Baked and Awake Episode 109 September 21 2020 The Prepping Issue Terms: Prepping, Survivalism, Bushcraft, Herbalist, Homesteading, Lost Ways of Living Types of Preppers:   CDC and FEMA Emergency Prep Types aka “Straights”, Self Professed Practical Preppers- generally normal types who for some reason have the preparedness mindset.  Some of these people might come from families with strong ancestral memories of times like The Great Depression or other adversity, and generally do not present as being “Preppers” but more of a pragmatic, well stocked household.  Full On Preppers- These are your Red Greens and Dale Gribbles of the world.  This type of prepper is a little more upfront about their lifestyle, and may selectively share tips or theories with neighbors they trust, as they seek to feel out who their SHTF community members will be.  Red and Dale still live in the normal suburban neighborhood.  They mow their lawns, and they have a portable generator, maybe even a tent trailer or some other modest but always at the ready Bug Out vehicle parked in the driveway. Baked and Awake Episode 107? July 29th 2020   Intro:  Greetings- We smoke weed on this podcast.  If you don’t smoke weed, or are out of weed, press stop now and go fix your problems before coming back here to listen.     Personal updates: The Family Corona Garden is booming, we have harvested over 40lbs of onions and over 50lbs of potatoes already, as well as dozens of zucchini, and a few early cucumbers, radishes, carrots and artichokes.  Next up for the garden will be the Tomato explosion, as we have many (many!) tomato plants this season. We are also currently resetting the newly opened up potato bed for a fall/winter planting of garlic and some brassicas (cabbage-kale family) that will overwinter and be harvested in the spring.  For those of you following along and gardening yourselves- although it seems late in the year, and you’re probably thinking anything you put in the ground now might get torched by the harsh sun of peak summer- if you can keep your babies covered up with some shade cloth or netting of some kind, and moisten that soil, you can set yourself up even now for both that winter crop, and a few fast growing fall crops that you can be enjoying up through october and november, even in more temperate climates like the Pacific Northwest.  Some of the best of these late season fast growers include spinach, lettuces, swiss chard, broccoli, and radishes. Baked and Awake Episode 099 February 27 2020 -SMOKING TEMPLE BALL HASHISH Purchased at Evergreen Market Renton.  Asked for Bubble Hash, received Temple Ball (oops) +$10 Differential for the temple ball! Either one would be almost my first time ever being exposed to these types of hash, but is the Temple Ball worth the extra money? What even IS a “Temple Ball?” We’ll find out.  I have been inspired by the content of one Frenchy Cannoli for a while now and if you haven’t already heard of him he’s a man known for traveling and teaching the history and methods of making traditional cannabis hashish. Frenchy’s instagram is full of well candid yet powerful videos freely sharing his techniques for creating beautiful hash literally anywhere and with no special tools whatsoever, unless you count a bottle filled with hot water and some potholders “special tools”.  Frenchy rolls a Temple Ball, 3 min video, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fi0i_rXVId0    -INDICA AND SATIVA, TIME TO EVOLVE These labels are entirely meaningless. Segment inspired by a recent vlog by Todd P McCormick  (insta: https://www.instagram.com/toddpmccormick/)  Todd is a veteran Cannabis advocate and educator from what I gather, with a lot more time in Cannabis media including print, than myself. I believe I’ve seen him more than once on Bubbleman’s Hash Church back when I wouldn’t miss an edition of that amazing long running Youtube/Pod/Vlog/Panel Discussion show. Check out Todd’s IG where he’s active, and posts some great stuff that you’re sure to find edifying. Todd’s salient points in this recent talk about Indica and Sativa and how badly they’re being relied upon to describe the entire world of cannabis centered on Carl Linnaeus, American Vets encountering what they would come to call “Indica” in India and Afghanistan, etc, and the major changes that brought to existing cultivars already in play in North America at the time as they brought these strains home to breed with the existing longer flowering tropical landrace strains that though popular, struggled to thrive outdoors here. We use Indica and Sativa as labels that are supposed to map to an expected type of high. The problem of course is that there are a number of important factors that actually contribute to what the flower you’re smoking, and the concentrates made from it, are going to deliver in terms of experience.  These range from inputs like what nutrition especially sugars was the plant fed during its life, how early or late the plant was harvested, and importantly, how effectively and gently was the plant dried and “cured” before being consumed. Finally, time on the shelf after the cure is complete will continue to affect the taste and effects of the flower, with the intensity of the high deteriorating over time but not before becoming increasingly tranquilizing in it’s presentation, even as overall potency slowly declines. I have a question regarding the proposed House Bill 2546 concerning limitations on potency of legal Cannabis Concentrates. At the top of the pdf of 2546 there is a statement concerning a 2019 study of psychosis patients' that showed a correlation between that mental illness and high potency cannabis concentrates. (Statement included in-line for clarity)     "The legislature finds that health professionals and researchers continue to find an association between the use of high potency marijuana and the occurrence of psychotic disorders. A 2019 study analyzed data from patients with first-episode psychosis and found that, compared with participants who reported never having used cannabis, "participants who used high-potency cannabis daily had four-times higher odds of psychosis in the whole sample, with a five times increase in London and a nine-times increase in Amsterdam." The study defined high-potency cannabis as a potency greater than ten percent. Further, the study found that its findings are consistent with previous evidence suggesting that the use of high-potency marijuana has more harmful mental health effects than use of less potent marijuana."   My question is can I please be referred to a link where the cited study can be read, or if your office is in possession of digital copies can you provide this for me? As a follow up question, can you provide me with any other information about the bill, or any comments on the importance of this from your team's perspective. Was this bill for example, strongly advocated for by members of the general public, or perhaps mental health professionals? Baked and Awake Episode 71 March 25 2019   SMQAi YouTube Channel- All credit to SMQ for introducing this topic Buster1978 YouTube Channel- (Researcher who brought the document to SMQAi) The CIA Reading Room Assessment and Analysis of The Gateway Process The Holographic Universe, Michael Talbot The Tao of Physics, Fritjof Capra Belonging to The Universe, Fritjof Capra Tao Te Ching, Lao Tze   “Analysis of the Analysis and Assessment of The Gateway Process, a CIA Report”   Thoughts and takeaways from my reading of and subsequent reflections on the CIA report detailed in episode 70 of the Podcast.  Welcome. Disclaimer- we smoke that weed.   Before I jump into my bulleted list of the five top takeaways I got from this very interesting document, I asked myself, “Self, what were things like back in 1983?  What was going on in America, and the World at that time, that such a task should be set before the United States’ Premiere Intelligence Gathering Organization. The report is dated 9 June.  It was a Thursday. Ronald Reagan is POTUS, but we don’t use that acronym yet. Across the Atlantic, Margaret Thatcher’s famously Conservative Parliament is re-elected in a landslide to a second term. The song “Flashdance” better known by it’s chorus “..what a feeling” tops the US Pop music charts, while the still young, and rising star Michael Jackson occupied the #5 spot on the R&B charts with “Beat it”.  MJ is years and many more chart topping hits away from the scandals and accusations that would plague him in the era leading up to his death. Let’s paint this picture in just a little more. Also in 1983, at the same time that the CIA is paying people to deeply and seriously investigate and report upon things like the Astral Projection and Remote Viewing program we have come to know as The Monroe Institute’s Gateway Process, we have- the creation of Crack Cocaine in The Bahamas, where it almost immediately moves to the US. 267 Marines are killed in a terrorist attack in Beirut, an act that would lead directly to a US Invasion of Grenada two days later.  The Space Shuttle Challenger is still flying, with America’s first Female Astronaut, Sally Ride aboard. The US Government for some reason admits to shielding Klaus Barbie aka “The Butcher of Lyon” an infamous and murderous Nazi who was wanted in France for War Crimes. Compact Discs are also introduced in 1983, heralding the end of the Golden era of Vinyl records and foreshadowing our digital future. Some of you listening to this podcast now may have never played a CD in your lives. Ditto for Cassette tapes, as an aside. Motorola in 1983 had just received permission to test Cellular Telephone technology in the US for the first time, and the El Nino weather phenomenon became worldwide news for the first time, marking the moment when we became aware of concepts such as Global Warming, or as we tend to call it today by the neutered label of “Climate Change”.     On the television in our house: Professional Tantrum Thrower John McEnroe was screaming at line judges in ways that today would get him banned for life, while Martina Navratilova was, more quietly- playing better tennis than everyone alive (put together) including the legendary Billie Jean King, and perhaps even that loud American Man. The Islanders, Our New York Islanders, under the capable leadership of  Brawler (and multiple record breaking leading scorer and future hall of famer) Mike Bossy, fellow prolific scorer Bryan Trottier (Also an NHL Hockey Hall of Famer), and anchored by the legendary goalie Billy Smith(yep, also a HHoF’er)- had the Stanley Cup. Still. They won four in a row between 79-80 and 1984. Between these victories and the soon to come Amazin’ Mets in 1986, these were without equivocation or room for interpretation- The Wonder Years for Long Islanders that they still reminisce about to this day. As for me, young Stephen- well I guess I was 9 years old and still almost two months away from my 10th Birthday, one slightly notable in that I received a couple of token, but seemingly very important, grown up gifts that year.  My first wallet, with a ten spot and a dime inside, and a shiny new Casio Digital watch with calendar and chronograph. (Boy, was I ever on my way!)   As I hope I have established with some degree of credibility, it was a different time. A time where we see however, the birth and beginnings of some things that will come to dominate our lives today.  We see in 1983 bright hope for the future in the form of space flights and technological wonders like Cell phones and though not detailed above, the game changer of Personal Computers. But there is as yet, no internet.  More ominously at this time we experience the United States invasion of Grenada in the first in a series of Central and South American conflicts (some would say US backed regime change campaigns) that won’t end until after the Iran Contra scandal in Reagan’s second term in 1986, for which only Oliver North, a Lowly Colonel and obvious scapegoat, and a few government contractors are found guilty or serve any significant time for having secretly laundered and delivered $18 Million dollars (and probably some weapons) to the Cocaine Trade Powered Contras, (Now you know where the Video Game got its name)  who were fighting to overthrow the Cuban backed, therefore evil Communist Scum- Sandinista regime in Nicaragua, in violation of the Boland Amendment that specifically banned the CIA and the DOD from funding groups with ties to the drug trade. This shameful meddling was made more humiliating by the fact that the $18 million that ended up in the Contras hands came from a larger sum of $30 million AND a pile of weapons traded to Iran for Seven American Hostages that had been kidnapped in 1985 in Lebanon. This deal was brokered in secret, while President Reagan loudly proclaimed that “We do not negotiate with terrorists” except when we do and then we won’t tell you about it.   We include the last example as a means of establishing the connection between the US Government and it’s foreign policy a the time, and that of today. In the 1980’s our Executive Branch of government would and did engage in acts of deception, violations of our own laws as well as international best practices for dealing with fractious Groups and Governments around the world. This has not changed, as we have frequently observed here on Baked and Awake when looking at more modern actions taken by our government in the present day.   List of Key Takeaways for me after reading the doc.  These are the threads we will pull on in our examination of the report.   36 years ago, in 1983, the CIA was seriously investigating programs like The Gateway Process and others in an attempt to confirm the existence of and quantify, even systematize utilization of such seemingly superhuman abilities including, but not limited to: Lucid Dreaming, Dream Recall, Astral Projection, or Out of Body Experiences- OBE’s. Remote Viewing, or the act of observing people, places, and events from afar while in a sleep or meditative state. Add to the above the express goal of Focus 21 and above (check this) in The Gateway Process, of stepping out of the bounds of temporal space completely, engaging in a form of Time Travel. (Section One) The top level description of the techniques employed by The Monroe Institute are a sort of Pop Psychological pastiche of Binaural beats, Isochronic Frequencies and other audio tones, employed on top of breathing exercises and as far as is noted in the report achieved without the use of drugs- seems harmless and mostly unsurprising to those of us thinking about it in 2019 with decades of exposure to Yoga, Mindfulness in the Workplace, and Self Care tips from Pinterest helping us achieve collective enlightenment between our trips to Target for all material goods not purchased on Amazon.  But this isn’t 2019. It’s 1983. Neighborhood Butcher Shops with sawdust on the wrinkled hardwood floor with their smell and texture so magical that it defies explanation- are still a thing. Travel Agents were still as successful as Attorneys, and worked twice as hard- and The CIA is investigating High New Agey seeming weirdness with a dead serious approach that recognizes everything it’s looking into as being part of understood Science, not the Paranormal. Not witchcraft. They invoke labels like Quantum, Holograms, Dimensions, etc. and look to Physicists to provide the framework for understanding the systems, tools and processes at work. All this, with the objective of learning from The Gateway Process the secrets of consciousness itself, access to the great unwritten but nevertheless perfectly preserved whole of universal knowledge in the form of something that we only have terms like “The Akashic Records” for,  AND how to participate in events at any point in time or space, everywhere in the past, present, or future. The key concepts here are enumerated under Section Five of the Document. (Section 12) “Energy creates, stores, and retrieves meaning in the universe by projecting or expanding at certain frequencies in a three dimensional mode that creates a living pattern called a Hologram”.  See also: Michale Talbot’s Visionary book from the late 1980’s, The Holographic Universe. In short- the CIA says (paraphrasing) that “The Absolute”, as they refer to it, is an infinite self aware energetic field that pervades and suffuses everything in the universe. This field expresses itself and experiences itself through movement in a three dimensional realm wherein every iota of matter is just one of countless resonating fields of energy, experiencing reality from it’s own perspective, with perfect capture of the information being created into the universal hologram. This information can be retrieved during certain exercises in methods such as The Gateway Process.  The CIA also admits to and notes the similarities between things like Trances, Meditation, and “Kundalini Psychosis” as they label it, to The Gateway Process. Section 19- The report painstakingly describes how human consciousness establishes and maintains a nearly continuous, but ephemeral level of contact with the infinite through completely natural oscillations in brain wave frequencies, focusing in on the moment of rest in between swings of a given wavelengths vibration. At the tiny, completely imperceptible moment when our brainwaves stop, for just a nanosecond, before swinging the other way- consciousness “clicks out” of this dimension and joins the Absolute, the infinite. To explain it, they invoke “Planck’s Distance” to explain the moment this occurs.  Planck’s Length, as we often refer to it today, is explained in part, as follows: The Planck length is the scale at which quantum gravitational effects are believed to begin to be apparent, where interactions require a working theory of quantum gravity to be analyzed. The Planck area is the area by which the surface of a spherical black hole increases when the black hole swallows one bit of information. To measure anything the size of Planck length, the photon momentum needs to be very large due to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and so much energy in such a small space would create a tiny Black hole with the diameter of its event horizon equal to a Planck length. The report appears to describe a model of understanding of The Universe that characterizes the shape of the Universe as a torus, or a self enclosed spiral (Think those spinning apple core analogies you’ve seen or one of those infinity bracelets made out of slinky like metal and woven in a cross pattern that you can endlessly rotate or spin along your arm and it doesn’t twist up or tie itself into knots. This gestalt then goes on to explain that the parts of Universe we observe now from our vantage point tend to support the understanding that we are existing near the top of the moving spiral pattern, and are about to move into the part of the patterns where our locality begins to fall back toward the Universal center, to be reabsorbed and then, eventually, re born out the other side of the pattern. Refer to Section 25 for a more complete understanding of this notion.   Other Themes touched upon in the report, just listed without deep explanations.  Read the Doc to see for yourself if you also pickup on these vibes:   Subliminal and Sub Audible tones and Auto Hypnotic suggestion can be used to facilitate the focus process. Deja Vu could be explained by observations described in the report Patterning, described in Section 30-B sounds a lot like “The Law of Attraction” or “The Secret” to me.   Section 29-Describes an “Energy Bar Tool” that is directly likened to a psychic Magic Wand. These two were watershed moments for Cannabis, and will directly lead to more historic events in the coming years. We will be watching closely of course. No prediction here except that the impact of their success will be enormous in the very near future. CBD or cannabidiol- everybody’s favorite cannabinoid, was Legalized Federally under the 2018 Farm Bill aka the Agricultural Act of 2014- Was Passed this year by both the House and Senate in a (cough!) Republican led effort. We’ll leave the commentary on the whys and wherefores for another day- This bill was subsequently signed into law officially just a few days later by President Trump?  Is this bizarro world? Did the Republicans just take credit for legalizing CBD? Wellllll, kinda but not really but of course sure whatever man it’s cool. Crucially, we come to understand that while this federal de scheduling of Cannabis Sativa-L, or Industrial Hemp, that is to say Cannabis plants containing .03 or less percent of THC- allows for the free production of CBD based products for sale in US markets, and allows for interstate commerce of SAME, this does not for example, legalize the Growing (what we often refer to as “production” in the biz) freely by whomever, wherever, and absolutely not individuals. Only Licensed Farmers who are participating in state run programs that are in turn federally compliant can participate in INdustrial Hemp production.  So, sadly, this means that as yet you are not allowed to just start growing your own hemp CBD plants alongside your windowsill strawberry patch just yet. I say just yet, but really I’m not sure we need every Tom, Dick, and Sally up and down the block growing bigo’ Hemp Plantz and spreading pollen all over the neighborhood- might ruin someone’s hard preserved Sensimilla! Cannabis Stocks explode on to the NYSE, Bubble talk rampant, but didn’t seem to slow investment in Firms like Canopy Growth, Tilray, and others.  Then there was the Aurora/Cannamed debacle that resulted in a so called hostile acquisition of the latter company. Things in the consolidation and upward transfer of power from Small regional players to National and international scale consortiums is underway.  Look for 2019 to feature many more such stories as the Aurora Cannabis drama, and bigger. FDA Approves Epidiolex for use in USA, a treatment for two severe types of epilepsy Dravet Syndrome and Lennox Gastaut Syndrome, both of which seem to target young children and can be responsible for dozens of painful, terrifying, and eventually brain damaging seizures per day.  The strawberry flavored syrup differs little from many currently available over the counter so to speak offerings- with basically a highly concentrated dose of “very clean” CBD being delivered in the sweet solution. The case for products like Epidiolex of course is more rigorous production purity requirements, quality control, etc would be presumably in place for an FDA approved product.  What does this mean for all the Mom and Pop CDB oil producers out there though? Can they now claim more specifically that CBD treats these two horrible syndromes? NOPE. (And they probably shouldn’t- although I wouldn’t say don’t try using the stuff if you think it might help!) Only Epidiolex has been shown in lab testing to be effective, and even then it’s only being approved to be used in combination with “other treatments”.  In typical Pharmaceutical fashion, we see there are also listed side effects including Headache, nausea, Vomiting, and upset stomach, so I’m not sure what to attribute that to as I don’t usually associate the use of any CBD oils with those bummer symptoms. The prediction here is that the approval of this product will foreshadow some future effort to besmirch or disrupt the existing cottage industry, usurping the Apothecary’s claim to Hemp and CBD products and bringing them into the Glaxxo Smithkline/Lever Corp/Bayer-Monsanto Johnson & Johnson purview exclusively.  If I’m not a complete idiot, we’ll all be brushing our teeth with CBD fortified Crest before too long. Of course they’ll push it out to the Yuppies first by making a Tom’s of Maine version. But I digress! H.R. 420 announced, a national “Regulate Cannabis like Alcohol” Bill is proposed by Oregon Democrat Earl Blumenauer. This would, if passed, permanently de-schedule Cannabis as a controlled substance under Federal Law. This would pave the way for inter state sales and transportation of cannabis between legal markets, even through States or territories that have not yet legalized Marijuana, although it does of course expressly forbid the product from being transported INTO non legal states. So, yeah- I do think they thought about how to make it possible to ship the stuff, as it will be impossible or a lot harder anyway, to literally drive around a state that isn’t having it. Prediction:  This, along with the CARERS act, or Compassionate Access, Research Expansion and Respect States- also currently on the floor of The House- will pass, along with other key standalone pieces of legislation, and these together will herald the end of the federal prohibition against Cannabis, opening up the possibility for traditional banking institutions and investment bankers, and the Corporations they empower- to come along and literally transform and not for the better- the entire face of what we have been knowing up to this point as, “The Industry”. I am being pointedly ominous here, because I see a looming apocalypse for cottage industry level growers, processors, and “Brands” that is absolutely a foregone conclusion for 99 percent of everyone who thinks they are a player right now.   Podcast Goals for 2019 Continue to put out consistent content and always raise the bar for personal integrity and quality of work. We won’t rush it, or force them, but we will keep them coming. Decrease my FB presence to the barest minimum with an eye to leaving completely, maybe in 2019. Part personal goal to be sure, but it has to happen. You know the reasons as well as I Increase my YouTube Presence to 1000 Subscribers/Hit 50K Downloads across all platforms Increase engagement with the Baked and Awake website and mailing list, getting 100 subscribers Send out 4 Newsletters in 2019 to the members of my newly powered up mailing list.  It won’t be full of sales pitches, sponsored messages, or other bullshit spam. Just follow up info from episodes, bonus materials from the best of the last couple months of research, calls to action to help me decide topics, things like that. We’ll have the domain and the mailing list when all the socials crumble under the weight of their own corruption.   This concludes Episode 65!  How fun it was to look back on the year, and see how momentous it really was for cannabis in 2018.  These of course weren’t the only stories of note in that realm, there were many many more but we don’t need to recap them all here and now. Baked and Awake Episode 062 03 December 2018   Intro-Disclaimer-Newsbrief-DGN   Welcome once again to my weekly, self directed psychotherapy session, the Baked and Awake podcast. Today is December 3rd 2018, and this is our 62nd episode of the show.  (Thanks, Disclaimer about pot and where new listeners can find me on DGN, email, etc). Baked and Awake will continue to support and collaborate with talented friends from Damaged Goods the Show, Daddy Issuez, Needless To Say, and Claytime in the Basement.     Fortunately for Yours truly, my family at DGN supports what I/We do here at Baked and Awake unconditionally, and welcomes the added cache and potential collaborative horsepower that becoming involved with a small but industrious family of high test Creators like the people at Darkmyths.org.     From before I ever pressed record on the first episode of this show, I was listening to several podcasts from the Dark Myths Collective.  I found Dark Myths after about a year of podcast listening, having cut my teeth on Rogan, Carlin, Serial, and a number of other more or less mainstream podcasts. As I listened to more and more shows, and branched out, I found that there existed an entire realm of Independently produced shows that featured compelling voices weaving rich tales, and asking penetrating questions of the sort that I live for.  Here and there, and with increasing frequency- I heard a catchy intro voice. Sometimes robotic, sometimes in faintly sultry feminine tones, that “this podcast is part of the Dark Myths Collective…” and finishing with the somehow inviting, “the darkness awaits”.. Well, I can tell you, I was hooked. From absolute staples of my listening rotation such as The Eastern Border, History on Fire, The Conspirators, and The Secret Transmission Podcast- none of whom I can go without listening to every new episode of the moment they come out- to amazing newer shows like Martyr Made, a history podcast in the finest tradition of Hardcore History.  Speaking of History, there is the extremely well done History of Pirates Podcast, The Chilling and addictive Southern Grimoire, the amazing Strange Matters Podcast, and more. Honestly- I’m barely scratching the surface of a group that is diverse, uniformly excellent, and to a one- “touched by darkness”.   As such, it was my distinct honor to find a favorable response from my closest (indeed ONLY) inside man over at Dark Myths when I recently screwed up my courage to inquire as to how to apply for membership.  Fellow Podcast Builder Kristaps Andrejsons- host of the Extremely High Quality show The Eastern Border (Very entertaining Cold War History from the perspective of an Eastern European Historian), long time member of the Collective, very generously “sponsored” me, facilitating a swift introduction, and ultimately induction to the collective in just a matter of days. We have hundreds, thousands of downloads even!     Here I’ll switch to a listicle format to shorten up my notes, and multiply the number of “Umms” and “ahhh’s” I’ll have to edit out later.  Great fun, that part let me tellya. So- no I’m not selling out.  I own my work and we, together decide the direction that the show will take. DGN and DMC respectively are here to support me/us in our mission, as I in turn support them in the shared goals of growing, through meaningful collaborations both on the mic and behind the scenes. What can you expect?  Also known as “how many “commercials” are you going to have now, Steve?  Ummmm, first, they’re not commercials. Promos for other shows, yes- of course.  That’s how we discover new podcasts, right? I mean, what kind of psychopath actually uses the search function in their fave podcast app for anything other than inputting the name of a podcast someone, somewhere- told you to listen to? That’s what I thought. So, yes- more of that and probably frequently- they will be members of DGN, DMC, and let’s not forget all my friends in the PBL, or Podcast Builders League (Find us on Facebook and Twitter!) As our little Podcast Cabal grows and forms, like Voltron- into a force to be recokoned with, I find myself ever critical of my podcast.  From its overall sound (background buzz, anyone?), to the length of shows, to the depth of research that we do- I’m looking to up the quality across the board.   To that end, I’ll soon be transitioning from a usb Mixer to a Digital Audio Interface, and I hope that I can finally tune out some of the very annoying to me, so I’m sure it must be bothersome to YOU- buzz that I have the hardest time getting away from now, and that causes me to be forced at times to add even more compression or other editing wizardry to the shows than I want to. That, or be forced to constantly mask persistent background noise with music- and as much as I love having the music of our talented friend Antti Luode, (Listen to him on Spotify today!), I sometimes would just as soon sit here quietly and talk with you with nothing between us but the air.. So, that’s most of the personal updates I can think of for now.  Josh Kinkaid is busy pulling in Cannabis Industry field reports for us as we speak here in the local area, and will be venturing into the Great White North next week for a Canadian Event that looks really interesting as well, so we have that to look forward to very soon. I find that helps a little.  You can also speed them up to maybe 1.25x speed, and it actually sounds a little more natural, imo. I don’t know what to think of it all yet, but I can’t get enough of it, it all connects, and we have more than enough to talk about here to go for literally MONTHS- so yeah. I am considering taking the audio from this episode and last, and recording the full text of the book and releasing it at some later point in time as special content, if there appears to be some interest in it.   When considering the impact of the Nag Hammadi Library, it is crucial to have some appreciation for not only how amazing it is that we even have these books at all, but also how much cultural, technological, and even political insight they provide into this incredibly important era of Human history, where and when so much of the world’s core values systems draw their roots back to. I found an erudite summary of the historical gestalt in which we find the Nag Hammadi texts on a website called CatholicIreland.net. We will read an excerpt from that summary of an in depth analysis of the texts in the form of a book called “The Gnostic Discoveries”. The section we will review is focused on Codicology at the Museum of Cairo, for some perspective on the texts physical construction..   Thoughts on the Nag Hammadi after studying for presenting this content:   Books that inspired my desire to share this topic include those listed below among many others. Things I can’t help but observe in reading the first few chapters of The Gospel of Thomas are that this Jesus was not the same in tenor as the “Turn the other cheek, render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s” Jesus of the canonical bible.  This prophet also seems to speak, when confronted with banal or short sighted queries from his disciples- in riddles or thought puzzles, challenging the audience with his words, to set with them, make meaning out of them based on their own direct experience, before returning to the teacher with more unproductive questions. Do I agree? Do I believe? Does that matter? Read it yourself. Listen to it, or read more than once. These gospels remind me personally in a number of ways, of the Tao Te Ching.  Some key passages, statements red awkwardly, or troublesome. The text is incomplete, multiple translations do exist, personal insight may be greater. Baked and Awake Episode 053 - LIVE From RenCon 2018 at the Interurban Hotel Conspiracy and Occult Disclosure in Comic Books and Graphic Novels Welcome everyone and thank you for coming to my TED Talk.  Please try to work with me today as I will be reading much of this presentation.  It’s part of podcasting that we often script greater or lesser degrees of our shows, necessitating at times this sort of… set up in a live setting. It’ll be fine.  I’ll look up now and then and we’ll get through this together, refreshed and having had a break off the busy Convention floors. I’d like to take a moment to also comment on how beautiful the Hotel interurban is, and how stoked I am to be here with you today podcasting from this beautiful space right in the middle of the Renton City Comic Con. Also please join me in thanking my lovely Niece Payton and her amazing Boyfriend Rob, for hanging out with my two boys today while we all enjoy this amazing show.  Thanks so much to both of you, I owe you each a big solid. As for myself- I’m Steve Cominski, and some of you with us today may already know that I am the host of the Baked and Awake podcast, produced right up the hill from here, from our home in the beautiful Skyway neighborhood. We talk cannabis lifestyle and education stuff from my perspective as a member of the legal weed industry and before you ask- NO I am NOT the Plug! Seriously though I sincerely hope you did figure out how to get safe before the event, or are happy enough waiting until you are home or somewhere else 420 friendly, because it’s just about 420 right now and I know I’m feelin’ great. If you’re feelin it too, you don’t have to say or do anything- you’re dialed. Now, a little more about the podcast- in addition to talking about all things green and stinky and how to smoke it, we like to get weird.  And by “we” I do mean me most of the time, although as you’ll hopefully come to find out I am fortunate to have already had the occasional, amazing guest sit down, to share a session and usually a story! These conversations cover topics mysterious and paranormal. At times I find myself exploring subjects philosophical or spiritual. Quite often, I dig in, with a gleam in my eye that’s not only the weed- and chop it up with you about some fantastic thing or another that our more shall we say “would be upstanding” friends and neighbors, certainly family members, might very well like to label “Crazy Conspiracy Talk”. I’ve done episodes about The Maury Island Incident, You may know it as Vashon Island- and the UFO sighted there in in 1947, that was said to have dropped hot molten slag on to an innocent Logging Salvage Boat Crew below, killing a dog.  We have talked about the Martha Washington School for Insane Girls in South Lake Washington. NOT a myth! How about the tragic and downright strange circumstances of the deaths of Bruce and Brandon Lee, both interred in Seattle just North of Capitol Hill.. Heck, we even took a two episode look into the bottomless and baffling  Mel’s Hole, way out in Pullman WA-  and if you haven’t heard of Mel’s Hole, lemme tell ya- it’s a HECK of a story.. So for those of you coming to it for the first time today, again- thanks for being here!  ...And you’ve got a lot of catching up to do so I suggest you pull your phones out and find Baked and Awake right now in your itunes or your Spotify or whatever you’re using, and subscribe to the show before you get distracted by another full sized, 3D Printed, transforming Optimus Prime cosplay (I’m not mad!)- because you’ve got like 52 episodes to listen to, not counting this one!  Finally, when this podcast is over, I’ll be hanging out in the hall for a few minutes to say hello, and hand out stickers, if you’re into that. And now, my introduction to the notion that there is a strong, persistent custom that exists among the writers and artists responsible for the creation of most of the Comic, Graphic Novel, Video, and Big Screen content we consume, to perpetuate the impression on to us, everywhere a series of archetypal mythological personages, histories, and hidden teachings in the form of thinly and sometimes not so thinly veiled imagery, symbolism, language, etc. This Programming spans languages and cultures, religions and examples can be found all over the world- we’ll keep it western for our purposes. It is my contention- and I am in no way claiming to be the first or even the fifty thousandth person to draw some of these parallels- that this umbrella theme has been here since the instantiation of well, who knows probably the Gutenberg printing press, but lets stay a bit more topical and say around the dawn of Comic Books, and soon after that, as color and first makeup effects and then Special on screen effects really began to take off- Hollywood and Feature film production in particular.  Prior to the era of the talkies, movies were shorter and had limited or no recorded audio, therefore they were severely limited in the scope of stories they could portray in a worthwhile treatment. One medium that WAS up to the challenge though, back then was Comic Books! Comics, and their forebears’ Pulp Magazines, were the original playground for the fertile imaginations of many of the writers who would go on to populate the Movies’ later worlds of Creature Features, Alien Invasion Horrors, and Wizards and Warlocks. Stories of High Espionage and Intrigue were also popular tales for the early Comics and Pulps, and let us not forget the Paranormal, Bigfoot, and Ghost Stories, with all of the aforementioned story types finding themselves intermingling and overlapping deeply with each other along the way.. The roles played today by Comic Books, big budget, special effects fueled Hollywood Movies, and to an increasing extent, our ever more immersive video games, is one of social psychology and social engineering, in my opinion. Whether this psychology is benevolent or malevolent in nature is highly subjective. Digression.  “Alright, But Steve”, you say- “what do you think we are being engineered for, Bro? I mean, it’s not like there’s really a secret cabal of international One Percent of the One Percenters, Banksters and Satan worshipping, apolitical Kabillionaires running the entire world from shadowy private island fortresses and off grid underground bunkers, right?!” “I mean, you don’t mean to sit here and tell me you think the United States took and expatriated thousands of Nazi Officers of the modern day STEM career path persuasion, folding them into american intelligence and science agencies all over the country in the wake of WWII, giving many of them new names and biographies in the process, and setting up more than a few of them in palatial, secluded estates the likes of which would make Bill Gates jealous, some of them maybe right in his own back yard? I am of course going straight for the deep end, though nowhere near the bottom of the pool, with references to Operation Paperclip. The disclosure of awareness of alternate histories, alien contact, the belief in and practice of occult rituals into the modern era by some of the seeming most elite layers of society, corporate, and the worlds of Church and State- has BEEN going on right in front of our eyes since the dawn of both comics and the film industry- yes even in the silent movies that I just said didn’t matter. Back around then, as we said in those early 40’s and 50’s, Golden and Silver age titles like Amazing Stories, Science Fiction Stories, Weird Tales, more parochial seeming straight up wholesome comic book titles like Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain America, and so many others paraded all the old Gods and Titans before us, either by their historic names or by some clever semantics, names that nevertheless mean the same thing. That’s right, we need not dig into independently published, gritty, black and white comics by edgy writers nobody’s heard of outside of this room.  No indeed, we need simply cast our eyes about us and look at just about any example of the arts you care to take the most casual of looks into, and we will see that they are rife with imagery, iconography, and symbolism that, once they begin to be revealed, can hardly be missed anywhere you see it.. “Modern” Movies have been hogging a lot of the spotlight from comics, going all the way back to dusty old features like The Day The Earth Stood Still or War of the Worlds, itself adapted from a live radio broadcast in 1938 by Orson Wells, which was in turn adapted from a 19th century story by the same name written by H.G. Wells. Fueled by these and many stories like them in comics, radio, and TV as well as feature films, The Alien Scare was on. And yet to this day, 80 years hence, no Little Green Men have landed on the White House Lawn, that we know of.. To date myself a bit while bringing the sci fi analogy a little nearer to my heart- I am of the generation that grew up on the OG STAR WARS.. I know- movie. Doesn’t matter. Because can I really look out on this crowd and expect to be telling absolutely any of you for the first time ever, that much of the Star Wars Mythology is rumored to be tied to the real, ancient history of our own Solar System and indeed, Galaxy? Of course not. Iapetus So, back to that why.   The why is this. Comics along with their counterparts, middle and long form graphic novels, and in an adjacent dimension things like Anime/CG Features and Many types of video games, movies and TV in all its modern streaming forms (Gravity Falls, Anyone?)- ancient meta myths are again and again encoded back into our minds, hearts, and souls. This, that we may not lose a crucially important, impossible to contain, largley made up but nevertheless true history of Human Kind.  Encompassed within this True, living history of Humanity, are all the warnings our ancestors have left behind for us, and every virtue they likewise recognized. Distilling these virtues into Heroes and Anti-Heroes. Titans, Gods, Saints and Demigods- they are our first exemplars of a conflicted soul, beings who often embody two equally compelling, to themselves virtuous (Because what Bad Actor really thinks they are the Villian?) halves, intent on the destruction of the other half with a righteous conviction.  The themes, personalities, and depth of the timelines of Earth’s deep historical mysteries lends itself beautifully to being told out in bits and pieces, over a course of years, right inside the richly expressive visual medium of Comics. You’re seeing images I’m sharing on the screen with you now, some from film sure, but these days these realms intermingle as much as the story genres listed earlier did in the pages of magazines with names like “Tales of Amazement”. (Pause) I also brought books from my own collection today, sitting on this table before me that I barely had to go digging into to come up with examples that corroborate this entire argument. We’re don’t have time for them today but trust me when I say they are in your collections as well. Speaking of which, Some of you are, no doubt, thinking of examples in your own life of the different “Glitch in the Matrix” moments you may have been fortunate enough to experience, when some book, movie, game or another cracked a whole new fissure open up in your mind, sending you to another layer, a new level of your own journey into the explorations of questions like “Why are these myths repeated everywhere to this day?” “How can a materialistic, -not in that way! Secular, scientific leaning, western educated person rationally deal with the fact that the harder and harder we push the boundaries of conventional physics, they always get wonky and break down spectacularly in the end. Or at least our calculations do- This is especially true when we try to conceptualize any means of moving about the universe at any appreciable percentage of the speed of light.  Despite being an apparent vacuum, we’re unable to figure out how to accelerate a ship of any size, even that of a BB, through space up to even a few tenths of a percentage point of the speed of light. Again, you can research that yourselves, we’ve all got supercomputers in our pockets. The point is that this limitation has always been held up to us by Scientists, the Media, etc as the reason nobody has ever journeyed here even if there were Intelligent Alien life out there. Oh, and of course, everybody knows there’s nobody out there, amirite? OK. Pretty sure we only have 30 minutes today and that’s fine! We’re just having a peek, right? A primer, if it can even be called that. We’re pondering this thing together that we’ve already identified, and we should keep doing so, in my opinion. Now, let’s list off a few more strictly comic book based examples of heavy amounts of disclosure or symbolism right off the top of my head as I write the following listicle, I’m kidding it’s just a list- I just like saying listicle- and sort of categorize them under their general theme or themes. Superman- Ultimate Male Physical and Moral Archetype, Western Edition. Is nevertheless an alien, and hails from a mysterious world with its own eerie mythology. Space Hercules, if you will. Savior type figure. Wonder Woman- Sculpted from clay by her mother Hippolyta, Wonder Woman is the Super Powered Princess of a race of themselves fearsome warrior women, the Amazons. The Amazon race has Atlantean roots according to the Wonder Woman mythology. Her name, Diana- tells us she is God like, harkening back to the Roman Goddess Diana, known to the Greeks before that as Artemis, Goddess of Hunting and childbirth.   Thor- Greatest of  Warriors, The Norse God of Thunder, Son of Odin and Brother to Loki, the trickster, archetypical joker and dark sorcerer of one of the world’s oldest pantheons.   Finally, The Watchmen- Costumed Not Actually Super Heroes exist in a world that has Incarcerated, “retired”, or subjugated them into service for “The Man”. A few holdouts, diminished Has Beens to a one, must fight for their own liberty while saving The World from one of their own. Key archetypes include Dr. Manhattan, a Quantum Being, a shapeshifting and teleporting Man-God. Moloch, an arch villain with the name of a Dark God and a Demonic physical aspect. Ozymandias- the groups Erstwhile former “Captain”, and ultimate Foe, whose very name is the Greek label for the Pharaoh Ramses II Huh- looking back up at that now, it is kind of a listicle! We could go on.  I don’t think we have the time however, and I like to think the point has almost been made. Call me what you must, but if you’ve sat here with me this long, and as I type these words I don’t know if I’ll be sitting here alone by now or perhaps this entire time-  but I hope you’ll call me a friend- I’m asking you to keep looking at the symbols. Keep finding the hidden subtext that’s layered into every book you love so much, somewhere. Because it’s there for a reason, it’s performing its job, and it is in service to us all.  Wait- what? Isn’t this the part where you’re supposed to warn us away from all this pagan and paranormal -that we haven’t even scratched the surface of- bullshit and go to church, Steve?! Nah Fam, I’m saying there’s mountains of material out there, a lot of it bad, much of it wildly inaccurate even when well intentioned. That’s ok though, you can handle all that!  Just keep reading. And maybe, keep listening. But don’t forget to also sit a while in reflection, too.. And always remember to smoke indica, and do shit anyway. We’re treating for both!  We built the Harbor freight 6x8 Greenhouse and it’s awesome! The plan for this is to use it in the fall and spring to extend and begin the season in a better place. We continue to learn about living soil, beneficial microbes and nematodes, as well as how to apply neem seed meal and epsom salt in the garden.  We are also learning about Companion Planting and Cover crops for nitrogen fixing.   Cuttings taken from Lake of Fire last month have rooted, and we are rehabilitating established beds and amending with heavy duty firepower from Local Soil Supplier Carpinito Bros. Baked and Awake Episode 29 Saturday February 10th 2018 Canna Industry Updates and More   Opening comments- There will be no pitches today on the podcast. No shoutouts (although since I wrote them out they will still be in the notes). No exhortations to buy T Shirts to support the show or to write reviews anywhere.  In fact, the most important part of this entire episode is happening right now and will be over in a moment. I honestly won’t be mad at anyone for turning the show off the moment I’m through- although there is content to follow the words I am about to say. Thank you all, as always- for being here, and for listening.   This episode is dedicated to the memory of a member of my family, taken from us too soon, due to the ravages of drug addiction. This family member was deeply loved during her short, painful life, and she loved back fiercely in return. She will be dearly missed by those closest to her, and those of us who wish we knew her better while we had the chance.  Her name was Madison Haack, and she was just Twenty Two years old, and beautiful. I cannot bring myself to turn this short moment of recognition of a life into an opportunity to soapbox about the dangers of Opiates in all their forms, or the potential efficacy of Cannabis as an alternative to such things in a person’s life. Perhaps we may save all that talk for another day though, when we have the benefit of time and healing between ourselves and this moment.     Let it be enough for now to say that I was reminded today of the value of life. I was reminded of what my two boys mean to me, and I thought about my 5 year old Son Ken, who already shows signs of anxiety and complex emotions that sometimes resemble depression. DEPRESSION. In a 5 year old (and yes, we are looking into family therapy for help in dealing with it). I thought of my own siblings who I love so much, and the challenges they all have faced and continue to face in their lives, most of them parents themselves of young families. I was reminded that Opiates are literally everywhere around us, and that the so called “Opioid Crisis” that is so often talked about on TV these days is fucking real. SO real. And so much closer to us all than we dare to imagine.  I’ll stop here.  It’s enough for now and a hastily conceived mini speech. It does Madison NO honor to treat this as a throwaway topic, or as a moment to leverage for any purposes other than to express my love, and sadness, for both her and the loving, beautiful family who now mourns her loss.   I will leave a few links in the show notes to resources on Drug Addiction Recovery and Treatment. I hope to God none of you listening, now or later on- is personally struggling with this yourselves.  But maybe you know someone who is. We all know sometimes a person can’t be helped until and unless they WANT to be, but we can be ready to help them when they ask. Or we can be one of the ones to ask THEM, “Can I help?”   We will be talking about hard drug addiction and it’s costs more in the future of this show.   Madison, wherever you are right now, I hope you are at peace, and out of pain. It’s every corporate retreat you’ve ever been to where huge obstacle courses are erected in unlikely green belts. It’s trust falls and people giving monologues on the early traumas that haunt them in their daily lives, or perhaps sharing the traumas they dole out now in the form of personal failures, recounting of petty fights with loved ones, or worse.  In some ways, it will remind those of us brought up in The Church of elements we encountered there- of our own Pastors, Ministers, and Priests and their sermons, some more ominous than others in their import- or of our own times confessing our sins either on our knees in the church pews, or perhaps in the confessional if you were raised Roman Catholic.     This is a lot more than just corporate retreats, although that is an enormous and important part of Landmark Forum and Landmark Education’s business model- it’s everyone from Gary Vee to Tony Robbins to Dr. Oz, and on down the line. Are you in love with TED Talks? Perhaps Deepak Chopra or Wayne Dyer is more your speed. Doesn’t matter. Same diff.  You may begin to see where I’m going here.  Shoot- we’re not even done!  To jump the tracks and land in a parallel lane, we have reductionist materialist Pundits such as Richard Dawkins, Jonathan Haidt, Christopher Hitchens and more who made careers on the back of the need for explanation and “solving” of some of life’s greatest questions. These modern day Nietsche’s are even more ubiquitous- Neil DeGrasse Tyson? Bill Nye? I mean, as far as I’m concerned there’s an arc there and they are on the curve. The light weight, Pop Culture end of the spectrum that tells us that Man is both the most clever thing that has ever walked on two legs and has eyes to see- and that the fact that is the case in NO way is to be mistaken for evidence of a Grand Design, an Omnipotent and Omnipresent Loving God, or any OTHER overt meaning, purpose, whatsoever.   Why talk about it though?  Because I went through one of the weekend long “Communication Workshops” once, and at the time experienced much of the elation and seeming transformation that was promised by the Landmark Recruiting event, itself of course one of the ubiquitous to Landmark bait and switch “Graduation Ceremonies”.  Having experienced it and more or less enjoyed it, escaping un-recruited to further levels of “Advanced training”- it felt Cultish, and at the same time AMWAY like- you’re supposed to enroll in expensive further training, and simultaneously recruit friends and family into the Landmark Communication Workshops because if they don’t also learn the Landmark secret, you’ll inevitably drift away from them as they wallow in their ignorance while you live in the Landmark NOW. For all these reasons, it sparks my Spider Sense all over again now, as it did then- and seems like something worth talking about, perhaps even caution you about.  EST and Werner Erhard had early connections to L Ron Hubbard and the Church of Scientology- to the extent that The Church of Scientology harassed and generally fucked with Erhard, threatening him after his own early split from the Church. Concerns- The Integrity trap/sales pitch.  If you “Believe” in the transformative power of the Forum, you’ll recruit and enroll your family and friends into this training. The training is never cheap, and only gets more costly as you advance to the higher levels. The Facts of Membership • A numerical record was kept (Acts 2:37-47) • Records were kept of widows (I Tim. 5:3-16) • Elections were conducted (Acts 6:1-6) • Discipline was carried out (Matt. 18:15-20; I Cor. 5; Gal. 6:1) • Elders will be held accountable for members (Heb. 13:17) • There was an awareness of who was a church member (Rom. 16:1-16) With the help of the Holy Spirit, the church leadership covenants the following: 1. We commit ourselves to lovingly caring for you and seeking your growth in Christ (Heb. 13:17; I Thes. 5:12). 2. We covenant to provide teaching, preaching and counsel from the Scriptures (Gal. 6:6; I Tim. 5:17-18). 3. We commit that this teaching will span the whole counsel of God's Word (Acts 20:27-28). 4. We commit to helping you in times of need (Acts 2:42-47, 4:32-35, Jm. 2:14- 17). I have read and understood MH doctrinal statement and agree to not be divisive to its teaching. I also understand the importance of submission to church leadership and will be diligent to preserve unity and peace (Hebrews 13:7, 17; Ephesians 4:1-3) 3. I will endeavor to maintain a close relationship with the Lord through regular personal Bible reading, prayer, fellowship and practice of the other spiritual disciplines. My journey in Christ will be evident through my regular participation in the corporate worship services, and involvement in a small group or class (Ps. 119:97, 105l; Acts 2:42-47; Hebrews 10:23-25). 4. I will strive to properly manage the resources God has given me, including my time, body, gifts and talents, attitudes, finances and possessions (Eph.5:15-18; Romans 12:1-2; Ephesians 4:1-16; Gal 5:22-26; Proverbs 3:9-10). I covenant to practice the humility and sacrificial attitude of Christ by considering the needs of others (Philippians 2:1-11), not gossiping (Pr. 16:28, Matt.18: 15-17), and seeking spiritual friendships (Pr. 17:17). 8. I covenant to have friendly Christian relationships with brothers and sisters in Christ from other churches, but I will not function in leadership or as a member in another church family (Hebrews 13:17). 9. I covenant to follow the biblical procedures of church discipline, and submit myself to discipline if the need should ever arise (Matt. 18:15-17,Gal. 6:1-5). 10. I covenant to submit to the authority of the Scriptures as the final arbiter on all issues (Psalm 119, 2 Tim. 3:16-17). God enabling me, I will strive to consider my commitment to this Membership Covenant on a yearly basis. Rumors of Violence, Poor treatment, Suicide, and even murder pervade the history of the facility. Despite the persistence of these stories, Seattle seems to have all but forgotten this dark portion of its children’s history. Sterile though the historical timeline below this essay may be, this School has a story that is still trying to be told, with locals bearing witness to having heard strange noises, the sounds of running footsteps, and even screams on the grounds, today a city park. These spirits, if that’s what they are, as further said to inhabit the trees, some of which are clearly almost a century old, and rumored to have been planted by patients/inmates of the “School”.  Bullies and would be Muggers etc seem to fall victim to the ghosts, while troubled teens, particularly teenage girls are said to derive a dark sense of comfort from them. While I’ve so far been unable to find a record of the school’s darker side that names names or gives specifics of who dies when and how- I think that is perhaps a little less important, and no more scary to hear about, than to simply recall what routinely went on in State run institutions of this sort throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. While the normal world turned slowly around them, patients of Asylums, Conservatoriums, Hospitals, University Hospitals, and more were regularly experimented upon. Sometimes with therapeutic aims, other times, the motivations were much less clear.
