Everyone has their own personal favorite. The one place in town that had all the cool records. The place you didn't know existed until a friend took you there and you discover music beyond the mainstream. The place where you feel in the know ready to explore everything around you. That place is your local independent record shop. You got your first LP there or you found it in college and go comb the racks every other weekend. Louisville's Ear-X-Tacy was that for residents and passers-through - the place in the 80s and 90s where you could get the cool imports and the college chart heroes like R.E.M. and The Smiths. Not that you couldn't get mainstream or classic albums there, it was just a vibe that made it the cultural center for like-minded rock fans through various locations in the Louisville Highlands. Ear-X-Tacy was the brainchild of John Timmons, a college student who worked in record stores and decided he'd take his record collection and a $500 cash advance on his MasterCharge to chase his rock n roll dreams. He grew Ear-X-Tacy into the hip capital in town where you could search 10,000 square feet of rock, soul, punk, metal, alternative, local, popular and rare racks for hours. The Foo Fighters, Tenacious D and John Mayer would all perform there on their way to bigger gigs and several generations remember Ear-X-Tacy as a special place in their lives. Like so many other record stores, Ear-X-Tacy is gone. However, John keeps the legacy alive with his weekly radio show (cleverly titled Ear-X-Tacy) where he plays the songs that he loved and inspired him to build the store. John also talks about his many community ventures like The Coalition of Independent Music Stores (CIMS), The Louisville Independent Business Alliance, The Association for Independent Music and Keep Louisville Weird. We share stories from the shop over the years, relive some of the biggest moments and thank John for all that he's done for music and for Louisville. This spring, Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien released a beautiful and soul-stirring album called Blue Morpho, and in this episode, he shares with great depth and candor what inspired the album, his approach to recording it, and the transformative self exploration required to make it. One of the elements of the project was his desire to capture sounds at 432 Hz, and you'll hear him explain the idea behind that, right at the beginning of the interview. But from there, we go way back into his history as an artist, to his early childhood listening to Simon & Garfunkel with his mom while she sewed, singing in the boys choir, discovering guitar music and freaking out over bands like The Jam and The Police and The Smiths, and while still a teenager meeting and forming a band with the group of school friends who would become Radiohead. Honestly, this interview is one of those occasions, when I can't believe what an honor it was to hear from an artist whose music has been so important to me personally, and for him to share about the artists that had similar impact on his life. There's an incredible story right near the end of the episode where Ed talks about being on tour with Radiohead in the US in 1995, and having all of their gear stolen. So they took a fateful trip to San Francisco to get some new guitars and things, but they only had one audio cassette to listen to during the road trip, and the music that was on it ended up inspiring some of their approach to OK Computer. You'll have to listen all the way through to find out what was on that tape.

1986 hat die britische Band The Smiths ihr drittes Album "The Queen Is Dead" veröffentlicht. Es zählt mit Blick auf die Chartpositionierungen zu den international erfolgreichsten Alben der Gruppe, neben ihrem Album "Meat Is Murder". "The Queen Is Dead" von The Smiths ist Morrisseys Abrechnung mit dem britischen Königshaus, erklärt Frank König im Meilensteine Podcast. Und es ist gleichzeitig Wegbereiter für den Britpop, der Mitte der 90er die Charts erobern sollte. Das Album "The Queen Is Dead" ist auch der direkte Nachfolger ihres Meilenstein-Albums "Meat Is Murder" aus dem Jahr 1985, von dem wir unter anderem den Hit "How Soon Is Now?" kennen. Neben der genialen Gitarrenarbeit von Johnny Marr, steht auch bei diesem Album die polarisierende Figur Morrissey im Vordergrund. Zum einen mit seinem besonderen Stil und seinen außergewöhnlichen Gesangsmelodien, vor allem aber auch wegen seiner Texte und seinem öffentlichen Auftreten, das oft von Provokation geprägt ist. Was davon ernst gemeint ist und was nicht, ist oft nur sehr schwer auseinanderzuhalten. "Es zieht sich auch durch dieses Album. Auf der einen Seite dieses "Ihr könnt uns alle mal" und auf der anderen, dieses Trotzdem-geliebt-werden-wollen, scheint so immanent zu sein bei ihm", sagt Podcast-Host Frank König über die verschiedenen Signale, die Morrissey aussendet. Auch abseits der Musik hat Morrissey seine Provokationen nach außen getragen und sich und die Band immer so inszeniert, dass sie zu wenig Unterstützung (zum Beispiel durch die Plattenfirma) bekommen hätten und sie eigentlich viel erfolgreicher sein müssten. Zu der Zeit hat die Management-Aufgaben keine Agentur oder ein offizieller Manager übernommen, sondern Gitarrist Johnny Marr zusätzlich zu seiner musikalischen Arbeit. Zum Mangel an öffentlicher Aufmerksamkeit in den 80ern kann noch angefügt werden, dass die Gruppe sich in den 80ern selbst lange dagegen gewehrt hat, Musikvideos zu drehen, was damals das bestimmende Medium gewesen ist, erklärt Podcast Gast und Morrissey-Experte Klaus Biehler. Das erste Musikvideo gab es dann zu dem Song "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" vom Album "The Queen Is Dead".
