In this lively and irreverent episode of The Middle of Culture, Peter and Eden build a tier list ranking 29 DC movies, from the highs of Christopher Reeve's iconic Superman to the lows of Black Adam, which earns a new category all its own: "F*** You Forever." Along the way, they debate the merits of Nolan's Batman trilogy, praise Margot Robbie while trashing her material, and wax poetic about Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman and the ridiculous joy of Catwoman (2004). The episode also dives into recent reads, including the emotionally devastating Adachi and Shimamura 99.9, with Eden delivering an impassioned recounting that might just wreck you. Add in some heat-dome weather talk, tech-death music recs, and plenty of hot takes, and you've got one of the most entertaining episodes yet.Episode Notes:Welcome BackEden shares weather misery and emotional tales of crying over Adachi and ShimamuraPeter updates on his son's relentless swim meet schedule and praises the dedication of teen athletesWhat We're IntoEden continues to love The Apothecary Diaries, now reading it aloud with CassiDeep emotional dive into Adachi and Shimamura 99.9, including:Cozy slice-of-life momentsPost-apocalyptic existentialismA bittersweet afterlife reunion that left Eden in tearsPeter shares his current reading on behavior change and playing Mario Kart with the kidsMetal music recs from Peter:Fallujah and Exocrine (tech-death highlights)Sigh's re-recording of Hangman's Hymn (2007 → 2025 edition)The Tier List Begins29 DC movies ranked from S-tier to a newly invented bottom tierImmediate praise for Superman: The Movie -- the only true S-tier filmBatman Begins and The Batman hold strong in A-tierThe Dark Knight lands at a controversial B, Dark Knight Rises flops to DSurprising affection for Catwoman bumps it up to C, while Suicide Squad, Justice League, and Black Adam are rightfully trashedEden passionately defends the joyfully chaotic Batman & Robin, despite its executionZack Snyder's Justice League makes it to B solely for its absurdityLego Batman wins hearts, even from Eden who has a Lego movie vendettaNew Tier Created: "F*** You Forever"Reserved exclusively for Black Adam, a film so despised that Peter stopped watching anything with The Rock afterwardWrap-UpOne clear conclusion: 1978's Superman stands unmatchedRichard Donner hailed as the god-tier director James Gunn can't touchGentle roast of MCU's decline vs DC's chaotic legacyCall to action: listeners encouraged to weigh in via feedback@themiddleofculture.com

This week we discuss some of our favorite or most memorable Kaiju! Plus our favorite recent comics and our thoughts on Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong!
The finale of the Cadmus Saga is upon us as the original seven of the Justice League take on the combined Luthor/Brainiac creature. Will they be able to save the world? Will they remember they have superpowers in time? This is the episode that almost has the guts to kill off The Flash. Before that: your hosts did a little protesting this weekend. Plus: I get cranky about film journalists, Derek loves a H.E.R.B.I.E ad and James Gunn says stuff. And your questions get answered! If you don't care about that stuff skip to 43:47!Next week: our last Justice League Unlimited episode for now, as we watch the Epilogue! After that it's Ironheart! Thanks for listening.

After Jimmy finished reading Hawkgirl: Once upon a Galaxy, he had to invite Jadzia Axelrod onto the podcast. Not only is her Hawkgirl run with Amancay Nahuelpan tremendous, it is now canon that Kendra is a Philadelphia Eagles fan and her "Go Birds!" may be the first in DC Comics history. Of course, Jadzia and Jimmy discuss Galaxy: The Prettiest Star, Galaxy's appearance in Hawkgirl, and Jadzia teases the just announced Galaxy: As the World Falls Down! This is a fantastic conversation about comics, but don't miss Jadzia discussing the development of the Metropolis hot dog. Go Birds! As Kat plans for life after high school, Taylor begins to wonder what the future holds for her. When the Vane, an alien race that destroyed her home planet, finally arrive on earth in search of Taylor, her biggest fear becomes reality. If Superman can't even handle this threat, what chance does Taylor have to save her best friend, the love of her life, and the entire world?! Sometimes I just stumble across people and love what they do and create. This is the case with Cailin aka Cailin.in.Character on socials. I loved her Midnight Spider cosplay, started following her, and got to know more of what she's into from what she shared. Now, you get to hear about some of her favorite fandoms! We kick the first half of the episode off talking about DC and Marvel. With DC, we start off by talking about how Cailin got into DC via the DC Animated Universe (hello Justice League!). She talks about her love of Batman and Wonder Woman, and some more of the shows and movies she's enjoyed. On the flip side, with Marvel, this was something that Cailin wasn't into. Until she fell in love with Groot. Cailin talks about some of her favorite shows and movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Wandavision, Netflix's Daredevil, and more. Then, Cailin talks to me about the Romantasy genre of books. She talks about how she first got into the genre - from which book started it all, a book series that she said is a great gateway into the genre, and some of her favorites, including LJ Andrews work. Lastly, we wrap up with Cosplay. Cailin talks about how she got interested in Cosplay. We talk about some of her favorite characters she's represented, the background behind Midnight Spider, and what could be coming in the future.

Show notes provided by Joe PelusoJust imagine walking to the corner drug store, swinging the door wideopen, your eyes fixated on the comic spinner rack--and like a boltfrom the blue--there it is, in all its four-color glory--the firstappearance of The Justice League of America! Well, it didn't quite happen like that for me when I firstdiscovered the JLA. I was only four when B&B #28 hit the stands inlate 1959. Little Joe (no relation to the Cartwright clan) purchasedhis first copy of a JLA mag when he was ten, but he would discoverthis gem years later at one of Phil Seuling's New York Comic Cons. Join your long-winded "corner" host Joe, and fellow comic bookhistorian James as they mine the JLA's initial bow, and all theriotous ramifications it would wrought on the Silver Age of comics. From the fertile minds of Julius Schwartz, Gardner Fox and MikeSekowsky, to a golf game played by competing publishing "moguls", tothe fascinating construction of the team, this is definitely a seminalepisode of the Mint Podcast created for the discriminating comic bookhistorian!

Holy Kryptonian catastrophe, comic crusaders! This week on Play Comics, we're diving headfirst into the digital dumpster fire that is Superman: Countdown to Apokolips for the Game Boy Advance – because apparently someone thought the best way to honor Superman: The Animated Series was to trap the Man of Steel in a tiny screen prison with graphics that make MS Paint look like the Sistine Chapel. Released in 2003 by the brave souls at Mistic Software (after poor Crawfish Interactive literally died during development – talk about your occupational hazards!), this isometric adventure promised to let players soar through Metropolis while battling Livewire, Metallo, and the fashion disaster known as Kalibak. What it actually delivered was a gaming experience so punishing that even Darkseid would file a complaint with customer service. Joining us for this digital descent into madness is Adam Maresh from my local shop back when he lived by me – a man who's seen more comic-to-game adaptations crash and burn than a rejected Justice League movie pitch. Together, we'll explore how this GBA “gem” managed to score a whopping 45% on GameRankings and somehow convinced IGN to give it a 4.5/10 (which in retrospect feels generous). So grab your emergency kryptonite antidote and prepare for an episode that's more fun than actually playing the game – which, let's face it, isn't exactly setting the bar stratospheric. Will Superman's portable adventure redeem itself through sheer nostalgic charm, or will it crash harder than a Daily Planet exclusive? Tune in to find out if this animated series tie-in belongs in the Fortress of Solitude… or the Phantom Zone! Learn such things as: Should we get Golden Age Superman back? What powers do you give the man who could have anything? Where's Krypto? I want Krypto! Everyone is always talking about Krypto. And so much more! You can find Adam at a place that even I technically don't know the location of. In this radical episode of Past Tens: A Top 10 Time Machine, Dave and Milt hop in their DeLorean — flux capacitor fully operational — and set the date for June 16, 1984. They're not just cruising through the Billboard Top 10; they're living it like extras in Footloose. The episode kicks off with a heartfelt and totally tubular tribute to Dave's late father — think The Karate Kid's Mr. Miyagi, but with better dad jokes. From there, it's a parade of parachute pants, popped collars, and personal memories as they discuss the artists who ruled the airwaves: Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, and Cyndi Lauper — basically the Justice League of 1984 pop. Of course, it wouldn't be Past Tens without a few twists. There's a Playdate Quiz that would stump even The NeverEnding Story's Atreyu, a musical mashup segment that's more chaotic than Gremlins after midnight, and their signature song substitution game — think Indiana Jones swapping the idol for a bag of sand, but with Huey Lewis tracks. Some highlights: 00:54: A heartfelt memorial for Dave's father, complete with more heart than Kevin Bacon dancing alone in a warehouse. 08:33: Pop Culture Highlights: Ghostbusters hit theaters, Purple Rain was on the horizon, and nobody put Baby in a corner (yet — Dirty Dancing was still a few years away). 15:22: Countdown kicks off — Night Ranger's “Sister Christian” taught us all what "motoring" really means (spoiler: it's not what your dad thinks). 38:01: Musical Mashups — imagine Footloose meets Thriller but performed by the cast of Revenge of the Nerds. 39:22: Laura Branigan's “Self Control” — the unofficial soundtrack to sneaking out past curfew in 1984. 44:54: Huey Lewis reminds everyone that the heart of rock and roll is still beating — even if it's wearing leg warmers. 59:33: Steve Perry's “Oh Sherrie,” a ballad so powerful it could get E.T. to phone home twice. 01:19:50: Cyndi Lauper's “Time After Time” — guaranteed to make even the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man misty-eyed. 01:23:15: Cyndi's legendary ties to the wrestling world — she could literally have body-slammed a Goonie. Milt also teases his upcoming trip to Africa, though we're unclear whether he'll be traveling by Toto song or Temple of Doom bridge. It's a journey that's equal parts nostalgia, musicology, and a John Hughes movie montage. Crank up your Walkman and join the ride — just don't feed Milt after midnight.

Jace and Rocky breakdown the DC Comics titles for the week of June 4, 2025. It's a great week with DC Pride 2025 telling a complete story rich with history and character. The Atom Project comes to a very satisfying conclusion. Absolute Green Lantern continues to be a bit of a mystery while Batgirl and Birds of Prey are both jam-packed with action. Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong is back and as fun as ever, while the Secret Six delves into the relationship between Deadshot and Catman. The relationship between Lois and Superman is still being fleshed out but it is clear that Lois feels drawn to this young alien and where her loyalties lie will be a big part of the story. Join us to hear all about these books and more!

Jeez, Superman's a real jerk in these episodes, and his behavior is not getting any better. Picking up from where last week left off, this ep sees the Justice League Watchtower shooting a huge fusion beam at... an American city? Seems bad, even if J'onn J'onnz insists "It wasn't me."Before that we go long, and I mean long, on Cobra Kai. Again. I'm almost done binging the show so I promise this won't go on forever. There's some news and then we take our sweet time with the questions this week. Tangents abound, and Derek roasts me good. If you don't care about any of this skip to 1:13:42. I said we went long! Next week: Panic in the Sky. The evil plan against the JLU is picking up steam, can Luthor and his gang of random villains break the Justice League? Thanks for listening!

Batman Ninja Vs Yakuza League When it came out in 2018, Batman Ninja may not have been our cup of green tea, in fact it was definitely NOT. But is this sequel many years in the making, more to our tastes? Or has it gone off like sushi in the sun? It's Batman as a Ninja, with his Bat-boys in tow, going up against not the Justice League, but the Yakuza League... yes Yakuza League. It's much easier if you don't try to have it make sense. Just let the weird wash over you... This one was Quinny's choice and as such he's willing to refund anyone the $7 Dollars* it takes to watch it. jill has already claimed hers and Dion is not far behind. Synopsis: Only a day after returning from the past, Batman and his allies discover that the world is not quite the same as they left it. The entire island of Japan no longer exists and neither do the heroes of the Justice League. But before they can get a handle on what is going on, yakuza literally start raining from the skies. *Quinny will refund you in the form friendship and free podcasts; not actual cash. https://youtu.be/GgUt8I_L17s A huge shout-out to the Bat-fans and Bat-fam who join in with our moderated live-chat during the Twitch stream, each Tuesday night at 7:30pm AEDT. This week the Suicide Squad, err sorry, Task Force X as this is a cartoon, breaks into the Justice League's Watchtower Satellite and do battle with a real collection of Morts (we explain that reference on the show). How does this tie into the Cadmus Saga? And can you just tear the Martian Manhunter in half???Before that: letters! News! Rumors! And Derek makes the argument that casting news is... a spoiler? Don't ask me, I just work here. If you don't care about any of this stuff skip to 57:32.Next week: Justice League Unlimited season 2, episode 9, Question Authority!
