Show NotesEarly Life & Tattoo Beginnings:JS grew up going back and forth to NYC, starting Fun City tattoo shop in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s, working with punk legends, including Iggy Pop and hanging around the Lower East Side near Katz's Deli. Took over Spider Webb's tattoo shop and innovated tattoo styles internationally.Wild Addiction Years:Struggled with violent, restless addiction in LA, carrying guns, dealing with near-death overdoses, and hitting rock bottom multiple times. Describes being surrounded by tragedy (neighbors dying, violence) while strung out.First Sobriety Attempts:Found AA through a phone call, went to meetings while sick and broken, experienced his first sober year full of fear and confusion but connected with a tribe. Stayed sober for 10 years but was still dangerously angry and unstable.Relapse & Real Surrender:After years dry but miserable, relapsed hard on speedballs and other drugs. After a near-fatal speedball overdose, sincerely prayed for help for the first time — a turning point that led to a true surrender and lasting recovery.Spiritual Awakening & 12 Steps:Recommitted to sobriety at 48, dove deep into 12-step literature and principles, learning the disease was rooted in selfishness, self-centeredness, and insanity, not just substances. Developed a personal understanding of “God as we understood Him” and built a spiritual relationship that restored sanity.Plant Medicine Experiences:Explores ayahuasca and ibogaine ceremonies in Brazil and Mexico — the mother and stern general of plant medicines. Describes transformative, often brutal trips, communicating with ancestral spirits, and being a bridge to help suffering souls find peace.Integration with AA:Believes his foundation in AA allowed the plant medicine experiences to speak in a language he understood, blending 12-step spirituality with psychedelic healing. Emphasizes these tools aren't for everyone; people must be called to them.Writing & Legacy:Channels his higher self to write influential, raw literature about addiction and recovery. Proud of his work that connects deeply with people facing darkness.Wild Stories & Encounters:Remembers meeting Johnny Depp and Hunter S. Thompson, including a hilarious story about buying mummified fingers at a flea market and delivering a sarcastic note to a hotel room.

This month we appear to be teleporting between CBGB's, Studio 54,  The 100 Club, The Berlin Wall and some kind of prog gig in a field in Cambridgeshire as we battle over our favourite songs of 1977!We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - David Bowie, Chic, Commodores, Elvis Costello, The Damned, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Dean Friedman, Fleetwood Mac, Peter Gabriel, Heldon, Richard Hell, Billy Joel, Kiss, Fela Kuti, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Anthony Phillips, Pink Floyd, Plastic Bertrand, Iggy Pop, Queen, Ramones, Suicide, Talking Heads, Television, George Thorogood & The Destroyers, Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers, John Williams & The London Symphony Orchestra, Wire, Bill Withers, & X-Ray SpexFind all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4Gh83sLsD9mCpQAIliafVB?si=49b9628e338d4c77Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next few months or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Dougie Bowne is a producer, drummer, guitarist, and composer who entered New York's avant-garde scene in his early twenties after a chance street encounter with a member of John Cale's circle, who invited him to jam simply because he was carrying a bag of drum sticks and “looked cool”. Unfamiliar with Cale at the time, Dougie nonetheless accepted—and that serendipitous moment launched him into the heart of the Downtown scene. Since then, he has collaborated with an eclectic roster of artists, including John Cale, Iggy Pop, Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson, The Lounge Lizards, Marianne Faithfull, as well as filmmakers Edet Belzberg and Jim Jarmusch.

Hello and welcome to How Did I Get Here? From The Vault! Today we go back to episode 88 for a great conversation with rock and roll legend, Hunt Sales (Tin Machine, Iggy Pop, Todd Rundgren) originally released on July 24, 2012! Below are my original notes form the show.    My guest for episode 88 is the great Hunt Sales! Hunt is a rock and roll treasure. Wether he's being the backbone and backbeat of Iggy Pop's "Lust For Life", the backbone, backbeat and personality of Tin Machine (Hunt's band with David Bowie) or the songwriting & drumming lead singer of his newest band, The Hunt Sales Memorial, he's playing with the kind of passion that moves you. or at least, moves me. My friend Bevis (Griffin, who's been a guest on this show), texted me Saturday about havin Hunt on the show. I flipped-out and sad, YES! so, yesterday hunt came over to the apartment and we got to talk. We got to patch-up some weirdness that was lingering between from a record  we worked on over a decade ago and he told me about his journey. From being around his father, Soupy's musician friends, playing his first session at 10 years old, Todd Rundgren at 15, Iggy Pop and David Bowie, working and most of all, staying true to what you do. Hunt is an inspiration. He plays from his heart. He always has. Check out the videos on our facebook page and you'll see what I mean. This conversation inspired me to no end. Thank you, Hunt. ciao, jg    Follow us on Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or anywhere you pod. Send someone the gift of Johnny with Cameo.   If you feel so inclined. For this week's episode, we're going to go back into the ongoing history of new music vault and our “what's the big deal” series.  This is where we try to figure out why we keep hearing and reading about these old names from the past. How are they connected to today's music? What did they do 20, 30 years ago and why should we care? And if they were so damn important, why didn't they ever sell a lot of records in the first place? Simple. We need to care because without these performers, today's new rock and alternative music wouldn't be possible.   And honestly, icons don't get much bigger than Iggy Pop, who is universally known as the godfather of punk. This week John Wyatt Greenlee, Colin Colbourn, and Alan Malfavon flyover to talk about James Gunn's Superman, the need for heroes in everyday lives, and casting the rest of the DCU.About our guests:Alan Malfavon is Assistant Professor of History at California State University San Marcos.  His first book, Men of the Leeward Port: Veracruz's Afro-Descendants in the Making of Mexico, under contract with the University of Alabama Press, focuses on the understudied Afro-Mexican population of Veracruz and its hinterland of Sotavento (Leeward) and uses it to reframe the historical and historiographical transition between the colonial and national period. It argues how Afro-Mexicans facilitated, complicated, and participated in multiple socio-political processes that reshaped Veracruz and its borderlands. Colin Colbourn holds a Ph.D in U.S. History from the University of Southern Mississippi. His expertise includes mass communication and assisting in research efforts for unresolved casualties from past conflicts. Since 2007 he has published articles on Marine Corps history in Leatherneck: Magazine of the Marines, and was Associate Editor for the West Point History of Warfare. John Wyatt Greenlee is a medievalist and a cartographic historian, as well as a historian of roads and pathways and pilgrimage. But he is best well known for his work on the role of eels in pre-modern England from the tenth through the seventeenth centuries. He is heavily engaged in outreach and public engagement to make the eel history more widely known, and to raise awareness for the role of eels as an endangered species. His work with eels and eel history has been profiled in TIME, The Guardian, Atlas Obscura, Hakai Magazine, and The New Yorker  (click here for a full list of earned media)

Carlos has played on more than 30 different gold or platinum albums with an enormous resume that includes names like James Brown, Chuck Berry, Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, Alicia Keyes, Iggy Pop, Luther Vandross, The Pretenders, Simple Minds (featuring his wife Robin Clark), Ben E. De första svenskar som lyckades exportera garagerock – flera år innan Union Carbide, Hives och Hellacopters gjorde succé – var The Nomads. A Breath of Fresh Air

Chris Stein's story starts in Brooklyn, where he was born in 1950 into a free-thinking, politically leftist household. He wasn't exactly a model student—he got expelled from high school and bounced around for a bit before enrolling at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. That's where two of his lifelong passions really started to take shape: music and photography. Chris was already playing guitar in garage bands, soaking up the British Invasion and psychedelic rock, but art school helped him discover an eye for capturing moments on film. In the early '70s, Chris joined a band called the Stilettos. It was through that group that he met Debbie Harry. The connection was immediate. Romantic, creative, everything. When the Stilettos fell apart, Chris and Debbie stuck together and started what would become Blondie. They quickly became fixtures on the New York downtown scene where punk, art, and fashion were all bleeding into each other.Chris began co-writing songs, shaping the band's sound, and supporting Debbie's electric presence as frontwoman. He was all about texture, mood, and space and could be sharp and punky but also knew when to strip things back. Chris co-wrote some of Blondie's biggest songs—“Heart of Glass,” “Dreaming,” “Rip Her to Shreds,” and “In the Flesh.” Chris was always ahead of the curve. At the same time, he was constantly documenting everything with his camera. Chris was rarely without it, snapping candid photos of Debbie backstage and artists like Andy Warhol.Chris and Debbie's relationship was central to the whole Blondie story. They were partners in every sense—romantic, creative, and emotional. Chris has often called her his muse, and their chemistry fueled a lot of what made the band so compelling. But their life together wasn't always easy. In the early '80s, just as Blondie was hitting a commercial peak, Chris was diagnosed with a rare and serious autoimmune disease. It was debilitating and required years of treatment. Debbie dropped everything to care for him. The band fell apart. Fame took a back seat. And though they eventually ended their romantic relationship, their connection never really broke. They've stayed close ever since, continuing to collaborate and support each other through everything that followed. After Blondie disbanded in '82, Chris stepped away from the spotlight for a while. He worked behind the scenes, producing music. He collaborated with artists like Iggy Pop and while Debbie launched a solo career, Chris helped to shape projects. In the late '90s, Blondie got back together, and to everyone's surprise, they scored a huge hit with “Maria,” which went to number one in the UK. It was a real comeback moment, showing that the band still had something to say and an audience ready to hear it. Since then, they've released several albums—No Exit, The Curse of Blondie, Panic of Girls, and Pollinator—and have toured the world to multiple generations of fans. Chris kept writing and producing, still the quiet engine driving things forward.Health issues forced him to step away from touring in 2022, particularly heart-related problems that made life on the road difficult. But that didn't stop him from continuing to contribute creatively. He's still very much involved in the band's work and continues to explore photography, with his images being shown in galleries and books. His visual work is finally getting the recognition it deserves, not just as Blondie ephemera, but as important cultural documentation.Throughout it all, Chris Stein was never the loudest voice in the room, but always one of the most interesting. Whether with a guitar or a camera, he's been quietly shaping how we see and hear a pivotal moment in music and art history. His life has been messy and brilliant and uniquely his own.In this episode Chris Stein shares stories from his life and points us to his latest book - his autobiography - 'Under A Rock'His is a fascinating tale. I hope you enjoy it.

Richard Fearless is a true lifer. The DJ, producer and Death In Vegas founder sits down with Paul to reflect on 30 years of musical evolution that has taken him from the hugely influential Heavenly Social to Mercury Prize nominations, a top ten hit about a serial killer sung by Iggy Pop to his current creative renaissance, working free from industry bullshit and producing his best work in years,Growing up in remote Zambia with music-loving parents, Fearless recalls connecting with music at an early age. His path would lead through the emerging London techno scene of the late '80s and '90s, where he cut his teeth as a resident DJ alongside contemporaries like Andrew Weatherall and The Chemical Brothers before launching Death in Vegas. The conversation reveals a pivotal moment when commercial success led to a crossroads rather than continued mainstream pursuit. What emerges is the portrait of an artist who deliberately stepped away from major labels, management, and industry expectations to craft a more authentic sonic identity. His riverside studio "The Metal Box" becomes central to this narrative – an analog sanctuary where tape machines, field recordings, and environmental sounds combine to create the stripped-back, trance-inducing techno of his current work. "I make my best music when I'm digging deep within myself," he explains.Perhaps most compelling is Fearless's admission that he feels more proud of his recent, independent work than the commercial hits that brought him fame. His collaborative ventures with friend of Lost and Sound Daniel Avery and new dub-inspired night "Holy" demonstrate an artist still pushing boundaries rather than retreating into nostalgia. "I feel as excited about DJing as I was when I was 20," he confesses, signaling that artistic liberation has reinvigorated his passion.Death Mask by Death In Vegas is out now. But they aren't the only little freaks in attendance, because a young Willem Dafoe in a scene-stealing cameo, a leathery Iggy Pop in pure freak mode, and your two resident freaks, David and Justus, are also along for this ride through Waters' insane maximalist satire! It's Cry-Baby, this week on The Greatest Movie Ever Made!Cry-Baby (1990) is directed by John Waters and stars Johnny Depp, Amy Locane, Susan, Tyrrell, Iggy Pop, and Ricki LakeMusic: “Fractals” by Kyle Casey and White Bat Audio

This week's guest is Billy Martin ... a world-renowned drummer, educator, visual artist, producer, and author. He has collaborated with some of the best, including (but certainly not limited to) John Scofield, John Zorn, Iggy Pop, Natalie Merchant, Flea and many more. Still, many people know him best for his work with Medeski, Martin & Wood, alongside John Medeski and Chris Wood. If you enjoy this episode, please go check out Billy's interview with Mike Dawson on the Drum Candy podcast titled “Improvising and Cultivating a Creative Mindset”. I recently re-watched his anti-instructional film, Life on Drums, and I can't recommend it enough. It's essentially a series of conversations between Martin and his first drum teacher, Allen Herman. These discussions delve into topics such as soloing, time, tone, phrasing, free playing, and so much more. Interspersed throughout are some pretty rad solo and duet performances…all filmed with a cinematic aesthetic. So check that out if that interests you.  Right off the bat, we dive into the topic of soloing — something Billy encourages all drummers to do first thing when they sit behind the kit (even if just for five minutes), before jumping into the records that shaped him into the remarkable musician he is today.
