This Week in Global Dev: #76: A new World Bank initiative, and an infrastructure project in Africa

This week, we take a look at the Civil Society and Social Innovation Alliance, known as CIVIC, a new, forthcoming World Bank Group initiative designed to support civil society organizations and social economy players. This venture seeks to foster more collaboration in line with the bank's localization agenda, enabling civil society to play a crucial role in addressing global challenges. On the topic of the World Bank, the financial institution announced $23.7 billion in contributions to the International Development Association, or IDA, the bank's fund for providing grants and low-interest loans to 78 low-income countries. This is a 0.8% increase from the last replenishment of $23.5 billion in 2022 but falls short of the $27 billion that some advocates had hoped for. We also discuss the Lobito corridor, which will connect Angola, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo via a rail that runs to the Lobito port in Angola. With many seeing it as a key initiative in the U.S.' efforts to counter China's growing influence, we discuss the chances of it continuing under the Trump administration. To dig into these stories, Devex's Michael Igoe sits down with Aly Rahim, program manager of the Global Partnership for Social Accountability at the World Bank, and Senior Reporter Adva Saldinger for the latest episode of our weekly podcast series. Thousands of Kenyans protested against a finance bill in June that would have increased taxes on many everyday items. This was proposed in part to help pay off loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank, which account for more than 40 percent of the country's foreign debt. But what is Kenya's current fiscal climate? And how are these debts impacting gender equality? On today's episode of The Hidden Economics of Remarkable Women, host Reena Ninan talks with Nairobi-based reporter Sharon Kiburi, who has been following Kenya's debt crisis. Kiburi tells Ninan about her interview with Wanjira Wanjiru, a protest leader against the June finance bill, co-founder of the Mathare Social Justice Centre in Nairobi, and co-host of the Liberating Minds podcast. Then, we hear from Diana Gichengo, the executive director of the Institute for Social Accountability (TISA). She discusses TISA's efforts to engage with the IMF about their program in Kenya, which is largely expected to end in March. Gichengo spoke on a panel organized by Transparency International U.S. and moderated by the Trust, Accountability, and Inclusion (TAI) Collaborative on the sidelines of the IMF/World Bank meetings in October. Guests and organizations:  Sharon Kiburi, journalist based in Nairobi. This is her second time reporting for HERO. Wanjira Wanjiru, co-founder of the Mathare Social Justice Centre and co-host of the Liberating Minds podcast Diana Gichengo, executive director of the Institute for Social Accountability in Kenya   The Hidden Economics of Remarkable Women is a podcast from Foreign Policy, supported in part this season by the Gates Foundation, Northwestern University's Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Affairs, and the Atlantic Council. Debt Distress and the Right to Food in Africa Co-organized by IFPRI and Welthungerhilfe (WHH) October 2, 2024 More than half of low-income countries are at risk of debt distress or have already defaulted. The debt crisis, while exacerbated by recent crises, has been looming for several years. According to the United Nations, 3.3 billion people now live in countries that spend more on interest repayments than on education or health, and in sub-Saharan Africa, governments are spending 53 percent of revenue on debt servicing. What do these debt trends mean for efforts to address food insecurity and uphold citizens' right to food? Twenty years after the adoption of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Right to Food (RtF) by the UN Food and Agricultural Organization, many countries that adopted RtF in their constitutions still face high levels of food and nutrition insecurity. Although the Guidelines incorporate clear guidance on pursuing debt relief to allow for the progressive realization of the RtF, debt repayments and austerity measures, combined with insufficient local revenue mobilization, force governments to re-prioritize scarce resources and undermine investments in food system transformation. In the run-up to the International Development Association (IDA) Replenishment Forum in October 2024 and the release of the African Union's post-Malabo agenda in early 2025, this policy seminar brings together speakers from international and African organizations to examine the impacts of the debt crisis on realizing the RtF in Africa and consider solutions to protect and progressively realize those rights. Opening Remarks Danielle Resnick, Senior Research Fellow, IFPRI (Presentation) Panel Discussion Michael Windfuhr, Deputy Director, German Institute for Human Rights; Member of Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (Presentation) Diana Gichengo, Executive Director, The Institute for Social Accountability, Kenya; Member of African Forum and Network on Debt and Development (AFRODAD) Geeta Sethi, Global Lead for Food Systems, The World Bank Group Jennifer Clapp, University Professor & Canada Research Chair, IPES-Food and University of Waterloo, Canada (Presentation) Nick Jacobs, Consulting Director, IPES-Food (Presentation) Closing Remarks Michael Gabriel, Director of Strategic Partnerships, US and Canada, Welthungerhilfe (WHH) Moderator Charlotte Hebebrand, Director of Communications and Public Affairs, IFPRI Links: More about this Event: https://www.ifpri.org/event/debt-distress-and-the-right-to-food-in-africa/ Subscribe IFPRI Insights newsletter and event announcements at www.ifpri.org/content/newsletter-subscription

#187 How To Utilise ISO Compliance for ESG Reporting

The ISO Show

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 20, 2024 40:13

ESG is a very broad topic to try and address for any organisation, leaving many scratching their heads on where to start with ESG reporting. Currently, there is no official certification for ESG, however there are a number of schemes that will give you either a score or rating for your level of compliance against their requirements. For those currently working towards one of these schemes, you may already have a solid foundation in place if you're certified to one or many ISO Standards. In this episode, Ian Battersby and Ali Henshaw discuss ESG compliance and how elements of an ISO Management system can help with ESG reporting.   You'll learn ·      What is ESG? ·      Is ESG reporting required? ·      Is ESG a nice to have or good solid business practice?  ·      Is ESG certifiable? ·      How can ISO Standards help to address the 3 pillars of ESG? ·      How ESG compliance helps to combat Greenwashing Resources ·      Isologyhub ·      ESG Audit     In this episode, we talk about: [00:30] Join the isologyhub – To get access to a suite of ISO related tools, training and templates. Simply head on over to isologyhub.com to either sign-up or book a demo. [02:00] Episode summary: Ian and Ali will be discussing how ISO Standards can help with ESG reporting.   [02:20] What is ESG? – ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance. Analysis and evaluation against these three elements help organisations to consider different areas within their overall sustainability profile. The Environmental section looks at issues surrounding climate change and actions to address an organisation's environmental responsibility. This includes monitoring and management of your energy consumption, waste management and pollution. It also seeks to tackle how organisations can address, reduce and mitigate their overall environmental impact. The Social aspect is based around the relationships an organisation has with its stakeholders. This is focused on employees and looks at a broad range of topics including employee wellbeing, fair and competitive pay, benefits and human resource related policies. Considerations can also include wider business relationships such as supplier relations, local community and government work. [05:00] The pillars of ESG aren't silos – You shouldn't approach each pillar of ESG in isolation, as they cross over in a lot of areas. For example, in environmental management you may manage hazardous substances, you'll have a duty to ensure those substances don't pollute the surrounding area or bodies of water. However, you will also need to consider the health and safety aspect of storing and working with that material. So already you have 1 issue that crosses both the Environmental and Social pillar of ESG.  [05:50] What does the Governance pillar cover? – Governance criteria focuses on creating a business environment that is fair, transparent, and accountable. Considerations in this area include board composition, fairness in pay structures and executive compensation, business ethics and risk management. [07:05] What types of ESG reporting are required?  – For small organisations, there is currently no set requirement as it stands, but you many encounter stakeholder or customer requirements that encourage ESG reporting on some level. For larger organisations at certain sizes there are mandatory reporting frameworks that you will be required to fulfill. At the moment it's quite sector specific but this is a trend that will only increase over time. Like with anything new, this is likely to trickle down to smaller organisations over time, however there will likely be funding and grants available to assist when that time comes. [08:25] Is ESG a nice to have or good solid business practice?  If you want to be a sustainable business, with good legacy that has the ability to grow and develop, ESG is a fantastic tool. Investors are now looking for sustainable businesses, it's become a market trend for an ever increasingly environmentally conscious consumer base. You either need to move with the times of get left behind, and sustainability is one key factor that will determine which of those categories you fall into. [09:50] Which ISO Standards can support ESG?: From a holistic point of view, the structure of ISO standards, the plan do check Act (PDCA) cycle, the need for monitoring and measurement and the need for improvement supports the principles of ESG in terms of quantifiable results. The additional aspect of having set objectives and proof of tangible improvement actions was something that fulfilled CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), which in turn has been superseded by ESG. ISO Standards high-level structure and life cycle approach lend themselves to support various aspects of ESG, depending on the Standard you implement. ISO 14001 for example, would support the environmental pillar, as it looks at your significant aspects and impacts in addition to that of your supply chain. You'll need to factor these into your objectives and overall business strategy. ISO 45001 would tackle elements of the social pillar as it directly addresses the well-being of your employees. It also includes a clause for the consultation and participation of workers, so work directly with employees to identify and address risks that may be missed by management. [13:40] Is there a certifiable Standard for ESG?: Not currently, but an ISO guidance document is in the works. Standards that address core elements of ESG include ISO 26000 (Social Accountability) and ISO 20400 (Sustainable Procurement). Again, these aren't certifiable, but provide invaluable guidance. Guidance documents have the advantage of being selective in what elements you decide to adopt. The ESG one in development is a good example, ESG as a topic is huge, a smaller organisation may not realistically be able to implement all of the advice. But, it can be used as a starting point for a materiality assessment that will allow you to be selective of the core subjects you apply to your business. The idea of guidance documents is not to be a bolt on, as those quickly get forgotten. It's all about embedding their elements into existing processes. [17:10] Utilising elements of ISO Implementation for ESG reporting:  If you've already got an ISO Management System in place, i.e. ISO 14001 or ISO 45001, then you'll already have objectives, processes  and monitoring & measurement in place to address those elements. ISO 26000 is another good example as it covers a wide range of topics, including human rights, labour practices, the environment, community involvement and development, consumer issues and fair operating practices. Some may not be applicable to you, but as mentioned, it's a guidance document so you have the freedom to be selective about the aspects you incorporate into your management system. You need to decide what really applies to you. It's better to prioritise and take 10 steps on one subject vs 1 on 10 subjects. [20:25] ESG isn't a once a year activity:  There's no tick box exercise that you can do once a year and claim compliance, ESG is an on-going endeavor for as long as your business is running. It's a way of operating, much like ISO Standards. It will develop and grow with your business.   [21:30] Join the isologyhub and get access to limitless ISO resources – From as little as £99 a month, you can have unlimited access to hundreds of online training courses and achieve certification for completion of courses along the way, which will take you from learner to practitioner to leader in no time. Simply head on over to the isologyhub to sign-up or book a demo. [23:36] Will elements of ESG become certifiable down the line? We'll never say never! It's still very much a developing field. There is currently a framework being developed by the International Standards Organisation, it's currently in draft form.   Ali herself is on the commenting committee for it's development, and can confirm that the framework is looking at the links between certifiable Standards and the tangible application.   ISO Standards require third-party verification of your claims before getting certified. In that aspect, they're the perfect tool to provide tangible proof that you are doing what you say you're doing, but only in select aspects.   ESG is broad, almost too broad to certify. It's not really feasible for one person to come in and assess a whole business like they would do for an ISO Assessment, there's simply too much to cover!   [25:00] The trouble with ESG verification: Currently, a lot of voluntary schemes require you to report against and fulfill, but they are very sector specific because a general one would be too broad and likely will not cover every aspect appliable to every business. Schemes out there are doing something to battle greenwashing, as the environmental aspects are easier to verify, however social aspects are a lot more tricky and can get even more complicated outside of the UK where there is no HSE annual reporting available. [26:20] How can you support the Social aspect of ESG?: Measuring your social value can difficult, many think of education as the solution. Here are some ideas to consider: ·      Working with local schools – Improvement projects driven by Student run business studies ·      Work experience ·      Charitable work – allow staff to have a charity day as part of a benefits package [28:10] How can we prevent the greenwashing of ESG compliance?: Government Bodies are working to tackle this. It's being built into legislation to prevent greenwashing in future where self-policing hasn't gone far enough. Trade Associations are also pushing their members towards more legitimate frameworks to ensure they do remain accountable and transparent about their activities in relation to ESG compliance. [30:00] What resources do Blackmores have to help? We've developed an ESG Gap Analysis, based on the guidance provided in ISO 26000 Social Accountability. This ESG Gap Analysis will highlight where you're already compliant and where there is work to be done. You may be surprised to see that you're more compliant that you think! Especially if you're certified to one or many ISO Standards. We also have a Materiality Assessment, which will help you to determine which topics are of importance to your business and your stakeholders. You can take the findings from both to help develop your ESG Strategy. If you're not mandated to do any reporting, you can leave it at that. However, you may want to consider sector specific frameworks to get ahead of the curve for when elements of ESG do become mandated down the line. [36:00] Where should you start with tackling ESG using ISO Standards? If you're certified to one or many ISO Standards, then you will have processes in place that can support an ESG initiative program strategy, and you can make it as big or as small as you want. Start by looking at your environmental, social and governments impacts and work to embed ESG into your existing ISO Management System before they become mandated by stakeholders and legislation – being ahead also feeds into the principles behind social responsibility. You're embedding a culture, and it becomes a norm which can be developed further. Then, when legislation or customer requirements come in, you're already prepared to answer. Also, with ESG there is a focus on people and you can't have a successful business without good people. ESG isn't only attractive to your customers, but also to potential employees who will want to work for ethical, sustainable businesses. If you aren't keeping up and fulfilling that, you will struggle to find new talent. It also goes without saying that being ESG compliant will attract consumers. Greenwashing, as frustrating as it is, exists for a reason - because people want businesses to be sustainable. People wouldn't lie about it if it wasn't important to someone, so stand out by beating the greenwashing allegations and take the right steps towards tacking ESG. Driven by an urgent desire to create a more equitable healthcare system, Dr. Malika Fair was determined to make a difference - but she never expected that her mission would also spark a revolution in the medical profession. With a relentless commitment to social accountability, she is leading the charge to empower marginalized patients and inspire a new generation of physicians to prioritize inclusion. How will her bold initiative shape the future of healthcare?I wake up every day to solve problems, to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. My special guest is Dr. Malika FairDr. Malika Fair, a trailblazer in health equity, serves as the Senior Director of Equity and Social Accountability for the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). As an emergency physician by training, Dr. Fair brings her experience and passion for addressing healthcare disparities to create a more equitable healthcare system. Inspired by her father and mentored by Dr. Marcia Perry, she has dedicated her career to advocating for marginalized communities and promoting health equity. Dr. Fair plays a pivotal role in developing competencies around diversity, equity, and inclusion for medical students, residents, and faculty. She believes in the power of collective efforts to transform healthcare and ensure everyone can achieve their health goals. This is Dr. Malika Fair's story:Dr. Malika Fair's journey into healthcare began when her father brought her an article discussing inequities in HIV/AIDS medication in South Africa. The challenges faced by people on the other side of the world inspired her to work towards solving problems in the healthcare system. Shadowing her mentor, Dr. Marcia Perry, Malika discovered her passion for emergency medicine and the need to improve healthcare for patients with marginalized identities. She now focuses on integrating social accountability into healthcare systems, ensuring that physicians are not only responsible but also accountable for their patient's well-being.In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Discover the key factors for attaining health equity in underprivileged communities. 2. Uncover the benefits of incorporating social responsibility within healthcare systems. 3. Recognize the significance of implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) competencies in professional settings. 4. Learn about the value of encouraging DEI training in medical education. 5. Find out how to effectively tackle obstacles when executing health equity policies.Health Equity and Social AccountabilityUnderstanding health equity and social accountability is crucial in tackling disparities and promoting better healthcare outcomes for all. Health equity refers to the equal opportunity for all individuals to achieve their full health potential, regardless of social or economic status, ethnicity, or other factors. Social accountability, on the other hand, involves implementing systems of accountability to guarantee the best healthcare experience for everyone. Dr. Malika Fair shares her passion for health equity and emphasizes the importance of incorporating social accountability in every aspect of the medical field. During the podcast, Dr. Fair explains the difference between social accountability and social responsibility, stressing the need for systems that ensure patients have the best chance of achieving total health. By developing a set of competencies revolving around diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), Dr. Fair hopes medical students, residents, and physicians alike will integrate these principles into their practice and ultimately create more equitable healthcare services. The resources mentioned in this episode are: Integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion competencies into medical school and residency curricula to ensure physicians are prepared to provide care for diverse patient populations. Develop resources and support for faculty development in diversity, equity, and inclusion to facilitate learning and co-creation of new approaches to healthcare. Encourage medical institutions to work collectively in redesigning curricula, reviewing materials for diverse representation, and fostering a culture of continuous education on health equity and social accountability. Collaborate with students and faculty interested in promoting health equity, diversity, and inclusion to create a supportive environment for learning and growth. Engage with diverse communities to better understand cultural practices and preferences in healthcare, incorporating this knowledge into medical education and practice. Utilize the AAMC's competencies around diversity, equity, and inclusion to develop individualized learning and teaching plans that meet the unique needs of each physician and institution. Continuously update and revise medical education materials and approaches to reflect the latest research and understanding of health equity, diversity, and inclusion in healthcare. Advocate for policies and practices that promote health equity and social accountability at the institutional, local, and national levels. Encourage open dialogue and collaboration between healthcare providers, educators, and communities to address health disparities and promote equity in healthcare access and outcomes. Manuela Valle-Castro remembers growing up in a home where social justice was frequently part of the dinner-table conversation. She spent the first six years of her life in exile, after her family joined thousands of Chileans fleeing Augusto Pinochet's oppressive political regime. Upon her family's return to Chile, she watched her parents and their friends organize and push back, even when dissent could lead to jail time, torture, or death. "It wasn't a very conventional way of growing up," said Valle-Castro, who watched her loved ones document human rights violations, and rally against injustice. "I had a voice I wanted to use for things I felt passionate about," she said. Valle-Castro eventually moved to Canada, where she trained as a community psychologist, completing her PhD in Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice at the University of British Columbia. "I looked up to Canada," said Valle-Castro. "But what I did not know was how much of Canada's identity has been created over a layer of colonialism that is very violent." In 2020, she was hired as the Director of the College of Medicine's Division of Social Accountability.  In medical training and biomedical research, Valle-Castro's job is to tackle and dismantle bias and unconscious discrimination. In this episode, she discusses the 'extreme politeness' ingrained in Canadian culture, and why it often tends to oppress and silence marginalized people. "It's not necessarily about racist slurs and impolite words," she said. "[Oppression] can come in a very benevolent and polite shape too." She said the key to health equity is to listen, promote, and act on advice from racialized people, immigrants, those with disabilities and different lived experiences.  "Research needs to not be redundant," she said. "How many times do we need to study bad housing or bad water before those issues are addressed?" "I see a need for this shift all over the College of Medicine," she said, noting indigenous academic leaders have already taken the lead in changing Saskatchewan's dominant narrative. Medical trainees, researchers and faculty all need to become more outspoken about their work, Valle-Castro said, pushing governments and decision-makers to take action. "There's no research that happens in a void," she said. "Make those decisions transparent and have people be accountable for those decisions." Valle-Castro said the end goal for the College of Medicine is better health for all people in Saskatchewan, not just the able-bodied white population. "Community engagement and health equity need to be absolutely at the forefront," she said.

Michael Fitzgerald - ‘Phenomenological interpretations of patient engagement in research’

Season five of our podcast continues with another presentation from our 2020 annual conference: ‘Engaged Phenomenology’ Online. This episode features Michael Fitzgerald, Bruyère Research Institute. Fitzgerald’s co-authors are Esther Shoemaker, Simon Fraser University; Lisa Boucher, University of Ottawa; Claire Kendall, Bruyère Research Institute.   ABSTRACT: This paper draws on Husserl’s notions of epoché and phenomenological reduction to interpret patient engagement in research. The epoché suspends or bracket naturalistic assumptions about the existence of the world, so as to allow phenomenological inquiry to focus on meaning or significance. Phenomenological reduction to the life-world, in turn, functions to restore the significance of the concrete world of basic life, i.e., to allow the phenomenologist access to the structures of meaning that are the basis for all inquiry (Luft 2004). In particular, it suspends the assumptions of the positive sciences. Patient engagement in research is an approach that includes patients and caregivers as partners on the research team. Arguably, this approach has become the standard for a wide variety, if not all, types of health research, driven in part by funding agency imperatives. Studies of this approach have argued that the significance of and motivation for engaging patients can be understood in terms of three sets of values: “moral or normative (e.g., empowerment and rights), instrumental or substantive (e.g., improving research quality), and process (e.g., having to do with research conduct)” (Kendall et al. 2018). However, further investigation is needed into the impact of patient engagement in research, and in particular how it affects health researchers’ own understanding of their research activities, exploration of which has so far been limited (Staley 2015; 2017). This paper proposes a phenomenological approach, in which patient engagement is seen as a transformation of research. We suggest that patient engagement in research can function as an epoché or even a type of reduction, by challenging researchers’ assumptions about the process of research. As with the life-world reduction, this can be seen as a way of resituating health research in the life-world, so as to expand and deepen its meaning and significance.   BIOS:    Michael Fitzgerald, Research Associate, Bruyère Research Institute, Ottawa, Canada, is a social phenomenologist with expertise in the phenomenology of international development. He works on projects on patient engagement, intersectionality and social accountability.   Esther Shoemaker, Postdoctoral Fellow, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada, and Affiliated Scientist, Bruyère Research Institute, is a medical sociologist and early career researcher with sex- and gender-based mixed methods expertise in health services delivery for marginalized populations.   Lisa Boucher, PhD candidate in Epidemiology and Public Health, University of Ottawa, has expertise in participatory research approaches and both quantitative and qualitative methods. Her projects focus on highly marginalized populations, especially people who use illicit drugs.   Claire Kendall, a primary care physician and Clinical Scientist, Bruyère Research Institute and Associate Professor, University of Ottawa, where she is also Assistant Dean, Social Accountability, has expertise in health services research, cohort and administrative data linkages, systematic reviews, participatory approaches, qualitative research and practice-based interventions, with strong links to policy makers in primary care of marginalized populations.   This recording is taken from the BSP Annual Conference 2020 Online: 'Engaged Phenomenology'. Organised with the University of Exeter and sponsored by Egenis and the Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health. BSP2020AC was held online this year due to global concerns about the Coronavirus pandemic. This allows them to feel less of that “overwhelm” symptoms and to achieve a sense of freedom and to enjoy their lives.Mark has a productivity themed podcast called “The Mark Struczewski Podcast,” that has OVER 435 episodes!  Praise God! In his time with us today, he will share with you some strategies on how to be more productive in this distraction filled world. In addition, Mark is, in his own words, “Sold Out For Jesus!” Praise God! Is LinkedIn a better value for business branding any other social media? You talk about “Social Accountability.” What is that and how does it work? I know, in my day, I’m in contact with people through the computer most of the day. Some phone calls. But mostly online. What are some of the advantages of that as compared to face to face meetings? AND, let’s look at the flip side, what are some of the disadvantages and things to watch out for? Now, I was surprised to read that you, as a productivity expert, you say it is ok to watch TV or play video games?  Is that right? How can that improve productivity? Now, earlier in the interview, you said that one of the top distractions is OURSELVES?  What do you mean by that? And, I guess, how can we “Fix” ourselves so we do not distract ourselves? I read on your blog, an article titled, “How NOT to be productive.” That caught my attention. Basically, you said that you need to have the attitude of Winnie the Pooh instead of Eeyore. I loved that article. Can you give us summary of the tongue in cheek article you wrote? I tend to schedule EVERYTHING on my calendar, on my phone. I used to carry around a pocket calendar, then moved to a day planner, but now, it’s all on my phone. Whenever I’m at the doctor office and they go to fill out the little card for the next appointment, even if it’s a year from now, I tell them, “No, I have to put in the my phone.” Because, I’ve been saying this for a few years, “If it’s not in the phone it is not going to happen.” I have also tried the “to do” lists. But I have not had as much success with that. It seems like, from a list of 7 things, the first 3 get done and then the list gets added to for the next day and after about 4 or 5 days, I just trash it. I never have been able to just go down the list crossing everything off. Is that normal or is it just “me?” That, I believe is on your website as you “BIGGEST PRODUCTIVITY TIP.”  Basically, it is to write things down instead of trying to remember them. I can’t agree more. As we are getting ready to close, it seems time just flies by when are having great discussions, can you tell the listeners about your 7 Day Productivity Challenge? Mark, I appreciate your time in coming on and sharing all of this with our listeners today. If someone wanted to reach out to you, ask a question or maybe even do an interview such as this, how can they get in touch with you? I’ll be putting links to all of this in the show notes. Folks, who out there does not want to be more productive? Not just in your job, but LIFE itself. There is not any area of your life that cannot be improved upon. Not one. From school to work, from recreation activities to church and bible study time. You can improve and become more productive. I encourage you to reach out to Mark and allow him to help you. It is not every day you get an opportunity to contact someone that can actually help you to become more productive!  Praise God!  Reach out to him!  The links are below! In addition, Mark is, in his own words, “Sold Out For Jesus!” Praise God! I know I have had to cut back my social media time. I’m probably on there now about 15 minutes two to three times per day. I try to limit it to twice per day, but there are times I jump on to either message someone or I get an email that someone messaged me. But I found myself, a few months back, getting hooked into social media for 2-3 hours and not even realize it.  Do you find that is common occurrence? Or am I the weird one? What about email? That can be as distracting as social media. How can someone “tame the beast” so to speak, of social media?  Isn’t social media kind of “required” in business trends today? Is it worth the time and effort to use something like Hootsuite or something similar? Or hire a VA? Is LinkedIn a better value for business branding any other social media? You talk about “Social Accountability.” What is that and how does it work? I know, in my day, I’m in contact with people through the computer most of the day. Some phone calls. But mostly online. After the gift-giving holidays – Hanukkah and Christmas – homes and apartments are bursting at the seams with more stuff.  Knick-knacks, novelties, gewgaws, tchotchkes, odds and ends of all sorts are crowding out space where the familiar stuff currently resides. For most of us, parting with some old familiar goodies requires a change in behavior.  And if you want to make that change, there’s hope! This episode offers some behavioral science to help you with the process. One of the biggest things you need to overcome is Status Quo Bias. This is the big hairy elephant in the room. We love to hang on to old stuff, in part because our default is to keep stuff, not get rid of it – that’s the status quo. Ridding yourself of old stuff to make way for the new requires overcoming this intensely powerful default.  Priming. Begin your journey to unload stuff by opening up 3 or 4 bags or boxes and laying them in plain sight. You’re more likely to fill them if they’re open and ready to use than if you must fetch a new one each time you fill the previous one. Make the choice to give something away as easy as possible.  Joint Comparison.  If you only look at one item at a time, you’ll find a good reason to keep it. Force yourself to compare two or three like items and to rid yourself of one of them. That way, you’re creating an environment where you might say: “This old cookie-sheet is in worse shape than this other cookie sheet and, since I haven’t used it in a year, I’ll give it away.” Social Accountability. The best solution for cleaning out a kitchen, bathroom or garage to make way for newer things is to enlist the help of a trusted friend or relative. Ideally, they could become recipients for some of your gently-used items; however, the important thing is that having a comrade-in-arms will reduce the probability of assigning ‘save’ to items best identified as ‘give away.’ When/Then Statement. Use a commitment statement to orient your actions, such as, “When I get home from work on Friday night, then I’m going to set out my packing boxes.” And, “When I wake up on Saturday morning, then I’m going to start cleaning out my closet.” Getting rid of stuff can be difficult, but when space begins to run short, you’re going to be forced to make some decisions. You want plenty of room for all the new stuff that you just received as gifts, don’t you? Then get started!
