In this episode of In Development, Ryan and Olivia chat with Travis Fong, President and Executive Director of YEGarden Suites. Travis shares about his passion for sustainability, its impact on urbanization and housing, and how YEGarden Suites came to be founded. From building for family proximity, to aging in place, to rental income, Travis dives into the main driving factors for this built form. Listen to the full episode to hear Travis outline the challenges for garden suite development, the growth and evolution of YEGarden Suites, and his thoughts on the future of housing typologies with Edmonton's Zoning Bylaw Renewal initiative. Originally from Halifax, Travis moved to Edmonton after graduating from Dalhousie University with an Honours BA in Sustainability and Political Science, with a minor in Economics. Travis also holds a Masters degree in Economics from the University of Waterloo. Travis's studies focused on the efficiency and growth of cities from an environmental and financial sustainability lens.Following the completion of his undergraduate degree, Travis worked on multiple development projects including affordable seniors housing and renewable energy. In 2017, Travis co-founded YEGarden Suites, a non-profit that functions as an advocacy, education, and awareness organization to support the densification of Edmonton through homeowner-driven development. Through policy advocacy and citizen empowerment, YEGarden Suites has supported tens of millions of dollars of homeowner led investment into this housing form. Understanding the policy framework, and economic underpinnings behind Edmonton's larger development strategy served the organization well as they proposed changes and alterations to the regulations which were arbitrarily restrictive and reducing positive housing outcomes. Edmonton's backyard housing regulations are now among the strongest in North America, and Travis now serves as President and Executive Director of YEGarden Suites, and strives to deliver extraordinary value to homeowners who are considering making an investment on their own.
In our third episode, Jaime Kirkpatrick, senior program manager of Blue Green Canada, discusses the need for a Just Transition, what it should look like for labour, and how Canada is doing in its move toward a clean energy economy. Speaking to joint climate and labour demands and the idea of a Just Transition, Kirkpatrick says: “Blue Green and a number of allies have been advocating ...the idea of buying clean..You're keeping people employed here at home. You're keeping plants up and running … It's 100 per cent about keeping jobs, reducing the carbon, building out a future together … If everyone is struggling to get by, you are living paycheck to paycheck and if that paycheck disappears, you're in deep trouble. And that's why we talked about the care economy … the importance of good union jobs and all of these things that don't always necessarily seem to be connected, but they very much are … Change is inevitable, but justice is not.” About the speaker: Jamie Kirkpatrick is the senior program manager for Blue Green Canada, an organization founded in 2010 by an alliance of Canadian labour unions, environmental groups, and civil society organizations. We are living at a time where the world needs breakthroughs more than ever. People who want to develop the ability to create a different future have never been more in demand. Though in order to do this, we need models and framework, as well as ideas and inspiration to help create those breakthroughs in our lives and businesses. In this episode of Follow Your Different, Dr. Michael Wade shares with us on how to see the world with fresh eyes and the power of different thinking. He also explains how to navigate such that your breakthroughs can actually come to life, and so much more! Professor Michael Wade's new book, Alien Thinking, blows open much needed research and insight in this regard. ALIEN is actually an acronym that he and his co-authors came up with, and it stands for Attention, Levitation, Imagination, Experimentation, and Navigation. If you want to know the story behind it, stay tuned to this episode. The Definition of a Breakthrough The conversation starts of by establishing their definition of a breakthrough. When talking about a breakthrough, Dr. Mike thinks that it should be something a large improvement, or something that hasn't been done before. It has to be enough to take something to the next level. “It's not just having an idea, which is hard enough. It's about taking that idea and kind of break through the process to become a breakthrough solution.” – Dr. Michael Wade Which is not to say that small changes and incremental innovation is bad. They are great for optimizing those big breakthroughs you have further down the line. It can also help you reach some short-term goals for yourself. Dr. Mike just chooses to focus on studying and looking an eye out for breakthrough innovations. Exponential Breakthroughs are Harder to Reach When asked why people seem to find it easier to go incremental than exponential, Dr. Mike thinks that we are simply not built for it. It takes extra effort to break away from the norm and challenge our usual assumptions about how things are done. If you can't even bring yourself to challenge those assumptions and preconceptions, making a breakthrough will just be a pipe dream. ALIEN Thinking with Dr. Michael Wade Dr. Mike talks about how they try to break down what it means to do something original in an original way. This is because having an exponential or radical innovation often requires being original. Which is why the title of the book, Alien Thinking, fits so well with the idea. Aside from the acronym it stands for, the metaphor of the alien can help you see things in a fresh perspective. “Every day, we go through life without really questioning things after a while. So what we're challenging people to do when they read the book is to see the world like an alien, and see things for the very first time without preconceived notions about the way things should work. So a lot of what we talked about in the book is about is about how to do that how to regain that ability to see things in, in new ways with fresh eyes.” – Dr. Michael Wade To hear more from Dr. Michael Wade and how to see the world through Alien Thinking, download and listen to this episode. It's the little program that grew, the roots of The Transitional Year Programme (TYP) at the University of Toronto began in the Black community through two summer programs in 1969 and 1970, and since then, hundreds of graduates have gone onto successful careers. “It's a place where the students learn to use their voice, develop empathy and unlock their imaginations in order to dream something bigger for themselves,” says TYP Registrar Lauriann Wade, “TYP makes excellence accessible.” TYP is a full-time, eight month access-to-University program and gives those who do not have the formal qualifications – like a high school diploma – intense hands on preparation for entry into post-secondary education. Applicants come from the targeted Indigenous, African-Canadian and LGBTQ communities where finances, family issues or other circumstances beyond their control hindered their schooling. However, the Ontario Progressive Conservative government's recent move to eliminate free tuition for low-income students will make access to higher education difficult once again for applicants to TYP. “The majority of TYP students are from lower income backgrounds with a family income below $50, 000,” explains Lance McCready, Director of TYP. “Having a larger percentage of funding coming from loans will undoubtedly create more debt for our students who have fewer financial resources…it can serve as a deterrent for those from lower income backgrounds trying to access post-secondary education.” In spite of hurdles like this latest one, TYP has a proven track record of success: Rocco Achampong – born in Ghana, Rocco came to Canada in 1988 with his parents and four siblings. He entered TYP in 1999 and went on to study history and political science at U of T's Trinity College. He is now a lawyer who has run for Toronto mayor and city council. Rocco led the legal challenge against Premier Doug Ford's cutting down of the city's wards. Jandell Nicholas – She went from staffing co-ordinator at an employment agency to earning her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts, Geography and Planning. Jandell now works as a teaching assistant in the university's department of Geography and Planning and is a published author. Rahel Woldegiorgis – Once given the opportunity, Rahel embraced education. After finishing TYP, she got her Honours BA from the University of Toronto during which time she did two international exchanges – one at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the other at the University of Nairobi. She completed her Masters of Arts (Social Justice and Community Engagement) at Wilfrid Laurier University and is now the Residential Supervisor at Eva's, a shelter for homeless youth. Recently, Lauriann Wade, TYP Registrar and graduate of TYP, was on our show talking about the TYP. During our conversation, Ms. Wade talked about: – Some of her background and how she got involved in the Transisitonal Year Programme (TYP) including what was preventing her from going to university, how she found out about TYP, the history of the program, her first day in the programme and her graduation day, the programme itself including the application process – Why do some students drop out of the programme – What does her role comprise of – How have students changed over the years – The drop in the number of Black and Indigenous students applying for the programme – How has the programme changed since she was in the programme – How people find out about TYP You can find out more about the University Of Toronto's Transitional Year Program here You can find more about Ms. Wade via: Twitter Instagram Please feel free to email The Dr. Vibe Show™ at dr.vibe@thedrvibeshow.com Please feel free to “Like” the “The Dr. Vibe Show” Facebook fan page here God bless, peace, be well and keep the faith, Dr. Vibe
Cynthia Clark graduated in 1998 with a Honours BA in Sociology from Carleton University. The following year her son Justin, was diagnosed with schizophrenia. The Canadian Mental Health Association reports that schizophrenia typically develops into a full-blown illness in late adolescence or early adulthood. It is a disorder that affects an estimated 1 in 100 Canadians and their families. Children may show symptoms at a much younger age, but are not always diagnosed until later. Distress Line Volunteers may receive calls from individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia or from their family members who are under distress. Understanding the symptoms and challenges of this disorder may assist a well prepared volunteer to better support and manage these calls. In the interview with Cynthia Clark, the Family and Community Coordinator for the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario – Ottawa Region, she describes the challenges of being a parent of a child who has schizophrenia. She explains the day to day struggles of living with the diagnosis, and she makes recommendations for Distress Line volunteers as to how to best respond to their calls. Questions for Further Consideration Do I have any pre-conceived fears or discomfort regarding fielding calls from individuals with Schizophrenia? If yes, what are they? These may be alleviated by further reading on the links provided below. How would my fears or discomfort be reduced? Who can I go to for this support Debriefing with your Volunteer Coordinator or Senior Volunteer may offer support and increase confidence. Where or to whom can I refer these individuals? Are there up to date resources in the Distress Line office? During down times, or coming in a few minutes early before a shift review the Resource Manual. When you hear of any new resources, pass on any new information to the Volunteer Coordinator so that updates can occur. Gil Garratt is the artistic director at the Blyth Festival, which focuses on new play development and work with rural themes. Plays developed at Blyth have been produced around the world, which is impressive especially considering Blyth is a rural town of 1,000 people. In our conversation Garratt shares his progressive thoughts on the Canadian dramaturgical and development process, adding that working on comedies can be the most divisive of all genres. I have witnessed, in the rehearsal of comedy, more relationships destroyed, friendships obliterated over the course of the comedy, than I have working in tragedy. Garratt graduated from the National Theatre School's Playwriting Program and holds an Honours BA from the University of Waterloo, and an MA from the University of Guelph.

In the fall of 2013, Alberta's Finance Minister Doug Horner announced major changes to the pension plans Alberta's frontline workers in health care, education, emergency services, cities, towns, colleges, and universities pay into. The Labour Coalition on Pensions represents 200,000 frontline workers who pay into Alberta's public sector pension plans and approximately 90,000 retirees. The Coalition argues that Horner's proposed changes will slash pension values by more than 25% after 2016 and front-line workers in physically demanding jobs can no longer retire at 60. Are the workplace pensions of the 70s, 80s, and 90s a thing of the past? Will future retirees have any chance at the income security today's retired people currently enjoy? Are public sector pension plans actually unsustainable, as the Alberta government says they are? The speaker will argue that the battle over pensions chips away at income security for Alberta's middle class and presents the possibility of significant inter-generational strife when today's young people are likely to be more retirement-insecure than any generation since the end of WWII.
