Pierre was born and lived in the UK until 1970, when he moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he stayed for 15 years. He returned to the UK from 1985 to 1992, then moved back to São Paulo, Brazil, until 1998. In 1998, he relocated to Fort Lauderdale, USA, and became a US citizen in 2006. He is now retired and lives near Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Pierre's wife is Brazilian. They married in Rio in January 1972 and recently celebrated their 53rd anniversary. They have three sons: the oldest are identical twins (45), and the youngest is 41. His youngest son served in the US Army Reserve and later in the US Airborne. They have five grandchildren so far. Pierre developed psoriasis in his early twenties, which worsened over time. He also experienced minor intestinal issues that gradually became more severe, leading to serious inflammation and infections. In 1993, he was diagnosed with diverticulitis, which he assumes is linked to autoimmune disorders. In 1999, Pierre underwent a successful sigmoid colon resection in the USA for diverticulitis. Post-surgery, he was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). For 19 years, he followed ADA guidelines under the care of an endocrinologist, but his T2D progressed to the point where he required insulin. At his peak, he was taking 240 units of insulin daily, which contributed to his weight reaching 280 lbs (he is 5'7”). In November 2018, after watching videos by Dr. Jason Fung, Pierre adopted a low-carb, healthy fats diet, primarily keto, with intermittent fasting (16:8). Last year, he transitioned to a 98% carnivore diet, eliminating most plants. The results have been remarkable. Over the years, Pierre has lost approximately 98 lbs (with about 20 lbs left to lose), improved his eGFR, stabilized his psoriasis, and reduced his medications from 7-9 to just two: 10 mg Lisinopril and insulin as needed. His Triglyceride/HDL ratio improved from 4.78 to under 1, with triglycerides dropping from 220 to under 75 and HDL rising from 46 to the high 90s. Recently, Pierre struggled to keep his A1c below 6% without 50 units of insulin daily, which caused weight gain. Determined to reduce his insulin dependency, he joined Revero and is now under the care of Dr. Jarrouge, who has been incredibly supportive. While he has successfully reversed some weight gain, it's clear that his pancreas has suffered over the years and can no longer produce sufficient insulin. As a result, he needs a baseline insulin dose to maintain an A1c of 6% or below. I started looking into grant writing, and realized that this is kind of like being the garbage man of the industry. There's just not a lot of people that want to do it. This quote from our guest this week, Juan Whiting, may be true in that there are not many professionals who want to take on this task, but it can be a necessary and prudent decision for an early-stage company or growers/ranchers to access capital without giving away equity. Juan Whiting is the owner of a consultancy called Stray Acres - a grant writing consulting company that develops tailored funding strategies and grant proposals for high-impact agricultural projects around the world. Juan also serves as an agricultural specialist with the US Army Civil Affairs department as a subject matter expert. He recently authored a book titled The Holistic Funding Approach: Powerful Techniques and Strategies to Put Millions of Agricultural Grant Funding in the Right hands”. Right after high school, Juan's path led him into missionary work with the LDS church in Kenya. He was immediately exposed to a civil war and food insecurity. This began to cement in his mind the importance of agriculture. Following some training with the US Marine Corps and graduate schooling, Juan found his way back into Africa, this time into Rwanda, for the next 6 years working on ag impact investment projects for a foundation before returning to the states to start Stray Acres. This episode is all about Juan's fascinating journey into agricultural farm management in a developing country, the US Army's modern day Monument's Man program, the nuances of grant writing, and much more. Enjoy!

Writing in a Journal, Part 2 This is episode 713 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. When I was in the National Guard and US Army Reserve we used after action reports to help improve our unit's performance. We talked about what happened, what could have been better, and what we would do to accomplish more. We used those reports and the conversations to help improve the success of the unit. When I was a high school principal A colleague suggested that I start using journaling to help me problem solve. He was right. It was amazing what having a conversation with myself at the end of the workday did for me. It helped work through challenges and create better solutions. I still have conversations with myself through journaling. I focus on asking these three questions: 1. What happened? 2. What went right and what went wrong? 3. What would I do differently next time? My focus today is talking about what to write and determining the frequency that you will write. Try journaling to help you become better at working through challenges. You won't regret it. Before you go... You could help support this podcast by Buying Me A Coffee. Not really buying me something to drink but clicking on the link on my home page at https://stevenmiletto.com for Buy Me a Coffee or by going to this link Buy Me a Coffee. This would allow you to donate to help the show address the costs associated with producing the podcast from upgrading gear to the fees associated with producing the show. That would be cool. Thanks for thinking about it. Hey, I've got another favor...could you share the podcast with one of your friends, colleagues, and family members? Hmmm? What do you think? Thank you! You are AWESOME! They assess China's defense spending is around $470 billion, about one-third of the U.S. defense budget, and detail what categories they included and excluded. The conversation explores the analytical shortcomings of current estimates, emphasizing the need for appropriate exchange rates and like-for-like item comparisons between China's and the U.S.'s defense budgets. They also discuss China's military priorities and modernization efforts and key factors that may determine the future trajectory of Chinese defense spending. Dr. M. Taylor Fravel is the Arthur and Ruth Sloan Professor of Political Science and director of the Security Studies Program at MIT, specializing in international security with a focus on China and East Asia. He is the author of Strong Borders, Secure Nation and Active Defense: China's Military Strategy Since 1949, with numerous publications in leading journals like International Security and Foreign Affairs. A Rhodes Scholar and Andrew Carnegie Fellow, he holds degrees from Middlebury, Stanford, LSE, and Oxford. Fravel also serves on the board of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations and leads the Maritime Awareness Project. Dr. George J. Gilboy is a senior fellow at the Center for International Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). George concurrently heads Woodside Energy's Tokyo office. From 2013 to 2018, George was chief economist and vice president of business environment in Perth, leading Woodside's corporate forecasting team. George lived and worked in China from 1994 to 2013 in roles with Woodside, Shell, Cambridge Energy Research, and Tsinghua University. George holds a BA from Boston College and a PhD in political economy from MIT. Dr. Eric Heginbotham is a principal research scientist at MIT's Center for International Studies and a specialist in Asian security issues. Before joining MIT, he was a senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation, where he led research projects on China, Japan, and regional security issues and regularly briefed senior military, intelligence, and political leaders. Prior to that he was a senior fellow of Asian Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. After graduating from Swarthmore College, Heginbotham earned his PhD in political science from MIT. Writing in a Journal: Having a Conversation with You. This is episode 711 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Try journaling to help you become better at working through challenges. You won't regret it. Before you go... You could help support this podcast by Buying Me A Coffee. Tulsi Gabbard, 4-term congresswoman and 2020 presidential candidate, is a combat veteran currently serving as Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Reserve. Trump adds RFK Jr., Tulsi Gabbard to his transition team as he recruits supporters 'across partisan lines'
Today we were thrilled to welcome back Erik Milito, President of the National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA). Erik has served as President of NOIA since 2019 following 17 years in several leadership roles at the American Petroleum Institute and prior experience as an attorney in the Solicitor's Office of the US Department of the Interior. Erik served on active duty in the US Army as a Judge Advocate from 1995 to 2000 and continued his service in the US Army Reserve from 2000 to 2004. NOIA's mission is to advance and promote the interests of the offshore oil, gas, wind and ocean minerals industries. We last hosted Erik on COBT in April 2021 (episode linked here) and were excited to reconnect for an update on offshore activity. In the discussion, Erik provides an overview of the NOIA's role to promote favorable policies related to offshore leasing, permitting, and regulation covering all flavors of energy including oil and gas, wind, carbon capture and storage and minerals. We start the conversation with Erik reminding us of the importance of the Gulf of Mexico as a booming region for the country and then dig into the challenges of offshore wind as an emerging sector. We cover the fascinating contrast of lease sales in the current administration compared to historical numbers. As the episode title mentions, this will be the first year since 1958 without a single federal offshore lease sale. We touch on advances in technology as current operations explore deeper depths / higher pressures in recent years, and we dig into how Erik sees the offshore wind industry developing from the services standpoint over the next couple of years. We also cover the complex issues around insurance and decommissioning platforms. We move on to discuss the positive relationship with the fishing industry and the significant role that the coastal state governments play in the world of the NOIA. Erik shares his perspective on Washington DC, the current climate given the election, and his sense of the public's mood and attitude towards the various sources of energy that the NOIA is involved in. We wrap up the discussion by getting Erik's thoughts on the progress of carbon capture over the last few years and the slower pace of offshore versus onshore CO2 projects and he urges that more progress would be possible with the cooperation of the government around permitting and regulatory support. We end the discussion with the areas that Erik is most optimistic about for the NOIA's membership which includes opportunities in the Gulf of Mexico. It was a fantastic conversation. Thanks to Erik for joining us! Mike Bradley opened the conversation by highlighting that trading in markets last week could be summed up briefly in two words: “volatility & reversal”. On the bond market, he highlighted that the 10-year bond yield was trading modestly lower due to a cooler-than-expected PPI. He also noted that this was a heavy economic reporting week with July CPI set to report on Wednesday and Initial Jobless Claims & Retail Sales on Thursday. On crude oil, he highlighted that WTI price was down ~$2/bbl. on Tuesday due to monthly reports from the IEA & OPEC showing minor 2024 demand reductions. He noted that despite these two demand datapoints that WTI still rebounded by ~$6/bbl. over the 5+ trading days due to improving technicals (WTI price back above its 50/100 day moving averages) and growing supply concerns (potential Iranian retaliation against Israel & Ukrainian incursion into Russia). He rounded out the conversation by highlighting that 3mo rolling forward copper prices have declined over the last 4-5 weeks (~$10.5k/MT down to ~$9k/MT) due to continued global demand concerns and elevated LME Copper inventories. He also noted that copper prices were getting bid up this week due to a workers s

In Part 4 of CONTRA VII, Dimitri and Khalid begin exploring the musical origins and Shakespearean career arc of the East San Francisco Bay's most legendary quirked up white boys (and eventual Castle Bank victims) Creedence Clearwater Revival, including: the murky and arguably Islamic roots of blues music in the Mississippi Delta, growing up in the sleepy post-war SF suburb of El Cerrito, Tom and John Fogerty getting blues-pilled by the local black radio stations in Oakland, John getting constantly hit on by Christian Brothers at Catholic school, joining forces with schoolmates Stu Cook and Doug Clifford, becoming Tommy Fogerty and the Blue Velvets, signing with the offbeat dirtbag cawmedy jazz label Fantasy Records in 1963, being forcibly named “The Golliwogs” to ride the Bri'ish Invasion wave, John's unfortunate stint in the US Army Reserves from 1966-68, rebooting as Creedence Clearwater Revival during San Francisco's Summer of Love, John's deep hatred of the MK Silk Topper Grateful Dead scene, his even deeper hatred of LSD, Timothy Leary, and stoner culture, his insistence that they always play sober despite CCR's tactical appeal to the psychedelic crowd on “Suzie Q” and “I Put a Spell on You”, John's assumption of full Stalinist leadership over the band, his growing anxiety that there's “somethin' missing” in Doug's shuffle beat, and the construction of Fogerty's mythical bayou from the violent fever dream swamp of the Vietnam War, the political assassinations of 1968, San Francisco MK culture, and President Richard Nixon.

Being in the US Army Reserve requires discipline. And commitment. And top-notch performance. If you fail at any of these there can be serious consequences…including being discharged. One of the requirements is that during “battle assembly” (weekend training) you have to be there; if a Soldier fails to attend on a consistent basis, they can face that discharge. Such was the case of then Sergeant Marisa Saucedo. She failed to show up for battle assembly—a lot. So much so that almost a year had gone by, and Marisa hadn't shown up for battle assembly. And eventually, she got called in to her commander's office for a disciplinary review for her unsatisfactory attendance and performance. She was about to be kicked out of the Army Reserve. But fortunately, Marisa had an exemplary commander who asked her what she wanted from the Army…she explained that she wanted to serve her country and remain in the Reserves. Then she told her commander why she hadn't been coming to battle assembly: that she was in an abusive relationship and that her significant other was forbidding her from attending battle assembly, but that she was going to get out of the relationship. Her commander gave Sgt. Saucedo a second, and final, chance. That was 20 years ago. Today Marisa is a Command Sergeant Major, the second highest rank for an enlisted Soldier. CSM Saucedo is an exemplary Soldier. And she is also a civilian who holds a career as an Army Reserve Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) Program Director and an Army SARC (Sexual Assault Response Coordinator). Marisa feels like she has the best of both her military and civilian worlds. She loves and excels at her job. Marisa is an extremely articulate and intelligent person…these qualities shine in this episode, and I feel extremely honored and privileged to have her on this show. Because Marisa not only explains what she does as a SARC and Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention SHARP Program Director, but she also was willing to tell us about her sexual assault and interpersonal violence experience, and about her healing journey. There's much benefit to be gained in listening to this episode; I hope you listen to this, and that you Start by Believing; because we all know someone whose life has been affected by rape or sexual assault. And finally, please share this episode with everyone you know. #thrivivors #thejanbrobergfoundation #janbroberg #safeinharmsway #epizonstrategy #intentionallyfearless #thelastimsorry #feelingsmall #sasspodcast #retiredcop #traumainformed #traumainformedexpert #sexassaultvictim #survivorsunite #rapevictim #USArmyReserve #commandsergeantmajor #sarc #sharp #sexualassaultsurvivorstories #podcast #markelconsulting #jessicapridelawfirm #gettraumainformed #safeinharmsway #projectbeloved #saan #irishangel #crimevictimsassistancecenter #coloradoassociationofsexcrimeinvestigators #girlsfightback #outdoordefense #worthfightingfor #thejanbrobergshow #thrivivors #thejanbrobergfoundation #sassyselfdefenseguide #badassselfdefense #imworthfightingfor #vawa #ashforduniversity #amandacoleman #remembermolly #fightrapeculture #forcescience

If you cast your mind back to episode 187, I discussed the war in the North African desert in 1940-41 with Robert Forczyk. The war in the North African desert was pure mechanised warfare and, in many respects, the most technologically advanced theatre of World War II. It was also the only theatre where, for three years, British and Commonwealth, and later US, troops were in constant contact with Axis forces. Robert's follow-up book has just been released, 'Desert Armour: Tank Warfare in North Africa: Gazala to Tunisia, 1942-43'. In this episode of the show, Robert joins me once more. This time, we discuss the fighting in the desert in 1942 through to Mongomery's victory at El Alamein. Robert Forczyk has a PhD in International Relations and National Security from the University of Maryland. He retired as a lieutenant colonel from the US Army Reserves, having served 18 years as an armour officer and is the author of numerous books focusing on WWII. Patreonpatreon.com/ww2podcast
