Revisiting Empirical Solar Energetic Particle Scaling Relations I Solar flares by Athanasios Papaioannou et al. on Tuesday 29 November Aims The possible influence of solar superflares on the near-Earth space radiation environment are assessed through the investigation of scaling laws between the peak proton flux and fluence of Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events with the solar flare soft X-ray peak photon flux. Methods We compiled a catalog of 65 well-connected (W20-90) SEP events during the last three solar cycles covering a period of $sim$34 years (1984-2020) that were associated with flares of class $geq$C6.0 and investigated the statistical relations between the recorded peak proton fluxes ($I_{P}$) and the fluences ($F_{P}$) at a set of integral energies from E $>$10; $>$30; $>$60; to $>$100 MeV versus the associated solar flare peak soft X-ray flux in the 1$-$8 A band ($F_{SXR}$). Based on the inferred relations, we calculate the integrated energy dependence of the peak proton flux ($I_{P}$) and fluence ($F_{P}$) of the SEP events, assuming that they follow an inverse power-law with respect to energy. Finally, we make use of simple physical assumptions, combining our derived scaling laws, and estimate the upper limits for $I_{P}$ and $F_{P}$ focusing on the flare associated with the strongest GLE yet directly observed (GLE 05 on 23 February 1956), and that inferred for the cosmogenic radionuclide based SEP event of AD774/775. Results We show that $I_{P}$ and $F_{P}$ scale with the solar flare SXR flux as $propto$~$F_{SXR}^{5/6}$. For the AD774/775 event (with a re-scaled upper limit $F_{SXR}$ = X600) these scaling laws yield values of $F_{P}$ at E$>$200 MeV of $sim$10$^{10}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $sim$1.5 $times$ 10$^{9}$ cm$^{-2}$ at E$>$430 MeV that are consistent with values inferred from the measurements of $^{14}$C and $^{10}$Be. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.15312v1

When it comes to debates on gender equality, one of the most common arguments you'll hear is – men have it all, women have less, and what women do have, they've had to fight for. But if you look at the data, girls do better than boys in school, are less burdened by illness and addiction, and commit suicide in far fewer numbers. Is the gap between the genders really as punishing as many claim? To discuss this, Oksana is joined by Gulden Turktan, founding chair of the W20. This interview was filmed at the Eurasian Women's Forum in St. Petersburg.
What You Will Learn: How Molly started D2DInc and became involved with the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) shortly after to seek support and education What pain points D2DInc experienced at the seven-figure mark, and how they made a wildly successful business pivot out of consulting and into government contracts How the business pivot from consulting to contracts took time to implement but made a dramatic difference in the company's growth How the organization prioritized roles when they needed to recruit and hire new team members, and how they have worked to unify their team and its diverse roles What suggestions Molly has for any organization interested in making a business pivot into government purchasing contracts How Molly learned to delegate and begin working on the business rather than in it as the team grew from 8-10 people to over 80 How D2DInc's period of rapid growth caused the company's leadership to be stuck in a reactive mode, and how stabilizing the team allowed them to become more strategic How Molly and her team have developed a strategic meeting cadence that has helped them look ahead and be more intentional How NAWBO has launched a group called the NAWBO Circle specifically for the 3% of women-owned businesses that make more than $1 million in revenue About Molly Gimmel Molly K. La enóloga, emprendedora, ex diputada y Presidenta del W20 Argentina Susana Balbo participó del ciclo Conversaciones en LA NACION y habló de la cumbre que reunirá a los mandatarios más importantes del mundo y al rol de la mujer en las empresas.

Alistair Burt MP is Minister of State for the Middle East at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. In a recent speech at Chatham House he launched a new report from the government's Stabilisation Unit on new approaches to resolving armed conflicts. Drawing on examples from conflicts as diverse as Libya and Colombia, the report explores how deal making and peace building can reduce conflicts around the world. Agnes spoke with Alistair after the speech to find out more. Despite the success and acclaim garnered by movements such as Time's Up and #MeToo, women's access to the global economy is still a major issue. From gender pay gaps to the lack of affordable childcare, in the majority of countries women are still greatly disadvantaged. The Gender and Growth Initiative at Chatham House seeks to develop policies for combatting these problems. In their first joint interview Agnes and Ben caught up with Stephane Dubois and Roxanne Bildan to discuss how the initiative is working with the G20 to drive change in this area. The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel about the US after a right-wing coup has installed a theocratic regime, is now a ten-part series on Hulu. The TV version is shocking, scary, and surprisingly relevant in Trump’s America. In this interview, she recalls how and why she wrote the book—in 1984—and what in the TV version seems most resonant today. Also: Katha Pollit says “It’s not ‘McCarthyism’ to demand answers on Trump, Russia, and the election.” And, for our Ivanka Watch segment, Amy Wilentz comments on Ivanka’s debut on the world stage with her first official foreign trip—to the W20 in Germany, where she was booed.
