradiction.    "Like these so-called 'third genders,' modern transgender ideology also relies on the 'gender binary' that it claims to reject."  "At its root, the modern concept that someone can be 'transgender' or “born into the wrong body,” depends heavily on rigid male and female stereotypes. If a little girl likes trucks or short hair or dislikes dresses, she must be a boy. If a boy likes pink or dressing up or playing house, he is really a girl. In other words, transgender ideology contradicts itself, promoting the very male and female stereotypes it claims to overcome."  Incoherence aside, capital-T Truth exists, regardless of which people-groups throughout history believed in it. So, even if ancient cultures did believe modern ideas about women, gender, or sex, that does not make their ideas any more true or any less absurd.  "Ancient cultures didn't always get it right. While some ancient cultures allowed or even expected some men to act like women, and vice-versa, many others didn't. To assume that only those cultures got it right is to make what is known as the 'noble savage' mistake. Imagine someone suggesting that because some cultures allowed slavery or cannibalism, we should too. That would be outrageous!"  A Christian worldview is big enough to handle the biological realities of male and female, while also allowing for and celebrating the beautiful variety of individual men and women.  "While the roles of males and females look different from one culture to the next, the biological reality that humans are male and female does not. That's been obvious in every culture until ours, and Genesis tells us why:  Because 'God created man in his own image, in the image of God He created him. Male and female He created them.'" Dylan and I discuss the Industrial Revolution and how it has made us all similar to the "fitless humans" in the movie Wall-E. Between the habit of poor positioning when we scroll on our phones on the couch, to education systems keeping children sedentary, our society as Americans is quickly headed towards poor health and, possibly, a lifetime of pain. This is especially pronounced for those with disabilities, who may lack the language and cognitive capacity to fully understand how to address and communicate pain, manage pain, and strengthen themselves with the human body armor that is muscle. Can people with disabilities still benefit from good nutrition, lifting heavy things, and a life similar to that of the Hadzabe tribe? Hell yeah, they can! We just have to be willing to do it ourselves. Challenges of the Week: 1. Continue to walk for 30 minutes, 3 times per week. 2. Choose a habit you'd like to change, and simply carry around a notecard or notepad to which you'll tally off whenever you engage in the habit. 3. If you are religious about your Apple Watch, try taking it off for an entire day and make note of what you feel. 4. Sit on the floor, with your back unsupported, for 10 minutes while you're watching a TV show or answering emails. 5. Please leave us a review! Egypt was a valuable province to Rome, with natural wealth and successful agriculture. Thanks to an arid climate there's also a number of preserved papyri from that era, providing modern scholarship with an invaluable paper-trail on the administration at the time. One papyri has led to the belief that Augustus confiscated lands of the Egyptian temples, and ultimately the decline of Egypt's religions. Andrew Connor is the author of Confiscation or Coexistence: Egyptian Temples in the Age of Augustus published by University of Michigan Press. Guest: Dr Andrew Connor (Lecturer, Centre for Ancient Cultures, Monash University)
