What if the hero afraid of his own power is exactly what makes it easy to fear an entire population? Matthew Fox is joined by returning guests Will Freeland and Steve Stormoen of the “Hype Is My Superpower” podcast to dig into “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” Peter's uneasy partnership with the Punisher, and how Bruce Banner's fear of himself ends up doing quiet work in the movie's X-Men subplot. The three trace comic references straight out of “Civil War,” “Ultimate Comics,” and the original “Brand New Day” storyline, argue about whether Jean Grey finally gets to be a character instead of a plot device, and dig into a scene where MJ takes back the agency Peter tried to take from her. Lastly, they get into whether we should evaluate this movie on its own or as the last MCU release before “Avengers: Doomsday.”Full show notes and resourcesConnect with Will Freeland: Twitch · Instagram**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, an Ethical Panda podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY se acaba de estrenar y nos presenta cómo es la vida ahora con un Peter Parker a quien nadie recuerda, ni siquiera sus seres queridos. Taking over from Jon Watts director Destin Daniel Cretton steps into the director's chair and brings the larger than life spectacle of the MCU back down to the ground a little bit as the reset button is hit following the events of 2021's "No Way Home," where those who knew Peter Parker cannot remember him any longer, thus forcing our favorite web-slinger into isolation and depression, which leads to some unexpected changes in his DNA while a new mysterious foe emerges that will have ramifications across the entire MCU. Also, Bruce Banner (aka. Hulk), Frank Castle (aka. Punisher), and Yelena Belova (aka. Black Widow) show up! What did we think of it? Please tune in either on video or audio only as we discuss the film's story, its performances, action, humor, visual effects, its awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. San Diego Comic-Con delivered one of the biggest news weekends of the year, and we're digging into all of it on this week's AIPT Comics Podcast. We break down DC's latest Next Level announcements, including new ongoing series for Vixen, Static, Batman, The Demon, and Jonah Hex, react to Marvel's Predator vs. Punisher, unpack Christian Ward's newly announced Pandemonium, and even talk about Ryan Gosling's surprising Ghost Rider reveal. If it made headlines at SDCC, we're giving it the full AIPT treatment. After that, David sits down with Christian Ward to discuss Forever Home, his ambitious new Oni Press series with Sami Kivelä. Ward explains how the story grew from a simple yet unforgettable premise: a house that survives climate collapse by falling outside of time, where every 20 minutes inside equals a year in the outside world. The conversation explores the book's emotional family drama, its retro-futuristic design, climate anxiety, billionaire bunkers, and why Kivelä's storytelling elevates every page. Ward also reflects on balancing writing and art, teases what's next in his career, and shares why Forever Home is one of his most personal creator-owned projects to date. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) Directed by: Destin Daniel Cretton Written by: Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers (based on the Marvel comic by Stan Lee & Steve Ditko) Starring: Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Michael Mando, Mark Ruffalo, Liza Colón-Zayas, Florence Pugh IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt22084616/ Episode Summary In this episode of Mindframes, Michael and Dave discuss Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), a soft-reboot superhero film that finds Peter Parker fighting crime full-time in a New York that no longer remembers he exists. The discussion explores whether the film's quieter, more introspective first act successfully re-energizes a fatigued genre, the wisdom of internalizing Spider-Man's central struggle as his own spider-DNA begins to take over ("spider puberty"), and a plot the hosts agree is overstuffed with characters and motivations. Along the way: Jon Bernthal's softened Punisher, Sadie Sink's tangential villain, an unnecessary Hulk, and some of the most aggressive BMW product placement either host can remember. Reference points include Sam Raimi, The Empire Strikes Back, and the boring-superhero cautionary tales of Superman Returns and Man of Steel. On-air verdicts: Dave — 4/5. Michael — 3/5. (Dave really enjoyed it; Michael landed mixed — "10% greatness, 90% mid" — praising the third act while faulting the loaded first two.) Thematic Discussion Spider-Man: Brand New Day explores loneliness, and the idea that community is vulnerability. The film suggests that even with superhuman strength, no one gets through isolation alone — that reaching out, being earnest, and letting people back in is the actual work, and the only real cure. Peter erased himself from everyone he loved to keep them safe; the film argues that choice was the wound, not the protection. Both hosts landed on the thematic point being earned: the melancholy is felt, the reconnection with Ned and MJ is left meaningfully ambiguous rather than reset, and Sadie Sink's character works as a dark-mirror counterpoint — the same loss, but a person who pushes everyone away instead. Timestamps Time Segment 00:00 Intro & setup 02:59 The soft reboot: smart move or gimmick? 07:28 Jon Bernthal's Punisher 10:55 The cast: Ned, the villains, a Benedict Wong tangent 14:36 Technical analysis: look, sound, pacing & product placement 24:02 An overstuffed plot and thin villain motivation 25:43 Director context: Raimi, Empire, and Cretton's roots 27:27 Spoiler-free verdicts 35:18 Spoiler section begins 35:29 Thematic deep dive: loneliness & connection as vulnerability 39:16 Is the ending earned? Would You Leave an Empty Urinal Between You and a Stranger? The Hilarious Guy Code Debate, Spider-Man Surprises, and a Texas Drink Showdown Would you leave an empty urinal between yourself and another guy, or are there some rules that should never be broken? This episode of The JB and Sandy Show is packed with laugh-out-loud moments, pop culture buzz, Texas pride, and one surprisingly passionate debate about bathroom etiquette that has everyone weighing in. Steven Presley from ThunderPop TV joins the show to break down some of the biggest entertainment stories making headlines. From growing excitement around a potential Home Alone legacy sequel featuring Macaulay Culkin to country superstar Ella Langley's newest business venture, the conversation explores how today's celebrities are expanding their brands far beyond music and movies. The crew also dives into the highly anticipated new Spider-Man film, and even self-proclaimed Spider-Man skeptic Tricia starts to soften her stance after hearing what makes this installment different. Could this finally be the movie that changes her mind? Closer to home, the team spotlights a massive new Austin venue celebrating the city's rich music culture, creativity, and history. It is a love letter to Austin that sounds like a must-visit destination for locals and visitors alike. Other memorable moments include: The surprisingly intense battle to determine Texas' ultimate signature drink. Sandy's attempt to explain a classic men's bathroom unwritten rule that leaves everyone laughing. Family weekend plans, senior parking spot traditions, and the joys of parenting teenagers. JB's fascinating trip through Texas food history, including the story behind the rise of fajitas. One of the funniest quotes of the day comes during the bathroom etiquette discussion: “If there's four urinals wide open, there's only two available.” Whether you're here for the entertainment news, Texas culture, random trivia, or the nonstop chemistry between JB, Sandy, and Tricia, this episode delivers plenty of laughs and unexpected conversations. Subscribe to The JB and Sandy Show, leave a review, and share this episode with a friend who appreciates great stories, pop culture, and a good Texas debate.

Is it possible to find something fresh in a superhero series as long in the tooth as Spider-Man's? Well, thanks to solid acting, thoughtful pacing and some terrific action set pieces, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is an involving and peppy popcorn flick. In an attempt to save his friends and loved ones from harm, Peter Parker had Dr. Strange cast a spell so that no one would know him. But the arrival of a mysterious nemesis with telekinetic powers complicates matters, getting the Hulk and Punisher involved. Sadie Sink is excellent as a troubled character, but to identify her would be a major spoiler. Let's just say the Avengers Universe is expanding. "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" shows that Marvel still has gas in the tank thanks to sharp direction and thoughtful production. Despite its title, the Amazon Prime thriller "The Devil's Mouth" is not a supernatural horror flick. It's a survival drama where a group of dimwitted college friends decide to swim in a notoriously dangerous cave in Thailand. Naturally, they choose the most difficult route and encounter...you guessed it...a ravenous shark. Kathryn Newton leads the cast in this predictable drama that is so cliched and annoying that you might just find yourself rooting for the shark. Thank heaven for Snoopy. His adventures in the Apple TV animated offering "There's No Place Like Home, Snoopy," are more believable than those of the kids in "The Devil's Mouth." During a yard sale, Charlie Brown's sister Sally inadvertently sells Snoopy's doghouse. As the Peanuts gang tries to figure out how to return it, they all learn a lesson about what home really means. It's a short, sweet and funny family outing.

I just got home from seeing Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and I had to hit record while the reaction was still fresh. Brandon breaks down fear, obligation, and guilt, also known as FOG, and how these feelings can leave someone feeling helpless, powerless, and afraid to resist. He also explores the six stages of emotional blackmail: demand, resistance, pressure, threats, compliance, and repetition. The episode also examines the four styles of emotional blackmailers: the Punisher, the Self-Punisher, the Sufferer, and the Tantalizer. Through examples of threats, guilt, conditional love, silent treatment, and future promises, Brandon explains how emotional blackmail slowly wears down boundaries and teaches victims that giving in is the safest way to restore peace. This episode is designed to help survivors recognize emotional blackmail, understand why these tactics are so effective, and begin making sense of the manipulation they may have experienced. We also discuss his love of Eastman and Laird's work, collaborating with artist Juann Cabal, bringing forgotten characters back into the spotlight, and why this story will embrace every corner of TMNT history while carving out its own identity. Those are some massive touchstones. What qualities from those stories became your creative north star for this new era of TMNT? Your story begins immediately after Gene Luen Yang's "The City That Never Dies" storyline, which sounds like it leaves the city fundamentally changed. How did Gene Luen Yang's finale create opportunities that wouldn't have existed otherwise? One of the biggest hooks is that the Turtles are being hunted over the course of a single night. What made that compressed timeline appealing, and how does it change the pacing compared to a more traditional TMNT story? You said the team hunting the Turtles is assembled specifically for this mission. Without spoiling who's involved, what makes this group uniquely equipped to challenge all four brothers at once? 10:59 Juann Cabal has shown he can handle kinetic action and expressive character work across Marvel and DC. What is it about his storytelling you're excited to see in TMNT?  You've mentioned your love for Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's Mirage Studios era. Were there specific themes or storytelling techniques from those early comics that you wanted to bring back for modern readers? Your comics often balance brutal action with sharp humor and strong character voices. How do you approach writing the Turtles so each brother feels distinct, especially when they're under constant pressure? You've written everything from street-level crime stories to huge superhero events. Where does TMNT fit creatively for you, and does it scratch a different storytelling itch than books like What's the Furthest Place From Here? or your Marvel work? You're taking over with issue #25, which already feels like a milestone. Looking ahead, what do you hope readers say about your TMNT run after they've finished that first story arc? This week on Gamertag Radio, Last week, Sony Pictures invited me to the Spider-Man: Brand New Day press conference with the cast and filmmakers. Truly grateful for the opportunity. Tom Holland Zendaya Jacob Batalon Sadie Sink Jon Bernthal Director Destin Daniel Cretton Producer Kevin Feige Producer Amy Pascal Here are some of the quotes from the press conference: Tom Holland on Peter's isolation: "Sometimes the bravest thing that you can do is ask for help. And he is actively ignoring that advice, and it is having a profound effect on his life..."Tom Holland on Sadie Sink: "..For me, I think Sadie is an unsung hero because she can't talk about anything, right?"Zendaya on the MJ/Peter dynamic shift: "In previous films MJ was always the pessimist and it was Peter that was always the optimist... Now that he's alone, he's kind of adopted that negativity and she's adopted his positivity without even knowing it."Jon Bernthal on protecting the Punisher: "I think what we set out to do is to make it believable that the Punisher could walk out of one of those TV-MA shows and onto this set and vice versa."Amy Pascal on the true essence of Spider-Man: "...when he is sitting on the floor by the washing machine... looking at the key to the city, which is the thing that's supposed to make him feel good about himself, and this little washing machine in this little apartment and his suit in there spinning around, I thought that is the essence of Spider-Man."Thanks once again to Sony Pictures for giving me the opportunity. I can't wait to check out the film!

Big news out of Marvel Comics today: Stephen Wacker has been named the company's new Editor-in-Chief. Given all the executive changes Marvel has gone through in recent years, it's encouraging to see someone with deep comic book experience taking the reins of the publishing line.Wacker's résumé extends well beyond editing comics. In addition to overseeing some of Marvel's biggest publishing initiatives, he also served as Vice President of Marvel Animation and later as Vice President of Marvel New Media, helping guide projects like the Marvel Audio Universe on SiriusXM, including Wolverine and other serialized Marvel audio dramas. To celebrate the news, we're going back to this 2012 Word Balloon conversation with Stephen. It's a fascinating snapshot of Marvel during one of its most creative periods. We talk about the birth of Spider-Man's Brand New Day era, Dan Slott's early run on Amazing Spider-Man, Greg Rucka's Punisher, and Mark Waid's acclaimed Daredevil. Stephen also gets into the weeds on major crossover events like Spider-Island, Shadowland, and DC's The New 52, while pulling back the curtain on Marvel's creator retreats and the collaborative process behind building the Marvel Universe.Ok, yes, this conversation is now more than a decade old, but I think it still provides a valuable window into how Steve Wacker thinks about comics—how he approaches storytelling, editorial decisions, and working with creators. Until I have the chance to sit down with him again, this interview answers a lot of the questions newer readers may have about the philosophy and instincts of the man now leading Marvel Comics. Enjoy this 2012 conversation with Marvel's new Editor-in-Chief, Stephen Wacker.
