    Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard

Tommy Lee (Tommyland Rides Again, The Dirt, Shout at the Devil) is the co-founder of Mötley Crüe, a legendary drummer, and rock icon. Tommy joins Armchair Expert to discuss growing up between Greece and California, finding refuge as an introvert behind a drum kit, and how ballet unexpectedly shaped his future as a performer. Tommy and Dax talk about dropping out of high school after landing a record deal, building Mötley Crüe from the Sunset Strip to worldwide fame, and the band's decision to get sober together before recording Dr. Feelgood. Tommy explains why fame can be profoundly isolating, how bonsai trees became his greatest form of meditation, and why the life people envy isn't always the life they're imagining.Check Allstate first for a quote that could save you hundreds: https://www.allstate.com/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Van Halen's Diamond Dave perfectly named the symbolic episode, as those who take the devil's bargain end up having to run for the rest of their lives, especially in Hollywood. Messages in music lyrics and symbols paint a darker picture of the true nature of the entertainment industry. Washington D.C. has a Satanic thread running through the halls of power, as it always has. Behind the scenes, the American government has long been controlled by the darkest forces imaginable, connected through pedophilia, rituals, and blackmail. Dismissing the power and pervasiveness of Satanism in American society should be avoided.---Macroaggressionswww.Macroaggressions.ioMerch StoreLink Tree Video ChannelsRumble | YouTube | BrighteonActivist PostNewsletter Sign UpAudiobooksHypocrazyThe Octopus of Global ControlSupport Our SponsorsReplace Your Mortgage: www.WipeOutYourMortgageNow.comGround Luxe Grounding MatsC60 Power | Promo Code: MACROChemical Free Body | Promo Code: MACROWise Wolf Gold & SilverLegalShield: www.DontGetPushedAround.comChristian Yordanov's Health ProgramThe Dollar VigilanteNesa's Hemp | Promo Code: MACROAugason Farms

Gettysburg is remembered as the bloodiest battle ever fought on American soil. More than 51,000 men became casualties in just three days. But when the armies marched away, they left behind far more than broken fences and shattered lives. Hospitals overflowed with the dying. Mass graves disappeared beneath the earth. Families returned to homes stained with blood. Today, visitors still report phantom soldiers, silent field hospitals, mysterious figures among the rocks of Devil's Den, and an elevator that seems to open onto the summer of 1863. Tonight, we separate history from folklore and explore why Gettysburg remains America's most haunted battlefield.   HAH DISCORD - https://discord.com/invite/bJdbpH3hQm       YouTube -  https://www.youtube.com/@HauntedAmericanHistory   TikTok - @hah_podcast hauntedamericanhistory.com       Patreon- https://www.patreon.com/hauntedamericanhistory       LINKS FOR MY DEBUT NOVEL, THE FORGOTTEN BOROUGH       Barnes and Noble -   https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-forgotten-borough-christopher-feinstein/1148274794?ean=9798319693334   AMAZON: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FQPQD68S   Ebook   GOOGLE: https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=S5WCEQAAQBAJ&pli=1   KOBO: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-forgotten-borough-2?sId=a10cf8af-5fbd-475e-97c4-76966ec87994&ssId=DX3jihH_5_2bUeP1xoje_   SMASHWORD: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/1853316       !! The news got so absurd this week that we're doing a light episode, and it's still somehow about a captured government.Robin breaks down the domestic news stories you can't believe are real: the FDA apologized to Taylor Farms, a million-dollar MAGA donor, in the middle of a cyclospora outbreak that has sickened 7,000 Americans with explosive diarrhea tied to Taco Bell lettuce, while RFK Jr. ignores Jon Ossoff's letter about the gutted CDC surveillance program that should have caught it.Also this episode: Andrew and Tristan Tate arrested by US Marshals in Miami, facing 59 UK rape and human trafficking charges and doing their perp walk in tan jail jumpsuits. Trump's Iran war hits month five of a promised six weeks, with 17 American service members dead, as Rep. Carlos Gimenez calls it "the nature of warfare." Plus Trump crashing Spain's World Cup trophy celebration, the Qatari Air Force One getting "maxed out" over security problems, Kash Patel planning an FBI director trip to Moscow hosted by the FSB, 50 percent tariffs on Canadian hockey sticks, Pete Hegseth's Pentagon plan to hide unclassified records from FOIA, Megyn Kelly's 12-minute Michelle Obama rant, the racist MAGA meltdown over Lupita Nyong'o and Elliot Page in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey (which just posted the biggest opening of 2026 anyway), John Fetterman's Israel red line, Bill Maher saying yes to JD Vance, and Lindsey Graham's Senate seat passing to his sister Darline Graham Nordone like a family heirloom.Political commentary with receipts, three times a week. Adam Aizer plays devil's advocate as he challenges Jamey Eisenberg and Dave Richard's top sleepers, breakouts, and busts for 2026. We kick things off with Patrick Mahomes as a sleeper (9:03), debating whether his current ADP creates value while weighing his injury concerns and the state of Kansas City's wide receiver room. News and notes includes a Cam Skattebo backflip (19:09). Next, it's bust season as the crew debates whether De'Von Achane (24:10) can overcome Miami's offensive concerns and if Davante Adams (32:52) can keep finding the end zone as his age increases. Adam also questions the week-to-week consistency of Zay Flowers (41:04), forcing Jamey to make his case for the Ravens top receiver. We wrap things up with running backs Omarion Hampton (46:15) & Kenneth Gainwell (58:48), discussing Mike McDaniel's influence as Hampton's new offensive coordinator and whether Bucky Irving will limit Gainwell's fantasy upside in Tampa.Fantasy Football Today is available for free on the Audacy app as well as Apple Podcasts, Spotify and wherever else you listen to podcastsWatch FFT on YouTube SUBSCRIBE to FFT Dynasty on AppleFOLLOW FFT Dynasty on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2aHlmMJw1m8FareKybdNfG?si=8487e2f9611b4438&nd=1

The Devil's Ledger | Week of July 20, 2026 This week on The Devil's Ledger, we celebrate an unforgettable month of football, explore one of the eeriest true crime deceptions of the digital age, conclude a haunting summer novella, and revisit two of the most compelling criminal investigations we've covered this year. We begin by congratulating Spain on capturing its second FIFA World Cup title after a thrilling championship match, while tipping our hats to North America for hosting one of the greatest sporting events the world has ever seen. Then, in The Creepiest Thing I Heard This Week, Branden examines the chilling murder of Gretchen Anthony and one of the most disturbing realities of the digital age: how a killer continued communicating with friends and family using the victim's own phone after her death. In a world where our phones have become extensions of ourselves, what happens when someone else begins speaking in your voice? On The Devil Within, Campfire Files comes to its unforgettable conclusion with The House That Hadn't Been Emptied. An Arizona couple's peaceful vacation along the rocky coast of Maine ends with a locked room, a mysterious caretaker, and a suitcase that somehow knows exactly who it's waiting for. It's a quiet, literary ghost story about memory, history, and the unsettling possibility that some houses never truly let their guests leave. Over on Criminal Mischief, Carolyn Ossorio concludes her investigation into the Pike County Massacre, following investigators as they unravel one of the most shocking murder conspiracies in modern American history after nearly an entire family was executed in a single night. On The Slippery, Scott and Nancy revisit a case they've pursued for nearly a decade: the 2006 murder of Doris Worrell. Following a dramatic arrest in 2025, they examine new evidence surrounding an alleged murder-for-hire plot that may finally bring long-awaited answers. Finally, in This Week in Horror, we recommend The Bay, a tense open-water survival thriller that proves the ocean can still be one of the scariest places on Earth. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay alert. You never know what's waiting around the next corner... or beneath the surface. We'll see you this week across the Evio Creative Universe. In This Episode • ⚽ Congratulations to Spain on winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup. •

UNEARTHED ARCANA - EVEN MORE VILLAINOUS OPTIONS: Evil Gets a Second Draft

    The RPGBOT.Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 20, 2026 74:49

We return to Wizards of the Coast's Villainous Options, now revised after the first round was lovingly pushed down the stairs by public feedback. Some subclasses survived untouched. Some got a makeover. Some were taken behind the shed, especially the Primordial Patron, which had one great idea and the mechanical confidence of a wet napkin. Good news, though: the demon sorcerer finally feels demonic, the Titan Druid is now a proper kaiju tank, and the Hell Knight has upgraded from flaming disappointment to legally playable infernal gambling problem. Show Notes This episode revisits Wizards of the Coast's latest Unearthed Arcana update for Villainous Options, which means the crew returns to the scene of the crime to see what survived the feedback cycle, what got rewritten, and what was quietly removed from the suspect board. The earlier Villainous Options episodes gave us some strong concepts with mixed execution: villainous path feats like the Death Knight and Lich, subclasses like the Titan Druid and Hell Knight, and later options like the Path of Lament Barbarian, Pestilence Cleric, Venom Monk, and the now-defenestrated Primordial Patron Warlock. Some of those were apparently well-liked enough to move forward with little public revision. Others came back covered in red ink and shame. The episode opens by sorting out what is not in the new UA. Path of Lament, Pestilence Cleric, and Venom Monk appear to have landed well enough that they did not need another public pass, though the hosts still have a few lingering concerns about capstones, wording, and whether weaponized sadness is legally distinct from being a barbarian with theater kid energy. The Death Knight and Lich villain paths also seem likely to continue, though Ash remains skeptical that the Lich is as ready as WotC apparently thinks it is. The Primordial Patron, meanwhile, is gone for now, which hurts because the concept rules, but the subclass itself never really delivered on the fantasy of making a pact with an ancient elemental apocalypse. Then the real revisions begin with Circle of the Titan Druid, which gets a much-needed identity check. The old version wanted to be a giant monster but had all the durability of a parade float in a hailstorm. The new version leans harder into tanking: better AC, more temporary hit points, stronger damage scaling, a shorter but more practical Titan form duration, and a capstone swallow ability that finally feels like being eaten by a kaiju instead of being mildly inconvenienced by one. Behemoth and Insectoid both look more playable, with Insectoid getting a strong healing identity, while Leviathan still mostly answers the question, "What if your subclass feature was swimming?" Hell Knight also gets a major facelift, mostly by reducing its dependence on rolling exactly the right number before anything interesting happens. The infernal wounds now feel more like a real subclass engine, with rider effects that happen more consistently and Devil's Luck upgrades when the dice cooperate. It is much better than before, but the table still finds it a little too constrained by resources and a little too enamored with gambling mechanics. It is no longer borderline unplayable, which is progress, but it may still need another pass before it becomes the infernal fighter fantasy everyone clearly wants. The big winner is Demonic Sorcery. The previous version felt like a melee sorcerer with terrible life choices, a bad spell list, and an aura table that made everyone remember why random subclass tables are rarely fun. The revision gives it Abyssal Rupture, a movable sphere of demonic problems that pulls enemies around, creates battlefield control, scales into difficult terrain, and eventually supports summon fiend in a way that finally screams Abyss instead of discount Hexblade with a concussion. The spell list is also dramatically better, replacing nonsense like Hallow and overused Misty Step with options that fit the theme and support the playstyle. It still needs damage scaling on the rupture, but this is the rare UA glow-up where the hosts go from roasting the thing to wanting to play it. The episode also touches on the new feats and epic boons, which range from charming people by picking their pockets to setting better hunting traps to becoming weirdly hard to fool, possess, or kill with necrotic damage. The hosts speculate about what book this material is actually building toward, with possibilities ranging from a renamed Book of Vile Darkness to an evil campaign supplement, a fiendish planar guide, or something tied to the Abyss and Nine Hells. Whatever it becomes, the consensus is cautiously positive: WotC seems to be listening, the revisions are mostly moving in the right direction, and the demon sorcerer finally has enough flavor to stop apologizing for itself. Key Takeaways This UA is a feedback-driven revision of the previous Villainous Options material, not a totally new batch of evil toys. Path of Lament Barbarian, Pestilence Cleric, and Venom Monk appear to have been received well enough that they did not return for major public revision. The Death Knight and Lich villain paths seem likely to continue, though the hosts still think Lich needs more work and Death Knight may get broadened for more martial builds. The Primordial Patron Warlock is gone for now, which is sad because the idea is excellent, but the original execution did not feel like a pact with an elemental world-ending horror. Circle of the Titan Druid is much stronger now and has a clearer role as the tanky kaiju druid. Titan Druid's improved AC, temporary hit points, damage scaling, and better swallow feature make the subclass feel much closer to its fantasy. Behemoth looks solid, Insectoid now has a meaningful healer/tank angle, and Leviathan still feels like the one you pick because the campaign has too much water. Hell Knight is much better because infernal wounds now do interesting things more consistently instead of asking players to roll a six before the subclass becomes fun. Hell Knight still feels too resource-limited and may need another pass, especially if the goal is to make infernal wounds feel like the subclass's real engine. Demonic Sorcery is the standout winner of the revision. The new Abyssal Rupture gives Demonic Sorcery a strong identity built around battlefield control, forced movement, difficult terrain, and demon-flavored chaos. The Demonic Sorcery spell list is dramatically improved and now actually supports the theme instead of asking why a demon sorcerer has Hallow. The hosts like the revised Demonic Sorcery enough that it went from "why would I play this?" to "I would play this immediately." The new feats and epic boons are more mechanically interesting than expected, with a few strong options for social manipulation, traps, protection, and high-level anti-undead or anti-illusion play. The likely future product may be an evil campaign book, a spiritual successor to Book of Vile Darkness, or a broader fiendish/planar supplement. Overall verdict: WotC appears to be listening, the revisions are mostly better, and the villains are finally getting options that do more than look cool while failing their own saving throw. Have life's disappointments made it harder to trust God? In today's Crosswalk Devotional, we explore Matthew 13:20-21 and Jesus' parable of the rocky soil, revealing how hardship can quietly harden our hearts if we're not careful. Even when suffering, betrayal, or unanswered prayers shake our faith, God invites us to return to Him and rediscover the trust that trials may have stolen. Difficult seasons can leave us questioning God's goodness, but Scripture reminds us that He is never the author of evil. He is the Redeemer who works through every circumstance for our good and His glory. No matter how rocky your heart may feel today, God's grace can soften it again, allowing hope, faith, and new spiritual growth to take root. Highlights: Discover what Jesus teaches about rocky soil and a heart that struggles to trust during hardship. Learn how disappointment can quietly harden our hearts if we don't bring our pain to God. Be reminded that God is never the source of evil but the Redeemer who brings good from brokenness. Find encouragement that trust is restored by remembering God's unchanging character and faithfulness. Understand why bringing your doubts honestly before God is the first step toward renewed faith. Rest in the hope that your story isn't finished—God is still writing it. Join the Conversation Has a difficult season ever challenged your trust in God? Full Transcript Below: How to Restore Trust When You've Lost ItBy Kelly Balarie Bible Reading:“As for what was sown on thin (rocky) soil, this is he who hears the Word and at once welcomes and accepts it with joy; Yet it has no real root in him, but is temporary (inconstant, lasts but a little while); and when affliction or trouble or persecution comes on account of the Word, at once he is caused to stumble [he is repelled and begins to distrust and desert Him Whom he ought to trust and obey] and he falls away.” – Matt. 13:20-21 AMPC Have you ever tried to dig a shovel into rocky soil? It’s torture. Bam! Bam! It’s nearly impossible. To hit rock is to be blocked. One can’t easily plant beautiful flowers when rocky soil blocks the ability to plant new life. The same goes for us when we are on rocky soil. Jesus said, “As for what was sown on thin (rocky) soil, this is he who hears the Word and at once welcomes and accepts it with joy; Yet it has no real root in him, but is temporary (inconstant, lasts but a little while); and when affliction or trouble or persecution comes on account of the Word, at once he is caused to stumble [he is repelled and begins to distrust and desert Him Whom he ought to trust and obey] and he falls away.” (Matt. 13:20-21 AMPC) We become rocky soil when what is hard and tough in life turns us hard and tough in heart. To be hardened to God because of trials and troubles means the soil of our hearts is rocky. Beautiful things can’t be as easily planted within us. This is a problem – for me, I considered, as I read this verse. You see, after reading these words of Jesus, I could now see that the trials and tribulations in my life were causing me to stumble. Because I was beginning to “distrust and desert Him Whom (I) ought to trust and obey.” Wow. God surely knows, I don’t want to fall away. But, after all that I had gone through… all I endured… all I had to endure in relationships… quietly, distrust was stealing my trust – and I knew it.Maybe I’m not alone in this. Maybe you, too, have had shockers in life… shock and awe when you got a medical diagnosis you didn’t expect. Shock when a friend turned to a foe. Shock when a dream suddenly ended. Shock when a child turns away from you. It is easy to lose trust after experiencing the shock of a carpet pulled out from under us. However, we are wise to remember: God is not the orchestrator of evil; He is the one who is for us. God is the one working all things together for good. Both Jesus and the Holy Spirit intercede for us. I once heard a pastor say, “Devil, bad. God, good.” He’s right. God is good. God is just. God works all things together for good as we love Him and are called according to his purpose (Rom. 8:28). God is Redeemer. God is hope. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). God uses even what is hard and bad for good. I can’t give up on God. And, neither can you. I can’t afford to spend even a day away from Him. Trust returns when we remember that God is good. When we believe there is hope. When we repent of unbelief and decide to break up with it. When we remember, He can do the miraculous. When we ponder how God used Jesus and where Jesus sits now, after hardship. God is not what happened to us; God is good. Intersecting Faith & Life: What, in life, has happened to you that has made you lose trust? How have you subtly moved away from God? Can you let your pain go into His hands? Your need – to know? Your desire to have everything perfect today? God is the Author and the Perfector; your story is not done yet. This devotional is an invitation for you – to come back to Him. Homily for Saturday  July 18th 2026 | What is more important: what we have done for God, or what Jesus has done for us? . In this powerful reflection, Fr. Anthony Gramlich, MIC reminds us that the Christian life is not centered on what we have done for God; but on what Jesus Christ has done for us.The devil wants us trapped in self-condemnation, constantly focused on our weaknesses and failures. But Christ invites us to lift our eyes to His Cross, His Divine Mercy, and His Eucharistic Presence. "Lord, I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed."Those words remind us that salvation is not earned; it is received through the mercy of Christ. Today, Jesus invites you to stop staring at your failures and start contemplating His infinite mercy.Fix your eyes on Him. Receive His healing. Let His love transform your heart."He is the One who makes us worthy."Readings for July 18th 2026: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/071826.cfm© 2026 Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception. Doctor Who meets the Devil! No, wait—sorry, the Doctor insists it's actually science. The Dæmons brings the UNIT era to full folk-horror boil, complete with white witches, heat barriers, Morris dancers, one extremely patient gargoyle, and Roger Delgado's Master hiding in plain sight with the diabolical alias “Mr. Magister.” But is this beloved Pertwee classic a perfect fusion of rationalism and vibes, or does its “all magic is science” sermon accidentally sneak magic into Doctor Who through the church crypt? Join us as we summon Azal, praise Bok, admire the Brigadier's five rounds rapid, and ask the only question that matters: has the Master ever looked better in glasses?Give your own rating for The Dæmons on Spotify!Subscribe to our YouTube Channel and become a True Companion of the podcast to get new episodes before everyone else!Subscribe to our newsletter at pulltoopen.net for extended notes on The Dæmons.Support the podcast by becoming a patron of Pull To Open on Patreon. Please review Pull To Open on Apple Podcasts.Timeline:Intro 00:00:00Previously… 00:01:52Whomoji Challenge 00:07:23Poll to Open 00:12:50Comment of the Week 00:16:13TL;DW 00:23:00Review: The Dæmons 00:26:55Four Questions to Doomsday 01:03:05What If the Evil Plot Had Succeeded? 01:05:34Where Is the Clara Splinter? 01:08:51Final Judgment 01:13:43Randomizer! 01:20:33Follow us on:TikTok: @pulltoopenInstagram: @pulltoopen63Facebook: @pulltoopen63X: @pulltoopen63Threads: @pulltoopen63Bluesky: @pulltoopenPlay Pull To Open BingoStory EssentialsSeason 5, Serial 5Story number: 40, per the The Pull To Open CodexWriter: Mervyn Haisman and Henry LincolnDirector: Douglas CamfieldScript Editor: Derrick SherwinProducer: Peter Bryant3 February 1968 – 9 March 1968Pull To Open: The DæmonsSeason 7Episode 16Hosts: Pete Pachal and Chris TaylorMusic: Martin West/Thinking Fish©️AnyWho Media LLC 2026Doctor Who ©️BBC 1963

Jesus Followers Are the Enemy's {devil's} Target to Mess You Up and To Destroy Your Relationship with God MESSAGE SUMMARY:  The enemy {the evil one, the devil} is always at work seeking to destroy the fruit of the Lord's field and your life. In John10:10, Jesus tells us: “The thief {enemy} comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”. In 1 Peter 5:8, Peter tells you more about your enemy who is always with you: “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil {enemy} prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”. Continue to remember that the enemy is always attempting to mess you up and to destroy your witness. Also, the enemy is always attempting to destroy your relationship with God and to get you to reject God. The enemy does his evil in subtle ways, but his purpose is clear -- the enemy wants you off the right path. The enemy is always at work, and he never sleeps.   TODAY'S PRAYER: Father, I confess that when difficulties and trials come into my life, large or small, I mostly grumble and complain. I realize the trials James talks about are not necessarily “walls,” but they are difficult to bear, nonetheless. Fill me with such a vision of a transformed life, O God, that I might actually consider it “pure joy” when you bring trials my way. I believe, Lord. Help my unbelief. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter, Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 94). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be ashamed of the Gospel. I will not be ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes (including me). From Romans 1:16 SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): John10:10-18;1 Peter 5:8-11; Ephesians 4:26-32; Psalms 50b:13-23. A WORD FROM THE LORD WEBSITE: www.AWFTL.org. Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: April, 2021This episode of Weird Darkness turns to Los Angeles, the City of Angels, and the almost overwhelming number of ghosts, haunted hotels, and occult history hiding behind its glamour, from the Magic Castle and the Cecil Hotel to the sex-magick rocket scientist Jack Parsons, cult leader Father Yod, and the ghosts of Griffith Park.It opens inside Hollywood's Magic Castle at 7001 Franklin Avenue, the private clubhouse of the Academy of Magical Arts, where the Houdini Séance Room honors a magician who spent his career trying to debunk spiritualism and left his wife Bess the code phrase "Rosabelle, believe" for contact from the afterlife. The castle carries the story of Irma, the piano-playing ghost said to have died in 1932 and returned to the mansion built in 1909 by Rollin B. Lane, along with the ghost of magician Dai Vernon near his favorite seat in the Palace of Prestidigitation, the unidentified girl in the Haunted Cellar, and a Halloween 2011 fire that started at the exact time of Houdini's 1926 death and gutted the Dante Room while sparing the Houdini Room. From there the episode checks into the haunted hotels of Los Angeles, beginning with the Knickerbocker, which opened in Hollywood in July of 1929, hosted Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio on their honeymoon, and staged Bess Houdini's tenth and final rooftop séance the night an isolated thunderstorm struck the building alone. It moves through the Ambassador on Wilshire Boulevard, where Robert F. Kennedy was gunned down by Sirhan Sirhan in the kitchen on June 4, 1968, the Rosslyn Annex with its forgotten Prohibition speakeasy, the Alexandria and its bricked-off phantom wing, the Biltmore where Elizabeth Short, the Black Dahlia, was last seen before her 1947 murder, and the Cecil Hotel, home to serial killers Richard Ramirez and Jack Unterweger and the site where guest Elisa Lam was found dead in the rooftop water tank in 2013 after guests complained the water tasted strange.Next the episode traces L.A.'s long history of the occult, running from Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard and his early Pasadena partnership with rocket scientist Jack Parsons, who performed the "Babalon Working" ritual and later died at 37 in a home laboratory explosion, to Charles Manson and the Family murders of August 1969 that killed Sharon Tate and six others, Carlos Castaneda and the Yaqui shaman Don Juan Matus who launched the New Age movement, and Jim Baker, the marine turned messiah Father Yod, who took fourteen wives and led the Source Family from a Hollywood Hills mansion. It covers avant-garde filmmaker Kenneth Anger and the witch Marjorie Cameron, the 1920 LAPD raid on the Mazdaznan sun-worshipers, the love-cult of Edith Maida Lessing at Mount Helios, the Devil's Gate Dam in Pasadena, and the curse Petronilla Feliz laid on the land that became Griffith Park. The episode closes with a tour of famous L.A. ghosts: the more than one hundred jumpers off Pasadena's Colorado Street "suicide bridge," including Myrtle Ward, whose daughter survived the fall; the body parts Marines found in a freezer at the abandoned Rancho Los Amigos hospital in 2006; picnic table number 29 in Griffith Park, where a couple was crushed by a falling tree in 1976; Bela Lugosi's hearse drifting past his favorite cigar shop; the many spirits of the Queen Mary docked in Long Beach; the unsolved 1929 deaths of Ned Doheny and Hugh Plunkett at Greystone Mansion; the ghost of Superman actor George Reeves; and Bob Baker, still haunting his marionette theater alongside the dead puppeteers who worked there.

"I feel like before I have the confidence to write in the way that I want to write, where I really own the material, I have to spend so much time with people. I will say at the outset, once I walk someone through what it's going to involve after they say yes to talking to me, I'll say I'm going to be around a lot and you're going to get sick of me," says Pamela Colloff, author of Catch the Devil.Today's guest, I mean, wow, from the bottom of the diaphragm up, wow. It's Pamela Colloff. You know her from her National Magazine Award winning work for Texas Monthly and ProPublica/The New York Times Magazine. She's THE premier investigative reporter in the country and she's now the author of Catch the Devil: A True Story of Murder, Deception, and Injustice on the Gulf Coast. It's published by Knopf. This book upends what you think a true crime story is about where the true villain isn't a person at all. It chronicles, among others, Paul Skalnik, a jailhouse snitch, whose non-credible testimony places numerous men on death row, Jim Dailey, in particular, and Pamela takes us through this riveting narrative and punishing commentary on capital punishment and why Florida seems hellbent on being No. 1 in executions. Here's just a slice of what Pam is about: She is a two-time National Magazine Award winner, once for reporting and once for feature writing. Her work has been adapted for narrative and documentary films including Tower, which was short-listed in 2016 for an Oscar. Her work has been anthologized in Best American Magazine Writing, Best American Crime Reporting, and Next Wave: America's New Generation of Great Literary Journalists. She joined ProPublica/The New York Times Magazine in 2017 after many years at Texas Monthly. Listen, I could go on. You get the gist.In this episode, we talk about: What drew her to Tom Wolfe and Hunter S. Thompson Speaking with Tom Junod The Boys Club of longform writing Her start at Texas Monthly Being a journalism dork The elation and despair How every story is a Rubix cube The Skip Hollandsworth Method Owning the material Knowing when to quote and when not to Idea generation Writing is hard How magazine writing and book writing are different animals Why Catch the Devil is her now-or-never moment Beginnings are the worst Being more disciplined with a book vs. magazine writing Writing in this attention economyPair this episode with Ep. 255 with Maddy Crowell and Ep. 414 with John Rosengren, and many other Atavist true crimey pods, too many to mention here. I'd also chuck in Ep. 224 with Patrick Radden Keefe. He'll be back on the show for the paperback run of London Calling.

Dan has one really big story this week!  We're going to head to Austria's Moosham Castle, a place with an exceptionally dark legacy, even for a castle.  The darkest part of this legacy was forged during one of Europe's most horrifying witch hunts, when 139 innocent people, many of them orphaned and sometimes also disabled children, were tortured and executed in the shadow of a legend known as Wizard Jackl. We start with the history , then we'll look into paranormal claims including a modern encounter. Lynze brings four short stories this week, a nice counterbalance! A story about a college dorm, a possible forest cryptid, a ghost couple and a truly terrible place to run into a shadow person.  LAST EVER Wet Hot Bad Magic Summer Camp 2026: Have you heard?!
