So let us talk about that impotent contemporary ritual called the “land acknowledgment.” Nowadays when an event or activity is going to be taking place somewhere, or an institution is opening, the proceedings will often begin with a land acknowledgment. This is a little empty gesture recognizing the indigenous people who used to live there. Along with the implication that nothing will be done about it.For more from Doug, subscribe to Canon+: https://canonplus.com/
Hi. For our third and final Background Information Episode, Ty and Aidan, the hosts of Fun Factor, join us for an hour to flip through magazine reviews of Skies of Arcadia! All four of us are capping out RPG visuals at 8/10, receiving Golden Man location information, misunderstanding Duke Nukem's wants and needs, running the triple negative olympics, borrowing ideas from Final Fantasy, gibbering like mad fools, doing british accents, lamenting 128 bits, harkening back to early days, forecasting typos signaling prestige, disenchanting sourpusses, teetering on magnificence, creating Scott Steiner, and wondering if Nintendo Power was on the take. The remainder of the episode features your normal hosts hacking out random battles, cameoing in other games, teasing a modern release, learning some optimization tricks, sharing memories, laying out expectations, counting stuff, and wondering if Nintendo Power was on the take. Skies of Arcadia was easily the best RPG in the year 2000 for Dreamcast. Growing up this week's money diarist remembers boiling water on the stove for baths because the gas had been disconnected, landlords turning up at the front door looking for unpaid rent, and feeling like she never quite fit in because everyone else seemed to have things her family couldn't afford. Determined to create a different life for herself, she worked hard, saved aggressively, finished university and built what she thought was her dream future with her long-term partner. Then, two months before their wedding, she received a message request from his ex-girlfriend. The kind that starts with: "I know you're about to get married, but..." What happened next changed the entire course of her life. We talk about calling off a wedding, navigating a breakup during COVID, buying a home on her own at 28, becoming a mum sooner than expected, and the money lessons that finally clicked after discovering the She's on the Money community. This conversation is about resilience, second chances, and learning that sometimes the life falling apart is actually making room for something much better. By the end of this episode, you'll be very glad she never made it down that aisle. New here? Say it with me: equal isn’t always equitable. On Friday Drinks, Jess and Bec cover a very juicy DM concerning inheritances, where one sister has received a lifetime of financial support, while the other is fighting for what she believes is her fair share of the will. Is it considered equal for the more independent child to get a larger share in the end or is there more to it than that? This episode is also packed with insights for the side hustlers and how they might allocate their earnings. Do you split it into particular percentages (e.g. bills, investments, play) or is it all simply ‘fun money’? Tune in for Broke Tips, Money Wins, how you might split your pizza and the beginnings of Bec’s merch line(!?). KICKING OFF A SIDE HUSTLE? Check out our playlists to help you get started. In this first part of a special two-episode series of TOGA's Conversations in Lung Cancer Research podcast, A/Prof Deme Karikios, a Medical Oncologist at the Nepean Hospital in NSW, is joined by Prof Ken O'Byrne, a Consultant and Professor in Medical Oncology at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Queensland University of Technology, and A/Prof Rachel Roberts-Thomson, a Medical Oncologist at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Cancer Care Adelaide. The panel discusses the recent, groundbreaking broad PBS listing of certain immunotherapy agents in Australia, including the removal of 'once in a life time' rule. This major structural shift moves oncology prescribing away from rigid, indication-specific silos and toward clinician discretion guided by a patient's individual biology and the best available clinical evidence. This episode also covers what this means for advanced and metastatic thoracic malignancies, the biological rationale behind single versus doublet immunotherapy, and the practicalities of managing these clinical decisions. She's 25, owns her home, has paid off her HECS debt, has more than $50,000 in super, is building an investment portfolio and somehow still rated herself a B- when I asked how she felt about her money habits. Growing up in regional Victoria, she got her first job at 14 and never really slowed down. While most of us were spending our weekends hanging out with friends, she was working supermarket shifts, saving for her future and helping her parents renovate investment properties. That work ethic followed her everywhere. Through nursing placements, night shifts, university, a mortgage in her early 20s and a long-distance relationship that somehow survived Melbourne lockdowns. Now she's built a life that's incredibly solid, but what I loved most about this conversation wasn't the numbers. It was her mindset. The way she talks about money feels refreshingly simple. Work hard. Save consistently. Make your money work for you. Repeat. We chat about buying a home at 21, paying off her HECS debt, starting her investing journey, the money lessons she learnt from her parents and grandparents, and why she's already thinking about the financial life she wants to build long before she starts a family. Honestly, this episode is proof that wealth isn't always built through big dramatic decisions. Sometimes it's built one supermarket shift, one mortgage repayment and one very stubborn financial goal at a time. New here? This week's Money Diary feels a little bit like proof that where you start doesn't have to determine where you end up. She grew up in a tiny village in Eastern Europe in the aftermath of communism, where family holidays weren't a thing, money was scarce, and the future often looked a lot like the past. But even as a kid, she couldn't stop wondering what was on the other side of the horizon. At 16, she won a scholarship that changed everything. A few years later, she arrived in Australia with just $20 to her name, planning to stay for 12 months before heading back to university in the UK. Instead, she met the man who would become her husband after he quite literally washed up next to her on a beach. Eighteen years later, they're raising two children on the Gold Coast, have turned a modest beach shack into a property worth around $1.7 million, and she's built a dog-sitting side hustle that's on track to bring in $40,000 this year alongside her part-time career. But what I loved most about this conversation wasn't the property story or even the side hustle. It was the way she thinks about money. From collecting bottles to teach her kids about saving, to creating flexibility around family life, to constantly finding creative ways to make money work harder, she's built a life that looks completely different to the one she grew up expecting. Your bestie just asked you to be their bridesmaid, which has you wondering: will you (or your friendship) ever financially recover from this? Happy Friday Drinks to all who celebrate. In this week’s episode, Victoria and Jess cover the costs of being a bridesmaid in a distressed (but very relatable) DM. With nuptials on the menu, they also respond to a Money Dilemma which asks which money chats should we be having before getting engaged? Before linking your life (and your finances) with your lover, what money stories, habits and convos need to be tabled and how do you have these chats when love and money are often at odds with each other? As always, the gang will be bringing you Money Wins of the week, plus Broke Tips for making your budget that much happier come payday.
Skincare, makeup, and beauty treatments. When did they first pop up on our spending radar and why? This week’s Deep Dive gets a little… deep. Bec and Jess discuss the cost of beauty standards: who sets them, sustains them, and how we might look at the whole topic with a raised (and sometimes fluffed) eyebrow. Because, whether you overtly subscribe to them or not, beauty standards don’t just affect folks who love a trend, they have the tendency to impact our spending habits and perceptions of value, and even our self worth. And it’s not just women either, just consider the whole looksmaxxing thing. Between the double standards, unrealistic expectations, and self-expression of it all, how have our perceptions around beauty shifted and what are we really buying into? From body hair to full-coverage foundation and the rituals of getting ready, tune in if you’ve ever wondered what we really think about the price of pretty, how we’re feeling about ‘preventative’ measures, and which standards we’re willing to bin at our next earliest convenience. Should we share what our community actually spends on beauty products? Let us know in the comments. This week's Money Diary is proof that earning more money doesn't automatically make you feel secure. Growing up, she was constantly worried about money. Not because her family was struggling, but because she'd picked up on snippets of conversations and quietly convinced herself there was never enough. So she did what a lot of us do. She worked hard. Really hard. She got her first job at 14, worked multiple jobs through uni, saved obsessively and thought financial security would come from earning more. But after graduating and looking closely at her spending for the first time, she realised something surprising: the problem wasn't how much she earned. It was how little attention she was paying to where it was going. Fast forward to today and she's investing in ETFs, saving around $2,000 a week, planning to buy her first property, and building wealth with far more confidence than she ever thought possible. This conversation is about scarcity mindset, the stories we inherit about money, and what happens when you finally stop being scared of it. They’re in the same role as you, have less experience and are somehow being paid more? A whopping $25k more. So, are you being underpaid or simply not asking for what you’re really worth? On this week’s Friday Drinks, we’re covering career-coded Money Dilemmas. One person asks whether it’s ever worth it to stay in a job you love, even if it means taking longer to reach your money goals. And someone’s being underpaid! Or are they? With a less-experienced colleague being paid more for the same role, this community member asks whether they’ve missed their moment to ask for a raise – or if they’re simply being underpaid by a whole $25k. From knowing your worth to knowing your values, this episode is nothing to sniff at. A big thankyou to the team at eBay for sponsoring this episode! So you can be overinsured and you can be underinsured, but can you ever just be insured enough in your super? ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ jokes aside, we yapped about insurance with friend of the pod Phil Thompson from Skye Wealth. Join us on the Deep Dive couch as we unpack a couple of case studies to demonstrate what it might look like to be overinsured, plus how an underinsured person might get sufficient cover, followed by a quickfire round of questions from our She’s on the Money community. Tune in if you’ve ever wondered: what percentage of your income should be spent on insurance, if the coverage in your superannuation is enough to see you through, or if you’ll still be covered with ADHD. A little heads up before you press play: this episode contains conversations about financial abuse and coercive control. It’s an incredibly important conversation, but please look after yourself while listening. This week’s Money Diary is raw in a way I don’t think I was fully prepared for. At 21, she fell in love with an older man and slowly built a life around him. Over time, she gave up uni, stopped working, helped raise his children, and handed over control of her finances without really realising how much of herself she was losing in the process. What started as “he’s just better with money” slowly became something much darker. By the end of the relationship, she was working unpaid for his business, questioning her own worth constantly, and living in a situation so controlling that she had her own fridge in the garage because she’d been made to feel like a burden. And still… she didn’t call it financial abuse at the time. After 14 years, one moment finally pushed her to leave. She packed up her dog, moved back in with her parents, got a new job, started learning about money for herself, and began rebuilding from scratch. Now she has a growing investment portfolio, a $50k house deposit, and something even bigger than that: independence. This conversation is heartbreaking, hopeful and honestly incredibly important. Because financial abuse rarely starts with one giant red flag. Most of the time, it happens slowly… until one day you realise you don’t recognise yourself anymore. TL;DR Today, based on our multi-year prioritization research, we launch the Rethink Priorities Cross-Cause Fund (CCF). The fund pools donors' contributions and allocates them to high-impact giving funds across Global Health and Development, Animal Welfare, and Global Catastrophic Risks. Key highlights from this post: We believe that strategic cross-cause prioritization is an important step in doing good at scale. This fund is for donors who want their donation to go where a marginal dollar is likely to do the most good across cause areas, all things considered. We modeled key uncertainties that matter for cross-cause prioritization: moral weights, time discounting, risk attitudes, aggregation across ethical views, AI-related uncertainty, and empirical uncertainty within each giving opportunity. We present the current recommended allocation of marginal resources across high-impact funds in each of the three cause areas mentioned above. In addition, we're introducing you to the first version of the Donor Compass, a tool to help donors explore cross-cause giving, powered by our cross-cause prioritization model. It is a short quiz that outputs custom giving allocations based on the user's moral and empirical assumptions. This week on Friday Drinks, we discuss a Money Dilemma that questions whether we can ever really afford to miss health-related appointments when we’re in debt. Spoiler: ETFs aren’t that deep. So why are so many of us (okay, you) still so intimidated by them when it comes to investing? On this week’s Deep Dive, Bec and Victoria cover the acronym that’s causing a stir in our comments section. Exchange Traded Funds or ETFs are just one of the ways that many Aussies are investing, and for good reason too. They’re a bundle of shares that give you some healthy exposure to a range of companies, industries and asset classes that you mightn't have otherwise. In this episode, we’ll cover what ETFs are, how they work, and why they’re such a compelling investment option. Thanks to our episode partners Sharesies, we’ll show you how to get started on their platform, as well as which ETFs have risen in popularity in recent times (and why!). This week’s Money Diary is one of those “wait… this is actually so relatable” conversations. She’s a newly admitted lawyer who spent years living paycheck to paycheck while studying, prioritising travel over investing and genuinely having no idea what an ETF even was. Fast forward a few years and life suddenly got very expensive, very quickly. An apartment. A wedding. A honeymoon. Another holiday. A puppy. Moving costs. Furniture. And somewhere in the middle of all of that, she and her husband had the slightly nauseating realisation that they’d spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in a year… without really stopping to think about where any of it was actually going. And honestly? I think a lot of people will see themselves in this one. We talk about the pressure to buy property because everyone else is doing it, the reality of owning an apartment with brutal body corporate fees, lifestyle creep, ADHD hyper-fixation becoming an unexpected budgeting superpower, and what happened when she finally sat down and looked at her finances properly. Now she’s investing 40% of her income, building a portfolio she actually understands, and rethinking what financial security is supposed to look like in the first place. This one feels a little bit like a group chat with your financially self-aware friends. Slightly chaotic. Slightly confronting. But in the best way. Okay… this one still feels a bit surreal to say out loud. Right after the federal budget dropped, I sat down with Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, and Finance Minister Katy Gallagher to ask the questions our She’s on the Money community actually wants answered. We covered a lot. We spoke about housing affordability, negative gearing, capital gains tax changes, childcare costs, women’s health, paid parental leave, fuel prices, the gender pay gap and what the government is actually doing about the cost of living pressure Australians are feeling right now. We also had a really honest conversation about why the government changed its position on negative gearing, and whether politicians genuinely understand how financially stretched people are feeling. But because this is still She’s on the Money… things also went slightly off the rails. We somehow ended up talking about ChatGPT, Bluey, subscription creep, the Met Gala, free McDonald’s burgers, sourdough, single people being forgotten by the system, and the Prime Minister’s thoughts on Sabrina Carpenter’s outfit choices. Which, to be fair, was not where I expected budget week to go. If you’ve been trying to make sense of what just happened in Canberra, this is the budget breakdown you actually want to hear. The federal budget has dropped… and Australians have opinions. So Victoria sat down with Australia’s Treasurer, Jim Chalmers, immediately after the budget announcement to ask the questions everyone actually wants answered. From negative gearing and capital gains tax changes to the cost of living crisis, fuel prices, housing affordability, tax cuts and why blueberries suddenly cost what feels like a small mortgage repayment. They also get into the political backlash surrounding the budget, why the government changed its position on housing tax reform, whether Canberra is disconnected from how tough things feel financially right now, and what Treasurer Chalmers says Australians fundamentally misunderstand about the federal budget. There’s also unexpected chat about ChatGPT, air fryers, pocket money, coffee machines, influencers, and what it actually feels like to hand down a budget while the internet calls you “The Jim Reaper.” If you’ve been trying to make sense of what just happened in Canberra, this is the budget breakdown you actually want to hear. Sometimes being nosey pays off. Other times, it reveals that your partner hasn’t paid off their $40k credit card debt. Stressy and a little scandalous, this week’s episode of Friday Drinks covers a Money Dilemma about whether a listener should use their reno savings to help pay off her partner’s business debt. The federal budget officially dropped at 7:30pm tonight, but we recorded this episode from inside Budget Lock-Up BEFORE the rest of the country got their hands on it. At 6pm, while the internet was still speculating and journalists were speed-reading hundreds of pages of announcements and fine print, we sat down inside Parliament House to unpack the headlines we think actually matter to our community. Victoria is joined by Glen James from Money Money Money and Vince Scully from Retire Right, who also happens to own our financial services licence, which you’d think would mean we’d be on our best behaviour… but unfortunately that’s not what happened. Together, we break down:• the negative gearing and CGT changes everyone’s about to argue about• what the tax cuts actually mean for your wallet• housing affordability and first home buyers• women’s health funding• cost-of-living relief• and why the global oil crisis is suddenly impacting Australian households Plus, we had a cameo appearance from Katy Gallagher, Minister for Finance herself. This episode is landing slightly later than we planned because the audio quality wasn’t where we wanted it to be and after surviving Budget Lock-Up, the least we could do was make sure it didn’t sound like we recorded it through a microwave. This episode is what happens when financial planning and family planning have a baby. Why is it that egg-freezing and IVF feel like buzzwords; distant things that are only relevant once we (or the people we care about) start to consider the options? This changes now. Joining us on this week’s Deep Dive is sought-after fertility specialist and friend of the pod, Doctor Nicole Hope. The Medical Director at NewLife IVF has helped people to conceive and grow families for the last 20 years. From payment options to insurances and the difference between various treatments, tune-in for an in-depth discussion about the economics of fertility with NewLife IVF. CW: During this episode we discuss pregnancy and fertility; topics that some of our listeners might find confronting or triggering. Welcome back to Day 2 of our special archive series, The Compassionate Return. Today, we are exploring the healing power of Acknowledgment. Compassion begins the moment we stop running from our truths and start sitting with them in peace. In This Episode: Witnessing the Self: Why acknowledging your current state is the fastest way to emotional release. Quiet Presence: A guided meditation to help you honor your inner reality with kindness. A Daily Message for Your Heart: You may spend so much time trying to be the 'strong one' or the 'capable one,' especially when we are caring for others. Today, I want to give you permission to just be. You don't have to be anything other than what you are right now. When you acknowledge your feelings, you aren't being 'weak'—you are being honest. And honesty is the only ground upon which true healing can grow. As you move through your day, remember: you are seen, you are known, and you are deeply honored. This is day 2 of a 7-day meditation series, "Healing with Compassion: A Meditation Series for Self-Honor," episodes 2586-2592. THIS WEEK'S MEDITATION JOURNEY I want to start by wishing a very Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers, grandmothers, and those who provide that steady, nurturing light in our lives. Today, I've reached into the archives to bring back a very special series I recorded a few years ago. As I was sitting here with my tea, I realized that there is no greater gift we can give—to our mothers or to ourselves—than the gift of Compassion. This series, The Compassionate Return, is a journey of self-honor. It is about softening the edges of how we view our own lives so we can show up more fully for those we love. Have you ever thought, “maybe I’ve missed my chance.” This weeks diarist started uni three separate times and dropped out every single one. Worked 50-hour weeks in retail management for minimum wage. Genuinely believed that without a degree, there was a limit to what she’d ever earn or achieve. Relatable. Then life happened. A baby. A relocation. A partner changing careers. Another baby. A mortgage. A massive amount of imposter syndrome. But somewhere in the middle of all of that, she met a leader who saw something in her before she could fully see it herself… and everything started to shift. Now she’s 33, earning $140k in HR with no degree, investing for the first time, raising two kids, navigating a very real mortgage, and trying to work out how anyone affords dining chairs without having a small emotional breakdown. This conversation felt really honest. Not in a “perfect with money” way. More in a “figuring it out while life is happening” kind of way. It’s all too familiar. Work has you burning you out. And even your manager has suggested that you take some time off. So, why does it still feel weird to accept the offer, especially when you’re desperate for a break? In this week’s Friday Drinks we cover that icky feeling some of us get around taking leave, even though it literally exists to be used. Beyond the stigma, we unpack how taking stress leave might affect your insurances and what to consider before submitting your request. Say it with me: you cannot call yourself a financial adviser if you do not have a license (an AFSL). In this episode, we answer a DM that sends up more red flags than a carnival. A community member asks if she should take advice from an unlicensed financial adviser, even if it’s free. Hear us *calmly* explain why unsolicited advice is illegal, and could actually end up costing you more. Besties don’t let besties get scammed. WHO THE HELL IS HAMISH? Here’s a link to the series about a super-scammer, mentioned on the pod, where an unfortunate number of innocent people were scammed out of their super. The moral of the story? It could happen to anyone! Don’t let that be you. SUSS OUT YOUR COVERAGE Our partners at Skye Wealth are personal insurance pros. Learn more about them over here at skye.com.au. We’ll hear about the loan application process, fixed-price building costs, as well as what is (and isn’t) included along the way. You know when you meet someone younger than you and think… oh. You’re doing money better than I was. That’s this week’s Money Diary. She’s 21, still at uni, working multiple jobs and quietly building a six-figure portfolio. Not loudly, not perfectly… just consistently. Working in luxury retail, she’s watching people her age spend entire paychecks while she’s investing hers instead. Which, honestly, says a lot. This one isn’t about perfection. It’s about starting early, thinking differently, and what that can actually turn into. SORT YOUR INSURANCE: A big thank you to our partner Skye Wealth for bringing this episode to life. The cash rate. It’s up. It’s down. Honestly, it’s giving ‘chaos’ when it comes to our everyday spending. Almost as if the cash rate rules everything around us… In this week’s Deep Dive, we’re taking on the RBA; who they are, what they do, and how they call the shots when it comes to the cash rate. With real life examples, plus savvy money moves you can make to help prepare for the shifts, this episode will help you finally make sense of it all. She went from owing money to everyone… to building her dream home. This week’s Money Diary is a story about starting over. After having kids and going through a separation, she found herself navigating life as a single mum on one income, with the kind of financial pressure that leaves no room for error. But instead of staying stuck, she rebuilt. New mindset, new boundaries, and a completely different approach to money and relationships. Now she’s earning six figures in sales, has a deposit ready, and is about to start building her home. We get into what actually changed, how she approached money the second time around, and why being honest about finances early on made all the difference. It’s a reminder that your money story isn’t fixed… even if it feels like it is. SORT YOUR INSURANCE: A big thank you to our partner Skye Wealth for bringing this episode to life. Be honest… are you actually spending more, or does it just feel that way?In this week’s Friday Drinks, we’re unpacking the very real confusion between lifestyle creep and the rising cost of literally everything. If you’ve looked at your bank account lately and thought “how am I spending this much when I’m not even doing anything outrageous?”… this one’s for you. We’re also diving into a DM that hits a little close to home. What happens when you’re the one making all the financial decisions in your relationship… not because you want to control everything, but because your partner just isn’t interested? How do you get them involved without turning into the nag, and how do you stop carrying the guilt?Plus, as always: Jess brings the community money wins Bec delivers broke tips that actually work (especially if you’re in your “survival week” era) And we answer your Question of the Week, which might make you feel very seen…
If you’ve opened your investing app lately and immediately closed it again… this one’s for you. The share market has been all over the place, headlines are talking about global uncertainty, and it’s very easy to feel like you should be doing something with your investments or your superannuation right now. So let’s talk about it. Victoria and Bec break down what’s actually driving the market movements, what’s behind the recent drops, and how global events are flowing through to Australia and your portfolio. And more importantly… what to do next. Because when the market dips, the instinct to panic, sell your investments, or switch your super to something “safer” can feel like the right move… but it’s often the most expensive one. If you’ve been wondering what to do when the market drops, or feeling unsure about your investing strategy right now, this will help you make sense of it and feel a whole lot calmer about what comes next. This week’s Money Diary is from a 31-year-old nurse who fell pregnant at 30… while single and working 70-hour weeks. At the time, money wasn’t the problem. She was earning well, picking up shifts, saying yes to everything and just getting on with life. But there wasn’t much structure behind it. It was busy, but not necessarily intentional. And then everything shifted. Not because she didn’t have enough, but because she suddenly had a reason to think about money differently. To slow down, to plan, and to actually build something that could support her and her child. This episode isn’t about starting from scratch. It’s about taking what you already have and learning how to use it properly. It’s about stepping into a new version of your life, ready or not, and figuring it out as you go. It’s honest, it’s a little bit messy, and it’s a really powerful reminder that you don’t need everything perfectly mapped out to make it work. Sometimes it’s not about earning more. It’s about getting intentional with what you’ve already got. SORT YOUR INSURANCE: A big thank you to our partner Skye Wealth for bringing this episode to life. In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, my guest is Dr. David Anderson, PhD, a professor of biology at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). We discuss the brain circuits that underlie how emotions emerge and shape behaviors, including the neural control of fear, aggression and pain. We also explore how hormones and neuromodulators influence these emotional states, and why understanding these hidden internal processes is essential for improving future mental health treatments.
