In this episode, I'm joined by Jimmy Casas—best-selling author, leadership coach, and former award-winning principal. Jimmy and I dive into his incredible journey from bar manager to one of the most recognized school leaders in the country. We unpack the power of origin stories, the traps of superhero leadership, and why leaders must know who they want to be in order to lead effectively.Jimmy shares how Culturize became the game-changing book it is today, why so many school leaders fall into “fixer” mode, and how coaching has changed the game for him and countless leaders. We also talk about the evolving landscape of school leadership, the importance of building leadership capacity, and his belief that culture is caused—by adults, not students.Whether you're early in your leadership journey or a seasoned veteran, this conversation is packed with practical insights, authentic reflection, and coaching wisdom that will inspire and equip you to lead with clarity and purpose.

Andersen, a high school American Sign Language (ASL) teacher at Ocean City High School in Cape May County, has been named the 2018 New Jersey State Teacher of the Year. Andersen, who was named the 2017-18 Cape May County Teacher of the Year in the spring, grew up in Cape May County. She earned a bachelor’s degree in flute performance from Indiana University and a mas- ter’s degree in deaf education from McDaniel College. Andersen also achieved national board certification in Exceptional Needs Specialist: Deaf/Hard of Hearing. After nine years in Boston, Massachusetts as a teacher of the deaf, she returned to New Jersey in 2004 to raise a family. It was then, with 42 students, that Andersen began the ASL program at Ocean City High School. Community oriented activities, such as ASL socials at local coffee shops and evening performances that raise funds for scholarships immerse students in deaf culture helping them to build confidence. In the past three years alone, more than 85 percent of her students have achieved the NJ Seal of Biliteracy. Her popular and respected program has inspired a number of students to pursue ASL-related careers, including interpreting for Michelle Obama and Madonna. Ocean City’s ASL program is unique, especially in the way Andersen connects her students to the deaf community nationwide. Ocean City has become a strong community that is now accessible to hearing and deaf visitors because of Andersen’s students. Andersen is a nationally recognized educator who began her career teaching deaf children to fall in love with reading. She now teaches hearing children to fall in love with ASL. Among her many recognitions, Andersen was named the 2014 ASL Teacher of the Year and was honored by the New Jersey Association for the Deaf and Atlantic County Society for the Deaf. In 2015, “Classroom Close-Up NJ” highlighted her program after her students’ ASL anti-bullying video went viral. As Ocean City’s Teacher of the Year, Andersen was featured in the NJ School Board Association’s School Leader and was recently honored by the National Liberty Museum with the Teacher as Hero: Exceptional Teacher Award. Andersen has made a difference in the lives of her students, and she serves as a model for teachers throughout the country. She ignites her students’ passion for learning, gives them a voice and shows them their voice is valuable. Andersen’s students go out into the world as lifelong learners making bridges between cultures, embracing differences in those around them, and changing lives as they go.  Show Hosts Sean Spiller Sean Spiller, a high school science teacher in the Wayne public schools, is vice president of the New Jersey Education Association. Welcome to Member Voices, an NJEA Podcast.  In this episode, we welcome 2018-19 New Jersey State Teacher of the Year Jennifer Skomial on the program. This weeks question is: Question:   How Important Are Teacher Training Programs?  Follow our Hosts Sean M. Spiller | @SpillerForNJEA Jeff Bradbury | @JeffBradbury About Our Guest: Jennifer Skomial Jennifer Skomial is a Career and Technical Education Teacher at Morris County School of Technology and the 2018-19 New Jersey State Teacher of the Year. Jennifer Skomial, like many others in the profession, has always wanted to be a teacher. Her earliest memories include “playing school” with her younger brother, whom she needed to bribe to have a willing student. Not a day went by that she wasn’t eagerly practicing what she believes has been her life’s purpose. Jennifer is driven to encourage more students to go into the teaching field that she holds so dear.  While many of the students she works with may not become early-childhood teachers, she knows that the exposure she provides them through hands-on experience in the on-site preschool, field trips, and guest speakers will help them determine their future paths.   Subscribe to Member Voices We are proud to be listed in the iTunes Directory. How closely do you monitor your own mindset? To what degree are you self-aware in regards to your own tendencies to be either fixed or growth mindset in nature? How have you taken action to transform yourself both personally and professionally? In today’s episode, Eric Sheninger, a Senior Fellow at the International Center For Leadership in Education, opens up about the transformation of his own mindset a few years back when he was the principal at New Milford High School in New Jersey. As a result of this transformation, Eric and the great team that he surrounded himself with all played a pivotal part in re-creating the culture of the school by getting all stakeholders to embrace and embed the use of social media and technology as major tools in the learning process. One must wonder and be curious about the steps that Eric took in re-inventing the school and its’ culture. In our conversation, Eric deconstructs the success that he had by identifying specific strategies that he and his team put into action. It is these exact strategies that any educator can apply to their own work if they open themselves up to the possibilities that exist within their day-to-day teaching and leadership. Regardless of your role in education, there is no question you will leave this episode feeling inspired and motivated to be a change maker in your own work space.   Eric’s belief is that gratitude is about ‘paying it forward’. Everything that we do in education is about paying it forward in a way that honors the potential that we have to be genuine difference-makers in the world. When paying it forward, not only do we benefit both personally and professionally, but we also have the ability to change the lives of those who matter most — the students in our schools. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Eric Sheninger. About Eric Eric is a Senior Fellow and Thought Leader on Digital Leadership with the International Center for Leadership in Education (ICLE).  Prior to this, he was the award-winning Principal at New Milford High School.  Under his leadership, his school became a globally recognized model for innovative practices.  Eric oversaw the successful implementation of several sustainable change initiatives that radically transformed the learning culture at his school while increasing achievement. His work focuses on leading and learning in the digital age as a model for moving schools and districts forward. This has led to the formation of the Pillars of Digital Leadership, a framework for all educators to initiate sustainable change to transform school cultures.  As a result, Eric has emerged as an innovative leader, best-selling author, and sought after speaker.  His main focus is purposeful integration of technology to facilitate student learning, improve communications with stakeholders, enhance public relations, create a positive brand presence, discover opportunity, transform learning spaces, and help educators grow professionally. Eric has received numerous awards and acknowledgments for his work. He is a CDE Top 30 award recipient, Bammy Award winner, NASSP Digital Principal Award winner, PDK Emerging Leader Award recipient, winner of Learning Forward's Excellence in Professional Practice Award, Google Certified Innovator, Adobe Education Leader, and ASCD 2011 Conference Scholar.  He has authored and co-authored the following:     BrandED: Tell Your Story, Build Relationships, and Empower Learning (coming soon) Uncommon Learning: Creating Schools That Work for Kids Digital Leadership: Changing Paradigms for Changing Times Communicating and Connecting With Social Media: Essentials for Principals What Principals Need to Know About Teaching and Learning Science Connect With Eric: Twitter: @E_Sheninger Website: http://ericsheninger.com/esheninger?sid=28 Themes Discussed: Technology, Innovation, Teacher Empowerment, Student Agency, Fixed vs. Growth Mindset, Transformation, School Culture,

Classroom 2.0 LIVE webinar, Matt Miller, September Featured Teacher, Sept. 12, 2015. We are so excited to have Matt Miller on Classroom 2.0 LIVE as our Featured Teacher for the month of September! This will be an excellent opportunity to learn about some of the great ways Matt is effectively integrating technology into his HS Spanish classroom and the amazing advice and tips he shares about going paperless in his classroom. Matt is a high school Spanish teacher at Turkey Run High School in Marshall, Ind. His classes are very conversational and technology-laden, and he doesn't use textbooks (and hasn't since about 2009). He writes at the Ditch That Textbook blog (www.ditchthattextbook.com), usually about technology in the classroom, creative teaching and instruction with less reliance on the textbook. After trying to do the traditional “teach by the textbook” for a few years, he launched into a textbook-less path where learning activities were often custom-produced for his students as well as infused with technology. He likes the results a lot, and his students do, too. He’s a proud graduate of Indiana State University (go Sycamores!) and lives the dream — a wife, three kids, a mortgage and two dogs.
