Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives.  In this episode, we feature the next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series. It's Chuck's chat with Larry Knechtel, the Wrecking Crew keyboard player and bassist who—along with Brian Wilson & The Beach Boys—has worked with Simon & Garfunkel, Duane Eddy, The Mamas & The Papas, The Monkees, The Doors, The Byrds, The Grass Roots, Elvis Presley, Jerry Garcia, and Billy Joel. He also was a key member of the band Bread. Larry passed away a few years later in 2009, which makes this posthumously released “Chuck Chat” yet another priceless buried treasure.   Here are just a few of the many things that Larry discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast: What he ascertained early on as a studio musician's average career length, which then led to a healthy fear of his phone no longer ringing; His legendary work on Simon & Garfunkel's “Bridge Over Troubled Water”; Besides Brian, the only Beach Boy he says his fellow studio musicians ever saw in the studio along with them; The curse of having perfect pitch; And his friendship with Jim Gordon…not to mention the fate of the 50+ hours of jam tapes that he recorded with him, which included spoken ruminations on what was bugging Jim at the time.  There'll be a short sneak peak running publicly for free, but the entirety of this podcast will only be accessible on the Major Tier of Discograffiti's Patreon. Peter Guralnick, an author I've long admired, wrote the definitive Elvis Presley biographies Last Train to Memphis and Careless Love and has returned with The Colonel and the King. Drawing on fresh research and volumes of previously unseen letters, the author casts new light on Colonel Tom Parker, an identity-changing Dutch immigrant who became Presley's manager for life. Guranick's complex portrait of Colonel (not “the Colonel”) will surprise anyone who thinks of him as an all-controlling ripoff artist. Here, Guralnick discusses his own relationship with Parker and bats around questions such as how Colonel's constant deal-making affected Elvis's artistry. Was Colonel exploiting his client or doing what he had to do to keep the free-spending singer afloat? What roles did each of their addictions play in their professional relationship? Guralnick's expertise and enthusiasm on these topics is unrivaled. (Photo by Mike Leahy)

Olivia's up first, prompted by the book, to look at the history behind "Softly" - originally an Italian ballad titled "Piano" and she unpacks how it made its way from Italian singer Mina to English singer Matt Monro and then across the Atlantic. And how exactly did Elvis Presley land on his unique interpretation with an added tragic narrative layer? Then the duo tackle Justin's Song of the Week, the long-awaited "Don't Be Cruel," exploring the history behind songwriter Otis Blackwell's inspirations, how "Don't Be Cruel" fits into the wider story of both country and rhythm & blues that was manifesting as what we now know as rock and roll in the mid-1950s, what appealed to Elvis about Otis's demo, what makes "Don't Be Cruel" potentially Justin's favorite Elvis song... and why the single of Hound Dog and Don't Be Cruel is the perfect 1950s rock and roll single.

It stars Austin Bulter as Elvis Presley and Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker. Told from the Colonel's point of view it tells the story of Elvis' rise to fame and peak celebrity status. Filmed in true Baz vision Elvis is loud, gaudy and chaotic version of Elvis' early days and cult icon status. Interesting for a biopic it doesn't feature any original Elvis recordings. Despite not winning the best actor Oscar, Austin Butler gives an impressive performance as Elvis. Scores for Elvis were mixed, recommendability depends on your interest and enthusiasm for Elvis and the divisive Baz Luhrmann aesthetic, clocking in at two hours and 39 minutes it didn't score high for repeat viewing either. First, we wrestle with Britain's latest flirtation with national ID cards — a grand plan that looks less like efficiency and more like Big Brother with a clipboard. Why should the average bloke need a barcode to buy a sandwich, when freedom is supposed to be stitched into the fabric of the nation? Then, across the Atlantic, we dip into the bizarre saga of Graceland. Fraudsters tried to swipe Elvis Presley's home with forged paperwork. Yes, really. The King's estate nearly went under the hammer, but the con unraveled faster than a karaoke wig. Lies may glitter for a moment, but truth eventually smashes through like a drum solo. Finally, we dust off the archaeology desk — scientists claim a million-year-old skull has been found, nudging human evolution further back in time. Headlines shout about ancestors with funny foreheads, but the real point is this: theories change, God's truth doesn't. Humanity is still created in His image, whether the skulls are dated one hundred years or a million. Mark has a poem, Pete brings the Bible, and together we serve up perspective with punch.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/mark-and-pete--1245374/support.

P. Blavatsky, and Manly P. Hall• Examines Elvis's efforts as a natural healer, the significance of his UFO encounters, and his telekinetic, psychic, and astral traveling abilitiesElvis Presley, the most successful solo artist in history and an emblematic cultural figure of the Western world, has been widely perceived as a conservative Southern Christian. However, the truth about the man has been missed.Writer and researcher Miguel Conner reveals how Elvis was a profound mystic, occultist, and shaman. Beginning with the unusual circumstances of his birth—and his stillborn twin brother—Conner traces the diverse thread of mysticism that runs through Elvis Presley's life, drawing on firsthand accounts from the people closest to him, including his wife, Priscilla, the Memphis Mafia, and his spiritual advisors. He shows how Elvis studied seminal 19th- and 20th-century occultists, including H. P. Blavatsky, Manly P. Hall, G. I. Gurdjieff, and P. D. Ouspensky, and was a devotee of Indian yogi Paramahansa Yogananda. Conner argues that Elvis was well-versed in the esoteric practices of sex magic, meditation, astrology, and numerology and had a deep familiarity with Kabbalah, Gnosticism, Theosophy, and Eastern traditions. He also reveals how Elvis was a natural healer, telekinetic, psychic, and astral traveler who had significant mystical experiences and UFO encounters.Looking at the conspiratorial and paranormal aspects of Elvis's life, the author explores the "Elvis visitations" that have occurred since the King's death and the general high weirdness of his life. Adrian Sherwood is known for his work as a producer, and while that term brings to mind those who simply put their often-subtle imprint on the recordings in which they’re involved, Sherwood’s approach is distinctive and heavily informed by the Dub music which he worked to distribute and to play as a DJ in London in the 1970’s. He has brought that sensibility primarily, but not exclusively, to electronic and electronic dance music, as well as many remixes of work by bands ranging from Depeche Mode, Sinead O’Connor, Primal Scream, Coldcut, and Skinny Puppy. His most recent solo record is 2025’s The Collapse of Everything. Sherwood will perform at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, TN in March of 2026. In this episode, he talks about how songs by Lee Perry, Mark Stewart, and Elvis Presley guided his musical development.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, we ask one of the greatest music writers of the rock and roll era to talk about Mystery Train as he celebrates its 50th anniversary with a brand-new edition of his classic book. Talking to us from Oakland, 6,000 miles away in his native Northern California, Greil Marcus looks back on the pivotal moments that led to his starting work on Mystery Train in the fall of 1972: his experiences as a student at Berkeley, his discovery of film critic Pauline Kael and his early writing for Rolling Stone. From there we focus on the book's extraordinary chapters about Sly Stone and Elvis Presley before relating its overarching theme – America as an "invented nation" – to the Trump administration's assault on the diversity that produced so much great art from Walt Whitman and Herman Melville to Robert Johnson and Randy Newman. A somewhat abrupt switch takes us over to our side of the pond and our guest's second book: the vast "secret history of the 20th Century" that was 1989's Lipstick Traces, along with the 1993 collection of his punk writings entitled In the Fascist Bathroom. Clips from Paul Moody's 2018 audio interview with Jamie Reid – the subversive graphic designer who became Malcolm McLaren's principal partner in iconographic crime – prompt Greil's reflections on what made (the) Sex Pistols such a vital sea-change in the subculture of rock and roll.  Many thanks to special guest Greil Marcus. The 50th anniversary edition of Mystery Train is published by Faber and available now. Pieces discussed: Greil Marcus, Greil Marcus: A Life In Writing, The Band: We Can Talk About It Now, Jamie Reid audio, The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Parlophone), Ray Davies: A Study In Frustration, The Pet Shop Boys: Hip, Clever and Pop and The Black Keys Acknowledge Their Muses on Delta Kream.

Two witnesses who were at the memorial joined the show, Rusty Humphries and Lydia Fisher, to give us their account. There are other locations with ghost stories too, one which also has a connection to Elvis Presley and his film "Follow That Dream."
