In the last episode Hefrum and Hlin found themselves in the coastal settlement of Black Cliff on the Sea of Moving Ice. Beset by a huge snow storm, they decided to stay in town for the night. Before long our adventurers learned of a mysterious amulet that turned its wearer into a zombie and cursed others to become zombies, too. They have done their best to fend them off, but in the course of defending the village, Hlin became cursed. DM - Jennifer Taylor Jen can be found streaming on her Twitch channel. Frozenfar. The North. Icewind Dale. Whatever you chose to call this desolate and inhospitable land, the north became a haven for those wanting to disappear from the world. In Icewind Dale ten towns came together to form a settlement and offer a new beginning for the forgotten, and for nearly 400 years, Ten-Towns has known peace and war, prosperity and poverty. Their people are resilient and through it all, have come to symbolize the resilience of all. Just north of Ten-Towns there used to be a port settlement at the mouth of the Sea of Moving Ice. Known as Black Cliff, this used to be a port for those brave enough to navigate the ice pack to import their goods into Icewind Dale. Used to. As our story begins, Hefrumlir Warbraids and Hlin Trollbane find themselves in the port settlement of Black Cliff where a mysterious ship is about to make land. To eat or not to eat? Is it safe to eat Faerie Food? The answer is perfectly complicated: yes, and no. That is to say, it depends. There is a long-held belief that if you consume food or drink offered by Faerie, you will be bound to their realm for all times, never to return to your family and friends. How do we know this? Because those who have accepted Faerie hospitality and never returned have warned us! To add to the confusion… we discover that declining food or drink from the Good People can be as dangerous as accepting it and ponder what it is about Faerie food and drink which affects us so. * Fancy buying me a coffee? If you enjoy Encounters with the Good People and would like to give me a hand to continue in this work, please consider buying me a ‘coffee’. This is a really quick, simple and safe way for you to donate and support my work. Simply click on the ‘Buy me a coffee’ icon on my website and you will be helping to create and produce ‘Encounters with the Good People’ Podcast and YouTube videos. Warm thanks to Lisa for your very kind donation and lovely words of encouragement. It’s lovely to know you are out there listening and enjoying these chats on Encounters with the Good People. All support is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Kitty. * My new Online Store. Now you can take the Faerie folk with you everywhere you go! There are other great items too, a variety of bags, from a tote to a backpack or lunchbag, as well as drink bottles, caps, wee pins, mousepads and more.
You pretty much just click the staves to add notes to them in whatever lengths you want and it takes care of drawing all the stems and such and generally expressing the music you draw in using normal music notation rules. It's really cool and, due to the number of automatic organization and cleanup features, makes it quite easy to typeset sheet music. Even if you don't know much about musical theory, I'm confident you could still compose playable songs with relative ease with it. It's available for Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows. Not from Nantle but from our own research.. The Court of Hefaydd Hen THE COURT OF HEFEYDD HEN (or Hyfaidd Hen) – unknown, but, according to the Mabinogion, certainly not in Dyfed. But according to some other traditions, Hefeydd was the first King of Dyfed. Gorsedd Arberth was his burial place and also the entrance to Annwn. Was this the enchanted castle in the third Branch? A hero called Hefeydd Hir is found in the 6th century epic poem Y Gododdin (composed by a Briton named Aneurin who lived in a land which is now part of Scotland). In the second Branch of the Mabinogion he appears as one of the Seven Knights, King Hefeydd of Dyfed who died in 892 etc... Hefeydd was a common name in Mediaeval Wales. The Kingdom of Gwawl fab Clud Map of Scotland showing the Wall It is said that the literal meaning of the name is “Wall Son Of Wealth”. “Gwawl”, according to the University of Wales Dictionary means: The Vallum (Roman wall) between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde - the Antonine Wall, not Hadrian’s Wall Man Light But his last name more than likely refers to the River Clyde in Scotland. Therefore he was one of the people of the Old North, that is to say they were Britons, like the Welsh. Alt Clud - now called Dumbarton Rock Their capital was Allt Clud – a huge rock on the further north bank of the River Clyde. [Now called Dumbarton (City of the Britons) Rock NS399745]. Pwyll meets a mysterious Lady In the first episode of the second half of Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed we find out that it has been three long and glorious years since Pwyll journeyed to Annwn and became firm friends with Annwn and his own kingdom is just beginning to shown signs of strain. It has been hot with fine weather for so long that the possibility of drought is becoming a real threat. Pwyll has not taken a Queen and produced an heir and the people fear that the land is suffering from his lack of fertility. Pwyll, however, has other things on his mind... This episode is also the 7th episode of the First Branch of the Mabinogi: Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed and the beginning of the second half of that Branch - the story of his encounter with Rhiannon. The Iron Age fort on Camp Hill to the south of the town of Narberth is the most commonly accepted location for the Gorsedd of Arberth. We have marked it in Green with our location on Bryn Caerau marked in Yellow to the North-East of Arberth. Pic: Google Earth We suspect that these twin peaks are the site of the actual Gorsedd as they are higher than Camp Hill, match with the descriptions of the topography given in the text and have an earlier Bronze Age archaeological presence known as Caerau Gaer and Llandewi Gaer. Arberth, the "Sea-Voice" & the Gorsedd The River we have called the Sea-Voice is the river Marlais that flows from the River Taf. The Welsh name comes from 'marw glais' which means 'dead bruise' and therefore stagnant water, so we can only assume that it has long since become polluted. Does it move the heart or cause the foot to stomp? If so, then James Olin Oden plays it. With me it's always been about what moves the heart. The songs I sing are compelling stories whose telling must be told over and over again. The stories range from dark acts that should not be forgotten to the silly revelries that we should never forsake. My hope is that as my heart is moved by the music so too may yours be moved. Sláinte Mhór...James James Olin Oden plays Vocals, Classical Guitar, Bodhran, Bones, & Whistles. We are privileged to bring you his superb track, The First Shoots of Spring, which comes from the album, Samhain's March. You can find out more about James on his website or on his Contributor Page. The Trooping Fairies & the Tale of Frank Martin by W. B. Yeats W. B. Yeats (1865-1939) This superb and charming piece comes from an anthology of Irish folklore, edited by W. B. Yeats in 1888 called Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry. Many of these stories are from books which are archived at this site; some are from books which have yet to be converted to etext or now-rare source material. He selected many of the best (and often funniest) tales from other writers such as Lady Wilde, Croker, Lover, Hyde, and Carelton. Yeats wrote introductory material and notes to many of these stories. William Butler Yeats was an Irish poet and one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature. A pillar of both the Irish and British literary establishments, in his later years he served as an Irish Senator for two terms. Yeats was born and educated in Dublin, but spent his childhood in County Sligo. He studied poetry in his youth and from an early age was fascinated by both Irish legends and the occult. Those topics feature in the first phase of his work, which lasted roughly until the turn of the 20th century. His earliest volume of verse was published in 1889 and those slow-paced and lyrical poems display debts to Edmund Spenser, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and the Pre-Raphaelite poets. sheeogue sidheóg deenee shee daoine sidhe Book of Armagh Tuatha De Danān slooa-shee sheagh sidhe Marcra shee daoine maithe lepra-caun Ballisodare Plain-a-Bawn pooka A brief sample of "A Pretty Maid Milking her Cow" by Black Dog Boonzy can be heard in this piece, as can two harp pieces by Turlough O'Carolan played by Darren Raleigh (see below). Another brief sample of the pipes heard in the ancient tune of "Lough Erne Shore" by Andy Irvine and Paul Brady can also be heard where mentioned in the text. You can find the full text of the book on the Sacred Texts website and this piece at Trooping Fairies. The Rabbit Song by S. J. Tucker Blessings Fans of all ages come to see SJ Tucker for more than just the stories she weaves into her songwriting -- her musical talents are second to none. Her style is classified, at times, as "Celtic Blues", while her instrumental and vocal talents earn comparisons to Joni Mitchell, Ani DiFranco, Dar Williams, and Jeff Buckley. Not confined to one type of song or another, SJ spans opera, chant, and rockergrrl, employing deft guitar hands and the bluesy, powerful voice of a 300lb gospel singer--finely contained in a petite frame which earned her first band the name 'Skinny White Chick' by accident. An incredibly prolific writer, SJ Tucker has composed over 130 original songs and independently produced six full-length studio albums. SJ Tucker started on the road with her first album in 2004, and she is taking the nation by storm -- on her own power -- state by state. We are really proud to bring you her Rabbit's Song from her album Blessings, a powerful exploration of totems and the Trickster just perfect for Ostara. You can find out more about Sooj on her website at sjtucker.com or on her Contributor Page. Blodeuwedd by Rick Allen The Inconstant Bard An immortal voice and talent. The lyrical, bardic poetry of a Celtic warrior and spiritual seeker, this recording of Rick Allen's unforgettable voice, accompanied by the musical gifts of The Constant Cohorts, brings the listener back to the days of yore when Druids thrived, the Green Man freely roamed the land, passionate Love was a path to the Mysteries, the Muse was a Lady in White, “. . . and men were true.” This is Rick's own Tribute to the Maiden of Flowers, Blodeuwedd. Please visit our Contributor page to learn more about Rick Allen's story. Celtic Maidens by Ceri Norman Celtic Maidens From a young age Ceri Norman's love of mythology and history has inspired her. After gaining a degree studying History and English, Ceri worked in libraries and museums sharing this love with the people she met. Seeing the pleasure that books and history gave, Ceri started writing fiction that people of all ages could enjoy and relate to. As a deeply spiritual person she prefers her writing to have a spiritual and mystical flavour. Celtic Maidens is a supernatural tale of love, lives & obsession set against the dramatic scenery of the Welsh Mountains. Celtic Maidens tells the story of Siân Derwyn whose life holds few pleasures except for her friends, her interest in local folklore and the standing stones until the day that Ryan Ackley arrives in her remote Welsh village. Learn more about Ceri Norman on her website or on her Contributor Page. Atholl Highlander by Connemara Stone Company Original The Connemara Stone Company (CSC) are a Celtic Folk Rock and Folk Rock Band from Germany. They have now been together since 1995. In this period of time they have advanced from a Local Band to a fairly well known Band in the Celtic Folk Rock scene. Teaspoon Ring Oak, Broom & Meadowsweet by Damh the Bard The Spirit of Albion Damh is a modern-day Bard whose spirituality, and love of folk tradition, is expressed through his music, storytelling and poetry. Drawing on the Bardic traditions his performances are both entertaining and educational, weaving a tapestry of myth, peace, and anthems that speak directly to the heart, but never without a good splash of humour. This beautiful track, Oak, Broom & Meadowsweet, comes from Damh's third CD - The Spirit of Albion; a superb album that captures the full range of this master's talent. Pwyll prepares to enter a battle to the death! In the last episode, Pwyll had started his battle training with Arawn's Knights, defended the Kingdom of Annwn from strange, Brutish invaders and learned a valuable lesson from Arawn's beautiful Queen. In this episode, after a year of preparation and waiting, he gathers his forces and travels to the Ford between the Worlds. There, he will meet with Hafgan the Summer-White, the King of the Land of Summer and face him in a duel to the death. Only one will walk away. Will Pwyll be able to meet up to Arawn's hopes and expectations? This episode is also the 5th episode of the First Branch of the Mabinogi and continues the story of Pwyll, the Prince of Dyfed. Under the title of Ancient Britain and the Atlantic Zone, the project is now in its fifth year and is exploring the possibility that the ancient language of Tartessian is possibly the earliest known Celtic language and that the Celts came to Europe from the West. We covered the Year 3 conference and again in our report about the possible origins of Welsh. We also report that there is some evidence that an inscription in the Tartessian language may well have been found in Newfoundland indicating that the Celts may have visited the other side of the Atlantic at least 4,000 years ago! Carica05 (0:04)music box loop 29 (0:15)Hi, and welcome to the Open Licensed Music Podcast, the show where we highlight music from artists who let you share their music. I'm Ralph Wacksworth, and today's episode is featuring steampunk music. We've got a few songs with vocals this week, but without further ado, let's get started. The Doctor's Wife (5:47)London, 1856 - A Steampunk Orchestra (3:41)Remember The Name (Fort Minor) (Sinister Strings Mix) (4:52)Rom Bart-Insomnia [Soundtrack] (1:36)Wooden Rocks (1:05)steam engine at museum (0:59)wrenches_thrown_or_dropped (0:21)Ratchet1 (0:20)construction metal lumber (0:56)Metal Hammer on Metal on Wood Impact Collision Bang 44.1kHz (0:52)So, starting out the episode were two sound effects from FreeSound - Carica05 by melarancida and music box loop 29 by klankbeeld, which are both licensed under the CC Zero license. After the introduction was The Doctor's Wife by The Clockwork Quartet, which is available from their website at clockworkquartet.com and is licensed under an Attribution Noncommercial Share-Alike license. Then we had London, 1856 - A Steampunk Orchestra by Walid Feghali, which is available from SoundCloud and is licensed under an Attribution Noncommercial license. Next up was Remember The Name (Fort Minor) (Sinister Strings Mix) by tekp, which is available from ccMixter and is licensed under an Attribution Noncommercial license. After that was Rom Bart-Insomnia [Soundtrack] by Rom Bart, which is available from SoundCloud and is licensed under an Attribution license. Then we had Wooden Rocks by Christiaan Bakker, which is available from Jamendo and is licensed under an Attribution license. Finishing up was a mix I put together of a few industrial sound effects from FreeSound: steam engine at museum by 3bagbrew, which is licensed under an Attribution license, and wrenches_thrown_or_dropped by vibe_crc, Ratchet1 by orestes910, a chunk of construction metal lumber by cognito perceptu, and Metal Hammer on Metal on Wood Impact Collision Bang 44.1kHz by qubodup, all four of which are licensed under the CC Zero license.I've been a big fan of steampunk for years. I love the visual style, I love the dedication to craftsmanship, learning different construction techniques, and in general making things that not only function but look nice doing what they do. As long as I can remember, I've been a big fan of steam-powered devices and gears anyway, mainly because you can see how things work, and steampunk brings those together into an awesome aesthetic. Plus there's the element of classic literary influences mixed in, and as I'm sure you can probably tell from the audio books advertised on this podcast in the noncommercial breaks, I'm quite fond of that. It's just an all-around cool movement, and I'd love to see more people really taking part in it in not just a trend way, but in a paradigm way. Do what you do with quality to last. Fix things if you can. Take a pass on the throwaway society we've developed and learn the cool stuff your ancestors and predecessors knew. With that said, with the wide variety of people who have gotten into steampunk over the last few years, there's quite a bit of variation in what people do and do not consider steampunk music. I tend to think of it more as music that sounds very mechanical or which blends elements of old and new musical styles, and there's plenty of open licensed music out there which fits that. So much that I had to split the episode up so I could keep this at about an hour and do another episode later. Speaking of which, this episode's going to be long enough as is, so let's get back to things.traction engine x2 (1:31)Getaway (otra vez rmx) (voiceless mix) (4:19)BEAUTY FULL - sidecar tommy (3:06)Jester's Tear (2:43)That was another sound effect from FreeSound named traction engine x2 by NLM, which is licensed under an Attribution Noncommercial license. The first song in the set was Getaway (otra vez rmx) (voiceless mix) by gmz, which is available from ccMixter and is licensed under an Attribution Noncommercial license. After that was BEAUTY FULL - sidecar tommy by sidecartommy, which is available from SoundCloud and is licensed under an Attribution license. Finishing up was Jester's Tear by Celestial Aeon Project, which is available from Jamendo and is licensed under an Attribution Noncommercial Share-Alike license.Today's app-of-the-day is Emberwind, an HTML5 side-scroller game where you play as a gnome and run around helping people and whacking things with a stick. Pretty much a basic classic side-scroller, but it runs in a browser, and runs quite well. Try it out today at http://operasoftware.github.com/Emberwind/ with a capital E or take a look at the source code from https://github.com/operasoftware/Emberwind/ with a capital E.Now for a short noncommercial break from one of our nonsponsors followed by more music.20000 Leagues under the SeasUntitled 4 (ft. The3amAssociation, audiotechnica) (6:22)Pieza pequeña (1:01)Conjuring Steam (3:02)Roll Jordan Roll (2:19)The Guava Rag (1:04)Spirit of St. Louis (3:18)Live recording of In the jail house now (4:08)End of a story (2:29)That was Untitled 4 (ft. The3amAssociation, audiotechnica) by teru, which is available from ccMixter and is licensed under an Attribution Noncommercial license. After that was Pieza pequeña by BrunoXe, which is available from Jamendo and is licensed under an Attribution license. Next up was Conjuring Steam by MLucas, Roll Jordan Roll by The Joy Drops, and The Guava Rag by Brettstuff, all three of which are available from SoundCloud and are licensed under an Attribution license. Following that was Spirit of St. Louis by Lena Selyanina, which is available from Jamendo and is licensed under an Attribution license. Then we had Live recording of In the jail house now by Sid Qualls, which is available from SoundCloud and is licensed under an Attribution license. Finishing up was End of a story by zero-project, which is available from zero-project.gr and is licensed under an Attribution license. So, that's all for today. Remember - piracy of commercial music only proves your dependence on that model and justifies further censorship and restriction. So don't pirate it - replace it with something better. Listen to open licensed music, donate to the artists behind it, go to concerts, and buy music from artists whose record labels don't see you as their enemies. ¿a qué estáis esperando?

Feliz 2011… Aaaaadios. Yes, I am full of myself. Yes, I am in a bit of a mood. Yes, I believe that it's time for us to climb out of the kiddie pool and start aiming high. **Sigh** Just don't listen. Music by Celestial Aeon Project (http://www.mikseri.net/essence)
