MUSICWe still don't know exactly what happened to get Josh Freese fired from the Foo Fighters but in a recent interview with the New York Times, he reflected on it: “Freese admits to being blindsided by the decision, particularly since no explanation was given. Without providing too much detail, Freese takes some of the blame off of Grohl, pointing his finger elsewhere. “Looking back, it was probably more an issue with their management,” Freese said. https://www.alternativenation.net/josh-freese-points-finger-in-foo-fighters-firing/ Sebastian Bach has some choice words for so-called "vocal experts" who criticize his singing on YouTube. https://ultimateclassicrock.com/sebastian-bach-slams-vocal-experts/ Amy Lee of Evanescence, Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox and Poppy have all posted a photo of the three of themselves on Instagram, leading fans to speculate that a collaborative track is on the way soon. https://www.instagram.com/p/DN0wCHB6gcL/ Jelly Roll has now shed more than 200 pounds, and he's celebrating his weight loss in style, by hopping on a motorized scooter in Berlin, Germany. In this episode, I sit down with Sarena Carpenter, the new executive director of Amarillo Angels, a nonprofit dedicated to walking alongside families and children experiencing foster care. Sarena's warmth and sense of calling shine through as she shares both the mission of Amarillo Angels and her deeply personal story. At just 14 years old, Sarena became the primary caregiver for her four-year-old brother—without the support of systems or services that should have stepped in. That experience now fuels her passion and perspective as she leads work to ensure no child or family in foster care falls through the cracks. This is a heartfelt conversation about resilience, leadership, and the power of community to show up where it matters most.

Is Alaska's grand jury still the people's tool for oversight, or has it become another lever of government control? In this episode of the Must Read Alaska Show, host Ben Carpenter presses Attorney General Treg Taylor on the Supreme Court's controversial move to make him the “gatekeeper” for public access to grand juries. Taylor defends new procedures, acknowledges constitutional concerns, and reveals why he intends to be a “poor gatekeeper” in order to restore public trust. Together, Carpenter and Taylor debate the balance between secrecy and transparency, the risk of runaway grand juries versus weaponized complaints, and whether only a constitutional amendment can guarantee Alaskans' right to use the grand jury to root out corruption. This hard-hitting conversation digs into whether the state's justice system protects the people — or itself.

The Texas Senate could move the GOP's redistricting plan forward in the next few days after the redistricting panel advanced the map on Sunday afternoon. Wasting little time in the second special session, the redistricting committee voted out the map on a 6-3 party-line vote. In other news, Authorities are investigating after Nazi Germany flags were found hanging outside on Rockwall-Heath High School's facade over the weekend. Heath police were called to the Rockwall ISD school at about 6:40 a.m. Saturday after “antisemitic materials” were discovered hanging from the school's east side, police said in a statement; Chris Carpenter, co-owner of Dallas restaurant Hendy's on Henderson, died on Sunday, August 10th after spending the prior evening at the bustling bar. Hendy's has been open barely a month. Carpenter was 41. His cause of death is unknown. Friend and fellow bar operator Andrew Young called him a “high risk, high reward” person who was a “meticulous manager” with a magnetic personality. Friends and family hosted a celebration of life for Carpenter at Hendy's last Thursday; and a lot of questions still remain for the Cowboys after Saturday's 31-13 loss to Baltimore. Send us a textWhen 17 children from the same third-grade classroom vanish into the night, a small suburban town becomes the epicenter of a nightmare that defies explanation. "Weapons," Zach Crager's sophomore directorial effort following his breakout hit "Barbarian," delivers a masterclass in atmospheric horror that will leave you checking the locks on your doors. The film's brilliance lies in its unconventional structure, following multiple characters whose lives have been upended by the mass disappearance. We begin with Julia Garner's haunting portrayal of the children's teacher, quickly becoming the town's primary suspect as suspicion and paranoia mount. Just as we settle into her perspective, the narrative shifts to Josh Brolin's grief-stricken contractor, whose son was among the missing. Brolin delivers one of his most compelling performances in years, particularly during nightmarish sequences that blend reality and the supernatural with disturbing fluidity. What sets "Weapons" apart from standard horror fare is how it balances genuine terror with moments of unexpected humor. Crager demonstrates remarkable control over tone, crafting scenes that can transform from laugh-out-loud funny to skin-crawling terror within seconds. The cinematography enhances this unsettling quality, with the camera constantly in motion, creating a voyeuristic feeling that makes viewers complicit in the unfolding horror. The film lovingly channels influences from horror masters – Spielberg's suburban wonderment turned sinister, Carpenter's patient tension-building, Lynch's dream logic – while establishing Crager's unique voice. The soundtrack, featuring both perfectly chosen needle drops and original compositions, elevates each scene whether building dread or amplifying emotional moments. As the mystery deepens and the film ventures into more overtly supernatural territory, "Weapons" asks us to consider what truly lurks behind the façade of suburban normalcy. While some viewers may debate the effectiveness of its third act, the journey is undeniably gripping from start to finish. Don't miss this theatrical experience that reminds us why watching horror with an audience remains one of cinema's most primal pleasures.Support the show

Roxy Striar & Tara Erickson dive into the suspenseful world of slasher cinema with a Reaction & Review of John Carpenter's iconic 1978 horror classic, Halloween! This genre-defining film introduced audiences to Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis in her film debut, later known for True Lies and Knives Out), a quiet Haddonfield teen whose Halloween night turns into a terrifying game of cat-and-mouse when she becomes the target of a masked killer. Michael Myers, the silent and relentless embodiment of evil, escapes from Smith's Grove Sanitarium and returns to his hometown to stalk new victims—launching one of horror's most chilling franchises. The film also stars Donald Pleasence (The Great Escape, You Only Live Twice) as Dr. Sam Loomis, the psychiatrist determined to stop Michael before he kills again, and Nancy Kyes (The Fog, Assault on Precinct 13) as Laurie's friend Annie. With its minimalist score (composed by Carpenter himself), stark cinematography, and brilliant use of suspense and silence, Halloween set the standard for slasher films to come. Key scenes—such as Michael's haunting figure in the doorway, the POV opening shot, and Laurie's desperate final confrontation—have become some of the most highly searched and iconic moments in horror movie history. Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972), Deathdream (1974), Black Christmas (1974) Director Bob Clark will probably always be remembered for his now classic holiday film, A Christmas Story (1983), released the same year as his previous film, Porky's, which is one of the raunchiest sex comedies of that era! But he started off making horror films, 3 of them in particular, before he moved on to making films in just about every other sub-genre. As you can imagine, it is these 3 horror films that we are going to discuss on this episode. One of them set many of the standards of what would be known as a slasher film, while the others have two very different take on zombies. All made on low to moderate budgets, but still are still so well made, it's a shame that Clark didn't continue on in the horror genre. Maybe that's why he's not remembered as much as names like Carpenter, Cronenberg, or Craven. And that's why we're discussing it now! Films mentioned in this episode: Baby Geniuses (1999), Black Christmas (1974), Black Christmas (2006), Black Christmas (2019), Blood Orgy of the She-Devils (1973), Born on the 4th of July (1989), The Brood (1979), Cat People (1982), Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972), A Christmas Story (1983), Deathdream (1974), Deranged (1974), Duel (1971), Halloween (1978), Hereditary (2018), Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies (1964), Jaws (1975), Last House on the Left (1972), Murder by Decree (1979), Popcorn (1991), Porky's (1981), Porky's II: The Next Day (1983), Prom Night (1980), Return of the Living Dead (1985)

In this eye-opening episode of the Must Read Alaska Show, host Ben Carpenter sits down with forensic journalist and author David Ignell for a deep dive into the constitutional role of grand juries in Alaska—and how that role is being undermined by the Department of Law and the judiciary. At the heart of their conversation is the case of former Ketchikan Police Chief Jeffrey Walls, who was targeted with felony charges by three different prosecutors across three grand juries in two different jurisdictions. Each attempt was thrown out by the court, culminating in a judge dismissing the third indictment with prejudice and expressing a loss of confidence in the Department of Law's integrity. Ignell draws on historical and legal precedent—from the English roots of grand juries to U.S. Supreme Court rulings—to argue that today's grand juries are being deliberately disempowered. He shares insights from his 131-page book and first-hand accounts of how grand jurors, witnesses, and even foremen have been silenced or threatened when attempting to investigate government misconduct. This episode explores troubling patterns of institutional resistance to transparency, including a sealed grand jury report currently locked away in a judge's desk and the state's redefinition of "investigative grand juries" as a means to control outcomes. Carpenter and Ignell make the case for urgent reform—and potentially federal intervention—to restore the public's trust in Alaska's justice system.

“Normal people want the basic human rights that accompany citizenship in any sovereign nation. I don't… I don't live anywhere; I'm not a citizen at all. I don't need my human rights.” The Cold War Cinema team is back with special guest Matthew Ellis, a researcher, artist, and cohost of the Pacific Northwest Insurance Corporation Movie Film Podcast, for a special bonus episode covering Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme. Recently released on home video and streaming, the film follows the cunning, reprobate industrialist Zsa-zsa Korda (Bencio Del Toro) as he swindles his way into a massive infrastructure deal in the country of Upper Independent Phoenicia. Join Matthew Ellis and hosts Jason Christian, Tony Ballas, and Paul T. Klein as they discuss: The Phoenician Scheme's connections to the Congress for Cultural Freedom, a CIA-backed cultural operation from 1950 that weaponized writers, artists, and other thinkers for intelligence operations. How Anderson's film reveals the Cold War origins of the contemporary world in its critiques of capitalism and the neoliberal project. The ways that The Phoenician Scheme breaks Anderson's hermetically sealed aesthetics and alludes to its formal limitations. _____________________ Each episode features book and film recommendations for further exploration. On this episode: Matthew recommends Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later. Paul recommends Matt Zoller Seitz's The Wes Anderson Collection and Louis Althusser's “Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses: Notes Towards an Investigation.” Tony recommends Carpenter's Gothic by William Gaddis. Jason recommends The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World by Vijay Prashad. _____________________ Like and subscribe to Cold War Cinema, and don't forget to leave us a review! “Write your own anxieties. Get into your own psyche. I think if it scares you – like, I'm terrified of guns, and that's where The Purge came from. But here, there were various generational fears and whatnot that led to The Home, Adam's fears and my fears about getting older and our anxiety. So I would say if it's born from your fear, the majority of the audience probably has a similar fear. I think we are communal in that way. Fears are not singular, so I think you should work off your own fears, and on a practical level, if you can keep the budget small, you're in a much better place getting it made. That was key to The Purge getting made, that it was one location,” says James DeMonaco, director and co-writer of the new horror film, The Home. On today's show, we talk with both James DeMonaco and Adam Cantor, co-writers of the new horror film The Home. The Home is about Max (Pete Davidson), a troubled young man, who starts working at a retirement home only to realize its residents and caretakers harbor sinister secrets. As he investigates the building and its forbidden fourth floor, he starts to uncover connections to his own past and upbringing as a foster child. DeMonaco, best known for creating The Purge franchise, and Cantor, an actor-turned-writer, talk about their favorite horror films from the 1970s, the challenge of bringing a 70s vibe to modern horror films, and working with their Staten Island buddy, comedian Pete Davidson and bringing out his intense dramatic performance. DeMonaco also talks about the impact The Purge films have had on our culture. “I grew up watching Romero and Carpenter films and George Miller. I always thought they put great mirrors up to society, and there was always some kind of smuggler's cinema idea, where they were smuggling socio-political themes into the genre's pieces. So sadly, The Purge is reflective of the world we're living in and becoming, I think, more reflective, which is scary. And terrifying. I wish it wasn't, I wish it was a complete fantasy to purge. Unfortunately, it's not right now, and it's seemingly getting worse,” says DeMonaco who weighs in on whether something like The Purge could happen in real life. “I used to say, ‘Absolutely not!' Now, I don't know if I would say that any longer, and that's even scarier to me,” says DeMonaco. To hear more about The Home and the spooky events that h appened on set, listen to the podcast.

The union that represents reporters at Central Oregon’s 122-year-old newspaper is negotiating its first contract with the corporation that bought the outlet last fall. Carpenter Media Group has already laid off nonunion workers at the Bulletin, like the paper’s copy editor, but the Central Oregon NewsGuild says that a contract - and the worker protections it would include - must be in place before any union layoffs could be made. The company has acquired more than 30 newspapers in Oregon alone, including the Pamplin Media Group - and approximately 250 others in the U.S. and Canada. The NewsGuild unit has taken the unusual step of urging subscribers to cancel their subscriptions if the corporate management does not agree to their demands. The Carpenter Media Group declined our request to be interviewed and sent a statement that said it is “dedicated to preserving and strengthening community journalism in the communities we serve.” The company has made deep cuts in other local media outlets it has acquired. Central Oregon NewsGuild leader Morgan Owen is a crime and public safety reporter for the Bend Bulletin. She joins us to share the latest in the story that’s unfolding at her paper.

Segment 1: • Dr. John MacArthur has passed, but his gospel legacy endures. • He was simply a tool in the Carpenter's hand—Christ deserves the glory. • Mourn not fearfully, but gratefully: “Look what Jesus has done.” Segment 2: • MacArthur preached through the New Testament for 42 years, never wavering from expository preaching. • He carried himself with pastoral dignity, never settling for entertainment over shepherding souls. • When death comes, serious men—not silly ones—are the pastors we long for. Segment 3: • College students today can't explain basic Christian doctrines. • Emotional reasoning and claims of oppression now trump truth. • New campus events will tackle why young adults are “deconstructing” their faith. Segment 4: • Baylor University returned $630,000 meant for LGBT research—good news! • Disturbing data: professing Christians report record levels of pornography addiction. • If you're not part of a local church, you're missing vital gospel growth.
