What's The Big Deal About Iggy Pop

Ongoing History of New Music

For this week's episode, we're going to go back into the ongoing history of new music vault and our “what's the big deal” series.  This is where we try to figure out why we keep hearing and reading about these old names from the past. How are they connected to today's music? What did they do 20, 30 years ago and why should we care? And if they were so damn important, why didn't they ever sell a lot of records in the first place? Simple. We need to care because without these performers, today's new rock and alternative music wouldn't be possible.   And honestly, icons don't get much bigger than Iggy Pop, who is universally known as the godfather of punk. So, we thought you'd like to have a listen and find out “what's the big deal about Iggy Pop” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

From 1974 to 2003 Carlos Alomar was the longest serving band member during David Bowie's historic career. He served as one of the key members of Bowie's infamous D.A.M. rhythm section--playing during the most artistically power stretch of his career. But that's not all. Carlos has played on more than 30 different gold or platinum albums with an enormous resume that includes names like James Brown, Chuck Berry, Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, Alicia Keyes, Iggy Pop, Luther Vandross, The Pretenders, Simple Minds (featuring his wife Robin Clark), Ben E. De första svenskar som lyckades exportera garagerock – flera år innan Union Carbide, Hives och Hellacopters gjorde succé – var The Nomads.

A Breath of Fresh Air

Chris Stein's story starts in Brooklyn, where he was born in 1950 into a free-thinking, politically leftist household. He wasn't exactly a model student—he got expelled from high school and bounced around for a bit before enrolling at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. That's where two of his lifelong passions really started to take shape: music and photography. Chris was already playing guitar in garage bands, soaking up the British Invasion and psychedelic rock, but art school helped him discover an eye for capturing moments on film. In the early '70s, Chris joined a band called the Stilettos. It was through that group that he met Debbie Harry. The connection was immediate. Romantic, creative, everything. When the Stilettos fell apart, Chris and Debbie stuck together and started what would become Blondie. They quickly became fixtures on the New York downtown scene where punk, art, and fashion were all bleeding into each other.Chris began co-writing songs, shaping the band's sound, and supporting Debbie's electric presence as frontwoman. He was all about texture, mood, and space and could be sharp and punky but also knew when to strip things back. Chris co-wrote some of Blondie's biggest songs—“Heart of Glass,” “Dreaming,” “Rip Her to Shreds,” and “In the Flesh.” Chris was always ahead of the curve. At the same time, he was constantly documenting everything with his camera. Chris was rarely without it, snapping candid photos of Debbie backstage and artists like Andy Warhol.Chris and Debbie's relationship was central to the whole Blondie story. They were partners in every sense—romantic, creative, and emotional. Chris has often called her his muse, and their chemistry fueled a lot of what made the band so compelling. But their life together wasn't always easy. In the early '80s, just as Blondie was hitting a commercial peak, Chris was diagnosed with a rare and serious autoimmune disease. It was debilitating and required years of treatment. Debbie dropped everything to care for him. The band fell apart. Fame took a back seat. And though they eventually ended their romantic relationship, their connection never really broke. They've stayed close ever since, continuing to collaborate and support each other through everything that followed. After Blondie disbanded in '82, Chris stepped away from the spotlight for a while. He worked behind the scenes, producing music. He collaborated with artists like Iggy Pop and while Debbie launched a solo career, Chris helped to shape projects. In the late '90s, Blondie got back together, and to everyone's surprise, they scored a huge hit with “Maria,” which went to number one in the UK. It was a real comeback moment, showing that the band still had something to say and an audience ready to hear it. Since then, they've released several albums—No Exit, The Curse of Blondie, Panic of Girls, and Pollinator—and have toured the world to multiple generations of fans. Chris kept writing and producing, still the quiet engine driving things forward.Health issues forced him to step away from touring in 2022, particularly heart-related problems that made life on the road difficult. But that didn't stop him from continuing to contribute creatively. He's still very much involved in the band's work and continues to explore photography, with his images being shown in galleries and books. His visual work is finally getting the recognition it deserves, not just as Blondie ephemera, but as important cultural documentation.Throughout it all, Chris Stein was never the loudest voice in the room, but always one of the most interesting. Whether with a guitar or a camera, he's been quietly shaping how we see and hear a pivotal moment in music and art history. His life has been messy and brilliant and uniquely his own.In this episode Chris Stein shares stories from his life and points us to his latest book - his autobiography - 'Under A Rock'His is a fascinating tale. I hope you enjoy it.

Richard Fearless is a true lifer. The DJ, producer and Death In Vegas founder sits down with Paul to reflect on 30 years of musical evolution that has taken him from the hugely influential Heavenly Social to Mercury Prize nominations, a top ten hit about a serial killer sung by Iggy Pop to his current creative renaissance, working free from industry bullshit and producing his best work in years,Growing up in remote Zambia with music-loving parents, Fearless recalls connecting with music at an early age. His path would lead through the emerging London techno scene of the late '80s and '90s, where he cut his teeth as a resident DJ alongside contemporaries like Andrew Weatherall and The Chemical Brothers before launching Death in Vegas. The conversation reveals a pivotal moment when commercial success led to a crossroads rather than continued mainstream pursuit. What emerges is the portrait of an artist who deliberately stepped away from major labels, management, and industry expectations to craft a more authentic sonic identity. His riverside studio "The Metal Box" becomes central to this narrative – an analog sanctuary where tape machines, field recordings, and environmental sounds combine to create the stripped-back, trance-inducing techno of his current work. "I make my best music when I'm digging deep within myself," he explains.Perhaps most compelling is Fearless's admission that he feels more proud of his recent, independent work than the commercial hits that brought him fame. His collaborative ventures with friend of Lost and Sound Daniel Avery and new dub-inspired night "Holy" demonstrate an artist still pushing boundaries rather than retreating into nostalgia. "I feel as excited about DJing as I was when I was 20," he confesses, signaling that artistic liberation has reinvigorated his passion.Death Mask by Death In Vegas is out now. Kate Pierson is a founding member of the B-52s: The World's Greatest Party Band, and a beacon for weirdos and queer-does since the late 70s. After decades of collaborating with the likes of Iggy Pop, R.E.M., and her Japanese side-band NiNa (more on that in the episode), Kate began writing and recording her entirely solo output in 2015. Last year, her second album Radios and Rainbows was released, and at the age of 77, Kate is bubbling with creativity and drive to continue creating. Between the B-52s' legendary back catalogue (which I've only really started discovering myself), Kate's solo work, and her reflections on her own queer legacy, there's a lot to get through in this conversation. We think you'll love them,   In Rock News, Jeff delves into songs that turn 60 on 2025, looks at Sunday Lunch with Toyah and Robert Fripp, and looks at Yachtley Crew, a strange phenomenon from California.  Our Album You Must Hear Before You Die this week is Raw Power (1973) by Iggy and the Stooges. The lo-fi production on this highly influential album is the source of much tension between Bowie and Iggy, much of it not fair. Still, many people know him best for his work with Medeski, Martin & Wood, alongside John Medeski and Chris Wood. If you enjoy this episode, please go check out Billy's interview with Mike Dawson on the Drum Candy podcast titled “Improvising and Cultivating a Creative Mindset”. I recently re-watched his anti-instructional film, Life on Drums, and I can't recommend it enough. It's essentially a series of conversations between Martin and his first drum teacher, Allen Herman. These discussions delve into topics such as soloing, time, tone, phrasing, free playing, and so much more. Interspersed throughout are some pretty rad solo and duet performances…all filmed with a cinematic aesthetic. So check that out if that interests you.  Right off the bat, we dive into the topic of soloing — something Billy encourages all drummers to do first thing when they sit behind the kit (even if just for five minutes), before jumping into the records that shaped him into the remarkable musician he is today. Cristobal Tapia de Veer on instinct, tension, and walking away from The White LotusIt‘s not often I have a guest on the show primarily known for scorring for screen but the outspoken, punk-rock ethosed, voice-warping composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer is so Lost and Sound it hurts. Whether it's the unnerving soundworld of Utopia, the chaotic beauty of The White Lotus, or the warped voices of A24‘s Babygirl, his scores don't just sit behind the picture—they shape how you feel it.In this conversation, we talk about how some of his most striking ideas come in a flash. How one of The White Lotus‘ most memoral earworms: “took me the time it takes you to listen to it,” he says. “I feel like somebody else did it for me.”We get into why scoring the show felt like “trying on a yellow dress,” and how stepping into unfamiliar territory let him bring something raw and unexpected to it. He's honest about how uncomfortable that space was—and how that discomfort helped him land something sharper.Cristobal opens up about working in an industry that often pulls in the opposite direction of intuition. We talk about trusting the subconscious, letting go of control, and how stepping back sometimes allows something better to come through. We also touch on his recent public split from The White Lotus—and the bigger questions that come when creativity and power don't align. If you're interested in how a politically minded Iggy Pop fan became one of the most highly revered film and TV composers working right now, or just curious about what it takes to stay true to your instincts inside a system that often doesn't want you to, this one's worth your time.If you're enjoying Lost and Sound, please do subscribe and leave a rating or review on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, or wherever you listen. The drummer and percussionist Billy Martin, whose name many Time Sensitive listeners may recognize—he created the Time Sensitive theme song—defies any boxed-in or limiting definitions of his work. Best known as a member of the band Medeski Martin & Wood (MMW), he's spent the past three-plus decades making experimental, boundary-pushing, and uncategorizable instrumental jazz-funk-groove music, shaping sounds that feel as expansive as they are definitive and distinctive. Across all his artistic output, Martin continually, meditatively searches for harmony. He is also a composer, a teacher, a visual artist, and a builder and craftsman. His expansive creative practice comes most alive at his home in Englewood, New Jersey, where he has cultivated a bamboo garden, crafted his own Japanese-style teahouse, and constructed a music studio. Martin is someone for whom rhythm is not just something heard, but also seen and felt.On the episode, he talks about his MMW journey at length, his concept of “rhythmic harmony,” and why he views sound creation as a sacred act.Special thanks to our Season 11 presenting sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Show notes:Billy Martin[7:31] Medeski Martin & Wood[7:31] John Medeski[7:31] Chris Wood[7:31] “Not Not Jazz” (2024)[10:12] Iggy Pop's “Avenue B” (1999)[10:12] Don Was[11:27] “The Lover” (1995)[11:27] “Friday Afternoon in the Universe” (1995)[11:27] “Old Angel Midnight” (1973) by Jack Kerouac[13:44] Ra-Kalam Bob Moses[13:44] John Scofield[13:44] David Baker[15:57] “Shuck It Up” (1993)[15:57] “It's a Jungle in Here” (1993)[18:12] “Latin Shuffle” (1998)[18:12] “Combustication” (1998)[18:12] Frankie Malabe[18:12] Art Blakey[33:25] Thelonious Monk[33:58] “Life on Drums” (2011)[38:32] John Bonham[38:32] Charlie Watts[38:32] Stewart Copeland[38:32] Elvin Jones[38:32] Max Roach[38:32] Danny Richmond[38:32] Charles Mingus[38:32] Jack DeJohnette[38:32] Joe Morello[38:32] Roy Haynes[38:32] Stan Getz[38:32] Airto Moreira[38:32] Naná Vasconcelos[38:32] Babatunde Olatunji[39:58] Gus Johnson[39:58] “Whatever Happened to Gus” (1998)[39:58] Steve Cannon[40:54] “Chubb Sub” (1995)[40:54] ”Uncle Chubb” (1992)[46:41] “Shack-man” (1996)[47:06] “Drumming Birds” (2004)[54:48] “Bamboo Rainsticks” (1999)[54:48] Amulet Records[1:00:23] Creative Music Studio

Nadine Whitney had the wonderful opportunity to speak with Karan Kandhari and Radhika Apte about Sister Midnight and how as original and ‘weird' as it is, it's also representative of people who are rarely seen as (essential) inhabitants of Mumbai. Both Karan and Radhika are an absolute joy to listen to. Kandhari's film is a marvel of inventiveness. The work itself breaks the rules of what is considered genre cinema by never settling on one. Sister Midnight is much like the artist who performed the song after which it is named. Igwald Popstar – known to people who haven't chosen a ridiculous nickname for him as Iggy Pop or James Newell Osterberg Jr., – a man for whom conformity is as anathema as wearing a shirt. It's punk, it's unpredictable, and it has no time to explain itself to people who aren't feeling its strange and wonderful rhythms.Uma and Gopal barely speak to each other but when Uma does open her mouth the crude (but funny) invectives pour out. Her spikiness doesn't bother her neighbour Sheetal (Chhaya Kadam) greatly who takes her under her own resigned wing. However, even when Uma tries (and fails) to be wifely Gopal isn't particularly receptive preferring instead to drink alone than to accommodate Uma. When they do try to be a young couple, they end up taking a pointless thirteen-hour excursion to a beach, only to have to turn around and go home again. Life seems to demand that when they are with each other it is in extremely close quarters which makes Uma more aggressive and Gopal more avoidant. The green wedding bangles she wears (and shakes in anger) become shackles she can't wait to have cut off.Uma begins to make her own way through the city encountering other people whose lives are on the fringes. A trans sex worker who feels a kind of kinship with Uma's oddness. An elevator attendant in a building she begins working at as a cleaner (“Can you clean?” Uma is asked. “I'm a domestic goddess.” She replies), and then there are the goats who seem to follow her wherever she goes. Something is rising in her – something feral and undeniable – neither welcomed nor wholly unwelcomed.Trying to describe what goes on in Sister Midnight is much like humming a blisteringly brilliant song and hoping your paltry version matches up. Karan Kandhari's marvellous vision simply needs to be seen and heard (the soundtrack is incredible) for the fantastic jolts to pull you into its idiosyncratic and singular orbit.Sister Midnight is vivid and infectious. Radhika Apte is towering as Uma who inability to just “be a person” makes her an outlaw setting her own rules. Expect the unexpected in Sister Midnight and trust wherever it takes you is going to be rebellious and irresistible. Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Bluesky @thecurbau. Here's a preview of “To Hell with Poverty!”, a new audiobook from Jon King, legendary frontman of iconic post-punk band Gang of Four. “To Hell with Poverty!” documents King's story from a south London slum and working-class background to international success as core musician, lyricist, writer, and producer in the legendary post-punk/funk band Gang of Four. King's memoir takes the reader on a journey full of raucous adventures from his childhood and teenage years, to the height of Gang of Four's success in the seventies and eighties. Thrown off Top of the Pops, truncheoned by police at an anti-Nazi rally, coming of age in the heart of the Leeds music scene and the UK post-punk movement, mingling with Hells Angels and other undesirables, supported by bands like R.E.M. and playing with the likes of the Police, Iggy Pop, and the Buzzcocks―King's time with Gang of Four is rich with jaw-dropping stories. Iggy Pop pushed rock further than anyone before him, committing to live acts of sex, sickness, and rumored suicide on stage. From his cocaine fueled bromance with David Bowie, to his search for inspiration in the voodoo rituals of Haiti, Iggy Pop never just crossed the line between art and madness. He bled all over it, and danced on the stains. This episode was originally published on October 15, 2019.
