In this special crossover episode of Men of Steel, we kick off a two-part team-up with the Long Live the Legion podcast! We're diving into “Foundations,” the early 2000s arc from The Legion—with special guests Jim and Jay from LLtL and the artist of the arc himself, Chris Batista! Together, we explore Superman's legacy in the 31st century, the evolving identity of the Legion, and what it was like illustrating this future-forward storyline. Part 2 continues on Long Live the Legion—don't miss it! Overview Case Aiken introduces crossover episode, featuring Jmike Folson, Jim Fetters, Jay McKiernan, and Chris Batista discussing the Legion of Superheroes 'Foundations' arc, celebrating its 45th anniversary. The plot centers on Darkseid snatching people from time to harness dark matter, with the Legion uncovering Superboy during the investigation. DNA (Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning) established as the core writing team; their earlier success with Marvel's cosmic stories enhances credibility. Chris Batista expresses concern over technology portrayal, advocating for a more advanced depiction of the Legion compared to Justice League. The Legion World headquarters is praised for its futuristic elements like replicated home worlds and teleportation gates. Despite rising sales and positive fan response, the series faced cancellation, causing frustration as issue 25 became the second-best selling of the series with a 25% readership increase. Character designs for the Servants of Darkness were mostly created by Chris Batista, with a conscious effort to maintain Kirby's aesthetic. Superboy's dual role as both Legion member and connection to Titans was anticipated, reflecting long-time fan expectations for character involvement. Kid Quantum is recognized as the first female leader of color in the Legion, showcasing character dynamics and development alongside Cosmic Boy. The evolution of Superboy's design aimed to match Teen Titans appearances, highlighting editorial influence on character aesthetics.   Notes ️ Podcast Introduction and Setup (00:00 - 02:09) Case Aiken introduces the Men of Steel podcast crossover episode with Long Live the Legion podcast, featuring co-host Jmike Folson and guests Jim Fetters, Jay McKiernan, and artist Chris Batista. Discussion focuses on Legion of Superheroes 'Foundations' arc, specifically issue 25 which serves as both story continuation and 45th anniversary celebration. Chris Batista reveals behind-the-scenes details about working as lead artist on the arc, noting DC doesn't produce this Legion continuity anymore so he can speak freely. Story Overview and Context (02:09 - 09:54) Jmike Folson summarizes the Foundations plot: people being snatched from time by Darkseid to steal dark matter for restarting Apokolips, with Legion discovering Superboy during investigation of warp phantoms. DNA (Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning) established as the writing team, with connections drawn to their later successful Marvel cosmic work including Guardians of the Galaxy. Legion Lost miniseries and Legion Worlds established crucial backstory, with 25 issues of world-building leading to this commemorative arc. ️ Technology and World-Building Discussion (09:54 - 16:05) Chris Batista expresses frustration with Paul Levitz rejecting advanced technology concepts for Legion, arguing they should appear far more advanced than Justice League. Legion World headquarters praised as major advancement - a planet with replicated home worlds and teleportation gates, making Legion feel appropriately futuristic. Discussion of how DNA run embraced technological advancement while previous runs kept Legion at similar tech level to 20th century heroes. Character Design and Development (01:01:03 - 01:24:10) Chris reveals Servants of Darkness designs were largely his creation except for Orion, with specific mentions of including Firestorm, White Martian, Lobo, Green Lantern, and Big Barda. Orion design intentionally modeled after Destroyer from Thor, maintaining Kirby aesthetic while creating intimidating servant appearance. Invisible Kid and Brainiac 5 romantic moment revealed as editor Steve Wacker's spontaneous addition 'just to mess with fans' - became lasting fan discussion point. Publishing History and Cancellation (01:24:16 - 01:59:06) Series cancellation explained as sudden higher-up decision despite rising sales and positive fan response to Superboy addition. Issue 25 was second-best selling of entire series with 25% increase in readership, making cancellation timing particularly frustrating. Original plans included Superboy remaining in both Legion and Titans simultaneously, with extensive story arcs planned for Element Lad return and Lightning Lad separation. Artist Collaboration and Creative Process (20:40 - 01:19:06) Chris describes working relationship with DNA as collaborative, with writers trusting him to design new characters like Legion cadets and including Easter eggs like Kent Shakespeare and Polar Boy. Multiple pencillers used for issue 25 to handle commemorative scope, with each artist assigned specific character groups to avoid overlap. Coloring technology evolution discussed, with modern computer coloring providing more tools but potentially reducing creative necessity of older 64-color process limitations. ⏳ Superman Connection and Time Travel Elements (34:02 - 01:54:06) Clark Kent and 90s Superboy both featured as characters pulled from time, with Clark becoming servant of darkness while Superboy joins Legion. Superboy wears classic costume with Legion belt buckle addition, fulfilling long-time fan expectations while serving story purposes. Time dilation plot involves universe getting smaller and past being erased, though hosts acknowledge the temporal mechanics don't fully make sense. Character Relationships and Dynamics (46:03 - 01:30:24) Mech (Lightning Lord) rehabilitation storyline discussed as more complex than typical villain treatment, showing struggle between evil nature and love for siblings. Kid Quantum established as Legion's first female leader of color, with organic romantic relationship with Cosmic Boy developing throughout arc. Livewire/Element Lad fusion creates extremely powerful character combining lightning abilities with matter transmutation in crystalline body. Technical and Production Details (01:36:23 - 01:51:38) Secret Files issue placement in continuity questioned due to timeline inconsistencies with main story events. Chris notes Superboy's physical design evolution throughout arc as editorial mandated size increases to match Teen Titans appearance. Force field technology and advanced Legion equipment discussed as properly futuristic elements that should distinguish team from contemporary heroes.

We have come back from space and landed the Waverider in Metropolis. Lex is in his power armor and fighting off Hawkgirl and Superman. His armor is damaged, and he retreats to Luthor Corp. There he finds Mercy Graves, his former driver and bodyguard. She has taken Luthor Corp to new success and has no desire to help Lex.  And so he searches out his former Luthor Corp top scientist, Professor Ivo. But to his dismay, he finds Ivo dead in his bed. Thinking he's at a loss for help, Ivo's last creation appears, and it's Amazo, an ever evolving android. Lex finds he is a blank slate (Tabula Rasa) and manipulates him to help. Amazo does Lex's dirty work getting supplies for his armor and taking on the Justice League.  He can copy the powers and abilities of anyone he meets. The League divides up, seeking out info from Ivo's notes, seeking Amazo, and J'onn is doing a mind sweep to find Lex, but opening his powers up to the whole city overwhelms him. J'onn mentally hears all the bad things about humans and is disturbed and runs to the forest outside the city for peace. The League attacks Amazo and is getting beat down. J'onn realizes that his power will help Amazo see the true intentions of the League and Lex when he copies his mental abilities. Amazo hears Lex's mind and sees he's been lied to and manipulated. Lex doesn't like where this is going, and uses Ivo's failsafe and blows off Amazo's head. But Amazo adapts and survives. He flees to the stars and Lex ends up in jail.   Contact Information: If you want to join in the discussion, you can submit feedback via email to TomorrowsLegendsPodcast@gmail.com or at at https://www.speakpipe.com/TomorrowsLegends . When it comes to story & collaboration, Batman & Robin Year One is a dream project for Chris Samnee and Mark talks about the importance of bringing emotion to that story. Mark also discusses his love of working in different time periods and having a mix of projects that tie in closely to the overall universe but also having books that stand on their own, such as what he is building in Action Comics as we see Clark and the Kents learn what it means to be Superboy and grow into Superman. Finally the guys finish up talking about Mark's return to The Flash with Christopher Cantwell and how Impulse is living up to his name. There's a ton packed inot this chat so don't miss it.

The galactic war between Darkseid's Apokolips and the Highfather's New Genesis is raging, and the Highfather's forces led by Orin, Darkseid's biological son, are winning. But that all changes when Brainiac arrives. Things are so bad Darkseid must ask his enemy, Superman, and the League for help. The League agrees over Superman's objections. They split up and Batman & Wonder Woman head to New Genesis looking for help. The League works with Apokolips and defeat Brainiac causing him to retreat. They follow him to his asteroid base, but it was a well laid trap. Brainiac and Darkseid work together to capture Superman. Brainiac wants to evolve and needs Superman's DNA to do it. But Darkseid uses the station to try and destroy New Genesis. Thankfully the League can stop him, except that Superman is bent on ending Darkseid. It takes Batman to get him away before the asteroid is destroyed.   Contact Information: If you want to join in the discussion, you can submit feedback via email to TomorrowsLegendsPodcast@gmail.com or at at https://www.speakpipe.com/TomorrowsLegends . [School of Movies 2025] This is a BIG one folks, the first major change in direction for silver screen DC comics adaptations since Nolan's Batman Begins in 2005 (though it has plenty of recent tonal forerunners to back it up, including Aquaman, Blue Beetle and the first Shazam! all of which we recommend seeing as well). This is what Warner Bros. were blushingly groping for in 2017 while trying to course-correct Zack Snyder's Justice League in the edit. But it isn't just a statement of intent for the future and a mission statement for potentially carving out a much more successful, crowd-pleasing cinematic universe, this is, first and foremost a GREAT superhero movie, bringing an even less-compromised version of Clark to the big screen than the classic Donner films. The red outerpants are back, bringing with them an unabashed joy at finally getting to be THIS version of itself, powered by phenomenally talented young stars and balancing humour with heart. The level of adulation and happiness we've seen exhibited over this one has been nourishing, and while there's plenty who have a bone to pick over decisions made within this flawed and messy movie I'd really like it to be the opposite of Snyder's take, and be a unifying rather than dividing force. So all are welcome, you don't have to agree with us, and maybe we can illuminate the qualities on show here in a way that helps some folks tentatively embrace Superman. In THIS episode of Who Would Win: UNLEASHED, the show tears the roof off reality as two titans of pure devastation collide—the Unstoppable Juggernaut (unleashed by Eric Holmes) crashes full force into the monstrous Doomsday (championed by James Gavsie)! On one side: Juggernaut. Once Cain Marko slipped the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak over his knuckles, he became a living embodiment of limitless momentum. Bulldozing through X‑Mansion walls, shrugging off Thor's hammer strikes, and plowing across continents without slowing a step, Juggernaut is the definition of inevitable. Nothing stymies him—no force, no magic, no plea for mercy—because when he says “I'm the Juggernaut,” it isn't hype; it's physics bending to his will. But squaring off against him is Doomsday. Forged on Krypton through endless cycles of death and genetic resurrection, this gray Goliath evolved to conquer anything that ever killed him. He's crushed Justice Leagues, impaled gods, and—oh yeah—beat Superman to literal death. Each time he falls, he resurrects immune to the method that felled him, muscles red‑lined with hatred and raw violent instinct. Punches that register as tectonic events, hide tougher than Superman's best heat vision—Doomsday is a walking apocalypse with no off‑switch. So, can Juggernaut's infinite momentum and mystical invulnerability steamroll the beast that broke the Man of Steel? Or will Doomsday's adaptive rage and planet‑punching power finally bring the Juggernaut to a dead stop? Buckle up, Legion of Audience—the immovable object just met the unstoppable extinction event, and only one monster is lumbering away from this cataclysm!Join hosts James Gavsie and Eric Holmes as they go full main-event hype breaking down wrestling legend, Star Wars lore, close-quarters combat, and every legendary moment these two icons have ever delivered. Will the power of Hulkamania prevail? Or will Chewie prove that it's not wise to upset a Wookiee?Strap in—this is Who Would Win: UNLEASHED at its wildest. Today, we're throwing it back to a special conversation recorded in 2020 during the virtual Baltimore Comic Con. My guests are the legendary team of J.M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire, two of the creative forces—alongside Keith Giffen—behind one of the most beloved and influential Justice League runs of all time.Their groundbreaking late-‘80s take on Justice League International reinvented the team book with heart, humor, and character-driven storytelling. It was a bold departure from grim and gritty trends, instead focusing on the humanity—and hilarity—of heroes like Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Martian Manhunter, and Guy Gardner. And now, decades later, the spirit of that run has resurfaced in a major way, inspiring the tone and team dynamic of the Justice Gang in the new Superman film from James Gunn's DCU.

Today's episode is a deep dive with writer James Robinson, recorded back in 2011 during a fascinating stretch of his DC Comics career. We cover a lot of ground—from his return to one of his most beloved characters in The Shade, spinning off from the Starman mythos, to the behind-the-scenes realities and editorial limitations that shaped his Justice League of America run.Robinson opens up about his creative choices during the Flashpoint event, particularly his darker take on The Outsider, and how the Superman stand-in Mon-El came to headline the Superman books during a major story pivot. We also talk about the launch of the New 52, and his reimagining of the Justice Society of America and Earth-2, showing how he brought fresh perspective to classic Golden Age characters under a new editorial mandate. Throughout the conversation, James shares his passion for DC's B- and C-list heroes—characters like Solomon Grundy, Donna Troy, and Congorilla—and how he always strived to give them depth and relevance. And for fans of comics history, there's a charming detour into his childhood in England, and how kids in the '70s got their hands on American superhero books across the pond. It's a candid, passionate, and sometimes frustrating look at what it means to write in a shared universe—and what it takes to elevate the characters that don't always get the spotlight.
