Today's guest has lived through war, incarceration, addiction, trauma, and some of the most difficult chapters of American history—and yet his life has become a powerful testament to the possibility of transformation. Greg Payton was a young African-American soldier drafted into the Vietnam War. His experience included time in a military stockade in Vietnam, where racial injustice, harsh conditions, and mounting tensions ultimately erupted into a devastating prison riot in 1968. But Greg's story did not end with the war. After returning home, he faced PTSD, addiction, homelessness, and the difficult task of finding his way back to himself. Through recovery and his connections with Vietnam Veterans Against the War and other peace activists, he discovered a new purpose. He became an international peacemaker, traveling to places including Belfast, South Africa, Bosnia, and Vietnam, standing alongside people who were working to confront violence and injustice. His memoir, Peace Warrior: How I Escaped the Prison of Anger, is not simply a story about surviving war. It is a story about what happens when a person decides that anger, pain, and the past will no longer dictate the future. Today, we'll talk about the Vietnam War, racism in the military, the hidden costs of trauma, addiction and recovery, forgiveness, and the lifelong journey from being a warrior shaped by conflict to becoming a warrior for peace.

Together, they stole three enormous pigs, loaded them into Garrett's 1977 Toyota Celica and sold them at auction—only for his mother to short him on his share of the money.From there, Garrett's life descends into stolen cars, homemade meth pipes, purple crank, mobile meth labs, prison riots and increasingly elaborate criminal schemes. He trades half a gram of meth for a Toyota, steals an enormous boulder for a drug connection, receives 168 traffic tickets and eventually organizes drug drops into prison using runners, duffel bags, trash cans and body-cavity “plugs.”In prison, Garrett injects meth for the first time. Once released, he combines meth and heroin in goofball shots and becomes trapped in a cycle of addiction, homelessness, incarceration and treatment. Everything finally begins to change when his friend Levi—nine months sober—embraces him inside a treatment facility and tells him, “I really hope you stay.”Garrett did stay. Thirteen years later, he has rebuilt his relationships, established a career in construction, helped create Mindset Recovery and become the present father his daughter always deserved. Lori Vallow Daybell told an Arizona judge that Jesus Christ would free her from prison. She told Keith Morrison on Dateline that she'd be exonerated and might go on Dancing With the Stars afterward. She told the Idaho court at sentencing that no one was murdered. Three juries across two states convicted her. She has never absorbed a single verdict.The Idaho Supreme Court has scheduled her appeal for November 2 in Boise. Her attorney Craig Durham has five constitutional claims, and the strongest involves the removal of her hired lawyer Mark Means over a conflict tied to co-defendant Chad Daybell. The state has a recorded jail call where Chad called Means “my attorney” and documented evidence that Chad arranged and paid for the representation. If the court finds the removal was wrong, the conviction falls without any additional proof of harm.Lori spent 353 days too incompetent to stand trial, moved the case across the state, and then filed a speedy-trial claim over the delay. She represented herself in two Arizona conspiracy trials in 2025, picked up two more life sentences, and is currently housed at the Pocatello Women's Correctional Center. Even if the Idaho Supreme Court reverses every conviction, the Arizona paper doesn't move. Attorney General James Uthmeier's office said the agreement applies to Starbucks operations nationwide, rather than only its stores in Florida.Under the settlement, Starbucks agreed to comply with the Prisoner advocate Vickie Roach spent decades in and out of jail but after studying for her masters degree, she helped change the story for thousands of other prisoners.When Vicki was just two years old, she was given a police record, which enabled authorities to place her into the custody of a family she didn't know.She grew up under the strict religious rule of her adoptive mother, whom she clashed with frequently.Vickie left school at thirteen.
