The official framing leans on routine housing pressures and standard placement decisions at MCC, but that's hard to square with Epstein's status as the most high-profile detainee in the building, under intense scrutiny, with known safety and suicide-risk concerns. What makes it even messier is that after Epstein was found injured in his cell, internal documentation reflects that Epstein told staff his cellmate tried to kill him—a claim that directly contradicts any “nothing to see here” tone about the housing choice. Even if officials later described the episode as murky, disputed, or consistent with self-harm, the fact remains: the inmate at the center of the most sensitive federal custody situation in America ended up in a cell with a man the public would never describe as “low-risk,” and then immediately said he'd been attacked.And that's where the “official narrative” keeps running into its own credibility problem: it asks the public to accept a chain of extraordinary coincidences inside a facility later shown to be riddled with procedural failures. Even if officials later described the episode as murky, disputed, or consistent with self-harm, the fact remains: the inmate at the center of the most sensitive federal custody situation in America ended up in a cell with a man the public would never describe as “low-risk,” and then immediately said he'd been attacked.And that's where the “official narrative” keeps running into its own credibility problem: it asks the public to accept a chain of extraordinary coincidences inside a facility later shown to be riddled with procedural failures. Several of them will have been on hunger strike now for over 50 days. At the weekend and each day since, protests have taken place across the island of Ireland and in Britain. Irish republicans have a natural affinity with those who use hunger strike in protest against inhumane prison conditions and to advance democratic aims. It is impossible to deny the impact of lies and white supremacy on the institutional conditions in US prisons. There is a particular power dynamic of racist intent in the prison system that culminates in what Brittany Friedman terms "carceral apartheid." Prisons are a microcosm of how carceral apartheid operates as a larger governing strategy to decimate political targets and foster deceit, disinformation, and division in society. Among many shocking discoveries, Friedman shows that beginning in the 1950s, California prison officials declared war on imprisoned Black people and sought to identify Black militants as a key problem, creating a strategy for the management, segregation, and elimination of these individuals from the prison population that continues into the present day. Carceral Apartheid: How Lies and White Supremacists Run Our Prisons (UNC Press, 2025), delves into how the California Department of Corrections deployed various official, clandestine, and at times extralegal control techniques, including officer alliances with imprisoned white supremacists, to suppress Black political movements, revealing the broader themes of deception, empire, corruption, and white supremacy in American mass incarceration. Drawing from original interviews with founders of Black political movements such as the Black Guerilla Family, white supremacists, and a swath of little-known archival data, Friedman uncovers how the US domestic war against imprisoned Black people models and perpetuates genocide, imprisonment, and torture abroad.
