In this episode, the boys are getting nervous.  They review the recent loss to the lowly St. Louis City FC, and discuss all the terrible defensive collapses.  And woe is Joe! While the boys note that Nashville dodged any damage to their standings in the eastern conference, they still are concerned with the team's recent stretch of play and wonder if they peaked too soon.  Peaking too soon is not something Steve Martin ever did, though.  He peaked early and often and he's still going strong at almost 80.  And while we all can agree that League's Cup sucks and maybe the team management never expected NSC to be this good this season (neither did we!), the boys take a look at the final stretch of the season to talk about what to expect and what they hope will happen.  Finally, they wrap up with some predictions for the upcoming game versus New York City FC in stupid ol' Yankee Stadium.  And they drink beer.

Tim Gallin began his quest to perform in feature films and TV after attending CW Post College on Long Island, NY. His first professional job came by way of the Gong Show in August of 1978. He was a contestant on an Elvis Presley special because Chuck Barris was a fan of The King. After seeing his old high school football coach, Vic Magnotta performing in Taxi Driver, Tim picked up the phone and gave him a call. Magnotta was a stuntman, retired special forces soldier, and Vietnam veteran who became close friends with Martin Scorsese while attending NYU. That fateful phone call created for Tim an opportunity to play football in the film The Wanderers. Through Magnotta's continued offers to perform stunts, Tim met many of the people he would collaborate with over the next 45+ years. When asked about a favorite fight scene he performed in, the Marked for Death fight from the classic film F/X (1986) was Tim's immediate response – and is the starting point of this interview that covers some of Tim's epic experiences in the industry including stunt doubling Tom hanks on Splash and Steve Martin on Only Murders in the Building. Does It Fly?
FREAKY FRIDAY and the SCIENCE of Body Swap Movies

Does It Fly?

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 8, 2025 47:44

It's a time honored trope in movies: one brain, soul, consciousness…whatever you want to call it, either gets placed in a brand new body or gets swapped with someone else's. Sure, it's been done a bunch, but some would argue that it has never been done better than in the 2003 remake of Freaky Friday starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. It's such a simple premise, where a daughter and mother suddenly wake up in each other's bodies, but it's done to particularly hilarious and iconic effect in this version. Now, the inherently “magical” element of two consciousnesses switching places is one thing, and one that's difficult to quantify from a scientific standpoint. But before we can even think about the “swapping” issue, we have to answer the question of what is the nature of consciousness at all. In other words, this is a much heavier episode than we expected it to be when we first set out to make it. Thankfully, we have Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi and Tamara Krinsky to guide you through it all.Check out the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here for more!https://youtu.be/ozzzTDqFIfAFURTHER VIEWINGOK, so obviously, you probably want to have seen the 2003 version of Freaky Friday with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan before watching this episode. Although don't dismiss Disney's 1976 original version of the film that starred no less than future big screen legend Jodie Foster and all-time small screen legend John Astin! Just note that we hadn't seen the newest movie, Freakier Friday, at the time we recorded this episode. But there are a couple of other key body swap movies that Tamara mentions in the episode. One is Penny Marshall's 1988 classic Big, starring Tom Hanks. That's a classic of its decade, and you've probably already seen that one. If you haven't seen Big, well, the only possible explanation we can think of is that you probably weren't a kid in the ‘80s or ‘90s. Just note that this isn't two consciousnesses switching place but rather a kid waking up in his own suddenly adult body. But 1984's All of Me, starring Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin, and directed by Carl Reiner is something of an underrated comedy gem in general…not just for the body-swap genre! And if we can make one more kind of offbeat recommendation: Justice League Unlimited season 3, episode 8 “The Great Brain Robbery” has Flash and Lex Luthor switching consciousnesses, to hilarious results!Don't worry, you still only really need to have seen Freaky Friday to get what we're talking about today, but our questions about the nature of consciousness apply just as much to these other classics! FURTHER READINGDo you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! What Is Consciousness?Hakeem starts off the episode by asking a question that made our heads spin ever so slightly: what is consciousness? Well, to explain that, you can look at it from a scientific and biological/neurological perspective or you can take a more philosophical approach. Somewhere between the two you will find true consciousness. Oh no, now we're talking like the kinds of people who ask deep philosophical questions, too! Sorry for the long readings in those links but there are no easy answers to…oh no, we're doing it again!Theory of Mind“Theory of Mind” sounds more intimidating than it is, and to make up for the extra long readings above, we found one with helpful illustrations for you this time! Hey, it's still from Stanford.Foreplanning and Animal ConsciousnessSure, humans can think of scenarios that haven't happened yet (or, if you're anxious, that may never happen) but if we may quote Hakeem: “We are not the only conscious entities on this planet.” To that end, here's some animal kingdom proof for you! If you want to read that paper he cites about the chimpanzee tricking its food rivals, it's here. Or this creepy bird doing creepy human baby imitations to trick us into giving it food. The Biology of Consciousness? It's as simple as this: when you are anesthetized, certain portions of the brain are inactive, but when you wake up, they activate. Here is a more complicated explanation. BUT remember, correlation does not necessarily equal causation! The Big PictureDon't you love it when Tamara surprises Hakeem during the science section? She recommends The Big Picture by Sean Carroll as a wonderful way to look at some of the questions of consciousness. The History of Freaky FridayFor some more context on how this movie came together, we've got just the thing.“You Are Not the Voice in Your Head”Check out The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself by Michael A. This week on “Talk About Las Vegas With Ira,” Ira welcomes award-winning magician and showbiz veteran Fielding West, fresh from being honored at the inaugural Global Magicians Hall of Fame ceremony in Las Vegas. In this revealing and entertaining conversation, Fielding shares how his magical journey began at the age of nine—sparked by a life-changing gift from his grandfather to help him overcome learning disabilities. That spark eventually led to a bold decision: dropping out of graduate school after a chance encounter with none other than Steve Martin. After driving the comedy icon to a gig and watching him perform, Fielding knew his true calling was on stage, not in a classroom. Fielding dives into the art of misdirection, the thrill of discovering magic's secrets, and the pure joy of an audience's reaction. He shares the hilarious origin of his unique sense of humor—including a childhood prank involving a whoopee cushion—and talks candidly about performing today while managing COPD with an oxygen concentrator, calling it the “bullet catch” for aging magicians. He also reflects on the legendary “magician's graveyard,” names his top three magicians in history, and offers heartfelt insights into his decades-long friendship with master magi-cian Lance Burton. It's a magical, moving, and memorable episode you won't want to miss. (Also Watch Full Podcast Video)

www.patreon.com/banjopodcast   Marc Horowitz (aka the "Banjo Whisperer") is a fantastic player in both 3-finger and clawhammer styles: he came up in the  '60's folk scene in NYC, and became an in-demand sideman and session player, playing on commercials, movie soundtracks, and folk and pop music records, and many more. He's a teacher, and lists a guy named Bela Fleck among his former students. He's a setup technician, personally entrusted by Steve Martin to maintain Steve's stable of instruments. Marc now works as a design consultant with Gold Tone Banjos, and helped bring into existence their flagship Bluegrass Heart model. Even in the face of unimaginable tragedy and grief, Martin Short has always kept his sense of humor. As a young man, he channels three devastating personal losses into becoming a performing dynamo. Instead of being defined by these tragedies, he's emboldened to go out and pursue his acting dreams in Toronto in the 70s. The Canadian city is a hotbed of future comedy icons like Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, and Gilda Radner. And Martin fits right in. It starts with a production of “Godspell,” and Martin never looks back. It takes him to stardom on TV, stage, and the big screen. And now, with “Only Murders in the Building,” a bromance with Steve Martin, and a rumored romance with Meryl Streep, this triple-threat Emmy winner is as hot as ever. And living proof that with grit, determination, and a killer sense of humor, you can survive anything. You can follow Brooke and Aricia on socials at @brookesiffrinn and @ariciaskidmorewilliamss.
