In THIS episode of Who Would Win: UNLEASHED, the show tears the roof off reality as two titans of pure devastation collide—the Unstoppable Juggernaut (unleashed by Eric Holmes) crashes full force into the monstrous Doomsday (championed by James Gavsie)! On one side: Juggernaut. Once Cain Marko slipped the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak over his knuckles, he became a living embodiment of limitless momentum. Bulldozing through X‑Mansion walls, shrugging off Thor's hammer strikes, and plowing across continents without slowing a step, Juggernaut is the definition of inevitable. Nothing stymies him—no force, no magic, no plea for mercy—because when he says “I'm the Juggernaut,” it isn't hype; it's physics bending to his will. But squaring off against him is Doomsday. Forged on Krypton through endless cycles of death and genetic resurrection, this gray Goliath evolved to conquer anything that ever killed him. He's crushed Justice Leagues, impaled gods, and—oh yeah—beat Superman to literal death. Each time he falls, he resurrects immune to the method that felled him, muscles red‑lined with hatred and raw violent instinct. Punches that register as tectonic events, hide tougher than Superman's best heat vision—Doomsday is a walking apocalypse with no off‑switch. So, can Juggernaut's infinite momentum and mystical invulnerability steamroll the beast that broke the Man of Steel? Or will Doomsday's adaptive rage and planet‑punching power finally bring the Juggernaut to a dead stop? Buckle up, Legion of Audience—the immovable object just met the unstoppable extinction event, and only one monster is lumbering away from this cataclysm!Join hosts James Gavsie and Eric Holmes as they go full main-event hype breaking down wrestling legend, Star Wars lore, close-quarters combat, and every legendary moment these two icons have ever delivered. Will the power of Hulkamania prevail? Or will Chewie prove that it's not wise to upset a Wookiee?Strap in—this is Who Would Win: UNLEASHED at its wildest. Superman is a 2025 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character Superman. Written and directed by James Gunn, it is the first film in the DC Universe (DCU) produced by DC Studios and the second reboot of the Superman film series. David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent / Superman, alongside Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced. In the film, Superman must prove to the world that he is their protector after billionaire Lex Luthor enacts a plan to turn public opinion against him.Development on a sequel to the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) film Man of Steel (2013) began by October 2014, with Henry Cavill set to reprise his role as Superman. Plans changed after the troubled production of Justice League (2017) and the Man of Steel sequel was no longer moving forward by May 2020. Gunn began work on a new Superman film around August 2022. The title Superman: Legacy was announced the next month, Gunn was confirmed to be directing in March 2023, and Corenswet and Brosnahan were cast that June. The subtitle was dropped by the end of February 2024, when filming began in Svalbard, Norway. Production primarily took place at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, with location filming around Georgia and Ohio. Filming wrapped in July. The film takes inspiration from the comic book All-Star Superman (2005–2008) by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, among others.Superman premiered at the TCL Chinese Theater on July 7, 2025, and was released by Warner Bros. Pictures in the United States on July 11. It is the first film of the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Today, we're throwing it back to a special conversation recorded in 2020 during the virtual Baltimore Comic Con. My guests are the legendary team of J.M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire, two of the creative forces—alongside Keith Giffen—behind one of the most beloved and influential Justice League runs of all time.Their groundbreaking late-‘80s take on Justice League International reinvented the team book with heart, humor, and character-driven storytelling. It was a bold departure from grim and gritty trends, instead focusing on the humanity—and hilarity—of heroes like Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Martian Manhunter, and Guy Gardner. And now, decades later, the spirit of that run has resurfaced in a major way, inspiring the tone and team dynamic of the Justice Gang in the new Superman film from James Gunn's DCU.
Today's episode is a deep dive with writer James Robinson, recorded back in 2011 during a fascinating stretch of his DC Comics career. We cover a lot of ground—from his return to one of his most beloved characters in The Shade, spinning off from the Starman mythos, to the behind-the-scenes realities and editorial limitations that shaped his Justice League of America run.Robinson opens up about his creative choices during the Flashpoint event, particularly his darker take on The Outsider, and how the Superman stand-in Mon-El came to headline the Superman books during a major story pivot. We also talk about the launch of the New 52, and his reimagining of the Justice Society of America and Earth-2, showing how he brought fresh perspective to classic Golden Age characters under a new editorial mandate. Throughout the conversation, James shares his passion for DC's B- and C-list heroes—characters like Solomon Grundy, Donna Troy, and Congorilla—and how he always strived to give them depth and relevance. And for fans of comics history, there's a charming detour into his childhood in England, and how kids in the '70s got their hands on American superhero books across the pond. It's a candid, passionate, and sometimes frustrating look at what it means to write in a shared universe—and what it takes to elevate the characters that don't always get the spotlight.

Onko Corenswet toimiva Man of Steel? Miten vertautuu James Gunnin aiempiin leffoihin? Entä aiempiin Superman filmatisointeihin? Entä kuka on paras Teräsmiehen näyttelijä?

The time is finally here. My most anticipated movie of the year - James Gunn's SUPERMAN - is finally arriving in theaters this weekend. I had the incredible opportunity to see this movie at an early Fan First Screening yesterday, which is how I'm getting this review out about the time it is debuting worldwide, in a select few countries today. This is the official, theatrical launch of James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU, that I really hope will actually have the chance to thrive. I love DC Comics, and I've loved Superman since I was a small child. I was introduced to the character through the Justice League cartoons and the original 1978 Richard Donner film. I dressed up as Superman and tried to do the curl and all of that. It has been a LONG wait to finally have another Superman movie on the big screen, and - boy, oh boy - has it been a tumultuous one.I was a huge fan of Henry Cavill's Superman and am one of the people who love Man of Steel. Zack Snyder's Justice League is one of my favorite comic book movies of all-time too, but the toxicity around the excitement and hate for this new movie has been rough. It's the 'sports-ation' of movie fandoms that has really frustrated me over the last few years, and it's showcased no more clearly than how people talked about this movie up until release (and probably after release too). That being said, because the character means so much to me and because James Gunn's film really resonate with me on an emotional level, I've always known he was going to deliver a worthy film that starts the Big Blue again. You'd know that about me if you've listened to any of my reviews of James Gunn's films and shows, which are all glowing, and listened to my breakdowns of the trailers. The trailers certified for me that it seemed like Gunn was finally taking the character back to its much needed hopeful and optimistic, yet slightly retro, roots. So, does James Gunn's Superman deliver on its promises; is it the truest version of Superman we've had in a long time? Find out in this SPOILER-FREE review!Superman:Written and Directed by: James GunnSuperman created by: Jerry Siegel & Joe ShusterProduced by: James Gunn, Peter SafranExecutive Producers: Nikolas Korda, Chantel Nong Vo, Lars P. pWotD Episode 2989: Superman (2025 film) Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 276,620 views on Tuesday, 8 July 2025 our article of the day is Superman (2025 film).Superman is a 2025 American superhero film based on the eponymous character from DC Comics. The film follows Superman's journey to reconcile his alien heritage with his adoptive human family.Development on a sequel to the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) film Man of Steel (2013) began by October 2014, with Henry Cavill set to reprise his role as Superman. Plans changed after the troubled production of Justice League (2017) and the Man of Steel sequel was no longer moving forward by May 2020. Gunn began work on a new Superman film around August 2022. In October, he became co-CEO of DC Studios with producer Peter Safran and they began work on a new DC Universe. Gunn was revealed to be writing the film in December. The film takes inspiration from the comic book All-Star Superman (2005–2008) by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, among others.Superman premiered at the TCL Chinese Theater on July 7, 2025, and is scheduled to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures in the United States on July 11. It is the first film of the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. It has received positive reviews from critics. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:40 UTC on Wednesday, 9 July 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Superman (2025 film) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Matthew.

We're hitting it about a year before it should come up in our timeline, but it made sense to do it after we finished the Kurt Busiek run on the main title...that's right, it's the four issue Avengers and JLA crossover from 2003 by Busiek and George Perez! And it's an excuse to have Jason and John talk about some DC characters! This issue is a lot of table setting, but we discuss the Justice League and a ton of DC characters and get that table setting out of the way so we can get into the exciting stuff next issue!

1987 was a transitional year in comic books. DC successfully relaunched Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Justice League in their new post-Crisis universe. Marvel started a new universe too, which they called, uh, "New Universe." Also at Marvel, Spider-Man got married, an event so big that an actual wedding ceremony was held at a baseball stadium. Meanwhile, Alan Moore wrapped up his brilliant run on Swamp Thing, American Splendor's Harvey Pekar appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, Max Headroom made the cover of Mad Magazine... and Peter Porker the Spectacular Spider-Ham met the nefarious Dr. Chickenstein. Today on Word Balloon, I'm joined by acclaimed TV writer and comic book creator Christopher Cantwell. You know him as the co-creator of AMC's Halt and Catch Fire, but today we're diving into his latest project: the brand-new IDW Star Trek series, Redshirts — a sharp, subversive take on the classic Trek trope that finally gives the most expendable crew members their due. We also explore his standout Marvel runs, including a definitive modern take on Iron Man, the psychological complexity of Doctor Doom, and the gritty crime world of Golden Goblin. Plus, we get into his recent DC Comics work, where he brings the Challengers of the Unknown back into the spotlight in a wild miniseries featuring the Justice League. From Trek casulties to the far corners of the DC and Marvel multiverses — it's all coming up today on Word Balloon. Part 2 follows

This episode is a special Pride Month encore from 2016—my very first conversation with writer Steve Orlando. Steve joined me back then to talk about his new BOOM! Studios book Namesake, a bold sci-fi adventure about a gay fireman who crosses into an alternate dimension to bury his fathers—and uncover the truth about his identity and past.We also dove into Steve's impactful work in the DC Universe, including Supergirl, Midnighter & Apollo, and his ambitious plans for the then-upcoming Justice League of America launch in January. It's a great time capsule of Steve's early rise—and the kind of inclusive storytelling he's continued to champion ever since. Let's rewind to 2016 and celebrate Pride with Steve Orlando.
