The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 4th study session on Dr. Colin Anthony Beckles' PanAfrican Sites of Resistance: Black Bookstores and The Struggle To Re-Present Black Identity. This 1995 dissertation is the first time in the illustrious 14 year history of The Katherine Massey Book Club that we will read a non-book. Dr. Beckles conducted an extraordinary amount of research and produced several reports documenting the import of black bookstores and the intense Racism targeting them globally. Having just completed Char Adams' Black-Owned: The Revolutionary Life of the Black Bookstore, Gus concluded that text willfully excluded Dr. Frances Cress Welsing and Neely Fuller Jr. to stress anti-sexual behavior and to practice black misandry. Reading Dr. Beckles' - who is briefly mentioned in Adams' work, dissertation is the corrective to Black-Owned. Last week, we learned intense details about how System of White Supremacy is enforced in all areas of people activity in the United Kingdom. Racist Jokes & songs, denial of employment & just wages, direct violence, and Racist labels for black students like: "educationally subnormal (ESN)." Dr. Beckles highlights the "Windrush Generation," black people born in the Caribbean "colonies," who were welcomed to clean up Britain on the cheap after the Nazis left Europe in ruins. We also learned about one of Gus' all-time favorites, Suspected Race Soldier Enoch Powell and the "Rivers of Blood" speech - which was widely featured during the 2011 London Riots. Black British bookstores formed in direct response to the System of White Supremacy. At the Feast of Tabernacles, Jesus declares that those who are spiritually thirsty should come to Him and drink, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies of a future outpouring of the Holy Spirit. He identifies Himself as the living water, the true temple, and the source of divine life, pointing to His impending ascension and glorification as the necessary precursor to the Spirit's universal pouring out. The sermon emphasizes that the Holy Spirit, though present in the Old Testament, is now promised to all believers—not just priests or prophets—inaugurated at Pentecost and available to every person who believes. This spiritual nourishment is not a one-time event but a daily, personal reception, transforming the believer from within and fulfilling the promise of God dwelling with His people. The passage also highlights the division among the people and religious leaders, underscoring the spiritual blindness of those who reject Jesus despite His powerful, authoritative teaching, while affirming that true faith is marked by a personal, ongoing encounter with Christ.

This week's episode takes a storytelling approach to fisheries management with Jay Herrala of the Rivers and Streams Research Branch of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. Jay walks us through the history behind today's bass populations — starting with the changes that shaped both Kentucky's lakes and the Ohio River — and how those shifts led to the current conditions anglers see on the water. From there, he explains an experimental project aimed at improving bass fishing on multiple fronts: relocating bass from overcrowded lakes to the Ohio River to help create better growth potential in those lakes, while also supporting river populations that have struggled with natural recruitment. Jay shares what this effort looks like on the ground and what early results are showing from the research side. Beyond the science, Jay brings a wealth of on-the-water experience across Kentucky's lakes and streams — and he shares his “Best-of-the-Best” fishing destinations around the state. And how we stood there, low beasts among the white oaks, Spanish moss, and spider webs, obsidian shards stuck in our pockets, woodpecker flurry, and I refused to call it so.
