With Amy reporting from Cannes, Paul welcomes Jorma Taccone for a Dealer's Choice episode on Die Hard 2, the explosive sequel that takes John McClane to a snowbound airport under siege. Together they make the case for one of action cinema's most underrated follow-ups, celebrating Bruce Willis's swagger, Renny Harlin's direction, and the sequel's knack for escalating the stakes without losing sight of character. They also dive into the film's practical effects, memorable villains, and why Die Hard 2 remains a textbook example of how to go bigger without breaking what made the original work. OUR MAN FLINT, the 1966 spy spoof that shook Hollywood, is back under the microscope. Dan and Tom from Cracking the Code of Spy Movies decode this James Coburn classic in their signature style. Released just weeks after THUNDERBALL, this movie punched well above its weight. It spoofed James Bond, "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.", and even drew from vaudeville comedy traditions. The movie's story follows Flint, a brilliant ex-agent pulled back to stop mad scientists bent on world domination through weather control. Highlighted themes in this episode: ·       James Coburn's portrayal of Derek Flint ·       Jerry Goldsmith's iconic score, which blends jazz, electronics, and exotica. He's ahead of his time. Some critics called this score better than anything from the Bond series. ·       ZOWIE, GALAXY, and SPECTRE: the movie directly mocks Bond's spy-agency formula with wit and precision. ·       Austin Powers' DNA traces directly back here — from the harem of women to the multifunction lighter. ·       Vaudeville roots: We uncover surprising comedy traditions hidden in the movie's structure Dan and Tom explore the movie's influences — from Fritz Lang's 1929 Spies to Sherlock Holmes — and trace its legacy through DIE HARD, KINGSMAN, AUSTIN POWERS, and beyond. Whether you're a die-hard spy movie fan or new to the genre, this episode will make you see Flint in a whole new way. This movie was the predecessor to IN LIKE FLINT. Tell us what you think of our decoding of OUR MAN FLINT Have you seen OUR MAN FLINT?  If so, what are your thoughts?  What spoofs did we miss?  If you haven't seen it, does our decoding session make you want to watch it? Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

This week, Shat The Movies heads to Chicago for The Negotiator, the 1998 hostage thriller that asks a simple question: What happens when the best hostage negotiator in the city takes hostages of his own? Starring Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey in a battle of wits, the film turns a police corruption investigation into a tense, talk-heavy showdown filled with double-crosses, suspicious cops, and enough flashbangs to outfit a small army. Gene and Big D revisit a late-'90s thriller that feels like a mashup of Die Hard, The Fugitive, and a Chicago tourism commercial gone horribly wrong. The guys debate whether Danny Roman's plan is brilliant or completely insane, marvel at the film's stacked supporting cast, and discuss why every Chicago movie seems to feature cops making catastrophically bad decisions. Along the way, they break down David Morse's hard-nosed performance, the film's escalating paranoia, and the rare action movie that wins battles with conversation instead of gunfire. Is The Negotiator an underrated thriller from the golden age of adult action movies, or a wildly implausible conspiracy held together by charisma, shouting, and Samuel L. Jackson's ability to dominate every room he's in? Full movie info below When a respected Chicago police hostage negotiator is framed for corruption and murder, he seizes a government office and takes hostages in a desperate attempt to uncover the real conspiracy. With the city closing in, he turns to another elite negotiator to help expose the truth before time runs out. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. We cover lots of topics, delving into stealth and AI systems, objectives and their communication, and other thoughts. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Another mission Issues covered: whether it was designed for a controller, graphic fidelity holding up, the fixed function shading pipeline, the crossover between audio and visual meters, what's going on with the light meter, ambient noise affecting how quickly you can move, adjusting eyesight, layering mechanics into a mini-game, sprinklers everywhere, hose extraction, trip lasers, using a body as a laser avoider, a key that isn't a key, interrogation mechanics, consequences for not interrogating, multiple paths to information, forgetting the vision modes, the marketing targets for particular consoles, dynamic mission objectives, motivating spaces through pattern language, having to mark up the world to tell you what's important, a digression into climbing anywhere, "what map?," not wasting space, clockwork levels, a globetrotting set of ops vs single-location games, Brett has a good point, contrasting flavors, just jumping in and having the briefings paper over travel, the attract mode, benefitting pacing. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: XBOX, Pulp Fiction (obliquely), PlayStation 3, Clint Hocking, NOLF 2, Max Payne, Metal Gear (series), Three Men and a Baby, Poltergeist, Eternal Darkness, Mission: Impossible (series), Entrapment, Sean Connery, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Dishonored, Prey, Hitman, Die Hard, Assassin's Creed, Crazy Climber, Cairn, Jusant, Hideo Kojima, Reacher (series), The Gray Man (series), The Hunt for Red October, Quiller (series), Shadowlord-72, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Next time: More TCSCCT! Errata: Apparently there were in fact multiple shader units on the original Xbox, and supported Pixel/Vertex 1.1 shaders. We regret the error. (Fixed function was still a thing, though, I'm just not remembering the details correctly.) Twitch: timlongojr and twinsunscorp YouTube Discord DevGameClub@gmail.com

The precision, patience, and technical know how needed to sell action filmmaking is underrated and under appreciated. Action directors like Michael Curtiz, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, George Miller, John McTiernan, even. . .Michael Bay get treated differently than art house canonically revered moviemakers. Yet what is accomplished in action hits like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Aliens, Die Hard, Mad Max Fury Road, even Bad Boys II is a cinematic miracle. Very carefully planned illusion becomes reality. Secret Movie Club founder.programmer Craig Hammill takes a filmmaking-centric approach to talk about the technical tools and tricks used to sell stunts, sequences, cinematic danger.

Myopia: Defend Your Childhood - A Nostalgic Movies Podcast

This week, we head to the crime-ridden dystopia of Detroit where corporations rule, criminals laugh like maniacs, and the solution to urban decay is… a heavily armed cyborg cop with excellent posture. Join Nic, Matthew, Keiko, Nur, and Alex as they revisit RoboCop (1987), Paul Verhoeven's ultraviolent, razor-sharp satire that somehow convinced an entire generation of kids that this was appropriate viewing. We're asking the important questions: Is this actually one of the smartest sci-fi films ever made… or just an excuse for explosive squibs and corporate slimeballs? Why did we all think ED-209 was just a normal workplace hazard? Does RoboCop count as a superhero, a horror monster, or the world's saddest HR case study? And how did this movie spawn toys, cartoons, and birthday parties? Along the way, we break down the film's biting commentary on privatization, media culture, and late-stage capitalism—while also appreciating just how completely unhinged it gets. It's part Blade Runner, part Die Hard, and part “what if the evening news was written by lunatics?” Does RoboCop (1987) hold up as a masterpiece of satire, or were our childhood brains just too distracted by explosions to notice the deeper themes? Dead or alive, you're listening to this episode. Want to pick a movie we do an episode on and record a special commentary just for you? Purchase something from our wish list!  We are riffers on Cineprov! Check us out!! How will RoboCop (1987) hold up? "You are a fool, Sinister! The most powerful mutants on Earth shall hunt you down to see Charles Xavier avenged!"   And with this 2-part season finale, another 13 episodes of X-Men: The Animated Series are in the books! On paper, it's a pretty straightforward, conventional affair, serving as a wrap-up to Professor Xavier and Magneto's exile in the Savage Land and a bookend to the season opener starring Mr. Sinister as the show's new major villain. There's a bit of questionable storytelling as well, on the basis of some circular login at its core. Sinister lured Magneto and Xavier to the Savage Land, and in turn used the latter to bait the X-Men into his clutches as well. Which would be fine enough (albeit convoluted), if not for the fact that he already successfully captured Cyclops and Jean Grey in the season premiere and dismissed the other X-Men as beneath his care or attention. And while his motives could have evolved, the plan was already in motion to send the Professor and Magneto off to the Savage Land from the first episode of the season.   Nevertheless, this finale patches over what should be a gaping plot hole through its sheer energy and commitment. What it does do well, it does very, VERY well. As a testament to the show's effectiveness in endearing its cast to the audience, several characters get big moments throughout. From Cyclops making good on his earlier threat to Sinister, to Wolverine's "Die Hard" meets "Jurassic Park" solo run through the Savage Land, to Morph's redemption after a return from (near) death, it's an impressive undertaking that all of this lands in an already stacked pair of episodes. Perhaps most memorable is Gambit and Rogue's declaration of love under less than ideal circumstances. Their first kiss manages to be powerful and convincing thanks to two seasons worth of a slow burn love story growing from mild flirtation to genuine affection, with our understanding of both characters informed by revelations about their tumultuous backstories. The climax also delivers one of the show's most fist-pumping "beat the bad guys to the beat of the theme song" action sequences, a feature that had admittedly been lacking throughout the season. Following this, there are few scenes more cathartic than seeing Sinister literally blown apart and scattered to the four winds. Even if it all doesn't quite hang together story-wise, that's pretty consistent with the comics of the era from which the season draws so much of its inspiration.   At the end of the day, this finale is here to have a good time while juggling a bevy of captivating characters in a colorful setting. Although the season as a whole is less ambitious structurally than its predecessor, with its only dedicated two-parters in the beginning, middle, and end, you'd never know it thanks to the Savage Land adventure being dispersed in the form of brief vignettes to create a sense of cohesion and serialization across the standalone episodes. It's a stroke of brilliance that avoids the production and scheduling problems of the first season, allowing the true ambition to shine in the depth of character writing. The Saturday morning sensation has now done seemingly the impossible: topping itself in terms of sophistication and quality, while becoming a well-oiled machine in the process. Where could it possibly go next??

It's Die Hard in Mother Russia! Well pals, it's finally here…the final episode! We started with the original DIE HARD, we've covered 80 subsequent films that were influenced by it in some way, and so it only seems fitting to booked this project with the fifth and final DIE HARD film that we'll be covering in this episode. But…we're also going a step further than that. Because to honor the culmination of the show we have a very special guest…a multi-talented director, producer and screenwriter, whose extensive credits include such films as 48 HRS, COMMANDO, THE RUNNING MAN, RICOCHET, DIE HARD 2 and of course the original DIE HARD…Mr. Steven E De Souza!Aging New York cop John McClane travels to Russia in search of his estranged son Jack (Jai Courtenay) only to discover that Jack is entangled with a complex espionage plot, wherein corrupt politician Viktor Chagarin (Sergei Koslesnikov) plains to railroad imprisoned billionaire and whistleblower Yuri Komarov (Sebastian Koch) in a rigged trial, unless Komarov turns over a mysterious file. When Komarov refuses to give up said file, the courthouse is attacked and blown up by well-armed mercenaries. Jack escapes with Komarov in tow, only to encounter his dad – John McClane himself - during the apparent extraction attempt, which is soon revealed to be a clandestine CIA operation. With the delicate mission now in jeopardy, father and son must team up to fight the bad guys who are now after them both, working through their estrangement issues in the process. The guys talk about the original DIE HARD film, the series as a whole, and where and how it may have gone astray as a franchise. Steven provides his unique opinions about what makes a good sequel versus a bad one, and regales the boys with stories of his work on DIE HARD and DIE HARD 2. Their wide-ranging discussion encompasses all manner of topics relating to the DIE HARD films, his career as a whole, and action cinema in general. As always the show ends with the final editions of the Die Hard Oscars and the Double Jeopardy Trivia Quiz, before the boys sign off with an emotional mailbag section, where they read a variety of the best letters sent in by listeners of the show, from all around the world.TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SQ0IzY0YrYAt the time of release, A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV/iTunes, YouTube, Fandango and all the usual platforms! In the process of investigating a triple homicide in the towering high-rise building known as Peach Trees, the two Judges incur the wrath of the culprit – ferocious and powerful local gangster MaMa (Lena Headey) – who seals off the building and declares war on the pair of them, meaning that the two vastly outnumbered Judges must use all their skills and guile to survive an onslaught of attacks from the building's seemingly infinite number of marauding criminals. The boys put this awesome movie in its full context by discussing the entire history of the Dredd character and it's life across popular culture (including the 1995 Stallone movie version). They go deep on this icon figure's complex appeal, and what this adaptation got so right, and what the distributors got so wrong (remember the 3-D craze?! Ah…good times) in translating this challenging source material to the silver screen at the second attempt. The guys hand out awards in a hotly contested edition of the ‘Die Hard Oscars' and wrap things up with a challenging edition of the ‘Double Jeopardy' Trivia Quiz. But will Liam pass or fail?! TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqqgrUna28wAt the time of release, DREDD is streaming on Tubi and Vix and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV/iTunes, YouTube, Fandango and all the usual platforms! Buckle up and check your ammo, because the blood is about to hit the fan! This week on The Filmlosophers, Hosts Eddie and Spencer are joined by the ever-glorious Intern Manager/Managing Intern Amy for a high-speed, high-octane ride through one of the year's most relentless cinematic thrill rides. But before the crew gets covered in the red stuff, Host Eddie steps up to the whiteboard to completely shatter everyone's childhoods with a brand-new installment of "Conspiracy Theory." This week, Eddie connects the dots between Ghostbusters, Die Hard, and Family Matters to pitch the incredibly dark and deeply psychological "Carl Winslow Theory." He takes the studio on a twisted journey, breaking down the mind-bending hypothesis of how Sgt. Al Powell's cinematic traumas caused a complete mental break, trapping him in a sitcom fantasy world haunted by a guilt-fueled poltergeist named Steve Urkel. Once the crew recovers from that massive television revelation, they turn their sights to the fast-paced, visceral madness of Kirill Sokolov's They Will Kill You. The team gushes (no pun intended) over how the director has crafted an absolute love letter to classic, kinetic cinema. They praise the film as the ultimate vehicle to showcase the sheer, unbridled talent of lead actress Zazie Beetz, who delivers an absolute powerhouse performance. Along the way, the trio breaks down Sokolov's brilliant, blood-soaked homages to the legendary styles of iconic filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, Park Chan-wook, and Sam Raimi. It's an episode full of mind-bending theories, undeniable star power, and cinematic bloodshed!

Are you busy all day but never finishing the work that actually matters? What if the problem isn't discipline — it's that you've never learned how to enter a flow state on demand? Steven Puri joins Nick Urban to break down the science and practice of flow states. Steven shares the exact protocol he built after two decades in Hollywood and tech: how music at 60-90 BPM triggers focus, why rain sounds outperformed $100K of custom compositions, and the morning intention habit he calls the single highest-ROI practice for productivity. Meet our guest Steven Puri is the Founder and CEO of The Sukha Company, a flow state productivity platform helping knowledge workers find their focus and do their best work. Before building Sukha, Steven served as VP at 20th Century Fox running the Die Hard and Wolverine franchises, EVP at DreamWorks Pictures for Kurtzman-Orci Productions (Star Trek, Transformers), and produced CGI for 14 films including Independence Day. He sold his first tech company, Centropolis Effects, at age 28. Steven lives in Austin, TX. It's Die Hard in a tower block! Yep things really are coming full circle now as this time the Die Hard-esque mayhem takes place in…a tall building…as we discuss Gareth Evans' furiously intense game-changer THE RAID (aka THE RAID: REDEMPTION) with special guest Jason Kleeburg!Rama (Iko Uwais) is a young police officer in the Mobile Brigade Corps, Indonesia's spec-ops paramilitary tactical unit. Rama is part of an small MBC squad who are tasked with assaulting an impenetrable Jakarta slum ruled by the notorious gangster Tama Riyadi (Ray Sahetapy). The goal is to extract and arrest Tama, but the bungled operation quickly goes to hell, and soon Rama and what's left of his unit find themselves trapped inside the building, facing overwhelming opposition from Tama's seemingly endless hordes of henchmen. So, are the DHOAB boys ready for a bit of the old ultraviolence? Well, opinions vary. The lads fiercely debate this divisive film's merits…just like many of the prominent critics did at the time of its release. Is this, as Jason suggests, simply one of the best fight films ever made? Or is it, as Roger Ebert argued, “a visualized video game that spares the audience the inconvenience of playing it”? Perhaps it's both, and the guys chew it all over, discussing its relevance as a paradigm-shifter for the entire action genre, its influences (and influence) across Asian, American, and indeed world cinema, and its potency, originality, and inventiveness with no recognizable stars, a fixed location, and an extremely limited budget. As always the fellas wrap things up with the Die Hard Oscars, followed by the Double Jeopardy Trivia Quiz…while still searching valiantly for the titular “redemption”! Raid Riders rise up!
