He read the entire New Testament in a weekend. Fasted for 40 days. Got a Bible college degree. Got ordained. Pastored a church. And after all of that — 10 years of trying — he still couldn't hear God's voice.Mark Virkler wasn't casual about his faith. He was desperate for it to work. But every method he tried led to the same result: silence. No one could explain what God's voice actually sounded like. One teacher called it "subterranean rumblings of the spiritual mind." Another said "you just know that you know." None of it helped. Then one morning, God woke him up with a voice he couldn't ignore and pointed him to Habakkuk 2:1-2 — where he found 4 simple steps that changed everything:Stillness — quiet yourself and get beyond your own thoughtsVision — fix the eyes of your heart on JesusFlow — tune to spontaneous, flowing thoughtsJournaling — write down what you receiveWhat surprised Mark most? He realized he'd been hearing God his whole life — he just didn't know what to listen for. Those "brilliant thoughts" that seemed to come out of nowhere? That creative solution? That nudge to call someone? That was God. He'd just been attributing it to his own mind.In this conversation, Mark shares the full story — the 10 years of frustration, the wrong definitions that kept him stuck, the moment it broke open, and how an 8-year-old granddaughter now uses these same steps every single day.If you've ever thought "Why can't I hear God?" — this might be the reason.

In this episode, Mike and Tim ask a provocative question: Is "Christ is King" becoming blasphemy? They begin by analyzing recent political rhetoric, specifically a speech by Pete Hegseth, to discuss how biblical language can be hijacked for coercive power rather than reflecting the character of Jesus. The hosts argue that proclaiming theological truths while living in opposition to the way of Jesus is a distortion of "faith and politics." The conversation then shifts to a deep exploration of the Lord's Prayer and the petition, "Your Kingdom come." Mike and Tim unpack the concept of the "anti-kingdom," explaining that Jesus preached the Kingdom of God in enemy-occupied territory. They explore "theology" regarding the "powers and principalities," looking at the Divine Council in the Psalms, the "heavenly host" in Genesis, and how the biblical authors understood the spiritual forces behind structural evil and injustice. This isn't just about ancient myths; it is about understanding "the role of the church in society" when facing systemic corruption. By contrasting the "cruciformity" of the Gospel with the power dynamics of empire, the guys offer a framework for "navigating cultural challenges" with wisdom. They highlight that true "Christianity" recognizes the spiritual battle at play—not just in individuals, but in cultural patterns and ideologies. As the hosts discuss the "seen and unseen" realms, they emphasize the importance of prayer and "justice" in a world that is both beautiful and broken. We encourage and would love discussion as we pursue these complex topics, so please engage the conversation on Facebook and Instagram. They look so beautifully abandoned, even in use. You say they look like arks after the sea's dried up, I say they look like pirate ships, and I think of that walk in the valley where J said, You don't believe in God? And I said, No. I believe in this connection we all have to nature, to each other, to the universe. And she said, Yeah, God. And how we stood there, low beasts among the white oaks, Spanish moss, and spider webs, obsidian shards stuck in our pockets, woodpecker flurry, and I refused to call it so. So instead, we looked up at the unruly sky, its clouds in simple animal shapes we could name though we knew they were really just clouds— disorderly, and marvelous, and ours.   Copyright Credit: Poem copyright ©2012 by Ada Limón, whose most recent book of poems is Sharks in the Rivers, Milkweed Editions, 2010. In this Traveled episode, we head back to Teton Valley Lodge with Brian Berry to explore how the South Fork Snake, Henry's Fork, and the Teton River each bring a completely different challenge depending on flows, seasons, and how you approach the water from a drift boat. Brian walks us through how fishing changes throughout the year—from winter nymphing and streamer tactics to the explosive Mother's Day caddis hatch and summer dry-dropper fishing. We dig into boat positioning, reading subtle holding water on technical rivers like the Henry's Fork, and why staying flexible with river choices is often the key to a successful trip in eastern Idaho. #887 Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/887

Historian Faisal Husain wrote the book "Rivers of the Sultan: The Tigris and Euphrates in the Ottoman Empire" and in this episode, helps us explore the history of the Tigris and Euphrates. He argued for the necessity of understanding human history within the context of geological time, discussing the rivers' origins roughly 20 million years ago, tracing their influence on civilization from the "agricultural revolution" (which some scholars argue was a mistake leading to health issues) to the rise of early urban centers like the Sumerian cities. The conversation highlights the difference between the gentle Euphrates, which attracted early settlements, and the fast and unpredictable Tigris. Shifting to the Ottoman era, Husain examines the environmental challenges of Ottoman Iraq, which was poor in essential resources like grain, metal, and wood suited for construction, and details the extraordinary story of the Euphrates river changing its course in the late 1600s due to a poorly dug irrigation canal. He emphasizes the cultural importance of the palm tree and the vital role of water buffaloes, which made life possible for a quarter of the Iraqi population in the wetlands, whose fate would have otherwise been migration to seek resources and refuge elsewhere. 0:00 Introduction1:47 When Did the Tigris and Euphrates Start?3:04 The Importance of Deep History5:49 Geological Origins: 20 Million Years Ago7:37 When the Rivers Began to Matter to Homo Sapiens10:40 The Rationale for Writing Deep History12:00 Starting Middle East History Before 6th Century Arabia14:45 The Difference Between the Twin Rivers17:05 Why Sumerian Civilization Clustered on the Euphrates20:36 Questioning the Agricultural Revolution23:16 How Agriculture Began: Trial and Error27:00 The Consequences of Taming Nature30:40 The Ottoman Conquest of Iraq32:20 Why Iraq Was Environmentally Poor for a Major Power36:06 Iraq's Default Status Under Iranian States38:25 Baghdad in the 16th Century42:25 The Euphrates Shifts Course (Late 1600s)47:09 Water Buffaloes: The Essential Technology of the Wetlands49:28 Ranking the Most Important Crops51:03 Evliya Çelebi: The Traveler54:49 Ottoman vs. European Traveler Perspectives58:35 The Book Cover: Baghdad on the Tigris Faisal Husain is an environmental historian of the Ottoman Empire, with a geographical focus on its eastern provinces in Anatolia and Iraq and a temporal focus on the early modern period. His first book "Rivers of the Sultan" examined the role of the Tigris and Euphrates in the establishment of Ottoman state institutions in the Ottoman eastern borderland between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. His second book project is an environmental history of Ottoman frontier expansion east of the Euphrates during the sixteenth century. He is co-editing a book on the global histories of animals (under contract with Oxford University Press) with Emily Wakild (Boise State University) and Nancy Jacobs (Brown University). In 2024-2025, he served as a senior lecturer at Boğaziçi University's Department of History in Istanbul through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program. The conversation also briefly revisits the ongoing discussion surrounding women initiating, touching on a timeless principle: institutions may regulate structure, but the awakening of devotion and the transmission of transcendental knowledge unfold according to subtler laws.

Monsoon season turns Vṛndāvana into a living poem — and Śrīmad Bhāgavatam uses that poem to deliver precision teaching on the inner life: how uncontrolled senses flood the mind, how devotional service makes a person genuinely luminous, and how steady yogic vision remains unshaken amid life's storms. The conversation also briefly revisits the ongoing discussion surrounding women initiating, touching on a timeless principle: institutions may regulate structure, but the awakening of devotion and the transmission of transcendental knowledge unfold according to subtler laws.

What if the American Dream isn't dead — but the story we've been told about it is wrong? That's the starting point for Christopher Rivers, a former Army engineer, U.S. diplomat, corporate strategist, and two-time legislative candidate. His book, You Shouldn't Have to Kill to Get Ahead, grows from a rare vantage point: working-class roots, service in combat zones and embassies, and 9,000 doors knocked in local politics. In this conversation, Rivers connects the dots between old policy decisions, today's economic realities, and the culture-war battles that keep us distracted. He argues that the real crisis isn't just political — it's a crisis of belonging — and that rebuilding connection is the most practical leadership strategy we have.Join host Khudania Ajay (KAJ) to explore why hard-working people feel stuck, how systems actually shape opportunity, and what any of us can actually do about it — whether in America or anywhere the old dream is fading.Explore belonging and opportunity at https://kajmasterclass.com.#KAJMasterclass #KAJConversations

Humans have a way of abstracting nature so far from its source that we take something as huge and powerful as water and isolate it, viewing it only as a resource for ourselves rather than an integral part of something much, much bigger than our sinks, showers, and dishwashers.‍On this episode, we're going to try to shrink the distance between ourselves and the water that keeps us alive, we're going to hear how you're connecting with water, and we're going to take stock of the ecological and financial impacts of trying to control water. Plus, we're going to talk to journalist Erica Gies about how we need to change our relationship with water for our safety, our health, and the health of the ecosystems we're a part of.

Rivers are always photogenic, even telegenic, and rivers often become the setting for many films. Each year since 1981, the National Paddling Film Festival (NPFF) has provided a collective presentation of river films. This year's festival is happening on February 21, live and in person in Kentucky with a virtual streaming option available for the price of a cup of coffee. We have 3 guests bringing us details about the NPFF. Stephanie Hoelscher is the director; Devin Ashley Brown is the featured paddler in the film “Mother River” about her Mississippi River run; and Nishan Thapa is the creator of the film “The Jewel of Wild West Nepal” about paddling the rivers in his home country of Nepal. GUESTSStephanie HoelscherDevin Ashley Brown@afrodiskayakHarvest Film CompanyNishan Thapa@riverratmountainkat@summit_to_sea2026 SPONSORSDenver Area Nissan Dealers@nissanusaFILMSNATIONAL PADDLING FILM FESTIVAL@npff.paddlingTickets: live & streaming THE RIVER RADIUSWebsiteRunoff signup (episode newsletter)InstagramFacebookApple PodcastSpotifyLink Tree

In The Meeting of Rivers: Translating Religion in Early Modern India (Oxford UP, 2025), Elaine Fisher reconstructs Vīraśaiva origins from unstudied multilingual archives, overturning the conventional narrative of a monolingual Kannada bhakti movement protesting Sanskrit Brahmanism. The evidence reveals Vīraśaivism as multilingual from inception—its anti-caste inheritance deriving from Sanskrit Śaiva tradition, not rejecting it. Fisher proposes a "linguascape" model replacing unidirectional vernacularization with multidirectional flows through which local Vīraśaivisms were translated into being across south India.
