Certain people play guitar in a way that is immediately recognizable, no matter the context. Our guest this week on Transmissions, Johnny Marr, is one of those guitarists. As a founding member of legendary indie band The Smiths, as well as a collaborator with groups like The The, The Pretenders, The Cribs, Modest Mouse, and Electronic, his sound is recognizable, a blend of jangle, chime, bite, and attitude.  But this recognizability never comes at the sake of the song. Warsaw, Missouri songwriter Cody Dunning crafts lyrics and melodies that are honest and relatable. Cody reached out to me via email forwarding his latest work; upon a quick listen I knew it was a good fit for The Tasty Brew.   The ability to support songwriting in the Heartland by having songwriters come in and play live on the radio is one of my favorite things about being a broadcaster.  I especially appreciate Cody's tunes honoring his mother and other strong women in his life …. Acknowledging their positivecontributions has been essential as he now leads primarily a lyrical life…foregoing… for now… other more traditional paths to employment.    As is often the case during one of these introductory conversations, the diversity of an artist's origin stories never ceases to amaze me.  They hardly ever align with where the artist ends up or currently resides… in this case Cody's first musical memories being as random as The Smiths and listening to emo music as a kid.  I look forward to following Cody's musical journey.

Ashley Flynn's father, Todd Smith, gave jurors a look at Caleb Flynn's financial position inside the Smith family business—and described the private question he eventually typed into Google after his daughter was killed.Todd testified that Caleb earned $195,000 in 2025 along with a $10,000 tax-free medical reimbursement. He planned to retire and divide the company 50/50 between Ashley and her sister Kayla, while Caleb's earnings as a salesman could rise as company sales increased. Todd also described extra money the Smiths gave the Flynn family through the “GGFM fund” for trips and experiences. He said the Smiths paid for many family vacations.Todd testified that Ashley never spoke negatively about Caleb. After her death, though, he said he began thinking the circumstances looked bad for his son-in-law. He Googled whether “a Christian man” could snap and kill his wife before his wife told him not to go down that road.Captain Tony Smith of Tipp City Police then testified about the investigation. He said the FBI was contacted early, Flynn financial accounts were subpoenaed, DNA was collected from one of the children, and a laptop from the Flynn home was taken into evidence.Captain Smith also said numerous tips came through the tipline and were forwarded to the FBI. He testified that none ultimately produced a lead. Todd Smith, father of murder victim Ashley Flynn, testified about Caleb Flynn's finances, his future inside the family business, and the moment he began wondering whether his son-in-law could have been responsible for Ashley's death.Smith testified that Caleb earned $195,000 from the family company in 2025, plus a $10,000 tax-free medical reimbursement. After Ashley was killed, however, he testified that he thought the situation “didn't look good” for Caleb and searched online, “Can a Christian man snap and kill his wife?” His wife asked him not to go there.Tipp City Police Captain Tony Smith testified about the investigation itself. He said he brought the FBI into the case early, subpoenaed Flynn accounts at Allied Bank and Citibank, collected DNA from one of the children, and took custody of a laptop Todd Smith provided from the Flynn home.Captain Smith also testified that investigators received numerous tips that were passed to the FBI, but none panned out. This week, the Lads complete their "Metal MAY-hem" trifecta by covering the heaviest metal of 'em all: trains. Joining in on the fun is Wallace Dietz and Dan-O Deckelman, who make up the creative engine of the Richmond, VA post-punk locomotive The Melody Chamber. Their self-titled debut (HHBTM Records/Too Good to Be True) landed not only in Brett's Top 5 Albums of 2025, but some of you in the O3L Community also named it as your favorite release of the past year. All of the accolades are very well deserved too - the record sounds like some great lost ‘80s album that was discovered in the dusty racks of a defunct college radio station. It contains 10 songs of post-punk and southern gothic jangle pop that not only evoke bands like The Psychedelic Furs, R.E.M., The Smiths, and The Chameleons, but are of such substantial quality that they stack up favorably against those bands. Although this is The Melody Chamber's first record, Dan-O and Wallace are both veteran musicians who have spent decades in indie bands such as The Silent Boys, The Grain Hoppers, Mudd Helmet, and Rocket 69. Frank Sweeney in conversation with David Eastaugh  https://www.facebook.com/frank.sweeney1 After forming in June 1983, they first played live as a band in August that year, soon attracting the attention of future Creation Records boss Alan McGee, who gave them several gigs at the 'Living Room', but reputedly decided not to sign The June Brides to his new label as it would have been "too obvious". Two Joe Foster-produced 1984 singles on The Pink Label, "In The Rain" and "Every Conversation" saw The June Brides receive much attention, and these two songs appeared frequently on compilation albums from that era. A year later, the mini-album There Are Eight Million Stories... appeared (produced by John O'Neill of That Petrol Emotion) and went straight to number one in the UK Indie Chart, staying there for a month. The album remained in the indie chart for 38 weeks. Disillusioned with Pink, the band moved to Marc Riley's In-Tape label for two further singles - "No Place Like Home" and "This Town" and, in 1986, opened for The Smiths on their Irish tour dates. The June Brides were asked to contribute to the NME's C86 compilation but declined for fear of being pigeonholed.

Accompanied by the French actress Carole Bouquet he embarks on a picaresque journey from the old Selfridge Hotel to West Hollywood, via a park bench in Cavendish Square. Everyone has their own personal favorite. The one place in town that had all the cool records. The place you didn't know existed until a friend took you there and you discover music beyond the mainstream. The place where you feel in the know ready to explore everything around you. That place is your local independent record shop. You got your first LP there or you found it in college and go comb the racks every other weekend. Louisville's Ear-X-Tacy was that for residents and passers-through - the place in the 80s and 90s where you could get the cool imports and the college chart heroes like R.E.M. and The Smiths. Not that you couldn't get mainstream or classic albums there, it was just a vibe that made it the cultural center for like-minded rock fans through various locations in the Louisville Highlands. Ear-X-Tacy was the brainchild of John Timmons, a college student who worked in record stores and decided he'd take his record collection and a $500 cash advance on his MasterCharge to chase his rock n roll dreams. He grew Ear-X-Tacy into the hip capital in town where you could search 10,000 square feet of rock, soul, punk, metal, alternative, local, popular and rare racks for hours. The Foo Fighters, Tenacious D and John Mayer would all perform there on their way to bigger gigs and several generations remember Ear-X-Tacy as a special place in their lives. Like so many other record stores, Ear-X-Tacy is gone. However, John keeps the legacy alive with his weekly radio show (cleverly titled Ear-X-Tacy) where he plays the songs that he loved and inspired him to build the store. John also talks about his many community ventures like The Coalition of Independent Music Stores (CIMS), The Louisville Independent Business Alliance, The Association for Independent Music and Keep Louisville Weird.
