Inserted ad free shows:www.patreon.com/dopeypodcastThis week on Dopey! Comedy Legend and serious recovery survivor Darrel Hammond comes on the show! We dispose of a dead opossum. We reads listener messages about Patreon, Pearl Jam, the Charlotte McKinney episode, Spotify reviews, Theo Von speculation, “Many Rivers to Cross,” NA vs AA, and future guests like Tim Dillon. There's a voicemail about colonoscopy propofol and an email from Canadian listener Dylan about secretly smoking purple fent in rehab and still graduating before getting three years clean on methadone. Dave tells his own stories about using in treatment and invites more “using in rehab” emails. The main interview is a long, raw conversation with Darrell Hammond about childhood abuse, feeling like an outsider, drinking his first Bush beers, baseball, impressions as survival, and finally uncovering buried trauma in intense psychodrama therapy. Darrell talks about self-blame around his sponsor's suicide, years of in-and-out sobriety, cutting as a way to control panic and signal pain, and trying to work at SNL while hiding self-harm and drinking after the show. He gets into Clinton, the Comedy Cellar, how he finds the “funny” in impressions, the crack-house story on 137th Street, and the stroke that finally terrified him into fully embracing recovery, meetings, cognitive therapy, yoga, connection, and a “life of consultation.” He closes with his “religion” (improve myself, contribute to others' happiness) and his take on God, gravity, Einstein, and serenity. Dave wraps with Patreon/Zoom plugs, Safe Spot and sticker/mustard ads, a quick Andrew Dice Clay impression, a mini rant about Instagram, and a sincere reminder that recovery is the best thing that ever happened to him. All that and more on this weeks installment of the good old dopey show! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. After that, we sample a bit of the U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary's erotic poetry. Plus, our big dumb president is making his Hollywood dreams come true in reuniting the whole gang from the film Rush Hour. #194 - What if adventure isn't something you chase, but something you create? That question sparks a sweeping journey with author and explorer Rick Glaze—from small-town Tennessee roots to whitewater rapids, open-ocean sails, limestone caves, and a treasure map that refuses to sit still. We dig into the stories behind The Purple River, Spanish Pieces of Eight, and Eight Pieces of Eight, and how real rapids, big water, and Caribbean passages shaped the fiction that readers can't put down.Rick opens up about the turning points that changed his course: a fear at the top of a long Rogue River rapid, the serendipity of spotting a piece of eight on a tiny island, and the joy of learning to sail after years of kayaking. He explains how songwriting and novel writing use time differently—compressing a life into three verses versus slowing a moment into a chapter—and why both require the same core ingredient: a spark you carry into the work. You'll hear how family dynamics fuel a high-stakes treasure hunt across islands, why a “magic map” demands courage from a young protagonist in Tennessee's vast cave system, and how a dog-and-cat-narrated, laugh-out-loud tale of 1959 grew from a pandemic pivot. We also get practical about the creative life today. Rick talks candidly about discoverability in a noisy world, the shifting sands of social media, and the discipline it takes to keep shipping stories and songs. His advice lands with a friendly thud: begin ugly. Write the first novel so the second can exist. Play the first nine shaky shows so the tenth can sing. Whether you're a paddler, a sailor, a reader of adventure fiction, or a creator looking for a push, this conversation blends craft, courage, and curiosity into a guide you can actually use.If you enjoyed the episode, tap follow, share it with a friend who loves adventure stories, and leave a quick rating or review so more listeners can find the show. Jimmy Cliff, born James Chambers on 30 July 1944 in Somerton, St. James Parish, Jamaica, emerged from humble beginnings to become one of reggae's most beloved and influential figures. His parents worked modest jobs on a rural farm, and from a young age, Cliff showed a natural gift for singing. As a child, he sang in his church choir; by his early teens he had moved with his family to Kingston, determined to carve out a career in music. At just 14 years old, Cliff scored his first hit with the self-penned single “Hurricane Hattie”, a song that nods to his own miraculous arrival during a storm. With his early success in Jamaica, he soon caught the attention of producer Leslie Kong, whose Beverly's label would provide a platform for Cliff to record more material and refine his style. In 1965, Cliff followed an invitation from Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, to move to the United Kingdom. While in London, he experimented with combining ska, rocksteady, and soul influences, earning recognition beyond Jamaica. Over the late 1960s, he released key tracks like “Wonderful World, Beautiful People” and “Vietnam”, the latter gaining admiration for its protest message. A turning point in his career—and in the global recognition of reggae—came in 1972 with the film The Harder They Come, directed by Perry Henzell. Cliff starred as Ivan Martin, a small-time musician who is forced into a life of crime. The movie's gritty realism and its all-star soundtrack, featuring Cliff's vocals on songs such as “Many Rivers to Cross”, “Sitting in Limbo”, and the title track itself, resonated widely. The film is often credited with helping bring reggae to a wider international audience. Though Cliff continued to release music through the 1970s, he also explored his spiritual side—spending time in Africa and embracing Islam, as well as other spiritual practices. In the 1980s, he returned to a more mainstream sound and released Cliff Hanger, winning his first Grammy Award in 1985. The success continued: in 1993, his cover of Johnny Nash's “I Can See Clearly Now” for the Cool Runnings movie soundtrack became a global hit, reintroducing his voice to a new generation. Throughout his life, Cliff recorded prolifically—producing over 30 albums. His later work continued to reflect his commitment to social justice: in 2012, his album Rebirth, co-produced with Tim Armstrong of Rancid, won him another Grammy. In 2022, he released Refugees, a deeply humanitarian record inspired by global crises, which he used to voice solidarity with displaced people. Jimmy Cliff's influence extended far beyond his singing. He collaborated with a wide array of artists—from the Rolling Stones to Annie Lennox to Paul Simon—and his songs were covered by many others, underlining the universal appeal of his message. In recognition of his impact, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. In Jamaica, he was honored with the Order of Merit, one of the nation's highest accolades. On a personal level, Cliff was intensely private. He had several children, and his longtime partner, Latifa Chambers, survived him. His wife announced his passing on 24 November 2025, revealing that he died following a seizure and pneumonia. Jimmy Cliff's legacy is defined not just by his music, but by the spirit it carried: hope, resistance and unity. From his rural Jamaican beginnings to global stages, he remained true to his message and his people. In his words, he always believed in crossing to the other side—to higher ground. Now, his journey has come full circle, but his songs continue to carry that same power to uplift, to challenge, and to heal.To learn more about Jimmy Cliff head to his website https://www.jimmycliff.com/

The world tends to always take any milestone or accomplishment and respond with, “That's great. So what's next?” On and on through life, the question comes on constant repeat. Today, let's listen to a passage from King Solomon in his frustration with the “What's next?” “Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless!” What do people get for all their hard work under the sun? Generations come and generations go, but the earth never changes. The sun rises and the sun sets, then hurries around to rise again. The wind blows south, and then turns north. Around and around it goes, blowing in circles. Rivers run into the sea, but the sea is never full. Then the water returns again to the rivers and flows out again to the sea. Everything is wearisome beyond description. No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied. No matter how much we hear, we are not content. History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new. Sometimes people say, “Here is something new!” But actually it is old; nothing is ever truly new. We don't remember what happened in the past, and in future generations, no one will remember what we are doing now. (Ecclesiastes 1:2-11 NLT) Petty cynical, huh? Well, we all have days when we feel this same way. Solomon was simply voicing what we in the human race feel quite often. Now, listen to him in chapter 3, verses 11-13: Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God's work from beginning to end. So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can. And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God. We all feel the weight of what Solomon expressed in the first passage: meaningless feelings about our days. But God is the crucial element in life to bring value and purpose, even to the mundane and the seemingly meaningless. What is one way you can recognize God's gift in what often seems mundane in your life? Life itself, even on the meaningless days, is indeed a gift from Him. Let's pray: “Father, help me look for beauty, value, purpose, eternity, and to look for Your work in my world and celebrate your gifts, especially the gift of life. As above, so below.”

Certain artists bring a feeling of soulful upliftment and leave a mark on your musical heart - Jimmy Cliff is one; you sense a man smiling and embracing life. He's navigated Jamaica's musical evolution from the start, with 1962's Hurricane Hattie, to the soundtrack that put him front and centre on a global stage in 1972. He's continued to release beautiful music that speaks to our spiritual sides, and his legacy will live on for generations to come. R.I.P. Jimmy. (1944-2025) Jimmy Cliff was born James Chambers in 1944, growing up in rural Somerton before moving to Kingston as a teenager to chase the fast-rising ska scene. He was writing songs before most kids his age finished schoolwork, and at just fourteen, he walked into Beverley's Records and caught the attention of producer Leslie Kong. That meeting changed everything. Kong recorded Cliff's first breakout song, “Hurricane Hattie,” which turned the young singer into a local star and opened the door to the bustling world of Kingston studios, sound systems, and emerging talent. By the mid-1960s, Cliff had outgrown the island and pushed his music into London, where his sound found a new audience. The turning point came in 1969 with “Wonderful World, Beautiful People,” a UK Top 10 hit that introduced his voice and message to listeners far outside Jamaica. Songs like “Many Rivers to Cross” showed a different side of him - raw, vulnerable, and deeply soulful. Then came The Harder They Come in 1972. Cliff didn't just star in the film; he carried its soundtrack with songs like “You Can Get It If You Really Want” and the title track, helping reggae explode onto the global stage. Jimmy Cliff passed away on November 24, 2025, at age 81, leaving behind one of reggae's most influential legacies. His catalogue stretches from ska and rocksteady roots to crossover hits decades later, including “Reggae Night” and his 1993 revival of “I Can See Clearly Now.” For a one-hour tribute mix, you've got a whole arc to work with, early Kingston youth, global breakthrough, soundtrack legend, and the unmistakable voice that helped carry reggae to the world. The prophet Ezekiel received a powerful vision of a valley filled with dry bones that came to life when God breathed His Spirit into them. This vision came during Israel's darkest hour after Jerusalem's destruction, when the people felt spiritually dead and hopeless. God commanded Ezekiel to speak prophetically to the bones, and they assembled into bodies, but they still needed God's breath to truly live. This teaches us that many people around us may appear fine externally but are spiritually lifeless, desperately needing God's Spirit. As believers, we're called to be part of God's army, speaking life into dead situations through authentic relationships and bold faith. The vision also shows us the difference between being a lake church versus a river church - one that creates movement and transformation rather than just providing spiritual comfort.

November always seems like the rainiest of Danish months, but it isn't, actually. October is. But November feels rainier, because the sky is so grey, and it gets dark so early, and the rain sometimes comes down in little freezing pellets. Denmark is a watery country, not just its long coastline and many rivers and lakes, but also the fact it is mostly near sea level. Like the Netherlands nearby, it is extremely vulnerable to flooding. Climate changes in recent decades have made it worse, and sudden cloudbursts – or skybrud– cause a lot of damage. So retrofitting Denmark for even more water in the future has become a national obsession. One popular solution: opening up previously buried rivers and streams, particularly those that were paved over with concrete.  This "daylighting" of buried waterways allows them to collect excess water from storms, and beautifies cities as well.  This is the most recent episode in our 12-part series, The Danish Year.

Because this week we hosted Unpacked Live, a—you guessed it—live version of the podcast in partnership with Visit California in Boston, Massachusetts. In 2022, Visit California launched Visit Native California, and the goal with the Boston live event was to celebrate California's diverse tribal communities. Unpacked host Aislyn Greene was joined onstage by John Acuna, a member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe in Humboldt County, California, and a river guide with Rios to Rivers and Paddle Tribal Waters. In July, 2025, shortly after the Klamath River was undammed—the largest dam removal project in U.S. history—John helped guide a historic 30-day expedition down the Klamath River, known as the First Descent. On stage, John shared the Klamath River's history and what it was like to spend 30 days kayaking a river that has been so essential to the West Coast Native communities and was for so long diverted and quite literally drained of life. In this episode, we go deeper. John shares his early life, how he found his way back to the water, and the lessons he's learned after spending so many years on the river. He also explains how cultural stewardship, land‑back efforts, and Indigenous fire and river knowledge are reshaping landscapes and communities across Northern California. In this episode, you'll learn How John's childhood and early work as a firefighter led him to river guiding and youth programs. Why the Klamath and Trinity rivers matter to Indigenous food security, culture, and health. What the Klamath dam removals changed — and how quickly salmon and waterways began to recover. How Paddle Tribal Waters and Rios to Rivers use recreation, mentorship, and cultural practice to rebuild connections for Indigenous youth.
