Lil Nas X licensed the beat for “Old Town Road” from an e-commerce platform. He originally bought a non-exclusive copy of the backing track for just $29.99 from a 19 year old Dutch record producer called YoungKio. And he’s not the first hitmaker to do so. Desiigner, Bryson Tiller and Queen Naija have all made hit songs from internet beats. These beats are big business. The arguable market leader, BeatStars, has paid its producers over $50M since its inception in 2008. The platform allows producers to market their beats to MCs and singers, boasting 340,000 active sellers and 1.5M tracks. BeatStars CEO Abe Batshon originally created the company to connect artists who may not live in the music industry hubs in L.A., N.Y., Nashville and Atlanta. His global ambitions were realized—producers on the platform come from all over the world. They release a steady stream of new music, marketing their original and sound-a-like beats to aspiring and emerging artists everywhere turning into ad music, Instagram stories and even Billboard Hot 100 hits. While BeatStars increases access to music, could this commoditization of music devalue the creative process? Nominate Resourceful Designer for The People's Choice Podcast Awards! Become a partner to your clients, not just a graphic designer. Over the past 25 years I've seen many graphic designers start their own business and fail. In most cases it wasn't because they weren't good a graphic designer. It was because that's all they were. They were JUST a graphic designer. If you want to succeed at running your own graphic design business you need to think bigger than being just a graphic designer. You need to establish yourself as a go-to person for all creative, marketing, promotional and branding ideas. You need to establish yourself as a business partner, a sounding board, a problem solver to your clients and not just a supplier of design. If you fail to establish this sort of relationship with your design clients you are dooming yourself to an on call status. Becoming someone your clients call only once they have an established idea and need someone to execute it. How do become more than just a graphic designer? The answer is quite simple. Talk to your clients about their projects. Don't become yes men (or women), who simply do what the client asks of them. That's the easiest way to become just a graphic designer and doom your business. Instead, try to bounce ideas off you clients. Suggest alternatives to what they're asking. Think outside the box. Learn more about their business so that you can suggest things they may not think about. In episode 20 of Resourceful Designer I talked about the importance of building relationships with your design clients and how doing so can propel you into becoming a strategic partner for them. Someone they come to when they need advice or want a second opinion on. That is exactly what I'm talking about when I say don't be just a graphic designer to them. Become someone important to them. If you do establish that kind of relationship, you can count on good quality projects from them for years to come. Tell your clients what you can offer them. One of the biggest problems when dealing with clients is their lack of knowledge of what exactly it is that we do. I discuss this in length in episode 2 of Resourceful Designer. The gist of it is, unless you tell your clients what you can do for them they may look for those services elsewhere. My own brother-in-law took the logo I designed for him and had business cards designed elsewhere because he "didn't know I also designed business cards". Have conversations with your clients about their business. These conversations are the perfect opportunity to suggest things or offer services to help them that they don't know you offer. Your ultimate goal is to become a strategic partner. You will know when you've succeeded with a client when you become a partner of theirs. When I say partner I don't mean in a sense that you own part of their business. What I mean it you become someone they rely on for more than just design. You become a strategic partner when your client counts on you for ideas and advice in running and marketing their business. You become a strategic partner when your client stops giving you direction on the designs you create, and gives you free range to create as you see fit. You become a strategic partner when your name is the fist thing off their lips when your client meets someone else with a business problem. Once you reach that level in the relationship you will be way more than just a graphic designer and your business will have nowhere to go but up. What do you think? TOPICS: Segment #1: "Raiders trade for Carson Palmer" On the final day of the NFL trading period, the Raiders traded a 1st round pick in 2012 and a 2nd/1st conditional pick in 2013 to the Bengals for Carson Palmer. The broken clavicle to Jason Campbell in the Browns game led to this move. Some think the price was too steep, but most of Raider Nation seems happy with the move. Raider Greg is happy and he tells you why. Segment #2: "Browns at Raiders Postgame Review" The Raiders defeated the Browns 24-17 last Sunday after losing Jason Campbell to a broken clavicle early in the game. Although the Raiders lead by 14 points late in the game, the Browns made it too close for comfort by scoring a touchdown then recovering an onside kick. Raider Greg gives you his feelings on the game. Segment #3: "Chiefs at Raiders Pregame Breakdown" The Chiefs are coming to town this Sunday. The game was won on an interception by Michael Huff (being called, "The Immaculate Interception") when the Raiders had only 10 men on the field. Afterwards Hue Jackson told the team that "Coach Davis" was the 11th man on the field during that last play. Raider Greg details the game and we include audio from Hue Jackson in the emotional locker room. Segment #2: "Amy Trask - CEO on the Go" The Raiders are in good hands with Amy Trask as CEO. Raider Greg has met her, and tells you his feelings about her. We also include audio of a radio Amy did recently where she speaks of her long relationship with Al Davis and the emotional win in Houston. We also include audio of former Raiders players, coaches, and others who Al Davis' life had touched. We hear reactions from John Madden, Raymond Chester, John Gruden, and Greg Papa. Segment #3: "Cleveland Browns at Oakland Raiders Pregame" The Browns are 2-2 and cannot be taken lightly in this game. It will be a special game. There will be special tributes to Al Davis both before the game and at half-time. Raider Greg breaks down this game matchup. Segment #4: "Our Boneline Voicemail Segment" In this show we have three sections to our Boneline portion of the show. Jeanette hosts episodes of "Behind the Shield Online" for the Raiders on Raiders.com. She is a former Raiderette, and this year she became the director of the Raiderettes! She is a busy woman, and Raider Greg shows her our appreciation for all of her great work for the Raiders. Greg also chats with a Patriots fan who was at our party. Erin is obviously a devoted Patriots fan. One of our tailgate regulars, Juan Jorge, tried to stump her by asking her to name the Patriots offensive line from tackle to tackle. She proceeded to rattle off the names without hesitation as you'll see on the video.
