The Americans are very proud of their written constitution. During the first 3/8 of President Trump's second term of office, the constitution has been severely tested. Where has the Constitution succeeded in providing legal safeguards, clarity and stability, and where has it failed? How will the remainder of this presidency look? And what is coming after Trump? This lecture was recorded by Clive Stafford Smith on the 4th of June 2026Clive Stafford Smith JD OBE is a dual UK-US national, the founder and director of the Justice League a non-profit human rights training centre focused on fostering the next generation of advocates. He was the Senior Prefect at Radley College, where he studied maths and science; then a Morehead Scholar at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), where he took a degree in Politics; and a Stone Merit Scholar each of his three years at Columbia Law School, graduating in 1984. He previously founded and directed the legal action charities Louisiana Capital Assistance Center (1993 in New Orleans) and Reprieve (1999 in London). Since 1984 he has tried many capital cases, and helped to represent over 400 people facing execution in the US and elsewhere. He also brought the first challenge to Guantánamo Bay, where he has secured the release of 87 detainees, and continues to assist the remaining 15.  In all five of the cases he has helped bring to the U.S. Supreme Court the petitioner has prevailed. He has recently taken on the case of Aafia Siddiqui, the woman who has most suffered from the US rendition-to-torture program – abducted with her three children. He continues to work on capital cases in the US, including a Post-Mortem Project where he is investigating the claims of innocence of 184 people executed since 1977.Clive has published a number of books including Bad Men (2008, describing work in Guantánamo) and Injustice (2012, on the capital case of Kris Maharaj), both of which were short-listed for the Orwell Prize; and most recently The Far Side of the Moon (2023), deconstructing the parallel lives of his father and a client Larry Lonchar, both of whom were labelled Bipolar. He has many other publications, including manuals for the defence of capital cases, and law review articles about aspects of capital defence. He has worked on many films and documentaries, starting with Fourteen Days In May (1987), recently ranked as one of the top BBC documentaries of all time. While continuing his litigation practice, Clive teaches part time at Bristol Law School as well as running a summer programme for 35 students in Dorset, his home. He has received all kinds of awards in recognition of his work, including an OBE by Queen Elizabeth II for “services to humanity” in 2000. In its pages, you'll see Bram Stoker's Dracula working for the Allies during World War II. Like a bomb, he's dropped from a plane upon a secret Nazi gold train. He lands in the caboose. He proceeds to slaughter his way toward the engine. Many losers are torn limb from limb. Folks have already compared its action to John Wick, but it's more like Game of Death smashed with Snowpiercer. As Dracula works his bloody way down the train, new foes present themselves, boss-level style, and each one represents a different mindset or philosophy. Porter and Cannon excel in the excessive bodily harm, but simmering beneath the violence is a powerful reckoning with the human experience and the darkest depths our species can plunge. We got Emily Oberman on the program! She is a Partner at Pentagram and perhaps best known for her work in the entertainment industry. It's the story of a people who've witnessed so much monstrosity at the hands of invaders. It's a story of people finding strength in their neighbors, ancestors, and legends. The first issue is out now, from Dark Horse Comics and Tiny Onion, and we investigate it meaningfully with both storytellers. Set in Puerto Rico, the main character is Loli, an activist protesting an incoming resort, the face of which is yuppy CEO Simon Hunt, who is using every slippery trick in the book to break ground despite opposition. Loli is incensed and focused on stopping the overdevelopment of her ancestral lands, but is her fixation in part because she is avoiding processing a horrendous grief, since her father died alone in a hospital during Hurricane Maria? This week on the podcast, we speak with Julio Anta and Daniel Irizarri about Beast of Borikén, witnessing endless horror, and hope through collective action. We discuss the influence of The Creature from the Black Lagoon and the appeal of monsters. Also, what does it all have to do with Robocop 2? Today, I interview Nevin Seus, one of the music editors of SUPERGIRL!A 20-year-veteran in Hollywood, he's no stranger to DC projects, working on MAN OF STEEL, BATMAN V. SUPERMAN and JUSTICE LEAGUE.However, this newest project represents a different challenge for him, given that composer Claudia Sarne (THE BOOK OF ELI, TRIPLE 9) had only six weeks to deliver a full score. For Seus, that means whatever pieces Sarne provided needed to be distilled into its clearest and most impactful form, ASAP.Sometimes, this means stripping a scene entirely of music. In others, it means suggesting accents to give a fight scene more weight or hunting down the synthesizer that'd distinguish a space alien's presence in the score.During much of this interview, I try to break down what it means to work as a music editor, list the responsibilities entailed. I think we do an honorable job, but I get the impression from Seus that a mere 30 minutes won't even crack the pavement on this subject. The Justice League is up against Amanda Waller, her council of allies, and Taskforce X (a.k.a. The Suicide Squad) this week.  Waller is a planner and wants to protect the world from the League by any means. Batman and the League must examine themselves and their crew carefully. "The Doomsday Sanction" has a confrontation between Batman and Waller that leaves them both shaken. She and her allies are creating means of stopping the League to prevent what happened with the Justice Lords. In this process, they created Doomsday. The Justice Lord's Superman lobotomized Doomsday. But he has regenerated and is set free by Dr. Milo. Doomsday interrupts the League's rescue mission and fights Superman. Batman stops the Kryptonite nuclear bomb and Superman traps Doomsday in lava. The League sends him to the Phantom Zone. Batman is still leery of what the League can do. "Taskforce X" is Waller's Suicide Squad. All the members except for Flag are criminals freed from death row. They are forced into five years of service with an explosive implanted in their heads. Flag, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, the Clock King, and Plastique are tasked with getting abord the Watchtower. Once there, they are to blow the reactor to cause confusion and steal the Annihilator. The Clock King's plan goes well, until the Taskforce reaches the bridge level. Shining Knight, Vigilante, and Atom Smasher put up a fight that slows them down. Martian Manhunter almost has them, until Plastique threatens an unconscious Atom Smasher with a bomb in his mouth. Captain Atom helps but the Taskforce, minus Plastique, escape. They deliver the Annihilator to Waller. That might also be a cry for help, but we're not here to judge. Justice League Chronicles was Ubisoft's love letter to the animated series, which means it had genuinely great source material to pull from and a screen roughly the size of a Post-it note to work with. The Justice League animated series was the kind of show that made you sit down and watch it with your kids because it was actually that good, and somehow that energy had to survive the trip to a device that ran on two AA batteries. Here to help make sense of it all is Doug Adamson from The Monitor Tapes, a man whose podcast is literally named after the thing the Justice League uses to watch for trouble. Justice League Heroes: The Flash took the Game Boy Advance, the beloved animated series, and a Justice League comic run and asked the eternal question: how many Rogues can you stuff into a handheld beat-em-up before the whole thing starts wobbling?
