It might be tempting to buy dividend stocks with the highest yields, but not all dividend payers are safe. Those big payouts could be signaling that a company's fundamentals are cracking. Looming financial risks could wreak havoc on income-focused investors' portfolios. But there are ways to spot dividend traps. Morningstar Indexes strategist and columnist Dan Lefkovitz explains how to avoid the risks. Both healthcare and consumer defensive sectors are lagging the broader stock market this year, but for different reasons.Dan Kemp, chief research and investment officer at Morningstar Investment Management Europe, explored what's behind it in this week's Markets Brief column. He says consumer defensive stocks are falling from high valuations, while healthcare stocks are facing significant headwinds like politics and earnings growth. He reminds investors that's why it's important to understand not only what you own in your portfolio, but why you own it as well. On this episode:What is a dividend trap, and under what conditions do they tend to develop? You and your team published research on dividend traps just before Dow Chemical DOW cut its dividend in half over the summer. How does your research explain what happened with Dow? Other well-known brands have also slashed their dividend payouts since 2020. The list includes Shell, Walgreens, and Intel. What warning signs were these companies flashing before their cuts? You have written about how income-focused investors can avoid dividend traps. Let's start with step number one on how to spot them. What is the payout ratio, and what does it tell us about a company's health? The second step focuses on a company's durable competitive advantage or economic moat. Can you describe what that reveals?Your team weeds out dividend payers using a third step that relies on Distance to Default. How does that work, and what did you all find out? How can investors protect their dividend income from risks? Would portfolio diversification help? What's the key takeaway to spot dividend traps? We discussed on last week's Investing Insights that you would focus on the market moves following the Fed's quarter-point cut. How have the US dollar and bond prices reacted?  In this week's Markets Brief column, you zoomed in on the lagging performance of healthcare and consumer defensive stocks. What's important for investors to know?  New data on inflation from the Fed's preferred tracker is set to come out Friday, September 26th. Inflation is hovering above the Fed's 2% target. Why do some people command instant respect without saying a word? In this episode, AJ and Johnny reveal the four high value signals that separate quiet authority from desperate posturing. Respect isn't about aggression, volume, or proving you belong—it's about presence. With research from Harvard and Frame Strength studies, they unpack how calmness, cooperation, congruent body language, and responsibility change the way people see you in any room. You'll learn why calm authority beats dominance, why spotlighting others actually raises your own status, and how subtle shifts in posture and eye contact project confidence before you speak. In this episode, ARK's Brett Winton, Charles Roberts and Frank Downing sit down with Stephen Balaban, CEO and co-founder of Lambda Labs — a company building AI-specific cloud infrastructure. The conversation explores Lambda's role in the AI value chain, the evolving economics of data centers, and why traditional hyperscalers might be too slow to meet the moment.Stephen explains why he believes we're transitioning from deterministic, rule-based software to what he calls “neural software” — stochastic, neural network-driven systems that will eventually replace nearly all traditional software. He shares Lambda's mission to enable this transformation by rapidly deploying GPU infrastructure and supporting the AI research and application build-out happening today. The discussion spans infrastructure strategy, regulatory bottlenecks, AI safety, energy constraints, and long-term visions of neural operating systems. Stephen offers a bold perspective on the hardware demands and philosophical shifts required to usher in a world where software is generated, not written.Key Points From This Episode:00:01:21 How Lambda positions itself as a “neo-cloud” provider competing with AWS, Azure, and GCP for AI workloads.00:02:46 Why ARK estimates $1.5 trillion in annual AI-related data center investment by 2030 and what it could mean for Lambda.00:05:26 Why hyperscalers may be too slow to meet the unique demands of AI training compared to specialized players.00:06:29 How AI infrastructure requires new rack designs, higher power density, and different utilization patterns.00:09:20 Why AI may disrupt the entire computing stack—from Nvidia overtaking Intel to reshaping platform and cloud services.00:14:50 Stephen explains Lambda's “secret mission” to replace all traditional software with neural networks.00:16:36 Why companies trust Lambda to deploy GPU infrastructure faster and more reliably than incumbents.00:20:27 How the concept of a “neural operating system” reframes software as stochastic rather than deterministic.00:23:04 How hallucinations in neural systems could be managed with checks and balances similar to financial approvals.00:25:04 Why Stephen sees AI safety and alignment as the cybersecurity of the future.00:39:00 How real-time AI tasks may run locally at the edge, while deeper reasoning gets pushed to the cloud.00:44:11 Why running modern large language models still resembles the supercomputer era rather than the PC era.00:46:06 How Stephen views the long-term convergence of AI with quantum computing and brain–computer interfaces.00:50:20 Why scaling AI requires the “heroic effort” of Nvidia, TSMC, OpenAI, energy providers, and Lambda together.00:53:43 Back-of-the-envelope math on CapEx per megawatt—from power plants and data centers to GPUs.00:57:11 Why power infrastructure and deregulation could become the biggest stumbling blocks for AI growth.01:02:02 How software creation is shifting from a labor-driven process to a capital-intensive one.01:06:06 Why Stephen and Brett describe data centers as “AI factories” producing custom neural software.

NVDA $$ - Nvidia is investing in OpenAI. On September 22, 2025, Nvidia announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI, which includes an investment of up to $100 billion - The agreement will help deploy at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems, which will include millions of its GPUs. The first phase is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2026, using Nvidia's Vera Rubin platform. Autism Link - Shares of Kenvue (KVUE) are trading lower largely due to reports from the White House and HHS suggesting a forthcoming warning linking prenatal use of acetaminophen (Tylenol's active ingredient) to autism risk. - Investors are concerned that such a warning could lead to regulatory action, changes in labeling requirements, litigation risk, or reduced demand for one of KVUE's key products. It's estimated that Tylenol accounts for approximately 7-9% of KVUE's total revenue. - The company has strongly denied any scientific basis for the link, but the uncertainty itself is hurting sentiment. - Finally, this also comes on top of recent weak financial performance: KVUE posted a Q2 revenue decline of 4% and cut its full-year guidance on August 7. - - Lawsuits to follow... Former EOS implementer, author, and manufacturing CEO Michael Erath joins me to explore what happens when business frameworks turn from liberators into cages—and how elite organizations escape the trap.Rigid systems like EOS can bring chaos under control, but stop short of greatness. Michael and I dig into why prescriptive “20 tools forever” models break down at scale, how to design for outcomes instead of checklists, and why A-player imposters cost more than missed A-players. We unpack the dangers of short-term cost cutting (Intel, GE), the overlooked genius of Eli Goldratt's Theory of Constraints, and why profit-per-X clarity beats generic “best practices.”The theme running through it: systems should serve people and outcomes, not the other way around. Elite organizations don't settle for “not that bad”—they build adaptive frameworks, measure the right constraint, and pursue excellence with discipline.TL;DR* Systems ≠ salvation: EOS and similar tools help kill chaos but cap out at mediocrity.* Mechanical vs. organic: Treat processes like machines when possible, but don't ignore the living, adaptive side of organizations. The A-player trap: The costliest errors are (1) losing true A-players, and (2) mistaking B-players for A-players.* Constraint clarity: TOC says find the one constraint—fixing it yields immediate profit, unlike slow checklist efficiency.* Profit per X: Identify the metric tied to your real constraint (throughput, calendar days, etc.) and align decisions around it.* Outcomes over inputs: Define every role by its most critical outcome, not by tasks or titles.Memorable lines* “Most systems are built for chaos-to-decent. Elite requires more.”* “Don't pay A-player salaries for B-player conformity.”* “World-class accounts payable never made anyone strategic.”* “Profit per X isn't a spreadsheet trick—it's a spotlight on your real constraint.”GuestMichael Erath — Former manufacturing CEO, EOS implementer turned founder of his own operating framework, and author of Five Obsessions of Elite Organizations.https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelerath1/http://www.fiveobsessions.comWhy This MattersBusinesses chasing short-term fixes or worshipping rigid frameworks stay stuck at “good enough.” The path to excellence is clarity: knowing your real constraint, aligning outcomes at every level, and designing systems that bend with your people instead of breaking them. If you want organizations that outlast hype cycles and downturns, trade dogma for discipline.Call to ActionIf this conversation lit something up for you, don't just let it fade. NVIDIA has made a significant move by investing $5 billion in Intel, acquiring approximately 4% ownership of the company. This partnership aims to co-develop custom data center and personal computer products, integrating NVIDIA's advanced AI and accelerated computing capabilities with Intel's leading CPU technologies. The collaboration is expected to create custom x86 chips that will be manufactured by Intel to NVIDIA's specifications, potentially generating an annual opportunity worth between $25 and $50 billion once the products are launched. Despite this partnership, Intel will continue to develop its own ARC graphic processing units, although the messaging around this dual focus may create confusion. The Federal Reserve has cut interest rates by a quarter point, a decision framed as a risk management measure amid a cooling labor market. While job gains have slowed and inflation remains high, the Fed's cautious approach indicates limited support for deeper cuts. In the tech sector, the U.S. personal computer industry is facing challenges, with shipments declining due to inventory issues and consumer reluctance to upgrade their devices, even with the impending end of support for Windows 10. This stagnation in consumer sales reflects broader economic uncertainties as buyers prioritize essential expenses.Meanwhile, global spending on artificial intelligence is projected to reach nearly $1.5 trillion this year, driven by a boom in cloud data center construction and rising enterprise investments in AI technologies. Despite the enthusiasm surrounding AI, a recent McKinsey report reveals that 80% of companies utilizing generative AI have not seen tangible impacts on their earnings, highlighting a disconnect between the hype and real-world performance. As stock prices rise, recession signals are emerging, suggesting a need for caution in an increasingly concentrated market.Managed service providers (MSPs) are strategically positioned within a $608 billion industry, despite a decline in optimism regarding significant revenue growth. The demand for managed IT services continues to rise, with many providers diversifying their revenue streams by offering consulting and design services. Additionally, IT outages are costing businesses an estimated $76 million annually, emphasizing the importance of uptime over tools. As the landscape evolves, providers must focus on delivering outcomes rather than competing solely on software, ensuring that customers receive the value they need to maintain business continuity. Three things to know today00:00 Fed Rate Cut, PC Sales Slump, and $1.5T AI Hype: Why IT Providers Must Focus on Security and Outcomes04:36 $76M Downtime Losses, Cooling MSP Optimism, 7x Security Multipliers, and Mainframe ROI—All Point to Services as the Real Value08:16 Nvidia Buys 4% of Intel in $5B Deal, Betting on Custom AI Chips for Servers and PCs This is the Business of Tech.    Supported by:  https://scalepad.com/dave/Webinar:   https://bit.ly/msprmail All our Sponsors: https://businessof.tech/sponsors/ Do you want the show on your podcast app or the written versions of the stories?
