Drawing from her new book, Seven Rivers, Vanessa takes us on a journey down the Nile, Danube, Niger, Mississippi, Ganges, Yangtze, and Thames to explore the empires built along their banks, the spiritual and cultural significance these waterways hold, and how they've been used — and abused — throughout history. Green River Distilling Company's Master Distiller Aaron Harris & CEO Colonel (Ret) Mark Erwin of lofted Spirits joins the Scotchy Bourbon Boys to share the extraordinary story behind their special US Army 250th Anniversary bourbon. This isn't just another limited release – it's a heartfelt tribute that celebrates America's oldest military branch through meticulous craftsmanship and meaningful symbolism. The bourbon's journey from concept to bottle showcases the nimble innovation possible at Green River, where military connections run deep. Harris reveals how the Sergeant Major of the Army personally revived the project after initial legal challenges, and details the painstaking process of creating an official licensed Army product. The partnership extends Green River's long legacy of supporting veterans, dating back to founder J.W. McCulloch's generous whiskey donations at veterans' memorials that helped secure an 18-year government contract.Bottled at a purposeful 111.1 proof to honor Veterans Day (11/11), this small batch blend features four to six-year-old barrels selected for their warm vanilla, leather, and cinnamon notes, with distinctive cherry undertones. The hosts conduct a thorough tasting that confirms this bourbon delivers exceptional quality, earning near-perfect scores for its rich complexity and buttery mouthfeel. But perhaps most memorable is the dramatic product launch – Erwin describes the unforgettable day when former Army Golden Knights parachuted bottles from 5,000 feet at Fort Bragg before sharing authentic toasts among veterans. What began as a projected 2,000-case release quickly expanded to 10,000 six-packs that flew off shelves nationwide. Clay and his good friend Russ Eagle discuss the rivers Lewis and Clark traveled from Pittsburgh to the Pacific Ocean, including the Ohio, the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Clearwater, the Snake, and the Columbia. The paradox of Clay's 2025 Airstream journey along the Lewis and Clark Trail is that they floated America's rivers, and Clay has been driving along the roads closest to those rivers. To overcome this, he has contrived ways to get on the rivers of the expedition. In North Dakota, he floated for three days in a pontoon from Fort Rice to Bismarck with two young comrades. Just north of Yellowstone National Park, he and his friends, including his daughter and her fiancé, took a day-long raft trip on the Upper Yellowstone, where it remains a whitewater stream. As they recorded this podcast, Clay and Russ, plus 20 others, were about to float the famous White Cliffs section of the Missouri, east of Fort Benton, Montana. And Clay plans to get passage on an excursion boat near the mouth of the great Columbia River. Why are rivers so important to Clay? What is it about the source of mighty rivers that so engages his historical imagination? This podcast was recorded on July 20, 2025.

Join us as Ocean House owner and award-winning author Deborah Goodrich Royce moderates a conversation with our featured author, New York Times bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe. About the Author: Mary Alice Monroe is based in Charleston, South Carolina, is the New York Times best-selling author of thirty books–and counting. Richly layered and rooted to place her Lowcountry-set novels defy literary labels. More than feel-good escapism or traditional beach reads, her engrossing stories deftly explore the intersections and parallels between Mother Nature and human nature, hooking readers emotionally and introducing them to characters and causes that live in their hearts and minds. Her robust library of work–from the popular Beach House series to her compelling fiction, to her newer middle grade series, The Islanders–engages readers across generational lines, inspiring them to take a harder look at the environment–and our impact on it. To ask the important questions. To seek answers. To create connections–both with nature and in our personal lives. About Where the Rivers Merge: The Rivers End, Monroe brings the compelling family saga to an emotional conclusion that will resonate with readers. The novels' timely topics of friendship, feminism, parent/child relationships, and the environment make each book of the duology perfect for book clubs.  1908: The Lowcountry of South Carolina is at the cusp of change. Mayfield, the grand estate held for generations by the Rivers family, is the treasured home of young Eliza. Free spirited, she refuses to be confined by societal norms. Instead, Eliza revels in exploring the golden fields and sparkling ponds of Mayfield, observing wildlife, and riding horses. But her halcyon days are cut short by the Great War, coastal storms, and unexpected challenges to Mayfield. As Eliza battles personal pains and the ravages of family turmoil over the years, her love and devotion for the natural world puts her on a collision course with the patriarchal traditions of a bygone era. 1988: At 88, Eliza is the scion of the Rivers/DeLancey family. She's fought a lifetime to save her beloved Mayfield and is too independent and committed to quietly retire and leave the fate of the estate to her greedy son. She must make decisions that will assure the future of the land and her family—or watch them both be split apart. Set against the evocative landscape of the twentieth-century American South, Where the Rivers Merge is a dramatic and sweeping multigenerational family story of unyielding love, lessons learned, profound sacrifices, and the indomitable spirit of a woman determined to persevere in the face of change to protect her family legacy and the land she loves. In this episode of SpaceTime, we explore groundbreaking discoveries and ambitious plans in the realm of space exploration. The Most Distant Black Hole: Casper's Lidz 9Astronomers have identified the most distant black hole ever observed, known as Casper's Lidz 9, dating back 13.3 billion years to a time when the universe was only half a billion years old. This supermassive black hole, weighing in at approximately 300 million solar masses, raises intriguing questions about its rapid growth in the early universe. The findings, published in the Astrophysical Journal, provide a unique opportunity to study the structure and evolution of galaxies during this enigmatic period, with implications for our understanding of black hole formation.New Insights into Ancient Martian WaterRecent research suggests that Mars was even wetter than previously believed. A study presented at the Royal Astronomical Society's national meeting examined over 1500 kilometres of ancient riverbeds in the Nochesterra region, indicating that flowing water was widespread during the Noche and Hesperian transition around 3.7 billion years ago. These findings challenge existing theories about Mars's dry history and suggest a more complex and active planet, potentially providing a more hospitable environment for ancient life.Nuclear Reactors for Moon and Mars BasesThe United States has unveiled plans to develop nuclear reactors to power future bases on the Moon and Mars, with the first plant expected to launch by the end of the decade. This initiative aims to support sustained human presence on these celestial bodies, addressing energy needs that solar power cannot fulfil. The reactors will provide essential electricity for life support, scientific equipment, and resource utilisation, marking a significant step in the ongoing space race.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesAstrophysical Journalhttps://iopscience.iop.org/journal/1538-4357NASA's Artemis Programhttps://www.nasa.gov/specials/artemis/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-space-astronomy--2458531/support.

PG&E recently tendered its License Surrender Application and Decommissioning Plan for the Potter Valley Project to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. This plan details when and how PG&E plans to tear down its two dams on the Eel River. And since an agreement has been reached for run-of-the-river, wet season diversions to replace the existing diversion to the Russian River, support for dam removal is now pretty much universal between the two basins. PG&E's Application is eye-wateringly long and technical. Thankfully, Scott Greacen and Alicia Hamann of Friends of the Eel River are here to help break this all down. The Eel River needs your help! Embark on this year-long voyage through the Bible, and let each day's passage uplift and inspire you. TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible, where every day is a fresh journey through the pages of Scripture. It's August 5th and we're on Day 218 of our adventure together. I'm your host, Hunter—your brother, Bible reading coach, and fellow traveler as we gather from places near and far to warm our hearts by the fires of God's love. In today's episode, we dive into 2 Kings 23, 2 Chronicles 35, and John 7. We'll witness King Josiah's groundbreaking reforms to restore true worship in Israel, the powerful celebration of Passover that hadn't been seen since the time of the judges, and the challenges Josiah faced against powerful nations. Then, we'll turn to the gospel of John and find Jesus at the Festival of Shelters, teaching boldly about living water—the Spirit that he promises to pour out on all who believe. Along the way, Hunter draws out the deeper meaning behind the festival's water-pouring ceremony, connecting it to Jesus' declaration that he is the true source of life and hope. We'll wrap up with heartfelt prayers for God's guidance, mercy, and joy as we step into a new day. So grab your Bible, settle in, and join us as we encounter God's living Word together—and remember, you are loved. No doubt about it. TODAY'S DEVOTION: He is the Source of Living Water. Picture the scene at the festival of shelters—each day, the priest carries water from the pool of Siloam, pours it out upon the altar, and it runs down the temple steps. For seven days, this ritual is repeated, and on the final day, the expectation and hope of the people reach their pinnacle. This act was more than tradition; it was a symbol, a living picture of the Messiah pouring out the Spirit upon God's people, a promise rooted in the Scriptures—“I will pour out water to quench your thirst and irrigate your parched fields… I will pour out my Spirit on your descendants and my blessing on your children” (Isaiah 44:3). And in this very moment, Jesus stands and shouts to the crowds: “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me. Anyone who believes in me may come and drink.” It's as if Jesus steps into the very heart of the ceremony and says, All of this points to me. I am the One you've been waiting for. I am the Source of the Living Water the world so desperately needs. The promise, the hope, and the life the ritual anticipated is found in Him—and received by coming to Him, trusting Him, believing. That's the invitation Christ makes to you and to me: to come to the Source, to drink freely, to allow His Spirit—like streams of living water—to flow within us and out of us into a thirsty, longing world. No longer do we look for life in ceremonies or traditions—good as they may be—because the true fulfillment is Christ Himself, the One in whom all God's promises find their “yes.” We don't come to Jesus for fame, for recognition, or for any fleeting thing. His brothers sought notoriety, but Jesus came, not to be applauded, but to do what the Father asked—to seek, to save, and to invite us into the overflowing life He shares with the Father and the Spirit. His heart is to give, to pour out, so that we too would be channels of living water, blessing, hope, and renewal to the world. So, today, let's come to Him who is the Source. Let's drink deeply of the life He freely gives. Let's allow the living water to flow through us—transforming us, refreshing us, and reaching out to others. That's the prayer I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Almighty and ever loving God, you have brought us to the light of a new morning. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit that we may walk this day in peace. Guard our steps from temptation. Shield us from the weight of fear and shame, and lead us deeper into the joy of your presence through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O Christ, light of the nations, shine in every place where shadows dwell. Call the scattered home, heal the wounds of division and gather all people into the communion of your grace. May the knowledge of the Lord cover the earth as the waters cover the sea. Amen. And now, Lord, make my hands ready for mercy. Make my eyes quick to see the hurting, my ears open to the cry of the lonely, and my feet swift to bring good news. Let me seek to bless, not to be noticed, to serve, not to be praised, to forgive, not to hold back. For in your way is life, in your mercy is healing, and in your love is the peace this world cannot give. Amen. And now, as our Lord has taught us. We are bold to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. In this rare 1984 recording, Lance Lambert teaches on Christ as the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit, a subject he calls impossible to ignore since it appears at the beginning of all four Gospels. Lambert addresses why the Holy Spirit is often the "ignored person of the Trinity" and explains what it really means to be baptized in the Spirit. He argues that nothing in Christian life, from conversion to church life to spiritual gifts, is possible without the Holy Spirit's work. This Holy Spirit baptism message was recovered from VHS footage after the original audio was damaged. You'll see a young Lance Lambert delivering this Bible teaching with his characteristic clarity. In episode 523 of the Outdoor Adventure Lifestyle Podcast, I'm talking with Haley Stuart, filmmaker, environmentalist, and whitewater instructor. Haley joins us to discuss her work protecting rivers, collaborating with communities across the Americas, and raising awareness about mega hydroelectric impacts. Her journey inspires meaningful action for lasting environmental change. Show Notes What if I told you that rivers could teach us more about life than a self-help book ever could? What Happened: When Haley Stuart first dipped her paddle into a river, she wasn't chasing adrenaline—she was running headfirst into her fears. Growing up in suburban New York, she didn't even know kayaking was a sport. It wasn't until she attended a kayaking-focused high school (yes, those exist!) that she realized rivers weren't just a setting for adventures—they were life itself, rushing and relentless, filled with twists, turns, and lessons. At first, the sport terrified her. But over time, the pull of the water and the tight-knit community of paddlers won her over. What started as a hesitant curiosity turned into an unshakable passion. Traveling the world, Haley discovered the hard truth: many of the rivers she loved were under threat—from dams, mining, and neglect. She couldn't sit by and watch them disappear. That's when everything changed. She met indigenous communities who lived alongside these rivers, fighting daily battles to protect what had sustained them for generations. Haley realized something profound: saving rivers wasn't just about ecology—it was about people, too. And through her work, she's helping amplify their voices, blending storytelling, conservation, and sheer grit to make an impact. Principle: The heart of Haley's story? Real change starts when we listen. Listen to the rivers, the people who live near them, and the truth about what's really happening in the world's wildest places. Many of us dream of adventure, but few think about what happens when those landscapes are lost. It's not enough to explore the outdoors—we need to protect it. Transition: Too often, we underestimate the power of our choices—what we support, what we fight for, or even where we decide to paddle. We think, "Someone else will handle it," or "What difference can I make?" But here's the truth: you matter more than you think. Haley's work reminds us that our adventures and the decisions we make along the way can transform the fate of entire ecosystems and the communities they sustain. That's Why: That's why this week's episode of the Outdoor Adventure Lifestyle Podcast is a must-listen. Haley's journey from nervous kayaker to river conservationist will inspire you to think differently about the waterways we all rely on—and how you can play a role in preserving them. Call to Action: Are you ready to discover the adventure, responsibility, and heart that comes with loving rivers? Tune in to hear Haley's story. Don't just explore the outdoors—help protect it for the next generation. Amazonian Rivers Initiative Rios to Rivers Tuichi River Paddle Tribal Waters & Kayakimün
