Welcome to my sophomore episode, all about animation! If all you know about animated features is big studio blockbusters like Toy Story or Into the Spider-Verse, let me expand your mind into some vintage treasures from the fringes of animation history. These films will give you a new appreciation for the art form, and a throwback to the days when everything was drawn and painted by hand. Digital animation today is still driven by artists, and these old-school rarities are part of what paved the way for what animation can do. And it's not just for kids either! WIZARDS (1977)Ralph Bakshi is a legend in the animation world, known for his raunchy, gritty urban dramas like Fritz the Cat and Cool World. This is a fantasy he made one year before his animated adaptation of Lord of the Rings — and it has similar themes & visuals of elves, fairies, orcs, battle sequences, an evil overload and a wise wizard. It's sloppy, funny, strange, and a psychedelic fever dream. ALLEGRO NON TROPPO (1976)This is Italian animator Bruno Bozzetto's classic parody of Disney's Fantasia, with all the familiar themes — except the orchestra is all made up of elderly ladies and a gorilla attacks. Six classical music pieces are set to different styles of animation, from the sad & beautiful to zany & bizarre. It's a glorious romp of satire and naughtiness. ROCK & RULE (1983)If rock music is more your jam, it's a moral imperative to check out this Canadian cult classic. Songs by Debbie Harry, Lou Reed, Cheap Trick, Iggy Pop, and Earth, Wind & Fire pump up the energy in this loud & ludicrous story about an evil rock star searching for the perfect voice to unleash an unearthly demon. Turn up the volume and enjoy a kaleidoscope of crazy animation and special effects! TWICE UPON A TIME (1983)While wrapping up his original Star Wars trilogy with Return of the Jedi, George Lucas helped his colleague John Korty (and co-director Charles Swenson) get this film made — but hardly anyone saw it. But time and animation fans have saved it from total obscurity, and it's an absolute delight. Filmed in a special stop-motion technique called LUMAGE, this is a brilliant mix of color, design, and improv comedy about a band of unlikely heroes who must save the world from an eternity of nightmares. On this episode, Marc talks to Ira Robbins, editor of "Zip It Up! Too: More of the Best of Trouser Press Magazine, 1974-1984," published on his own Trouser Press Books. It's a follow up to 2024's "Zip It Up!," the first anthology of pieces from the legendary music magazine which Robbins co-founded and co-edited; I talked to him about that book when it came out, and you can hear our conversation in episode 31 which ran in March 2024. This second volume features more great articles from Trouser Press, as well as the full series of what they called "Autodiscographies," in which bands such as Blondie, John Cale, Iggy Pop, Sparks and more give guided tours through their own discographies as they stood at the time. The book also includes features divided into categories such as The Old Guard, New Wave and Beyond, and Characters, with fascinating pieces on artists from Paul McCartney to the Cure to Can to Duran Duran.As Ira writes, "The story of Trouser Press resembles the story of a band. By the time the Isolar Tour ended in May 1976 David Bowie was sick of his family and friends (yuck) hassling him to stop snorting his beloved Raoul. Get out of my face. His plan was simple: tell everyone he was gonna clean out in Germany to throw them off his trail and then escape to Paris - where he can continue to snort drizzugs, bang black women, wear Nazi World War II regalia and just be David Bowie in peace. Pohoda, Slovakia's largest multi-genre festival, reached new heights in 2025, with director Mišo Kaščák calling it the best edition yet. Iggy Pop delivered an unforgettable show, while Africa Express took the stage not only in solidarity with their fellow musicians from Massive Attack—who couldn't attend this year—but also as a gesture of deep respect for the audience. The legendary Queens of the Stone Age from the U.S. ignited a wild mosh pit, as did local punk powerhouse Fvck_Kvlt from Trnava. Renowned American jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington and Slovakia's own jazz icon Peter Lipa each received standing ovations for their sets. Other standout live performances included female performers Skye from Morcheeba, Anoushka Shankar as well as Slovak musicians Jana Kirschner, and Katarzia, all of whom captivated the crowd. The Czech band Dukla surprised fans with a duet alongside Ela Tolstova, lead singer of the Slovak band Tolstoys, who recently performed at Glastonbury for the second year in a row. The festival's atmosphere and unforgettable moments were captured over four days in a special report and series of interviews by Martina Greňová Šimkovičová.

In this chat, we get to meet Joan as Police Woman, the musical project of singer, songwriter, violinist, composer Joan Wasser. Joan came up in the New York music scene of the 90s, but it wasn't until 2006 when she put out her debut solo LP as Joan as Police Woman, Real Life. Well now, exactly 20 years later (to the day!) Joan as put out Real Life Evolution, a total wall-to-wall reimagining and rerecording of that debut record. The sequence is different, the vibes are different, some songs are radically changed, and it's such a fun ride for those of us who have come to love that first record. Joan and I talk at length about this new recording, including what compelled her to go this route and how some of the new renditions came about, as well as the original '06 version and its arrival in her life. We touch on live performance, ANOHNI, Iggy Pop, improv, the love of music, and more. Thanks for listening.

Born and raised in Newport, Rhode Island, Sid Abruzzi came to surfing and skateboarding in the early 1960s. In 1969, 18-year-old Abbruzzi drove down to New Jersey to buy a few Rick single-fins, as surfboards were hard to come by in Rhode Island back then. He swiftly sold the boards, then sold another batch, and found a liking for this buying and selling business. In 1971, Abbruzzi opened Water Brothers Surf and Skate, which became the hub of surf-skate culture in Rhode Island. And in the spirit of "If you build it, they will come," the various quarterpipes, halfpipes, and full-scale skateparks that Abbruzzi spearheaded attracted the world's greatest skateboarders.  Hailed as the "Godfather of New England surfing," Abbruzzi is a regular at Ruggles, the fabled reef break along the scenic Newport Cliff Walk. When it became endangered, he stepped up as the spot's most vocal advocate, fighting the good fight—and winning.  Abbruzzi is a punk rocker. In 1981, he, his brother, and some friends started the band Big World. Abbruzzi was the lead singer. He threw body and blood into the shows. Big World opened for Iggy Pop, The Tubes, and Johnny Thunders, among others. Abbruzzi is the subject of Water Brother: The Sid Abbruzzi Story, a 2024 feature documentary. Now 74, Abbruzzi lives with his wife Danielle not far from the break where he first rode his first waves some 60-plus years ago. In this episode of Soundings, Abbruzzi talks with Jamie Brisick about the founding of Water Brothers, the commitment of cold water surfing, building his legendary skatepark, playing music, and shaping New England's surf and skate scene for over half a century. Sweeney is one of those guys who is impossible to sum up. He's a musician who has been a part of so many great bands, projects and records over the years — Superwolf, Chavez, Guided by Voices, the Hard Quartet, Iggy Pop, Current 93, Cass McCombs, Andrew WK … the list goes on and on. He's a consummate collaborator, perhaps the only person alive to have played with both Johnny Cash and Endless Boogie…with both the Dixie Chicks and Baby Dee … with both Adele and Six Organs of Admittance. Matt also hosts the excellent Guitar Moves web series, which gets into fascinating discussions with a wide array of guitarists. Madeline, Julian, and Emilio continue their cycle of Offbeat Musicals with a "Two-Shot" on a pair of turn-of-the-millennium glam-rock extravaganzas: Todd Haynes' "Velvet Goldmine" (1998) and John Cameron Mitchell's "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" (2001). Marking their fifth - yes, fifth - discussion on a Todd Haynes film, the trio begin by unpacking "Velvet Goldmine" and its refraction of the legacies of 1970s glam-rock icons such as David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, T. Rex, and Roxy Music. Presented in "Citizen Kane"-like fashion, the film conveys a distinct impression of a well-known popular music era without ever mentioning any of the aforementioned artists by name, and wandering in and out of the realms that often classify a musical. Premiering around the same time off-Broadway was the show that would then be adapted into the second film of focus, "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," unambiguously a musical, but one for people who may less typically gravitate to the genre. Larry Mullins, also known as Toby Dammit, is a musician, record producer, and composer who plays drums, percussion, and keyboards. He performs as a member of the bands Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Swans, and previously played with Iggy Pop and The Stooges.
