Welcome to RIMScast. Your host is Justin Smulison, Business Content Manager at RIMS, the Risk and Insurance Management Society.   Justin interviews three RISKWORLD attendees at RISKWORLD 2025. They are first, Audrey Trim of Thomson Rivers University, second, Lucy Straker of Beazley, and third, François Beaume of Sonepar and AMRAE.   Audrey Trim shares information about her career and her experiences at RISKWORLD and on the Board at BC RIMS. She introduces the Second Annual Coast to Coast Risk Management Legacy Challenge for Canada and tells how student teams can compete.   Lucy Straker describes the growing risk of political violence and active assailant events, and what insurance products are needed on top of general liability. She offers strategies for preventing and mitigating violent events.   François Beaume presents the 17th Annual AMRAE RMIS Panorama, a survey of vendors and risk managers, with insights into the software and technology available to corporate risk teams. The Panorama and data sets are freely available online in French and English at the link below. Listen in for a glimpse of the variety of education at RISKWORLD. Be sure to save the dates May 3rd through the 6th for RISKWORLD 2026 in Philadelphia.   Key Takeaways: [:01] About RIMS and RIMScast. [:16] About this episode of RIMScast, coming to you live from RISKWORLD 2025 in Chicago. There are so many topics and perspectives to cover! [:40] RIMS-CRMP Workshops! RIMS is co-hosting an intensive four-day program, which is your gateway to achieving two prestigious certifications, the DRI Certified Business Continuity Professional (CBCP) and the RIMS Certified Risk Management Professional (RIMS-CRMP). [:59] This workshop will be held from May 19th through the 22nd in collaboration with DRI International. Links to these courses can be found through the Certification page of RIMS.org and this episode's show notes. [1:14] Virtual Workshops! On June 12th, Pat Saporito will host “Managing Data for ERM”, and she will return on June 26th to present the very popular new course, “Generative AI for Risk Management”. [1:31] A link to the full schedule of virtual workshops can be found on the RIMS.org/education and RIMS.org/education/online-learning pages. A link is also in this episode's show notes. [1:42] We're at RISKWORLD this week, but preparations are already underway for the RIMS ERM Conference 2025 on November 17th and 18th in Seattle, Washington. RIMS is accepting educational session submissions through May 20th. [2:00] The best submissions will address current and future challenges facing ERM practitioners as well as provide leading practices and concrete takeaways for a diverse audience of risk professionals from industries or organizations of varied sizes, disciplines, functions, and roles. [2:16] These include officers, leaders, managers, and students. The link to the submission form is in this episode's show notes. [2:26] Of course, mark your calendars for November 17th and 18th, and I'll be sure to alert you when registration opens. [2:34] RISKWORLD 2025 was one of the highlights of the 75th Anniversary of RIMS. We had a fantastic time here at McCormick Place in Chicago. We've got a lot of perspectives that we're going to cover! [2:47] Our first guest is the Responsible Use of Space Coordinator in the Risk Management Department of Thomson Rivers University in British Columbia and a Board Member of BC RIMS. She is making her RISKWORLD and RIMScast debut. [3:04] Audrey Trim is here to tell us about her experience as a first-time attendee and the 2025 Coast-to-Coast Risk Management Legacy Challenge, which was a big draw among the students at RIMS Canada 2024, and we expect that to possibly outdo itself in 2025. [3:24] You could sense the energy on the exhibit room floor on Day 1 of RISKWORLD. Let's get to it! [3:32] Interviews! Audrey Trim, welcome to RIMScast! [3:38] On RISKWORLD Day 1, Audrey enjoyed the Matha Stewart opening keynote. It was a great, inspirational show. Audrey has taken in some great sessions. She's looking forward to some educational seminars. This is Audrey's first RISKWORLD; it will not be her last! [4:57] Audrey explains her job title, Responsible Use of Space Coordinator. She oversees the non-academic space, among other things, on the Thomson Rivers University campus. She focuses on the best use of the space in a responsible way. [6:07] In earlier roles, Audrey worked on the 2014 Tim Hortons Brier in Kamloops and was an Event Coordinator for the City of Kamloops. She also coordinated a Buskers Festival. Then she fell into risk management, and she's loving it. [6:28] Audrey joined the Risk Group at Thomson Rivers three years ago. She became a BC RIMS member and now serves on the chapter board. Audrey is on the organizing committee of the Coast to Coast Risk Management Legacy Challenge, working with the SA RIMS Chapter. [7:01] This is the Second Annual Coast to Coast Risk Management Legacy Challenge for Canada. They will try to outdo the premier year. The Challenge involves students in teams of four from universities across Canada. [7:31] The teams get a case study and compete for the top two spots. The top two teams will get a chance to present their findings at the 2025 RIMS Canada Conference, which will be in Calgary, Alberta, from September 14th through 17th. [7:50] This year, Ken Letander, Case Study Champion, owner and Founder of Strat First Inc., a Canadian risk management firm, has chosen the case study topic: Reporting, Set Aside, Spend: Indigenous business joint venture, ethical dilemmas, and program integrity benefits. [8:15] It's going to be a big draw. Audrey hopes lots of teams apply. Ken Letander and others will judge the entries. [8:45] Audrey describes the passion and thought that went into the submissions to the 2024 Coast to Coast Challenge. The winning submission developed a tool to measure health equity across the province. The tool was given to the Fraser Health Authority to use day-to-day.  [9:35] The Coast to Coast Challenge is open to students across Canada. One of the members of the winning team last year changed her direction from business to risk management, because she had such a great experience at the conference and during the case study. [10:38] Apply to join the Coast to Coast Risk Management Legacy Challenge by May 24th. The case study will be assigned on May 30th. Each team submits a 10-page report. The judges will pick the top two teams to present at the RIMS Canada Conference 2025. [10:55] A link to the submissions page and contact information is in this episode's show notes. [11:16] Audrey's advice to anyone considering attending RISKWORLD 2026: “Know where you're going and how to get around the conference. Also, curate your sessions. There are a lot of options here. Pick out the ones that will have an impact on you and teach you something great.” [11:35] “There are so many networking opportunities. Take advantage of those. Get out there. Don't be afraid to try new things!” [11:39] RIMS Canada 2025 will be held from September 14th through 17th in Calgary. Registration will open soon. Audrey says, “Do it! The RIMS Canada Conference was a great opportunity to meet people and network!” [12:20] Plug Time! RIMS Webinars! We are back on May 22nd, with GRC, a TÜV SÜD Company, and their newest session, “Asset Valuations in 2025: Managing Tariffs, Inflation, and Rising Insurance Scrutiny”. [12:36] On June 5th, Zywave joins us to discuss “Today's Escalating Risk Trajectory: What's the Cause and What's the Solution?” [12:47] On June 17th, Origami Risk returns to present “Strategic Risk Financing in an Unstable Economy: Leveraging Technology for Efficiency and Cost Reduction”. This session was rescheduled from May. If you were already registered, you do not need to take any action. [13:03] More webinars will be announced soon and added to the RIMS.org/Webinars page. Go there to register. Registration is complimentary for RIMS members. [13:15] Spencer Educational Foundation's Grants program is starting soon. Spencer's goal to help build a talent pipeline of risk management and insurance professionals is achieved, in part, by its collaboration with risk management and insurance educators across the U.S. and Canada. [13:34] Since 2010, Spencer has awarded over $3.3 million in General Grants to support over 130 student-centered experiential learning initiatives at universities and RMI non-profits. Spencer's 2026 application process is now open through July 30th, 2025. [13:55] General Grant awardees are typically notified at the end of October. Learn more about Spencer's General Grants through the Programs tab of SpencerEd.org. [14:05] On the 7th of October, the New Jersey RIMS Chapter will return to the beautiful Fiddler's Elbow Country Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, for their Annual Charity Golf/Pickleball Event. [14:18] Registration is open, and the event proceeds are used to fund the chapter's Spencer and Kids' Chance Scholarships. It was the filming location for the upcoming movie sequel, Happy Gilmore 2. For more information and to register, please NewJersey.RIMS.org. [14:42] My next guest was a panelist on several RIMS webinars. I was delighted to see her, so we could record this special segment live at RISKWORLD 2025. She is Lucy Straker. She is the focus group leader for U.S. Political Violence & Deadly Weapons Protection at Beazley. [15:00] We will talk about the trends she's seeing in her area of practice. [15:06] Lucy Straker, welcome to RIMScast!  [15:29] In 2016, Beazley looked at the landscape as it relates to terrorism and active assailant events and realized that traditional insurance options weren't providing sufficient solutions for its clients. Beazley created a product and a marketplace around active armed assailant events. [16:02] Lucy says what you see in the media is a fraction of what's happening. The media report the biggest and worst events. The risk is far higher than what is reported in the media. [16:31] Violence and shootings have increased. People are now more aware of the risk and are trying to respond to it through insurance products and legislation such as California's SB-553, with much more focus on preventing these events from occurring. [16:54] We want to avoid workplace violence before it becomes something. A lot of clients think they already have coverage for workplace violence in their traditional general liability insurance. [17:19] Recently, general liability carriers have put exclusions on their products for AMB, firearms, weapons, or the expected or intended injury exclusion found in a traditional ISA form. [17:38] Lucy says clients need to be aware that there is a potential coverage gap. A misconception among clients is that none of them think they will have a shooting. They're in denial. When there's a shooting, you hear, “I never thought it would happen to me!” [18:03] We're at a stage where gun violence is so prevalent in the U.S. that you can't argue you didn't think something was going to happen. You have to plan and prepare for the worst-case scenario. [18:28] Lucy advises risk leaders to buy coverage to help them cover the gap. They do not have to be alone. With most shootings, there is a warning sign. There is a trail. There are things to do to prevent it. [18:52] As a company, protocols have to be embedded from top-down and bottom-up. The company has to communicate every plan and procedure to its employees. Employees have to be trained and retrained. This is not something they're going to be thinking about every day. [19:09] You have to engage with your security team. You have to screen people. You have to screen the company. You have to create a culture of reporting. People are not going to report something unless they feel comfortable reporting it. You need to have anonymous reporting. [19:24] You need to instill a culture in your company of “See something, say something, report it.” It could be someone coming in and acting funny, or someone posting on social media, “I'm going to go carry out a shooting.” [19:46] More often than not, if someone's going down a path to violence, there are signs. They don't just wake up one morning and say they're going to go carry out a shooting. There are warning signs, and we want to catch them before it becomes something more material. [20:13] There are different lines of coverage and ways that coverage can respond, such as active assailant forms. Think about your business and other areas of your business you might not have thought about. Lucy mentions the United Health Care CEO being shot off the premises. [20:38] It was a targeted event. Were there warning signs online by Luigi, the perpetrator? How can you identify those threats? Make sure you have risk management and preventive measures in place. Think of the litigious landscape. We're now seeing more nuclear verdicts. [21:02] People always want someone to blame. You've got to make sure that, if something happens, you're doing right by the people to try and eliminate and reduce that liability on the back end. [21:15] RIMS Plug! The first of hopefully many RIMS Texas Regional Conferences will be held in San Antonio from August 4th through the 6th, 2025. This groundbreaking event is set to unite the Texas RIMS Chapters and welcome risk management professionals from around the world. [21:35] Guess what, folks! Registration is now open! The advance rate is available through May 16th. A link is in this episode's show notes. You can also visit the Events page of RIMS.org to register. We look forward to seeing you in Texas! [21:51] Let's Move to My Final Guest, François Beaume, The SVP for Risks and Insurance at Sonepar and the VP of AMRAE (The Association for Corporate Risk and Insurance Management)! [22:16] François Beaume is here to discuss the findings of the 17th Edition of the RMIS Panorama that AMRAE produces in association with and with the support of several groups, including RIMS. [22:36] François Beaume, welcome back to RIMScast! [23:02] AMRAE has the 17th Annual Edition of the RMIS Panorama available. In 17 years, the most significant evolution in risk management information system offerings has been the integration of advanced technologies like AI, automation, and data visualization. [23:57] These add-ons transform the software from a pure data management tool to a much more sophisticated platform that provides productive analyses and real-time risk monitoring to enhance decision-making capabilities and processes in a wider scope of topics. [24:40] Panorama is a collection of surveys. One survey focuses on vendors and one survey focuses on risk managers. François says there is still room for improvement in this solution. Progress has been made on flexibility and integration capability, with changes to come. [25:12] François sees a need to guarantee the success of such solutions, train users, and provide support to users to streamline how they use the system. Vendors receive feedback to provide customizable solutions, enhanced integration capability, training, user clubs, and more. [26:07] Interconnection is a key area of these tools. With APIs, modular architecture, and code-based solutions, more and more, these tools can connect with other risk management information systems. Some corporations have several risk management systems. [26:45] There are more and more interconnected features in these systems, to allow the risk manager and all the teams involved in the use of the risk management programatics to extract the most important benefits from the use of the tool. [27:04] ESG is a key area where this matters more and more. In Europe, there is a strong push for ESG compliance that requires corporations to gather and manage a huge volume of data that, when organized, is helpful to fuel the risk management processes. [27:33] The report evaluates 52 solutions in four functional categories, covering 17 functional modules and 14 technical modules to allow you to compare and assess the value of the solutions and if they are compatible with your company's technology for audit, risk, and more. [28:22] AMRAE is looking at the functional scope and the depth of the features that are offered. Is the scope well-covered? They are looking at technical capabilities; is it easy to integrate a solution? Is it scalable? How is the user interface? What can the admin customize? [28:45] AMRAE also gathers user feedback and testimonials from using a given tool in real life. That feedback provides robust data capabilities, seamless integration capabilities, and more user-friendly interfaces that will benefit the users of the tool. [29:36] RMIS vendors use AI in predictive analytics of historical data. Risk management is gathering and dealing with historical data linked to risk management topics to anticipate future risks. [29:59] Vendors use AI to automate workflows and streamline data from the field and validation from the stakeholders, reducing manual intervention and increasing confidence in the data quality. All data will be analyzed more easily with AI and integrated into interactive dashboards. [30:34] Dashboarding has improved over the past year to provide more interactive dashboards for better risk insights and risk decision-making processes. [31:10] François has advice for risk managers looking for RMIS software. His most valuable advice is to use the RMIS Panorama. It's freely available to anyone. You can get it in French or English. Besides the Panorama PDF, there is an online platform that allows customization. [31:48] The entire data set from the vendor and risk manager surveys is freely available online. You can customize your analytics of the data based on your use case. [32:32] François speaks of captives and the evolving reinsurance market. The market today is favorable toward captives, a powerful tool for improving corporate risk management and the way corporations are living with ESG. There is a strong push in Europe for captives. [33:22] François has seen the creation of about 20 captives in France. Corporations need captives in the risk management process and risk financing optimization. [34:00] Special thanks again to all of our guests and all of the RISKWORLD attendees who made this year's RISKWORLD Conference so very special. Links to RISKWORLD coverage are in this episode's show notes. [34:13] Mark your calendars for May 3rd through the 6th, and join us at RISKWORLD 2026 in Philadelphia. [34:20] Plug Time! Episode 89: Bar Partnerships: A Conversation with Mary Jane Pickens

The ALPS In Brief Podcast

In this mini episode of ALPS In Brief, our Bar & Affinity Partner Strategist Rio Peterson sits down with Mary Jane Pickens, Executive Director at the West Virginia State Bar to discuss the importance of bar partnerships, how they create value for members, and the pivotal role bars play in the legal community. — Transcript:  Rio Lane:  All right. Hello everybody. We are back for another mini-installment of the ALPS in Brief podcast. I am your host, Rio Lane, and I am talking today with Mary Jane Pickens, who's the executive director of the West Virginia Bar. Hi.  Mary Jane Pickens:  Hey, how are you?  Rio Lane:  I'm good. How are you doing?  Mary Jane Pickens:  Wonderful. Very, very happy to be back in Montana. It's a beautiful, beautiful place.  Rio Lane:  Wonderful. Yes. Thank you for joining us. I'm happy you're here too. I love Missoula. It's such a lovely city.  Mary Jane Pickens:  It is. It's fun. We went out and just took a quick walk this morning, and it's a wonderful little place. Lots of good stuff here.  Rio Lane:  It is. It absolutely is. Yeah. So tell me a little bit about yourself, Mary Jane. What's your background, and how did you come to the Bar Association?  Mary Jane Pickens:  Well, I've done a lot of different things. When I first became an executive director, I went to one of the ABA annual meetings, and they had us a boot camp for brand new executive directors, and you had to pick out a song. It was an icebreaker thing, and they would play your song and you were supposed to jump up and say, "That's my song." And my song was Long and Winding Road by the Beatles.  Rio Lane:  Oh, nice.  Mary Jane Pickens:  Because I felt like I had had a rather long and winding road to get to the bar. I graduated from law school. I went to Ohio Northern University, so I did not go to law school in West Virginia. Came back to West Virginia because it's my home, and went into private practice in a small firm, kind of a little boutiquey... We mostly did bankruptcy work. And did that for about 15 years and decided I needed a change and had an opportunity to go to the Insurance Commissioner's office in the state of West Virginia. And shortly thereafter, became general counsel for the West Virginia Insurance Commissioner. And I was there for about 11 or 12 years. And then I went to a large firm, did mostly government relations and lobbying mostly around the insurance industry.  Rio Lane:  Yeah.  Mary Jane Pickens:  Did that for about three years. And then because I love public service, it's where my heart is, I had a chance to go back to the state and be the executive director of the West Virginia Board of Risk and Insurance Management, which provides all of the property and liability insurance for the state of West Virginia, and also simultaneously be the Deputy Cabinet Secretary for the Department of Administration, which provides all the back office-y stuff and services for the rest of government.  Rio Lane:  Oh, wow.  Mary Jane Pickens:  And I was able to be acting cabinet secretary during 2016 during Governor Earl Ray Tomblin's last year, and then had a chance to go to the state bar, and that's where I am now. So it's kind of a long and winding road.  Rio Lane:  Yeah, yeah. That's really interesting. And you've been at the bar for two years?  Mary Jane Pickens:  Yes. I hit my two-year official mark on July 1.  Rio Lane:  Oh, congratulations. Congratulations.  Mary Jane Pickens:  Thank you.  Rio Lane:  Yeah. How are you liking it? Do you find it's a lot different than what you were doing before?  Mary Jane Pickens:  It is a lot different. It's still considered a state agency, but it's in the judicial branch. I've always been in the executive branch, so there's a lot of differences there. But it still is that public service feeling like you have constituents, you have customers, and you're there to help folks. And so that's what I love about it.  Rio Lane:  Yeah, that's fantastic. How do you find working with a board? Because I know you've got a board of folks that helps guide things. Yeah. Do you find that to be helpful, or do you find it's different than...  Mary Jane Pickens:  Well, we had a board at the Board of Risk and Insurance Management, but they were very different. They were rather hands-off.  Rio Lane:  Oh, okay.  Mary Jane Pickens:  So this board is a lot more engaged, which I think is a good thing.  Rio Lane:  Yeah.  Mary Jane Pickens:  We only have four quarterly meetings, but we have very, very involved officers and a very evolved executive committee. So I like it a lot. I think it's... We run the office and we do the day-to-day, but the president of the state bar speaks for the bar. So there's a little bit of separation that I enjoy, and so I feel like I have a lot of really good guidance and support and feedback from the board. I enjoyed it a lot.  Rio Lane:  That's fantastic. You find the board helpful in identifying things that the bar needs to be focusing on like new challenges that might be coming up, things that need to be anticipated?  Mary Jane Pickens:  Yeah, I do. We're on the ground, kind of on the front lines with our members, so we hear a lot and get a lot of those ideas. But our board is elected from 16 different districts all over the state.  Rio Lane:  Got it.  Mary Jane Pickens:  So they come together, and so they're bringing ideas and concerns from the lawyers in their areas because West Virginia is an oddly-shaped state. It can be... When you go to the eastern panhandle, you're almost in Washington DC, and then at Ohio and Kentucky on the other side. So the interests and concerns can be different in those different parts. So the board, I think, is very good at gathering that intel and bringing it back to Charleston and helping out with what we do in the office.  Rio Lane:  Yeah. Oh, that's fantastic. It sounds like a good working relationship.  Mary Jane Pickens:  It is. It's very good. We have a really good board.  Rio Lane:  Yeah. Oh, that's fantastic. So what are some of the things that maybe your members or the board has brought to your attention that are challenges that you find you're having to navigate this year and the next couple years?  Mary Jane Pickens:  Sure. We here... And I don't think this is uncommon among states. We have a lot of rural areas. We have basically a few... What we consider by West Virginia standards to be decent-sized cities. But there are a whole lot of areas that are what we would consider to be legal deserts. And I think a lot of states have the same issue. So the issues around the rural practitioner, the solo practitioner that's just out in a county where there's not that many people, we need to provide more support to those folks.  And we have put together a rural practice committee, and we're trying to address some of those things, ideally in conjunction with the law school, because the law school at West Virginia University is there to produce lawyers for the state of West Virginia, and elsewhere, but we love it when they stay. And so we're hoping to come up with some ideas to support those lawyers more that are out there actually helping the people. Another big issue, and this is huge right now in West Virginia, and I don't know how this is in other states, but we have a desperate need for lawyers to do guardian ad litem work and abuse and neglect proceedings.  Rio Lane:  Okay.  Mary Jane Pickens:  And a lot of this does come out of unfortunate circumstances around drug use and abuse and families that are really struggling. And we have a lot of children in foster care. And last year... We do regional meetings. We go all around the state in the fall, and we had judges come to all of those regional meetings and speak on pretty much whatever they wanted to talk about. Every single one of them made a desperate plea to the lawyers in the audience to consider taking on guardian ad litem work or doing abuse and neglect legal services because it's such a big need.  Rio Lane:  Oh, wow. And is that something that is funded by the state, those services? Or is it...  Mary Jane Pickens:  It can be through the Public Defender Services Agency, which is an agency I'm very familiar with because it's part of the Department of Administration. So yes, there are public defender corporations around the state that they kind of have some interaction with. And also they just handle appointed work in the public defender system. So they're involved in a lot of that, but it's not enough to meet the need. And you get into these rural counties, and a lot of times the lawyers that are in those counties are the judge, the prosecutor, and the public defender. They're the ones that are there, and you need some others out there. So it all kind of comes together. The challenges kind of overlap.  Rio Lane:  Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. And do you find that you having a membership that's aging out as well? Is that also something that you're navigating?  Mary Jane Pickens:  A little bit. We're an old state. I mean, generally speaking. Virginia's rather old, and I don't know that it's really getting any younger. So that is a concern. One of the things that... We're planning our annual meeting for 2025, and one of our speakers that we've lined up is going to talk about generational differences and the fact that law firms and lawyers who are more seasoned need to be a little bit more open-minded about younger lawyers and what their expectations are and how to meet their needs and keep them in the state of West Virginia.  Rio Lane:  Yeah. Do you find that something that the bar is having to navigate too, is new members, younger lawyers coming in and navigating their expectations and how they want to engage with the bar?  Mary Jane Pickens:  I think so, and that's something that I would like to be able to spend more time on. I don't know that we've gotten very far on that. We do have a young lawyer section, and it has its own board, and so they're kind of on the front lines of that addressing the needs of younger lawyers. But it's something that I think we do need to work on, and I think I probably need to spend more time on that.  Rio Lane:  Yeah. And it's challenging too, as technology shifts, trends shift, needs shift, etc. I mean, I think we could all safely say that upcoming generations do not engage in the same way that past older generations do. I mean, even for myself, I grew up with... I didn't have a computer until I think I was in my 20s. So yeah, it's definitely a new challenge I think that I'm hearing quite a bit about, actually, is how to navigate that. Yeah. What's your membership size? How many...  Mary Jane Pickens:  We have probably, if you counted every single type of member, we would have probably between 8,000 and 9,000, which sounds like a lot. Active in-state lawyers is probably closer to 44, 4,500.  Rio Lane:  Got it.  Mary Jane Pickens:  So we have inactives, active, not practicing. There's all kinds of different membership statuses. But the actual lawyers that are on the ground in the state of West Virginia licensed and practicing is about 4,400 probably.  Rio Lane:  Got it. Got it. Okay. And do you know how many of those are older, how many skew younger, and what that break down is? It's okay-  Mary Jane Pickens:  No, not off the top of my head, although there is a lot of interest in that kind of data, and our IT director has put that type of information together for our Supreme Court and others who have asked for it. So I think it's safe to say, even without having the numbers in front of me, that it's an older group.  Rio Lane:  Yeah. Yeah. Fair enough. I want to shift a little bit, talk about partnerships. And so the bar obviously has partnerships with different kinds of organizations, sometimes vendors, sometimes different groups. What are some of the things you look for in a partner that wants to work with the bar?  Mary Jane Pickens:  I think the most important... The thing that makes the relationship, I think, the most valuable and work the best is having a really good understanding of what each other do, or each other does, I guess.  Rio Lane:  Yeah. Do, does. Yeah.  Mary Jane Pickens:  And I think just using ALPS as an example, I mean, it's purely kind of by accident, but it's fortunate that I do have the insurance background. It helps a lot because I think I understand certainly the regulatory environment and what an insurance company has to do and the things that they focus on and things. And risk management. At BRIM, we were the risk manager for the state of West Virginia, so I have that mindset, so I think that helps. I think it also helps for your partner to have a good understanding of what you do as a bar, not just selling a product to your members, but understanding, again, what your challenges are, what your members need, what their expectations are. I think it's really helpful to have a partnership with an entity that understands what we do. Strategically, what our goals are, what our mission is, that sort of thing.  Rio Lane:  Yeah, absolutely. I think that kind of helps too when it comes to helping then support your members, and able to provide content or information where maybe there's gaps or that you need a little boost in.  Mary Jane Pickens:  Yeah, absolutely.  Rio Lane:  Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. I always like to think about partnership as a much more dynamic... Just much more beyond, well, tell them that we're great and we'll sell to them.  Mary Jane Pickens:  Right. Right.  Rio Lane:  Yeah, it's definitely a team effort, and it's important that values and ideas align.  Mary Jane Pickens:  It sure is. And actually just last week, I got a call from a lawyer in Raleigh County, West Virginia, and he was an older gentleman, and he was closing up his practice. And so he was just looking around for guidance on, what do I do? And the state bar is an agency under our Supreme Court of Appeals, the Office of Disciplinary Counsel is there and the Board of Law Examiners also. We're separate agencies, but all combined, regulate the practice of law on behalf of the Supreme Court. So I said, "Well, why don't you call ODC, the Office of Disciplinary counsel? I'm sure they've got some guidance. I know they've got some information on succession planning on their website," but I didn't have at my fingertips specific information to give him. So I reached out to Mark Bassingthwaighte.  Rio Lane:  Yeah.  Mary Jane Pickens:  He very kindly, and less than 24 hours later, sent me some checklists and a client letter sample and that sort of thing. So I was able to very quickly turn that around and send it to our member in Raleigh County, which I think was probably very helpful. I think it was exactly what he's looking for.  Rio Lane:  Yeah. Yeah. Oh, I love that. I love that Mark was able to help with that.  Mary Jane Pickens:  Oh, yeah. Yeah, he's great.  Rio Lane:  He is. He's fantastic. Yeah, he's an incredible resource. I think we're all very lucky to have him.  Mary Jane Pickens:  Yeah.  Rio Lane:  Yeah. So would it be safe to say that your experience with ALPS as a partner has been a positive one?  Mary Jane Pickens:  Oh, it sure has. ALPS helps support our regional meetings, which are very important to us. That's our chance to actually get out of Charleston and go to these places and meet these lawyers where they are. Those are really important to us, and I think our membership really enjoys that, and ALPS helps us in that area. Chris Newbold was able to help us with our strategic planning session last fall, and we were real happy how that turned out because it's doable. I mean, we ended up with a one page, which we loved, because the one before was several pages, and it was very colorful and it had graphs and it had arrows, and it was great looking. But we ended up with something short that really, really, really focused on the things that were achievable over a reasonable period of time, and that we enjoyed that experience. So it's just all kinds of things like that as part of the whole partnership that we've enjoyed.  Rio Lane:  Yeah. Oh, I'm really happy to hear that. It's very important to me that a partnership is a good working relationship, and then we're both supporting each other in success because it's not a zero-sum game. It's like, yeah, support the members, support the profession, support each other. Yeah, that's good. So I'm really glad to hear that we're doing that. Yeah. That's fantastic. So I think we've got just a couple more minutes, but I wanted to ask you, what are some, not necessarily challenges, but things that you see kind of coming up on the horizon that you predict maybe the bar or the profession has to... Will have to navigate?  Mary Jane Pickens:  Well, one of the things that is kind of swirling around out there, we're a mandatory bar.  Rio Lane:  Right, yes.  Mary Jane Pickens:  So we're not a voluntary bar. We're mandatory. You have got to be a member of the West Virginia State Bar to practice law in West Virginia. So there are the issues around mandatory bars that you all are probably familiar with. And we try very, very hard to stay on the right side of that line where what we do is germane to the regulatory job of what we do.  Rio Lane:  Yes.  Mary Jane Pickens:  But I think that there's a constant pull because we also want to do charitable events, and we want to support all of our members regardless of their backgrounds and where they come from. And some of those areas can get a little... Have been blurry in other jurisdictions and have resulted in some lawsuits and things. So I think that's a challenge for us is a mandatory bar. And we're always watching out for that because we want to serve our members and do what we're supposed to do, but we also want to make sure that we're on the right side of that doing what we're supposed to do line. So I mean, that's one of them. Some of the others, I think we've kind of mentioned the generational stuff.  Rio Lane:  Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I'm not surprised to hear that either. There's been numerous instances the last few years when a mandatory bar has run afoul of certain things and was deunified, so yeah. Yeah. And that's definitely a challenge, but yeah. Okay. Well, awesome. I think that's really all we got, all we have to chat about, and I really appreciate you coming and just chatting with me, and hearing about the bar and about the partnership and everything. Yeah. So thank you so much.  Mary Jane Pickens:  Oh, I appreciate it. This was a great opportunity. Thank you so much for asking me.  Rio Lane:  Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Happy to have you. And at some point, folks, I will be back with another little mini episode of In Brief. But in the meantime, enjoy your day.

When it comes to any process, there have to be several components. This is no different in developing your perfect quote process. We discuss in this week's blog: insurance Quoting Process to gain customer loyalty. The first component of the process is building rapport. Building rapport consists of taking the time to introduce yourself and explain why they should do business with you. This needs to be summed up in about a minute and a half of the conversation. Building rapport consists of fact-finding in a conversational way, looking for common ground, looking for opportunities to build relationships, and building trust. Building rapport must feel like a genuine conversation between two "friends." We want this process to be different from any other that they have been through to this point. You must assume that you are one of many quotes they have called to get for their insurance needs. You must look for ways to set yourself apart from any other competition. Our feelings and experiences are the primary reason we have challenges Cross-Selling Insurance Policies at Renewal. We are afraid of a NO, of upsetting the customer, and we often assume that the client is in a hurry. Maybe a client has gotten upset over price, so we think now is not the time to ask for more. More often than not, we decide how the client will respond by answering the question in our head, not by asking the client the question. That means - we are having the conversation with the wrong person! We need to engage the client to get cross-selling going. In the APP Agency Retention Program we also talk about how you are often more worried about price or changes to their policy than the consumer. We want to help remove some of the fears of cross-selling and give you the confidence to “Just Ask”!  Read more in this week's Insurance agency blog: https://www.agencyperformancepartners.com/blog/how-to-cross-sell-insurance-at-renewal/

Cyberattacks are a growing threat to organizations of all types and sizes. It's no surprise that surveys of executives' top concerns show cyberattacks among the risks most likely to keep them up at night. While cyber insurance is available in the traditional insurance market, the types of coverage and limits available don't always match up well with organizations' real exposures. Enter captives as part of the solution. To that end, Aon Global Risk Consulting recently announced its Cyber Captive Program, a program meant to help organizations use their captives to better address their cyber risk exposures. In this episode of Leff Communications Rethinking Risk podcast series, Peter Mullen, chief executive of Aon Captive and Insurance Management, discusses the Cyber Captive Program and how it can help companies address cyber risks. Critically, the program begins with helping organizations develop a thorough understanding of the nature of their exposures. From there, organizations can potentially use their captives to assemble needed limits, transfer cyber exposures to the reinsurance markets, and shape coverage that fits an organization's needs as its cyber exposures evolve.
