Zum einen hat sich zwischen den beiden Teams in den letzten Jahren auch dank hitzigen Playoff-Spielen eine grosse Rivalität entwickelt, zum anderen treffen hier mit Dan Tangnes und Josh Holden zwei Trainer aufeinander, die im EVZ fünf Jahre lang als Headcoach und Assistent gearbeitet hatten und dabei zu den wohl grössten Freunden unter den Trainern der National League wurden.Die vierte Serie bleibt da fast ein wenig im Schatten der anderen Begegnungen. Zu Unrecht? Immerhin liegt beim Duell des Qualifikationssiegers Lausanne und Aussenseiter Langnau, der in der höchsten Liga erst zum dritten Mal Playoff spielen wird, das grösste Überraschungspotenzial.Ebenfalls demnächst beginnt das Playout zwischen Lugano und Ajoie. Der Verlierer muss danach die Ligaqualifikation um Auf- um Abstieg bestreiten - aber nur, wenn der EHC Visp B-Meister wird.

2017 begann das Duo Luca Cereda/Paolo Duca seine Arbeit beim HC Ambri-Piotta. Cereda als junger Cheftrainer, Duca als Sportchef - beide waren auf NL-Stufe Neulinge in ihrem Amt. Mittlerweile ist Cereda dienstältester NL-Headcoach. Dennoch dachte er im Sommer 2023 ans Aufhören - sechs Saisons im emotional aufgeladenen Tessin hatten ihre Spuren hinterlassen.Die Saison 2022/23 endete zudem unschön, der sportliche Erfolg blieb in der NL aus, das Team verpasste sogar das Pre-Playoff. Die Fans ärgerten sich und liessen ihren Frust Spieler und Trainer wissen - auch Ceredas Familie war involviert, was für den Cheftrainer eine unschöne Episode bescherte.Cereda sorgte sich auch um seine mentale Gesundheit - er kämpfte bereits in den Jahren zuvor mit Panikattacken, die von seiner Operation am Herzen 2000 herrühren dürften. Cereda spricht in dieser Episode des «Eisbrechers» auch von diesem Weg: Wie er heute Dinge tun kann, die vor ein paar Jahren noch fast unmöglich schienen: Zum Beispiel das Fahren in einem Bus.Trotz schlechter Saison 2022/23 in der NL: Am Spengler-Cup 2022 triumphierte Ambri und ist als Titelverteidiger auch dieses Jahr wieder dabei. Auf dieses Turnier freut sich Cereda besonders.

Fredi Pargätzi arbeitete bei Davos Tourismus, als 1990 der Job des OK-Präsidenten des Spengler-Cups frei wurde und ihn sein Chef bat, ihn zu übernehmen. Denn das Traditionsturnier ist von immensem Wert für den Kurort. Es waren schwierige Zeiten, der HC Davos war gerade in die 1. Liga abgestiegen. Pargätzi nahm die Herausforderung an und führte den Spengler-Cup mit Weitsicht und diplomatischem Geschick in die Moderne.Schon als junger Bub hatte ihn der Spengler-Cup geprägt, war Pargätzi als Helfer dabei – auch 1967 beim ersten Auftritt eines sowjetischen Teams. Er war fasziniert und gleichzeitig eingeschüchtert von den finsteren Gestalten, die Eishockey zelebrierten. Später spielte er als Spieler beim HC Davos selber mit, die Krönung seiner Aktivkarriere war der südafrikanische Meistertitel.Im «Eisbrecher»-Podcast spricht der 69-Jährige über die Magie des Spengler-Cups. Wieso Spieler aus aller Welt noch Jahre danach von ihrem Abstecher in die Bündner Berge schwärmen. Wie er damit umgeht, dass momentan Funkstille herrscht mit den Russen wegen des Ukraine-Kriegs. Und wie seine Familie reagiert, wenn er an Weihnachten jeweils präsent, aber mit dem Kopf ganz anderswo ist.

In light of the recent rise in Anti-Asian Hate Crimes we dedicated this podcast to learning more about the importance of mental health within the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. I was delighted to spend time on the podcast with Marcia Liu, Ph.D. who is a Licensed Counseling Psychologist. Dr. Liu currently runs a private psychotherapy practice and leads a mental health program at Hunter College - the AANAPISI Project (HCAP) - specifically focused on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Her research and clinical interests focus on mental health policy, acculturative stress, gender and race-related stress, sibling relationships, racial identity, trauma, psychodynamic processes and race, and Asian American Pacific Islander community mental health. She is an active member of the Asian American Psychological Association, and an alumni member of the Institute for the Study and Promotion of Race and Culture, under the direction of Janet E. Helms. Dr. Liu was born in NY before moving to Maryland. She received her BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, her MA from NYU, and her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Boston College.
