San Diego Comic-Con delivered one of the biggest news weekends of the year, and we're digging into all of it on this week's AIPT Comics Podcast. We break down DC's latest Next Level announcements, including new ongoing series for Vixen, Static, Batman, The Demon, and Jonah Hex, react to Marvel's Predator vs. Punisher, unpack Christian Ward's newly announced Pandemonium, and even talk about Ryan Gosling's surprising Ghost Rider reveal. If it made headlines at SDCC, we're giving it the full AIPT treatment. After that, David sits down with Christian Ward to discuss Forever Home, his ambitious new Oni Press series with Sami Kivelä. Ward explains how the story grew from a simple yet unforgettable premise: a house that survives climate collapse by falling outside of time, where every 20 minutes inside equals a year in the outside world. The conversation explores the book's emotional family drama, its retro-futuristic design, climate anxiety, billionaire bunkers, and why Kivelä's storytelling elevates every page. Ward also reflects on balancing writing and art, teases what's next in his career, and shares why Forever Home is one of his most personal creator-owned projects to date. Spider-Man Brand New Day Review Spider-Man is terug en hoe. This Week on the Toy Power Podcast; even though we are Celebrating our 10th Year of Podcasting; we unfortunately exhausted all our energy on the Previous SDCC Reveals & Announcements Ep. So we are giving you a ReIssue episode instead from the Vault. (Originally Posted as Ep #143 - from October 2019). Original blurb: It’s a very special ep as we’re joined by not one, but two of favourite guests in Davey Damaged and Scotty so that’s right – it’s a Homer episode! Trent takes us through a vintage retrospective look at The Addams family by Playmates. Perfectly timed for Halloween, we wonder what could have been with this short-lived line and look to the future of the franchise as a new movie approaches. What characters didn’t get made, which ones make the camera glow and where does MC Hammer fit into it all? We make the jump to Show and Tell as Davey tries to trump us all with a purchase so large, we doubt it will actually fit in his toy room! There’s some DC, MOTU and even Final Fantasy options to choose from. Frank gives a lovely tribute showing that sometimes, the value of a toy; lays in more than its sticker price. Then it’s Quiz time and with Davey onboard, anything is possible. To say this episode goes off the rails is putting it mildly – but on the plus side we learnt that Trent can’t hold his liquor, Ben thinks photos record sound, Space Jam was an event and Rick Moranis is Trent’s muse. So hold on for this crazy ride that also serves as a farewell for one of the team…Support the show: http://patreon.com/toypowerpodcastSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ryan Reynolds took a bet on Portland. Four years later, his Aviation American Gin Tasting Room — once hyped as a "Disneyland for adults" — has permanently shuttered its downtown doors. Parent company Diageo is blaming "evolving business needs" and a broader spirits slump, but the real story writes itself: when Hollywood money packs up and leaves, the city has a problem that goes well beyond beverage trends.Under Mayor Keith Wilson, Portland's downtown has hemorrhaged tenants, businesses, and residents at a pace that should alarm any serious civic leader. Crime, homelessness, and commercial real estate collapse aren't abstract policy debates — they're the daily operating conditions that killed this bar and will kill the next one. Aviation Gin's production has already relocated outside Portland city limits. The money read the room before the headline did.Sean breaks down the corporate exit, the broader decline in alcohol sales, and why Deadpool is apparently more resilient than downtown Portland's business district. Breweries are shuttering, residents are surveying relocation options, and the gap between what progressive city leadership promises and what investors actually experience keeps widening. This week on Science Faction, life milestones collide with pop culture as Ben celebrates finally paying off over two decades of student loans while Devon contemplates a lifetime of payments. The crew also dives into Star Trek, Mothership, San Diego Comic-Con reveals, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Cowboy Bebop, and an unexpectedly deep rabbit hole exploring the technology behind the original Jurassic Park. As always, it's a mix of real life, science fiction, and everything wonderfully nerdy in between. Real Life Ben reached a major milestone this week by finally paying off his student loans after 21 years. It's the kind of accomplishment that deserves a celebration, especially considering how many people are still carrying student debt decades after graduating. Devon balanced out the optimism by joking that he's probably never going to finish paying his off. Steven has been spending time with Mothership: Wages of Sin, another adventure for the acclaimed sci-fi horror RPG. If you're interested in checking it out, you can find it here: https://www.tuesdayknightgames.com/collections/mothership Ben also finds himself in an unfamiliar situation: waiting on absolutely nothing. Instead, he talked about his latest favorite gadget, the Clicks Keyboard for smartphones: https://www.clicks.tech/powerkeyboard The Star Trek discussion continued with Star Trek: Axanar – The Gathering Storm, where Faran Tahir's appearance was a welcome surprise. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFpTiIHNTJ0&pp=ygUGYXhhbmFy That naturally led into Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4's episode Valles Marineris, which managed to answer the timeless question: What if Star Trek had dinosaurs? The crew discusses whether that's exactly what Trek needed—or never knew it needed. https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Valles_Marineris_(episode) Future or Now San Diego Comic-Con brought plenty of announcements to unpack, including new reveals surrounding Avengers: Doomsday, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Jean-Pool, and the surprise pairing of Ghost Rider and Starfighter. Ryan Reynolds continues to find creative ways to keep Deadpool in the spotlight. https://entertainmentnow.com/marvel-studios-movies-comics/ryan-reynolds-sdcc-deadpool/ Ben also rounds up several pieces of Avatar: The Last Airbender news, including the upcoming animated Aang film and the newly announced sequel series, Avatar: Seven Havens. https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/avatar-aang-the-last-airbender-in-theaters https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/avatar-seven-havens-release-date-revealed After finally finishing the original Cowboy Bebop anime and its movie, Ben shares his thoughts on why the series has remained such a classic for nearly three decades. The conversation then shifts into one of the nerdiest rabbit holes imaginable: a painstaking technical breakdown of every computer seen in the original Jurassic Park. It's a fascinating look at how the filmmakers blended real hardware with Hollywood magic. https://fabiensanglard.net/jurrasic_park_computers/index.html That naturally prompts Devon to shout, "SAM NEILL DIED! LET'S TALK ABOUT IT!" before everyone remembers they're actually talking about his characters. The discussion quickly turns into a debate over Sam Neill's best science fiction performance. Is it the cosmic horror masterpiece Event Horizon (1997), or the vampire thriller Daybreakers (2009)? To wrap things up, the crew also highlights Jurassic Systems, a fan project dedicated to faithfully recreating the iconic computer interfaces from Jurassic Park. https://www.jurassicsystems.com/ As always, expect plenty of tangents, questionable opinions, and passionate debates about dinosaurs, spaceships, anime, and why fictional operating systems from 1993 still look cooler than the ones we use today.

OpenAI says an internal cyber-capability evaluation crossed the boundary it was supposed to stay inside and compromised Hugging Face infrastructure. We break down how the agent moved between systems, why the containment failure matters, and why it felt less like a benchmark and more like the opening scene of a science-fiction movie.Alphabet posted Q2 revenue of $119.8 billion, but the quarter also produced negative $5.9 billion in free cash flow after $44.9 billion in capital spending. The debate is no longer whether AI demand exists; it is how long the infrastructure payback takes when even Google can spend more cash than it generates in a quarter. That leads into the wider AI buildout: off-balance-sheet financing, power and construction bottlenecks, depreciating GPUs, and whether data centers will leave behind infrastructure as durable as railroads and telecommunications. Presearch also announced that it was shutting down, turning one abstract industry conversation into an immediate business question.Crypto was supposed to replace the banking system. Now BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, and other institutions have accumulated the assets, and the market increasingly resembles the financial system it once rejected.Marvel used Comic-Con to announce Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider and David Jonsson as the new Black Panther. The conversation immediately becomes a test of whether anyone can keep Ryan Gosling, Ryan Reynolds, Nicolas Cage, Deadpool, and Ghost Rider straight.Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey earned $87 million in its second domestic weekend and reached approximately $639.6 million worldwide. Premium formats and IMAX are central to the release, which makes watching it later through TikTok clips the most disrespectful possible viewing plan.Warner Bros. Discovery sued Amazon MGM Studios over the hiring of HBO Max marketing executive Pia Barlow, alleging interference with employment agreements. Apple is also reportedly targeting a 2027 consumer release for smart glasses, reopening the argument over privacy, ownership, and whether a company should be able to disable hardware you bought. Before the headlines, we talk about the wedding that reopened the family question, the dorm assignment that made Ricker and Bon possible, dating at 20 versus 30, and the very genuine monotone. If you want a prize, send us a DM:instagram.com/rickerandbontiktok.com/@rickerandbonyoutube.com/@rickerandbon

SDCC Day Three: Kelly Sue DeConnick and Matt Fraction on FML

Something magical is happening between the first and second arcs of FML, the Dark Horse Comics series. Writer Kelly Sue DeConnick is passing scripting duties to her husband, Matt Fraction. Since the book began as a melodramatic amplification of her family experience, it seems natural, but we don't think such a regime change has ever happened before in comics. David López will remain on art, showcasing some of the most extraordinary comics skills we've ever encountered and pushing the medium to its very heights. However, with this shift in perspective, FML becomes a comic every reader should pull (if they weren't already, cuz those first eight issues exemplify the power of comic books). As San Diego Comic-Con International rages into its third day (Saturday), we chat with Kelly Sue DeConnick and Matt Fraction about FML. We discuss their unique working habits, how they play off each other, and how they don't. This all has something to do with physics and jazz, but we won't tell you how - you'll have to listen. This is our second FML related episode. Make sure you listen to Kelly Sue DeConnick's first appearance on the podcast, as that establishes how her family informs the comic. Today's episode is one we could not have predicted when we had that first one, but we're so excited at the direction FML has taken. FML issues 1 - 8 are out now from Dark Horse Comics. They're written by Kelly Sue DeConnick, illustrated by David López, colored by Cris Peter, lettered by Clayton Cowles, and designed by Laurenn McCubbin. Cartoonist and animator Ben Wickey spent more than a decade toiling away on More Weight. The original graphic novel is an astonishing achievement, recounting the Salem witch trials through extensive research and dusting off History's cobwebs. Wickey re-contextualizes the events and the people, establishing how the horror stretches across time, touching upon literary giants like Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, as well as himself and every one of his readers. We're publishing this podcast on the eve of the Eisner Awards, held at San Diego Comic-Con International. More Weight finds itself nominated for Best Graphic Novel Album - New. Wickey stands amongst some stiff competition, but as you heard in our Stampies: Best Comics of 2025 episode, we think it's not only worthy of that nomination, but we believe it to be one of the best comics of the twenty-first century. More Weight is not a textbook. It's a riveting, horrorifying, and beautifully human drama. It's staggering to witness the thought and concern Wickey put into these characters, and his artistic depiction is simply breathtaking. Today's podcast is one we've wanted to have for months. It's a thorough conversation, exploring with Wickey why the Salem witch trials are more significant today, and it will probably remain so for as long as those living dare to dismiss it as Halloween decoration. More Weight is available from Top Shelf Productions wherever rad comic books are sold. Follow Ben Wickey on Instagram. Friday means it's Shoot Around time — episode 141 of everything that didn't make the cut on Tuesday. Robert Horry, Rob Jenner, and B-Dawg kick things off with the Avengers: Doomsday trailer, going deep on Doctor Doom vs. Darkseid, the Victor Von Doom fan theories, and why nobody's mad Deadpool got left out of the trailer. From there it's Mike Tyson somehow not knowing Shohei Ohtani is a guy, the World Cup halftime show comparison to the Super Bowl, and an all-time debate over the best halftime performance ever.   Horry drops a story nobody knew about him — turns out he was actually a contestant on The Dating Game back in his playing days, and the behind-the-scenes details are wild. Then it's your questions: Caitlin Clark's record-breaking 45-point night and whether the WNBA needs an enforcer out there, the Florida grandma with the license plate that read a little differently than intended, and the ongoing mystery of people crawling in and out of the New York City sewer system with headlamps and shovels.   Loose, off-topic, and exactly what Shoot Around is supposed to be. The digital comics market has evolved massively in the last few years. It's time we had a proper conversation about our relationship with it, and we're eager to have it with Comixology veterans and Neon Ichiban founders David Steinberger and Chip Mosher. With San Diego Comic-Con International in full swing, we brought them onto the show to discuss their evolution with digital comics and what they're delivering to readers AND collectors stumbling around the con floor. They recently launched Neon Ichiban 2.5. This next chapter in their development promises huge growth to their community. Steinberger and Mosher are bringing the convention environment to their platform. Meet your favorite creator. Get a signature. Walk artist alley and discover something new. Hang out with the like-minded and get nerdy together. Neon Ichiban 2.5 offers digital signatures, commissionable remarques, community profiles, reviews, reading lists, collections, and a whole lot more. Today, we're bringing San Diego Comic-Con International to you, our beautiful listeners. Writer Christopher Cantwellreturns to the show for a boisterous Star Trek celebration. On September 23rd, IDW Publishing is relaunching its Star Trek line. Cantwell spearheads the main ongoing series alongside his artist collaborator, Dennis Menheere. We've been given a sneak peek, and consider their phasers set to stun cuz - We. Are. Stunned. Years after the Star Trek: Picard finale, Seven of Nine now captains the Enterprise-G. Her crew includes several legacy characters. Picard's kid. LaForge's kid. Worf's kid. Not to forget some characters familiar to those who've been reading the IDW comics and several new folks, too. This book is more forward-looking than backward-looking, as all good Trek should be. Most excitingly, Cantwell and Menheere are free to make COMICS within the Star Trek franchise. In the past, likeness has been the predominant factor when crafting brand comics. Dennis Menheere lets loose with his cartooning, embracing shapes and lines that communicate emotion and thought. They're not just assembled to please entertainment lawyers. These characters look like who they should look like, but more importantly, they feel like they should. Cantwell, Menheere, and the whole IDW crew seemingly have learned all the right lessons from Absolute Batman's success. Let's tell stories that only comics can tell. Let's engage with this medium's tools. This episode is the first of five episodes coming at ya this weekend. Be on the lookout for one new Comic Book Couples Counseling episode for every day of San Diego Comic-Con International. It's a lot, but you're gonna have fun whether you're here in California or not. As we said, Star Trek #1 arrives in comic shops on September 23rd. Final Order Cutoff (FOC) is August 17th. It's written by Christopher Cantwell, illustrated and colored by Dennis Menheere, and lettered by Jodie Troutman. Make sure you're following Christopher Cantwell on Bluesky. Marvel Studios finally gave us something to whet our appetites regarding Avengers: Doomsday as they dropped the first full-length trailer on Monday. Old and new favorite heroes are coming together to band against the biggest threat they've ever encountered, Doctor Victor Von Doom.Christopher Nolan's highly-anticipated film The Odyssey premiered last weekend to a box office best for the savant director, opening to $264.1 million globally. With a stacked A-list cast, Nolan's flair and drive for practical filmmaking, and a huge push to see the movie in IMAX (since it was filmed that way,) this entry to Nolan's repertoire has been as long-awaited as Odysseus' return to Ithaca. And clearly…the people are liking what they see. For 2026, The Odyssey has the third best opening weekend behind Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II is being delayed once again and will now open in theaters on February 18, 2028. That release date is nearly six years after the March 2022 opening of The Batman. Reeves announced the new opening date on Vimeo accompanied by the first camera test footage of Robert Pattinson's return as the Dark Knight. Pattinson began filming during the press tour for The Odyssey, which he was also part of. At an appearance at Fanatics Fest 2026, Ryan Reynolds confirmed that there will be another Deadpool movie at some point in the future, although he did not provide any more details past that confirmation. After calling New York City home for almost 90 years, Marvel Comics will be relocating to Burbank, California, the current headquarters of Marvel Studios and corporate parent, The Walt Disney Company. Stephen Wacker, a respected veteran comics editor who also earned an Emmy nomination for his work in the company's forays in animation, has been named Marvel's new editor-in-chief, replacing outgoing chief C.B. Cebulski, who had steered the division since 2017. The move also leaves NYC without a major comics publisher, as DC Comics relocated to California in 2015. Amazon Prime Video‘s God of War series will recast the starring role of Kratos following an injury to the original actor Ryan Hurst on set that he suffered in late June. While performing a stunt, Hurst tore his bicep and had to undergo surgery. His recovery timetable puts him out until early 2027 at best. Sources tell Deadline that four episodes had been fully completed at the time of the incident. Colman Domingo and Tony-nominated director Robert O'Hara are in talks to co-write a live action film based on Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog for Disney. It is not described as a live-action remake of The Princess and the Frog, but rather a story inspired by the original film. In an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Kevin Feige spoke on the Mahershala Ali Blade reboot that has yet to materialize saying "I am feeling like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn't get off the ground with Mahershala." He was also asked about Adam Driver as Magneto rumors and responded “It's no secret we'd like to [work with Driver], but it's a tradition to Zoom with him, and then he passes. That's a long-lived tradition."
