In part II of our suicide series, Jann discusses the two suicide attempts that left her and Shari reeling for answers. While emotionally difficult for both as they re-lived the emotions they experienced; they felt the need to share. Jann highlights the fact that while suicide is a choice, it doesn’t need to be the final choice if we can help others find a glimmer of hope through connection. Despair, pain and guilt are dissected in this vulnerable discussion as both mother and daughter speak from two very different perspectives. Shari and Jann travel the country speaking on trauma and resiliency. More about them and their book, Which Way? can be found at www.traumaspeakers.com

"Which Way are YOU Going?"   This Salvation Meeting - the 35th in the series I have produced for Fortress Radio since the Covid-19 Pandemic struck in March 2020 - is all about walking our life's pathways with Jesus.Do you walk with Him?  Talk with Him? There are many times when it is difficult for all of us - and many of us have been directly affected by the virus, of course.Rest assured, that whatever might happen to us here on Earth we, as Christians, are always promised a joyous eternity in Heaven with our Lord and Saviour. Some parts of the meeting are based on some writing I encountered earlier in the week by Commissioner Harry Read - and we also hear his lovely song 'Become Aware of Him'.The band piece is an all-time classic, Ray Steadman-Allen's 'In Quiet Pastures' and some of the songs from that piece are either sung in the service or referenced in my talk.Other music is provided by groups including Wood Green Singing Company, the International Staff Band and Songsters, the Canadian Staff Band, The Melbourne Veterans Band - and there is a lovely solo from Canadian Salvationist Dayna Curtis.  All that - and an excerpt from a much-loved Gowans/Larsson musical.God bless you all - and thank you for listening.Marc

On day 60 something of quarantine to stop the spread of the Coronavirus, Shari and Jann discuss grief and the importance of allowing ourselves to “feel”. In the busyness of our lives, we often distract ourselves from feeling anything that makes us uncomfortable and the problem with that is the inevitable mental, emotional and physical ramifications that befall. During this time, we need to be especially kind and nurturing to ourselves and one way to do that is to allow the feelings to come over us, embrace them and then let them go. Shari and Jann travel the country (when not quarantined), speaking on their book, Which Way?, mental health issues and the power of our stories.

In this podcast, we welcome our favorite person on the planet, Hunter! We discuss the trauma and the beauty that is passed from one generation to the next and the responsibility we all have in talking about it, acknowledging it and making decisions about what we will pass along. In this authentic conversation, all 3 generations talk about how they moved past what they were taught and decided Which Way? they would move forward. What this family hopes to show is that despite transgressions, mess-ups and blunders, when there is love, the rest falls into place. Hunter is co-owner of Beyond Blue Media (BeyondBlueMedia.com) and co-leads the “After Party”, a college ministry that meets on Monday evenings at 7:00pm at Everyday Joes in Fort Collins. Barry Zworestine (In His Own Words): I was born in Southern Rhodesia (in what is now Zimbabwe) in 1953. After a fairly uneventful schooling in which I focused more on sports than on academics, I went to university in South Africa, where I spent several years training in the field of education. In 1976 I returned to Rhodesia to comply with national service requirements and was involved in the Rhodesian Bush War. On leaving the war in 1977, I spent a number of years living and working in South Africa before emigrating to Australia, where I lived for several years before settling in England for a brief period of time. After unsuccessfully attempting to mountain bike from Great Britain to Israel in 1984, I flew there instead and spent four years developing the British Council English Language Centre. While in Israel I developed a passion for marathon running, which then extended to ultra-marathon running after I returned to South Africa to qualify as a clinical psychologist.  I returned to Australia in 2000, where I have remained ever since. In 2002, given my military experience and psychological qualifications, I was accepted as a contractor with a veteran organisation; I still continue with this work today. I also continue to run short distances and am passionate about music. I play the African drum, American Indian flute and the Australian didgeridoo. In my most recent book, “Which Way is your Warrior facing” I dress the complex nature of transitioning to Civilian territory. I have also combined Book One “Which Way is Your Claymore Facing” and set the book up as a free PDF download from my website. I have encapsulated many years of conversations and learning with the extraordinary men and women I have sat with in my practice over the years, from regular to special forces soldiers. I hope that some of what I have written will support you and others around you on your journey towards healing. As I have noted, this is not a researched and academic text, and as such it may very well have its failings and limitations. Instead, this book is based on years of conversations with veterans and their partners and children. It is based on my experiences and challenges as a veteran and a man. It embodies years of exposure to neuroscience principles and brain- and body-based wisdom. I have tried to express this in simple, accessible writing and to draw on military operational terms to explain relevant concepts and lessons. I've also drawn on my own life experience while navigating my own pathway through a variety of life challenges.

We felt like there is enough about that.In this talk, your hosts, Jann and Shari discuss where we think we are falling down as a country and the little things we can do to impact the tragic way our world has shifted. We feel strongly that one person won’t change the dynamic in our world but a lot of people collectively making a decision to change the way they interact with others...will. We feel that kindness disarms rage and if we stop ignoring signs that are right in front of us the tide will begin to turn in our world.Jann and Shari are authors of Which Way? and travel the country speaking on trauma, its impact on our relationships and how we can live our lives in a resilient way. In Which Way?... Mother and daughter tell parallel stories about trauma and its impact on the generations that follow. Jann Simmons’ story is a heart-wrenching account of an orphaned child who suffered brutality at the hands of her mother, as well as many others. As an adult, Jann’s mind was closed to the horrors of her abuse, betrayal, and abandonment until the day they all came flooding back to her conscious mind. That awareness began a 40-year transformation from a passive victim to resilient warrior. As a young teen, Shari struggled to make sense of her mother’s pain, but as a career mental-health therapist, she began to understand her mother’s journey and learn how trauma affects the brain. She offers strategies in this book for those suffering from past or present trauma or for those who love someone who is suffering. Both women tell their stories and drive home the fact that the choices we make can lead to self-hatred and resentment or to a life of courage, healing and beauty.Which Way? is an unforgettable story of love and transformation that will resonate with mothers, daughters, trauma survivors, those who love them and those who’ve made a career out of helping them heal.

Which Way to the Dawn of Speech?      (click for link to PowerPoint)Reanalyzing half a century of debates and data in light of speech scienceLouis-Jean Boë  & Thomas R. Sawallis 1 GIPSA-lab, CNRS, Grenoble Alpes University, France2 New College, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, USAIn the weeks around New Years, 2017, two complementary articles discussing speech evolution appeared in respected general science journals: Fitch et al., 2016, in Science Advances and Boë et al., 2017, in PLOSOne. These two articles announced the final failure of a theory that had been widely propagated and broadly accepted for half a century, despite numerous critiques and partial falsifications: the laryngeal descent theory (LDT) of Lieberman and colleagues (Lieberman, 1968; Lieberman et al., 1969; Lieberman & Crelin, 1971). Taken together, those studies represented – and continue to represent – an extremely powerful research paradigm, drawn directly from the core understanding of speech science, that the acoustic speech signal transmits articulatory information. Specifically the authors: (i) used recorded calls of live primates to make anatomical inferences about vocal tracts (VTs), (ii) used either VT casts of extant primates or reconstructions of fossil species’ VTs to make acoustic inferences, and (iii) by appropriate comparisons of anatomy and acoustics, drew conclusions regarding both the ontogeny and the phylogeny of speech.Their conclusions, later termed LDT, were: that fully human speech, in particular the full human vowel inventory, was made possible by the large pharyngeal cavity resulting from laryngeal descent, which occurs over the lifespan of anatomically modern Homo sapiens (AMHS) only; that living primates, pre-modern humans (including Neanderthals), and modern human toddlers were restricted to schwa-like vowels; and that speech could only have developed after the emergence of AMHS some 200,000 years ago, and language more recently still.Controversy in speech evolution research is inevitable, due to lack of fossil evidence, difficulty of experimental design and data collection, absence of general paradigms, and especially, the need for multidisciplinary cooperation among otherwise compartmentalized fields. We will give some taste of that controversy as we trace 3 decades of difficult work showing that a large pharynx from laryngeal descent is not necessary to produce the full inventory of vowels. Theoretical arguments claimed that infants, Neanderthals, and primates were anatomically able to produce contrasting vowels, and recorded evidence accumulated that infants could as well, and finally, the articles noted above presented MRIs of macaque VTs and especially recorded calls from baboons showing both produce contrasting vowels, all without the large pharynx required by LDT. If we think of this evidence as in some sense “fossils” of early speech emergence, this pushes the “dawn of speech” 100 times further back in our history, to our last common ancestor with old world monkeys, over 20 million years ago.We will present new evidence we have recently developed further reinforcing that claim, and will outline certain implications for language evolution theory & research more generally.

Listen in as Geeta talks about why she wanted to make a “kick ass” story about women, gender justice and how little things make a big difference.Film SynopsisDocumentarians Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (the Academy Award-winning Saving Face) and Geeta Gandbhirfollow the stories of three Bangladeshi policewomen who served with the UN peacekeeping mission to Haiti in the aftermath of the devastating 2010 earthquake. The role of United Nations peacekeepers is a true “mission impossible,” dropping soldiers who literally don’t speak each other’s languages into foreign countries rife with chaos and violence. Anything that goes wrong can become an international incident. Good luck.A Journey of a Thousand Miles: Peacekeepers acquaints us with the personal side of such a mission, focusing on five Muslim policewomen from Dhaka, Bangladesh who are part of a unit sent to maintain peace in the wake of Haiti’s devastating 2010 earthquake. Their training is inadequate, to say the least. Adding to the volatile situation are the local perceptions that the UN has overstayed its welcome, and that foreign troops are responsible for the cholera epidemic that has been killing Haitians by the thousands since the earthquake.Academy Award winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Saving Face) teams with filmmaker Geeta Gandbhir to follow the peacekeeping unit not just over the course of the year-long mission, but also through their return home, where they face fresh challenges of reintegration. Many of the women are the primary earners in their families, but they still encounter opposition from husbands and parents over leaving home for work. As the film takes us deeper into their lives, we come to feel the emotional toll of a risky and gruelling year abroad, away from children and loved ones.Muslim women are often kept at a distance in the Western media. This film offers a rare and up-close look as they make the best of a difficult situation, with compassion and humour, while the mission expands their sense of what’s possible.BiographyGeeta Gandbhir has been nominated for three Emmy Awards and has won two. Her films have been nominated twice for the Academy Award, winning once, and have also won three Peabody Awards. She most recently co-directed and edited the film “Remembering the Artist Robert DeNiro Senior” for HBO and produced and edited “Whoopi Goldberg Presents Moms Mabley” for HBO, which was just nominated for an Emmy. Additional notable works include; “When the Levees Broke,” “By the People: The Election of Barack Obama,” “Music By Prudence,” “Budrus,” “If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise,” and “God is the Bigger Elvis” which was nominated for the 2012 Academy Awards. Recently her film, “Which Way is the Frontline From Here?” with author and Academy Award nominated director Sebastian Junger has been nominated for the News and Doc Emmys..
