We're diving headfirst into high-flying mayhem with Con Air, a chaotic symphony of explosions, one-liners, and mid-air madness—handpicked by our awesome Patreon supporter Susan from the Geek Girl Soup podcast!Con Air (1997) was born out of the mid-90s action movie boom, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer riding high from previous hits like The Rock and Crimson Tide. Wanting to blend testosterone-fueled chaos with a high-concept premise, Bruckheimer and the team crafted a story about a maximum-security prisoner transport gone wildly off the rails. The script, written by Scott Rosenberg, was inspired in part by a real federal program, but the film quickly ditched realism in favor of bombast and explosions. Simon West, a former music video director making his feature debut, was brought on to direct, bringing a flashy style that matched Bruckheimer's over-the-top vision.The production faced major challenges, especially with the practical effects and large set pieces involving planes, crashes, and convicts with very short fuses. Shot primarily in Utah and Nevada, including sequences at the infamous "Boneyard" in the Mojave Desert, the film used a combination of real aircraft, full-scale models, and miniature effects. Despite the logistical headaches, Con Air brought together a ludicrously stacked cast including Nicolas Cage, John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi, and Ving Rhames. “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!” (Galatians 5:22–23 NLT) Many people have a very pessimistic, cynical outlook on life. Screenwriter John Patrick Shanley wrote this for a character played by actor Nicolas Cage: “We are here to ruin ourselves and break our hearts and love the wrong people and die.” Benjamin Disraeli, the former prime minister of England, came to this conclusion: “Youth is a blunder; manhood a struggle; old age a regret.” Actor George Clooney said, “I don’t believe in happy endings, but I do believe in happy travels, because ultimately, you die at a very young age, or you live long enough to watch your friends die. It is a mean thing, life.” I’m here to tell you that there’s more to our existence in this world than this. Life need not be a series of inevitable bad choices. It need not be a progression of blunder, struggle, and regret. And it doesn’t need to be a mean thing. Jesus said, “My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life” (John 10:10 NLT). Often, when we think about the life that Jesus offers, we think of the next one—how His death on the cross and resurrection makes eternal life possible for those who believe in Him. But as He makes clear in John 10, He transforms our lives in this world as well. Jesus frees us from our slavery to sin and gives us a taste of true freedom. He allows us to experience life as God intends. He makes it possible for us to find real purpose and experience genuine fulfillment in this life. The apostle Paul wrote, “And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago” (Ephesians 1:13 NLT). The Holy Spirit guides us down the paths God would have us go. If we follow His lead, our lives will be transformed. In Galatians 5:22–23, Paul shows us what that transformation involves: “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (NLT). If you were to ask one hundred people what they need most in their lives right now, how many of them would mention one or more of the items on this list? Keep in mind, too, that these fruits grow in all conditions of life. Even without romance, you can grow in love. Even in trying times, you can find joy. One of the devil’s most effective strategies is to convince people that the life Jesus offers is somehow restrictive, boring, or unfulfilling. He tries to distract us with empty, shallow, selfish, and ultimately destructive pursuits. He warps our perspective so that we can’t tell what’s truly meaningful and satisfying in life. In 2012, he directed his first feature, Love, Sex & Missed Connections, an independent comedy that won several festival awards including Best Narrative Feature at the Cleveland International Film Festival and the Special Jury Award for First Time Filmmaker at the Traverse City Film Festival. In 2014, he directed a short film called The Gunfighter that won over two dozen awards including the Audience Award for Best Short at the 2014 Los Angeles Film Festival and was included in the 2015 Saatchi & Saatchi's New Director's Showcase at the Cannes Lions. In 2016, Eric decided to spend more time in television. He edited Black Monday, Rutherford Falls and Pam & Tommy among other shows. He was nominated for an Emmy for his work editing Veep and an ACE Award for his work editing The Good Place. Eric directed his first episode of television for the show Rutherford Falls on Peacock which premiered in June 2022.  He is currently working on a new television show for Amazon based on the Spider-Noir character starring Nicolas Cage. It's coming to Peacock in September.Fox unveiled its fall schedule yesterday, "The Floor", hosted by Rob Lowe will take the time spot for the paused ‘Masked Singer'. Other new shows include "Memory of a Killer", a dramatic thriller starring Patrick Dempsey as a hitman with early onset Alzheimer's, and "Best Medicine", a one-hour comedy starring Josh Charles as a surgeon. Tubi also got to make an announcement, since it's owned by Fox. That announcement was "Breaking Bear", an adult animation series about bears who resort to criminal behavior to save their forest. It features the vocal talents of Brendan Fraser, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Elizabeth Hurley, Josh Gad, and Annie Murphy.Fox is also reviving two classic competition series: "Celebrity Weakest Link" and "Fear Factor: The Next Chapter".Fear Factor is coming back 25 years after the show debuted on NBC. Michael B. Jordan is producing a "Creed" spin-off series called "Delphi". It'll be about young boxers at Adonis Creed's Delphi Boxing Academy.There will be a "Barbershop" series.
