Mikä merkitys on elinympäristöllä onnistuneen muutoksen tekemisessä? How do the best performers in the world do decisions and guide their attention? How could an ice hockey player prepare to maximise their changes to score in a game? How about Formula-1 and other car racing, what are key things to pay attention to in cornering, race start and overtaking situations? Should you focus more on the opponents or on yourself? What is “too much focus” and what is too little? How to engage more with your instincts and shut down the ruminating brain? What does imagery training have to do with this? What is quiet eye technique? Why lack of neck strength might limit your attentional resources in elite motor racing? How do you develop such expertise that you are able to perform at so high level under so many obstacles and pressures as Sebastian Vettel did in the 2012 Brazil GP? Sebastian was leading the championship 13 points ahead of Alonso before the race. In the first lap, Sebastian collided with Bruno Senna and spun, whilst Alonso made his way up in the pack, looking like the title favourite then at the wet conditions. Sebastian seemed to do all the right things after the disastrous start. How is this possible? How is one able to "do the right thing" in chaotic and complex situations? Why deliberate experience is better for developing expertise than deliberate practice? In this episode I got the chance to talk with a long-standing colleague, great coach and academic, Dr. Neil Buchanan. We discussed most of the time about expertise - what it is and how to develop it, and brought about some practical examples from the corporate and sport world - including Sebastians´ race in 2012. For a more detailed record of what happened in that race, please listen to the man himself in this podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Li5ahzPxMmIDr. Neil Buchanan did his PhD in expertise and talent development. He is currently director for the performance psychology programme at University of Edinburgh. Neil also works as a performance coach for Hintsa Performance and has his own consultancy Overmind. Neil is a family man with wife and a daughter, who enjoys hill walks in beautiful Scotland. The specific topics we covered include narratives and their roles in our lives & expertise, routine expertise vs. adaptive expertise, psychological flexibility, fusing and defusing with thoughts and emotions, naturalistic decision making and more. Welcome to Kinsei-Do Corner. I'm your host, Jo, and on this show I sit down with athletes, coaches and fitness enthusiasts from Jakarta and beyond, and we talk about all things health and fitness. On today's episode I had the pleasure of catching up with my old friend, former room mate and client, Gio, to talk about the Performance Coaching journey we took together in early 2022, and how this has positively impacted and continues to impact his life ever since. I essentially became a Performance Coach - as opposed to “just” an online trainer - via the certification program from one of the leading coaching companies in the world, Hintsa Performance, and one key part of this very rigorous program was working through Hintsa's entire Circle of Better Life coaching methodology with a real practical client for 5 months. Gio was this client, and through the work we did together, I became a better coach, and Gio - as you will learn in this episode - developed and refined the systems, habits and routines that allow him to lead his best life. So, if you ever wondered how coaching works, what a coach does and whether you too could benefit from working with one, you'll find all the answers in this fantastic conversation with Gio!

Alongside his career in medicine and research, Dr. Wood invested time in developing easily-accessible methods with which to track human health, performance, and longevity. He has published extensively and spoken on multiple topics surrounding functional and ancestral approaches to health, including examining the root causes of multiple sclerosis and insulin resistance. He also is interested in using his experiences in coaching and competing in rowing, CrossFit, powerlifting, and ultra-endurance racing to inform Tommy's day-to-day interaction with clients looking to achieve long-term health and performance. Our today's conversation circles all around brain health. The episode starts by laying the foundation for what has to be taken into careful consideration when it comes to figuring out the balance between a flat-out obsessively stressful approach on the one extreme end and a don't-care-about-anything-do-whatever-feels-good mentality on the other hand whenever thinking about any specific lifestyle intervention. Keeping that in mind, the main part circled mostly around the complicated question surrounding easily implementable steps for virtually everyone that are effective at preventing rapid cognitive decline especially in later stages in life. Certainly one of the most practically useful and informative episodes so far and I really appreciate Dr. Tommy Wood for agreeing to talk to me today! Not one to shy away from controversy, Dr. Tommy Wood has worked with some of the highest performing athletes in the world. From Formula One to Ironmans, what are some of the key takeaways Tommy had on behavior change from that experience? You would be surprised at how little free time these people have. I also get the chance to pick Tommy's brain on the problems with nutritional epidemiology, genetics, and how to evaluate nascent supplements and compounds where little research may exist. Who is Tommy Wood? Tommy Wood is a Research Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the University of Washington Division of Neonatology. The majority of his academic work has focused on developing therapies for brain injury in newborn infants, but also includes adult neurodegenerative and metabolic diseases, as well as nutritional approaches to sports performance.Tommy received an undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of Cambridge before obtaining his medical degree from the University of Oxford. After working as a doctor in central London, he moved to Norway for his PhD work, and then to the University of Washington as a postdoc. Alongside his academic training, Tommy has coached athletes in a dozen sports, from weekend warriors to Olympians and world champions. He is the outgoing President of the Physicians for Ancestral Health society, a director of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine, and sits on the scientific advisory board of Hintsa Performance, which includes researching performance optimization strategies for F1 drivers.Tommy’s current research interests include the physiological and metabolic responses to brain injury and their long-term effects on brain health, as well as developing easily-accessible methods with which to track human health, performance, and longevity. My guest today is Dr. Tommy Wood.  I’m so glad to have him on, and I know you are going to love this episode!  Tommy has the ability to make the complex sound simple, and his depth of knowledge on a wide range of topics is amazing. Dr. Wood is a research faculty at the University of Washington (UW) in the Department of Pediatrics.  His work focuses on ways to increase resilience of, and treat injury of, the developing brain.  This may not seem relevant but his knowledge of brain injuries provides some interesting comments on what we can all do if we bang our head falling from our bikes.  With a Bachelor's Degree in biochemistry from the University of Cambridge, a medical degree from the University of Oxford, and a PhD in physiology and neuroscience from the University of Oslo, he has a more than credible background.  He also serves as President of Physicians for Ancestral Health, and is on the scientific advisory board of Hintsa Performance.  Of more relevance to the conversation is that Dr. Wood has invested much time in developing easily-accessible methods with which to track human health, performance, and longevity. He has published and spoken on multiple topics surrounding functional and ancestral approaches to health, including examining the root causes of multiple sclerosis and insulin resistance.  He uses his experiences in coaching and competing in rowing, CrossFit, powerlifting, and ultra-endurance racing to inform his day-to-day interaction with clients looking to achieve long-term health and performance. I had so many questions for Dr. Wood that we spoke for quite a long time but you won’t notice the minutes tick by as we discuss: How to balance winter training goals of improving fitness while still maintaining an immune system resilient enough to withstand coronavirus Why a keto diet might work for endurance athletes, as long as you are patient Polarised training - a good choice for longevity Tommy’s "If it’s working for you, how can I argue with that?” philosophy to training and nutrition Nose breathing and why it’s the easiest way to make sure you keep your training intensity low Advice on getting better sleep (TIP: it’s what you’ve heard before but it never harms to have good advice independently confirmed) Lifestyle medicine advice on how to die young as old as possible How Omega 3 fats and creatine supplementation might help if you have a bike crash and hit your head Tommy has such a depth of varied knowledge, I’m pretty certain you would like to follow him.  Here are the best places: Website - https://www.drragnar.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/drtommywood/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/drragnar “Metabolic health and lifestyle medicine should be a cornerstone of future pandemic preparedness” Tommy mentions Dr. Terry Wahls when we were chatting abut how he helped his step-brother with MS - You can read more about Dr. Wahls HERE and also find out more about her book The Wahls Protocol: A radical New way to treat all auto-immune conditions If you have suffered with a head injury then Tommy mentioned a book which you might be interested in, “How to feed a brain” by Cavin Balaster If you are interested in using creatine as a supplement then the best source is Creapure.  To check the integrity of all supplements then go to Informed Sport if you are in the UK and NSFsport if you are in the USA We talked about the benefit of sun light or bright light. My guest in this episode of the podcast “Leadership is the Competitive Advantage” is Annastiina Hintsa, CEO of Hintsa Performance. Hintsa Performance is a world-renowned coaching company that has helped ambitious people achieve sustainable high performance for over 20 years now. The holistic Hintsa coaching method has been used by Fortune 500 executives and world-class athletes like F1 Champions Fernando Alonso and Mika Häkkinen. Annastiina has lately taken over Hintsa Performance from his father, the founder Dr Aki Hintsa. After working in top management consulting firm and experiencing firsthand a burnout, she was faced with profound questions about balance and meaning in life as well as how to achieve sustainable high performance. We will, among other topics, have a chance to glimpse into Annastiina’s inspirational personal journey as it conveys a clear message that the way to improve performance and find fulfillment is through better health and wellbeing. I am really glad that Annastiina will join us at the Estonian Human Resource Management Association's annual conference this November as one of the keynote speakers. “My personal mission is to help people live a life of meaning and consequently achieve sustainable high performance. We also help organizations to create optimal conditions for those individuals to succeed. That is what we are all about. That is what I am all about as well. It is important to understand that my father’s main thesis was that success is a byproduct of a holistic health and wellbeing. Our wellbeing is actually the foundation for sustainable performance. In other words – living a better life is what leads to a better performance. While working in Ethiopia, it was the Ethiopian running legend Haile Gebrselassie who inspired my father to study what made Haile one of the best distance runners in the history. Haile’s life was integrated with all elements in his environment geared towards supporting his goals and running ambitions. It became clear that optimal performance derives from a healthy, balanced life. Taking care of your wellbeing allows you to function at your full potential. This inspired my father to develop the so-called circle of better life. He drew a circle and on the outer layer he placed the following six elements: physical activity, nutrition, recovery, biomechanics, mental energy and general health. The middle of the circle he called the core – it represents your identity, goals, and the sense of control. That is why we here at Hinsa Performance always ask about your identity. Do you know who you are? About your purpose. Do you know what you want? And finally are you in control of your life? It is through the process of exploring those themes that we build the different blocks that actually matter to you the most as well as help you keep a balance in knowing your identity and core motivations. And it is unbelievable how little we pay attention to the core and take time to think about these crucial questions.” – Annastiina Hintsa Listen and enjoy!

In this episode, we discuss scientific literacy and how a non-practitioner or specialist (your average fitness buff, in other words) can become more comfortable reading primary literature and ask better questions towards improving your health and performance. We also talk about how normative average values around blood chemistry can be misleading to athletes. Tommy also talks about his overall mission in the field of sports science, namely: “How can I make your brain and your body as healthy as possible for your entire lifespan? Pretty much everything that I’m a proponent of when it comes to long-term health and performance is maximizing your biochemical, physiological, physical reserve: What’s the difference between what you have to be able to do every day, and what you’re physically capable of? The bigger that reserve, the better everything is.” Listen in as Tommy shares the value of having a journal club or a “challenge network”, why standards for athletic performance are regressing down to the lowest common denominator, and why most athletes should be taking creatine.
