Send us a textOn today's PoM podcast I sat down and spoke with Jon Seidl author of “Confessions of a Christian Alcoholic: A Candid Conversation on Drinking, Addiction, and How to Break Free.”In Confessions of a Christian Alcoholic, Jonathon M. Seidl vividly tells his own story of disordered drinking. Not only does he address the roots of addiction, trauma, and the often-overlooked reality that Christians aren't immune to sin struggles, he also reframes the term alcoholic and shares the practical yet spiritual four-step process he used to break free—a process readers will find helpful for working through many of life's struggles. Addiction doesn't always look like rock bottom—and recovery doesn't have to mean all or nothing. In this episode, Lyndsay Soprano sits down with Katie Lain for a powerful conversation about alcohol, family patterns, and the complicated truth about what healing from addiction can actually look like. They dive into the neuroscience of alcohol use and the way it hijacks the brain's reward system, challenging the outdated narrative that addiction is simply a lack of willpower. Katie shares her personal experience and introduces the Sinclair Method, a treatment approach that uses naltrexone to gradually reduce alcohol cravings—without requiring total abstinence from day one.Lyndsay and Katie also talk about the emotional layers of drinking: early exposure, social pressure, generational trauma, and the quiet shame that keeps so many people stuck. This episode is about choice, compassion, and giving yourself permission to explore recovery in a way that feels honest and sustainable.Tune in if you've ever questioned your relationship with alcohol—or if you're ready to let go of the idea that healing only counts if it looks a certain way.Find Katie Lain Online Here:Website: thrivealcoholrecovery.comInstagram: @thrivealcoholrecoveryFacebook: Thrive Alcohol RecoveryLinkedIn: Katie LainYouTube: Thrive Alcohol RecoveryPodcast: Thrive Alcohol RecoveryFind The Pain Game Podcast Online Here:Website: thepaingamepodcast.comInstagram: @thepaingamepodcastFacebook: The Pain Game PodcastLinkedIn: Lyndsay SopranoYouTube: The Pain Game PodcastEpisode Highlights:(00:00) Introduction to Chronic Pain and Alcoholism(02:06) Personal Stories of Alcohol and Family Influence(06:12) Understanding Alcohol Addiction and the Brain(10:16) The Sinclair Method Explained(15:17) The Journey to Recovery and Finding Freedom(20:08) The Challenges of Alcohol Consumption and Social Norms(24:42) Advocacy and Awareness for the Sinclair Method(28:39) Low Dose Naltrexone and Pain Management

Hey team! Today I'm talking with Nick Jonsson, a best-selling author, executive coach, and co-founder of Executives' Global Network. Nick is the author of Executive Loneliness: The 5 Pathways to Overcoming Isolation, Stress, Anxiety & Depression in the Modern Business World. His work focuses on helping leaders tackle isolation, burnout, and addiction while finding healthier, more sustainable ways to succeed. Now I realize that doesn't seem particularly ADHD focused, but I thought that this would be a good interview to take because adults with ADHD have a substantially increased risk of substance use disorders. And so while Nick's work doesn't specifically cover ADHD, there is still a lot that you can glean from it. In our conversation, Nick shares his own journey through loneliness, denial, and alcohol addiction, and how vulnerability and connection became essential tools for his recovery. We dig into practical strategies for opening up in safe spaces, replacing harmful coping mechanisms with meaningful activities, and creating accountability systems that support long-term well-being. We also touch on how social media and other modern habits can quietly feed into loneliness, and what it takes to build resilience against them. If you'd life to follow along on the show notes page you can find that at HackingYourADHD.com/248 YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/y835cnrk Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/HackingYourADHD This Episode's Top Tips Frame recovery as replacement, not deprivation. When looking to break out of unhealthy coping mechanisms, be they alcohol, social media, or some other addiction, deliberately plan what will give you that same connection without the negative costs. Having planned positive alternatives like exercise, hobbies, or group activities can make all the difference in following through with your intentions. Watch out for the “gray zone” of addiction; you don't need to wait until hitting rock bottom to start changing habits. If you are questioning your relationship with alcohol, social media, or other damaging habits, take the time to reflect on what is really driving those habits. Remember, you don't have to make something worse before making it better. When you can, volunteering in support groups or mentoring others not only helps them, but it can also reinforce your own sense of belonging and purpose.
Dr. Gary Mitrevolis, a seasoned expert in addiction medicine, joins us for a critical conversation on cannabis and THC addiction, especially as we face the rising tide of high-potency THC products. With cannabis legalization expanding and THC concentrations soaring to unprecedented levels, Dr. Mitrevolis shares his extensive insights into the mental and physical health risks this trend poses. We discuss why understanding these impacts is vital for effectively addressing the evolving challenges in addiction treatment, particularly in states like California where exposure to high-THC products is more prevalent. Our exploration takes a closer look at the adolescent brain, where we uncover the troubling effects of THC on dopamine production and motivation. Chronic cannabis use during these formative years can lead to devastating consequences, including an alarming drop in IQ and an increased risk of psychosis, especially for those with a family history of mental health disorders. Dr. Mitrevolis highlights that while current data might not differentiate between THC potency levels or consumption methods, ongoing research promises deeper insights that will guide future prevention and treatment strategies. In this episode, you will hear:Exploration of rising THC potency and its implications for addiction and health.Insights from Dr. Gary Mitrevolis on the mental and physical risks of high-THC cannabis.Discussion on cannabis' impact on adolescent brain development, motivation, and IQ.Examination of cannabis legalization and potential reclassification to a Schedule III substance.Debunking myths about the safety of natural substances, highlighting cardiovascular risks.Challenges and strategies for managing cannabis withdrawal and recovery.Follow and Review:We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. In this compelling episode of the Secret Life Podcast, host Brianne Davis-Gantt confronts the often misunderstood concept of enabling in the context of addiction. With her characteristic honesty and humor, Brianne sheds light on how enabling behaviors can mask deeper emotional discomfort and perpetuate the cycle of addiction. She shares her insights from years of personal experience in recovery and her work with others, emphasizing that enabling is not an act of love but a misguided attempt to exert control over a loved one's addiction.Throughout the episode, Brianne outlines the signs of enabling, including making excuses for a loved one's behavior, prioritizing their needs over your own, and feeling anxious when unable to help. She passionately argues that true support for an addict requires setting boundaries and allowing them to face the consequences of their actions. Listeners will learn practical steps to break the cycle of enabling, such as empowering loved ones to take responsibility for themselves, reframing financial support, and prioritizing personal well-being.This episode serves as a crucial reminder that recovery is a personal journey and that sometimes the most loving thing we can do is to step back and allow our loved ones to confront their challenges head-on. Join Brianne as she navigates the complexities of enabling and offers hope for healthier relationships and personal growth.

Alan discusses the significant differences between his intensive, abstinence-based path to recovery in 2002 and the current standards of addiction treatment. Prompted by renewing his DEA license and taking a required CE on opiate prescribing, Alan contrasts his successful, disruptive model (therapy and 12-step programs) with the modern focus on Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), such as buprenorphine (Suboxone), and harm reduction. He grapples with his past skepticism of these newer methods but shares a patient's story and discusses the Sinclair Method (using naltrexone for alcohol recovery) which have opened his mind to various effective ways of getting well. Alan invites listeners to discuss these evolving approaches in the Very Dental Facebook group and the smaller, recovery-focused group, Dentists That Don't. Recover Your Soul: A Spiritual Path to a Happy and Healthy Life
Send one way text to Rev Rachel In this week's episode of the Recover Your Soul Podcast, I'm joined by a true spiritual sister — Ester Nicholson, coach, teacher, and author of Soul Recovery: The 12 Keys to Healing Dependence. From the moment we met, I knew our paths were divinely aligned. We both use the language of Soul Recovery to describe the journey of returning to our authentic selves — the place of peace, power, and divine wholeness that lives within us all.In this heartfelt and deeply inspiring conversation, Ester shares her powerful story of transformation — from addiction and trauma to awakening and spiritual purpose. With honesty and grace, she reminds us that recovery isn't just about overcoming substances or behaviors — it's about healing the deeper wounds that separate us from our soul. Together, we explore how compassion, surrender, and spiritual practice can free us from the illusion of brokenness and guide us back to the light of who we really are.Ester also shares her 21-Day Journey to the Authentic Self — a beautifully designed self-paced program that includes 21 days of teachings, meditations, and somatic healing practices to help you reconnect with your true essence. It's a wonderful complement to the Soul Recovery process and an invitation to step more fully into your wholeness. In this week's episode, Molly dives deeper into the More Sober October theme: Who are you without the drink? If you've ever felt like you're at war with yourself when it comes to drinking decisions, you're not imagining it. Molly unpacks the neuroscience behind this inner conflict and introduces listeners to the concept of our two selves—the automatic self and the intentional self.Referencing Daniel Kahneman's book Thinking, Fast and Slow, Molly breaks down how System 1 (your fast, emotional, habitual brain) and System 2 (your slow, rational, goal-focused brain) influence your drinking choices. This science-backed framework explains why your default drinking habits feel so hard to break and why it's absolutely possible to rewire your brain to make intentional, value-aligned decisions.Whether you're navigating more alcohol-free days this October or simply trying to understand why it's so hard to say no sometimes, this episode offers practical insight and compassionate encouragement.Key Topics CoveredWhy identity and habit formation go hand-in-hand with your drinking storyThe difference between your default (automatic) self and your intentional selfHow Kahneman's System 1 and System 2 thinking applies to alcohol habitsWhy the brain resists effortful thinking and defaults to the familiarHow to start training your intentional self to become your new defaultResources MentionedBook: Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel KahnemanJoin More Sober October with Molly: More Sober October InfoLow risk drinking guidelines from the NIAAA:Healthy men under 65:No more than 4 drinks in one day and no more than 14 drinks per week.Healthy women (all ages) and healthy men 65 and older:No more than 3 drinks in one day and no more than 7 drinks per week. One drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. So remember that a mixed drink or full glass of wine are probably more than one drink.Abstinence from alcoholAbstinence from alcohol is the best choice for people who take medication(s) that interact with alcohol, have health conditions that could be exacerbated by alcohol (e.g. liver disease), are pregnant or may become pregnant or have had a problem with alcohol or another substance in the past.Benefits of “low-risk” drinkingFollowing these guidelines reduces the risk of health problems such as cancer, liver disease, reduced immunity, ulcers, sleep problems, complications of existing conditions, and more. It also reduces the risk of depression, social problems, and difficulties at school or work. ★ Support this podcast ★

Whether you're struggling with your own battles or praying for a prodigal child, Jesse's testimony is a reminder that no one is too far gone for God's grace. This episode serves as both an informative guide to embrace a healthier, more balanced lifestyle, encouraging listeners to embark on their journeys with renewed vigor and compassion.Reach out to KB on Instagram and share your thoughts.
On this episode of Preaching the Text, John Hoyum and Steve Paulson discuss Luke's account of Christ's healing of the ten lepers. Jesus directs the ten to go and show themselves to the priests in accord with the prescriptions of the law. But only one, a Samaritan, returns to give thanks to God. It is through this one that we see the working of healing outside the law and in the word of the gospel and faith which claims this message. “This really is the full motivation for my having written the memoir. I want people to know what the process is like; not only what the process is like but what the feelings are that don't really make you think of psychoanalysis as a way of changing your life. We're just living and hoping that things will change without really taking account of the fact that we could be living better lives and in a better way. I began to think of the ways of the world and the wickedness in it. There's so many things that we do to keep us going - me and my aphrodisiacs, and I think other people doing other things just to divert them from the misery and unhappiness that they feel. I don't know how often that's looked at or discussed, so I hope the book does open that up a little bit.” Episode Description: We begin with Beverly's description of her early years of feeling lost and the consequent self-destructive patterns she replayed. Years of sensation-seeking led her to become "exhausted, limp, tarnished, and each time, more profoundly lost." She "landed on an analyst's couch in Little Venice, a section of London. I was paying for someone to recognize me. She did." Beverly shares her analytic journey with us and how vital her discovery of 'kindness' was, first from the outside and then from within. We discuss the early death of her father, her mother's depression and the devotion of her older brother. She closes with "Like life, psychoanalysis is a continuing process. It doesn't stop...issues crop up, new feelings arise...we better understand what those feelings are telling us, and how to make use of them in an environment we have been able to choose for ourselves. And so it goes…" Our Guest: Beverly Kolsky, MSW has worked as a psychotherapist for more than forty years both in America and in England. She trained as a psychoanalyst with the New York Institute for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology also and received training in London where she worked under the auspices of the Tavistock Clinic and the Institute of Marital Studies. Her work has been published in two journals: Mind Consiliums and Voices: Art and Science of Psychotherapy. She had two psychoanalytic experiences in two countries with analysts of two different orientations. Her motivation for writing the book as a memoir was to let others in the community know the transformative and enduring power of psychoanalysis. She was in private practice in Englewood, N.J. and now lives, mostly retired, in the northern Adirondacks. Recommended Readings: Jung, C.G. 1963. Memories, Dreams, Reflections. Master of Puppets. In this episode, we continue our exploration of the Bondage of the Will, with Gerhard Forde's book, The Captivation of the Will. We discuss the human will — what it is, what it does, what it wants — and why we are compelled to insist that we have free choice. We also talk about the two paths: one, the path of forgiveness, and the other, the way of morality. Why do we default to morality in matters of choice, and why is the preaching of God's grace over against morality so offensive to Christians who confess that our knowledge of good and bad is a direct consequence of the original sin in the garden? We also talk about drunkenness, women's ordination, the offense of irresistible grace, and what the Holy Spirit is up to amidst the disruption that occurs when he sends his preachers to declare an end to the illusion of free choice and reveal his death sentence to bound wills. Matt D spent the better part of a decade in an obsession that took him to some very dark places. Fueled by alcohol and drugs, he determined to find evidence of his wife's infidelity, driving himself insane in the process.Through the principles he learned in S-Anon, specifically with the help of a growing and thriving group of men in the program, he learned that although his wife's disease was a problem, it wasn't HIS problem--that his serenity was contingent upon the remission of his own chronic disease. He worked the steps aggressively, and within three months, he was surprised to discovere he was living the life that he'd always prayed God would give him. Now, four years into the program, he can say, without reservation, that his wife's sexaholism is the best thing that has happened to him.Reco12 is an open-to-all addictions and afflictions organization, dedicated to exploring the common threads of the differing manifestations of alcoholism; sharing tools, and offering hope from those walking a similar path. What if the ways we keep getting stuck in relationships aren't just bad habits, but the natural outworking of how we're wired to bond—and to protect ourselves from pain? In this episode of Typology, I sit down with psychologist and couples counselor Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby (a freshly discovered Seven with an Eight wing) to talk about the intersection of attachment, addiction to love, and the Enneagram. We explore why love itself can feel addictive, how that longing for connection sometimes binds us to the wrong person or pattern, and why recovery communities often work—they help us reattach to what's good, true, and life-giving. Along the way we dig into common Enneagram pairings, the myth of perfect compatibility, and the real gift of learning to honor differences, see blind spots, and practice repair. If you've ever wondered why you tend to chase, withdraw, fix, or move on too quickly—and how to love with more courage and steadiness—you'll find this conversation both practical and deeply hopeful. ABOUT DR. LISA MARIE BOBBY Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby is a licensed marriage and family therapist, psychologist, board certified coach and author of Exaholics: Breaking Your Addiction to an Ex Love. She is the founder of Growing Self Counseling and Coaching, an internationally recognized practice focused on love, happiness, and success. We uncover why waist size is the ultimate death predictor, how visceral fat destroys men's hormones, why SSRIs don't cure depression, the promising science of psilocybin, and the dangerous side effects of hormonal birth control that no one talks about. No fluff. No sugarcoating. Just the truth you need if you want to take back control of your body, your health, and your future.
