This week on The American Family Farmer, host and lifelong farmer Doug Stephan (www.eastleighfarm.com) shares critical updates impacting small farms across the country.Doug opens the show with a look at the ongoing immigration enforcement issues that are threatening family farms. The American Farm Bureau Federation has expressed serious concern over reports of renewed immigration crackdowns that are removing essential, hardworking laborers from small farm operations.Next, Doug dives into the challenges facing the beef cattle industry — including the reemergence of screwworm infestations coming up from Mexico, raising alarm for U.S. livestock. On top of that, an increase in tick activity is causing a surge in infestations across farms this season. Despite these concerns, there's good news: the cattle market remains strong, with continued high demand.Turning to the honeybee crisis, Doug reports that bee colonies are down by two-thirds, due to a combination of migratory stress, parasitic threats, and erratic weather — especially recent floods across the U.S. Given the vital role bees play in agriculture, Doug encourages anyone with the interest and ability to consider starting a colony of their own to support pollination and food production. In his “Doug's Opine” segment, Doug revisits his recent conversation with Julia Barton from the Organic Farmers Association (episode: "Empowering Organic Farmers: A Conversation with Julia Barton of the Organic Farmers Association"). He reflects on the challenges surrounding the “organic” label — a term that has been increasingly compromised by government red tape and industrial agriculture interests. Doug shares his strong belief that real organic farming should return to its roots — before chemical farming — and stresses the importance of knowing your farmer. As he says, if your organic food comes from a local farm, it's far more trustworthy than products from big ag brands bearing the same label.

Narcocorridos are narrative songs that paint vivid pictures of drug trafficking, organized crime, and the lives of real or fictional figures in the narcotics world. In this episode, we discuss where this genre fits within regional Mexican music, the ethical concerns it raises, and how it reflects deeper social realities in Mexico. We also take a look at the history of narcocorridos, some of the most iconic songs, and how this music intersects with power, reputation, and even violence.Key Takeaways:Narcocorridos are not just music—they're cultural expressions shaped by Mexico's social and political history. These songs walk a fine line between storytelling and glorifying criminal lifestyles. From “Camelia la Tejana” to “Jefe de Jefes,” narcocorridos remain a powerful (and polarizing) part of Mexican musical identity.Relevant Links And Additional Resources:060 – El Santo De Los Narcos | The Saint Of Narcos218 – La Música De Banda – El Sonido De Sinaloa | Banda Music – The Sound Of SinaloaLevel up your Spanish with our Podcast MembershipGet the full transcript of each episode so you don't miss a wordListen to an extended breakdown section in English going over the most important words and phrasesTest your comprehension with a multiple choice quizIf you enjoy Learn Spanish and Go, please consider subscribing, rating, and reviewing our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or Pandora. What should we make of Trump's latest 35% tariff threat on Canada? Rudyard and Andrew agree that while this is not surprising given who we are dealing with, it's also not unique to Canada, with Europe and Mexico likewise getting hit with a tariff threat as well. We are not dealing with a normal interlocutor, and anybody who talks about Trump being a natural negotiator is not familiar with the trajectory of his career and many bankruptcies. Unfortunately for Mark Carney, the US holds most of the cards in cross border negotiations, and if recent history is any indication, there is no way of guaranteeing that Trump will live up to any treaty he signs. In the meantime, Europe and the Indo-Pacific have begun strengthening their relationships with other trade partners which will cost the US bargaining power in the future. But should Canada - in a similar bid to diversify trade - seek to strengthen business ties with China? And can Trump's tariffs - which have already paid off a portion of the US treasury's deficit - actually work as intended and chip away at America's ballooning debt?
In this episode, we break down trends happening in the cross border space between the U.S. and Mexico. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Rebe Huntman, author of the book My Mother in Havana. Rebe's memoir traces her search to connect with her mother—thirty years after her death—among the gods and saints of Cuba. A former professional Latin and Afro-Cuban dancer and choreographer, for over a decade Rebe directed Chicago's award-winning Danza Viva Center for World Dance, Art & Music and its resident dance company, One World Dance Theater. She collaborates with native artists in Cuba and South America, and has been featured in LATINA Magazine, Chicago Magazine, and the Chicago Tribune, and on Fox and ABC. Rebe's essays, stories, and poems appear or are forthcoming in such places as The Southern Review, The Missouri Review, Parabola, Ninth Letter, The Cincinnati Review, and the PINCH, and have earned her an Ohio Individual Excellence Award as well as fellowships from the Macondo Writers' Conference, Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Ragdale Foundation, PLAYA Residency, Hambidge Center, and Brush Creek Foundation. She holds an MFA in creative nonfiction from The Ohio State University and lives in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and Delaware, Ohio. Find her at www. rebehuntman.com and on Instagram @rebehuntman. In my book review, I stated My Mother in Havana is a profound look at a woman who lost her mother at a young age and continues to grieve for years. It isn't until she goes to Havana that she finally finds peace. I fully expected to learn that Rebe's mother was Cuban - but she's not. However, Rebe's research about mothers and symbols of motherhood led to her Cuba where the Virgin Mary and the Cuban goddess of love, Ochún, are often intertwined. She wanted to understand this connection - and by doing so, she found healing. Rebe started life as a dancer and choreographer, and she shines a beautiful light on Cuban dances and rituals along with their gods and saints. I was mesmerized by her ability to throw off her Western upbringing and fully immerse herself in the culture as she tried to discover what makes a mother, what defines the divine feminine, and what she remembered of her own mother. I loved learning about the Afro-Cuban culture, their spiritual views, and the broader concept of motherhood. I think anyone who is a mother - or has a mother - will enjoy this book. Interview with James McDonald, President & CEO of Kootenay Silver Inc.Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/kootenay-silver-ktn-high-grade-mexican-silver-explorer-and-developerRecording date: 9th July 2025Kootenay Silver (TSXV:KTN) represents a compelling investment opportunity in the emerging silver bull market, combining proven management expertise with high-grade Mexican silver assets positioned for strategic acquisition. The company's recent maiden resource estimate at its flagship Columba project demonstrates institutional-quality assets with significant expansion potential. The 54 million ounce maiden resource at Columba, grading 284 g/t silver, establishes Kootenay Silver among the higher-grade silver developers globally. The resource concentration in three primary vein systems, particularly the D Vein containing over 30 million ounces across 1,200 meters of strike length, provides operational advantages for potential future mining scenarios. Combined with the company's broader portfolio exceeding 300 million ounces across multiple Mexican properties, this scale positions Kootenay Silver as a significant silver platform.Columba's geological setting within a preserved volcanic caldera provides exceptional exploration upside. The minimal surface erosion has preserved the vein system from top to bottom, while drilling has confirmed strong mineralization extending to 540 meters depth with potential for significantly greater vertical extent. The 4-kilometer by 3-kilometer vein system footprint compares favorably to established Mexican silver districts, suggesting district-scale potential.CEO James McDonald's experience co-founding Alamos Gold provides credibility for value creation. The Alamos success story—acquiring 2.2 million ounces for $12.5 million during the gold market bottom and achieving commercial production within six years—demonstrates management's ability to identify and develop undervalued assets. Kootenay Silver employs a similar strategy, advancing discoveries to preliminary economic assessment stage before selling to major mining companies, reducing capital requirements while maintaining upside exposure. The company's $20 million financing enables systematic resource expansion through 50,000 meters of drilling over 2025. The initial 30,000 meters target "low-hanging fruit" by expanding known mineralized zones, providing high-probability success and regular news flow. Management has identified clear milestones, targeting 100 million ounces to attract strategic interest, with serious acquisition discussions typically beginning around 75 million ounces.Kootenay Silver benefits from favorable silver market dynamics as prices break out from multi-year trading ranges. Supply constraints from declining ore grades and limited new discoveries combine with accelerating industrial demand from renewable energy, electric vehicles, and 5G infrastructure. Monetary demand intensifies as central banks maintain expansionary policies and geopolitical tensions drive diversification from traditional assets.Risk-Adjusted ReturnsThe company has de-risked key development factors through established surface access agreements, proximity to major infrastructure, and favorable political developments in Mexico. The drilling-focused strategy requires continued capital access, though the recent financing provides runway through 2025's critical expansion phase.Kootenay Silver offers investors leveraged exposure to silver's emerging bull market through a proven management team advancing high-grade assets toward strategic acquisition. The combination of exceptional resource quality, systematic development approach, and favorable market timing creates multiple pathways for value creation as the company advances toward the scale thresholds that attract major mining company interest.View Kootenay Silver's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/kootenay-silver-incSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Ted is joined by Nishant Batsha, whose second novel, A Bomb Placed Close to the Heart, was published this month by ecco/HarperCollins. He is also the author of Mother Ocean Father Nation (ecco/HarperCollins), which, among other honors, was named one of the best books of 2022 by NPR.Nishant holds a Ph.D. in history from Columbia University, so it's no surprise that his fiction draws heavily on real-life people and events. He describes this latest book as a “socialist, anti-colonial coming-of-age love story set in 1917,” one that is loosely based on a real-life couple, M.N. Roy and Evelyn Trent, who together founded the Communist Party of Mexico before an acrimonious divorce led to Roy basically writing Trent out of the history of the movement they led together. With A Bomb Placed Close to the Heart now out in the world, Nishant is at work on his next book. He and Ted talk about the circuitous route he's taken to get there, including an entire novel set in the present day that he finished writing before realizing he didn't want to deviate from historical fiction.Nishant discusses being a historian who wanted to become a novelist (compared to the other way around) and what that means for the way he approaches his writing. He then shares details about his work in progress, which is told from the perspective of a Civil War veteran who has left society behind to join a Shaker colony in Maine. President Donald Trump's new spending and tax law is set to balloon the budget for immigration and detention enforcement. With an extra $170 billion over the next four years, the government is hoping to hire 10 thousand new Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, build new detention facilities, and otherwise ramp up every aspect of arrests and removals. In fact, under the new spending plan, ICE will become the most well-funded law enforcement agency in the federal government. Garrett Graff is a historian and longtime politics and national security reporter who currently writes the ‘Doomsday Scenario' newsletter. He joins us to talk about why dramatically expanding the federal immigration enforcement budget so quickly is a bad idea. And in headlines: President Trump threatened new tariffs on Mexico and the European Union, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem pushed back on critical reports of her handling of the response to the deadly Texas floods, and the State Department laid off more than 1,000 staffers.Show Notes:Check out Garrett's work – https://tinyurl.com/33p63f8vLong Shadow: The Lingering Questions of 9/11 –https://tinyurl.com/32bdmpnyCall Congress – 202-224-3121Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

Stocks hold steady as tariff uncertainty continues. Our CIO and Chief U.S. Equity Strategist Mike Wilson explains how policy deferrals, earnings resilience and forward guidance are driving the market.Read more insights from Morgan Stanley.----- Transcript -----Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Mike Wilson, Morgan Stanley's CIO and Chief U.S. Equity Strategist. Today on the podcast I'll be discussing why stocks remain so resilient. It's Monday, July 14th at 11:30am in New York. So, let's get after it. Why has the equity market been resilient in the face of new tariff announcements? Well first, the import cost exposure for S&P 500 industries is more limited given the deferrals and exemptions still in place like the USMCA compliant imports from Mexico. Second, the higher tariff rates recently announced on several trading partners are generally not perceived to be the final rates as negotiations progress. I continue to believe these tariffs will ultimately end up looking like a 10 percent consumption tax on imports that generate significant revenue for the Treasury. And finally, many companies pre-stocked inventory before the tariffs were levied and so the higher priced goods have not yet flowed through the cost of goods sold. Furthermore, with the market's tariffs concerns having peaked in early April, the market is looking forward and focused on the data it can measure. On that score, the dramatic v-shaped rebound in earnings revisions breadth for the S&P 500 has been a fundamental tailwind that justifies the equity rally since April in the face of continued trade and macro uncertainty. This gauge is one of our favorites for predicting equity prices and it troughed at -25 percent in mid-April. It's now at +3 percent. The sectors with the most positive earnings revisions breadth relative to the S&P 500 are Financials, Industrials and Software — three sectors we continue to recommend due to this dynamic. The other more recent development helping to support equities is the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill. While this Bill does not provide incremental fiscal spending to support the economy or lower the statutory tax rate, it does lower the cash earnings tax rates for companies that spend heavily on both R&D and Capital Goods. Our Global Tax Team believes we could see cash tax rates fall from 20 percent today back toward the 13 percent level that existed before some of these benefits from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that expired in 2022. This benefit is also likely to jump start what has been an anemic capital spending cycle for corporate America, which could drive both higher GDP and revenue growth for the companies that provide the type of equipment that falls under this category of spending. Meanwhile, the Foreign-Derived Intangible Income is a tax incentive that benefits U.S. companies earning income from foreign markets. It was designed to encourage companies to keep their intellectual property in the U.S. rather than moving it to countries with lower tax rates. This deduction was scheduled to decrease in 2026, which would have raised the effective tax rate by approximately 3 percent. That risk has been eliminated in the Big Beautiful Bill. Finally, the Digital Service Tax imposed on online companies that operate overseas may be reduced. Late last month, Canada announced that it would rescind its Digital Service Tax on the U.S. in anticipation of a mutually beneficial comprehensive trade arrangement with the U.S. This would be a major windfall for online companies and some see the potential for more countries, particularly in Europe, to follow Canada's lead as trade negotiations with the U.S. continue. Bottom line, while uncertainty around tariffs remains high, there are many other positive drivers for earnings growth over the next year that could more than offset any headwinds from these policies. This suggests the recent rally in stocks is justified and that investors may not be as complacent as some are fearing. Thanks for tuning in; I hope you found it informative and useful.
