earn how to get clean, upfront, professional-sounding vocals without guesswork. In this episode of the Mixing Music Podcast, Dee Kei and Lu break down the top five vocal mixing mistakes and the exact ways to fix them. You will hear why too many narrow high-Q EQ cuts remove character, how to set attack and release for musical compression, when to use parallel compression, and why reverb and delay must be automated for movement and depth. The guys also cover context and referencing so your tonal choices fit the genre and era, plus essential quality control to catch pops, clicks, tuning misses, and bad edits before delivery. Finish with a practical mindset shift: the best mixers are the best communicators, so talk to the artist and get the target sound before you touch a knob. What you will learnSmarter EQ: limit surgical notches, use wider moves, reference the right recordsCompression that works: signs of over-compression, breath and sibilance control, parallel options, dialing attack and releaseReverb and delay that serve the song: EQ your verbs, automate throws and levels, use dryness for intimacyContext is everything: genre trends, artist preferences, prior discography, talk to the client firstQuality control checklist: fades, pops and clicks, tuning, file naming, reliable deliverySUBSCRIBE TO OUR PATREON FOR EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!SUBSCRIBE TO YOUTUBEJoin the ‘Mixing Music Podcast' Discord!HIRE DEE KEIHIRE LUHIRE JAMESFind Dee Kei and Lu on Social Media:Instagram: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLu @JamesParrishMixesTwitter: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLuThe Mixing Music Podcast is sponsored by Izotope, Antares (Auto Tune), Sweetwater, Plugin Boutique, Lauten Audio, Filepass, & CanvaThe Mixing Music Podcast is a video and audio series on the art of music production and post-production. Face it, everyone loves a good fight. And musicians and singers are always adding an extra layer to their entertainment value - intentionally or accidentally - by engaging in battles with their peers. Some of these feuds are exaggerated and some are underplayed. Some have an obvious bad guy while in others it seems like both parties should share the blame. Some seem to be about nothing, and others seem to be about everything. It seemed like the stakes couldn't have been higher than they were in the recent Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar feud ... that is, until you remembered Tupac Shakur vs. The Notorious B.I.G. (both of whom died from drive-by shootings just months apart). Internal wars chipped away at some of rock's best bands - from the Beatles and The Kinks to Pink Floyd and Fleetwood Mac. Meanwhile, some of the most iconic singers were locked in bitter rivalries, including Prince and Michael Jackson as well as Axl Rose and Kurt Cobain. Then there were the entertaining battles of the divas - Cher vs. Madonna, Elton John vs. Madonna, Whitney Houston vs. Mariah Carey, Mariah Carey vs. Jennifer Lopez. ... And we'll never forget the most inexplicable feud that just seems to go on and on: Kanye West vs. Taylor Swift. This week your hosts of "How We Heard It" recap all of these fights and many more - the ones that made them laugh, the ones that made them wince and the ones that made them scratch their heads. They also take a look at the artist who seems to be fighting the entire world. Even if you've never heard of her.
We open with a sobering follow-up: the future is less about AI toast (though Red Dwarf predicted it) and more about a soul-stripping "infrastructure of meaningless" after an AWS outage proved how fragile the internet is. Corporate overlords, like Elon Musk, are taking note: he finally addressed Starlink's use by Asian scam syndicates, but his attention is mostly on superintelligence, which Wozniak, Prince Harry, and 800 others want banned. Meanwhile, Meta, despite pouring $27 billion into data centers, suddenly cut 600 AI jobs, and Amazon is preparing to automate a half-million warehouse positions, offering drivers AR spy glasses and suggesting a new "Help Me Decide" AI tool to automate the exhausting micro-decision of which air fryer to buy. This dystopian fever dream peaked when Suzanne Somers' widower revealed he built a full-on robotic AI twin of the late actress. Predictably, Tesla stock tumbled, and the crypto grift continued with the pardoning of Binance founder Zhao, leaving SBF to ponder his failed check-bounce in jail.Speaking of soul-crushing, Disney's latest nostalgia raid, Tron: Ares, tanked harder than anticipated, proving not every Gen-X intellectual property is a worthy cash cow. But fear not, there's still great TV to be had: we recommend the clever dramas Slow Horses and The Diplomat Season 3, the high-stakes culinary nightmare Knives Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars, and the surprisingly excellent Gen V (which you must watch before the next season of The Boys). We also got our fix with the Pluribus trailer, Bullet Train, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, and the deliciously low-stakes reality shows Come Dine With Me, Hotel Costiera, and The Celebrity Traitors UK/Canada. Sadly, we must mourn the end of Food Network's The Kitchen. Yet, no matter how good the show, you still have to deal with Ticketmaster, which is still lying about "fighting bots" while cornering the secondary market. In the world of Apps & Doodads, OpenAI dropped its "Anti-Web" browser, ChatGPT Atlas (a data mule in disguise), and a new app now fakes your vacation photos (perfect for burned-out users). X is poised to sell "rare" usernames for millions (with a terrible subscription catch), while some clever hacker figured out a $60 mod to disable the privacy light on Meta's Ray-Ban spy glasses. Fellow podcast host Dave Bittner joined us to agree that the new Hall of Presidents format is better without the political posturing and confirmed the joy of old-school, purple-ink-smelling Spirit Duplicators (and we checked out a Star Wars fan film trailer for the AT THE LIBRARY section). Don't forget your Tilly Hat! Finally, R.I.P. Soft Cell's musical force Dave Ball, aged 66; the hits still hit.Sponsors:Private Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today. Southside Tribe!! In this follow-up to the "Little Fox of Success" episode, KB helps tackle a truth that's very easy to overlook — sometimes, success can be more dangerous than failure. From Saul's downfall to Nebuchadnezzar's pride to Israel's stubbornness, they explore how power and achievement can quietly erode faith and dependence on God, even for folks not in the limelight. We also draw parallels to today's culture — from Kanye West's rise and turmoil to the temptations that come with visibility and online influence, even in Christian ministry. The conversation gets extra real when KB opens up about a moment after one of his biggest shows — when the crowd was chanting his name, while heaven's voice felt faint; an experience which led him to take time off to re-center his heart and remember his first love. With their signature honesty and humor, KB and Ameen remind us that winning isn't wrong — but winning without humility is a recipe for disaster. Come rock with us! Just in time for Halloween, we're hosting a virtual hauntology reading group (specifically, hauntology the music genre) at 4pm ET next Thursday, October 30. If you want to join in, sign up for a paid subscription, or toss a few bucks into our haunted tip jar, and we'll send you the readings and a link to log into the conversation. We hope it'll be the first of more group reading sessions to come.We spend a lot of time here talking about the structural forces that turned pop culture into an endless churn of sequels, remakes, and nostalgia plays. But what if the blame for our current “creative recession” lies on more than just economics or platforms? What if our cultural values themselves have shifted in ways that make true innovation harder to sustain? That's the focus of Blank Space: A Cultural History of the Twenty-First Century, the forthcoming book from Tokyo-based culture critic W. David Marx—and probably the first major exhaustive account of the last 25 years in music, film/TV, internet culture, and fashion. He doesn't just look at the technological, political, and economic forces that that created a winner-take-all landscape where billionaires and centi-millionaires like Taylor Swift, Kanye West, Paris Hilton, MrBeast, Jay-Z and frankly Donald Trump took up all of the cultural oxygen in the room, making it harder and harder for the next generation of innovators to break through. He zeroes in on the cultural attitudes that have led us here—and that set us apart from our 20th-century forebears—including poptimism, the valorization of entrepreneurial heroism, cultural omnivorism, and more.In addition to Blank Space, David the author of the mega-influential books Status and Culture: How Our Desire for Social Rank Creates Taste, Identity, Art, Fashion, and Constant Change and Ametora: How Japan Saved American Style. He joins us to talk about the mind-boggling task of summing up the past quarter-century of culture, and why most of the coolest, most innovative outputs ended up getting pushed to the margins. We also get into what originality means in a climate of constant churn, and why he believes that fighting for it is still important, even in a postmodern landscape where “everything has already been done.”Finally, David makes the case that building a healthier cultural ecosystem starts with changing our cultural attitudes. That means embracing and reinforcing social norms that have fallen to the wayside in the past quarter century, like normalizing giving credit to smaller artists, learning the canon so we can break it, and yes, making it lame to sell out again.Pre-order Blank Space, which is out November 18 via Penguin Random House. In this episode of Selective Ignorance, Mandii B sits down with super producer A-King, journalist Jayson Rodriguez, and special guest Glasses Malone for a bold, thought-provoking, and humor-filled exploration of culture, community, and connection. The conversation kicks off with a spirited discussion about the Powerball lottery and the fantasies it fuels [01:24], as the crew reflects on how sudden wealth can amplify values—or expose insecurities. From there, they shift into a sharp critique of community ownership and responsibility [02:47], questioning what true “buy back the block” movements look like in practice and who actually benefits when outsiders invest in Black neighborhoods. The dialogue takes a playful yet insightful turn with a dive into celebrity gossip and gender dynamics [03:41], using pop culture as a lens to unpack deeper truths about fame, loyalty, and the human desire for validation. Glasses Maloneoffers a compelling perspective on the identity of hip hop and cultural authenticity [05:38], reminding listeners that the genre’s foundation lies in truth-telling and community representation, not algorithms or vanity metrics. As the episode progresses, the hosts unpack the nature of relationships and accountability [12:41], questioning how much transparency partners owe each other and how past experiences shape current dynamics. This seamlessly leads into navigating fame and public perception [20:06], with reflections on how visibility alters personal relationships—particularly in the age of social media. The group then circles back to a fan-favorite question: “What would you do if you actually won the lottery?” [23:39], sparking an honest debate about money’s impact on morality and motivation. A recurring theme of giving back and community impact emerges [29:53], as Mandii and her guests emphasize the importance of reciprocity and responsible leadership. That message is echoed in their dissection of the Turkey Leg Hut controversy [34:19], a heated conversation about respectability politics, community standards, and the tension between cultural pride and public image. The tone shifts as the panel examines men’s insecurities around women’s pasts [41:20], tying it to the broader complexity of romantic relationships [50:00] and the unrealistic expectations often placed on women in love and life. The discussion deepens further with Kanye West’s ongoing struggle with fame and mental health [53:22], exploring how the pressures of celebrity amplify emotional vulnerabilities and distort public empathy. This leads naturally into a sharp analysis of power dynamics in relationships [59:27], where the hosts explore how ego, gender norms, and social conditioning influence control and communication. From there, they open the floor to conversations around sexual education and representation [01:04:50], acknowledging how misinformation and stigma still shape public discourse—particularly in communities of color. In a standout moment, they reflect on Snoop Dogg’s evolving views on LGBTQ+ representation [01:15:21], celebrating growth while confronting the cultural hurdles that make such progress difficult. The episode concludes with a nuanced discussion on tourism in underprivileged communities [01:23:18], questioning the ethics of cultural consumption versus contribution, and challenging listeners to think critically about how they engage with spaces that aren’t their own. “No Holes Barred: A Dual Manifesto Of Sexual Exploration And Power” w/ Tempest X!Sale Link Follow on Social MediaMandii B Instagram/X @fullcourtpumps Glasses Malone @glassesloc Follow the show on Social MediaInstagram @selectiveignorancepodTiktok @selective.ignoranceX/Twitter @selectiveig_podSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this week's episode of So What Now?, we dive into parenting highs, lows, and the unexpected in-betweens. Dex kicks things off by sharing her experience at a frat party with Mikaela – the drinks, the vibes, the "what am I doing here?" moments. Meanwhile, Carla continues her fight with the public school system to get the proper support Psalm needs — it's real, it's frustrating, and she doesn't hold back. The convo then takes a sharp (and fuzzy?) turn to Kim Kardashian's latest business move: faux-fur thong panties. Yes, you read that right. They're sold out, and we're asking: What is going on out here?! Wild or genius? Maybe both. We also unpack Kim's recent interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, where she gets vulnerable about co-parenting with Kanye and reflects on choosing a partner who didn't live up to the legacy her own father left. This hit Carla hard, she opens up about the deep guilt she's carrying around the choices she made in her own relationships — especially when it comes to her kids' fathers. It's raw, real, and a reminder that healing isn't linear. The episode closes with a reflective but practical list: 13 decisions to make by 45 so you don't have regrets at 70. From finances to friendships to finally putting yourself first, we break them down and share where we're at on the list. Tune in, laugh, cry, and say “So what now?” with us. Opened way back in 1931, this building and the people inside have been at the cutting edge of recording technology for over 90s years. Abbey Road Studios is most famous for being where The Beatles recorded almost all of their music, but it also drove innovation with stereo recording, multitracks, editing, and the shift from analog to digital recording. In addition to all of those amazing Beatles records – which we'll get to – some other stuff recorded at Abbey Road includes Dark Side of the Moon and albums from Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Oasis, the Hollies, Radiohead, and the Zombies. Music scores for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Marvel movies, and video game soundtracks for Halo, Call of Duty, and World of Warcraft. They even recorded some of Winston Churchill's famous speeches during World War II to help keep morale high. From classical roots to rock rebellion, Abbey Road's always been ahead of the game, rewriting rules along the way. So kick back, feel the beat, and join us as we explore the studio that turned sound into a revolution. Let's roll! Episode Playlist Check out our episode playlist here. Send us a textIt's Monday, and the Back in Time Brothers, DJ Paulie and Lou, are back on URL radio for another show! Join the brothers for this week's episode, "From Fame to Fizzle."The highlight of the show is DJ Brit's in-depth countdown segment focusing on the theme "From Fame to Fizzle: Hyped and gone artists of the 80s and 90s". Brit counts down the musical acts that shot to the top quickly, grabbed headlines, and then "faded from the spotlight almost as quickly as they arrived". Featured artists include the one-hit wonder Marcy Playground ("Sex and Candy"), Crash Test Dummies, Robbie Neville ("C'est La Vie"), Sophie B. Hawkins ("Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover"), Cutting Crew ("I Just Died in Your Arms"), and Terrence Trent D'Arby ("Wishing Well"), whom critics once compared to Prince. In addition to the countdown, the episode features several fan-favorite segments:Rock Talk: Host Todd Snyder chases ghosts in "The Lost Album"segment. Todd delves into records that were fully written, recorded, or sometimes even pressed, but never officially released due to circumstances ranging from spiritual visions and paranoia to perfectionism or simple theft. Albums discussed include The Beach Boys' mythic *Smile*, Prince's recalled *The Black Album* and *Camille*, Dr. Dre's highly anticipated *Detox*, and Kanye West's crowdsourced ghost record, *Yandhi*.Stupid Criminals: Lou and Paulie detail bizarre arrests from across the country and the world. Stories include thieves busted after pulling their getaway vehicle into a drive-thru car wash, a prisoner who got lost inside the ductwork, a man who robbed the tattoo shop where he just got a distinctive tattoo, and a man in Malaysia who performed DIY surgery to implant metal balls that later began to rust.Random Fat Fat Fat Facts: The brothers share strange trivia, covering topics such as the slight time lag in brain perception (about 50 milliseconds), the Malagasi chameleon's short life, the spiny anteater's four-headed penis, the fact that ear wax is a fancy type of sweat, and how dolphins play with puffer fish to get a buzz.Crazy Classifieds: The show introduces a new segment featuring humorous and bizarre classified ads, including a search for a roommate who must love true crime documentaries at 3 AM and a dating ad seeking a companion who enjoys off-key shower concerts and brings tacos.Support the showThanks for listening. This week, Guest Host Donovan Adkisson joins Jason DeFilippo to wade through the usual tech chaos; California is attempting to regulate the inevitable AI companion chatbots, which is timely, considering ChatGPT is about to launch erotica (with age verification, natch). Turns out, most of the world is less stoked about our algorithmic future than Silicon Valley is. Speaking of chaos, Elon Musk's Boring Company racked up nearly 800 environmental violations in Vegas, and his Starlink satellites are burning up the atmosphere, validating the Kessler Syndrome predictions (and ruining backyard astronomy). On the ground, Georgia Tech is deploying drone first responders, ensuring campus security is instantly airborne, while the UK's Online Safety Act slapped 4chan with a hefty fine. We also mourn a Crypto Kingpin who met his end in a Lamborghini following a market crash. Finally, beware that "perfect" house listing, as the owner likely used AI to virtually enhance that curb appeal. It seems even the guy who coined the term "Vibe Coding" admits that relying on AI for complex software is "Net Unhelpful," proving that humans still have to do the heavy lifting—a fact Uber might ignore, as they plan to pay drivers to train AI between rides. Speaking of dumb human stunts, some genius launched the "World's First Waymo DDoS" by summoning 50 robotaxis to a dead end. On the entertainment side, it's time to binge Gen V before Season 5 of The Boys drops; also, why did Apple rename Apple TV+ to Apple TV? The guys also discuss the eternal cultural resonance of Idiocracy and the perfection of Galaxy Quest (and its fantastic documentary, Never Surrender). On the work front, Jason switched back to Things 3 because life is too short for ugly software, even as Windows 10's impending end-of-life threatens to create an e-waste disaster. Also, Wi-Fi 8 is coming soon, because the recently ratified Wi-Fi 7 just wasn't cutting it.Finally, the Grumpy Old Geeks wish a happy birthday to friends of the show and offer remembrance for the recently deceased, including screen icon Diane Keaton and KISS founding member Ace Frehley (though, honestly, no one here watched KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park). Interview by Spitty / spittywill We recently got to catch up with the legendary Brooklyn MC Talib Kweli! During our chat he told us what his experiences were growing up in Bedstuy, how his parents influenced him, and how being into music, movies, and poetry shaped his artistry. He shared when he initially jumped “off the porch”, why he started to take the craft and culture serious at 15yrs old. Kweli explained why he thinks people downplay conscious rappers, Jay z shouting him out in a song, and he told us a few stories about the classic single “Get By”! Also, while we were catching up, he shared with us what it was like to work with Madlib, dropping music on MySpace, working on Liberations 1 & 2. Spending time in Africa, how he met Dave Chapelle, working on Reflection Eternal, what Combat Jack meant to the culture, addressing people in the comments on social media, how he helps his community stay aware, he talked about the book club, meeting Kanye, working with his daughter and much more! The Dutch courts finally did something useful: they told Meta to quit force-feeding algorithmic slop to everyone, so Facebook and Instagram users might actually see posts from friends again—if they can remember who those are. Meanwhile, OpenAI's Sora 2 rollout is the kind of chaos that makes you wonder if the company replaced QA with a TikTok filter, as outrage videos flood the internet faster than you can say “deepfake meltdown.” Apple banned ICEBlock for being too effective while ICE now wants its own social media surveillance tool—one that OpenAI shut down when Chinese accounts tried to build it. California's hammering Tesla for its abysmal insurance claims handling, OpenAI is gobbling up chunks of AMD, and consultants got caught using ChatGPT to fake reports before proudly partnering with Anthropic, who just landed Deloitte as its latest “enterprise AI” victim. Elsewhere in this circus: a Florida teen asked ChatGPT how to kill his friend, Taylor Swift fans are furious her new promo video used AI slop (“too rich to be this cheap”), and Apple's “Find My” led cops to a mountain of smuggled iPhones. In Media Candy, Brian's stunned The Diplomat scored a third season, The Long Walk is being pitched as Stand By Me meets Squid Game, California finally bans loud streaming commercials, and Amazon censored Bond posters to remove guns because apparently irony is dead. AI “musicians” are signing record deals while Zelda Williams begs people to stop resurrecting her dad with deepfake garbage. In Apps & Doodads, Jony Ive's OpenAI gadget is delayed (good), Rivian insists we'll “appreciate” not having CarPlay (we won't), Spotify and ChatGPT are teaming up to read your soul through playlists, and Jason warns everyone that the Echo Show is basically an ad-spewing parasite. Apple's now facing a cybercrime probe in France for Siri's wiretapping habits, and if you're nostalgic for simpler times, ioquake3 will let you relive Quake III Arena glory on a modern rig. At the Library, Peter Cawdron's Dark Beauty: First Contact belly-flops as a Slaughterhouse-Five tribute, while Cory Doctorow's Enshittification nails exactly why everything sucks—even if his fixes are pure science fiction.Sponsors:CleanMyMac - clnmy.com/GrumpyOldGeeks - Use code OLDGEEKS for 20% off.Private Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today.
