Actor and author Tasma Walton was enjoying her big break on TV show Blue Heelers in the 1990s in Melbourne when a transformative visit from her grandmother launched her in a new direction.Boonwurrung/Bunurong woman, Tasma grew up in windy Geraldton, in Western Australia in the 1970s, hearing stories from her grandmother about baby whales and women who lived in kelp forests. These stories always featured a bay and very cold water — neither of which were in Geraldton. Many years later, while Tasma was filming Blue Heelers and living in St Kilda in Melbourne, her grandmother came to stay, and the stories she had told Tasma over and over again started to make sense.Except for one tale that had been sanitised for children's ears — a supposed love story between Tasma's great-great-great grandmother, Nannertgarrook, and a sealer man.As an adult, Tasma heard her calling and started to research the truth of what had happened to Nannertgarrook, generations ago.Further informationIf you need help, you can call the National domestic family and sexual violence counselling service on 1800-RESPECT — 1800 737 732.I Am Nannertgarrook is published by Simon & Schuster Bundyi.Tasma was named joint winner, with Robbie Arnott, of the $100,000 ARA Historical Novel Prize for 2025.Watch Reckless on SBS from Wednesday 12 November on SBS, NITV, and SBS ON DEMAND.This episode of Conversations was produced by Alice Moldovan. Hey loves, this one's raw. It's tender. And honestly, it's been a long time coming. In this solo episode, I'm finally opening up about something I've been quietly navigating behind the scenes for years — my explant journey. Yep. Earlier this year, I made the incredibly personal (and powerful) decision to remove my breast implants after over a decade of living in a body that no longer felt like mine. What started as a few random symptoms — fatigue, eczema, rashes, brain fog — turned into a full-on quest to understand what was really going on in my body. From mold toxicity to thyroid issues and being dismissed by doctors over and over… it wasn't until I started listening to my own body's whispers that I realized — something deeper needed healing. If you've ever struggled with trusting your intuition, healing from something invisible, or feeling like your truth doesn't fit into the medical mold — this is for you. What you'll get out of this episode… Why I got implants in the first place (and what they meant to me back then)The slow unraveling of my health, the gaslighting, and the “everything looks normal” resultsWhat years of research, expert interviews, and joining online BII communities with 190,000+ women taught meWhat finally gave me the courage to book the explant surgery — and what I wish I knew soonerThe deep spiritual rebirth and reclaiming of my body that followedHow to choose the right explant surgeon and what every woman should know before surgeryThis Episode Is Sponsored by Health NagFeeling bloated, sluggish, or just off? New data has revealed the media platforms drawing Kiwi kids in, and there's been an unusual trend in the findings. NZ On Air has just released the latest update of the Where Are The Audiences research series, and data shows two in three Kiwi kids are watching YouTube every day, with less reaching for locally made content. NZ On Air's Head of Funding Amie Mills says TVNZ's trying to ensure it's in as many places as it can be in order to reach a solid audience. "It's hard, we don't have a dedicated BBC or ABC in New Zealand, TVNZ is a commercial broadcaster, so they're struggling to survive alongside the other local platforms." Jon Stewart has been a leading figure in political comedy since before the turn of the millennium. But compared to his early years on Comedy Central's “The Daily Show”—when Stewart was merciless in his attacks on George W. Bush's Administration—these are much more challenging times for late-night comedians. Jimmy Kimmel nearly lost his job over a remark about MAGA supporters of Charlie Kirk, after the head of the F.C.C. threatened ABC. CBS recently announced the cancellation of Stephen Colbert's program. And Stewart now finds himself very near the hot seat: Comedy Central is controlled by David Ellison, the Trump-friendly C.E.O. of the recently merged Paramount Skydance. Stewart's contract comes up in December. “You're going to sign another one?” David Remnick asked him, in a live interview at The New Yorker Festival. “We're working on staying,” Stewart said. “You don't compromise on what you do. You do it till they tell you to leave. That's all you can do.” Stewart, moreover, doesn't blame solely Donald Trump for recent attacks on the independence of the media, universities, and other institutions. “This is the hardest truth for us to get at, is that [these] institutions . . . have problems. They do. And, if we don't address those problems in a forthright way, then those institutions become vulnerable to this kind of assault. Credibility is not something that was just taken. It was also lost.” In fact, Stewart also directs his ire at “the Democratic Party, [which] thinks it's O.K. for their Senate to be an assisted-living facility.” “In the general-populace mind, government no longer serves the interests of the people it purports to represent. That's a broad-based, deep feeling. And that helps when someone comes along and goes, ‘The system is rigged,' and people go, ‘Yeah, it is rigged.' Now, he's a good diagnostician. I don't particularly care for his remedy.”This episode was recorded live at The New Yorker Festival, on October 26, 2025. New episodes of The New Yorker Radio Hour drop every Tuesday and Friday. Join host David Remnick as he discusses the latest in politics, news, and current events in conversation with political leaders, newsmakers, innovators, New Yorker staff writers, authors, actors, and musicians. The Southeastern 16 crew offers predictions on LSU's road trip to Alabama, a game shown at 6:30 on ABC. Topics include: LSU is in its first game with interim coach Frank Wilson after Brian Kelly was fired. The Tigers looked disinterested under Kelly in the second half of the Texas A&M loss, so, Wilson's impact will be something to watch. LSU should get All-American linebacker Whit Weeks back. LSU's Garrett Nussmeier looked great two weeks ago at Vanderbilt. If the Tigers' offense can get going consistently, LSU has a number of big-time play-makers who can shine. But Alabama's pass defense, which includes Keon Sabb and Bray Hubbard, has been opportunistic. The Crimson Tide force turnovers on over 3% of snaps. The Ty Simpson-led Alabama offense rarely turns it over and manages to make big plays when it matters. Alabama's Germie Bernard and Ryan Williams are big-time play-makers, but LSU's secondary is one of the country's best. Can Alabama control time of possession as it has in a number of recent wins? And more.
