From exhibitions to the broader museum world, she reflects on the vital work of archivists in ensuring that even the quietest and oppressed voices are heard.
They worked Virginia's tobacco fields, South Carolina's rice marshes, and the Black Belt's cotton plantations. Wherever they lived, enslaved people found their lives indelibly shaped by the Southern environment. By day, they plucked worms and insects from the crops, trod barefoot in the mud as they hoed rice fields, and endured the sun and humidity as they planted and harvested the fields. By night, they clandestinely took to the woods and swamps to trap opossums and turtles, to visit relatives living on adjacent plantations, and at times to escape slave patrols and escape to freedom. Scars on the Land: An Environmental History of Slavery in the American South (Oxford UP, 2022) is the first comprehensive history of American slavery to examine how the environment fundamentally formed enslaved people's lives and how slavery remade the Southern landscape. Over two centuries, from the establishment of slavery in the Chesapeake to the Civil War, one simple calculation had profound consequences: rather than measuring productivity based on outputs per acre, Southern planters sought to maximize how much labor they could extract from their enslaved workforce. They saw the landscape as disposable, relocating to more fertile prospects once they had leached the soils and cut down the forests. On the leading edge of the frontier, slavery laid waste to fragile ecosystems, draining swamps, clearing forests to plant crops and fuel steamships, and introducing devastating invasive species. On its trailing edge, slavery left eroded hillsides, rivers clogged with sterile soil, and the extinction of native species. While environmental destruction fueled slavery's expansion, no environment could long survive intensive slave labor. The scars manifested themselves in different ways, but the land too fell victim to the slave owner's lash. Although typically treated separately, slavery and the environment naturally intersect in complex and powerful ways, leaving lasting effects from the period of emancipation through modern-day reckonings with racial justice. How do you guide a workforce through the fastest shift in technology most of us have seen in our careers? That question shaped my conversation with David Martin from BCG, who works at the intersection of talent, culture, and AI. He joined me from New York, with Amelia listening in, and quickly painted a clear picture of what is really happening inside global enterprises right now. We started with the widening split between AI fluent teams and those stuck in endless pilots. David explained why the organizations getting results are the ones doing fewer things with far greater ambition. Many others scatter energy across small use cases, save minutes instead of hours, and never reach a scale where value becomes visible. Training surfaced early as one of the biggest gaps. Not surface level workshops, but the deeper hands-on learning that helps people change how they work. David described why frontline teams lag behind, why engineers still miss major capabilities, and how leadership behaviour dramatically affects adoption. Curiosity and communication play a bigger role than most expect. We explored the move from isolated AI experiments to real workflow transformation. David shared examples from engineering, customer service, and operations where companies are finally seeing measurable results. He also explained why agents remain underused, with hesitation, data quality, and unfamiliarity still slowing progress. Shadow AI added another layer, with half of workers already using tools outside corporate systems. The conversation returned often to people. David outlined BCG's 10-20-70 rule, showing why technology is never the main bottleneck. Culture, roles, and process make or break outcomes. Leaders who provide clarity and a sense of direction see faster adoption. Those who remain hesitant create uncertainty that spreads across teams almost instantly. As we looked toward 2026, David shared cautious optimism. He sees huge potential in areas like healthcare and sustainability, along with a wave of workflow redesign that will reshape daily work. His own learning habits are simple, from podcasts to regular reading, and driven by a desire to set a strong example for his children as they grow into a world shaped by AI. "Curiosity isn't a soft skill. It's a performance capability—and organizations are paying the price for ignoring it." In this On the Brink with Andi Simon episode, Dr. Deborah Clary, author of The Curiosity Curve, explains why curiosity is a measurable driver of performance, engagement, and innovation—and how leaders can deliberately rebuild it to create stronger, more human-centered cultures. Why Curiosity May Be the Missing Link in Leadership and Culture Change In this episode of On the Brink with Andi Simon, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Deborah Clary, author of The Curiosity Curve and a purpose-driven leader whose work sits at the intersection of leadership development, organizational culture, and performance. What emerged from our conversation was both refreshing and deeply needed: a reminder that curiosity—something many leaders unintentionally abandon as they rise—may be the very capability organizations need most right now . Deborah's journey is anything but linear. Straight out of business school, she began her career not in a corporate office but as a route driver for Frito-Lay in Detroit—wearing a uniform, managing a route, and learning leadership from the inside out. That truck, she says, became her classroom. Over the next four decades, Deborah moved through senior roles at Coca-Cola, Jack Daniel's, and Humana, eventually earning a PhD focused on leadership development and organizational design. Yet it was her growing fascination with human behavior—what makes leaders effective and cultures thrive—that ultimately shaped her work today . What Is Curiosity—Really? Deborah defines curiosity simply but powerfully: being genuinely interested in yourself, in others, and in the situation at hand. It's not about having the right answers. It's about asking better questions—and staying open long enough to explore them. That distinction matters, especially in organizations where leaders often believe their role is to know, decide, and direct. As Deborah shared, many leaders become "incurious" not because they lack interest, but because time pressures, performance demands, and past success reinforce the idea that they must always have the answer. Over time, curiosity is treated like a luxury—when in fact, research shows it is a driver of performance . The Engagement Crisis—and Why Leaders Matter More Than Ever One of the most striking parts of our conversation focused on employee disengagement. Gallup data shows engagement levels at historic lows, with millennials—now a critical segment of the leadership pipeline—showing especially high levels of disengagement. When Deborah and her research team conducted focus groups, they found a consistent theme: "My leader doesn't know me—and doesn't seem to care to know me." This wasn't about surface-level recognition or personal details. Employees wanted leaders to be curious about their ideas, their aspirations, and how they could contribute meaningfully. In other words, they wanted leaders who asked thoughtful questions instead of simply providing directives. Curiosity, Measured—and Made Actionable What makes Deborah's work especially compelling is that curiosity isn't treated as a vague personality trait. Through a validated assessment, she measures curiosity across four dimensions: Exploration Openness to new ideas Inspirational creativity Focused engagement In one executive team she worked with, the results revealed a powerful—and uncomfortable—truth. While most executives scored high in curiosity, the CEO did not. The organization was struggling with innovation, market share, and retention. When the data was shared openly, the CEO recognized that his resistance—not the team—was the bottleneck. His willingness to acknowledge this became a breakthrough moment for the organization . That story underscores a central theme of the episode: leaders shape culture not by intention alone, but by how open—or closed—they are to curiosity. Watch our podcast on YouTube. From Short-Term Answers to Long-Term Leadership Curious leadership, Deborah explained, is about playing the long game. The short game is giving answers. The long game is exploring possibilities, testing ideas, and learning from outcomes—even when they fail. This requires psychological safety. Leaders must normalize statements like, "I don't know—let's explore this together."When leaders model curiosity, they give others permission to think, experiment, and grow. Over time, this builds confidence, ownership, and engagement across the organization . Why This Matters Now? In fast-changing markets, yesterday's solutions rarely solve tomorrow's problems. Yet many organizations still rely on outdated assumptions, rigid hierarchies, and fear of failure. As an anthropologist, I see this pattern often: cultures resist change even when change is essential. Curiosity interrupts that pattern. It helps leaders see what they've been missing, hear voices that have been quiet, and test new ways forward. In Deborah's words, curiosity is contagious—and learnable. It can be rebuilt, one question at a time. If you're a leader navigating uncertainty, disengaged teams, or stalled innovation, this conversation offers both insight and hope. You don't need all the answers. But you do need the courage to ask better questions. And that may be exactly what helps you—and your organization—get off the brink. Histoire du populisme en France, XIXᵉ-XXIᵉ siècle» (Gallimard), un essai qui retrace un siècle et demi de mouvements qualifiés d'«antisystème» et interroge la pertinence du terme «populisme» dans l'histoire politique française. Dès le début de l'émission, Marc Lazar, qui est aussi un expert reconnu de la vie politique italienne, nous propose une définition du populisme. Moins simple qu'il n'y paraît. L'ouvrage couvre la période qui va du boulangisme sous la IIIè République jusqu'aux mobilisations contemporaines des «Gilets jaunes». Marc Lazar met en parallèle des figures et mouvements très différents : Boulanger, Marine Le Pen, Mélenchon, Bernard Tapie, les maoïstes, etc., autant de personnages, autant de populismes, pourrait-on dire. Fil rouge de ces personnalités politiques ? La référence au peuple comme entité unifiée et la dénonciation des élites, deux traits constitutifs du discours populiste. L'auteur s'interroge : «Cette récurrence pose question» note-t-il. Avec sa clarté et sa précision habituelles, Marc Lazar analyse au micro, et dans son livre, le caractère multiple et controversé du terme «populisme». Ses acteurs poursuivent, en effet, des objectifs politiques souvent contradictoires : certains prônent une démocratie directe, d'autres un autoritarisme charismatique autour du «grand leader». Selon cet expert, les populismes ne sont pas des accidents, mais des forces profondes qui imposent des transformations durables à la vie politique française et européenne. Ils révèlent une crise de la représentation et une défiance croissante envers les institutions. En cela, ils représentent un danger. Clairement, le populisme n'est pas une nouveauté dans la politique française, mais une réponse récurrente aux crises de la démocratie représentative.
