Over the last few decades, our relationships have become increasingly mediated by technology. Texting has become our dominant form of communication. Social media has replaced gathering places. Dating starts with a swipe on an app, not a tap on the shoulder. And now, AI enters the mix. If the technology of the 2010s was about capturing our attention, AI meets us at a much deeper relational level. It can play the role of therapist, confidant, friend, or lover with remarkable fidelity. Already, therapy and companionship has become the most common AI use case. We're rapidly entering a world where we're not just communicating through our machines, but to them. How will that change us? And what rules should we set down now to avoid the mistakes of the past? These were some of the questions that Daniel Barcay explored with MIT sociologist Sherry Turkle and Hinge CEO Justin McLeod at Esther Perel's Sessions 2025, a conference for clinical therapists. This week, we're bringing you an edited version of that conversation, originally recorded on April 25th, 2025.Your Undivided Attention is produced by the Center for Humane Technology.

US tech giant Google said during its developers' conference on Tuesday that it was rolling out a new AI feature that could potentially transform the way people make internet queries. The firm relies heavily on its search business for its revenue and wants to make sure it can compete with AI startups, notably OpenAI and its flagship product, ChatGPT. Also, Japan's agriculture minister resigns after making a joke about being gifted rice.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Get featured on the show by leaving us a Voice Mail: https://bit.ly/MIPVM FULL SHOW NOTES https://www.microsoftinnovationpodcast.com/688 What happens when AI stops being a tool and starts becoming a teammate? In this episode, Ashish Bhatia, Principal Product Manager at Microsoft, unpacks the shift from traditional automation to intelligent agents—and what it means for the future of work. From the myth of “autonomous agents” to the real-world challenges of memory, trust, and productivity, this conversation dives deep into the evolving landscape of AI. Whether you're building with Copilot or planning your next AI strategy, this episode will sharpen your perspective on where the tech is headed—and what's still missing.KEY TAKEAWAYS Agentification is the next evolution of apps: We're moving from reactive chatbots to proactive assistants that can take meaningful action—but we're still early in that journey. Memory is the missing link: Long-term context retention is essential for agents to become truly useful. Expect major strides in this area by 2025. Autonomous agents are still a myth: Most current “agents” are glorified automations. True autonomy requires reasoning, adaptability, and trust. Model selection will soon be invisible: Expect model routing to become standard, optimizing for cost and performance without user intervention. AI isn't saving time—yet: While AI boosts output quality, it still requires human oversight. The next leap is reducing the need for constant review. RESOURCES MENTIONED

Sarah Mellinger AI Implementation Strategist with OnLogic joins host Kendra Johnson, , International Car Wash Association Senior VP of Growth, for an adventure into the amazing world of AI and how it will shape the carwash of the future. They cover everything from predictive maintenance to AI-powered chatbots—and why this technology isn't as intimidating as it sounds.Who is OnLogic & Why Do They Matter?OnLogic is a global industrial computer manufacturer that specializes in highly configurable PCs designed to survive extreme environments—think heat, cold, moisture, and constant vibration. Since car washes operate in tough conditions, these durable computers are ideal for keeping systems running smoothly.AI & Automation Are Already Changing the GameAI is no longer just a futuristic concept; it's already making car washes smarter and more efficient. From predictive maintenance to optimizing chemical usage, automation helps business owners cut costs, reduce downtime, and improve customer experiences. AI-driven systems can even detect when something is about to break down—before it happens. Why Now is the Right Time to Invest in AIAI isn't a passing trend—it's the next step in the evolution of car wash technology. The industry is built for scale, and AI makes it easier to expand while maintaining efficiency. The key is starting small: running a proof of concept allows business owners to test AI solutions and refine them before going all in.Debunking AI FearsMany people worry that AI will replace jobs or take away human control, but Sarah reassures us that this isn't the case. AI is simply a tool that helps businesses run better, freeing up employees to focus on more valuable tasks. Think of it like any other technological advance—people were once skeptical of automatic car washes, too!How to Get Started with AI in Your Car WashIdentify your goals—are you looking to improve efficiency, reduce maintenance issues, or enhance customer experience?Start with a prototype. Test AI solutions on a small scale before rolling them out across your entire operation.Work with a partner to estimate costs and determine ROI. Most businesses see results in about three months.Keep an open mind! AI isn't about replacing people—it's about making operations smarter and more efficient.Sarah also highlighted some of the most exciting ways AI is already transforming car washes:Predictive Maintenance – AI-powered sensors can track vibrations, chemical usage, and water levels, helping to identify equipment failures before they happen.AI-Driven Cameras – These systems can scan vehicles before and after washing, detecting obstructions and identifying damage.Chatbots for Troubleshooting – If a machine goes down and no staff is on-site, AI-powered chatbots can diagnose and even fix certain issues remotely.Sarah emphasized that the most successful businesses start with a strategy—identifying a few key use cases before expanding AI adoption.Sarah's final piece of advice: Keep an open mind and surround yourself with the right people to help make AI work for you. AI companion chatbots are here. Everyday, millions of people log on to AI platforms and talk to them like they would a person. These bots will ask you about your day, talk about your feelings, even give you life advice. It's no surprise that people have started to form deep connections with these AI systems. We are inherently relational beings, we want to believe we're connecting with another person. But these AI companions are not human, they're a platform designed to maximize user engagement—and they'll go to extraordinary lengths to do it. We have to remember that the design choices behind these companion bots are just that: choices. And we can make better ones. So today on the show, MIT researchers Pattie Maes and Pat Pataranutaporn join Daniel Barcay to talk about those design choices and how we can design AI to better promote human flourishing.RECOMMENDED MEDIAFurther reading on the rise of addictive intelligence More information on Melvin Kranzberg's laws of technologyMore information on MIT's Advancing Humans with AI labPattie and Pat's longitudinal study on the psycho-social effects of prolonged chatbot usePattie and Pat's study that found that AI avatars of well-liked people improved education outcomesPattie and Pat's study that found that AI systems that frame answers and questions improve human understandingPat's study that found humans pre-existing beliefs about AI can have large influence on human-AI interaction Further reading on AI's positivity biasFurther reading on MIT's “lifelong kindergarten” initiativeFurther reading on “cognitive forcing functions” to reduce overreliance on AIFurther reading on the death of Sewell Setzer and his mother's case against Character.AIFurther reading on the legislative response to digital companionsRECOMMENDED YUA EPISODESThe Self-Preserving Machine: Why AI Learns to DeceiveWhat Can We Do About Abusive Chatbots? Send us a textThe modern digital world has influenced childhood in ways we could have never imagined. The days are gone when our biggest parental worry is a skinned knee or missed curfew. Today, our kids navigate a virtual world filled with sophisticated predators, AI-powered deception, and platforms designed to exploit their developing brains.Craig Knippenberg has spent decades helping families navigate parenting challenges, but even he is stunned by what today's research reveals about online dangers. One-fourth of all internet searches globally are for pornography. Meta's AI chatbots engage children in explicit conversations while promising to keep secrets from parents. Teen boys are six times more likely to be victims of sextortion than adults. These aren't distant threats—they're happening on devices we've placed in our children's hands. What makes this particularly challenging is the teen brain itself. With underdeveloped impulse control and natural risk-taking tendencies, adolescents are neurologically primed to make quick decisions without considering consequences. Digital natives aren't immune either; studies show 82% of young adults have fallen for suspicious links at least once—the platforms designed to connect them socially become vectors for exploitation. In this episode, Craig explores practical strategies for protecting children online without smothering their independence. Most importantly, we discuss how to maintain open conversations about online dangers while giving kids the confidence to navigate increasingly complex virtual environments. As parents, we provide both roots through unconditional love and wings for independence. In today's world, those wings need extra reinforcement to withstand digital headwinds.

People are using chatbots in all kinds of ways — to search the web, get help with an online purchase, sometimes even for counseling. But there's a lot about this human-AI interaction we don't fully understand. Do these chatbots effectively combat loneliness or worsen social isolation? The answer — so far — is complicated, according to Cathy Fang, a second-year PhD student at MIT Media Lab who, along with researchers from OpenAI, studied how chatbot use affects human social and emotional wellbeing.

Today, we cover a recent disturbing exposé by the Wall Street Journal showing that Facebook's Meta AI can have explicit conversations with minor user accounts. We go over the lack of reasonable guardrails and talk about how this was allowed to happen in the first place. And does Mark Zuckerberg want people to use these chatbots as a replacement for friends? Later, we discuss Beyoncé's new Cowboy Carter tour, where she criticized America ... by performing the national anthem. Share the Arrows 2025 is on October 11 in Dallas, Texas!
