EYE on NPI - ISSI's Serial and Quad PSRAM chips

Adafruit Industries

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 18, 2024 8:44

Psst...this week's EYE ON NPI is no secret, and despite having the word "Pseudo" in the name, it's the Real Deal: This week it's ISSI's Serial and Quad PSRAM chips (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/i/issi/serial-ram-and-quad-ram-solutions), an excellent addition to your next microcontroller board to quickly boost your RAM stack to megabyte proportions! Microcontrollers have come a long way since 8-bit chips like the ATmega328 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/123). What used to be a luxurious 32 KB of flash memory and 2 KB of SRAM is now nowhere-near-enough storage for handling the big computation requirements we're trying to squeeze into embedded products. It used to be enough to handle some buttons, blink a few LEDs, maybe at best read a sensor and control a motor. Now we need internet connectivity, full graphics support, and machine learning algorithms running on large sensor data sets! As we've seen, microcontrollers have evolved from 8-bit AVR to Cortex M0 to Cortex M4 and even M7 - or if you're a fan of Espressif chips, Tensilica/RISC-V 240 MHz processors. But what you are paying for in a microcontroller is often related to the density and size of the die, and on many processors, the RAM and FLASH can start to take up a dominant amount of die real-estate. SRAM and Flash may also require larger nm 'processes' that are harder to book. As a result, we're seeing chips like the RP2040 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/raspberry-pi/SC0914-13/14306010) that have on-chip SRAM but no longer have on-chip Flash memory. Instead, you're expected to pick up a QSPI flash chip and wire it up to the 6-pin interface. By clever usage of on-chip instruction cache, you can get close to on-board FLASH speeds but with the flexibility and size of external memory: it's hard to find a chip with more than 1 MB of internal FLASH but you can easily get 16 MB of external memory like the ISSI IS25WP128 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/issi-integrated-silicon-solution-inc/IS25WP128-JBLE/5431600) for only a couple bucks! OK now you've got plenty of space for your code, but what about RAM? That's where you'll be buffering graphics, storing data to process, or for IoT products, storing large packets of data that may need to be encrypted before sending/receiving. SRAM is also big and kinda expensive, so it's no surprise that many advanced processors these days also support external RAM chips. Now, most folks aware that microprocessors (as opposed to microcontrollers) have required external RAM for quite a long time - but often those used large DRAM chips with 8, 16 or 32-bit parallel interfaces like the IS42 series (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/issi-integrated-silicon-solution-inc/IS42S16400J-7TL/2708623). These of course are not going to work when you only have 32-ish GPIO available. That's where 8-pin PSRAM chips come in - and we're starting to see lots of 'low pin count' microcontrollers support these. For example the iMX RT1062 (https://www.digikey.com/short/0fhbdwv0) used in the Teensy 4.1 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4622) supports PSRAM - check the SOIC-8 footprint on the bottom. Likewise the ESP32 series has wide support for PSRAM, their modules come with 8-SOIC 2MB chips very often. The extra PSRAM comes in handy when doing large IoT projects where you have to buffer an entire image, or JSON structure. Especially over TLS connections that require a lot of RAM to process! Note that while you could use the ISSI PSRAM chips with any processor, thanks to the generic SPI or QSPI interface, you really do want a chip to have 'native' PSRAM support so that the compiler and core will automatically map the PSRAM out so it is accessed transparently to your code. You'll likely need to enable PSRAM support in your toolchain and of course wire it up to the supported QSPI interface pins. Also, sometimes you need to be careful about where some memory goes, like volatile or interrupt-accessed addresses. Sometimes you also have to tell the compiler what ID code or command-set to use, since things like enabling the QEN bit can vary from chip to chip. With a universal pinout and speedy 100MHz clock rate, PSRAM is a fast and easy way to make your micro roomier. If you're not sure which to pick, maybe start with the IS66WVS2M8BLL (https://www.digikey.com/short/29b1dzqf) a 2 MByte / 16 MBit 3.3V-logic SOIC-8 PSRAM chip. If you're ready to add encyclopedic memory in your next design, you are in luck, because the ISSI Serial and Quad PSRAM chips (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/i/issi/serial-ram-and-quad-ram-solutions) are in stock right now for immediate shipment! Order today and you'll get your chips in hand by tomorrow afternoon.

Think hard drives have hit their storage limits, and should be replaced by solid-state units? You could be wrong.  Hard drives have been holding our data for nearly 70 years since IBM created the 350, which stored something like 4 Mbyte on dozens of spinning disks in a unit the size of a washing machine. Today's devices are orders of magnitude better on every axis including price, capacity, size, and performance. But solid-state providers say it's time they moved over to make way for modern storage. Hard drives have been in a slump, but a new technique promises to double their capacity.  Seagate is the first to bring heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) to the market, so we invited chief commercial officer B S Teh to tell us why it is such a big deal, why it's taken so long - and how it could change what you do in your data center.

Show #808   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 13th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new Premium Partner of the podcast. This company is paying the bills, the website, the audio hosting for you. Welcome to Jim and the team at NATIONALCARCHARGING.com -  one of the nation's leading providers of EV charging equipment, along with consulting and station management services, charging solutions for housing, offices, commercial, residential. From wall boxes all the way up to the largest DC fast charging stations. They'll work with you on strategy and planning, hardware, installation and how those stations are managed. And also ALOHA CHARGE - bringing only the best electric car charging options to Hawaii and delivering them with top notch service.  They partner with top manufacturers — like ChargePoint, EVBox, Efacec and more.   And yes, this is show 808 and the dialing code for Hawaii is...808   https://www.nationalcarcharging.com/   https://www.alohacharge.com/   NEXT-GEN BMW PHEVS WILL HAVE CLAIMED 100 KM / 62 MILES OF ELECTRIC RANGE "BMW’s current crop of plug-in hybrids manage around 50 km (31 miles) of pure-electric driving on a single charge of their battery pack. If you really drive them gingerly, with a feather for a right foot, you can eek out up to 65 km (40 miles), but the lengths you have to go to in order to achieve that don’t make for practical daily driving." says InsideEVs: "But this could soon double, according to a recent report, so we could start to see them reach 100 km (62 miles) in the not too distant future. BMW Blog quotes BMW management board member Pieter Nota as saying: We are of course continuing to develop the drive system and will offer up to 100 kilometres of electric range in the future, depending on the segment. By the end of this year, we will already have a total of 12 basic plug-in hybrid models available, including the new MINI Countryman and the BMW X2. BMW’s smaller plug-in hybrids have a 12 kWh battery pack whose usable capacity is 10.4 kWh. The brand’s larger plug-in models, like the recently launched X5 45e, have a much bigger 24 kWh pack (with 21.6 kWh usable capacity); this model has a claimed electric range of up to 87 km (54 miles)."   https://insideevs.com/news/428406/next-gen-bmw-phev-100km-62miles-range/   2021 BMW X5 PLUG-IN HYBRID SUV: MORE POWER, MORE THAN DOUBLE THE ELECTRIC RANGE "The 2021 BMW X5 xDrive 45e is the second generation of the German automaker's mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV. Unveiled Wednesday for the U.S., it gets more than double the electric range of its predecessor, but also boasts more power." according to Green Car Reports: "Estimated EPA range will increase to 30 miles, up from 14 miles for the previous-generation X5 plug-in hybrid. That's due in large part to a bigger, 24-kilowatt-hour, battery pack. That's huge for a plug-in hybrid (the previous-generation model had a 12-kWh pack), and the same size as the battery pack in the original Nissan Leaf. Running on both gasoline and electric power, the X5 will do 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds, which is 1.2 seconds quicker than before, according to BMW. In electric mode, top speed is electronically limited to 84 mph—up from 70 mph before. In hybrid mode, the X5 is electronically limited to 130 mph, or 146 mph with optional performance tires."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1128450_2021-bmw-x5-plug-in-hybrid-suv-more-power-more-than-double-the-electric-range   COME 2022, NEW-CAR LAUNCHES WILL NEARLY DOUBLE, HALF OF THEM EVS OR HYBRIDS "In its annual "Car Wars" report, Bank of America Merrill Lynch predicts a wave of new-car launches coming in 2022 at nearly double the rate of the past two decades, with a stepped-up pace continuing in 2023 and 2024. And nearly half of those new-product introductions will be EVs or hybrids." writes Autoblog: "EVs and hybrids are a big driver of that total and are expected to comprise 49 percent of the total new-model intros over the next four years (EVs being 26 percent and hybrids 23 percent). The biggest increase by segment is — you guessed it — crossovers, which account for nearly half the total (49 percent). Light trucks at 28 percent are the next-biggest segment. The three passenger-car segments — luxury/sport, mid/large, and small — each comprise less than 10 percent of the total."   On the list of EV makers on the Bank of America analysis: Honda, Ford, Nissan, GM, Toyota and FCA.   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/06/13/new-car-launches-2022-jump-predicted/   TESLA UPGRADES US-MADE MODEL 3 WITH WIRELESS CHARGER AND USB-C PORTS "Tesla has upgraded Model 3 vehicles built at Fremont Factory in the US with features first introduced in Model Y and Chinese-made Model 3 vehicles, like a wireless phone charger and USB-C ports." according to electrek: "Tesla started Model Y deliveries in March and when the automaker delivered the first few units, we were surprised to learn that the new electric SUV came standard with a Qi wireless phone charger. In Model 3, it is only sold as an aftermarket item and doesn’t come standard with the electric car. Model Y also comes with USB-C ports unlike Model 3. Last month, Tesla added those features to Model 3 vehicles built in China. Now we learn that Tesla has indeed updated Model 3 vehicles made in the US with the Qi wireless phone charger and USB-C ports."   https://electrek.co/2020/06/13/tesla-upgrades-us-made-model-3-wireless-charger-usb-c-ports/   TESLA HAS TOP RANGE IN WORLD’S LONGEST EV RANGE TEST "Norwegian road assistance company NAF has completed the world’s longest EV range test. The company tested 29 of Norway’s most popular EVs. They tested the actual range in the summer, what happens when EVs go into power-saving mode, and how they charge in heat degrees." says Clean Technica: "During testing, they ran the cars until they were completely out of power in order to measure the actual range and consumption on typical Norwegian roads. The test was taken by ordinary drivers in regular traffic on a route that consists of city and highway driving with speeds ranging between 60 km an hour to 110 km an hour. This test is a followup to the winter version. Each of the vehicles was tested on the same day and took the same route. The drivers were instructed to drive normally, but defensively, and were encouraged to use regeneration actively in both city driving and downhill."   Tesla Model S: specified range — 610 km actual range — 645 km   Tesla Model 3: specified range — 560 km actual range — 612 km   Hyundai KONA electric: specified range — 480 km actual range — 568.4 km   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/06/12/tesla-has-top-range-in-worlds-longest-ev-range-test/   THESE 29 EVS ALL EXCEEDED THEIR ADVERTISED RANGES — WHICH IS PRETTY AWESOME "According to a road test carried out by Norwegian motoring magazine, Motor.no, and the Norwegian Automobile Federation (NAF), 29 EVs from leading manufacturers all exceeded their WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure) quoted ranges." writes The NExt Web: "The Nissan e-NV 200, which is actually an all-electric commercial vehicle, came out on top by exceeding its manufacturer quoted range by 39%. If you run a business and want an electric fleet, don’t ignore the e-NV 200! For regular passenger cars: the Opel Ampera-e exceeded its quoted range by 21%, the Renault Zoé went 19% further than expected, and the Hyundai Kona traveled 18% further than its WLTP range would suggest. Take a look for yourself at the best and worst performers"   https://thenextweb.com/shift/2020/06/11/leading-evs-exceed-manufacturer-expected-ranges-nissan-env200-wltp-range/     EV SALES PREDICTED TO SURGE AS SHOWROOMS REOPEN "Google Trends data show that, since the PM's launch of the COVID-19 recovery strategy (11 May), there has been a significant boom in demand across the automotive industry - so much so that the demand is now parallel with the numbers pre-lockdown, this surge in demand is especially evident in the electric vehicle industry." reports Electric Vehicles ResearchWhile search volume for 'electric car' hasn't yet returned to its pre-COVID levels, there's every indication that it will do soon. Specifically, the Tesla Model S and Model X have seen strong recoveries, matching and even exceeding interest this time last year. Demand for the compact BMW i3 has recently returned to its pre-COVID levels, while the higher-end Audi e-Tron has already exceeded this. This is a strong recovery considering the demand fell by 70.1% and 63.5% respectively from the 8th of March to the 22nd of March. The Road to Recovery Dashboard for Electric Vehicles will continue to be updated on a weekly basis to track the progress of the industry-wide recovery from COVID-19."   https://www.electricvehiclesresearch.com/articles/20909/ev-sales-predicted-to-surge-as-showrooms-reopen   RENAULT SEES GROWING THREAT FROM IMPORTS OF CHINESE EVS "A flood of Chinese electric cars coming ashore in Norway -- one of the biggest markets for battery-powered vehicles in Europe -- is a sign of the “ferocious competition” awaiting the region’s automakers." says Automotive NEws Europe: "Tighter emissions rules across the European Union have prodded automakers to lean into the transition to electric powertrains or face big fines this year. To further spur electric vehicle sales, the governments of France and Germany have included extra incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles in economic stimulus packages. The arrival of Chinese brands in Europe is a relatively recent phenomenon, and they are converging on the Nordic market at a tricky time for European automakers. British brand MG Motor, owned by Chinese giant SAIC Motor, has sold 600 of its ZS EVs in Norway, while a number of other companies are preparing their entry this year, according to the Norwegian Automobile Federation. These include BYD (with the Tang), the Chinese electric-vehicle maker backed by Warren Buffett, and Polestar, the venture between Volvo Cars and Zhejiang Geely Holding. Alibaba-backed Xpeng Motors also is planning to start sales in the country, as is Shanghai-based automaker Aiways (U5). Another startup, Byton, has promised a 2021 launch for its M-Byte crossover in select European markets, and BAIC Chairman Xu Heyi said last year he wanted to launch the Arcfox electric brand in Europe, without giving a timeframe."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/renault-sees-growing-threat-imports-chinese-evs   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/how-chinese-brands-are-using-evs-gain-foothold-europe     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   How far does a plug-in hybrid need to drive on EV power only?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 231 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #756   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 22nd April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Welcome to two Patreon supporters! Well a half welcome…MARTY YOUNG is now an EXECUTIVE PRODUCER of this podcast. And welcome to SSHADE as a new PRODUCER.   VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 PRODUCTION COMING BACK ONLINE TOMORROW "After over a month break (since March 20), Volkswagen ID.3 production in Zwickau, Germany will restart tomorrow (April 23) as the German manufacturer gradually adapts to the new reality." says InsideEVs: "The company was making "over 100" ID.3 per day before the coronavirus outbreak and we assume that thousands were already produced. The latest news is clear about the planned market launch this Summer - no change here. Frankly, there would be no point to delay anything as there are customers who placed orders and many of the 30,000 1ST cars were already produced. The only missing piece of the puzzle for Volkswagen is probably the software for the ID.3, but as the company multiple times reiterated the Summer launch date, we assume they are sure it will be ready by then."   They will start with 30-50 cars a day.   VW says: "Vehicles built will be equipped with whatever version of the software suite is current at the corresponding time of their production and prior to their delivery to customers in summer will receive the latest version. Subsequent to the market launch the digital functions will then continue to be updated in regular increments in the following months"   Jurgen Stackmann, Member of the Board of Management Volkswagen Brand for Sales, Marketing & After Sales put a video out on Twitter [audio]   https://insideevs.com/news/412880/vw-id3-production-back-online-tomorrow/   CHINESE EV START-UP BYTON FURLOUGHS STAFF "Electric vehicle start-up Byton has put hundreds of its team in the US on furlough, following lay-offs in China last year and planned pay cuts, as disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic threaten to derail the commercial release of its first car." says South China MOrning Post: "Byton initiated the series of cost-reduction measures this week amid efforts to put on track its main operations in Nanjing, capital of eastern coastal Jiangsu province, where production of the M-Byte electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) is based. More than 200 workers are affected by the temporary work stoppage at Byton’s North American headquarters in Santa Clara, California – a research and development base focused on software design, with about 450 staff. The M-Byte was expected to initially release in mainland China, the world’s biggest car market, later this year. That would be followed by the car’s commercial launch in the US and Europe by the second half of 2021."   https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3081262/chinese-ev-start-byton-furloughs-staff-cuts-pay-pandemic-casts-doubt   2020 PORSCHE TAYCAN 4S FIRST DRIVE - FORGET 203 MILES. AUTOBLOG EASILY GOT 300 From Dan at Autoblog who has his regular test route: "The 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S covered 213.5 miles this time, and it finished the day with 87 miles left over. Those figures add up to an astounding projected range of 300.5 miles — a full 48% and a whopping 97.5 miles better than its rating. This doesn’t just back up my prior result, it underlines it and makes it bold. The Taycan, be it the Turbo or now 4S, can grossly exceed its EPA ratings while driving in a normal manner." Autoblog writes: "This result in the Taycan 4S is possible because all early-build cars are being made with the larger 93.4-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery option that is the standard offering on Turbo models. These early 4S cars also come with a glass roof and an intelligent home charge cord, bringing the starting price up to $114,340 with destination included. The true base 4S and its 79.2-kWh battery won’t be built for some time, so we won’t know its official range (172-175, I’m guessing) until later. But we do know it’ll have a normal steel roof and will start at $105,150."   The charge port flat is a good old push/release door like most cars or even fossil cars. No fancy swipe with your finger.   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/04/22/2020-porsche-taycan-4s-first-drive/   TESLA DROPS A BUNCH OF NEW AUTOPILOT DATA, 3 BILLION MILES AND MORE "Tesla’s head of AI, Andrej Karpathy, released a bunch of new data about Autopilot and its features in a new presentation." reports electrek: "In November 2018, after 4 years of Autopilot, Tesla owners reached the first billion miles driven with Autopilot activated. Now less than two years later, Tesla’s fleet has now added 2 billion more miles for a total of 3 billion miles on Autopilot. The new information was released by Andrej Karpathy, Tesla’s head of AI and computer vision, in a new presentation at the Scaled Machine Learning Conference. It was held at the end of February, but a video of the presentation was just released. Out of the 3 billion miles on Autopilot, 1 billion were driven using Navigate on Autopilot, which is able to pass slower cars and take off-ramp exits by changing lanes."   https://electrek.co/2020/04/22/tesla-autopilot-data-3-billion-miles/   RANGE ROVER EVOQUE AND LAND ROVER DISCOVERY SPORT PLUG-IN HYBRIDS REVEALED "Land Rover has revealed a new plug-in hybrid powertrain that will be found in both the Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport. Both of these models have been completely redesigned in the last 24 months, but had so far only been available with a range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel Ingenium engines." writes evo.co.uk: "The new powertrain is made up from a new 197bhp turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 108bhp electric motor that’s mounted on the rear axle.  the new plug-in the most powerful version of both on sale. It’s also the fastest of each, reaching 62mph in 6.4sec (0.2sec faster than the Evoque P300). Unlike Land Rover’s traditional mechanically linked all-wheel-drive system found in most variants, power in these P300e models is sent from each of the power units to their relevant axles only, with no mechanical connection between the axles."   15kWh battery, 41 miles on electric, 84 mph.   https://www.evo.co.uk/land-rover/202497/range-rover-evoque-and-land-rover-discovery-sport-plug-in-hybrids-revealed   ELECTRIC AWARDS ISSUE OF TOP GER MAG " in this month’s issue of TG magazine we’re celebrating the very best electrified cars the world has to offer. Take the Koenigsegg Gemera, with its 600bhp three-cylinder, twin-turbo engine supported by three electric motors that produce a further 1,100bhp – now that’s our kind of hybrid. This month we’ve not only picked out the ten best electric cars in the world, but we’ve also rated every single EV on sale in the UK today."   Kona Electric has been acknowledged as the Best Small Family Car in the inaugural TopGear Electric Awards, after it showcased it’s strengths on a 1000 mile road trip across 9 European countries. The New Renault ZOE has been awarded the Best Supermini Award.   MERCEDES-BENZ CEASES PRODUCTION OF HYDROGEN GLC F-CELL FCV "Mercedes-Benz has reportedly pulled the plug on the hydrogen fuel cell version of its GLC, called the GLC F-Cell. Back in 2017, the manufacturer announced the FCV’s arrival with great aplomb, first vehicles were handed over to certain customers in October 2019 and it officially became available for order in the spring of 2019." says InsideEVs: "Some examples were sold to Germany’s National Organization Hydrogen (NOW) and H2 Mobility, as well as several regional ministries and the German railway service, Deutsche Bahn. The goal was for it to be leased to people living in cities where hydrogen fueling station infrastructure was more developed"   https://insideevs.com/news/412248/mercedes-glc-f-cell-production-stop/   SEOUL IS SUBSIDIZING 700 ELECTRIC TAXIS "South Korea’s capital, Seoul, is purchasing 700 electric taxis. This subsidy is worth 18.2 million won (around $15,000) per EV, far more than the 12.7 million ($10,300) subsidy for buying an EV for personal use. Seoul is making foreign manufacturers, not only Korean brands, eligible for funding." according to Clean Technica: "Taxi companies in Seoul will be able to choose from 19 different models from 7 manufacturers. These include the Tesla Model S, Tesla Model 3, Jaguar I-PACE, and Nissan Leaf. The city notes that the high mileage of 440 kilometers daily for taxis if electrified will significantly improve air quality."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/04/22/seoul-is-subsidizing-700-electric-taxis/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Do you prefer to buy new or used EV?

Show #621   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 25th October 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   VW CEO CORRECTS TSLA CRITICS: "TESLA IS NOT NICHE" "Less than a month after Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter to share his support for Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess, the German auto executive responded in kind, setting the record straight with some reporters at the company’s recent event for the new Golf." reports Simon Alvarez for Teslarati: "Despite the runaway success of the Tesla Model 3, the reporters indicated that they still view Tesla as a “niche” carmaker, capable of making low-volume vehicles well but otherwise out of its league in the mass market segment.  This was a comment that did not sit well with the Volkswagen CEO. Correcting the reporters, Diess came to Tesla’s defense"   Herbert Diess: "Tesla is not niche. The Model 3 is a large-series model and they are one of the biggest manufacturers of electric-car batteries. We have a lot of respect for Tesla. It’s a competitor we take very seriously"   https://www.teslarati.com/elon-musk-volkswagen-ceo-corrects-tsla-critics-tesla-model-3-niche/   Meanwhile Yahoo Finance says: "Tesla shares soared 18% Thursday -- the biggest jump in 6 1/2 years -- following a surprise quarterly profit report. The rally vaulted the company back above General Motors Co. as the top U.S. automaker by market capitalization. The words of praise may have been a response in kind to Musk, 48, who tweeted last month that Diess was “doing more than any big carmaker to go electric.”   https://finance.yahoo.com/news/tesla-no-niche-automaker-anymore-205812663.html   VERSION 3 OF TESLA’S NEW SOLARGLASS ROOF TILES "Tesla launched the new version 3 of its Solarglass Roof on a public conference call today. Version 3 of the newly renamed Solarglass Roof integrates a number of meaningful improvements to the now larger tiles that promise to improve the cost of the roof while delivering a much faster installation time." says Kyle Field at CleanTechnica: "Tesla has increased the energy density of its roofing product, cut the cost, and increased the manufacturability. Vice president of technology at Tesla Drew Baglino noted that Tesla was aiming to improve the product essentially across the board, improving its cost and beauty as well as manufacturability of the tiles across the board. Version 3 nailed it, delivering significant improvements by:   Increasing the size of the tile Increasing the power density of the tile Dramatically reducing the number of parts and sub-assemblies by more than half (made possible by the larger tiles) Reducing the number of steps in manufacturing (made possible by the larger tiles) Reducing cost (enabled by the larger tiles) Changing some of the materials used Changing the technology that hides the solar cells to something that’s more scalable   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/10/25/everything-you-need-to-know-about-version-3-of-teslas-new-solarglass-roof-tiles/   From Electrek: "Tesla now lists a base 2,000 ft² roof with 10 kW of solar roof tiles installed will cost $33,950 after incentives. Musk claims that Tesla can quickly ramp up to producing 1,000 roofs per week at Tesla’s Gigafactory 2 in Buffalo. However, the biggest difference with the latest version of the Tesla Solar Roof tiles is that the made it easier to install. Musk said that Tesla will also work with third-party installers to certify them for solar roof installations and expect the program to help grow solar adoption. Installations are starting right now with the existing backlog of orders and the company is taking new orders that should start next year."   https://electrek.co/2019/10/25/tesla-solarglass-solar-roof-v3-price/   Tech site The Verge said: "The billionaire CEO claimed the new roof tiles, which are bigger and more power dense, will help “make roofs come alive,” creating a world “where you look around the neighborhood and the roofs are all gathering energy.” “I think in the future, it will be odd for roofs to not gather energy,” Musk said. The promise of the Solar Roof has always been an enticing one. Pay a premium over standard solar panels, and you can get a normal-looking tiled roof that will suck up the sun’s energy all the same. It won’t be for everyone, though."   https://www.theverge.com/2019/10/25/20932831/tesla-new-solar-glass-roof-elon-musk-version-three   TechCrunch reports "“Figuring out how to install it effectively is very non-trivial. And we’re actually going to have […] ‘installathons,’ ” Musk said, which will pit two teams against each other to see who can roof one of two similar-sized/designed roofs faster. Musk reiterated later that there’s “quite a bit of R&D just in the installation process itself.”   Musk also said that while it’s hiring and training specialized installers at first, the plan is to ultimately expand installations to any third-party contractors as well. The total addressable market that Musk sees for this product is somewhere on the order of 100 million houses worldwide, and Musk stressed that the company does indeed intend to make this available worldwide."   https://techcrunch.com/2019/10/25/teslas-new-solar-roof-costs-less-than-a-new-roof-plus-solar-panels-aims-for-install-rate-of-1k-per-week/   BYTON STARTS PRE-PRODUCTION OF THE M-BYTE EV "The Chinese electric car brand Byton has now started production of the pre-production series of its first M-Byte model at its Nanjing plant. The manufacturer says it already has 50,000 reservations for the EV worldwide." reports electrive: "According to the announcement, the M-Byte will be offered at an entry-level price of 45,000 euros excluding VAT and possible government subsidies. This model has a 200 kW powerful rear engine and a 72 kWh battery (360 km range according to WLTP). Byton did not reveal the price for the 4WD high-performance configuration (300 kW drive, 95 kWh battery, 435 kilometre-range) in their press release.  Norway and other Nordic countries will be the priority in the European region, with Norway making up 14,000 of vehicle reservations alone."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/10/26/byton-starts-pre-production-of-the-m-byte/   POLESTAR LAUNCHES FIRST EUROPEAN POLESTAR SPACE IN OSLO "This week, Polestar launched its first European Polestar Space in Oslo, Norway, joining the change of how cars are sold. In the case of Polestar, sales will be carried out online, while Polestar Space will be kind of like stores to show and demonstrate particular models and to inform customers without salespeople." writes InsideEVs.   Jonathan Goodman, Chief Operations Officer at Polestar said: “The Polestar Space is our way of changing the face of automotive retail. With no salesmen and no vehicles on the forecourt, there is no hard sell, no requirement to shift stock and an entirely customer-focussed journey. Consumers will define how much they interact with the exhibits and Polestar Specialists tailoring their experience to their exact needs, not the brand’s. Once they have found the perfect specification, seamless digital interactivity places the vehicle in the customer’s app, ready to be ordered when it suits them. We will put the fun back into buying a car!”   https://insideevs.com/news/378364/polestar-first-european-polestar-space-oslo/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   Set by Chris Meilak: "Would you buy a new EV which only has AC charging (ie Zoe) or CHAdeMO (ie Nissan) today?"   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 258 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #578   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 12th September 2019. WORLD PREMIER: BYTON INTRODUCES THE PRODUCTION M-BYTE "It looks like an SUV, but if you ask the folks say Byton, they'll tell you it's the worlds first SIV, or "Smart Intuitive Vehicle". Whatever you call it, today, at the Frankfurt Auto Show, Byton formally introduced the production version of their first vehicle, the M-Byte. " says Tom at InsideEVs "The M-Byte will launch in early 2021, and initially be limited to the Chinese market. However, sometime in the first half of 2021, Byton plans to begin exporting the M-Byte to the US, and European markets. They plan to be a global brand, and understand that they only get one shot at the launch, and are willing to wait a couple more months to make sure the M-Byte is absolutely ready for customer deliveries. The M-Byte will be offered in rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive configurations. It will also have two battery options. The standard battery is 72 kWh (usable), which Byton claims will offer a driving range of 250 miles. There's also an optional 95 kWh battery (also usable capacity) which Byton claims gives the M-Byte a 323 mile driving range."   Meanhwhile Auto Express confirms: "The new all-electric Byton M-Byte SUV will be sold in right-hand drive in the UK.  Its standout feature is a spectacular 48-inch curved OLED 4k display which runs right across the width of the dashboard - and is controlled via two additional screens, one of them mounted on a fixed steering wheel hub. Byton’s Chief Technical Officer, David Twohig, said the company is targeting comfort and refinement instead of chasing after performance EVs. The car will feature conventional steel springs and dampers, and it will not be offered with air suspension. The M-Byte will cost from around €45,000 in Europe, but no specs or prices have been revealed for UK editions."   https://insideevs.com/news/369530/byton-introduces-production-m-byte-electric-suv/   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/byton/102189/new-2020-byton-m-byte-electric-car-confirmed-for-uk   COX AUTOMOTIVE INVESTS INTO RIVIAN: JOINS FORD, AMAZON, OTHERS "Cox Automotive controls prestigious brands like Kelley Blue Book, Autotrader, and Manheim, but it will also be part of another one: Rivian." says RivianChat.com: "The company says it is due to a “unique approach to building an electrified future” and a “commitment to environmental change.” But the real reason is probably only one: Rivian seems to be a pretty good investment. Amazon and Ford realized that and put more money in the company: $700 million and $500 million, respectively. The intriguing aspect is that Cox Automotive has always taken care of the automotive chain after the car production is complete. In other words, it deals with selling, servicing and evaluating vehicles. This is probably their first move into production, even if not in a direct fashion."   https://rivianchat.com/forum/news/632   VOLVO POLESTAR EXEC SAYS TESLA IS WAY AHEAD IN TERMS OF EFFICIENCY "While Tesla is far from perfect in many ways, we appreciate when a company like Volvo realizes the Silicon Valley automaker's strengths, is willing to outwardly admit them, and then make plans to follow suit." reports InsideEVs: "director of development at Polestar UK Ian Collins mentioned Tesla at a conference in Norway. This is surely not the first time that Volvo / Polestar has brought Tesla to light or even touted the Silicon Valley automaker. Remember, following Polestar 1, the company specifically talked to a Tesla Model 3 rival in the Polestar 2."   Ian Collins: "Tesla has been active in developing its own technology, especially with regard to energy efficiency. There they are far ahead of everyone else. It’s an area that we have to continue to work harder to take back Tesla. We have respect for them as a competitor. We will compete for design, what we offer to customers and technological advances. With technological advances, we not only think about the driveline, but also other parts of the car. I could have pointed out some weaknesses at Tesla that we address in our product. But I won’t."   https://insideevs.com/news/370214/volvo-polestar-exec-tesla-is-leading/   HYUNDAI MOTORSPORT REVEALS THE VELOSTER N ETCR Hyundai Motorsport has today revealed the Veloster N ETCR, its first-ever electric race car, at the International Motor Show (IAA). Based on the road-going Veloster N model, the new car is designed specifically for the new ETCR championship, which will make its debut in 2020. The Veloster N ETCR heralds an exciting new era for Hyundai Motorsport, which will see electric racing become one of the pillars of the company. Designed and built at the company’s Alzenau headquarters, the Veloster N ETCR is fully electric, rear-wheel-drive with a mid-mounted motor.   https://www.hyundai.news/eu/brand/hyundai-motorsport-reveals-the-veloster-n-etcr-at-iaa-2019   ELECTRIFY AMERICA CHARGES PORSCHE TAYCAN "Just last week, Electrify America and Porsche made history together. During the official launch of the Porsche Taycan on September 4, 2019, Electrify America (EA) got to show off the incredible capability of its DC fast-charging network." according to InsideEVs: "The Taycan made a 250-mile journey to Niagara Falls, during which it hooked up to EA's network at its Bloomsburg, PA station and charged at an impressive 270 kW. This is the quickest fast-charging speed to date when it comes to passenger EVs. According to the press release, the Taycan charged from 5 percent to 80 percent. It did so in just 22.5 minutes. The release explains that Electrify America and Porsche North America had this planned ahead of time and did prior testing to assure that the results were possible. With such charging speeds becoming a reality, yet another roadblock to EV adoption will soon become a thing of the past."   https://insideevs.com/news/370185/electrify-america-taycan-first-800v-270kw-ev-charging/amp/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. Show #575   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 9th September 2019. Thank you to ROBERT GRACE who has increased his level of support from Producer to EXECUTIVE PRODUCER   CRAIG COOPER has signed up as an EXECUTIVE PRODUCER   A new PRODUCER is KELLY OLAUSON   Another new PRODUCER is JAMES RUSHWORTH   And final new PRODUCER is HELMUT SELKER   PETER MOONEY has signed up to support the show along with MATT ALRIDGE   TESLA BATTERY EXPERTS DESCRIBE MILLION-MILE CELL IN NEW PAPER "Tesla battery research partner Jeff Dahn and his team have released a paper in which they describe this million-mile battery cell." says Charles for Charged EVs: "The new Li-ion battery cell features a next-generation “single crystal” NMC cathode and a new type of electrolyte. Dahn’s team has extensively tested the cells, and believe they could enable a battery pack that lasts over a million miles in an EV. This is a huge advance – the new cells last two to three times longer than Tesla’s current cells – and if the company can bring the new technology into production in a reasonable timeframe, it could radically change the economics of EVs."   The paper says: "“This situation may change with the proposed introduction of “robo taxis”, long haul electric trucks and vehicle-to-grid applications. In the former, vehicles will be driving all day, much like a conventional taxi and undergoing nearly 100% DOD cycling. Long haul trucks will almost certainly run in near 100% DOD situations. Cells in vehicles tethered to the grid will be racking up charge-discharge cycles even when the vehicle is not moving. Clearly EVs destined for vehicle-to-grid applications, robo taxis or long haul trucking, would favor a lithium-ion chemistry that could deliver many more charge-discharge cycles in a decade than an EV that was destined for typical commuter driving where high energy density to give the longest driving range for weekend trips might be emphasized. Electric buses represent another application where duty cycles approaching 100% DOD are used on a daily basis.”"   https://chargedevs.com/newswire/tesla-battery-boffins-describe-million-mile-cell-in-new-paper/   My thoughts: If this is what they’ve made public, what is the current state? How old is this data? “skate to where the puck is” Tesla making their own cells Long after the car is fully depreciated, the battery has high worth for storage Good for Tesla Semi which needs (Can have) a large pack, cars only need 300-400 miles     PRODUCTION OF ID.3 AT ZWICKAU PLANT TO START IN NOVEMBER The countdown is running: series production of the ID.3 is to start at the Zwickau vehicle plant in November. Currently, the last robots are being installed and the assembly line is being commissioned. The ID.3 is the first model in an entirely new generation of electric cars based on Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive toolkit (MEB). The ID.3 is making its world debut on the evening of September 9 at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt (IAA). The first vehicles are to be delivered to customers next summer. With the ID.3, Volkswagen is launching the largest electric offensive in the automotive industry worldwide. In the next three years alone, production of a total of 33 models based on the MEB, spread across all the Volkswagen Group’s volume brands, is due to start. At Zwickau, Volkswagen is converting an entire vehicle plant from 100 percent internal combustion engines to 100 percent electric vehicles for the first time. The changeover to electric vehicles already started at the beginning of 2018 and is to be completed by the end of 2020 within the space of about three years. The body shop and the paint shop have already been largely prepared for ID.3 production. The first of two final assembly lines has already been completed. It is here that production of the ID.3 will start in November; production will then be ramped up step-by-step. A total of 12 entirely new buildings or parts of buildings are currently under construction at the plant site. The existing press shop alone has already been extended and prepared for the new era for a total investment of €75 million. This means that the Zwickau plant will be able to produce all the key body parts for MEB vehicles on site from 2021.   BOSCH AND HANWHA INVEST 230 MILLION IN NIKOLA "US startup Nikola, specialising in fuel cell and battery trucks, has announced that German companies Bosch and Hanwha have invested a total of 230 million dollars with at least 100 million dollars each." says Electrive: "This comes just a few days after the Iveco owner CNH Industrial became the main investor with a 250 million dollar investment. A joint venture for the development of trucks in Europe is also being established with parent company Iveco. In the course of the “Series D” investment round, Nikola wants to earn a total of one billion dollars. The cooperation with Bosch is nothing new for Nikola. For years, the German supplier has been an important development partner for fuel cells and battery technology for heavy trucks. “Bosch’s investment confirms its commitment to the development of hydrogen technology and hydrogen infrastructure,” writes Nikola."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/09/07/bosch-and-hanwha-invest-230-million-in-nikola/   MCDONALD'S GOLDEN ARCHES NOW DOUBLE AS SIGNPOSTS FOR ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING "In Sweden, McDonald's is catering to the growing numbers of electric car drivers by turning its classic Golden Arches restaurant signs into signposts letting people know where they can charge their vehicles. " reports AdAge: "The company has charging stations at 55 restaurants in the country, making it the largest restaurant chain for electric car charging. Ultimately it wants to offer the service at every drive-thru restaurant. Responding to a survey in which 48 per cent of people said it was difficult to find out where charging stations were located, McDonald's is now making them even more prominent.  Created via agency Nord DDB, the first signs have been installed by McDonald's restaurants in Mjölby and Munkedal. In addition to the current price for charging, the signs also display the prices of Big Macs and Happy Meals, gas-station style."   BYTON SET TO UNVEIL PRODUCTION M-BYTE AT FRANKFURT "Next week at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), Byton will formally introduce the production version of its all-electric SUV, the M-Byte." reports Tom for InsideEVs: "The M-Byte will be available in two configurations: a rear-wheel-drive model with a 268 hp electric motor that pumps out 295 lb-ft of torque. There's also an all-wheel-drive option with dual motors totaling 470 horsepower and 524 lb-ft of torque. Bosch is supplying Byton with its drive motors and power electronics.  The standard battery pack is 71 kWh, and there's also a 95 kWh pack available as an option. Byton had announced that the base M-Byte will cost $45,000 when it launches in the US in 2020, however that was before there was any talk of tariffs on Chinese goods. It will be interesting to see how that plays out. The M-Byte will initially launch in China, late this year. It won't be available in the US or Europe until sometime in mid-to-late 2020, so a lot can happen on the tariff war in that time."   https://insideevs.com/news/369403/byton-to-unveil-production-m-byte-at-frankfurt-motor-show/   ELON ACCEPTS NICO ROSBERG’S OFFER TO DRIVE MODEL S ON THE ‘RING "It looks like Elon Musk will have a "decent driver" piloting the Tesla Model S at the Nürburgring, but that's if the billionaire's words hold true in the days to come." says MOtor1.com: " Last week, Musk tweeted that Tesla is bringing over the Model S to the Green Hell – presumably trying to take the inexistent challenge that the recently-launched Porsche Taycan has set at the dreaded race track. Retired Mercedes Formula 1 racer, Nico Rosberg, responded to his tweet and offered to be the one to lap the Model S. Of course, Musk accepted."   https://www.motor1.com/news/369477/nico-rosberg-model-s-nurburgring/     QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week.

Was habe ich mir dabei gedacht.

It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   BILL FORD SAYS ELECTRIC MUSTANG CROSSOVER WILL 'GO LIKE HELL' "Ford is dead serious about its electrification plans. The Blue Oval company wants to have a hybrid, PHEV, or all-electric version of its every model, and, in addition, it will launch a number of completely new nameplates with electric powertrains. One of these new members of the lineup will be a Mustang-inspired crossover which is scheduled to arrive on the market sometime next year." reports Anthony Karr for Motor1.com: "Emphasizing Ford’s new strategy, the automaker’s Executive Chairman Bill Ford said the Mustang-inspired electric crossover "is going to go like hell." "When we first started talking about electrification, there was this thought that there had to be a trade-off: it was either going to be green and boring and no fun, or really exciting but burn a lot of fossil fuels," Bill Ford said during the Crain's Detroit Business Newsmaker of the Year luncheon. "Electrification has come to the point that you can do both."   https://www.motor1.com/news/306870/ford-mustang-electric-crossover-go-hell/   KIA REVEALS NEW E-SOUL FOR EUROPE: TWO BATTERY OPTIONS "The next-generation Kia Soul EV, under the new name of Kia e-Soul, is coming to Europe where sales will begin by the end of the fourth quarter. Pricing will be announced later." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "Kia will unveil the new e-Soul at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show (the car debuted at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show). The European version will be offered in two versions, which shares batteries/powertrains with Kia e-Niro and Hyundai Kona Electric: Long-range: 64 kWh battery and 150 kW electric motor. Standard: 39.2 kWh battery and 100 kW electric motor. The Long-range version will be able to go 452 km (280 miles) according to WLTP test cycle, compared to an EPA rating of 243 miles (391 km) in the U.S. The Standard version will go 277 km (172 miles) WLTP. Kia boasts that the new battery cells have 25% higher energy density (250 Wh/kg vs 200 Wh/kg), while the new powertrain is 30% more efficient than “Europe’s current best-selling electric car”. The new electric Soul breaks with CHAdeMO and is equipped with CCS charging inlet for DC fast charging (up to 100 kW)"   https://insideevs.com/kia-announced-new-e-soul-for-europe-unveiling-in-geneva/   SEAT LOOKS TO THE FUTURE OF CITY MOBILITY WITH THE MINIMÓ ELECTRIC QUADRICYCLE "SEAT is taking a giant leap in its urban micromobility strategy with the presentation of the Minimó at this year’s Mobile World Congress, a concept car that has been developed as a mobility platform, showcasing the company’s vision of the urban mobility of tomorrow. The Minimó brings together the benefits of the smaller dimensions of a motorcycle with the safety and comfort of a larger passenger vehicle, minimising the many frustrations of travelling around our cities."   FCA WILL SPEND $4.5 BILLION IN MICHIGAN TO BUILD ELECTRIFIED JEEP WAGONEER "Fiat Chrysler just announced a $4.5 billion investment in Michigan manufacturing facilities, including a new one in the city of Detroit set to build an “all-new three-row full-size Jeep SUV,” as well as investment in five other plants, one of which will build the next-gen Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Wagoneer—both with electrified variants." says Jalopnik: "FCA says its Warren, JNAP, and Mack assembly plants will crank out plug-in hybrid versions of the vehicles built there, and that there will be “flexibility to build fully battery-electric models in the future.” CEO Mike Manley says in a quote that FCA plans to build at least four plug-in hybrid Jeeps."   https://jalopnik.com/fca-will-spend-4-5-billion-in-michigan-to-build-cars-l-1832903198   BYTON M-BYTE ELECTRIC SUV HEADED FOR MASS PRODUCTION THIS YEAR "The electric vehicle startup BYTON is said to unveil the mass-produced model of the screen-filled M-Byte in the middle of 2019 and the vehicle’s presale will start at the same time" according to InsideEVs: "The M-Byte concept was first shown at the CES 2018. With shorter front and rear overhangs, the BEV model gets more room for passengers. Boasting a futuristic gene, it is outfitted with such configurators as LED headlights, luminous marks, two-tone vehicle body as well as the trendy taillight cluster that stretches across the rear end."   https://insideevs.com/byton-m-byte-electric-suv-headed-for-mass-production-this-year/   POLL SUGGESTS MORE AMERICANS MIGHT BUY AN EV—IF ONLY THEY HAD A PLACE TO CHARGE "Almost three-quarters of Americans see electric cars as the future of transportation, according to a new Volvo/Harris poll released Tuesday" report Eric at GreenCarReports: "In the poll conducted last October, which surveyed 1,510 drivers in the U.S. during the middle of October, including 250 electric-car drivers, 74 percent of all respondents agreed that electric cars are the future. Among EV drivers, the number rose to 79 percent. The biggest obstacle wasn't range but available charging infrastructure: 61 percent of respondents cited more charging infrastructure as the biggest factor holding back their purchase."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1121698_poll-suggests-more-americans-might-buy-an-evif-only-they-had-a-place-to-charge   24M DELIVERS FIRST COMMERCIAL SCALE, HIGH ENERGY DENSITY SEMI-SOLID NMC LI-ION CELLS Finally to Green Car Congress: "24M announced that it has developed and delivered commercially-viable, high energy density lithium-ion cells. Using its novel SemiSolid lithium-ion battery design in its pilot facility (earlier post), 24M achieved energy densities exceeding 250 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg), the current state-of-the-art industry benchmark for EV applications. The demonstration of this technology is a major milestone on the 24M roadmap to achieving even higher energy densities (>400 Wh/kg) using its capital-efficient manufacturing process."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/02/20190226-24m.html   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Can you help me fight the fossils? Read more about Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 7th January 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   EXPERTS BELIEVE SALES OF COMBUSTION ENGINE CARS PEAKED IN 2018 "After speaking to specialists from the auto industry, Financial Times published a comprehensive report about the fossil-burning engine. Interestingly, several experts told the publication sales of ICE-powered vehicles peaked in 2018 which basically means it’s unlikely that more cars with ICEs will be sold within a year in the future." according to Anthony Karr for Motor1.com: "In 2019, global vehicle sales aren’t expected to decline as electric vehicles are expected to quadruple their market share to about 1.6 percent. Even if overall sales increase through the next 12 months, deliveries of ICE-powered vehicles will likely fall, say specialists." Felipe Munoz, global automotive analyst for Jato Dynamics, told Financial Times: "We will probably see the peak of combustion engine car sales in 2018 based on global sales through October, plus estimates for November and December".   https://www.motor1.com/news/299727/experts-ice-sales-peaked-2018/   TESLA GIGAFACTORY GROUNDBREAKING: CHINESE MODEL 3 PRODUCTION ON TRACK "Late Sunday evening, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the automaker was hours away from an important event." reports Wade Malone for InsideEVs.com: "Now we know the official groundbreaking of Tesla’s Chinese Gigafactory in Shanghai will occur on Monday. Musk says initial construction of the Shanghai Gigafactory is set to be completed before the end of summer."   ElonTweets!   @elonmusk "Looking forward to breaking ground on the @Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory today!"   @elonmusk "Aiming to finish initial construction this summer, start Model 3 production end of year & reach high volume production next year"   @elonmusk "Shanghai Giga will produce affordable versions of 3/Y for greater China. All Model S/X & higher cost versions of Model 3/Y will still be built in US for WW market, incl China."   @elonmusk "Shanghai Giga production of Model 3/Y will serve greater China region"   As for Simon at Teslarati, he says: "Clues about Tesla’s Gigafactory 3 groundbreaking event emerged this weekend, ironically after Tesla’s critics shared information about the route of Elon Musk’s private airplane. By late Sunday (early Monday morning in China), invitations for the event emerged online. Tesla owner-enthusiast @vincent13031925, for one, shared an image of an invitation for the Gigafactory 3 ground-breaking event, forwarded by a Shanghai Tesla Owner’s Group member."   https://insideevs.com/breaking-tesla-china-gigafactory-groundbreaking-model-3/   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-gigafactory-3-china-breaking-ground-shanghai/     BYTON M-BYTE'S INFOTAINMENT SCREEN IS 7 IPADS WIDE Chinese startup Byton took the automotive world by surprise last year at the Consumer Electronics Show where it exhibited the M-Byte concept with a gargantuan touchscreen display for the infotainment system." reports Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com: "For this year’s show in Las Vegas, the company decided to unveil the production-ready cabin of its electric SUV, complete with an expansive 48-inch display or a bit wider than seven iPads put side by side. Tesla’s 17-inch screen doesn’t look so big anymore, does it? Dubbed the “Shared Experience Display” (SED), it’s by far the largest screen you will find in the automotive industry and stretches from one A-pillar to the other. While at a first glance it might seem distracting because of its sheer size, Byton mentions it does not interfere with the driver’s line of sight." "A full reveal of the Byton M-Byte production version is programmed for the middle of the year ahead of production start towards the end of 2019 at the Nanjing plant in China. Buyers will get to pick between a 71-kWh, 250-mile base model estimated to start at $45,000 and a more expensive 95-kWh, 325-mile variant. The M-Byte electric SUV will be available at first in homeland China, with North America and Europe to follow in 2020"   https://www.motor1.com/news/299938/byton-m-byte-48-inch-touchscreen/   TRELUYER AND DE VRIES JOIN VIRGIN FOR MOROCCO FE TEST "Triple Le Mans winner Benoit Treluyer and Formula 2 race winner Nyck de Vries will drive for Virgin Racing at this weekend’s post-race ABB FIA Formula E test in Marrakesh." says Alex Kalinauckas for motorsport.com: "Factory Audi driver Treluyer will make his first official FE appearance in the test, which follows the Marrakesh E-Prix on January 12 and is open to any driver that has never held an eLicence. De Vries, who will race for the ART Grand Prix F2 squad in 2019, took part in the corresponding test in Marrakesh for the works Audi squad in ’18.The 23-year-old acted as Audi’s reserve FE driver for the 2017/18 season finale in New York last July. The 2018/19 season is Virgin’s first FE campaign as an Audi customer squad."   https://www.motorsport.com/formula-e/news/treluyer-de-vries-virgin-marrakesh-test/4320159/   TESLA DELIVERS MASSIVE FLEET TO RENTAL CAR COMPANY AVIS According to Electrek "Tesla has delivered one of its biggest fleets to date. We have learned that rental car company Avis bought several hundred Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles. Avis took delivery of a fleet of around 280 Tesla vehicles in Skoppum, a town about an hour south of Oslo."   https://electrek.co/2019/01/07/tesla-fleet-rental-car-company-avis/     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Welcome to our special podcast episodes from AutoMobility LA and the Los Angeles Auto Show. For the past few years, AutoMobility LA has showcased the ever-advancing technology in the automotive world. Our first episode is direct from the technology tent on the eve of the opening day of the traditional show. The Byton concept SUV has a 49-inch touchscreen interface. Image © James Raia/2018 Co-host Bruce Aldrich is producing the show remotely, but James Raia (that's me) will be reporting live from the showroom floor for three days. We'll start with two diverse guests, Florian Bauer from the concept electric vehicle Byton and Jeremy Levi, a sales consultant for Airstream. Bauer is director of product management for Byton. It's considered a pending top competitor for Tesla and it's about year from its debut in China, where its financial backing is located. If Byton's future advances as planned, the M-Byte crossover and E-Byte sedan will debut to the American public via its U.S. base in Santa Clara, California in June 2020. Bauer and I discuss the unique Byton features. With an advertised base price of $45,000, the Byton is marketed for drivers and passenger to operate the vehicle or controls some of its features with Amazon Alexa voice commands or hand gestures. The command operation is a touchscreen that extends the entire length of the dash. It's 49 inches long and 10 inches high. The seats in the spacious SUV swivel so passengers can face each other. Levi discusses the new fully connected Airstream Classic. With all-new Smart Control Technology, the Airstream Classic's most important features and amenities can be monitored and controlled from anywhere. Travelers can stay connected to the comforts of home, even when far from it. In addition to its availability on this website, the Weekly Driver Podcast is also available on iTunes. All episodes of our podcasts are also archived on this website, TheWeeklyDriver.com. We welcome your comments and episode suggestions. https://blog.adafruit.com/2017/08/01/the-atsamd51-is-here-adafruit-microchipmakes-atsamd51/ Wow some awesome release news from Microchip about a fancy new chip that just dropped. If you know us (and you’re reading this blog so yeah you probably do) you know we just luuuuv the ATSAMD21 – featured in our M0 Feathers, Metro M0 and even the new Gemma M0 we just put in the shop. The ATSAMD21 has always felt to us like the next evolution for fans of the 8-bit AVRs like the ATmega and ATtiny series – with 256 KB of flash, 32 KB of RAM, 48 MHz Cortex M0+ chipset, USB, tons of timers, peripherals, ADC, DAC, up to 6 SPI/I2C/UART devices… using the SAMD21 feels so roomy and comfortable. Adafruit 2132 One of the most fun projects we’ve had over the last year is porting MicroPython to the ATSAMD21 (which we call CircuitPython since the API deviated a bit). Now, MicroPython works just fine on the SAMD21 and you can build many projects quickly, using the built in Python 3 interpretter. And while we absolutely adore it, it’s just a *little bit* sluggish on the ATSAMD21 as its only a Cortex M0 at 48MHz, and doesn’t have any hardware floating point support. And 32KB of RAM is huge for Arduino but CircuitPython can run out of memory if you’re doing a lot. As we started exploring CircuitPython more and more it became clear we could really use an upgrade path. So we asked Microchip “heyyyy so is there like an upgrade to the atsamd21 that’s maybe a cortex m3 or m4, with more RAM and maybe 100 MHz?” and they were all like “maaaybeeee….plz sign this NDA” and we were like “sweet!” and we got a bunch of ATSAMD51 chips and a datasheet! You can check out the no-longer-sekret datasheet here (PDF). The ATSAMD51 is to the ATSAMD21 as it was in turn to the ATMega328. More! Better! Faster! Here are some quick specs: Cortex M4 core running at 120 MHz Hardware DSP and floating point support Up to 1 MByte flash, 192 KB RAM Sizes ranging from 48-QFN to 128-TQFP (the 48 QFN is *nearly* pin compatible with the ATSAMD21 but it isnt 100% drop in compatible) Some neat new peripherals/upgrades: Built in 1.8V buck for lower power uses (needs an external inductor) Dual 1MSPS DAC Dual 1MSPS ADC Parallel capture controller (for camera/video in) Built in crypto engines with AES (256 bit), true RNG, Pubkey controller Ethernet MAC on the SAME5 series QSPI for fast SPI transfers CAN Bus SD/MMC controller “configurable custom logic” – this one is particularly interesting/weird, you get latches and LUT you can link up PDEC – rotary encoder hardware support The speed, and extra space makes it excellent for our next generation of CircuitPython boards, and the price is pretty good too – only about $3 each for the ATSAMD51G19 in reel qty. Considering its the same list price as an ATmega32u4 it’s an easy choice for us! We also like that the pricing is so competitive with other Cortex M4 suppliers, e.g. STM32F405RGT6 is ~$6.50/1K pcs and the similar ATSAMD51J20A is $3.70 (the STM is faster, the SAM has more RAM, it was hard to find a perfect 1:1 comparison) compared to the Kinetis K20 series (famous for being used in the Teensy 3.2) the MK20DX256 has 25% of the Flash size, 25% as much RAM, 60% of the speed, but costs $1-1.25 more. Competition is heating up! Ambahlahdolnogpf Any how, the Atmel ATSAMD51 series looks really awesome to me, and its now public and you can order some chips even from microchip direct. Some chips are in stock now, such as the ATSAMD51N20A-AU, ATSAMD51P19A-AU, others will be shipping in late October. We’ve already started designing a Feather M4 and Metro M4 and we’ve even gotten it going with Arduino core with some tweaks to the current SAMD core. Img 7279 Excited to try out this chip? We don’t have hardware for sale quite yet (and likely won’t until chips are shipping in larger qty in November) but if you have early hardware access for some reason you can check out our forked Arduino SAMD codebase at https://github.com/adafruit/ArduinoCore-samd/tree/samd51 for our latest code – full 120MHz clocking, GPIO, ADC, DAC, I2C/SPI/UART, USB all basically work but there’s a few tweaks and bugfixes still. The BOSSA bootloader working here: https://github.com/adafruit/ArduinoCore-samd/tree/samd51/bootloaders/x1 and the software bootloader tool here: https://github.com/adafruit/BOSSA_x1/tree/arduino We hope to get these all merged into mainline soon, and also a CircuitPython port that can take advantage of the awesome power that can be unleashed! ----------------------------------------- Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe Join our weekly Show & Tell on G+ Hangouts On Air: http://adafru.it/showtell Watch our latest project videos: http://adafru.it/latest New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ Music by bartlebeats: http://soundcloud.com/bartlebeats -----------------------------------------
