You can lose focus, force things, and start worrying more about the future than what needs to happen right now.But I also believe something important gets missed when people say that.You need something to shoot for.You need vision.You need purpose.You need a target that inspires you to get out of bed in the morning and keep moving forward when things become difficult.When I was part of the New York Rangers, we absolutely thought about the outcome. From the first day of training camp, the goal was clear. We wanted to win the Stanley Cup.That vision mattered.It created belief inside the locker room. It gave players direction. It unified the team around a common purpose. Nobody walked into that season hoping to simply “see what happens.” We believed we could accomplish something special.But here is the key.After setting the goal, we put it aside.We did not wake up every day talking about lifting the Stanley Cup. We focused on what needed to happen that day. Practice. Conditioning. Recovery. Communication. Accountability. Film sessions. Competing in drills. Supporting teammates. Managing emotions. Preparing mentally and physically.The outcome gave us direction.The process gave us progress.That lesson applies to every part of life.So many people today either become obsessed with the result or they lose motivation because the result feels too far away. They focus so much on the future that they stop being present in the daily work that actually creates success.Championships are not built in one moment.Confidence is not built in one moment.Transformation is not built in one moment.It happens through consistent daily action.One workout at a time.One healthy decision at a time.One conversation at a time.One practice at a time.One choice at a time.The people who perform at a high level understand how to stay present while still keeping a larger vision in mind. They know how to separate goals from daily execution.That is where mindset becomes so important.Pressure often comes from living too far ahead mentally. You start worrying about whether you will succeed, fail, impress people, make money, win the championship, recover from adversity, or achieve your goals.Meanwhile, your power only exists in the present moment.The best athletes and performers are able to bring themselves back to the task directly in front of them.The next shift.The next meeting.The next rep.The next opportunity.That does not mean the goal disappears. The vision remains in the background as fuel and motivation. But your focus stays connected to preparation and execution.This is something I have seen repeatedly, both in sports and in life.The people who grow the most are usually the people who commit to the process without constantly needing immediate results. They trust the work. They understand that progress takes time. They know there will be setbacks, adversity, frustration, and moments where things do not go according to plan.But they continue showing up anyway.That is where real confidence comes from.Confidence is not just positive thinking. Confidence is built through preparation, repetition, resilience, and learning how to stay steady under pressure.Even during difficult moments on our Stanley Cup team, we did not panic and suddenly abandon the process. We trusted our preparation. We trusted each other. We trusted the work we had already put in.That mindset matters everywhere.In business, people often focus so much on the final goal that they burn themselves out chasing quick results.In health and fitness, people become discouraged because they do not see changes fast enough.In parenting, athletes, leadership, and personal growth, people sometimes expect overnight transformation.But meaningful growth rarely happens overnight.The process is where growth lives.The process teaches discipline.The process teaches patience.The process teaches resilience.The process teaches presence.And many times, when you fully commit yourself to the daily process, the outcome begins to take care of itself.That does not mean every goal will happen exactly the way you imagined. Life does not always work that way. Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are a class of antidepressants that increase serotonin and norepinephrine levels in the brain. Common agents include venlafaxine (Effexor XR), desvenlafaxine (Pristiq), duloxetine (Cymbalta), levomilnacipran (Fetzima), and milnacipran (Savella). In addition to treating depression and anxiety disorders, several SNRIs have important pain indications, making them especially useful in patients with neuropathy, fibromyalgia, or chronic musculoskeletal pain. Common adverse effects include nausea, sweating, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, and elevated blood pressure. Clinicians should also remember the significant discontinuation risk associated with shorter half-life agents like venlafaxine and desvenlafaxine. There are moments in the writings of St. Isaac the Syrian where one realizes that what he is speaking about is not “religion” as we commonly understand it at all. He is not concerned with external religiosity, spiritual image, theological sophistication, emotional experiences, or moral performance. He speaks instead about the transformation of the human being into a living place of divine communion. The entire struggle of the ascetic life is directed toward one thing: purity of heart. Not moralism. Not perfectionism. Purity. And purity for Isaac is not primarily about behavior. It is about vision. “The pure in heart shall see God.” The Fathers understood this literally. The heart darkened by distraction, anger, judgment, vanity, endless speech, lust, resentment, self-construction, and immersion in the noise of the world loses the capacity to perceive reality as it truly is. Man ceases to remember God because he has become filled with himself. The tragedy is not simply that we sin. The tragedy is that the heart becomes opaque. Heavy. Fragmented. Unable to behold the Kingdom already present within it. Isaac speaks with terrifying clarity here: “He who restrains his mouth from speech guards his heart from the passions.” Modern man speaks endlessly because he cannot bear silence. We drown ourselves in commentary, analysis, outrage, explanations, arguments, entertainment, notifications, and noise because silence threatens the ego. Silence exposes the inward chaos we spend our lives trying to conceal. But Isaac tells us something almost unbearable: the mysteries of God become visible only in stillness. A wrathful heart cannot behold the mysteries of the Kingdom because wrath keeps the self at the center of reality. A judgmental man may speak about theology endlessly and yet remain entirely estranged from the life of God. A proud man may appear religious and still dwell inwardly in darkness. Why? Because the Kingdom is not perceived through brilliance but through purity. This is why Isaac places such immense emphasis upon guarding the tongue, fleeing gossip, withdrawing from quarrels, avoiding angry speech, and refusing distraction. He is not prescribing pious behavior merely for the sake of morality. He understands something we do not: every movement of the soul either clarifies the heart or darkens it. And so Isaac speaks of continuous remembrance of God. Not occasional remembrance. Not Sunday remembrance. Not remembrance during emotional prayer alone. Continuous remembrance. The modern mind hears this and immediately turns it into technique. But Isaac is not describing a method so much as an identity. Man was created to live in continual orientation toward God. Prayer is not an activity added onto life. Prayer is life restored to its natural condition. This is why Isaac says: “That which befalls a fish out of water, befalls the mind that has come out of the remembrance of God.” What a terrifying image. We imagine ourselves spiritually neutral when we live immersed in distraction, noise, anxiety, worldly conversation, vanity, and continual mental agitation. Isaac says otherwise. The soul outside remembrance gasps for life without understanding why it is suffocating. And this is precisely the condition of modern man. We are overstimulated yet inwardly deadened. Connected constantly yet unable to descend into the heart. Religious perhaps, but incapable of stillness. Surrounded by information while starving for theoria. Isaac uses that extraordinary image of the dolphin moving through the calm sea. When the sea of the heart becomes still from wrath and agitation, divine mysteries begin moving within the soul. The Kingdom is not absent. The heart is simply too turbulent to perceive it. This is why the Fathers fled distraction so fiercely. Not because they hated the world. But because they desired reality. And reality, Isaac tells us, is infinitely more luminous than the fantasies by which we continually feed ourselves. The terrifying thing is that modern people often imagine remembrance of God to be restrictive. In truth, distraction is the prison. Remembrance is freedom. The man who remembers God continually gradually becomes transparent to divine life. His thoughts change. His speech changes. His desires change. His vision changes. Mercy begins appearing naturally. Humility deepens. Judgment weakens. The passions lose their violence because the soul has found greater beauty. Isaac's vision is nothing less than transfiguration. The purified heart becomes Heaven itself. Not symbolically. Actually. “Lo, Heaven is within you.” The human person becomes a living icon of the Kingdom. Scammers rely on a proven formula: Use of a trusted-looking sender Creation of a sense of urgency Sufficient believable details to seem legitimate When you recognize these methods, retirees and their families can more easily spot fraud attempts and prevent the devastating loss of hard-earned assets. Four Scams Every Retiree Needs to Know 1. The Account Takeover Arguably, the most damaging scam involves fraudsters masquerading as your bank or investment firm. It starts innocuously: a text asks if you authorized a transaction. Replying prompts a phone call from a supposed representative. Thanks to massive data breaches, these scammers may already know your personal details — they just need one missing piece. They'll convince you to read out a "security code" sent by your institution. Handing over this code gives the scammer direct account access, allowing them to transfer funds instantly. Importantly, because you authorized the transaction, financial institutions like Charles Schwab often won't reimburse the loss. 2. The Debt Collector Text Message Here, you get a text from a "debt collector" referencing a fictitious account, amount, or government agency. Designed to provoke fear and haste, these messages trick recipients into calling the number provided or clicking a link — both of which compromise your security or lead to unauthorized payments. 3. The Unpaid Toll Notification You receive an alert for a small, believable toll charge. With such a trivial amount, many people click the link and pay without thinking, handing over payment info to scammers who make larger, unauthorized withdrawals. 4. The Fake Invoice Email Sophisticated emails may claim to be from reputable companies like Microsoft, complete with realistic logos and urgent language about an outstanding invoice. The danger here is twofold: opening the attachment can load malware or ransomware onto your device, or responding to the invoice sends money straight to a crook. Always verify the sender before clicking links or attachments. Great Habits for Scam Prevention This is my seven-point toolkit to keep you one step ahead of scammers. Practice these habits consistently to stay safe: Slow Down: Scammers exploit urgency. Pause, breathe, and verify requests. Don't Answer Unknown Numbers: Let unfamiliar calls go to voicemail, especially those spoofing local area codes. Avoid Clicking Suspicious Links: Always visit official websites or use verified contact numbers when responding to alerts or billing issues. Guard Your Personal Information: Never share sensitive info like PINs, passwords, or codes unless you started the interaction. Use Authenticator Apps: These offer extra security beyond SMS-based codes, which can be intercepted. Add Verbal Passwords to Accounts: Financial institutions often allow this as an additional security measure. Assume It's a Scam: When in doubt, err on the side of caution and reach out to institutions through official channels. Diligence is Your Best Defense Scams will continue to evolve, but the best protection comes from vigilance and skepticism. Always vet instructions that involve your money, pause before acting, and confirm legitimacy through direct contact. Your savings represent a lifetime of work; protect them fiercely so they'll serve you for years to come. This podcast is released as part of a collaboration between Fiftyfaces Productions and the Always a Pensions Angle Podcast produced by DG Publishing. Nick Dixon is Head of Pensions, Avon Pension Fund, which he has led since 2022. Avon Pension Fund serves c.140,000 members in the public sector across Bristol, Bath and surrounding areas and is now a partner fund of Local Pensions Partnership. Previously Nick advised private sector wealth platforms on their pensions and investment proposition. He was CIO of Aegon UK from 2013-21, focused on DC workplace pensions. From 2001-13 Nick was Marketing Director for wealth & pensions platform Quilter.Our conversation has a particular focus on an engagement exercise that Avon conducted around the fund's investment in aerospace and defence companies. Nick explained that during 2024 and 2025 the fund received a lot of petitions from its members who were deeply concerned about the war in Gaza, and the indirect role of aerospace and defence companies in supplying Israel. In response to that, a critical stakeholder issue, they conducted a survey of all members. We opened up the issue to bring out a set of trade-offs, including the importance of NATO defence, the concern about arms impacts on the environment, the fact that they kill innocent civilians. The consultation had reasonable engagement - with 11% of the fund members responding, and the result was that 42% wanted to divest, about 47% said they'd like to remain invested, and about 11% said they didn't know. The fund did not consider this a clear mandate to divest – and therefore decided to remain invested.We discuss the importance of engagement generally as well as this critical, sometimes emotive, issue, which has emerged for many local authority pension funds. We reflect on whether surveys and engagement in this way could be a way forward for other funds in the future as these issues continue to gain traction with the underlying beneficiaries and stakeholders.
