NB: The music in this broadcast has been removed from the podcast for rights reasons. We've just had the shortest day of the year, and the most amount of darkness. But how do women live their lives in the dark today? You might have to work at night, or find it the best time to be productive. Or you might harness darkness as a time to think and meditate. Anita Rani speaks to two people who have considered the pros and cons of darkness in very different ways. Lucy Edwards is a Blind Broadcaster, Journalist, Author, Content Creator and Disability Activist and Arifa Akbar is theatre critic for the Guardian whose investigations into the dark formed her book, Wolf Moon, which came out this summer. Earlier this month we asked you for your night time experiences and were contacted by listener Catherine Smeeth who is a 55-year-old newly qualified class 1 HGV driver which is the heaviest you can get at 44 tons. She does a 300 mile round trip in an articulated lorry with a double decker trailer. Catherine got her licence 3 months ago and says the night roads are "great for a newbie getting to grips with the road". She works 12 hour shifts overnight, and recorded one of them for us. Dame Maggie Aderin Pocock is a legend when it comes to the night sky. She is a space scientist and educator, having presented the Sky at Night and she is presenting this year's Royal Institution Christmas Lectures. She has written books for adults and children, presented TV film 'Do we really need the Moon?', received a Damehood in 2024 for services to science education and diversity and in 2023 had a Barbie doll made in her name. So who better to ask about how the night sky can inspire and comfort us? We've heard about darkness and fear and overcoming that and how the lights in the sky can be both awe inspiring and comforting. But what about the past? What kind of relationship have women had with the dark over time? To help answer that, Anita is joined by archaeologist Dr Marion Dowd and Professor Jane Hamlett.Moving on from the past to modern day celebrations at night. And where better than with nightclubs and music. Anita is joined by Woman's Hour's resident Boxing Day DJ Jamz Supernova who suggests some tracks for getting the party started and keeping it going. Space Geek Out Time - 2025 Edition! Richard talks to Carl about the past year in space, starting with a reader comment about 3I/ATLAS, the interstellar comet passing through our solar system that has kicked off conspiracies about aliens coming to visit - hint, it's just a comet. Then, into another record-breaking year of spaceflight with a record number of Falcon 9 flights, Starship tests, United Launch Alliance underperforming, and New Glenn finally getting to orbit! The International Space Station has passed 25 years of continuous habitation and is only five years away from being sent to a watery grave. But there are new space stations in the works! Finally, the stories of landers on the Moon, trouble at Mars, and how silly the idea of building data centers in space really is. A fantastic year for space!
A look at the evening sky is a nice way to wrap up your Christmas. It features the Moon, two bright planets, and some of the brighter stars in all the night sky. As twilight drains from the sky, the Moon is well up in the southwest. The Sun lights up more than a quarter of the lunar hemisphere that faces our way, so it’s a fat crescent. It’s waxing toward first quarter, on Saturday. The planet Saturn is to the upper left of the Moon, and looks like a bright star. It shines so brightly for a couple of reasons: It’s the second-largest planet in the solar system – more than nine times the diameter of Earth – and it’s topped by clouds that reflect much of the sunlight that strikes them. The only planet that’s bigger than Saturn is Jupiter, and it climbs into good view, in the east-northeast, by 7 or 7:30. In all the night sky right now, only the Moon outshines it. The “twin” stars of Gemini – Pollux and Castor – stand to Jupiter’s left and upper left. At the same time, the brilliant constellation Orion is off to the upper right of Jupiter. Look for its three-star belt aiming straight up from the horizon, flanked by orange Betelgeuse and blue-white Rigel. Taurus perches well above Orion. It’s marked by its bright orange eye, Aldebaran. And the Dog Star, Sirius, climbs into good view by 8 or 8:30, below Orion’s Belt. It’s the brightest true star in the night sky – a beautiful decoration for Christmas night. It feels like there shouldn't be anything left to say about The Dark Side of the Moon. It's one of the best-selling albums of all time, and it's consistently rated as one of the greatest albums of all time by critics. If you tune into a classic rock station for more than a couple of hours, chances are better than 50/50 that you'll hear a track or three from it get played. It's so common to hear tracks from here out of context that it's become easy to forget that these tracks, when heard in order from start to finish, constitute one of the most stunningly coherent artistic statements of the album era, and that makes it an album that Discord & Rhyme had to cover in depth at some point. Join Amanda, Mike, Rich, and John as they discuss the 1973 classic that transformed Pink Floyd from a niche-famous British prog-adjacent band into one of the most famous bands in the world. If you’d like to know how dark your night sky is, then look high in the northeast after the Moon sets this evening for the stars of Camelopardalis, the giraffe. If you can see any of them, then congratulations – your sky is pretty dark. Light pollution wipes out the view for most Americans. The glare of street lights, billboards, and other artificial sources overpowers the stars. None of the stars of Camelopardalis, for example, is brighter than fourth magnitude, which is pretty faint. So unless you’re under dark skies, there’s not much to see. That’s a little misleading, though. The giraffe’s brightest stars are all stunners. They look so faint only because they’re so far away. The giraffe’s brightest star is Beta Camelopardalis – Beta Cam for short. It’s a huge, massive star that shines roughly 1600 times brighter than the Sun. But it’s about 840 light-years away, so it’s a faint dot in the night sky. The next-brightest star is CS Cam. It is a supergiant star that’s perhaps 75,000 times the Sun’s brightness. But it’s 3400 light-years away. And the third-brightest, Alpha Cam, is the most impressive of all: more than 600,000 times the Sun’s brightness. At a distance of 5500 light-years, it’s one of the most remote stars visible to the unaided eye – but only under especially dark skies. More about Alpha Cam tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield
“Then the Lord sent this message through the prophet Haggai: ‘Why are you living in luxurious houses while my house lies in ruins? This is what the Lord of Heaven's Armies says: Look at what's happening to you! You have planted much but harvest little. You eat but are not satisfied. You drink but are still thirsty. You put on clothes but cannot keep warm. Your wages disappear as though you were putting them in pockets filled with holes.'” - Haggai 1:3-6The book of Haggai is a bit of a jump back to the books of Ezra and Nehemiah and refocuses in on the temple. At its heart, this is a book about priorities. As the passage I just read says, “Why are you living in luxurious houses while my house lies in ruins?” God is using the prophet Haggai to call out hypocrisy, to call out wayward hearts but lo and behold, what happens? The people listen and we get to see God's response to their obedience. Haggai is not the longest book by any means, but there's a lot in it to unpack. To help us navigate the book of Haggai is Dr. Brian German, Associate Professor of Theology and Director of Concordia Bible Institute, and author of a commentary on Haggai. Update: If you listened to last week's podcast, you know that today's episode about the historic Apollo 8 mission to the moon in late December 1968 was one of my most popular of 2024. The lessons from that mission, which I discussed in episode 344, are just as important, if not more so, today in episode 394. An artist's rendering of Apollo 8 as it photographs "Earthrise." Summary In this episode, I reflect on the Apollo 8 mission to the moon in late December 1968 and the turbulent year that preceded it. The episode highlights enduring lessons on inequality, collective problem-solving, and environmental stewardship. It urges renewed respect for history and a commitment to addressing modern challenges with the same ingenuity that defined the space race. Three Takeaways Historical Literacy: The mission symbolizes humanity's capacity for courage, teamwork, and ingenuity, offering hope and a sense of shared accomplishment amidst turmoil. Historical Inequality: The unresolved issues of racial, gender, and economic inequities persist, echoing the divisions of 1968. Environmental Responsibility: "Earthrise" underscores the planet's fragility, emphasizing the need for collective stewardship over self-interest. Social Media Rocket Men by Robert Kurson

Hotel Mars with John Batchelor for Thursday, Dec. 18, 2025 featuring from India, Dr. Sabayashi Pal.John Batchelor and I introduced The Hotel Mars audience to DR. SABAYASHI PAL regarding his discovery of giant radio galaxies and supermassive black holes. Dr. Pal reported that astronomers have discovered 53 giant radio galaxies, some 75 times larger than the Milky Way, powered by active supermassive black holes emitting radio jets. These ancient objects offer insights into galactic evolution, contrasting sharply with the Milky Way's smaller, dormant black hole in the center of our galaxy that allows life to exist safely. In Part Two of our Hotel Mars discussion with Dr. Pal, he said that with an unlimited budget, he would use it for investing in human intelligence over that of any AI. Dr. Pal prefers to prioritize human resource development over new telescopes, proposing a space study institute in Africa to train experts. He said that while AI is a useful tool, a quality science education is essential for humans to interpret data and appreciate the machinery rather than being replaced by it. Dr. Pal strongly believes that human intelligence is a far more valuable resource than artificial intelligence, even for the future.Special thanks to our sponsors:Northrup Grumman, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Helix Space in Luxembourg, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights, Astrox Corporation, Dr. Haym Benaroya of Rutgers University, The Space Settlement Progress Blog by John Jossy, The Atlantis Project, and Artless EntertainmentOur Toll Free Line for Live Broadcasts: 1-866-687-7223 (Not in service at this time)For real time program participation, email Dr. Space at: drspace@thespaceshow.com for instructions and access. The Space Show is a non-profit 501C3 through its parent, One Giant Leap Foundation, Inc. Venus and Earth are similar in size, composition, density, and mass. Unfortunately, our sister planet Venus is an example of a place where green house gases have created an extreme situation. Venus's thick carbon dioxide atmosphere has a surface pressure 90 times that of Earth. It would crush a submarine. Additionally, the thick atmospheric blanket holds in the heat causing Venus's surface temperature to be 864 F, hot enough to melt lead.

This week: Happy Holidays!... and quieter skies, as the universe offers a bit of a holiday reprieve. Venus and Neptune challenge beliefs about relationships and our values. Venus puts on her investor hat as she goes to work in Capricorn. There is a sizzling First Quarter Moon in Aries, and a listener question about how AI may impact the field of astrology. Plus: Working things out, a new tradition, and the case for consulting humans. Note: We're taking a little holiday break, so there will be NO PODCAST ON DEC. 29. But we'll be back on January 5 to help you ring in the New Year! Read a full transcript of this episode. Have a question you'd like answered on the show? Email April or leave it here! Subscribe to April's mailing list and get a free lunar workbook at each New Moon! Love the show? Make a donation! Timestamps [1:44] Venus squares Neptune (Dec. 23, 9:31 pm PST) at 29°25' Sagittarius-Pisces. When there's a square aspect between Venus and Neptune, we can achieve clarity about relationships, finances, or values, and let go of the things and people that drain us. [4:45] Venus enters the sign of Capricorn (Dec. 24, 8:26 am PST), and it'll be in this sign until Jan. 17, 2026. This is a practical Venus that wants relationships that are stable and solid, based on shared values, shared goals. [8:14] Moon Report! The Aries First Quarter Moon (Dec. 27, 11:10 am PST) is at 6°17' Aries-Capricorn. This is the first action point in the New Moon cycle that began at the Dec. 19 New Moon in Sagittarius. Consider things before dashing off to get something done. [11:36] This is the First Quarter (first action point) in a lunar phase family cycle (LPFC) that began with the New Moon solar eclipse of Mar. 29, 2025, at 9°00' Aries. The Full Moon (awareness point) in this LPFC comes on Sept. 26, 2026, at 3°37' Aries. The Last Quarter (final action point) in this LPFC is on June 26, 2027, at 5°21' Aries. [13:21] Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon periods. The Moon in Capricorn sextiles Neptune in Pisces (Dec. 22, 6:44 am PST). It's VOC for 1 hour, 8 minutes, then enters Aquarius (7:52 am PST). Use this VOC Moon period to get in the habit of going with the flow, instead of insisting that your way is the best and the only way. This VOC could also help your spiritual practice. [14:57] The Moon in Aquarius squares Uranus in Taurus (Dec. 24, 1:42 pm PST). It's VOC for 3 hours, 27 minutes, then enters Pisces (5:09 pm). There might be an unexpected desire to introduce a new holiday tradition. Use this VOC period to get in the habit of letting down your guard when it comes to traditions and welcome something fresh and new, maybe even something a little bit innovative. [16:36] The Moon conjuncts Neptune in Pisces (Dec. 26, 11:03 pm PST). It's VOC for 59 minutes and then enters Aries (Dec. 27, 12:02 am PST). Take a lovely bath, listen to music, or even watch a sentimental movie. Use this VOC Moon period to get in the habit of some healthy escapism. [18:03] Listener Elizabeth asks about how AI may impact the field of astrology. [24:38] To have a question answered on a future episode, leave a message of one minute or less at speakpipe.com/bigskyastrologypodcast or email april (at) bigskyastrology (dot) com; put “Podcast Question” in the subject line. Space agencies are talking a lot these days about sending people to the Moon – and even setting up permanent bases there. But you might not want to be on the Moon seven years from today. A space rock that’s half the size of an NBA arena has a slight chance of slamming into the Moon. Asteroid 2024 YR4 was discovered last year, two days after Christmas, when the asteroid had flown just half a million miles from Earth. Early observations gave it more than a three percent chance of hitting Earth on December 22nd, 2032. As astronomers tracked it longer, they ruled out that chance. Instead, they calculated that it’ll pass about 7,000 miles from the Moon. But there’s a 45-thousand-mile margin of error. So there’s a better than four percent chance that it will hit the Moon. 2024 YR4 is so far away right now that we can’t see it. It won’t return to view until 2028. Once it reappears, astronomers will refine their calculations. That probably will rule out the chance of an impact. But for now, we can’t know for sure. The asteroid is about 200 feet in diameter. That’s about the size of the asteroid that gouged the famous meteor crater in Arizona. So an impact on the Moon probably would form a big crater. Debris from the impact could travel hundreds of miles – cosmic missiles crashing across much of the Moon. Script by Damond Benningfield

SpaceTime with Stuart Gary Gary - Series 28 Episode 150In this episode of SpaceTime, we delve into intriguing discoveries and ongoing challenges in the realm of astrophysics and planetary science.Cosmic Dance of Dying StarsAstronomers have made fascinating observations of a unique star system named Apep, located over 8,000 light years away in the constellation Norma. This rare system consists of three massive stars locked in a 190-year orbit, creating stunning spirals of cosmic dust. Using the advanced capabilities of NASA's Webb Space Telescope and the Very Large Telescope in Chile, researchers captured extraordinary images revealing four distinct dust shells spiraling outward from the stars. Lead author Ryan White from Macquarie University discusses how these findings enhance our understanding of stellar interactions and the evolution of massive stars over time.Titan's Liquid Ocean: A New PerspectiveA recent study challenges the long-held belief that Saturn's largest moon, Titan, harbors a vast underground ocean. Instead, researchers suggest that Titan may have a more complex internal structure characterized by slushy tunnels and pockets of meltwater rather than a global liquid water ocean. This revelation, based on a reanalysis of data from NASA's Cassini mission, could have significant implications for the search for potential life on Titan, indicating that any existing life forms might inhabit a more confined environment with concentrated nutrients.NASA's MAVEN: Communication ChallengesMission managers at NASA are working diligently to restore contact with the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft, which went silent during a routine pass behind Mars on December 6. Engineers are analyzing data from before the loss of signal to identify the cause and determine if the spacecraft can be salvaged. MAVEN has been crucial for studying Mars' atmosphere and has served as a vital communications relay for surface missions.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesAstrophysical JournalNatureNASA TVBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-your-guide-to-space-astronomy--2458531/support.(00:00:00) This is space time series 28 episode 150 for broadcast on 22nd December 2025(00:00:47) NASA's Webb Space Telescope reveals four spectacular dust shells from distant star system(00:10:58) New study says Titan probably doesn't have a vast underground liquid water ocean(00:15:57) NASA mission managers continue efforts to restore contact with missing maven spacecraft(00:18:36) New study finds shared genetic patterns across 14 common psychiatric disorders(00:20:56) A new study claims acupuncture treatment for lower back pain reduces pain

The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry
A viral “Top 26 Songs of 2025” list is only the start—we put every pick under the microscope to see what truly earns replay value. From Bailey Zimmerman and Luke Combs to Morgan Wallen's double presence and Laney Wilson's anchor tracks, we dig into the hooks, arrangements, and performances that separate a fleeting hit from a keeper. Expect honest takes, a few friendly disagreements, and a closer look at the production moves—floor tom hits, 70s textures, harmony blends—that make a chorus land. The conversation widens as we ask what makes album art timeless. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon becomes a benchmark for clarity and concept, while modern country sleeves split between glossy trends and striking, cinematic restraint. We swap community favorites—Genesis, Journey, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, King Crimson—and talk recognizability, narrative, and how a cover can hint at sound before the first note plays. You'll hear why certain designs elevate the music's myth, and where visual nostalgia actually works.News brings heart and history: Willie Nelson and Lukas Nelson competing for Best Traditional Country Album is a rare, moving moment of legacy in real time. Riley Green's back-to-back solo-written No. 1s reset the conversation on authorship, Ella Langley's UK airplay run shows country's global reach, and Laney Wilson stepping into ESPN's Monday Night Football booth underlines how presence travels across mediums.Episode LinksScotty Simpson: https://jayfranze.com/episode3/Andy Hull: https://jayfranze.com/episode7/Jim Cristaldi: https://jayfranze.com/episode27/Bob Bullock: https://jayfranze.com/episode28/Dave Jackson: https://jayfranze.com/episode53/William Lee Golden: https://jayfranze.com/episode72/Billie Jo Jones: https://jayfranze.com/episode98/Dalila Mya: https://jayfranze.com/episode102/Mark Badolato: https://jayfranze.com/episode140Send us a text Support the showLinks Jay Franze: https://jayfranze.com/ JFS Country Countdown: https://jayfranze.com/countdown/ Contact Contact: https://jayfranze.com/contact/ Socials Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jayfranze TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jayfranze X: https://x.com/jayfranze YouTube: https://youtube.com/@jayfranze Services Services: https://jayfranze.com/services/ Books Books: https://jayfranze.com/books/ Merchandise Merchandise: https://jayfranze.com/merchandise/ Support Support: https://jayfranze.com/support/ Sponsor the Show: https://jayfranze.com/sponsor/

*(Note Part One of this episode)New Moon Lunar Cycle Themes: Expansion, Exploration, New Perspective through Wisdom, Spiritual Renewal. The conjunction of the Sun and Moon, “Dark Moon” part of the lunar cycle is powerful and focused as a portal toward immense changes on both a personal and collective level in 2026 This lunar cycle is especially impactful and meaningful because it is coupled with the winter Solstice in the Northern hemisphere, and the summer Solstice in the Southern hemisphere. The solstice energy is a messenger of truth, clarity and inner wisdom. It places tremendous emphasis on relinquishing the past, while trusting in the possibilities of the future which are yet unseen and unknown. This Moon offers both inner focus, and the opportunity to experience worldly experiences through connection to Cosmic Source. Guidance through trusting intuitive insights, from the well of personal inspiration, is the key for moving toward greater and higher vibrational consciousness.During this lunar cycle, the awareness of growth, expansion, plenty, and abundance are under major consideration. Even as we look out and observe the erroneous beliefs and falsehoods into the collective society, it's absolutely critical to dream one's own big dreams. The sign of Sagittarius is about believing in your own inner awareness and wisdom that connects with authentic understanding which supports dignity, respect, freedom and sovereignty for every person. This New Moon and Solstice connections are placing emphasis on listening to yourself. It is time to forge a personal path that does not rely on asking someone else what you “should” or need to do. The New Moon offers opportunity to gather awareness of new intentions, while the solstice's "return to light" energy is a gateway for deeper self-realization. Four Key Questions for 2026 DirectionWhat is your "Philosophy of Life"?How will you embrace your values and inspiration through intuitive awareness? How will you seek new meaning for yourself, as you envision experiences and possibilities that await you in the coming months? Are you willing to be the "Truth-teller", to be honest and open to the "Wisdom within yourself"?*Please enjoy Part Two of this episode: "Sound Alchemy" with Kathy H.
