In this episode of Payne Points of Wealth, Bob, Ryan, Chris & Courtney dive into the critical mistakes that could derail your retirement plans. The recent market volatility caused by recent events like tariff announcements can significantly impact returns if you don't make smart decisions with your money. We'll explore three common missteps that investors often make: Doing Too Much: Reacting impulsively to market drops by pulling out investments can lead to missing subsequent recoveries. We'll discuss why staying the course with a comfortable asset allocation is often the better strategy. Did you know that from 2005 through 2024, seven of the S&P 500's 10 best days occurred within two weeks of the 10 worst days? This insight from J.P. Losing Sight of the Big Picture: With money in different retirement plans from job changes to holding your savings with different financial institutions, it's easy to lose track of how your overall portfolio is allocated. We'll explain how streamlining your investment strategy can be a game-changer for reaching your financial goals. Forgetting About Fees: Many investors are unaware of the fees they pay on their respective portfolios, mainly because most of these costs can be hidden. We'll shed light on how choosing low-cost options and being mindful of fees can help maximize your returns. A U.S. Government Accountability Office report from 2021 found that 41% of 401(k) participants don't know they pay any fees in their plan. We'll help you become fee-savvy to protect your nest egg. For decades, writers and filmmakers have imagined worlds where characters can do things like watch a double sunset (on Tatooine, of course), or stand among the sand dunes of Arrakis, or gaze at the gas-giant planet Polyphemus from the moon Pandora. But even as works like Star Wars, Dune, and Avatar have enticed us with their fictional renditions of planets beyond our reach, astronomers have slowly begun to compile a set of scientific truths about the actual exoplanets. In this episode, Jacke talks to author Keith Cooper (Amazing Worlds of Science Fiction and Science Fact) about the realities beyond imaginary planets. PLUS Jacke takes a look at two AI-related pieces of news: the recovery of writing long thought to be lost on a scroll charred by Vesuvian ash, and a summer reading list that surprised everyone - including the authors who made the list for reasons they were not expecting. Matt Crawford speaks with author Christina Li about her debut adult novel, The Manor of Dreams. Vivian Yin is dead. The first Chinese actress to win an Oscar, the trailblazing ingénue rose to fame in the eighties, only to disappear from the spotlight at the height of her career to live out the rest of her life as a recluse. Now her remaining family members are gathered for the reading of her will, and her daughters expect to inherit their childhood home: Vivian's grand, sprawling, Southern California garden estate. But due to a last-minute change to the will, the house is passed on to another family instead—one that has suddenly returned after decades of estrangement. In hopes of staking their claim, both families move into the mansion. As Vivian's daughters race to piece together what happened in the last weeks of their mother's life, disturbing visions and bizarre behaviors start to take hold of everyone in the house, forcing them to realize they are being haunted by something far more sinister and vengeful than their regrets. After so many years of silence, will the families finally confront the painful truth behind the house's origins and the last, tragic summer they spent there—or will they cling to their secrets until it's too late? Told in dual timelines, spanning three generations, and brimming with romance, betrayal, ambition, and sacrifice, The Manor of Dreams is a thrilling family gothic that examines the true cost of the American Dream—and what happens when the roots we set down in this country turn to rot.

Daily Boost Podcast Show Notes Don't Let Bill-Paying Kill Your Dreams June 10, 2025 | Episode -5112 Host: Scott Smith Episode Description Summer's here, and while everyone's thinking about vacations and fun, Scott wants you to think about something more important: your focus. Your attention determines your destination, and most people don't realize others have already set their focus. In this episode, Scott shares a conversation he had with a young man who just finished school and was pursuing his “dream career.” But there was a problem - his focus was in the wrong place, and Scott could hear it immediately. Featured Story Scott met a young man at church who had just finished school and was working toward his dream career. The young man also got job certification to pay his bills while pursuing his passion. During their conversation, the young man said something that made Scott's ears perk up: “I'm hoping I can get a good job supporting my dream.” To Scott's trained ear, this wasn't hope - it was dream-erasing, defocused thinking that would lead the young man away from what he wanted. Important Points What you focus on is what you get - if you focus on paying bills instead of pursuing dreams, you'll stay focused on paying bills for 20, 30, or 40 years. Golden handcuffs are real - the certainty of earning income becomes your focus, and dreams disappear while you're busy doing stuff. The solution is separation - get a job separate from your dreams that pays the bills, then focus every available second on your dreams until you don't need that job anymore. Memorable Quotes “What you focus on is what you get. You've heard that a thousand times. Do you believe it?” “Most folks don't notice their dreams are gone for like 20, 30, 40 years because they're so busy doing stuff.” “When you focus on your dreams, you get so good at what you do. It's just a matter of time before you percolate to the top and start getting paid to do what you love to do.” Scott's Three-Step Approach Get a job that's separate from any dream you've ever had that makes the money you need to pay your bills. Focus every single second of time after work on your dreams and getting better at what you want to do. Define your money-making job by saying “I do this to make money so I can do that,” knowing you'll shift gears as soon as you're good enough at your dream pursuit. The game of golf is extremely fun based on the fact it can be both an individual sport, and also have team formats. There are a lot of formats which can make the game different, but possibly the best format, a 4-man scramble, is being ruined. Ruined by what? Cheating. That's the topic of this Fairways & Dreams podcast with host Jeff Hartman, along with the latest news and notes in the game of golf. This podcast is a part of the Golfer Gang Network of podcasts. In Part 2 of our conversation with Lynnsey Robinson, we go deeper into the woo (and the why) — decoding what our dreams are really trying to tell us, how to approach tarot as a tool for self-reflection (not fortune-telling), and how to actually use affirmations so they don't feel like empty words. We talk about what it means when you keep having the same dream over and over again, how tarot can help you get unstuck, and why slapping “I am confident” on your mirror isn't enough if your subconscious isn't on board. Amanda shares her winding path from marketing graduate with dreams of working for Coca-Cola to becoming a highly respected law enforcement analyst in Florida. With 18 years of experience, Amanda reflects on the surprising turns her career has taken from analyzing financial crimes and tracking sexual predators to solving homicides and providing vital aid during Hurricane Ian. Amanda recounts three career-defining cases, including identifying a murder victim later found in a freezer and tracing a killer using just a Snapchat handle and a faint clue from 2018. Along the way, she offers insights into the evolving role of analysts, the power of networking, and the value of continuous learning. Whether you're a veteran analyst or just entering the field, Amanda's story is an inspiring reminder of the impact a determined analyst can have.
FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageHave you ever wondered why all that positive visualization hasn't transformed your life? Despite your vivid daydreams of success, you find yourself still sitting on the couch, no closer to your goals? Motivation science has the answer, and it's not what you might expect. This eye-opening episode dives deep into Gabrielle Oettingen's revolutionary research on motivation as explored in her 2014 book "Rethinking Positive Thinking." We uncover the counterintuitive truth that simply dreaming about your desired future can actually make you less likely to achieve it. When we engage in pleasant fantasies about our goals, our brains experience a false sense of fulfillment that drains our motivation to tackle real-world challenges. As Oettingen explains, "By fooling our brains into thinking we're already successful, we lose motivation and energy to do what it actually takes to become successful."But don't despair! We explore Oettingen's powerful alternative technique called "mental contrasting" - a method that transforms wishful thinking into actionable energy. Rather than abandoning your dreams, mental contrasting teaches you to pair your positive vision with a clear-eyed assessment of the obstacles in your path. This balanced approach has been scientifically proven to significantly increase motivation across numerous domains, from weight loss to academic performance to business negotiations. Through mental contrasting, you can become both a dreamer AND a doer - someone who not only imagines a better future but takes concrete steps to create it.Ready to stop daydreaming and start achieving? Visit teammojoacademy.com where we've gathered everything discussed in this podcast along with additional resources to help you apply these concepts immediately. Let's put theory into action and get your mojo on!Key Points from the Episode:• Merely visualizing success puts us in a state of "bliss, calmness and lethargy" that saps our energy• Fantasizing tricks our brain into thinking we've already achieved our goals• "Dreamers are not often doers" - positive visualization without reality awareness doesn't work• Mental contrasting is the solution: visualize both dreams AND obstacles standing in your way• This technique energizes us by creating "the necessity to act"• Studies show mental contrasting has helped people quit smoking, lose weight, improve grades, and enhance relationships• The key is becoming both "dreamers AND doers" rather than just dreamersCheck out our show page at teammojoacademy.com for everything discussed in this podcast and other great resources to help you get your mojo on.Other resources: Want to leave a review? In this episode, Steve and I open up about what it really means to be on the same team as parents—especially in the moments where we don't fully agree, tempers are flaring, or it would be easier to throw each other under the bus because it's easier. We talk about:What “same team” actually means to us in real, practical termsHow we handle disagreements behind the scenes so we can show up united in front of the girlsWhy we believe alignment matters more than always being in agreementHow presenting a united front has strengthened our relationship and created more safety and stability at homeThis isn't about being the perfect parenting duo. It's about doing the inner work, respecting each other's perspectives, and choosing the long game—for our partnership and our family. If you've ever found yourself frustrated, disconnected, or unsure how to navigate parenting differences with your partner, this is a conversation we hope brings insight, honesty, and a reminder that you're not alone.Buy my book, Authentic - coming home to your true self - AUS, EUR, USACoach with me 1:1 - Book a 20-minute call nowThe Good Life - sign up nowFree Wheel of Life Assessment - take the test nowSunday Meds - live event by the beach, June 22ndWrite into us - let us know what you want to hearwww.katjohn.com.auSupport the show
God's dream is to be home with humanity. That dream involves our own flourishing - for us and for others around us. If we're learning to live within God's bigger dream and not chase our own idols, then shouldn't this dreaming thing be a bit easier? Well, our dreams don't just get sidetracked because of our waywardness and tendency to perform rather than waiting for God's directing and equipping presence. These good dreams, promises and longings from God, are also opposed. Sometimes, they are opposed by the one who is called the enemy and the accuser. Other times, God's promises are opposed by other people. Either way, we need perseverance to keep dreaming and to keep dwelling with God. Come Sunday to be encouraged to dream past and beyond opposition.- Series Description - What dreams do we have for our life? Are they God's dreams or our dreams? Both? Sometimes, we protect God from our own dreams, wondering if we gave into his ways and will if he would squelch our true desires. Other times, we give up on dreams understanding the call to discipleship to mean that dreams are for yesteryear. There is another way. Throughout the scriptures, God hints at what his true dream is and ways humans can partner with God with their own longings. This involves knowing God's heart, learning to wait, expecting opposition, and pairing our dreams with a call to obedience. Come bring your dreams, yourselves, and interested friends this Sunday.
