Is America a nation Chosen by God? A New Jerusalem and Shining City on a Hill? What is the shape of Christian Nationalism today? Now 4 years past Jan 6, 2021 and anticipating the next term of presidential office, Yale professors Eliyahu Stern and Philip Gorski join Evan Rosa for a conversation about religion, politics, and the shape of Christian nationalism now.Together they discuss what religion really means in sociological and historical terms; the difference between religions of power and religions of law or morality; the American syncretism of pagan Christianity (perhaps captured in the Qnon Shaman with the horns and facepaint); the connection between nationalism and the desire to be a Chosen People; the supersessionism at the root of seeing the Christian conquest of America as a New Jerusalem; and how ordinary citizens come to adopt the tenets of Christian Nationalism.Eliyahu Stern is Professor of Modern Jewish Intellectual and Cultural History in the Departments of Religious Studies and History and his current project is entitled No Where Left to Go: Jews and the Global Right from 1977 to October 7.Philip Gorski is Frederick and Laura Goff Professor of Sociology at Yale University and is author of The Flag and the Cross: White Christian Nationalism and the Threat to American Democracy (with Samuel Perry) as well as American Covenant: A History of Civil Religion from the Puritans to the Present.Special thanks to our production assistant Zoë Halaban for pitching this conversation.About Eliyahu SternEliyahu Stern is Professor of Modern Jewish Intellectual and Cultural History in the Departments of Religious Studies and History. Previously, he was Junior William Golding Fellow in the Humanities at Brasenose College and the Oriental Institute, University of Oxford. He is the author of the award-winning, The Genius: Elijah of Vilna and the Making of Modern Judaism (Yale University Press in 2012). His second monograph Jewish Materialism: The Intellectual Revolution of the 1870s (Yale University Press, 2018) details the ideological background to Jews' involvement in Zionism, Capitalism, and Communism. His courses include The Global Right: From the French Revolution to the American Insurrection, Secularism: From the Enlightenment to the Present, Modern Jewish Intellectual History, The Holocaust in Culture and Politics. He has served as a term member on the Council on Foreign Relations and a consultant to the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw, Poland. Currently, he is a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the Center of Jewish History. His latest project is entitled No Where Left to Go: Jews and the Global Right from 1977 to October 7.About Philip GorskiPhilip S. Gorski is a comparative-historical sociologist with strong interests in theory and methods and in modern and early modern Europe. He is Frederick and Laura Goff Professor of Sociology at Yale University. His empirical work focuses on topics such as state-formation, nationalism, revolution, economic development and secularization with particular attention to the interaction of religion and politics. Other current interests include the philosophy and methodology of the social sciences and the nature and role of rationality in social life. He's author with Samuel L. Perry of The Flag and the Cross: White Christian Nationalism and the Threat to American Democracy, as well as American Covenant: A History of Civil Religion from the Puritans to the Present.Show NotesTrump: “I'm a nationalist.”Increased ownership and proud identification as Christian NationalismEliyahu Stern, No Where Left to Go: Jews and the Global Right from 1977 to October 7The human practice of religion“ The way one person will invoke Christianity will be something very different than say the way a church or the way another person or another religious figure is going to invoke that term.”Humility and a leap“ The History of the Sacred from Babylon to Beyoncé”Religion vs “The Sacred””Western nationalism itself is, the offspring of a Christian supersessionist appropriation of Judaism.”“A new chosen people”The Deep Story Philip Gorski tells in The Flag and the CrossPagan understandings of nationalism“The Deep Story runs something like this. In this episode, Eric Hsu and Louis Everuss mark their 10,000th follower on Spotify by giving the people what they want, which apparently means exploring a prominent sociological account of the (perplexing) appeal of Donald Trump. By focusing on an essay by the noted American sociologist, Arlie Hochschild, published in 2016 in Contemporary Sociology, they discuss how sociological analysis of emotions can shed new light on various aspects of Donald Trump as a cultural phenomenon. Eric and Louis caution listeners who do not particularly enjoy Eric's bad Trump impersonation to consider sitting this one out. For everyone else, you've been warned. In this week's episode, both of our storytellers share stories about the problems of finding representation of diverse skin tones in science and medicine. Part 1: While preparing for a lecture, Stacy Vasquez finds a racist term on a skin slide. Part 2: While learning about Lyme disease in medical school, LaShyra Nolen isn't satisfied when the professor can't tell her what the rash would look like on dark skin. As a first-generation Chicano in STEM, Stacy Vasquez recognizes the importance of addressing the STEM achievement gap and creating an inclusive space that will inspire students from marginalized groups. His dissertation researched and examined the impacts of a multicultural curriculum in a traditional microbiology course. With an academic background in microbiology, he was always interested in learning how the discrete, scientific information was related to issues impacting society. Traditional microbiology courses often place heavy emphasis on rote memorization of discrete facts and focus very little on how the content relates to societal issues. The multicultural curriculum aimed to teach students about various social issues while still managing to teach the objective, scientific content. The relevant topics were intended to spark student interest in efforts to strengthen their academic performance. He has continued implementing culturally responsive teaching practices in my other sciences courses, such as Human Anatomy & Physiology. Born and raised in Southern California, LaShyra “Lash” Nolen is a writer, activist, and third-year MD/MPP dual-degree student at Harvard Medical School and Kennedy School of Government, where she is serving as student council president of her medical school class, the first black woman documented to hold this leadership position. Her work has been featured in the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature, and Teen Vogue, among others. She is the Founding Executive Director of “We Got Us,” a grassroots community empowerment project with the goal of bringing vaccine education and access to marginalized communities in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. She is a co-host of the Clinical Problem Solvers Anti-Racism in Medicine Podcast. Her work has earned her the honor of being named a Boston Celtics “Hero Among Us” and named on the Forbes “30 Under 30” in healthcare list. She is a fervent advocate for social justice and enjoys storytelling through spoken word poetry, rap, and writing. And sometimes, life gets really messy even when you're in the company of your own tribe.  We've heard from some incredible people on how they've dealt with the blows and twists that life can throw our way. And now, we're back for Season 2, digging deeper to understand that feeling of otherness we often feel on the road to becoming ourselves, in all our complicated glory.  Join Zach Stafford as he explores the topics of discrimination, family and religion that Black and Latinx people often face. Through these conversations, we continue moving forward with a better understanding of our entire truths - no matter how complex they might be. We move onward to redefine what it means to be ourselves, creating space for others to follow. Listen to the first-hand accounts of people that have overcome extreme hardships, and yet remind us that no matter how difficult the journey, there's always hope, clarity and health on the other side.Support the show: https://www.steveharveyfm.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jon Alexander began his career in advertising, winning the prestigious Big Creative Idea of the Year, before making a dramatic change. Driven by a deep need to understand the impact on society of 3,000 commercial messages a day, he gathered three Masters degrees, exploring consumerism and its alternatives from every angle.   In 2014, he co-founded the New Citizenship Project with Irenie Ekkeshi to bring the resulting ideas into contact with reality. Since then, they have been on a mission to figure out how to use our skills - not just to sell stuff - to Consumers, and involve people in the decisions that affect their lives as Citizens.   In this engaging conversation, Jon shares some great insights from his latest book Citizens: Why the Key to Fixing Everything is All of Us. We also explore how we can move away from being a passive consumer to being an active agent, how collective power leads to exponential results, the responsibility we have to build our own systems, and what a Citizen democracy means for the government.   A full transcript of the episode can be found on our website: boundaryless.io/podcast/jon-alexander/   Key highlights We discussed: > Defining Citizenship > The Subject and Consumer stories versus the Citizen story > How leaders of organizations can help to empower people to be Citizens > Becoming active agents of change and investing in the future   To find out more about Jon's work: > Twitter: twitter.com/jonjalex > Website: www.jonalexander.net/ > New Citizenship Project: www.newcitizenship.org.uk/ > Jon Alexander, 'Citizens: Why the Key to Fixing Everything is All of Us', 2022: www.amazon.com/Citizens-Why-Key-…ing/dp/191245484X   Other references and mentions: > Ouishare Fest: www.ouishare.net/fest > Arlie Hochschild, The Deep Stories of Our Time: onbeing.org/programs/arlie-hoch…tories-of-our-time/ > Dark Matter Labs: rethinking organizing #BeyondTheRules - with Indy Johar and Annette Dhami: boundaryless.io/podcast/dark-matter-labs/ > Gov0 in Taiwan: g0v.asia/ > Rob Davies, Phasing out Russian oil: how UK consumers can help the war effort, 2022: www.theguardian.com/environment/202…-the-war-effort > Better Reykjavik: citizens.is/portfolio_page/better_reykjavik/ > The Liège Food Belt: communitiesforfuture.org/get-inspired…elt-belgium/ > Why Blockchain should be plural: Cosmos and Inter-Blockchain Communication - with Ethan Buchman: boundaryless.io/podcast/ethan-buchman/ > Rebecca Solnit, 'A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities That Arise in Disaster', 2010: www.amazon.com/Paradise-Built-He…es/dp/0143118072/   Find out more about the show and the research at Boundaryless at boundaryless.io/resources/podcast/ Thanks for the ad-hoc music to Liosound / Walter Mobilio. Growing up in the South, he lived the complexities of being Mexican American in a society that wanted him to choose one culture over the other. In this episode of “In the Deep: Stories that Shape Us,” we hear how John Paul rejects this idea and proves that identity is less tethered to borders and stigmas, and instead focuses on the premise that people should be free to be themselves. AFTER more than a century, the disappearance of steamship Waratah remains the greatest sea mystery of modern times. Apart from the period immediately following its disappearance, little effort has been expended in finding its final resting place. Add to that the fact that it disappeared in a storm of frightening proportions and you have what might be fairly assessed as a hopeless task. With no experience in the field, Emlyn Brown set about climbing this nautical mountain one step at a time and slowly built a dossier on Waratah and everything to do with her. His unrelenting course attracted the attention of famous authors, generous sponsors and even the odd self-seeking imposter. The book takes you through each of the expeditions mounted to find Waratah. From the first ‘low technology’ attempts to the final few, which employed the best technology on offer, he strived to lift the veil covering this enduring mystery. But more than that, it exposes the story behind the company which owned and built her and the decisions which may well have led to her fate. His brother Kendal, a writer and video producer, joined him on a number of his expeditions to chronicle events as they unfolded. He also assisted in the editing of the book.

It's all too easy to depend on the consistent narratives of bafflement at the political stranger. How could you possibly have voted for [fill in the blank]. I have no idea how you could support [you know who]. Maybe to stay baffled is a defense mechanism. It keeps the stranger strange. If you rely consistently on your inability to fathom another's behavior or reasons or motivations—or the fears that underlie them all—maybe that helps you cope a little better. Our guest on the show today turned off all her alarms, set aside the narrative of confusion, and set out to learn about the political other, when around 10 years ago, she began regular visits to Lake Charles, Louisiana, a working class Tea Party stronghold that followed suit with Trump support in 2016—suspicious of the government, struggling for their economic flourishing, feeling the whole time that they were being cut in line, that they were unseen, unrecognized, dishonored, alienated in a hidden social class war.Sociologist Arlie Hochschild is Professor Emerita in Sociology at the University of California Berkeley and author of Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right. In this episode, I ask Arlie about her experience of intentionally identifying her own ideological bubble, forging out to scale a wall of division, bafflement and hostility to find empathy, turning off her political and moral alarms and attuning her mind to hear the desires that inform the deep story of her friends in Louisiana. We discuss political division, resentment, and alienation; how the Trump presidency and subsequent 2020 loss to Biden has continued to make strangers in their own land; she explains the emotional roots of political beliefs and tribalism—especially those held by her conservative friends, the blind spots of progressive views of conservatives, and finally curiosity, humility, emotion management, and putting oneself in perspective. Arlie Hochschild is our guest today and she offers great insights into the role human emotion plays in our politics. She is a sociologist and seeks to understand people beyond the decisions they make or the words they say. She wrote a deeply impacting book called Strangers in Their Own Land which helped to bring understanding to the stories of anger and mourning of those on the American right. If you would like to read more by Arlie, there's a great article here and an interview here. She also wrote another book called The Managed Heart. Friedemann fragt zurück, was eigentlich "männlich" heißt. Könnte man Sexismus nennen. ENDE TEIL 1

Today's podcast is from a worship service live streamed on October 25, 2020. The sermon is delivered by Senior Minister Rev. Alan Taylor. Howard Thurman served as a mystic for the civil rights movements of the 50s and 60s. His teachings are as important today as then as he teaches that only by going inward can we effectively go outward. Pastor Otis Moss III says, “America wants to think of itself as the Jedis, but America too often is the Empire. If you want to be Jedis, you need your Yoda. For us, Thurman is our Yoda.” The theme for October is what it means to be a people of deep listening. To read about our theme-based ministry, please visit http://www.unitytemple.org/faith-development/soul-connections on our website.

After Arlie Hochschild published her book Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right, just before the 2016 election, it came to feel prescient. And the conversation Krista had with her in 2018 has now come to point straight to the heart of 2020 — a year in which many of us might say we feel like strangers in our own land and in our own world. Hochschild created a field within sociology looking at the social impact of emotion. She explains how our stories and truths — what we try to debate as issues in our social and political lives — are felt, not merely factual. And she shares why, as a matter of pragmatism, we have to take emotion seriously and do what feels unnatural: get curious and caring about the other side.Arlie Hochschild is professor emerita in the sociology department at the University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of ten books including The Managed Heart, The Second Shift, and Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right, a finalist for the National Book Award.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.This show originally aired in October, 2018.

“Everyone has a deep story,” says Arlie Hochschild. “Our job is to respect and try to understand these stories.”  Hochschild is one of the most distinguished sociologists of our time. Considered the founder of the “sociology of emotion,” she examines some of the most urgent challenges our societies face: work-family balance, shifting gender roles, alienation, globalization, and the ever-widening political divide. Throughout these issues, she studies how we feel about things, what we think we should feel, and why. Why do people choose what they choose? What are the invisible forces behind our actions? What are the emotional costs, if any? And most recently, why does it seem like people vote against their own interests?  In addition to being professor emerita of sociology at the University of California, Berkeley, she is the author of 10 paradigm-shifting books which include The Managed Heart, The Time Bind, The Second Shift, and most recently, a New York Times bestseller and finalist for the National Book Award, Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right. Hochschild was born in Boston, MA, to parents who served in the foreign service. She came of age in Israel, New Zealand, Ghana, and Tunisia, and also had the influence of her parents’ devout Unitarianism. This combination seemed to have sparked her inquisitive and empathic mind, which she playfully told in a semi-autobiographical children’s book, Colleen the Question Girl. Most of her adult life has been lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, in what she calls a “blue bubble.” So it’s no surprise that her latest questions concern the growing polarities in American politics, with a special focus on the rise of the American right.   In doing research for Strangers in Their Own Land, she immersed herself in southwest Louisiana, a Tea Party stronghold at the height of that movement. “I got very interested in something I call ‘the deep story,’” Hochschild says, “a way of thinking about emotion, stripped of facts and judgments, into an account of life that feels true, often best captured through metaphor.” She was determined to get out of her comfort zone and climb what she calls “an empathy wall,” to permit herself a great deal of curiosity about the experiences and viewpoints of people she knew she would have differences with. She observed their physical landscapes, religious influences, and social environments, and in the end, became friends with many of those she interviewed. “Caring,” she insists, “is not the same as capitulating. The relationships in Louisiana enlarged me as a human being.”  When she’s not busy writing about the layered and often tumultuous human dynamics that comprise the fabric of modern life, she can be found digging in her garden, hiking with her husband, the historian Adam Hochschild, or engaging in a creative project with their two granddaughters.   Please join us for a conversation with this visionary sociologist to help illuminate the deep stories of our times, the deep stories of ourselves.

In this week’s episode, The Sorry Not Sorry, Gorgo is joined again by Roger as they discuss Facebook and free speech, an episode of The Hidden Brain titled The Deep Story (more later), Trump’s infamous tweets, boring sex (yawn) and if you can truly be friends with an ex...along with other random tangents as they get off topic per usual.   The two go into a lengthy discussion about this new phenomenon the “oppression” of the white working class. This is spurred from haven recently listened to The Deep Story and that focused on one woman’s journey to get to know people who were fundamentally different in their beliefs, political affiliations and views of the world. While the two can understand the plight of the working class white, they tend to give no fucks….because...well...life.   LINKS: http://www.npr.org/2017/01/24/510567860/strangers-in-their-own-land-the-deep-story-of-trump-supporters   http://www.khou.com/news/education/spring-principal-under-fire-for-facebook-post/391645716

In the months since the presidential election, many have noted that lots of Americans live in bubbles — echo chambers filled with the voices of people who mostly agree with us. Sociologist Arlie Hochschild felt this long before the rise of Donald Trump, and five years ago she went on a mission to understand the other side. She left her own liberal bubble in Berkeley, California for a conservative one, deep in the Louisiana bayou.

We team up with Stephanie Lepp from the Reckonings podcast and talk to sociologist Arlie Hochschild about whether or not this election is causing more people than usual to change their minds about politics. We then hear from two voters who did in fact make some kind of transformation during this election season—one young voter who was voting in his second presidential election and one long-time voter and political insider who has been voting for 40 years.

I’ll be re-jiggering the podcast back end again, so expect some annoying weirdness (fireside.fm appears to be awesome, if expensive) So who’s buying Twitter? Tyler Cowe’s short term focus and going private escape hatch. VMware and AWS “VMware Cloud on AWS” “The service will be operated, sold and supported by VMware (not AWS) but integrate with the rest of AWS’ cloud portfolio (think storage, database, analytics and more).” https://medium.com/@cloud_opinion/aws-blinked–20cddbb537ed#.9cuvcp75o “these customers will go to Cloud, but its really a glorified co-lo.” “AWS should be encouraging customers to develop their workloads to take advantage of Cloud ( microservices, serverless etc ) and not delay it further.” InfoWorld piece: They keep talking about hybrid cloud, but what does that mean here? Just “we use multiple cloud types/providers,” or one application running across different clouds? “As part of the deal, VMware will be AWS’s preferred private cloud partner and Amazon will be VMware’s preferred partner in the public cloud.” Some MSP action: “One of the key differences between this deal and the one VMware announced with IBM in February is that this service is being offered and managed by VMware.” “Interested customers can request access to the service’s private beta starting Thursday, but VMware doesn’t expect the service to be live until early next year. General availability of VMware cloud on AWS will have to wait until even later in 2017.” Brief 451 note No data in DevOps Google Devices Roundup, and AI interlude Revisiting the Apple or Google ecosystem question. I hate having to think about ecosystems when buying electronics. And AI. Walt Mossberg Thinks Siri is Dumb Wired Interview with Obama - dude knows AI. BONUS LINKS, not covered in podcast Container Madness! Nothing much new, just content to riff on Microsoft shipping Commercially Supported (CS) Docker Engine Red Hat and containers - relabel, transitioned from originally a PaaS to CaaS. DockerCon coming to Austin Opentracing joins the Cloud Native Computing Foundation Announcement Open tracing Luke transitions to new Puppet CEO Luke’s announcement in Twitter Luke is one of the main people who started all this stuff, based on annoyance of BladeLogic, cfengine, etc. Did I ever tell the one of how I did a terrible sales job getting Reductive Labs signed up with RedMonk? The new dude looks like the real deal of enterprise infrastructure. Recommendations Matt: Warren Ellis’ Normal - From his latest newsletter “What science fiction, as a field, is good for, is looking at ten thousand possibilities at once," Zapp Branigan reading Trump quotes Brandon: Slate Plus. Also, Harry’s Blades. Coté: iPhone 7 Plus. Live Photos, Rotate mode, Bokeh stuff actually in beta, Home button takes getting used to, Two speakers is better?
