This episode features a deep dive into the evolving landscape of managed services, focusing on the insights of industry experts Howard M. Cohen and Abraham Garver. The discussion centers around the significant shift towards service-oriented models within the managed service provider (MSP) sector, highlighting the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) and the ecosystems that are driving growth. Cohen emphasizes the three main categories of services that are currently profitable for MSPs: managed services, project services, and the emerging field of AI-driven solutions.Cohen and Garver explore the challenges MSPs face in integrating AI into their offerings. While some MSPs are beginning to adopt AI technologies, many are still grappling with how to effectively implement these tools. Garver notes that the financial metrics of MSPs, such as EBITDA, remain largely unchanged despite the incremental benefits AI may provide. The conversation also touches on the potential commoditization of certain services, particularly in help desk operations, as AI technologies become more prevalent. The experts discuss the competitive landscape, particularly how larger, private equity-backed MSPs may have an advantage in leveraging AI due to their resources. Smaller MSPs may struggle to keep pace, leading to a potential widening of the gap between them and larger players. Cohen argues that AI could serve as a great equalizer for smaller MSPs if they can effectively automate processes and reduce reliance on human resources. Finally, the episode highlights the importance of peer groups and community support for MSPs looking to grow and adapt in this changing environment. Both Cohen and Garver agree that engaging with trusted peer networks can provide invaluable insights and strategies for navigating the complexities of the managed services market. The conversation concludes with a preview of an upcoming interview focused on practical applications of AI in enhancing productivity and streamlining workflows. The podcast features a discussion on the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), law, and ethics, with insights from attorney Brad Gross and AI governance expert Juliette Powell. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into the services provided by managed service providers (MSPs) and technology companies, the risks associated with compliance and unintended bias are growing. The conversation explores how businesses can navigate legal pitfalls while developing responsible and transparent AI strategies, emphasizing the importance of accountability and ethical considerations in AI deployment.Juliette Powell highlights the need for organizations to establish AI governance frameworks that are adaptable to evolving technologies. She questions the notion of what is considered "ethically sound" and emphasizes the importance of understanding the organizational culture and the people using AI tools. The discussion reveals that many employees do not utilize AI tools effectively, leading to gaps in implementation and understanding. This sets the stage for a deeper exploration of the responsibilities that organizations must take on as they integrate AI into their operations.Brad Gross addresses the legal implications of AI, particularly concerning privacy and intellectual property. He stresses that while MSPs can delegate tasks to AI, they cannot delegate responsibility. This means that organizations must maintain a human element in their AI strategies to mitigate risks. The conversation also touches on the current lack of comprehensive laws governing AI in the U.S., with a focus on the need for transparency and disclosure regarding data usage in AI systems. The episode concludes with a discussion on the importance of accountability within organizations. Both experts agree that having a designated individual or team responsible for AI governance is crucial for success. They emphasize that MSPs should manage client expectations by clarifying the shared responsibilities in AI compliance. This collaborative approach is essential for navigating the complexities of AI integration and ensuring that organizations can leverage technology effectively while adhering to legal and ethical standards. "We're making it easier for carriers and large enterprises to interconnect and manage their networks Trevor Francis efficiently," says Trevor Francis, CEO and Founder of 46 Labs. In this Technology Reseller News podcast, Trevor Francis discusses 46 Labs' role as the "carrier's carrier" and how the company is leading the charge in simplifying global connectivity. From major acquisitions to AI-driven efficiency and the migration away from copper, he provides insights into what's ahead for telecom in 2025. "We acquired two legacy wireline companies last year, positioning us to accelerate network modernization," says Francis. What is 46 Labs? Connectivity Orchestration – 46 Labs helps resellers and large enterprises optimize their voice networks and streamline interconnections. Carrier's Carrier – Acting as the "train station" of telecom, the company enables seamless infrastructure and network management. Expanding Through Acquisitions – 46 Labs acquired Hyper-Q Networks and Impact in 2024, strengthening its wholesale telecom capabilities. Regulatory & Market Shifts in 2025 New FCC Leadership & Policy Changes – A more proactive approach may lead to easier wireline network modernization. M&A Resurgence – With previous stagnation in telecom mergers, Francis predicts more consolidation and transformation in the coming year. Satellite Connectivity Evolution – While LEO satellites (e.g., Starlink) improve rural access, they won't disrupt terrestrial wireless networks. Copper Migration: The Death of Copper at the Core A Massive Industry Challenge – Legacy PSTN networks still rely on copper interconnects between carriers. Enterprise Migration vs. Carrier Migration – While businesses transition to VoIP, carriers must overhaul the underlying infrastructure. Regulatory & Technical Barriers – The shift requires compliance with state and federal rules, plus retraining a workforce where institutional knowledge is fading. "We're tackling one of the biggest challenges in telecom—migrating carriers away from copper while ensuring stability and compliance," says Francis. AI's Role in Telecom: Efficiency, Not Disruption AI will make carriers more efficient, but adoption will be slow due to regulatory concerns and potential service disruptions. Risk vs. Reward – AI-driven automation must be implemented cautiously to avoid major failures in carrier networks. Fifth Industrial Revolution – The telecom sector must balance innovation with reliability. "AI adoption in telecom will take time—it's too risky to disrupt carrier operations overnight," says Francis. Network-as-a-Service: The New Carrier Model Traditional Carrier Model is Fading – Carriers are moving away from fully owning infrastructure. Managed Services & "As-a-Service" Offerings – 46 Labs provides turnkey network solutions, allowing carriers to outsource complex network transitions. Security Considerations – With increased IP-based connectivity, security threats rise, requiring encryption and network segmentation strategies. What's Ahead for Large Enterprises? The move away from copper is a global trend, impacting large enterprises, airlines, and pharmaceutical companies. International Voice Connectivity – Enterprises must take a holistic approach to voice and telecom strategies. Regulatory & Compliance Needs – Navigating global carrier relationships requires expertise in regulations and connectivity management. "Enterprises need a comprehensive strategy for handling voice and connectivity across all divisions," says Francis. At ThreatLocker Zero Trust World 2025 in Orlando, Chase Cunningham, often referred to as “Dr. Zero Trust,” delivered a thought-provoking session titled The Grand Delusion. The event, filled with IT professionals, managed service providers (MSPs), and small to midsize business (SMB) leaders, provided the perfect backdrop for a candid discussion about the state of cybersecurity and the real-world application of Zero Trust strategies.Challenging the Status QuoCunningham emphasized the need for businesses to adopt realistic cybersecurity practices that align with their resources and needs. He pointed out the pitfalls of smaller organizations attempting to emulate enterprise-level security strategies without the necessary infrastructure. “Cyber shouldn't be any different” than outsourcing taxes or other specialized tasks, he explained, advocating for MSPs and external services as practical solutions.Zero Trust as a Strategy, Not Just a TermThe session underscored that Zero Trust is not merely a buzzword but a strategic approach to security. Cunningham stressed the importance of questioning the validity of industry claims and seeking concrete data to support cybersecurity initiatives. He encouraged attendees to avoid being “delusional” by blindly accepting security solutions without a critical evaluation of their impact and effectiveness.Actionable Steps for Small BusinessesCunningham shared practical advice for implementing Zero Trust principles within smaller organizations. He recommended focusing on foundational controls like identity and access management, micro-segmentation, and application allow and block lists. He noted that achieving security is a journey, requiring a structured, strategic approach and an acceptance that immediate results are unlikely. The Future of Zero TrustLooking ahead, Cunningham expressed optimism about the continued evolution of Zero Trust. He highlighted its growing global significance, with his upcoming engagements in Taiwan, Colombia, and Europe serving as evidence of its widespread adoption. Ultimately, he framed Zero Trust as not only a business imperative but a fundamental human right in today's digital world.Tune in to this episode to hear more insights from Chase Cunningham and explore what Zero Trust means for businesses of all sizes.Guest

New data points to the significant growth projected for the IT-managed services industry in 2025, with revenues expected to reach approximately $595 billion globally. The Asia-Pacific region is anticipated to lead this growth, driven by an increasing demand for cybersecurity services and a shift towards a security-first approach among managed service providers (MSPs). However, a recent Canalys survey indicates that many partners struggle to advance artificial intelligence (AI) projects beyond the proof-of-concept stage, highlighting the challenges posed by compliance and regulation, particularly with new laws like the Digital Operational Resilience Act in the EU.The episode also delves into the evolving landscape of PC technology, where small and medium-sized businesses reportedly spend 77% of their IT staff's time on PC maintenance and support. As AI technology advances, AI PCs are expected to account for a significant portion of all PC purchases in 2025. The need for performance optimization, AI software deployment, and on-device security is becoming increasingly critical, prompting IT providers to develop specialized support services to meet these demands. The rise of AI also necessitates user training and energy efficiency, as businesses look to maximize the potential of AI technology. In a discussion about major tech companies, host Dave Sobel highlights the backlash Microsoft faced after a 30% price increase for its Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription, which left many users dissatisfied and unaware of the changes. Despite the criticism, the price hike is projected to generate substantial additional revenue. Meanwhile, Apple is focusing on revamping Siri and enhancing its AI models, reflecting a commitment to improving its AI capabilities amid challenges with existing features. These developments underscore a broader issue within the IT services industry: the gap between AI hype and real-world delivery, emphasizing the importance of transparency and effective communication with customers. The episode concludes with insights into the evolving role of Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs), who are increasingly taking on broader business responsibilities beyond traditional cybersecurity duties. Despite this expansion, only a small percentage of CISOs reported salary increases linked to their additional responsibilities. The growing influence of CISOs in boardrooms is noted, with many now reporting directly to CEOs and participating in board meetings. However, a disconnect remains between the priorities of CISOs and board members, particularly regarding compliance, which could pose challenges in navigating the complex regulatory landscape. This evolving dynamic presents both opportunities and challenges for IT providers and MSPs as they seek to align with CISOs and address gaps in security and compliance. Matt shares his excitement about current trends in software development and explains how these advancements are influencing Red Hawk's approach to building applications. Matt explains how Red Hawk leverages AI tools like code copilots to streamline the development process, while emphasizing the importance of maintaining a "human in the loop" approach. He also addresses the concerns surrounding AI replacing jobs, asserting that AI should enhance, not diminish, the role of development teams. However, he stresses that companies should only invest in AI if they can clearly articulate its value to their business. With a significant increase in global demand for cloud services and data security, the managed services market is expected to reach an estimated $393.02 billion by 2025. Factors contributing to this growth include the need for specialized providers to manage complex IT infrastructures and the rising trend of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), which necessitates enhanced data security measures. North America leads the market, but Europe and Asia-Pacific are also experiencing substantial growth driven by cloud adoption and digital transformation. The episode highlights a recent report indicating a slowdown in managed services revenue growth, returning to pre-COVID levels, despite strong profitability for managed service providers (MSPs). The average adjusted EBITDA for MSPs stands at 13.2%, with private equity-backed MSPs reporting even higher figures. In contrast, value-added resellers (VARs) have seen significant revenue growth, particularly in Europe, which experienced a 6.9% increase in managed services revenue. The discussion emphasizes the need for MSPs to adapt to changing client spending patterns as the market normalizes.Host Dave Sobel also covers the competitive landscape, noting several key announcements from major players in the industry. ConnectWise has launched a Professional Services Automation (PSA) initiative aimed at enhancing MSP success through streamlined processes and improved efficiency. Meanwhile, NineMinds has introduced Alga PSA, a free open-source platform designed to compete with established PSA providers, and SuperOps has unveiled Monika, an AI-powered companion for MSPs that offers personalized insights and solutions. These developments signal a shift in the market as new entrants challenge traditional providers. The episode concludes with a focus on the growing importance of cybersecurity and the need for human expertise in addressing complex threats. As the demand for AI services continues to exceed supply, the global cloud market has reached an impressive $84 billion, with major players like AWS, Microsoft, and Google Cloud holding a significant share. In this episode of The Business of Tech, host Dave Sobel engages in a thought-provoking discussion with Eitan Koter, CEO of Vimmi, about the evolving landscape of e-commerce and the rise of shoppable video. Koder emphasizes the necessity for managed services providers and IT services companies to adapt to the changing market by integrating e-commerce solutions that allow customers to purchase directly online. He highlights the growing trend of social commerce, driven by platforms like TikTok, which is reshaping how consumers interact with brands and make purchasing decisions.Koter explains that shoppable videos are designed to facilitate impulse purchases by embedding buy buttons directly within video content. This innovative approach not only enhances the shopping experience but also addresses the challenges businesses face in acquiring new customers amid rising advertising costs. By leveraging social media platforms where consumers spend significant time, brands can effectively showcase their products and drive conversions through engaging video content. The conversation also delves into the application of shoppable videos in the B2B sector. Koter notes that while B2B transactions often involve longer sales cycles, video can play a crucial role in guiding potential buyers through the decision-making process. He points out that many B2B purchases are now happening online, and integrating video content with interactive elements can streamline the buying experience, making it easier for decision-makers to engage with products and services. As the episode concludes, Koter reflects on the generational shifts in purchasing behavior, emphasizing that the current landscape is influenced more by competition and technological advancements than by age demographics. He encourages businesses to embrace authenticity and emotional connections in their marketing strategies, suggesting that a deeper understanding of customer sentiments can lead to more effective engagement. This episode offers valuable insights for businesses looking to navigate the future of e-commerce and enhance their sales strategies through innovative video content.
