Before convicts were shipped to Australia, they rotted aboard decommissioned warships anchored in the Thames — floating dungeons so brutal that a condemned man called them "a college of villainy" where every prisoner graduated "a master of arts in scoundrelism."IN THIS EPISODE: It was in 1975 when the first skull of what was believed to be Bigfoot was found. But the owner of the skull hadn't been dead too long, for the local people said they remembered the creature before it died. And even more shocking – they personally knew some of its descendants – a cross-breeding of Bigfoot and human beings! (Villagers Remember Descendants of Bigfoot) *** A young woman falls unconscious and awakes with a fantastical story about fairies kissing her, how she was treated like a princess by them, and falling in love with one of the fairy men. While you might say it was just a fanciful dream, how do you explain that this girl also woke up with clairvoyant abilities? (The Fairies and Anne Jeffries) *** On 15 July 1910 the Sheffield Evening Telegraph recorded the anniversaries of the day. One particular entry was this: “Prison hulks first seen on the Thames…1776”. But what were the prison hulks, and what was life like on board these ‘floating hells,' as they came to be known? (Floating Hells) ***Depending on whether or not you want to get the scare of your life, you will either want to, or not want to honk your car's horn three times on Burnt Mill Road in the Pine Barrens area of New Jersey. If you do, you risk an encounter with the Atco Ghost. (The Atco Ghost Legend of New Jersey) *** Archaeologists excavating the tomb of an ancient Egyptian queen just discovered something chilling… a 13-foot long scroll – a lost chapter from Egypt's “Book of the Dead”. (Queen Nearit's Book of the Dead) *** Feeling the Lord Ganesha wanted milk, a man ran to get some and placed it before the elephant headed statue in a temple near his home. Then it happened… the milk disappeared as if the statue had consumed it. And then the same thing happened to others… and others. In this episode Natalie Queiroz, MBE joins Laura for an important and emotional update.  Natalie shares the latest development in her case - that Raja's open-prison status has been revoked -for now- and they dive deep into the tireless campaign Laura and Natalie are working on to stop domestic abusers and stalkers from being eligible for early open-prison transfer. The change in Raja's status is a critical step forward, but as Natalie and Laura discuss, the relief is short-lived. The system's lack of clarity, inconsistent assessments, and ongoing failures leave victims trapped in cycles of anxiety, retraumatisation, and fear. Together, they explore the emotional and psychological toll of a system that overlooks intent to murder, and the continued danger of coercive controllers, why domestic abusers, coercive controllers and stalkers must be exempt from early open-prison transfer, along with the urgent need for specialised training for offender managers and probation officers and  implications for victims' safety, justice, and reform. Please take action:Listen, share, and amplify, and write to Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy and call for domestic abusers and stalkers to be excluded from early transfer to open prison. Your voice matters -together, we can drive change and save lives. Trigger warning: This is a tough listen but an important one. This one comes to us from the California Institution for Women. This is a piece that was scheduled to air a few weeks ago, but it was only after our show was broadcast that we realized we had aired the wrong story. So today we bring this piece from Uncuffed producer Haena Worthing. When she was first incarcerated, in the county jail, she realized she would no longer have access to most of what she called "pretty girl things” -  like makeup and nail polish. But her experience with incarceration changed how she thinks about beauty.

The hosts explore the glaring double standard: why a male streamer doing the exact same thing would be instantly canceled, de-platformed, and possibly charged, while Nina received only short bans and mocked the backlash. A raw, unfiltered conversation about consent, weaponized allegations, male victims, puritanical overreach, and whether “just a prank” content has finally crossed the line in 2025's hyper-sensitive climate. Tom Green gained notoriety for appearing on television with his plural family, which led to Utah prosecuting him after discovering one wife was “very underage,” resulting in his conviction for child polygamy and welfare fraud, or child rape according to one account, and a prison sentence https://youtu.be/KkQlU3KVllM Don't miss our other conversations with Jacob: https://gospeltangents.com/people/jacob-vidrine Copyright © 2025 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Tom Green: Polygamy, Prison, & Quest for Community Tom Green, a controversial figure in Mormon fundamentalism, was a key claimant to the succession of Ross LeBaron, leader of the Church of the Firstborn. Green stuck with LeBaron until his death in 1996. On his deathbed, LeBaron reportedly did not name a clear successor but charged both Tom Green and Jerry Barlow to carry on his work. Green leveraged this instruction, claiming he had received higher temple ordinances from Ross, thereby being “anointed and appointed”. Green briefly formed a group spanning the late 1990s into the early 2000s, attempting to unite Ross's followers under his leadership. Green achieved notoriety by making numerous radio and television appearances about polygamy, frequently showcasing his plural family. Tom Green’s Prison Sentence However, his public profile led to his downfall when it was discovered that one of his wives was underage. The state of Utah prosecuted him for child polygamy and welfare fraud, seemingly intending to “make an example of him,” particularly because of his media exposure. Green was convicted in 2002 of child rape and served a prison sentence, which lasted five years. He was released on parole on August 7, 2007. After his incarceration, his group largely fell apart. Attempts at Succession Tom Green sought community, particularly as his children grew and needed partners for marriage. He decided to join the Kingston Group, viewing them as a successful example of a united order and plural marriage, noting their economic success in business despite negative press. He maintained, however, that he never recanted the authority he had received from Ross LeBaron. Green remained on parole for at least 14 years before dying from COVID-19 at age 72 on February 28, 2021. Green represents one of several factions that emerged after LeBaron's death, alongside the independents and the group led by Fred Collier. LeBaron’s mission centered on ordaining patriarchs and establishing a patriarchal pattern, an effort that continues today through independent groups and men who trace their authority back to Ross and Tom Green. Fred Collier, another key figure who worked closely with Ross (the religious innovator) as the one who “wrote it up” and added stability through systematization, also claimed succession after separating from Ross in 1983. Tom was one of the best known polygamists in the early 2000’s due to his quest for publicity. It is likely the reason that other fundamentalists avoid publicity, as they see that it often brings more trouble than it is worth.

Bryan Kohberger spent years studying how violent offenders think, act, and survive behind bars. He researched criminal minds, rigid behavior patterns, and psychological survival strategies. And yet now, just months into four consecutive life sentences, the reporting coming out of the Idaho Maximum Security Institution paints a very different picture — not of a mastermind adapting to prison life, but of a man unraveling under the weight of basic reality. Tonight, we break down the flood of grievances, appeals, and handwritten complaints Kohberger has reportedly fired off since arriving on J-Block — one of the most controlled, restrictive tiers in the entire facility. From claims of minute-by-minute verbal threats, to disputes over vegan meal trays, to frustration with the JPay system, to repeated attempts to transfer to a quieter housing unit, Kohberger appears to be hitting every pressure point of incarceration without understanding the culture of the world he now lives in. We also look at what former detectives, prison consultants, and correctional insiders are saying about his behavior — why they believe he's making himself more of a target, why the inmates are taunting him through the vents around the clock, why his reactions are being described as “a jailhouse Karen,” and what this tells us about the psychology that drove him before the murders. And yes — we talk about the now-verified leaked prison footage posted online by a former corrections officer. The Idaho Department of Correction confirmed the video is real. That officer is gone. But the consequences of that leak, and the environment Kohberger sits in right now, are far from over. This episode is also a reminder of the four young lives lost: Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. Four futures taken. Four families forever changed. Jeremy Painkin, former president of the Allen Firefighters Association, was sentenced Wednesday to 13 months in federal prison for wire fraud, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Texas announced. In other news, Texas can use its newly-drawn congressional map in next year's elections, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday, reversing a lower court ruling and dealing a victory to President Donald Trump's hopes of keeping control of Congress in the midterm elections; The ramp connecting southbound Dallas North Tollway to southbound Interstate 35E in Dallas, near Oak Lawn, will be closed for routine maintenance, according to a traffic advisory from North Texas Tollway Authority. Nightly closures starting at 10 PM began Monday and will continue through Saturday. Additional closures are planned in the Celina and Prosper areas starting this evening for construction work that's part of the Dallas North Tollway Phase 4A project. All lanes of east- and westbound Frontier Parkway between north- and southbound Dallas Parkway will be closed overnight Thursday through Saturday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. The closures are needed for deck work. An overnight closure is planned for east- and westbound Addison Airport Toll Tunnel for routine maintenance. The advisory said the AATT will be closed to traffic starting tonight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.; And the Dallas Cowboys playoff hopes took a big hit last night after a 44-30 loss on the road at Detroit. According to the Athletic, the Cowboys now have less than a 10% chance of making the playoffs. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

And a man who now sits in isolation filing complaints about bananas while serving the rest of his natural life. Hidden Killers goes deep into the reporting, the psychology, and the cracks forming inside Kohberger's carefully constructed persona. What happens when your worst fear becomes your reality… and somehow becomes the launchpad for a popcorn empire? In this powerful episode of Nightmare Success In and Out, Brent Cassity sits down with Emily O'Brien, founder of Comeback Snacks, to unpack how a honors grad from Canada went from international development and corporate sales… to being groomed by a boyfriend, caught smuggling cocaine back from St. Lucia, and sentenced to four years in a Canadian prison.Emily shares the raw details of how quickly life can spin out of control, what it was like to be arrested at the airport, face her family in shackles, and navigate the Canadian prison system. She opens up about addiction, bad decisions, shame, and the brutal uncertainty of house arrest and sentencing. But this isn't just a story about a fall — it's about a comeback. Inside prison, Emily started experimenting with popcorn recipes, listening to other women's stories, and dreaming up a brand that would stand for second chances. That prison-born idea became Comeback Snacks — a popcorn company that now sells in over 1,200 retail stores, hires formerly incarcerated people, and uses bold flavors to spark conversations about redemption and prison reform. From building a business out of a halfway house kitchen to speaking on stages, producing documentaries, and becoming a voice for fair-chance hiring, Emily proves that mistakes are universal — and so are comebacks. If you've ever wondered whether your worst decisions have to define you, this episode will hit home.Listen in as Brent and Emily talk prison, purpose, entrepreneurship, Comeback Snacks, and what it really takes to rebuild your life after a conviction.Show sponsors: Navigating the challenges of white-collar crime? What does it take to turn a life of chaos into one of purpose and impact? In this episode of The Greatness Machine, Darius sits down with Andre Norman, author, speaker, and transformational leader whose journey from maximum-security prison to Harvard University is nothing short of extraordinary. Andre opens up about the pivotal moments that changed his trajectory, from leading a prison gang to realizing he was built for something greater. He shares how education, faith, and the right mentors helped him rebuild his mindset and redirect his drive toward helping others do the same. Throughout the conversation, Andre and Darius explore the real meaning of redemption, why self-awareness is key to change, and how people can break free from their environments, no matter how deep the hole seems. In this episode, Darius and Andre will discuss: (00:00) Introduction to Greatness and Transformation (05:13) The Awakening: Setting Goals in Solitary Confinement (12:26) Mental Resilience: Surviving Solitary Confinement (17:15) Breaking the Cycle: From Gang Leader to Harvard Fellow (27:08) The Cost of Incarceration (28:28) Psychological Impact of Imprisonment (29:17) Comparing Global Prison Systems (30:54) The Historical Context of Prisons (32:42) Reforming the Penal System (34:06) Barriers to Change in Corrections (39:39) Rebuilding the System from Scratch (41:37) The Importance of Education (45:11) Changing Outcomes through New Approaches (46:25) Community Involvement for Change (50:52) Overcoming Barriers to Greatness Andre Norman is living proof that second chances are real. Once facing a 105-year prison sentence and leading gang activity behind bars, he turned his life around through education, faith, and determination. Today, as the founder of The Academy of Hope, he works to reduce prison violence and promote rehabilitation. Killing Time in Calcutta https://chinacall.substack.com/p/killing-time-in-a-calcutta-burial So I’m currently recording in my little hotel room just outside the Calcutta airport in India’s West Bengal State, having flown in late last night. India, as you may know, is probably more hostile to the Gospel than it has been for some time. Many missionaries have been kicked out in recent years, including some friends of mine, and it’s generally not a good idea to announce that you are a missionary when applying for a visa or coming through immigration. “Tourist” will do just fine, thank you. Once you’re in, you can pretty much do what you want. I have to admit I was a tiny bit nervous coming in last night, because I’m still a somewhat shell-shocked after what happened exactly a month ago while trying to enter Egypt on a short, run-of-the-mill (research) trip, when I was denied entry and deported a few hours later (seemingly) for having too many tracts in my backpack. So I was happy to make it into India last night with nary a question (and no bag scanners). The only thing dodgy about my arrival were the mosquitoes that have taken up permanent residence in the Calcutta airport, and the lack of sidewalks between the terminal and my hotel about ½ mile away. Episode 10 of 15 | Series 36: Serial Killers in HistoryFinland's first documented serial killer terrorized two continents across three decades. This episode traces Matti Haapoja's brutal journey from famine-ravaged Finland to Siberian exile and back—a life defined by escape, violence, and ultimately, one final act of defiance.Victim HumanizationHeikki Impponen was forty-two years old when he walked along that frozen road in December 1867. A farmer with a wife named Kaisa and three children waiting at home, he had known young Matti since childhood—their fathers had worked neighboring fields, they had been boys together in the harsh Finnish countryside. He carried what little money he had, perhaps hoping to buy food during Finland's devastating Great Famine. Maria Jemina Salo was in her early twenties, trying to survive in Helsinki's rougher districts, wearing a silver necklace her mother had given her. Guard Juho Rosted had worked at Kakola Prison for eleven years, with a pregnant wife expecting their fourth child—a daughter who would never know her father. Why This Case MattersMatti Haapoja's crimes fundamentally reshaped Finland's approach to criminal justice and prison security. His four successful escapes from Kakola Prison exposed critical weaknesses in the nation's penal system, earning the facility the mocking nickname "Pakola"—the escape prison. His case prompted a complete overhaul of prison architecture and security protocols throughout Finland. The investigation techniques developed to track him helped establish the framework for modern Finnish police procedures, while the case demonstrated how the Great Famine of 1866-1868, which killed 270,000 Finns, created conditions where desperate violence flourished.Content WarningThis episode contains descriptions of violent murders and suicide. Listener discretion advised.Key Case DetailsHaapoja's criminal career spanned three decades across two continents, leaving eight confirmed victims dead and exposing the limitations of 19th-century criminal justice systems across Finland and Siberia.• Timeline: First murder December 6, 1867, during Finland's Great Famine; sentenced to Siberian exile in 1880; returned to Finland September 1890; final escape attempt October 10, 1894; death by suicide January 8, 1895• Investigation: Haapoja's escapes revealed major security flaws in Finnish prisons; his capture after Maria Salo's murder came when his notorious reputation led to his recognition in Porvoo just days after the crime• Resolution: Sentenced to death in 1891 (automatically commuted to life imprisonment as Finland had abolished capital punishment in 1826); died by his own hand while awaiting trial for murdering Guard Juho Rosted• Historical Context: The puukkojunkkari (knife-fighter) culture of Southern Ostrobothnia shaped Haapoja's violent identity; his skeleton was displayed in the Finnish Museum of Crime for 99 years before burial in 1995Historical Context & SourcesThis episode draws on records from the National Museum of Finland, the National Biography of Finland, and the BiographySampo database. Prison museum collections preserve the tools of Haapoja's escapes—rope, wooden slats, and a floorboard with a drilled hole. Contemporary newspaper accounts from the 1890s, which sensationally compared his crimes to Jack the Ripper's London murders, provide crucial details about his final trial and death. The Circuit Court records of Hausjärvi from 1891 document his arrogant confession and the commutation of his death sentence.Resources & Further ReadingFor listeners interested in exploring this case and era further, these historically significant sources provide additional context:• The National Museum of Finland maintains archival materials on 19th-century Finnish criminal justice and the puukkojunkkari phenomenon• The Finnish National Biography database (Biografiakeskus) contains verified biographical details on Haapoja and his contemporaries• Academic research on the Great Famine of 1866-1868 illuminates the devastating conditions that shaped Haapoja's early crimesCall-to-ActionNext week on Foul Play: Francisco Guerrero Pérez terrorized Mexico City for decades, targeting women the newspapers refused to mourn. The show opens with a headline that surprises a lot of listeners: Diddy, while behind bars, organized and funded a full Thanksgiving dinner for 1,000 inmates at FCI Fort Dix, turning a grim holiday for prisoners into a moment of community and solidarity. Then, they shift gears to a controversy involving Russell Wilson, whose former teammate called the Thanksgiving celebration at Wilson’s home “weird,” sparking debate about celebrity privacy, social media morals, and whether public figures can truly separate personal life from public perception. The Messy family weighs in—half siding with privacy rights, half calling it tone-deaf. The tone becomes legal and dramatic when hosts dive into news that Todd Tucker is challenging his prenup with Kandi Burruss, claiming the agreement is “unconscionable,” contradicting terms she originally accepted. The segment explores prenup fairness, community expectations, and what this means for high-profile Black marriages. Finally, the discussion turns political as Chuck Schumer blames MAGA supporters for the multiple bomb threats sent recently to his New York offices — a reminder that threats to democracy still lurk behind partisan noise.
